MESSAGE FROM OLIVER LUCK The 2010-11 athletic season brought much success to West Virginia University in the classroom and in competition. On behalf of the entire Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, I am pleased to present you this Annual Report, which highlights the outstanding accomplishments by our teams, studentathletes and coaches.

Throughout the year, we congratulated and honored 10 first team individual All-Americans and 29 student-athletes overall who earned All-American recognition. Our student-athletes captured 16 individual conference championship titles, and we totaled 38 all-conference performers in the four leagues in which our teams compete.

As you will see in the following pages, there were numerous accomplishments by our teams and student-athletes. Two that come to mind are women’s soccer winning the BIG EAST tournament championship and Nicco Campriani’s national championship in the NCAA air rifle event, helping our rifle team to a second-place national finish.

Academically, we honored more than 400 student-athletes on the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Our year consisted of seven Academic All-Americans, 36 academic award winners and three teams - cross country, men’s soccer and women’s soccer - which earned academic team honors. Men’s basketball had the highest GPA in the BIG EAST, and football placed 18 performers on the BIG EAST Academic All-Star list. Overall, WVU had 158 student-athletes on the BIG EAST Academic All-Star list.

Further accomplishments showing our success in competition and in the classroom was our 40th-place finish in the Director’s Cup, our fourth straight Top 50 finish, and our six student-athletes who earned major national awards along with 27 NCAA postseason individual performers. WVU had five teams recognized by the NCAA for top APR scores, and our department’s overall APR score was the highest ever.

In finishing my first year as your director of athletics, I am proud of our accomplishments, and we will continue to grow and excel in all areas. We had a record-setting year in terms of fundraising and that is a tribute to the many Mountaineer Athletic Club donors who want their Mountaineers to do well. The generosity of our supporters has allowed the athletic department to move forward and complete much needed capital projects as well as maintain a competitive operating budget. And with our student-athletes excelling in the classroom and in competition, the private gifts raised help us fund athletic scholarships that not only benefit us now, but also in shaping the lives of our future leaders.

I want to thank you for your continued support of the WVU Intercollegiate Athletic program. We are extremely grateful of your efforts and will continue to work hard to make all Mountaineer fans proud of our department.

OUR MISSION

The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics fully subscribes to and will conscientiously abide by the rules, regulations and statutes of those organizations and agencies having jurisdiction over the conduct of its athletics program. Specifically, the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will adhere to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Principles of Conduct of Intercollegiate Athletics set forth in the NCAA Constitution and all regulations thereto in its then applicable bylaws.

The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics:

RED BROWN CUP Nicco Campriani and Liz Repella named WVU’s top student-athletes Women’s basketball guard Liz Repella and air rifle national champion Nicco Campriani, both seniors, are the recipients of the 2011 Red Brown Cup, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding all-around studentathletes.

A two-time team captain, Repella, a Steubenville, Ohio, native, earns the Red Brown Cup for the second straight season. A two-time all-BIG EAST first team honoree, Repella led the squad in 12 statistical categories last year and was a 2010-11 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award finalist, earned a spot on the award’s All-America second team and was named to the WBCA/State Farm Coaches’ honorable mention All-America Team.

A major contributor in each of her four seasons, she played in 134 career games, the most of any Mountaineer in program history, logged 3,917 minutes played, good enough for the No. 4 ranking in the program’s record book, and was a part of 96 WVU victories. Repella scored 1,641 career points, the seventh-best point total in Mountaineer history, and her 215 3-point field goals made ranks as the fifth most in the school annals. In total, she led WVU in scoring 44 times in her career, set the pace in rebounding 34 times, recorded 18 double-doubles and tallied 87 double-figure scoring games.

Academically, Repella maintained a 3.96 GPA and graduated with a degree in exercise physiology. A twotime Capital One/CoSIDA first team Academic All-American, an award given to five student-

athletes nationally each year, she earned a 4.0 in four semesters, garnering WVU President’s List honors. Repella, a five-time Dean’s List and Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll honoree, earned the 2009 and 2011 BIG EAST Scholar Athlete Sports Excellence Award for women’s basketball and is a three-time academic all-district II first team honoree.

