mountaineer rifle ¡ Simply put, the West Virginia University rifle team is the most accomplished collegiate squad. With 15 national championships to their name, including the 2013 NCAA title, the Mountaineers set the nation-wide standard for sustained success.

¡ Eighth-year WVU coach Jon Hammond, himself a former Mountaineer shooter, has resurrected the program after a brief absence on the national scene and led the Mountaineers to six straight national championship appearances, two NCAA Championship victories, three NCAA air rifle titles, one NCAA smallbore title and four consecutive Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) titles. Along the way, Hammond has recruited some of the world’s top talent, producing 55 National Rifle Association All-Americans.

¡ The Mountaineers won their 15th NCAA Championship,

and first since 2009, with a come-from-behind performance at the 2013 National Championships. Sitting in third place after the smallbore competition, the Mountaineers outshot the field in air rifle to secure the title. WVU finished with an aggregate score of 4679, the second highest in NCAA history. The WVU rifle team is the only WVU program to win an NCAA title.

¡ Petra Zublasing swept the 2013 NCAA individual titles,

pushing her career title total to three with wins in smallbore (688.3) and air rifle (701.7). She became the first shooter to win both titles at one championship since 2001 and the second WVU student-athlete to win three career NCAA titles. A WVU shooter has now won the NCAA air rifle championship every season since 2011.

¡ A combination of solid work ethic and exceptional

skill level has helped the Mountaineers annually stake a claim at the nation’s top ranking. While individual success is applauded, it is the team’s unity and strive toward one collective goal – a national championship – that drives the Mountaineers daily in the WVU Rifle Range.

NCAA CHAMPIONS ยก NCAA titles are a common goal for all West Virginia rifle

teams, and the squad has made good on its ambition 15 times since 1980, the most of any team.

ยก The Mountaineers won their nation-best 15th NCAA

Championship in 2013, shooting a two-day total of 4679, the second-best score ever shot at the tournament. WVU overcame a one-shot smallbore deficit to win the title.

ยก With a talent pool envied by most, the Mountaineers also are always in contention for individual national championships, too, as 16 student-athletes have earned 22 combined individual titles, the most of any collegiate rifle program. Four Mountaineers concluded their WVU careers with two national titles: John Rost (air rifle, 1981, 1982), Web Wright (smallbore, 1987, 1988), Ann-Marie Pfiffner (air rifle, 1991, 1992) and Trevor Gathman (air rifle, 1993, 1996).

competitions, pushing her career NCAA title total to three, as she won the 2012 air rifle championship; she is the only Mountaineer shooter to earn three national titles. Zublasing is the second WVU student-athlete to graduate with three career NCAA titles, and the fourth Mountaineer to win two career air rifle titles. Additionally, she was the NCAA’s first shooter to win both championships since 2001.

¡ Zublasing and Nicco Campriani, a

2011 WVU graduate, made a huge impact on the WVU rifle program in just four seasons. In addition to her NCAA titles, Zublasing, a five-time NRA First Team All-American, earned four GARC titles and was a two-time GARC Shooter of the Year; she also earned the 2013 GARC Senior of the Year honor. Additionally, she was a twotime Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Second-Team selection, a two-time WVU Red Brown Cup honoree and was awarded the Order of Augusta, WVU’s most prestigious student honor.

¡ Campriani earned the 2011 NCAA air

rifle title. A four-time NRA First Team All-American, he was a repeat GARC air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion and was named the 2011 GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Campriani was named to the 2011 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica Men’s At-Large First Team and also was named the 2011 WVU Red Brown Cup honoree.

GLOBAL SUCCESS Once WVU’s season ends in March, the Mountaineers ¡ hit the international circuit and represent their home countries at various competitions.

Many current Mountaineer shooters can be found ¡

competing on the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup circuit when not shooting for WVU. Additionally, the Mountaineers are frequent competitors at USA Shooting Championships.

Most recently, junior Maren Prediger won Gold in ¡

the women’s 10m air rifle at the 2013 Summer Universiade, in Kazan, Russia. Additionally, sophomore Garrett Spurgeon won two medal’s in the men’s junior division at the 2013 USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle and Pistol, in Fort Benning, Ga.

OLYMPIC SUCCESS ¡ A program rich in history, the West Virginia rifle team proudly boasts 15 former Olympians among

its alumni, including current head coach Jon Hammond (Great Britain, 2008 and 2012) and 2013 graduate Petra Zublasing (Italy, 2012). At least one former Mountaineer has competed in every Olympics since 1976, with Hammond, Zublasing, Nicco Campriani (Italy), Eric Uptagrafft (USA) and Dave Johnson (USA, coach) participating in the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

¡ Campriani represented the Mountaineers exceptionally well in London, as he won Gold in men’s 50m

3 positions and Silver in men’s 10m air rifle. He became the first WVU athlete to earn the Gold medal since 1992, and the fourth former student-athlete to win Olympic Gold. Campriani also finished eighth in men’s 50m prone.

¡ Campriani became the fourth former Mountaineer shooter to medal at an Olympic Games and

the third to win Gold. Jack Writer (USA) won Gold in 1972, while Dr. Ed Etzel, the team’s sport psychologist, won Gold in 1984. Writer also won Silver in 1968, while Mike Anti took Silver in 2004.

¡ Shooting in her first Olympic Games, Zublasing placed just outside the final in both of her

competitions, finishing 12th in the women’s 10m air rifle and the women’s 50m 3 positions.

go hand-in-hand at West Virginia University. WVU’s strength and conditioning staff ensures all student-athletes are on year-long programs designed to improve the fitness capabilities needed in their sports.

¡ To keep athletes in peak physical condition, West Virginia offers a variety of training areas and an array of strength programs designed to increase performance. All student-athletes will have their own program individually calculated and updated throughout the year to ensure that every athlete raises his or her athletic ability and skill level. ¡ Equipped with excellent amenities and staffed by some of the finest strength coaches in the nation, athletes who come to West Virginia know that they are in good hands when it comes to their athletic capacity.

