A CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM Simply put, the West Virginia University rifle team is the most accomplished collegiate squad. With 14 national championships to their name, the most recent captured just two years ago in 2009, the Mountaineers set the nationwide standard for sustained success. Six-year WVU coach Jon Hammond, himself a former Mountaineer shooter, has resurrected the program after a brief absence on the national scene and led them to four straight national championships, one NCAA team title, two NCAA air rifle titles and two consecutive Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) titles. Along the way, Hammond has recruited some of the world’s top talent, producing 35 National Rifle Association All-Americans. A combination of solid work ethic and exceptional skill level has helped the Mountaineers annually stake a claim at the nation’s top ranking. While individual success is applauded, it is the team’s unity and strive toward one collective goal – a national championship – that drives the Mountaineers daily in the WVU Rifle Range. Heart, dedication and desire – the pillars of the WVU Rifle program and the keys to the team’s continued success.

WVU ON THE GLOBAL SCENE A program rich in history, the West Virginia rifle team proudly boasts 14 former Olympians among its alumni, including current head coach Jon Hammond (Great Britain, 2008). At least one former Mountaineer has competed in every Olympics since 1976, with Hammond, Mike Anti (USA), Nicco Campriani (Italy) and Dave Johnson (USA) all participating in the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. Most recently, Campriani, the 2010 air rifle world champion, and current junior Petra Zublasing, both National Rifle Association All-Americans, captured Olympic quota places for Italy and will compete for a spot on the nation’s squad for the 2012 London Summer Olympics; Campriani was the first athlete of any sport to earn a quota for the 2012 Games. Hammond also has made a name for himself on the international shooting scene, as he became the most successful Scottish athlete in a single Commonwealth Games with four medal wins in 2010 – two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Many current Mountaineer shooters can be found competing on the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup circuit when not shooting for WVU. Additionally, the Mountaineers are frequent competitors at USA Shooting Championships.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Choosing to become a Mountaineer is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, folks across the state and throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. No school helps its student-athletes more than the people at WVU. Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. Your interaction with these groups is also part of your educational process. If you take advantage of these opportunities, it can have a positive effect, not only on your career as a student-athlete at West Virginia, but also on your life after you have donned the Old Gold and Blue.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Athletic excellence and strength and conditioning go hand-in-hand at West Virginia University. WVU’s strength and conditioning staff ensures all student-athletes are on year-long programs designed to improve the fitness capabilities needed in their sports. To keep athletes in peak physical condition, West Virginia offers a variety of training areas and an array of strength programs designed to increase performance. All student-athletes will have their own program individually calculated and updated throughout the year to ensure that every athlete raises his or her athletic ability and skill level. Equipped with excellent amenities and staffed by some of the finest strength coaches in the nation, athletes who come to West Virginia know that they are in good hands when it comes to their athletic capacity. Strength and conditioning for the sport of rifle is similar to other varsity sports, in that stresses are put on both the musculoskeletal system and the central nervous system with regards to proprioception and the cardio vascular system. The sport of rifle requires a great deal of muscular endurance and a high level of kinesthetic sense of awareness to fuel stabilization and balance. An efficient heart rate is also important for the student-athletes; the more efficient an athlete’s heart can pump blood, the longer he/she will have between heart beats to square their rifle on target.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Winning and working hard are important to the West Virginia University rifle team. But becoming successful and positive role models in and out of the range is just as significant to them. The Mountaineers give back to Morgantown and its surrounding communities every chance they get. “It’s really important for our team to give back,” says coach Jon Hammond. “Something that I love about Morgantown and West Virginia is that the athletic department and the teams are such a huge part of both the city and the whole state.” The Mountaineers especially enjoy working in outdoor settings, and regularly volunteer their time at The National Hunting and Fishing Days at Stonewall Jackson Resort. There, the team interacts with visiting children and gives lessons on gun safety. With coach Hammond putting an equal emphasis on academics and athletics, the Mountaineers are constant participants in the “Read Aloud” program, visiting local schools and not only reading stories to the younger students, but also encouraging older students to apply themselves to their studies. The WVU rifle team understands the privileges that come with being a Mountaineer, and in appreciation of the gifts they receive, the team in turn spends free time with those in need, especially the young patients at the WVU Children’s Hospital. Smiles are widespread when the Mountaineers visit and share their stories of success. “Without any professional teams, the student-athletes at West Virginia University are really put on a pedestal,” says Hammond. “In that aspect, it’s very important that they are visible and go out in the community and do whatever they can to help.” Beyond the organized team services, the Mountaineers take the initiative to volunteer extra time with outside groups. Among the extra activities members of the squad participate in are: • Wild Game Dinner • Eddie Eagle Gun Safety • Toys for Tots • Operation Christmas Child • Scott’s Run Settlement House • Habitat for Humanity
ATHLETIC TRAINING The West Virginia athletic training program looks to get its student-athletes back on the field in a timely manner while providing quality health care for its student-athletes and coaches. The scope of the athletic training services encompass various domains which includes injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that will enable the athlete to maintain an optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition. Multiple athletic training rooms are available for student-athletes furnished with the latest in technology and equipment. The athletic training staff will work in conjunction with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure the student-athletes receive quality care throughout their career at WVU.