Though only with the Mountaineers for two seasons, Campriani, a Florence, Italy, native, made a lasting impact on the rifle program, as WVU went 22-2, garnered two Top 3 finishes at the NCAA Championships and earned back-toback Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships during his career. He won the individual air rifle competition, becoming the Mountaineers’ 17th national champion and first since 1997. Campriani also finished second in smallbore and helped the Mountaineers to a second-place team finish. He also repeated as the individual GARC air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion this past season. Campriani was named a National Rifle Association smallbore and air rifle first team All-American, his second consecutive honors in both guns, and also was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year.

Campriani owns the WVU smallbore, air rifle and aggregate school records. He shot the perfect air rifle score twice this past season, and though the score matches a world record, he did not earn credit for the tie as he did not shoot it at an international competition. Campriani was only the second NCAA shooter to shoot a perfect air rifle score.

In the classroom, Campriani maintained a 3.87 GPA in industrial engineering and was the team’s 2011 GARC ScholarAthlete representative. A two-time member of the College Rifle Coaches Association All-Academic Team, he was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic all-District II at-large men’s second team in 2010. Campriani also was a member of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.

FRED SCHAUS AWARD Keri Bland and Chris Neild selected as WVU’s top captains Women’s track and field captain Keri Bland and football captain Chris Neild are this year’s recipients of the 2011 Fred Schaus Captain’s Award, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding varsity team captains.

A four-year track team captain, Bland, a native of Fairview, W.Va., won the Schaus Award for the third straight year.

A 10-time All-American with the cross country and track teams, she has already added one more honor to her career collection this season. Bland is the only female athlete at WVU to earn All-America honors in three different sports in one season (cross country and indoor and outdoor track, 2008) and is one of just two three-time cross country All-Americans in school history.

Having already exhausted her eligibility in cross country, Bland earned her latest All-America honor in indoor track, as she finished sixth in the mile at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 4:35.24. The first team honor was Bland’s second straight in the event. In the outdoor season, she earned third team All-American honors in the 1,500 meters.

A BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a member of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, Bland has been named an all-academic honoree by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Third was a team ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-American and first team alldistrict selection.

Bland graduated in 2010 with a degree in mathematics and is currently a graduate student in secondary education.

Neild, a nose tackle and pillar of WVU’s 2010 No. 3-ranked defense, earned the award after leading the Mountaineers to a share of the BIG EAST title as one of the team’s four permanent captains. The squad’s 2010 co-Defensive Player of the Year, as selected by the coaching staff, Neild also was given the John Russell Award by the coaching staff for leadership. The Stroudsburg, Pa., native, a two-time all-BIG EAST selection (first team in 2010, second team in 2009), also was named to two All-America teams as a senior.

Neild was selected by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft with the 253rd overall pick.

A member of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, Neild also was named to the dean’s list twice. He also was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star. He graduated in December with a degree in multidisciplinary studies.

28-27 / 14-13 BIG EAST • Coach Greg Van Zant won his 500th career game, a 6-3 victory over Seton Hall on April 21, to become just the fourth coach in school history to reach 500 wins at WVU. He joins former Mountaineer baseball coach Dale Ramsburg, former gymnastics coach Linda Burdette-Good and former volleyball coach Veronica Hammersmith • West Virginia earned the fourth seed in the BIG EAST tournament, falling to eventual tournament champion Seton Hall and Notre Dame in the double-elimination bracket.

• Shortstop Grant Buckner was drafted in the 26th round of the MLB draft by the Chicago White Sox and was named a third team all-BIG EAST member