¡ The sport of rifle requires a great deal of muscular

endurance and a high level of kinesthetic sense of awareness to fuel stabilization and balance. An efficient heart rate is also important for the student-athletes; the more efficient an athlete’s heart can pump blood, the longer he/she will have between heart beats to square their rifle on target.

It’s really important for our team to give back. Something that I love about Morgantown and West Virginia is that the athletic department and the teams are such a huge part of both the city and the whole state. Without any professional teams, the student-athletes at WVU are put on a pedestal. In that aspect, it’s very important that they are visible and go out in the community and do whatever they can to help. – Jon Hammond

COMMUNITY SERVICE ¡ Winning and working hard are important to the West Virginia University rifle team. But becoming successful and positive role models in and out of the range is just as significant to them. The Mountaineers give back to Morgantown and its surrounding communities every chance they get.

¡ The Mountaineers especially enjoy working in outdoor settings and regularly volunteer their time at The National Hunting and Fishing Days at Stonewall Jackson Resort. There, the team interacts with visiting children and gives lessons on gun safety.

¡ With coach Jon Hammond putting an equal emphasis on academics and athletics, the Mountaineers are constant participants in the “Read Aloud” program, visiting local schools and not only reading stories to the younger students, but also encouraging older students to apply themselves to their studies.

¡ The WVU rifle team understands the privileges that come with being a Mountaineer, and in appreciation of the gifts they receive, the team in turn spends free time with those in need, especially the young patients at the WVU Children’s Hospital. Smiles are widespread when the Mountaineers visit and share their stories of success.

ATHLETIC TRAINING ยก The West Virginia athletic training program looks to get its

student-athletes back on the field in a timely manner while providing quality health care for its student-athletes and coaches.

ยก The scope of the athletic training services encompass

various domains which includes injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that will enable the athlete to maintain an optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition.

ยก Multiple athletic training rooms are available for student-

athletes furnished with the latest in technology and equipment.

ยก The athletic training staff will work in conjunction with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure the studentathletes receive quality care throughout their career at WVU.

FACILITIES SCORING INFORMATION College rifle competition includes two events: air rifle and smallbore. Air Rifle

Overview: Competitors stand and shoot lead pellets from .177 caliber guns at targets 10 meters away. The bullseye, or 10-dot, is one-half millimeter wide (about the size of the period at the end of this sentence). The Rifles: Air rifles can be either air or gas-powered and weigh up to 12 pounds by NCAA regulations. The rifles have metallic sights. Course Of Fire: With the new electronic targeting system, competitors have 75 minutes for 60 shots from the standing position. Perfect Match Score: A perfect score of 600 is the maximum for air rifle.

Smallbore

Overview: In smallbore or three position rifle, athletes fire .22 caliber smallbore rifles from the prone, in standing and kneeling positions at targets 50 feet downrange. The bullseye is a millimeter (slightly larger than the size of the period at the end of this sentence). The Rifles: Athletes shoot free rifles (weight limit of 17.6 pounds) that can be customized with special accessories and/or alterations that fit the shooter's size and preferences. The rifles have metallic sights. Course Of Fire: Athletes fire 20 rounds per position for a total of 60 shots. The total time limit is 105 minutes. Perfect Match Score: A perfect score of 600 is the maximum for smallbore.

MEGALINK ELECTRONIC SCORING SYSTEMS

Near the beginning of 2007, the West Virginia University rifle team received a grant from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust to allow for the installation of a state-of-the-art electronic target system. The system, produced by MEGAlink Electronic Scoring Systems, scores a student-athlete’s shot based upon sound waves. With the advantage of a computer screen located at the shooter’s stand, team members can view the results of their shots immediately. The system adds not only an advantage for Mountaineer shooters, but also improves spectators’ view of the match. A large projection screen was installed in the viewing room so fans can now follow along shot-by-shot with athletes. Fans also can follow the action at home via a live score link provided at WVUSports.com

rich programs, the WVU rifle range is a reflection of the long-term success enjoyed by the 15time national champion Mountaineers.

¡ The system adds not only an advantage for

services and programs to help studentathletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults.

While many of the headlines center on the ¡

Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include a string of 10 consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American.

The Mountaineers are provided

with an academic adviser who devotes their time to ensuring student-athletes are provided with any assistance necessary to ensure academic success.

To help its student athletes achieve ¡

academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in.

A total of 340 student-athletes were ¡

recognized for their achievement in the classroom last spring, at the annual WVU Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Banquet, honoring recipients of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

mountaineer rifle West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, ¡ over the past eight years. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year.

The West Virginia University women’s cross country team, men’s basketball team and women’s soccer ¡ team received public recognition in the spring of 2010 by the NCAA for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The women’s cross country team was one of seven Mountaineer teams to earn a perfect APR score in 2011-12 alone. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the "voice of the student¡

athlete" on WVU's campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Civic Engagement

The Center for Civic Engagement develops and organizes service learning and volunteer opportunities for students and faculty and consults with academic units on incorporating civic engagement into the curriculum. In 2011, WVU students contributed 205,000 hours of service to the community. WVU has earned the Carnegie Foundation’s Community Engagement Classification, putting WVU in the 6% of higher education institutions that Carnegie recognizes for engagement. Scholarships and Aid

Approximately $10 million a year is awarded by the WVU Scholars Program; more than 5,000 students benefit from this program annually. In addition, there are many different types of scholarships available based on academic record, financial need, group affiliation, or some combination of these factors. Parents Club

The Mountaineer Parents Club, with more than 22,000 members in clubs across the state and nation, fosters success by connecting parents and family members with the student experience. Hammond Head Coach / Eighth Season

Making good on a promise put in place upon his hiring, Jon Hammond, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, has returned the West Virginia University rifle team to national glory, implementing a strategy for success that has seen two national championships in five seasons, four individual NCAA titles, four consecutive Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships, one undefeated season, 55 National Rifle Association (NRA) All-America honors and seven Capital One Academic All-America recognitions.

