West Virginia University is on NCAA probation until July 7, 2013, for violations involving failure to monitor the activities of certain non-coaching football personnel by two former head football coaches and by the institution. The NCAA accepted without modification the University’s self-imposed sanctions, which include a public reprimand and censure; probation ; elimination, reduction and restrictions for certain non-coaching football personnel; limited recruiting related restrictions during Fall 2010 and Spring 2011; reduction of the amount of countable athletically-related activities for football student-athletes during Spring 2010; and reductions in the total number of scholarships awarded for football during the 2010-2011 academic year by two and the 2011-12 academic year by one.

“It was exciting spending a lot of time with these guys and seeing what was going on during phase one of our season, but more importantly, we are looking forward to phase two, which is the actual spring portion of the football-aspect of things. “The next five weeks we spend with these guys is going to be all about football. We get to spend 20 hours a week with them opposed to eight hours a week. The majority of it will be football. The first eight weeks, it has been play development more than anything. We are looking forward to doing the football aspect of things.”

OFFENSE

The offense has a major rebuilding project this spring, returning only three starters, 10 lettermen and nine players who have at least started one game during their career. Three of the best offensive players in the school’s history are gone to the NFL: record-setting quarterback Geno Smith, AllAmerican wide receiver Stedman Bailey and All-American, national award winner and all-purpose phenom Tavon Austin. The three interior linemen also are gone, along with several running backs and receivers. “We obviously lost a lot of production that we have to replace, which is just the nature of college football,” Holgorsen said. “You are going to lose good players, and it is going to be good for your program to see guys like Geno (Smith), Tavon (Austin), Stedman (Bailey) and Joey (Madsen) move onto the NFL – that is going to be positive for our program.” QUARTERBACK

Many challenges are ahead for the Mountaineer football program in 2013 as it enters the second year in the Big 12 Conference. Last season, a 5-0 start and a top five national ranking, including wins against Baylor in the conference opener and a road win at Texas, manufactured a high level of excitement around Mountaineer Nation that it hasn’t been experienced in several years. Then WVU’s fortunes completely reversed as it lost six of the final eight games, including five in a row at one point along with the Pinstripe Bowl against former Big East-foe Syracuse. The once promising season ended in disappointment when the first year in the new conference came to an end. Each spring brings a new beginning and a chance to right things, which is good news to third-year head coach Dana Holgorsen and his staff. “I think our players are extremely motivated at this point,” Holgorsen said. “Obviously, ending the season the way we ended and losing a lot of star power, we have a bunch of hungry kids that want to prove themselves. The 12 starters, 36 lettermen and 27 players who have at least one game starting experience from last year’s squad have been working hard during the first phase of training in January and February and now enter the second phase of offseason preparation, spring practice. According to Holgorsen, there will be plenty of position battles and leaders have to emerge for the Mountaineers. 2

Competition for the quarterback position will be between junior Paul Millard, redshirt freshman Ford Childress, walk-on Logan Moore and freshman Chavas Rawlins. “Paul has more experience and probably understands the offense a little bit better than the other guys but that doesn’t mean that we are going to give him more reps, because it is not where they are at right now, it is where they end up in six months. Ford is very motivated at this point right now. It is hard to be a redshirt freshman quarterback, so he wasn’t nearly as motivated a year ago as he is right now; he is doing well. “Chavas is where both those kids were a year ago and two years ago just being new and trying to soak it all in, learning things and hearing things for the first time. I haven’t seen him take a snap yet in college so we are going to have a lot of opportunities to evaluate these guys. “Logan Moore from Fairmont is doing some good things in the offseason. We will give those guys a bunch of different reps and kind of see where we end up. Millard saw limited action, appearing in seven games in 2012, finishing 9-of-19 for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Childress and Moore redshirted last year, and Rawlins joined the team in January as a mid-semester enrollee. RUNNING BACK

Even though Shawne Alston, Ryan Clarke and Donovan Miles finished their eligibility, the running back position is probably the most experienced and deepest on offense. “Probably the strength of where we are at right now is the running back position,” Holgorsen said. “That is where all our production is returning. You have Dustin (Garrison) and (Andrew) Buie, who have played a lot of football. You are adding Dreamius