FACILITIES Home to one of the country’s most tradition-rich programs, the WVU rifle range is a reflection of the long-term success enjoyed by the 14-time national champion Mountaineers. The range is highlighted by the presence of 10 MEGAlink electronic scoring systems, the most up-todate system used by some of the country’s proficient shooters, including 2008 Olympian and current WVU coach Jon Hammond. The technological upgrade at the WVU facility allows a student-athlete’s shot to be scored based on sound waves. With the advantage of a computer screen located at the shooter’s stand, team members can view the results of their shots immediately. The system adds not only an advantage for Mountaineer shooters, but also improves spectators’ view of the match. A large projection screen was installed in the viewing room so fans can now follow along shot-by-shot with the athletes. Another unique aspect of the range is the ability for shooters to work simultaneously. Team members can shoot in the smallbore position at the 50 foot targets while others can also shoot the 10m air rifle at the same time. Accompanying the many features of the range is a comfortable student lounge area where studentathletes can relax before and after meets. Other amenities include a gun room and a locker room.
Scoring Information College rifle competition includes two events: air rifle and smallbore. The NCAA initiated a new rule 2010-11 that mandated that each team can declare five scoring shooters prior to a match, and count the top four scores. The same five shooters do not have to count for smallbore and air rifle. The NCAA Championships is the only exception – the same five shooters must shoot smallbore and air rifle, with the team counting the best four scores in each discipline. Air Rifle Overview: Competitors stand and shoot lead pellets from .177 caliber guns at targets 10 meters away. The bullseye, or 10-dot, is one-half millimeter wide (about the size of the period at the end of this sentence). The Rifles: Air rifles can be either air or gas-powered and weigh up to 12 pounds by NCAA regulations. The rifles have metallic sights. Course Of Fire: With the new electronic targeting system, competitors have 105 minutes for 60 shots from the standing position. Perfect Match Score: A perfect score of 600 is the maximum for air rifle. Smallbore Overview: In smallbore or three-position rifle, athletes fire .22 caliber smallbore rifles from the prone, standing and kneeling positions at targets 50 feet downrange. The bullseye is a millimeter (slightly larger than the size of a period at the end of this sentence). The Rifles: Athletes shoot free rifles (weight limit of 17.6 pounds) that can be customized with special accessories and/or alterations that fit the shooter’s size and preferences. The rifles have metallic sights. Course Of Fire: Athletes fire 20 rounds per position for a total of 60 shots. The total time limit is 120 minutes. Perfect Match Score: A perfect score of 600 is the maximum for smallbore. MEGAlink Electronic Scoring Systems Near the beginning of 2007, the West Virginia University rifle team received a grant from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust to allow for the installation of a state-of-the-art electronic target system.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS NCAA titles are a common goal for all West Virginia rifle teams, and the squad has made good on its ambition 14 times since 1980, the most of any team. With a talent pool envied by most, the Mountaineers are always in contention for individual national championships, too, with15 student-athletes earning 19 combined individual titles, the most of any collegiate rifle program. Four Mountaineers concluded their WVU careers with two national titles: John Rost (air rifle, 1981, 1982), Web Wright (smallbore, 1987, 1988), Ann-Marie Pfiffner (air rifle, 1991, 1992) and Trevor Gathman (air rifle, 1993, 1996). Nicco Campriani is the most recent WVU national champion, as he won the air rifle title at the 2011 NCAA Championships; he was the first Mountaineer NCAA winner since Marcos Scrivner claimed the smallbore title in 1997, and the first WVU air rifle champion since Gathman.

NICCO CAMPRIANI Though he only wore the Old Gold and Blue for two seasons, Nicco Campriani left an indelible mark on the West Virginia rifle program. The four-time National Rifle Association AllAmerican tore through his brief Mountaineer career. With just 18 WVU career matches to his name, he secured almost every possible honor available to a collegiate shooter and capped off his brilliant tenure with the 2011 NCAA individual air rifle title. In addition to his national championship, Campriani was a repeat Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion. He also was named the 2011 GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year, and served as WVU’s GARC Scholar-Athlete representative. Campriani broke or tied every record in the WVU record book, and most notably he shot a collegiaterecord 600 air rifle twice in 2011, becoming only the second NCAA shooter to attain the perfect score. Also strong in the classroom, Campriani was named to the 2011 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America men’s at-large first team and earned two Capital One/CoSIDA Academic all-District II at-large men’s honors. He also was named the 2011 WVU Red Brown Cup honoree. One of the strongest shooters on the international scene, Campriani won the air rifle Gold medal at the 50th ISSF World Championship in 2010. The victory also was accompanied by an Olympic quota place, and Campriani earned the distinction of becoming the first qualified athlete among all sport events for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults. While many of the headlines center on the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include a string of eight consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American. To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. Coliseum Academic Performance Center – WVU Coliseum • 8,000-square foot facility providing individual and group study areas • State-of-the-art computer labs • Provides a quiet atmosphere and is open six days a week • The latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in • Center can be utilized around the student-athlete’s schedule • Center cost $1.3 million and opened in October of 2007 • Facility gift was provided by former Mountaineer great Jerry West and his wife, Karen, and the Robbins family. WVU’s Academic Support Services Provides • Team educational counselors • Tutoring services • Priority registration for student-athletes • Post-eligibility assistance Tutoring Service Facts • Over 75 tutors provide student-athletes with assistance in their classes • Upperclassmen, graduate students and community members serve as tutors in their area of specialty • Tutoring services are provided for all student-athletes regardless of scholarship status NCAA Certification West Virginia University received unconditional recertification in April 2010 from the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, recognizing that the University’s athletic program is in “substantial conformity with operating principles” adopted by Division I schools. The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution’s athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments, the NCAA said.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT Graduation Rates West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, over the past seven years. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year. The graduation rate for student-athletes is based upon the number of students who entered the University receiving athletic scholarship aid in a given academic year, and their progress over six years. The most recent figures are based upon the progress of student-athletes who entered WVU during 2002-03. APR The West Virginia University women’s soccer team, men’s basketball team and women’s cross country team received public recognition in the spring of 2010 by the NCAA for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. Student Athlete Advisory Committee The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the “voice of the student-athlete” on WVU’s campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. CHAMPS/Life Skills The many challenges that today’s college student-athletes face, both on and off the playing field, are unmatched in the history of higher education. Unfortunately, many students are not well prepared to face these challenges or encounter life issues that undermine health and success in college. To prepare student-athletes for the demands of college life and beyond, the NCAA developed the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success)/Life Skills program. In the spring of 1995, the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics initiated its own CHAMPS/Life Skills program. WVU was one of only 170 schools selected by the NCAA to participate in their national pilot program. Five programming “commitment” areas viewed as critical to personal growth are part of WVU’s model. They are: 1) academic excellence, 2) personal development, 3) career development, 4) athletic excellence and 5) community service.