The 2012-13 Season

Returning to the range after a 2011-12 season that saw WVU finish sixth at the NCAA Championships, Hammond rallied his squad in his seventh season around 2012 Olympian Petra Zublasing and a core of young, talented shooters, navigated a difficult schedule and earned the program’s second National Championship in five years. Ranked No. 1 nationally throughout the duration of the season, the Mountaineers overcame a one-shot smallbore deficit and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships en route to winning the air rifle team title and bringing the National Championship trophy back to Morgantown for a nation-best 15th time. Zublasing was instrumental in securing WVU’s victory, as she swept the individual titles

and earned the tag as the College Rifle Coaches Association’s (CRCA) Shooter of the Match. She became the first shooter to win both NCAA titles at one championship since 2001, and the second WVU student-athlete to win three career national titles in any sport. Additionally, Thomas Kyanko finished seventh in smallbore, and Maren Prediger placed eighth in air rifle. Following his team’s victory, Hammond was named the CRCA Coach of the Year, his second career honor. WVU scored 12 NRA All-America honors, including seven combined first-team accolades for Zublasing, Prediger, Taylor Ciotola, Meelis Kiisk and Garrett Spurgeon. The NCAA trophy was not the Mountaineers’ only hardware of the season, as WVU also won its fourth straight GARC championship, the only team in conference history to win four consecutive titles. The Mountaineers also won the air rifle and smallbore team titles, and Zublasing scored the smallbore and combined score individual victories. She was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year, and Spurgeon earned the GARC Rookie of the Year honor. In total, WVU scored 23 All-GARC distinctions. Prior to their postseason victories, the Mountaineers put together an 11-1 regular-season record, with the team’s only loss a narrow 4704-4695 defeat at GARC rival Kentucky. WVU established two NCAA records, shooting a winning 4720 score over Ole Miss at the WVU Rifle Range on Nov. 9 and tallying a 2381 air rifle score at NCAA Qualifiers, in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 17. The team also shot a school-record 2348 smallbore score at Army on Oct. 7 and against Memphis, in Morgantown, on Oct. 16. Additionally, Zublasing shot school records in smallbore (595) and aggregate score (1193). The season ended with success in the classroom, too, as Zublasing was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Second Team, her second consecutive honor; Kyanko was named to the men’s third team. The Mountaineers have now had at least one honoree in each of the last four seasons.

2009-12

Tasked with maintaining the Mountaineers’ level of success with a young team recovering from the loss of seven seniors, Hammond rose to the challenge in 2011-12. Nationally ranked in the top three all year, WVU bounced back from a regular-season loss to Kentucky to grab its third straight GARC title. The Mountaineers, winners of the GARC Sportsmanship Award, also won the air rifle title and were paced by Zublasing, the discipline champion and GARC Shooter of the Year. Additionally, Kyanko was named the GARC Rookie of the Year, and the squad earned 12 All-GARC honors. The team, boasting a 12-2 record, including a 5-1 mark in conference action, advanced to the NCAA Championships for the sixth straight season and placed sixth. Zublasing won the air rifle title, becoming the second Mountaineer to win the discipline title in as many years. She also finished sixth in smallbore, while Ciotola placed sixth in air rifle. As a team, WVU finished second in air rifle and eighth in smallbore. Following the national championships, six Mountaineers earned eight NRA All-America honors, including first team air rifle and smallbore marks for Zublasing, while Hammond was named the NRA Distinguished College Coach for the second time. Zublasing also earned a spot on the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Second Team. Leading a team that boasted seven seniors, five of whom comprised his first Mountaineer recruiting class, the 2010-11 season was another championship year for Hammond. Though narrowly edged by GARC rival Kentucky at the 2011 NCAA Rifle Championships, the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout the season, won the air rifle team title and finished second overall in smallbore. Additionally, Nicco Campriani won the NCAA air rifle title, the first WVU shooter to earn a national championship since 1997. Campriani also finished second in the smallbore competition. All told, the Mountaineers earned a combined five

top-five air rifle and smallbore finishes, and six shooters scored eight NRA All-America honors. Posting an 11-2 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark, the Mountaineers successfully defended their GARC title and also swept the air rifle and smallbore titles. WVU was the first conference team to repeat as champions since Nebraska (2006, ’07). Campriani, the individual air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion, was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Following the season, Campriani and classmate Andy Lamson were named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large First and Second Teams, respectively. Campriani was the third Mountaineer in program history to receive the first-team honor. Hammond coached a talented, upperclass-laden squad to an 11-0 record in 2010, the team’s first undefeated season since 2001, and a GARC regular-season title. The Mountaineers followed their unblemished regular season with a win at the GARC Championships and a sweep of the discipline titles. The victory was the program’s fourth overall and first since 2000. At his first GARC Championships, transfer Campriani won the smallbore, air rifle and combined score titles, and the Mountaineers earned 18 All-GARC honors, including eight first-team awards. Hammond was named the GARC Coach of the Year, his second distinction in three seasons. WVU concluded the 2010 campaign with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships; the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation for the majority of the season, finished third in smallbore and fifth in air rifle. WVU placed two in the smallbore finals, and following the championships, seven student-athletes earned 12 All-America honors.

Championships and a sixth-place standing at the NCAA Championships, the Mountaineers’ first appearance in six seasons. Hammond guided five Mountaineers to NRA smallbore All-America honors that season and also earned individual recognition, as he was named the GARC Coach of the Year and listed as the 2008 NRA Distinguished College Coach. Hammond took over the Mountaineer rifle program upon the retirement of long-time coach Marsha Beasley in 2006. That season, he guided the 2006-07 team to its first winning record (6-4) since 2003.