Smith and Wendell Smallwood that are looking fantastic in the offseason. Cody Clay is another guy who will line up back there and will do some good things. I feel good about that position as far as what those guys are doing, and we are going to lean on them for some leadership.” Buie was the leading ground gainer on the squad last year, finishing with 851 yards rushing and seven touchdowns and was the fourth-leading receiver on the team with 28 catches for 318 yards. He had a season-best 207 yards and two touchdowns at Texas and also had 100 yards and a touchdown against Kansas. Garrison had early season struggles coming back from the knee injury he sustained at the Orange Bowl practices. He played in 10 games last year and finished fourth on the team in rushing with 207 yards and two touchdowns. Smith and Smallwood enrolled at mid-semester and look to be in the mix. Smith finished his sophomore season at Butler Community College in Kansas with 984 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging 8.2 yards per carry. Smallwood finished with more than 1,200 yards and 21 touchdowns as a junior at Red Lion Christian Academy. He transferred to Eastern Christian Academy for his senior season and averaged more than eight yards a carry. Clay was moved from inside receiver to fullback last season and showed a lot of promise. He played in all 13 games and started six as a redshirt freshman. He finished with two catches for 29 yards, averaging 14.5 yards per catch and a long of 19 yards. OFFENSIVE LINE

The coaching staff feels good about the tackle positions with the return of starters Quinton Spain and Curtis Feigt, along with Nick Kindler adding depth. The biggest needs focus around the interior line at the center and guard positions. Pat Eger has played the most games of returning offensive players, seeing time in 28 games and starting 19. Kindler and Spain have seen action in 26 games with Kindler starting one and Spain 14. Feigt and Spain return as the starters at both tackles, Kindler has spent time at right tackle and Eger saw starting time at right tackle and played right guard as well. “Offensive linewise, we have about 13 guys for coach (Ron) Crook to toughen up and teach them a bunch of technique and get those guys to grow up as well, especially on the inside,” Holgorsen said. “We have our tackles. We feel good about Quinton Spain, and he looks like a totally different person in the offseason. After eight weeks, that guy is big, fast and strong, and he is doing a great job from a leadership standpoint. We are excited about the things that he is doing out there. “Nick Kindler is one of the guys that is one of the better leaders on the team. He is doing a good job. We have Curtis Feigt, who has played a lot of football here. So the tackle position, we feel good about. “We have to get guys on the inside that can grow up. We are going to move Pat Eger inside. Pat has played a lot of ball here, but we are going to give him a shot to be a potential center. Tyler Orlosky is going to be a guy that can potentially play center. We have about four bodies – Tony Matteo, Russell Haughton-James and guys in there that we can get one or two centers out of that group right there. “Mark Glowinski redshirted last year and is a workout phenom. He is a guy that can bend and is strong and that has a great first step. We are excited about him. Young guys like Adam Pankey and Marquis Lucas - we will line those guys up and go.”

RECEIVERS

This is one of the greatest areas of concern offensively as 3,752 of 4,292 receiving yards, 87 percent, and 42 of 44 receiving touchdowns, 95 percent, are gone from last year. “Quarterbacks and receivers are probably a little different story, in that they just haven’t played,” Holgorsen said. “That is exciting to me as a coach. Coach (Lonnie) Galloway has been in here with these receivers trying to motivate those guys to get better and better, which he will do. “We have KJ Myers and Devonte Mathis, and they haven’t played very much. Connor Arlia hasn’t played very much. Jordan Thompson hasn’t played very much. A couple of new guys in Daikiel Shorts and Kevin White are physically unbelievable. Now, if they can run routes and hold up to the actual grind of football – that is what we are here to find out. Dante Campbell, Myers, Thompson and Arlia, a walk-on, are the only returning receivers with game experience. White, a junior college transfer, and Shorts, a freshman, are mid-year enrollees who look to break into the lineup. “Campbell will be out for the spring,” Holgorsen said. “He had successful shoulder surgery and will be back in June or July.” Thompson played in all 13 games and finished with 13 catches for 85 yards and Arlia played in nine games and finished with seven catches. Campbell played in 11 games and finished with two catches and Myers played in nine games and finished with two catches. Redshirt senior Terrence Gourdine, freshmen Devonte Mathis, Will Johnson and walk-ons Sam Eggleston and Chai Smith will compete for time. Quinton Spain