The 2010-11 Season Leading a team that boasted seven seniors, five of whom comprised his first Mountaineer recruiting class, Hammond saw his fifth season at WVU become another championship year. Though narrowly edged by GARC rival Kentucky at the 2011 NCAA Rifle Championships, the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout the season, won the air rifle team title and finished second overall in smallbore. Additionally, senior Nicco Campriani won the NCAA air rifle title, the first WVU shooter to earn a national championship since 1997. Campriani also finished second in the smallbore competition. All told, the Mountaineers earned a combined five top-five air rifle and smallbore finishes, and six shooters scored eight NRA All-America honors. Posting an 11-2 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark, the Mountaineers successfully defended their GARC title and also swept the air rifle and smallbore titles. WVU was the first conference team to repeat as champions since Nebraska (2006, ’07). Campriani, the individual air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion, was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Following the season, Campriani and classmate Andy Lamson were named to the Capital One Academic All-America Men’s at-Large first and second teams, respectively, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Campriani was the third Mountaineer in program history to receive the first-team honor. He also was named the WVU Red Brown Cup honoree.
2008-10 Hammond coached a talented, upperclassmen-laden squad to an 11-0 record in 2010, the team’s first since 2001, and a GARC regular season title. The Mountaineers followed their unblemished regular season with a win at the GARC Championships, sweeping both discipline titles and walking away with the conference trophy. The victory was the program’s fourth overall and first since 2000. At his first GARC Championships, transfer Campriani won the smallbore, air rifle and combined score titles, and the Mountaineers earned 18 all-GARC honors, including eight first-team awards. Hammond was named the GARC Coach of the Year, his second distinction in three seasons. WVU concluded the 2010 campaign with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships; the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation for the majority of the season, finished third in smallbore and fifth in air gun. WVU placed two in the smallbore finals, and following the championships, seven student-athletes earned 12 All-America honors. Hammond made a name for himself in the coaching ranks in 2009, as he took a young, rising WVU squad to the NCAA Championships and returned with the program’s 14th trophy. A season that built on momentum, WVU went 11-1 overall, earned its first No. 1 CRCA ranking in over a decade, had seven student-athletes earn All-America honors, improved its GARC standing and finished second at the league championship, captured the nation’s air rifle championship and won the aforementioned NCAA title. The Mountaineers’ 2009 national-title run was especially noteworthy given the pressure the team overcame. After a poor smallbore showing on the championships’ first day, WVU found itself in sixth place. Hammond’s team regrouped and put forth a strong air rifle showing, with all four competitors finishing in the top 10. Additionally, Hammond’s squad was strong at the 2009 GARC Championships, as Tommy Santelli finished first overall, second in air rifle and fifth in smallbore. In total, WVU had seven top-10 finishes between the two disciplines. For his efforts all season, Hammond earned his first CRCA Coach of the Year honor.
Hammond has led WVU to three straight top-three finishes at the NCAA Championships

[ head coach • sixth season • west virginia, ‘04 ] Player Development Responsible for restoring the glory and tradition to the storied WVU rifle program, Hammond has recruited not only elite athletes to compete in the Old Gold and Blue, but he also has continued to teach and foster his team’s talent so each student-athlete is a stronger competitor upon graduation. Athletic accolades and recognitions go hand-and-hand with such advancements. The Mountaineers have earned a combined 35 NRA All-America honors, including 15 first team recognitions, since Hammond became head coach. Following a four-year drought, five Mountaineers scored five AllAmerica honors in 2008, including first-team recognition for senior Lafe Kunkel and freshman Brandi Eskew. Seven Mountaineers earned a collective 22 All-America honors in two seasons, as the 2009 NCAA champion squad collected 10 awards, while the 2010 team earned 12. The seven honorees each season were decade-high marks. Six Mountaineers earned eight total All-America honors in 2011, including back-to-back first team air rifle and smallbore awards for Campriani. Hammond’s leadership also propels the Mountaineers toward fruitful futures. Italians Campriani and Petra Zublasing have earned Olympic quotas for the 2012 London Summer Games, while Bryant Wallizer was invited to train at the US Olympic Training Center immediately following his 2010 graduation.
The Early Years In only his second year as head coach, Hammond led the 2007-08 rifle squad to an 8-3 record, a third-place finish at the GARC Championships and a sixth-place standing at the NCAA Championships, the Mountaineers’ first appearance in six seasons. Hammond guided five Mountaineers to NRA smallbore AllAmerica honors that season and also earned individual recognition, as he was named the GARC Coach of the Year and listed as the 2008 NRA Distinguished College Coach. Hammond took over the Mountaineer rifle program upon the retirement of long-time coach Marsha Beasley in 2006. That season, he guided the 2006-07 team to its first winning season (6-4) since 2003. Academic Achievements A strong proponent for achievement in the range and in the classroom, Hammond’s shooters have proven to be well-rounded student-athletes. Since his arrival in the fall of 2006, 29 Mountaineers have earned a spot on the annual Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association All-Academic Honor List, including a program-best seven studentathletes in 2011. The Mountaineers also have been well represented on the annual CoSIDA Academic All-America at-large teams. Campriani became the program’s third first-team selection in 2011, as he was one of 15 student-athletes named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America top team. Additionally, Lamson, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, was named to the second team for the second straight season in 2011.

Athletic Achievements In addition to his busy coaching schedule, Hammond still competes for the Great Britain National Team. Hammond started shooting when he was nine years old. As a junior, Hammond won both domestic and international honors, highlighted by the 50m prone World Junior Champion title in Barcelona in 1998. Following his successful second season as the Mountaineers’ coach, Hammond spent the summer of 2008 as an athlete, competing at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. In 2010, he competed at the 50th ISSF World Championshis, in Munich, Germany, and the Commonwealth Games in Dehli, India, where he became the most successful Scottish athlete in a single Commonwealth Games winning four medals – two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Hammond continues to shoot on the ISSF World Cup circuit on an annual basis and is currently ranked inside the top 25 in the ISSF World Rankings following a successful 2011 season. Prior to Coaching at WVU Hammond earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Leeds while competing on its rifle team. Hammond then journeyed to West Virginia to spend the 200203 season competing for the WVU rifle team while working toward his master’s degree in sport management. Hammond returned to Morgantown in 2006 and began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with the Mountaineers. In addition to his highly successful career as a shooter, Hammond also has volunteered his time to help others. While a member of the Leeds squad, he helped coach beginning shooters as well as assist the team with organizational tasks. Hammond also helped initiate Blind Shooting in Scotland with his father. He worked closely with a group from the Grampian Society for the Blind to teach basic rifle techniques. He gave the shooters positional and mental advice and undertook the task of raising funds for all of the equipment, as well as organizing a venue to hold the club’s matches.