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 24-10/8-8 BIG EAST

• The Mountaineers recorded the best start in program history as they went 16-0 to match the program’s longest win streak • With 23 wins, WVU earned an at-large bid to advance to the NCAA Tournament held in Waco, Texas. As the No. 9 seed, the Mountaineers defeated eighth-seeded Houston, falling to the No. 1 seed Baylor on its home court in the second round of the tournament • WVU’s NCAA appearance was the fifth in eight seasons and it advanced to the second round for the fourth time in the last five seasons • The Mountaineers achieved the highest-ever ranking (No. 6) in the Associated Press poll and remained at No. 6 for four-straight weeks. WVU spent 18 straight weeks in the polls • Mike Carey earned his 200th win as head coach at WVU on Feb. 19, 2011, with a 90-79 win at Pitt. He is currently nine wins from his 500th career victory • Senior co-captains Liz Repella and Madina Ali earned all-BIG EAST honors. AMYBIESKI • After 37 years at the helm, coach Linda Burdette-Good announced her retirement on April 3, 2011. She was named the second gymnastics coach at West Virginia in 1975, taking over a one-year program, and compiled a 644-263-4 (.709) overall record. She retires as the only WVU coach to earn 600 career wins with a Mountaineer team • Jason Butts was named WVU’s third gymnastics head coach on April 26, 2011. His elevation followed a five-year tenure with the Mountaineers that saw him rise from assistant coach to associate head coach • The Mountaineers finished sixth at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Athens, Ga., the team’s 28th NCAA regional appearance and 33rd overall regional championship • Sophomore Kaylyn Millick scored 9.85 and finished fifth on floor at the regional championship, the highest Mountaineer individual finish • Senior Amy Bieski capped off her brilliant four-year Mountaineer career ranked No. 2 on the all-time WVU career points list with 1,978.925 points. She also ranks No. 2 on the career all-around meets list (48) and No. 3 on the career 39.0-plus all-around scores list (23) • The Mountaineers scored 193.725 and finished fourth at the 2011 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship. The team placed first on vault (49.275) and floor (49.25), and seventh on bars (47.575) and beam (47.625) • Bieski won bars outright with a 9.825 score. She became WVU’s 35th league champion, and first since 2009. She was the sixth Mountaineer bars champion, and the first since former teammate Mehgan Morris won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009 • Bieski also finished second on floor (9.875) and fifth in the allaround (38.95) • Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer scored a career-best 9.9 and placed second on beam at the EAGL Championship. She also tied teammate Tina Maloney for second place on vault (9.875)

• Prior to the league championship, Bieski was named the EAGL Gymnast and Outstanding Senior of the Year. She was the sixth league gymnast, and fourth Mountaineer, to earn both awards in one season

• Five Mountaineers earned 10 all-EAGL honors.

Bieski and Sloanhoffer earned a combined six first team awards – Bieski was named to the vault, bars and all-around first teams, while Sloanhoffer scored vault, beam and floor honors. Additionally, Bieski also was named to the floor second team, and Sloanhoffer earned the team’s MVP award • Junior Nicole Roach and senior Emily Kerwin also were named to the all-EAGL bars first team, while junior Tina Maloney was named to the vault second team • The Mountaineers earned a league-best 13 EAGL weekly awards. Sloanhoffer scored an individual-best nine honors, including a program-best six EAGL Rookie of the Week awards; she also was a three-time EAGL Specialist of the Week. Bieski was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week three times, while sophomore Chelsea Goldschrafe scored one EAGL Specialist of the Week honor • Thirteen Mountaineers were named to the all-EAGL Academic Team, with seniors Bieski, Stephanie Keaton and Naja Johnson earning their fourth career awards • Ten Mountaineers were named to the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/ Women (NACGC/W) in July, 2010. BurdetteGood coached 77 NACGC/W Scholastic AllAmericans throughout her 37-year career.

• WVU ranked No. 22 nationally in average attendance for the 2011 season, averaging 1,501 fans in five home meets at the WVU Coliseum.

The squad also boasted the 15th-best singlemeet mark, as 3,206 fans were on hand for the team’s Jan. 14 home opener against Michigan State in the inaugural WVU “Beauty and the Beast” meet. The attendance mark was the third highest in program history. This year’s average attendance per meet was the team’s best since 2000 • Sloanhoffer had an immediate impact on the Mountaineers’ success. She competed in every meet as a three-event specialist, hit 40 out of 40 routines and scored 9.8 or better 30 times.

Her teammates awarded her the inaugural Linda Burdette-Good Award as the Most Valuable Gymnast. She was the first rookie MVP since Bieski shared the honor with Morris in 2008

He is the first WVU individual national champion since Marcos Scrivner won the smallbore crown in 1997. He is the first air rifle champion since Trevor Gathman (1996). ROWING • Earned three medals at the Head of the Ohio Regatta, including first place in the open eight race, and second and third place in the open doubles race • Had three boats finish in the top ten at the Schuykill Regatta, out of 35 entries • The Mountaineers closed out the fall season by earning two medals at both the Head of the Occoquan and the Philadelphia Frostbite Regattas.

Fifth, BIG EAST (indoors)/Second, BIG EAST (outdoors) Indoor • Posted an 18-place finish at the 2011 Indoor Championships, with only three student-athletes competing, marking the third straight season with a Top 20 finish • Seniors Keri Bland and Chelsea Carrier earned All-America honors.