The Early Years

Player Development

Hammond made a name for himself in the coaching ranks in 2009, as he took a young, rising WVU squad to the NCAA Championships and returned with the program’s 14th trophy. A season that was built on momentum, WVU went 11-1 overall, earned its first No. 1 CRCA ranking in over a decade, had seven student-athletes earn NRA All-America honors, improved its GARC standing and finished second at the league championship, captured the nation’s air rifle championship and won the aforementioned NCAA title. The Mountaineers’ 2009 national-title run was especially noteworthy given the pressure the team overcame. After a poor smallbore showing on the championships’ first day, WVU found itself in sixth place. Hammond’s team regrouped and put forth a strong air rifle showing, with all four competitors finishing in the top 10. Additionally, Hammond’s squad was strong at the 2009 GARC Championships, as Tommy Santelli finished first overall, second in air rifle and fifth in smallbore. In total, WVU had seven top-10 finishes between the two disciplines. For his efforts all season, Hammond earned his first CRCA Coach of the Year honor. In only his second year as head coach, Hammond led the 2007-08 rifle squad to an 8-3 record, a third-place finish at the GARC

Academic Achievements

A strong proponent for achievement at the range and in the classroom, Hammond’s shooters have proven to be well-rounded student-athletes. Since his arrival in the fall of 2006, 40 Mountaineers have earned a spot on the annual CRCA All-Academic Honor List, including a program-best seven student-athletes in 2011 and 2013. The Mountaineers also have been well represented on the annual CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Teams. Zublasing concluded her career with consecutive honors, as she was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Second Team in 2012 and 2013. Additionally, Kyanko became the fourth Mountaineer in as many seasons to be recognized, as he was named to the men’s third team in 2013. Campriani became the program’s third first-team selection in 2011, as he was one of 15 student-athletes named to the top team. Additionally, Lamson, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, was named to the second team for the second straight season in 2011. Responsible for restoring the glory and tradition to the storied WVU rifle program, Hammond has recruited not only elite athletes to compete in the Gold and Blue, but he also has continued to teach and foster his team’s talents so each student-athlete is a stronger competitor upon graduation. Athletic accolades and recognitions go hand-in-hand with such advancements. The Mountaineers have earned a combined 55 NRA All-America honors, including 24 firstteam recognitions, since Hammond became head coach. The 2013 National Champion team earned 12 total All-America honors, matching a program high under Hammond. Five student-athletes scored seven combined first-team honors, and the eight honorees is a decade-high mark. Following a four-year drought, five Mountaineers scored five All-America honors in 2008, including first-team recognition for Lafe Kunkel and Brandi Eskew. Seven Mountaineers earned a collective 22 All-America honors in two seasons, as the 2009 NCAA champion squad collected 10 awards, while the 2010 team earned 12. Six Mountaineers earned eight total All-America honors in 2011 and 2012, including first-team honors for Campriani in 2011 and Zublasing in 2012.

Hammond’s leadership also propels the Mountaineers toward fruitful futures. Campriani and Zublasing earned spots on the Italian National Team for the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and Campriani won Gold in the men’s 50m 3 positions and Silver in the men’s 10m air rifle. He also finished eighth in the men’s 50m rifle prone. Additionally, Bryant Wallizer was invited to train at the US Olympic Training Center immediately following his 2010 graduation.

Athletic Achievements

In addition to his busy coaching schedule, Hammond still competes for the Great Britain National Team. Hammond started shooting when he was nine years old. As a junior, Hammond won both domestic and international honors, highlighted by the 50m rifle prone World Junior Champion title in Barcelona in 1998. Hammond competed in his second straight Olympics in 2012, as he represented Great Britain at the London Summer Games. He competed in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions and the men’s 50m rifle prone, finishing 17th overall with a 593 total. Following his successful second season as the Mountaineers’ coach, Hammond spent the 2008 summer as an athlete, competing at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. In 2010, he competed at the 50th ISSF World Championships, in Munich, Germany, and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, where he became the most successful Scottish Athlete in a single Commonwealth Games, winning four medals – two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Hammond continues to shoot on the ISSF World Cup circuit on an annual basis and is currently ranked inside the top 25 in the ISSF World Rankings.

Prior to Coaching at WVU

Hammond earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Leeds while competing on its rifle team. Hammond then journeyed to West Virginia to spend the 2002-03 season competing for the WVU rifle team while working toward his master’s degree in sport management. Hammond returned to Morgantown in 2006 and began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with the Mountaineers. In addition to his highly successful career as a shooter, Hammond also has volunteered his time to help others. While a member of the Leeds squad, he helped coach beginning shooters and assisted the team with organizational tasks. Hammond also helped initiate Blind Shooting in Scotland with his father. He worked closely with a group from the Grampian Society for the Blind to teach basic rifle techniques. He gave the shooters positional and mental advice and undertook the task of raising funds for all of the equipment, as well as organizing a venue to hold the club’s matches. Hammond is married to the former Lindsay Brooke.

JonHammond | You viewed the 2013 NCAA Championships as a job the Mountaineers needed to complete – and you walked away with your nation-best 15th national title. What did that victory mean to the team, and what does the second NCAA title in five years say about this program and where it stands today? I think the win meant a lot to the team. It definitely means a lot to the program, too. There’s a lot of history and tradition that surrounds WVU rifle. This was another added piece to the program. I think the win meant the most to the team. Other than myself, (graduate assistant) Justin (Pentz) and some of the support staff, no one associated with last year’s team had any connection to the 2009 NCAA win. It was something new for them and something they achieved themselves as a completely different team, and I think that really meant something to them. Last year’s victory was a culmination of a long season of hard work. We laid a lot of the ground work down the season before – we had a young team in 2012. It was really nice to just get the job done at the NCAA Championships. It’s a really hard, hard thing to do. It doesn’t matter if you’re No. 1 or No. 7 – you just have to go in there and get it done. We shot so many high scores throughout the year and we had so many good performances, but we were just focused the whole season on getting the job done at championships. It was a great result. There were a lot of emotions for me that weekend. There was relief that we had gotten the job done, and a huge amount of satisfaction for the team that we had achieved something that none of them had done before. You’ve earned the No. 1 spot in the College Rifle Coaches Association 2013-14 Preseason Poll. More so than in previous years, you enter this season with a very big target on your back. Do you welcome that added pressure? I think it’s something you just deal with. I think this year is going to be really close between a few teams. I don’t think that just because we won the NCAA title last year