One-on-One
[ a sit down with coach hammond ] Mountaineers how this team works and what we expect from them regarding work ethic, training and contributing to the overall dynamic of the team. Mike and Justin are the only two holdovers from the 2009 national championship team. Will you depend on their experience to motivate the team? Are there benefits to having a thirsty team that hasn’t won the NCAA title yet? There are pros and cons. I think the biggest pro is that the national championship is going to be something new again for the majority of the team. There should be a hunger and a desire to obtain that trophy. Out of the team, only two have won a national championship, and that is the goal we strive for year in and year out. There never should be complacency, but when you haven’t done something before, often times there is an increased drive to achieve that accomplishment.
The squad is relatively young this year, with only three returning letterwinners. How do you adjust your coaching style when you have so many newcomers in the fold? I think, at the beginning, it will take a little longer to figure out where they’re at. You have to decipher their tendencies, their strengths and their weaknesses. There will be more handson-coaching in the range to start with so I can get a feel for their real techniques. The younger student-athletes are going to need more instruction on the right techniques. I want to accomplish that early, not only so we can prevent bad habits from forming, but also so we can break any previous bad habits. I think there will be more active coaching early on this season. Throughout the first few weeks of the season, I will be building a knowledge base of where they’re at and also making short- and long-term plans for each individual.
Along those lines, the last three teams have been structured around the seven seniors that graduated in 2011. How does the team dynamic change when you lose so many letterwinners? You have to rely on the leadership that remains, and that is (seniors) Mike (Kulbacki), Justin (Pentz) and (junior) Petra (Zublasing). Adding so many newcomers in one season really gives you the opportunity to develop fresh ideas and bring fresh, new things to the team, such as a different atmosphere and different personalities. I think, as a coaching staff, we all need to remember that they are freshmen and they haven’t heard what we have been preaching for a while. We have to remember to keep that going and to make sure, every day, that we are keeping an eye on them and they are doing the correct things. Like I said, we really need to rely on the leadership in place to impress upon the new
30 [ WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY ]
At the same time, we absolutely will rely on Mike and Justin’s experience. Though only Mike was on the shooting squad at the 2009 championships, they both have experience and will play a really important role in how they want to lead the team this season and the changes they want to make. I think their motivation and desire for the team to be successful will filter down to the rest of the squad. The last three squads have set a successful standard for the WVU rifle team. Would you agree? I think so. I think that’s important, too. Any newcomer that joins the team knows the standard that is expected. We absolutely still expect to contend for the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship, to be ranked in the top three and to challenge for a national championship at the end of the season. Hopefully they all come in with their mindset prepared and share our expectations.
One-on-One
[ a sit down with coach hammond ] You always stress success in the range and in the classroom. There has been at least one CoSIDA Academic All-American on each of your last three teams. How important is it for the team to stay focused on its studies too? It’s really important. Those awards show that there is a high academic standard within the team and also expected of the team. I think we had some great individuals over the last several years, but our whole team has been pretty solid and our team GPA has been as high as it’s ever been. I think it’s important for the newcomers to understand that academics are important. Not only do I stress this, but our returning team members also stress this point. They are the role models for this squad, and they are all doing well in school - they go to their classes, they get good grades and they want to earn academic awards. It’s important for the freshmen to follow their lead. I always say that if you’re doing well in school, you will do well in the range. If you are someone that really struggles in school, you will face extra stress and pressures, and those may impact your performance in the range. Everything ties together. I would probably rather win a national championship than see everyone on the team earn a 4.0 GPA, but they have to do well in the classroom in order to perform to their optimum potential in the range. Live stats will be provided this season for all home matches, and the interest in the team is at a peak right now. How important is this benefit to the growth and retention of the loyal fan base?
It’s the next step forward. It’s really important, and a few schools already provide it. It’s a great tool for fans, parents and supporters to be able to follow the home matches live. I definitely receive a number of texts throughout matches, and it’s hard for me to keep up with them while I’m coaching. These live stats are going to provide them up-to-date scoring. It’s also another place for fans to connect with the team and track their success.

Your student-athletes are always competing. During the offseason, many of the shooters compete for their national teams at exclusive national and international tournaments. How does this additional experience further the team’s success? It definitely helps a lot because they all come back with new experiences and different motivations. The ones on the team that want to strive for international honors have an Olympian and a future Olympian on the team to look toward. For some of them, these matches give them something to do over the summer months. To do well is not only good for the team, but also is huge for recruiting as well. Prospects really take note of where the good shooters are. If our team members are out there competing well on the international and national circuit, it’s really important for our recruiting. That experience also gives them confidence for the next collegiate season.

