GREAT THINGS ARE BUILT ONE DAY AT A TIME. No matter what you plan for your future, you’re going to have to tackle things one day at a time. A day in the classroom. A day in the lab. A day in the field. Our students know this, so they make each day count — and they keep making them count long after graduation.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF RAT RACE Psychology majors have access to Southern West Virginia’s only full animal behavior laboratory and live rodent colony, where they can make detailed observations on animal behavior and learn behavior modification principles.
JACQUE CARROLL, ’16 Jacque Carroll is a graduate of the WVU Tech psychology program, an accomplished volleyball player and a self-described “people watcher” with a fascination for figuring out what makes people tick. This year, she’s pursuing her master’s degree in forensic psychology. She hopes to one day put her training to work at the FBI.
“I want to take my love of solving puzzles and make it applicable to helping people in live scenarios — to help people focus on getting through knowing it’s going to get better.”

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES Students take part in all kinds of fascinating internships and co-ops to learn new skills and boost their resumes, including work with organizations like Dow Chemical and Toyota.
TAVON JOHNSON, ’16 In his time at Tech, Tavon earned a degree in mechanical engineering, launched a popular student design exposition and worked as an intern at a cybersecurity firm. Now, he’s using that experience in Pittsburgh as a field engineer working on power plant and water treatment projects.
“Don’t enroll in any degree program because you think it will be easy or because you’ll make money. Do it because it’s something you love. Make sure it’s something you’re passionate about. If this field is what you want and you’re willing to fight for it, it’s completely worth it.”
RESEARCH IS FOR UNDERGRADS, TOO Our small school environment means that students can enter into research opportunities typically reserved for graduate students. We’re working on projects like massive superconductor tracks and upgrading bio-diesel to make cleaner fuel. What’s next? That’s up to you.

LINDSAY DAVIS, ’15
Born in Poland and raised in Germany, Joanna followed her fascination with bridges to WVU Tech’s civil engineering program. Now, she’s a project manager and estimator for a construction firm in West Virginia where she gets to work on bridge projects throughout the state.
Lindsay landed a once-in-a-lifetime internship at NASA and used what she learned to help research new ways to make fuel from biomass. These days, she’s earning her master’s degree in engineering management. She’s also employed in Georgia as a corrosion engineer, working on special projects for the United States Air Force.
“To me the complexity of a bridge is fascinating and impressive. I love the idea that bridges connect people and open doors for human relationships that at one point in history did not exist. I feel lucky that I was able to make my career in bridge construction so that I can be a part of that.”
“My education at Tech helped to prepare me for this position because, due to the small class sizes, I had more opportunities to lead certain projects within my class. That skill is helping me to take on projects that would normally be considered very much above my experience level.” /

JUST LIKE THE REAL THING Our nursing students practice their skills in a true hospital environment using state-of-the art medical equipment.

Mary can’t help but care for others, and she’s using the nursing education she received at WVU Tech to do just that. Mary is working in a cardiac catheterization lab in the state’s largest hospital center, where she prepares patients for heart procedures and provides emotional support to patients and their families.
“Being compassionate and caring is just as important as the physical care that a nurse provides. A passion of mine is caring for someone as a human being and hopefully making an impact that counts.”

RAÚL TORRES, ’15 Raúl came to WVU Tech from Puerto Rico to play baseball and earn his degree in mechanical engineering. His path has taken him to North Carolina, where he works as an associate field service engineer. He spends his days working on control systems or troubleshooting hardware at a power plant.
“Engineering improves quality of life. Whether by advancements in transportation, power generation, food conservation, manufacturing — you name it — mechanical engineering will always be involved.”
SHOW YOUR WORK Our students aren’t just taking opportunities, they’re sharing them. They attend conferences to present papers and share their work at student-run expositions. They even showcase their research at Undergraduate Research Day at the state capitol, where they discuss their work with state lawmakers.
LARRY ALLPHIN, ’16 Information systems graduate Larry came to WVU Tech with a passion for computers and helping others. He spent his years here in studentrun organizations that did both. Now, Larry’s putting his knack for problem solving to work at IBM as an application development specialist.

E-SPORTS CLUB
AWESOME
Founded in the spring of 2015, the WVU Tech e-sports club is one of the most popular groups on campus. The club is designed to balance academics with competitive gaming, and the group has hosted on-campus gaming events and competed in a national gaming tournament.
The Association for Women Engineers, Scientists, Or Mathematicians Empowerment (AWESOME) is dedicated to supporting women in STEM fields. The group hears from industry professionals and works with K-12 students on outreach activities to introduce young minds to STEM.
AWESOME gives female STEM students a chance to grow their network and learn from industry leaders. 10

ASCE Students in WVU Tech’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers are known for building and racing concrete canoes, constructing steel bridges and showcasing their research in technical papers. They’re a clever group of engineers, and they show it each year in regional competitions.
SAE Each year, members of the WVU Tech Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) build a Baja-style racing buggy from the ground up. These machines are designed, constructed and raced entirely by students. The experience gives students a chance to put their classrroom learning to work in a real-world, highstakes environment.

Our modern residence halls, popular dining facilities and campus activities mean students never run short on things to do or places to be. And with free student support programs, our students can brush up on everything from the theory of relativity to the theory of resume writing.
CAMPUS LIFE Our students enjoy an active and entertaining campus environment. We book regular musical, theatre and comedy performances. We show movies right out of the theaters and plan outdoor skiing and whitewater rafting trips. And for those who live on campus full-time, our modern residence halls offer a total resident living experience with cable, wi-fi and free laundry facilities.
SUCCESS CENTER The Student Success Center was established to help every student on their path to a degree. It’s a hub of learning and sees more than 10,000 visits each academic year. Why? Because we offer academic advising to first-year students, free tutoring and skill-building workshops for all students and a place for those who want to study or work together on projects.

We host one of TRIO’s oldest federally funded Student Support Services programs in the country.