and start this season as No. 1 that we’re the overwhelming favorites; there are a lot of good teams out there. It’s one of those things that we’re going to have to be very careful of focusing on ourselves and not becoming complacent. It’s always better to be ranked No. 1 than No. 10 at the beginning of the season. It shows that we have a strong team with a lot of talent and some good depth. Like we always say – we’re more concerned about the rankings at the end of the year. We’re very conscious that this is a different year and a different team. We probably won’t even say the word ‘repeat’ this year. It’s a whole new season, and we want to achieve the best performances that we can. Staying in line with your coaching philosophy, the 2013-14 schedule will challenge the Mountaineers and prepare them for the postseason. Do you feel that you will know where the team stands once March arrives? I think this is definitely a schedule I’m happy with. I don’t think it’s the most important thing in the world, and I don’t think it will decide our season by any means. There are certain matches that we want to have in the spring, and we’ve also built in enough breaks throughout. We have a heavy bunch of matches in the fall, too, to get that experience under our belt. This schedule has been designed in a way that will give us the best possible advantage. In the end, our schedule won’t determine anything. How we perform is going to be determined by how hard we work, how hard we train, how focused we are and how determined we are. You’ve lost a world-class performer in three-time national champion Petra Zublasing. How do you replace what she brought to the team and to the range? Will it be by committee? Yes, definitely – it’s absolutely going to be a group effort to replace Petra; she’s irreplaceable. Everyone on the team is capable of improving a little bit from last year, and I think if we do that we can improve as a team and continue to shoot really high scores. I don’t necessarily want to single anyone out. Right now, I think they’re all capable of having a strong impact on the team’s success. We had eight All-Americans in 2013, and seven are coming back. Those seven have

a great amount of talent and potential, and they’re all capable of pushing each other. Hopefully, they all put the necessary work into this season and have the motivation to continue to better themselves and we can all improve as a team. The team shot a lot of high scores last season, including NCAA records for team score and air rifle. Is the goal always to shoot better than the last score? I think our goal has to be to continue to evolve and shoot the best we can. When we crossed the 4700 barrier a few years ago, I never thought we’d see those scores bettered, and then last year we obliterated a lot of those scores and records. While Petra has moved on, I think you have to continue to set the bar high and strive to get better. The other teams are only going to get better, and they’re going to be chasing us, too. We can’t afford to sit back and pick and choose which teams we want to beat; we want to continue to be ourselves. We want to push our records higher, and we want each of our shooters to push their personal bests higher, too. Will we break any school records again this year? I don’t know. It’s a tough out, for sure. If it happens in any gun, it will be a heck of a match and a heck of a score. We have to just strive to be the best that we can. The 30th anniversary of the 1983 team, the first NCAA champions for WVU and the rifle program, has been celebrated over the last few months. As a coach, and as a team, do you ever stop and think about the legacy of the WVU rifle program and what it means to constantly be adding to that rich history? I definitely try and pass that knowledge on to the team and make sure they are aware of the proud history that surrounds this program. Over my coaching tenure at WVU, I’ve grown really aware of the team’s history and tradition. I would like to think that the student-athletes are aware of that when they are recruits. Certainly, it is something that I want to make sure I remind the team of all they represent and the history they are a part of. Day-to-day, they are 100 percent focused on classes, school and training, but it is always nice to stop once and awhile and be aware of it and use it as a constant force of motivation. A focus on academic excellence goes hand-in-hand with the team’s success, as does a solid appreciation of sport psychology. How do these two areas contribute to the Mountaineers’ achievements?

2013-14 | Academics are really a part of any successful student-athlete. A lot of the characteristics needed to be successful in the classroom will help you be successful in your sport, too. I’d like to think that we have a hard-working team, and they put in the work in the classroom. We also have a number of smart student-athletes as well. We definitely encourage them to do the best they can in school, to work hard and to keep up with their grades. That’s important. Sports psychology is incredibly important, too. We’ve been fortunate to have (graduate assistant) Ray (Prior) work with the team for the last three years. This will be his last year at WVU, and I think he’s had a huge impact on the team. His knowledge and the skills that he brings have been vastly superior to anyone else that we’ve had from the program. We’re also fortunate to have (former coach) Dr. Ed Etzel on staff, too, and benefit from his input and help as well.

Rifle

We do a lot of things with the team. They’re able to work a lot on mental skills – developing individual mental skills and group skills, too. We’ve been doing a few other things with counseling services as well, and we’ve delved deep into the world of mental planning and preparation. It’s a huge topic that’s very important to high-level sports, and I’d like to think that the support services the WVU student-athletes receive is comparable to the support that many national teams receive.

The hallway surrounding the WVU Rifle Range has been remodeled and now serves as homage to the years of success the program has achieved. How do you view this renovation? I think it’s a huge improvement to the overall facility, which was needed. It’s a tribute to the program – the history and the tradition. We have so many Olympians, national champions and All-Americans, and it’s important to recognize them. This renovation project is also going to add to the atmosphere for our home matches. There is an additional viewing area, and that was a critical need. These hallways showcase the program and signify that this is our space. This is the WVU rifle area, and we’re proud of that. We’re excited to show these renovations off to all of our visitors.

2013-14 | Preseason Notebook Protecting the Title

For the first time since the 2009-10 season, the WVU rifle team carries the nation’s biggest target on its back as the defending NCAA champions. WVU won its nation-best 15th national title with a combined score of 4679 on March 9, 2013, at Ohio State’s French Field House. The last team to win back-to-back titles was Alaska-Fairbanks in 2007 and 2008. The Mountaineers last won two straight titles in 1997 and 1998; those titles capped a four-year run of championships for WVU.