Justin Pentz
The 2011-12 West Virginia University rifle team certainly looks different. Gone are the seven seniors that restored the program’s glory and led the squad to its nation-best 14th national championship in 2009. Combined, this class – coach Jon Hammond’s first WVU recruits – earned 23 National Rifle Association (NRA) All-America honors and set or matched every school record. Yet, this upcoming season is not about what the Mountaineers lost. Instead, it is about the intangibles that still epitomize WVU rifle – heart, dedication and the insatiable desire for a national championship. “That class was a fantastic group of athletes that worked hard for everything they accomplished, and they set a good example for this year’s team and the teams that will follow,” Hammond explains. “This year is a case of moving on, finding new talent and replacing that class with student-athletes that want to continue our tradition of success. “Any newcomer that joins this team knows the standard that is expected. We always expect to contend for the conference title, to be ranked in the top three and to challenge for a national championship at the end of the season.”
44 [ WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY ]
The Mountaineers return to the range following a 2010-11 season that saw them reach the brink of their second national championship in three years. Though the twotime Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) champions narrowly fell by three shots to Kentucky (4700-4697), Hammond believes the determination and resolve the team displayed over the two-day match will serve as a great example for this year’s squad. “Our goal this year is to do the best we can,” Hammond says. “We don’t necessarily have the talent or the experience we had last year, but I think we can make that up with motivation, work ethic and the overall freshness surrounding the team. Our goal is to maximize our potential and to take the best of what we have.” Leading the charge this season for the Mountaineers are seniors Michael Kulbacki and Justin Pentz. Freshmen when WVU brought the national championship trophy back to Morgantown, the duo has each shot in two national-title matches and has an abundance of pressure-match experience. “You have to rely on the leadership that remains, and that includes Mike and Justin,” Hammond explains. “We need to rely on
the leadership in place to impress upon the new Mountaineers how this team works and what we expect from them regarding work ethic, training and contributing to the overall dynamic of the team.” Pentz returns after his strongest season yet at WVU. A steady shooter with both guns, the DuBois, Pa., native not only counted toward the Mountaineers’ score at the NCAA Championships, but he also shot in his first final on the big stage and finished fifth overall in air rifle; he ended the season with honorable mention NRA All-America air rifle honors. Coupled with his ninth-place combined score finish at the conference championships, Pentz, a four-time All-American, proved that he can be depended on for two solid scores each match this year. He enters his final season having shot personal-best air rifle and smallbore scores of 595 and 588, respectively, last year. Kulbacki returns as one of the nation’s top air rifle shooters. Also a native of DuBois, the three-time NRA All-American, and 2010 first team air rifle honoree, shot at the national championships his first two seasons and placed sixth in air rifle at the 2009 match en route to helping WVU secure its NCAA title. Though his averages were down last season, Kulbacki still strung together several memorable matches, including a first place overall finish at NC State (1171), which included a second-place smallbore finish (580), highlighted by a school-record 200 prone score, and a season-best 591 air rifle score, good enough for second place. Junior Petra Zublasing joins Pentz and Kulbacki as a returning All-American. One of the strongest international shooters of the moment, the Appiano, Italy, native looks to have a huge impact on the team’s success in just her second season as a Mountaineer. She ranked behind former teammate Nicco Campriani in every season-average category one year ago and is expected to be the team’s top shooter this season. As a transfer, Zublasing was only eligible for the Mountaineers’ final seven matches last season, but she made them count, as she registered personal-best scores of 597 air rifle, 588 smallbore and 1184 combined score. Zublasing was particularly strong toward the end of the season, as she finished behind Campriani and placed second overall in air rifle at the national championships. She preceded that performance with a secondplace overall finish at the GARC Championships, as well as a second place air rifle showing and a fourth place smallbore finish.

[ three letterwinners return in 2011-12 ] Following her quick success at WVU, Zublasing returned to the international circuit and collected a slew of major wins, including a Bronze medal in the women’s 10m air rifle at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Fort Benning World Cup; the finish also earned her an Olympic quota for the 2012 London Summer Games. Redshirt freshman Thomas Kyanko is the fourth returning Mountaineer. Though the Wellsburg, W.Va., native sat out the 2010-11 season, he gained invaluable experience practicing with the team in the WVU Rifle Range. Kyanko also saw success at the 2011 USA Shooting National Championships over the summer, as he won the junior men’s 50m 3 position, finished third in the junior men’s 10m air rifle and placed ninth in the junior men’s 50m rifle prone. Additionally, he also placed third and 14th in the men’s 50m 3 position and the men’s 10m air rifle, respectively. Kyanko is expected to push for a counting spot on this year’s roster. Six join the Mountaineers this season, including four freshmen and a redshirt sophomore transfer, with most expected to contribute in some capacity.

Freshmen Meelis Kiisk and Amy Bock both bring international shooting experience with them to WVU. Kiisk, a native of Paide, Estonia, is a member of the Estonian National Team and is a frequent competitor on the ISSF World Cup circuit. Named the 2009 Best Youth Shooter by the Estonian Shooting Sport Federation, he also is a three-time Estonian air rifle champion and won the 2007 Gold medal at the Estonian Air Rifle Championships. Bock, an East Brunswick, N.J., native, is a member of the Puerto Rico National Team and also shoots on the ISSF circuit. She won the women’s 50m rifle 3 position Gold medal while shooting with the national team in Guatemala in 2011. Additionally, Bock is a multiple Junior Olympics qualifier with several championships to her name, including the 2011 New Jersey Junior Olympics state smallbore title. Rookies Taylor Ciotola and Matthew Martin round out the Mountaineer freshman class. Ciotola, a three-time state 3 position air rifle champion (2005-07), out of Pasadena, Md., also won the intermediate junior air rifle championships at the 2009 Junior Olympics. His smallbore skills outrank his talent in air rifle, though he should make quick improvements in the discipline. Martin, a member of the US National Development Team, hails from Eagle River, Alaska. A multiple national Junior Olympics qualifier, Martin won the 2010 Junior Olympics 3 position air rifle championships. Locally, he also won the smallbore and air rifle titles at the 2011 Alaska Junior Olympics State Championships. Martin is expected to redshirt this season.