OUTLOOK

DEFENSE

The defense will continue installing its scheme under firstyear defensive coordinator Keith Patterson, who started to put it in during bowl preparation. This season, the unit looks to show marked improvement after giving up an average of 38 points a game and 472 yards a game, one of the highest numbers in the Big 12 Conference. This season, WVU returns seven starters on defense, 23 letterwinners and 18 players who have at least started one game during their career. “Defensively, coach (Keith) Patterson is continuing to get a scheme put in place,” Holgorsen said. “He got a head start on it heading into the bowl game. Obviously, we didn’t get near what we wanted to get into it, but still got a lot out of this regardless of how the game ended. “We’ve got the coaches in place and got the scheme in place, and we are continuously meeting with these guys to put the scheme and philosophy in place. We are excited to see these guys improve.” DEFENSIVE LINE

Two starters and seven letterwinners return on the defensive line. Will Clarke and Shaq Rowell return for their final season at defensive end and nose tackle and will be the leaders on the line. Clarke has played in 29 career games and started 22. Last year, he played in 12 games and finished with 26 tackles, including 13 solo stops, 1.5 sacks and tied for fourth on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss. Rowell also has played in 29 career games and started 12. He played in all 13 games last year, started 12, and finished with 42 tackles, including two tackles for loss and two pass breakups. “Will Clarke and Shaq Rowell are two seniors that we are going to lean on from a leadership standpoint to do a lot of things for us,” Holgorsen said. “They are having great off-seasons and are working hard, and their attitudes are great. “Then we have a bunch of young guys. A lot of those young guys had to play last year, which if you are playing five or six freshmen on the defensive line, that is not going to be advantageous to your football team. The good news is, those guys are all going to be back - guys like Korey Harris, Christian Brown, Kyle Rose and Eric Kinsey. Those guys are going to be players we want to see improve throughout spring.” Rose saw time in 13 games last year as a redshirt freshman, finishing with 25 tackles and two pass breakups. Brown, Harris, Kinsey and walk-on Dozie Ezemma saw their first action on the line last year and will work this spring to earn more time. As true freshmen last year, Brown played in 11 games and finished with 11 tackles, including two for loss; Harris saw action in 10 games and finished with four tackles and Kinsey played in all 13 games and registered four tackles and two pass breakups. Ezemma played in 10 games and finished with five tackles, including a sack. Trevor Demko, walk-on James Gayeski and redshirt freshman Noble Nwachukwu look to add to the mix. LINEBACKERS

The Mountaineers return seven players who will compete for the inside linebacker positions, along with mid-year enrollee Hodari Christian. Isaiah Bruce played at Sam linebacker last year and was the second-leading tackler on the team as a redshirt freshman. He registered 94 tackles, including 51 solo stops and was tied for

fourth on the team in tackles for loss with 6.5. He also finished with two interceptions, three pass breakups and had two fumble recoveries, including one he returned for a touchdown. “At inside linebacker, having a guy like Isaiah Bruce back, he was the second leading tackler as a freshman last year,” Holgorsen said. “He, right now, looks a lot different to me from a confidence standpoint and from a physical standpoint. He is almost 230 pounds now and has a great attitude and is a great person. We are going to lean on him a lot.” Nick Kwiatkoski also played Sam linebacker last year and finished with 28 tackles and three pass breakups. “Nick Kwiatkoski is a guy that has really come on strong in the offseason,” Holgorsen said. “He looks good and also weighs about 230 pounds. Those two guys are still young, and they are still sophomores. They have a lot of football ahead of them, and we are going to lean on those guys to continue to get better and better.” Shaq Petteway also played Sam linebacker and collected 42 tackles, including 26 solo stops, 1.5 sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble, Also returning at inside linebacker are seniors Doug Rigg, Tyler Anderson and Jewone Snow and junior Jared Barber. Rigg finished as the fifth-leading tackler on the team at Will linebacker with 58 tackles, including 32 solo stops, a sack, 2.5 tackles for loss, forced and recovered a fumble and returned an interception 46 yards. Barber had 34 tackles, including 18 unassisted tackles, a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Anderson played in 10 games at Buck linebacker last season and is being moved inside during the spring. He collected nine tackles, an interception and a pass breakup last season. Snow played in four games before shoulder surgery forced him to sit for the remainder of the season. He will go through spring practice but will be limited. He finished with 42 tackles, including 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss as a sophomore in 2011. Christian is a Class 4A All-State linebacker from McKeesport, Pa., and finished with 57 tackles, including 43 solo tackles, three sacks and two fumble recoveries in nine games as a senior. Wes Tonkery and Garrett Hope, along with redshirt freshman Sean Walters will battle at the two outside linebacker positions this spring. Tonkery was the backup at Star linebacker last year, playing in all 13 games and finishing with 10 tackles, an interception and a breakup. He has a foot injury and won’t be full speed during the

spring. Hope saw more action as the season progressed and was the primary backup at Buck linebacker by the end of the season. He played in 12 games and registered 14 tackles, including two tackles for loss. SECONDARY