Coaches Pay Respect

The Mountaineers enter the 2013-14 season as the nation’s top team, as WVU was ranked No. 1 in the Preseason College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Top 20 Poll. WVU earned 12 of the poll’s 16 first-place votes. The Mountaineers ended last season at No. 1 after winning their nation-best 15th NCAA title. Kentucky, the 2013 national runner-up, was ranked No. 2, while Alaska-Fairbanks was No. 3. The Wildcats received three first-place votes, and the Nanooks earned one. TCU, the 2012 National Champion and last season’s third-place finisher, was No. 4, and Army was No. 5.

All-America Flavor

Seven 2013 National Rifle Association (NRA) All-Americans return for the Mountaineers this season: senior Daniel Sojka, juniors Taylor Ciotola, Meelis Kiisk, Thomas Kyanko and Maren Prediger, and sophomores Garrett Spurgeon and Patrick Sunderman. Four Mountaineers collected first-team awards last year. Ciotola earned a spot on the air rifle and smallbore teams, pushing his career total to three, as he was named to the 2012 smallbore honorable mention team. Prediger landed on the air rifle squad, while Kiisk and Spurgeon were named to the smallbore team. Kiisk and Spurgeon also were named to the air rifle second team. Kiisk owns three career NRA All-America honors, as he was named to the air rifle second team in 2012. Kyanko and Sojka earned second team smallbore honors, the first career award for Sojka and the second

for Kyanko, as he was named to the same team in 2012. Sunderman was named to the smallbore honorable mention squad. Senior Chance Cover puts the Mountaineer returners at eight this year.

New Faces

Jean-Pierre Lucas and Sydney Smith complete the Mountaineers’ 2013-14 roster. Lucas joined the Mountaineers last January but sat out with a redshirt. The Speers, Pa., native competed at the National Junior Olympic Championships in 3 positions. He is the 2007 Williamsport 1,000-yard world open light gun junior champion and the 2007 Ohio 1,000yard two gun overall state champion. Smith, a freshman out of Wayne, W.Va., was a three-time captain of the Junior ROTC team at Wayne High. She was a two-time (2011, 2012) champion in girls air rifle and smallbore at the West Virginia Junior Olympic Championship and competed at the 2012 USA Junior Olympics. Additionally, Smith attended the 2012 National Rifle Association Youth Education Summit.

Great Reign

The Mountaineers have made a home in the winner’s circle at the GARC Championships – and they show no signs of moving any time soon. WVU will shoot for its conference-best fifth straight title March 1-2, at Mississippi’s Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center, in Oxford, Miss. The Mountaineers became the first team to win four consecutive GARC titles with their 4705 two-day total at last year’s championship. WVU shot winning 2335 smallbore and 2370 air rifle scores. WVU owns a conference-best seven GARC titles.

The Best of the Best

The WVU rifle team prides itself on shooting against the nation’s best teams, and this season is no different, as coach Jon Hammond has scheduled a difficult slate for the Mountaineers. WVU’s 2013-14 schedule features seven home matches at the WVU Rifle Range and two of

the NCAA’s top-four teams from one year ago. The Mountaineers will open their season in Morgantown for the first time in three years, as they play host to Ohio State on Oct. 5. The squad will then open its GARC schedule with a match at Nebraska, the seventh-place team at the 2013 NCAA Championships, on Oct. 13. Three straight home matches, including shoulder-to-shoulders with Army and Mississippi, and a match at new GARC foe Navy on Nov. 16, close out WVU’s fall schedule. WVU resumes its season in January and will compete against NC State on Jan. 19. Following trips to the Winthrow Invitational and Memphis, the Mountaineers will close out their regular season against Alaska-Fairbanks and Kentucky at the WVU Rifle Range. UK finished second at last season’s NCAA Championships, while UAF placed fourth. WVU defeated UAF twice last season, in Fairbanks, Alaska, winning 4719-4670 and 4716-4651. The Wildcats got the better of WVU in the regular season, winning 47044695, at Baker Hall, in Lexington, Ky.; that victory gave UK the GARC regular-season title, its third straight.

Outside Success

The WVU rifle team was well represented in the international and national shooting scene this offseason, as several Mountaineers shot competitively away from Morgantown. Junior Maren Prediger won Gold in the women’s 10m air rifle at the 2013 Summer Universiade on July 12, in Kazan, Russia. Representing Germany, she shot 206.4 in the discipline final for the victory. Prediger advanced in the competition after finishing fourth in the qualification relay with a 414.7 mark. Junior Meelis Kiisk joined Prediger at the Universiade Games and shot for Estonia. He placed 20th in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions with a score of 1149. Kiisk also shot at the 2013 European Shooting Championships in July and earned his top finish in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions, where he placed 38th with an 1155 score. Sophomore Garrett Spurgeon won the junior men’s 50m rifle 3 positions Gold medal at the 2013 USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle and Pistol on June 4. He successfully defended his junior title and finished sixth overall with a two-day aggregate score of 2324, shooting 1161 and 1159. His final total benefited from a four-point boost from his fifthplace finish (420.8) on the first day of competition. He also finished second in the junior men’s 10m air rifle competition with a score of 1238.1. Spurgeon shot 616.7 and 613.4. He earned eight extra points with a final’s-best score of 206.

When the 2012-13 season closed, the West Virginia University rifle team stood alone at the top of the podium, as the Mountaineers won their nation-best 15th NCAA title with a 4679 showing at the NCAA Championships, March 8-9, on the Ohio State campus. The Mountaineers overcame a one-shot smallbore deficit and outshot the field in air rifle on the championship’s second day, shooting a winning 2363 score. Additionally, WVU finished third in smallbore with a 2316 score. WVU’s victory was its first since winning the 2009 title. The Mountaineers are the only WVU program to ever win an NCAA Championship. The title was the second career for coach Jon Hammond. The team’s winning aggregate score was the second highest in NCAA history; Kentucky won the 2011 title with a 4700 mark.