[ three letterwinners return in 2011-12 ] Transfer Daniel Sojka arrives at WVU after shooting at Murray State during the 2009-10 season. A member of the Ohio Valley Conference championship team, Sojka, a native of Cracow, Poland, was a valuable part of the Racers’ run in the 2010 NCAA Championships, as he counted toward the team’s third place air rifle finish. He ended his only season at Murray State with all-conference air rifle second team honors and was named to the all-conference smallbore and air rifle newcomer teams. Sojka will sit out the season in compliance with transfer rules. Junior Chance Cover also joins the Mountaineers after shooting for the WVU Rifle Club the last two years. WVU’s 2011-12 schedule features five teams from the 2011 national championships, all former NCAA champions, including 2011 champion and GARC foe Kentucky. Including UK, WVU will face five of the seven programs that have won a national title since 1980: AlaskaFairbanks, Murray State, Army and TCU. After opening the season on the road Oct. 15-16 against Air Force and GARC foe Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., the Mountaineers will welcome Army to the WVU Rifle Range on Oct. 22. WVU will not travel again in the fall, as the team also will play host to Memphis, Murray State and Ole Miss. WVU returns from winter break and plays host to Akron on Jan. 14 before welcoming Alaska-Fairbanks on Jan. 20. WVU has won its last three shoulder-to-shoulder matches against the Nanooks and is one win short from tying the all-time series record. WVU closes out its road schedule with matches at Ohio State on Jan. 22 and at TCU, the 2010 NCAA champion, on Jan. 28. WVU’s Feb. 3 match against UK is one of its most anticipated of the season. The Wildcats earned a 2-1 edge over the Mountaineers last season, as they trumped WVU in the regular-season shoulder-to-shoulder match in Lexington, and at the NCAA Championships; WVU scored a victory over UK en route to the GARC title. The Mountaineers own a 14-7 regular-season advantage. WVU closes out its regular season with a home match against NC State on Feb. 5 before competing in an NCAA qualifying match on Feb. 18. The Mountaineers seek to defend their GARC title at the conference championships on Feb. 25-26, in Oxford, Miss. The 2012 NCAA Championships is scheduled for March 9-10, in Columbus, Ohio. Though the Mountaineers face a daunting schedule and must lean on newcomers for support this season, Hammond believes the returning talent and the program’s restored pride should help WVU in its quest for another national championship. “Our goal is to qualify for the NCAA Championships this year,” he says. “Hopefully, throughout the season, we will get to a level where we’re competitive and we know that we’re going into the national championships with a chance to do really well. Hopefully, we’re prepared to do that. “We may go unbeaten throughout the year, or we may lose two or three matches. We don’t know. Hopefully, we do the best that we can and see where we end up. It’s going to be an interesting year to watch the transition of this team and to witness the newcomers’ progression.”

Nicco Campriani
Three shots. Three shots were all that separated the 2010-11 West Virginia rifle team from its second NCAA title in three seasons. Three shots that may have solidified the 2007-08 Mountaineer class as one of the best ever to don the Old Gold and Blue. Coach Jon Hammond does not like to reflect on those three shots. He believes that the class, his first recruits at WVU, had already proven enough over their four-year careers; those three shots, while bittersweet, simply proved that the Mountaineers were not the better team at that particular match. It says nothing of the lasting legacy that will forever surround that class of seven. “At the beginning of the season, I thought that this was one of best teams assembled in a long time,” said Hammond. “We were definitely hopeful of good things, and we accomplished a lot. We have to be happy with what we walked away with.” Though the Mountaineers were just short of a nation-best 15th national title, the list of accomplishments and awards the team collected were worthy of lengthy praise. The Mountaineers not only won the national air rifle title, but they also repeated as the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) champions and shot a nation-best 4704 score three times. Additionally, senior Nicco Campriani won the NCAA air rifle individual title, WVU’s first rifle national champion since 1997. “It was definitely a good year,” Hammond said. “There were a lot of accomplishments – a conference championship, a second-place finish at NCAAs, many All-America awards and a solid record. I think, overall, we had a really successful year, and we learned a lot of lessons that should help the young squad we will field in 2011-12.”

The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers opened the season with ease, defeating Ohio State, 4676-4570, at the WVU Rifle Range. WVU remained undefeated against the Buckeyes and pushed its regular-season win streak to 18 matches. That streak was put to the test in just the second match of the season, as WVU welcomed No. 2-ranked and defending national champions TCU. The Mountaineers faced the Horned Frogs down a man, as Campriani was off shooting at the 2010 European Championships. The deficit proved to be too much, as the Mountaineers fell, 4675-4663, snapping their regular-season win streak. WVU earned the edge in smallbore, 2325-2315, and lost air rifle, 23602338. Seniors Tommy Santelli and Kyle Smith had strong showings against the Horned Frogs, finishing second (1173) and third (1169), respectively. Smith paced the smallbore field, finishing first with a season-best 586, while Santelli finished in second place with a career-best score of 585. The Mountaineers regrouped after a two-week break and opened their GARC season with a 4681-4586 home win over Memphis. The squad followed the victory with a win over No. 7-ranked Murray State the next day, trumping the Racers, 46754661. The Mountaineers depended upon their smallbore scores for the win, as they won the discipline, 2328-2306, but lost air rifle, 2355-2347. Campriani finished first overall against the Racers with a score of 1185, with junior Michael Kulbacki placing third with a season-best score of 1172. Campriani and Kulbacki also finished first (592) and third (585), respectively, in smallbore; both Mountaineers shot school-record 200 prone scores. WVU’s first road trip of the season was a success, as the Mountaineers defeated No. 6 Mississippi, 4686-4647, and No. 5 Army, 4680-4659; both matches took place in West Point, N.Y. The Mountaineers were dominant against the Rebels, not only sweeping the team discipline wins, but also placing three in the top three individual spots, with Campriani (1188) finishing first, Santelli (1166) second and senior Andy Lamson (1163) third. Kulbacki and classmate Justin Pentz had strong showings against the Black Knights. Kulbacki finished second in air rifle with a season-best 591 score, while Pentz placed third overall (1173) and in smallbore with a personal-best mark of 588. The Mountaineers closed out the first half of their season with home victories over GARC foes NC State and Nebraska. WVU defeated the Wolfpack, 4657-4498, and the No. 9 Huskers, 46564592. WVU returned to the range in January with little struggle, disposing of Akron, 4694-4540. The match marked the Mountaineer debut for sophomore transfer Petra Zublasing; the Appiano, Italy, native was forced to sit out the first semester in compliance with transfer rules. Also of note, senior Brandi Eskew had her strongest match of the season, finishing fourth overall with a score of 1172, second in smallbore (585) and fifth in air rifle (587); all three scores were season bests. The victory over the Zips nicely set up the annual showdown between WVU and Alaska-Fairbanks, the second in as many years in which the squads owned the nation’s top two rankings, with the Mountaineers checking in at No. 1 and the Nanooks at No. 2.
Season Review
[ 2011 ncaa runners-up ] The Mountaineers earned a decisive 50-shot victory over UAF, 4696-4646. Campriani’s career day aided WVU toward the win, as he shot a perfect 600 air rile score, tying a world record, though he did not earn credit for the tie as he did not shoot it at an international competition. Campriani became only the second NCAA shooter to ever shoot a perfect air rifle score. He also tallied a school-record 198 standing mark on his way to a 590 smallbore score. “Any day you defeat Alaska, one of the nation’s top teams, by 50 points is a good day,” Hammond said at the time. With the GARC regular-season title on the line, the Mountaineers traveled to Lexington, Ky., for a battle with No. 4-ranked Kentucky. A heated rivalry, WVU outshot UK three times throughout the 2009-10 season, including a regular-season victory in Morgantown, the team’s first over the Wildcats since 2003. UK proved to be too much in its home range, as it handed WVU its only conference loss of the season, 4696-4680. The Wildcats earned victories in both disciplines and walked away with the conference’s regular-season championship. WVU did not wallow in its loss for too long, as the Mountaineers came out the next day and trumped No. 11-ranked Columbus State in record-setting fashion, defeating the Cougars, 4704-4607. WVU became the first NCAA team of the season to shoot 4700 or better; the mark bested the team’s previous school record of 4697 by seven shots. Campriani shot his second 600 air rifle mark of the season and finished first overall with a school-record aggregate score of 1192; he also finished first in smallbore with a season-best score of 592. Zublasing also was particularly strong, finishing second overall with a season-high 1184