Karl Joseph, WVU’s defensive MVP, returns at free safety after leading the defense with 104 tackles as a true freshman last year. He also led the team with 76 unassisted tackles, had a sack, was third on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss, second with six pass breakups and tied for the team lead with two interceptions and three forced fumbles. Darwin Cook returns for his final season at boundary safety. He was the fourth-leading tackler with 75, including 56 solo tackles, one sack, three tackles for loss, one interception, five pass breakups and tied for the team lead with three forced fumbles. “Karl Joseph and Darwin Cook have played a lot of football around here and are having good off-seasons,” Holgorsen said. “We are going to depend on them as far as bringing the rest of these secondary guys along.” Travis Bell and K.J. Dillon bring experience at safety. Bell is a redshirt junior who finished with 10 tackles and a pass breakup two years ago and played four games last year before sustaining a season-ending injury. Dillon played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2012 and finished with 20 tackles and had a forced fumble. Jarrod Harper, a redshirt freshman, and Malik Greaves, a midyear enrollee, are in the mix. Greaves was a three-year starter at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, Fla., earning conference honors and finishing with eight interceptions during his career. There will be a lot of competition at the cornerback positions this spring. That is an area that the coaching staff is looking for improvement as several freshmen saw a lot of time last year. “The corner position was obviously one that we talked a lot about,” Holgorsen said. “Coach (Brian) Mitchell is in here to continue to teach these guys from a developmental process. We played four or five freshmen corners. Those guys have to grow up. Those guys have to play.” Brodrick Jenkins returns as the cornerback with the most experience, playing in 36 games and starting 11. He played in 10 games as a junior last season and finished with 36 tackles, including 29 solo stops, a tackle for loss, an interception and a pass breakup. Ishmael Banks played in 11 games and started four late in the season, before he sustained a season-ending knee injury at Iowa State. He finished with 20 tackles, including 18 solo tackles. Terrell Chestnut showed progress and earned a starting job in three of the last four games. He collected six tackles and two pass breakups, before injuring his knee in the Pinstripe Bowl. “Ishmael Banks is doing a good job,” Holgorsen said. “Brodrick Jenkins had been banged up, but he has played a lot of football around here . The young guys (Ricky) Rumph, Vernon Davis and Nana (Kyeremeh) – they just have to keep improving, which is obviously the point of spring practice.” Kyeremeh played in all 13 games and finished with 16 tackles, two pass breakup and a fumble recovery, and Rumph played in nine games last year as a true freshman and finished with nine tackles and a fumble recovery. Davis sat out last season after transferring from Miami. Avery Williams sustained an injury early in the season and sat out and Brandon Napoleon redshirted as a true freshman. All three will be competing for playing time this spring.

Kicker and punter Tyler Bitancurt, punter Corey Smith, who also handled kickoffs and one of the top kickoff and punt returners in the nation, Tavon Austin have all finished their eligibility and these positions have to be filled. Redshirt freshman Josh Lambert looks to compete at the kicker position, redshirt junior Mike Molinari who is team’s holder and punted during parts of the past two years will be competing for the punter position and sophomore John DePalma returns as the team’s long snapper. “Special teams wise, Coach (Joe) DeForest has done a good job of improving the stuff,” Holgoren said. “We will do a lot of technique stuff in the offseason from a blocking and tackling standpoint. “Special teams have so many different moving parts. We are going to add 20 more bodies this summer so we have to develop our depth charts. We will do our best this spring to develop that, but it is not just about the kicker, punter, snapper and returner. It is about 50 other guys that need to learn how to take care of some technique stuff when it comes to special teams, and the importance of being good in space. “We will improve the play of (John) DePalma. He looks like a whole different guy. He just needed to mature. He is doing a good job. Michael Molinari is one of our workout sensations, so he is motivated to try and win the punter duty. We obviously need returners. Everyone that has returned for us over the last couple of years is gone, so we will try and develop a couple of those guys in the spring, and then we have some guys coming in that are obviously going to get a chance to do that as well.”

2013 SCHEDULE

The schedule will be tough once again with non-conference games against William & Mary, Maryland and Georgia State. This marks the second year of the competition in the Big 12 Conference with Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech coming to Morgantown this year, and the Mountaineers travelling to Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and TCU.