History-Making Talent

Following her appearance with the Italian National Team at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games, Petra Zublasing returned to Morgantown and wrote the final chapter in her illustrious Mountaineer career, leading WVU to its nation-best 15th NCAA title and winning two more individual national championships. The Appiano, Italy, native successfully defended her 2012 NCAA air rifle title, shooting a near-perfect 598 (99-100-100-100-100-99) and 103.7 in the finals for a combined score of 701.7 at the 2013 championships. The victory was her second in as many days, and the third of her career, as she also won the smallbore title. Sitting in second place with a 589 score, Zublasing shot a 99.3 score in the final, giving her a 688.3 total and her first-career smallbore win. Zublasing was the first shooter to win both NCAA titles at one championship since Alaska-

Fairbanks’ Matthew Emmons took the victories in 2001. She was the second WVU studentathlete to win three career national titles in any sport, as wrestler Greg Jones earned titles in 2002, 2004 and 2005. With two career air rifle titles, Zublasing became the first Mountaineer to earn a pair of career awards since Trevor Gathman finished first in air rifle in 1993 and 1996. A WVU shooter has now won the NCAA air rifle championship in three straight years. Zublasing was the first WVU shooter to finish her career with an air rifle and smallbore title. With her two wins last season, the Mountaineers now show 16 national champions and 22 individual NCAA title wins. Following her two NCAA title victories, Zublasing was named the College Rifle Coaches Association’s (CRCA) Shooter of the Match. She was WVU’s third honoree and first since Marcos Scrivner won the award in 1997. Additionally, she was selected as a conference honoree for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Zublasing was one of five Division I student-athletes selected as an Independent honoree. More than 140 NCAA female studentathletes, representing multiple sports across NCAA Divisions I, II and III, were selected by their conferences and by independent schools from a pool of 430 individual nominations for the national award.

Two additional Mountaineers qualified alongside Petra Zublasing for the air rifle and smallbore finals at the 2013 NCAA championships. Maren Prediger finished eighth in air rifle with a 692.1 score. She shot a relay-best 591 in the first air rifle competition and 101.1 in the final. Thomas Kyanko placed seventh in smallbore with a score of 675.0. Kyanko, an individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships, shot 580 in the relay and 95.9 in the final. WVU was the only team to place two shooters in the eight-man smallbore final.

Record-Setting Fashion

While the Mountaineers’ victory at the 2013 NCAA Championships ensured that the 201213 season was memorable for all involved, WVU also achieved several milestones that will be forever etched in the program’s record book. WVU shot two NCAA records, including a 4720 combined score in its win over Ole Miss (4624) at the WVU Rifle Range on Nov. 9, 2012. The mark bested the previous national record of 4717, also shot by the Mountaineers in their victory over Memphis (4634) on Oct. 16, 2012, at the WVU Rifle Range. Six Mountaineers combined for the record: Petra Zublasing, Taylor Ciotola, Meelis Kiisk, Thomas Kyanko, Maren Prediger and Garrett Spurgeon. The Mountaineers set an NCAA air rifle record in its NCAA qualifying match on Feb. 17, 2013, at Ohio State, shooting 2381. The previous high of 2376 was shot twice by the Mountaineers last season. Five shooters were credited with the record: Zublasing, Ciotola, Kiisk, Prediger and Spurgeon. WVU also shot a school-record 2348 smallbore score in its win at Army on Oct. 7 and in its win over Memphis on Oct. 16. Ciotola, Kyanko, Spurgeon, Zublasing and Daniel Sojka are credited with the record. Zublasing also set two Mountaineer individual records – smallbore (595) and aggregate total (1193).

Mountaineers Honored

Following their nation-best 15th NCAA Championships victory, eight Mountaineers earned 12 National Rifle Association (NRA) AllAmerica honors. Petra Zublasing was named to the NRA Air Rifle and Smallbore All-America First Teams. She concluded her Mountaineer career with five first-team awards. first-team honor, while Meelis Kiisk and Garrett Spurgeon were named to the smallbore first team. Kiisk and Spurgeon also found a spot on the air rifle second team. Thomas Kyanko and Daniel Sojka landed on the smallbore second team, while Patrick Sunderman was named to the smallbore honorable mention squad.

Conference Supremacy

The Mountaineers continued to strong-arm the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) competition in 2012-13, as WVU won its fourth straight conference title with a 4705 showing at the 2013 championships, at Mississippi’s Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center, in Oxford, Miss., Feb. 23-24. WVU won team titles in both disciplines, shooting 2370 air rifle and 2335 smallbore. The Mountaineers were the first team to win four straight GARC titles; the squad previously won three consecutive championships twice. WVU now owns a conference-best seven GARC titles. Petra Zublasing, the GARC Senior and Shooter of the Year, shot a school-record 595 smallbore and won the discipline title. Included in her winning day was a schoolrecord 199 standing score. She became the

fourth different Mountaineer to win the GARC smallbore title, and the first since Olympic Gold medalist Nicco Campriani did so in 2010 and 2011. Her win pushed WVU’s GARC individual smallbore title count to five. Zublasing and Maren Prediger also had strong showings in air rifle, with the duo finishing second (700.5) and third (699.7), respectively. Additionally, Meelis Kiisk finished sixth in air rifle (691.0), while Thomas Kyanko and Garrett Spurgeon placed fourth (684.4) and eighth (677.6), respectively, in smallbore.