The Mountaineers closed out their home season with a 47044596 victory over No. 9 Nebraska in an NCAA qualifying match, shooting the collegiate team-score record in consecutive weeks. Included in the day’s victories was a school-record 2376-2330 air rifle victory. The win brought WVU’s 2010-11 record to 11-2 overall. Pentz had a career day in air rifle, shooting a personal-best 595 and finishing in second place. With momentum on its side, WVU took the 2011 GARC Championships by storm, shooting the record 4704 score for the third straight time and repeating as conference champions, the team’s fifth overall title. The Mountaineers were the first conference team to repeat as champions since Nebraska did so in 2006-07. WVU ran away with the title, as UK finished in second place with an aggregate score of 4672. WVU swept the discipline titles, shooting a school-record 2337 smallbore and 2367 air rifle. The team was exceptional in smallbore, as the Mountaineers swept the discipline’s top four spots, and five shooters finished in the top eight overall. Campriani repeated as the smallbore (591), air rifle (597) and combined score (1188) champion. Additionally, he was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year, becoming the third Mountaineer, and the first since 2000, to earn the shooter of the year award. In total, the Mountaineers earned 16 all-conference honors, including four first-team awards. WVU ended the 2010-11 season with a second-place showing at the 2011 NCAA Championships, falling by three shots to UK, 47004697; the title was the Wildcats’ first. Down seven shots to UK (2336-2329) after the smallbore competition, WVU mounted a furious comeback, shooting 2368 in air rifle to win the discipline title, the squad’s second in three years. Individually, the Mountaineers collected a handful of awards. Campriani won the air rifle title with a championship-record score of 701.0. He shot a near-perfect 599 in the open relay and 102.0

in the finals to become the first WVU air rifle national champion since Marcos Scrivner won the smallbore title in 1997 and the program’s 17th individual champion since 1980. Campriani also finished second in smallbore (689.0). Zublasing finished just behind Campriani in air rifle (698.1), while Pentz shot in his first NCAA finals and finished fifth in air rifle with a score of 694.7. Additionally, Santelli placed fourth in smallbore (683.8). The Mountaineers culminated their highly successful season with eight National Rifle Association All-America honors for six shooters. The six honorees were the most of any team. Campriani earned his second consecutive first team smallbore and air rifle honors, while Zublasing also was named to the air rifle first team. Santelli ended his career with seven honors, as he was named to the smallbore and air rifle second teams, while Lamson and Smith concluded their four-year careers with air rifle and smallbore second-team honors, respectively. Pentz also was honored and was named to the air rifle honorable mention squad. Campriani capped off his two-year run in a Mountaineer uniform with a pair of awards, earning Capital One Academic All-America men’s at-large first-team honors and the WVU Red Brown Cup award. Lamson was named a second team Capital One Academic All-American. Though the team finished just short of a nation-best 15th national title, Hammond is proud of its perseverance and believes that the squad’s legacy will shine brightly at WVU for years to come. “We’ve been one of the top three teams in the nation each of the last three years, and that’s somewhere we want to stay,” Hammond concluded. “We had a great chance at the NCAA Championships, but we just came up short against a fantastic score from the Kentucky team, and they fully deserved to be national champions. Overall, it was a great year, and we will just need to come back and stay the course again next year.”

Dr. James P. Clements [ president ]
WVU’s First Family, standing from left: Jim, Beth and Tyler Clements. In rockers, from left: twins Hannah and Maggie. Seated on lawn: Grace. James P. Clements has said that no university in the country means more to its state than West Virginia University means to West Virginia. Since becoming WVU’s 23rd president on June 30, 2009, Dr. Clements has focused on expanding the University’s role as a 21st century land-grant institution. With a Strategic Framework for the Future now in place, WVU is committed to excelling in five key areas: academic excellence, research and innovation, diversity, global engagement and enhancing the well-being and quality of life of our citizens. Dr. Clements has announced several initiatives in support of these strategic planning goals, including: adding 100 new faculty members to decrease the student-faculty ratio and support core and niche academic and research curriculums; building a new student health facility to increase wellness efforts; dedicating capital funds to expand outdoor recreational space for students; and increasing research to strengthen the University’s position as an economic engine as well as a leader in fields such as energy, biometrics and health sciences. Additional priorities are to continue offering world-class health care and – through WVU’s Top-10 nationally ranked Rural Health Program – remain committed to increasing state outreach in the health sciences. To that end, WVU recently announced plans to establish a WVU School for Public Health to train the next generation of public health professionals, conduct high-quality population health research and help the state confront preventable

health threats that increase health care costs and shorten lives. Other goals include finding more efficient and effective ways to use technology to drive progress, increasing the diversity of WVU’s learning community and developing an even broader global focus in preparing students for new international opportunities. Other initiatives focus on increasing student retention, increasing WVU’s doctoral program enrollment, enhancing leadership development and increasing operating funds. This momentum has carried over to record gains in enrollment, research and private giving. Student enrollment across all campuses reached more than 32,000; research contract and grant awards for the past two years averaged an all-time high of $176 million; and annual private giving to WVU reached an all-time high of nearly $100 million this past year. The University was also recognized as among the six percent of institutions in the country that the Carnegie Foundation classifies as highly engaged in service, and as one of the four best flagship universities in the country for access by the Education Trust. In addition to overseeing WVU and its divisional campuses, Dr. Clements chairs the boards of the WVU Research Corporation, the West Virginia United Health System and the WVU Hospitals. In total, WVU and its affiliates represent a $2.3 billion enterprise and employ more than 18,000 people. Dr. Clements also serves as an ex-officio member of the WVU Foundation and WVU
Alumni Association boards, and is active with national higher education organizations such as the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities and the American Council on Education. Regionally, he is a board member of the National Energy Technology Laboratory Regional University Alliance. He is co-chair of the Economic Development Team of the Power of 32, a visioning initiative across 32 counties in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He also co-chaired the WV Higher Education Policy Commission’s Diversity Initiative Council and currently co-chairs the WV Higher Education Policy Commission’s College Completion Task Force, as well as serves on the board of the West Virginia Business Roundtable. On a national level, he was nominated and selected to participate in the 81st Joint Civilian Orientation Conference through the U.S. Department of Defense, and invited by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to join a select 15-member Innovation Advisory Board that will guide a study of U.S. economic competitiveness and innovation. He also co-chairs the Association of Public and LandGrant Universities’ Energy Forum. Before joining the Mountaineer family, Dr. Clements served as provost and vice president at Towson University, the second-largest public university in Maryland. Under his leadership, Towson developed academic and student support programs that led to impressive increases in enrollment as well as retention and graduation rates. Towson’s externally-funded research increased by 36 percent during Dr. Clements’ tenure as provost. Prior to becoming provost, he served as Towson University’s vice president for economic and community outreach and as the Robert W. Deutsch Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. He was a four-time recipient of Towson’s Faculty Member of the Year Award given by students at the University. Dr. Clements has an academic background in computer science. He earned a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. and Ph.D. in operations analysis from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), as well as an M.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University. The fourth edition of his project management textbook was published in four languages and used in multiple countries; the fifth edition was recently released. At WVU, Dr. Clements is a tenured professor in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources’ Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. In October 2009, he was named UMBC’s Alumnus of the Year in the Engineering and Information Technology category. Jim is married to Beth Clements, and they have four children – Tyler, twin daughters Hannah and Maggie, and Grace.
Oliver Luck
[ director of athletics ]
Former Mountaineer quarterback Oliver Luck is West Virginia’s 11th Director of Athletics. Successful at each of his previous career stops, Oliver Luck looks to continue that streak at West Virginia University. A former Mountaineer quarterback, Luck, appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics by President James P. Clements on June 9, 2010, has already made strides in just one year in enhancing WVU’s role as a player in the collegiate world. “Oliver Luck is someone who has succeeded at the highest levels at everything he has done – from his college and professional football playing days to his academic pursuits and his professional business career,” said Clements. “He is the clear choice to carry forward what has truly been a golden era in athletics.” “It’s an incredible honor for me to be appointed as athletic director at my alma mater,” said Luck. “I care deeply about this school. I’ve had an opportunity to serve on the Board of Governors the last couple of years, and it’s given me a tremendous viewpoint of how important intercollegiate athletics is at a land-grant institution like WVU. “WVU is truly one of the outstanding land-grant universities in the country, and I am so pleased to be a part of its momentum and growth. This is a tremendous opportunity - a chance to return to a University and a state that I love at a dynamic and strategic time in its history.” In his first year, Luck has hired four head coaches while maintaining the superior level of success WVU has recently enjoyed. In addition
to new hires, Luck has overseen the progress of major capital projects, such as the WVU basketball practice facility, and fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph, in the classroom and on the field. Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. Luck’s journey to the big chair at WVU began in his native Cleveland, where in 1977 he was named the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year at St. Ignatius High. Luck chose WVU over Ivy League schools Harvard and Yale, embarking upon a career that saw him establish school records for touchdown passes and completions during his playing days, while also leading the Mountaineers to a 26-6 upset victory over Florida in the 1981 Peach Bowl. His best season came as a senior in 1981 when he completed 216 of 394 passes for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns. He passed for a career-high 360 yards in a 27-24 loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in the final regular-season game of his career. Luck ended his college career with 5,765 yards and 43 touchdown passes, both figures still ranking among the best in school history. Luck was a two-time team MVP in 1980 and 1981, and also received the Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU football student-athlete
coaches with the highest grade point average. The shooters two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic preview All-American was the recipient of Today’s review Top Five, presented for scholastics records by the NCAA and was selected by the National Football Foundation as one of wvu its 10 scholar-athletes to make a keynote media speech at its annual banquet in 1982. Selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers (44th overall pick), Luck spent four years with the Oilers from 1982-86. His most extended action came in 1983 when he started six games and finished the season completing 124-of-217 passes for 1,375 yards and eight touchdowns. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros and the Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck was in the midst of securing the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed by Gov. Joe Manchin in 2008 to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Betta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2008, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, an All-American quarterback and a Heisman Trophy contender at Stanford; Mary Ellen, a sophomore volleyball player at Stanford; Emily and Addison.