On-Target in the Classroom, Too

Petra Zublasing and Thomas Kyanko were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic AllAmerica Women’s and Men’s At-Large Second and Third Teams, respectively. The award was the second consecutive career recognition for Zublasing and the first for Kyanko. Four student-athletes from the rifle team have earned six Academic All-America honors since 2010. WVU also placed seven student-athletes on the 2013 College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All-Academic Team. The seven honors matched a program-record first set in 2011. Those honored were: Zublasing, Kyanko, Chance Cover, Meelis Kiisk, Daniel Sojka, Maren Prediger and Garrett Spurgeon. 51

Jim Clements is West Virginia University’s 23rd president. WVU is the flagship university of West Virginia, with an internationally diverse student body of about 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students across approximately 200 degree programs in the University’s 14 constituent colleges, two divisional campuses and multiple healthcare sites. Dr. Clements chairs the boards of the West Virginia United Health System, the WVU Hospitals, and the WVU Research Corporation. In total, WVU and its affiliates represent a $2.5 billion enterprise and employ more than 20,000 people. Over the past four years, WVU has set significant records in private fundraising, enrollment, and research funding. Through WVU projects, as well public private partnerships, nearly a billion dollars of capital improvements are underway on campus, in WVU’s health care system, and in the community. Regionally, Dr. Clements is a board member of the National Energy Technology Laboratory Regional University Alliance. He chairs the Implementation Committee of the Power of 32, a visioning initiative across 32 counties in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In the state, he co-chaired the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s Diversity Initiative Council, and co-chaired the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s College Completion Task Force. In addition, he serves on the board of the West Virginia Business Roundtable. On a national level, he is secretary and incoming chair of the Council of Presidents of the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities (APLU), which places him on

the executive committee. He is also cochair of the APLU Energy Forum, chair of the American Council on Education’s (ACE) Commission on Leadership, and a member of the Business Higher Education Forum that includes Fortune 500 CEOs and higher education executives. Dr. Clements was the only university president selected for a 15-member Innovation Advisory Board to the U.S. Department of Commerce. He was also nominated and participated in the 81st Joint Civilian Orientation Conference through the U.S. Department of Defense. Before coming to WVU, Dr. Clements served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Towson University, the second-largest public university in Maryland. Prior to becoming provost, he served as Towson University’s vice president for economic and community outreach, and as the Robert W. Deutsch Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. Dr. Clements earned a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. and Ph.D. in operations analysis from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), as well as an M.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University. The fourth edition of his project management textbook was published in four languages and used in multiple countries; the fifth edition was released in spring 2012. At WVU, Dr. Clements is a tenured professor in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources’ Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. He is married to Beth Clements, and they have four children - Tyler, twin daughters Hannah and Maggie, and Grace.

Successful at each of his previous career stops, Oliver Luck continues that streak at West Virginia University. A former Mountaineer quarterback, Luck, appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics by President James P. Clements on June 9, 2010, has made significant strides in his first three years to enhance WVU’s role as a major player in the collegiate world. In his first year, Luck hired four head coaches, while maintaining WVU’s superior level of success. In addition to new hires, Luck oversaw the progress of major capital projects, such as the $25 million WVU basketball practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s soccer training complex. He also fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph in the classroom and on the field. In year two, Luck led WVU into the Big 12 Conference, oversaw the best fundraising year in school history, implemented several safety and crowd enhancements at Mountaineer sporting events, increased overall department revenue, continued a master plan for facility upgrades and watched his football program gain its third BCS bowl victory with a record-setting 70-33 win in the Orange Bowl. In year three, Luck oversaw the reseating of the WVU Coliseum to further increase WVU’s fundraising efforts. He added an 18th varsity sport - the return of men’s golf – teeing it up in 2015 for the first time since 1982, and he continues his tireless work on facility upgrades to keep the Mountaineers competitive in the Big 12. Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. Luck’s journey to the big chair at WVU began in his native Cleveland, where in 1977 he was named the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year at St. Ignatius High. Luck chose WVU over Ivy League schools Harvard and Yale, embarking upon a career that saw him establish school records for touchdown passes and completions during his playing days, while also leading the Mountaineers to a 26-6 upset victory over Florida in the 1981 Peach Bowl. His best season came as a senior in 1981 when he completed 216 of 394 passes for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns. He passed for a career-high 360 yards in a 27-24 loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in the final regular-season game of his career. Luck ended his college career with 5,765 yards and 43 touchdown passes, both figures still ranking among the best in school history. Luck was a two-time team MVP in 1980 and 1981, and also received the Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU football student-athlete with the highest grade point average. The two-time ESPN

The Magazine Academic All-American was the recipient of Today’s Top Five, presented for scholastics by the NCAA and was selected by the National Football Foundation as one of its 10 scholar-athletes to make a keynote speech at its annual banquet in 1982. Selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers (44th overall pick), Luck spent four years with the Oilers from 1982-86. His most extended action came in 1983 when he started six games and finished the season completing 124-of-217 passes for 1,375 yards and eight touchdowns. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros and the Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck secured the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. BBVA Compass Stadium was built and opened in 2012 adding to Luck’s legacy with the professional soccer team, and the overall Houston sports facility complexes. He returned in May, 2012 for the opening ceremony of the soccer stadium that he fought so hard for. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Beta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. “It’s an incredible honor for me to be the athletic director at my alma mater,” said Luck. “I care deeply about this school, and WVU is truly one of the outstanding land-grant universities in the country. I am so pleased to be a part of the leadership team assembled under President Clements at a dynamic and strategic time in its history.” He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, a former All-American quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist at Stanford and No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts; Mary Ellen, a senior volleyball player at Stanford; Emily, a sophomore at Stanford and Addison, who attends Morgantown High.

From Interstate 68 (East and West) • Take the Pierpont Road/Airport exit (7) • Follow signs to the stadium. At the second traffic light off the interstate, turn left and travel up Easton Hill. • Count two more traffic lights and turn right onto Route 705 and stay on this highway as it becomes Chestnut Ridge Road (through two more traffic lights). • To proceed to the Coliseum, go through the second light on 705 and two more traffic lights. Turn left at the third light. Follow this road around and go through three lights. The WVU Coliseum is located straight ahead. • The WVU Natatorium is located behind the WVU Coliseum.
