The Mountaineers are frequent visitors to the WVU Children’s Hospital and help several different local community service projects.
COMMUNITY SERVICE ¡ Winning and working hard are important to the
West Virginia University cross country team. But becoming successful and positive role models on and off the course is just as significant.
¡ Each year, the Mountaineers work to give back to Morgantown and surrounding communities.
¡ The WVU cross country team has donated its time
to helping the Jerry Lewis Telethon that is aimed toward helping kids with muscular dystrophy and related diseases. The Mountaineers do their part to help the cause by answering telephones, which are constantly ringing with donors.
¡ The team also regularly donates its time and
knowledge by hosting and teaching local youth track clubs the fundamentals of the sport. Along
with strengthening the youngsters’ skills, they also teach the participants the importance of good sportsmanship, courage, determination and hard work.
¡ Coach Cleary’s student-athletes can also be
found reading to children at local elementary schools in the “Read Aloud” program. During their visits, the student-athletes read to students in several classrooms and encourage them to apply themselves to their studies.
¡ Mountaineer coaches and players also take part in Relay for Life of Monongalia County, the American Cancer Society’s signature activity, which offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.

2013 CROSS COUNTRY
mountaineer cross country West Virginia University offers a variety of ¡
services and programs to help studentathletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults.
While many of the headlines center on the ¡
Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include a string of 10 consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American.
The Mountaineers are provided
with an academic adviser who devotes their time to ensuring student-athletes are provided with any assistance necessary to ensure academic success.
To help its student athletes achieve ¡
academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in.
A total of 340 student-athletes were ¡
recognized for their achievement in the classroom last spring, at the annual WVU Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Banquet, honoring recipients of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

2013 CROSS COUNTRY
mountaineer cross country West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, ¡ over the past eight years. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year.
The West Virginia University women’s cross country team, men’s basketball team and women’s soccer ¡
team received public recognition in the spring of 2010 by the NCAA for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. These teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The women’s cross country team was one of seven Mountaineer teams to earn a perfect APR score in 2011-12 alone. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the "voice of the student-athlete" ¡ on WVU's campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Sean Cleary, one of the sport’s most talented coaches, is in his seventh season at the helm of the West Virginia University cross country and track and field teams after being associated with the program for more than 20 years. With his expertise in mentoring, training, conditioning and recruiting distance runners, the Georgetown, Ontario, native has built West Virginia’s cross country program into a national powerhouse with seven All-Americans and numerous all-conference runners. Cleary used the 2012 season to build on his cornerstone of competing and winning at the highest level as the team entered a new era in the Big 12 Conference. Sarah-Anne Brault returned from training for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London for her final season as a Mountaineer and ran in her fourth consecutive NCAA Championship. Throughout the season, Brault garnered all-conference honors for the second time in her career, allregion honors for the third time and finished her career by becoming the 13th runner in
program history to individually qualify for the NCAA Championship. The Mountaineers finished No. 8 in the country in 2011 at the NCAA Championship – their fourth top-10 national finish in five years. Cleary’s team finished in fourth place at the Big East Championship and followed it with a third-place mark at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. He then led his team to an eighthplace finish at nationals where Kate Harrison and Kaitlyn Gillespie became All-Americans, with Harrison finishing in eighth place, an alltime WVU best individual finish for the event. In 2010, Cleary sent Gillespie and Brault to the NCAA Championship, where Gillespie became Cleary’s sixth All-American with a 34th-place finish in 20:46 and Brault arrived in 71st place overall. In indoor track, three athletes were named All-Americans and all seven athletes who qualified for the outdoor NCAA Championships achieved All-America status. For the achievements, Cleary was named the NCAA’s Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the

Coach Sean Cleary and his staff earn 2007 Coaching Staff of the Year honors Year for track and field. The 2009-10 season was equally successful as the team achieved sixth place at the NCAA Championship, its third straight top-10 finish, and Clara Grandt, Keri Bland and Marie-Louise Asselin earned All-America status. Asselin and Bland achieved the honor for the third time in their WVU careers, while Grandt earned her first. Ranked in the top 10 all year, the team received its highest ranking as a program at No. 3 midway through the season. Between indoor and outdoor track that year, 11 All-America honors were distributed and Bland, Grandt and Asselin became the first Mountaineers to achieve the status in three sports in the same year. Overall, 17 All-American nominations were given to WVU athletes between cross country, indoor and outdoor track during the year. At the completion of the 2009-10 cross country and track seasons, WVU was recognized as the fifth-best team on the Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award list announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association

(USTFCCCA). The award, given annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division I women’s cross country and track and field programs, honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division I Championships over three seasons. In 2008, the team had its best-ever finish at the NCAA Championships, arriving in fourth after being ranked No. 5 most of the year. WVU won its second NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championship, and Cleary was named Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year. Asselin became the first runner in school history to win an individual Big East title, and the team finished in second. In Cleary’s first season as head coach in 2007, the team became Big East champions for the first time in school history and a thenschool record three runners were named AllBig East as the team entered the top 25 for the first time in three years. For the fourth year in a row, the Mountaineers were named an All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA. The group was ranked 17th in the nation in terms of overall grade point average (GPA) and had the secondhighest GPA in the Big East with a 3.61 average. Cleary previously had been the distance coach in 2005 and 2006 and was a full-time assistant from 2001-04, serving as the primary coach and trainer for the cross country team during that span. Prior to the 2001 season, Cleary served as a graduate assistant coach for eight seasons at WVU. From 1998 to 2004, WVU’s distance medley relay team qualified for nationals seven consecutive years, the second-longest streak in the nation, under Cleary’s watch. Cleary has coached 17 athletes who have

competed at the World Track and Field, World Cross Country, World University Games and Pan American Championships. Cleary worked closely with former head coach Martin Pushkin in building the women’s cross country team into a national contender. Cleary was responsible for the recruitment and mentoring of NCAA mile champion Kate Vermeulen as well as All-Americans Rebecca Stallwood, Merissa Sexsmith and Megan Metcalfe. Cleary has produced several All-American runners, including four-time All-American Bob Donker, NCAA cross country AllAmericans Wynston Alberts, Mike Dudley and Steve Bohan, two-time NCAA qualifiers Jeff Metcaff and Bohan, NCAA qualifier Ian Collings and 5,000-meter All-American Mark Vilardo. A Look at the 2013 Mountaineers XC Season Preview The Mountaineers enter 2013 with one of their most talented teams in recent years. A solid mix of experience, youth and overall depth has West Virginia poised to compete nationally, while running in its second season in the Big 12 Conference. Newcomers This year’s Mountaineer squad features 10 freshmen and five sophomores on their roster in 2013. The group is filled with young runners with the potential to immediately contribute to the program. “Time will tell if this class turns out to be the finest or one of the finest classes, but we are excited about their high school accomplishments and their desire to come in and run for the Blue and Gold,” Cleary says. Cleary’s Foundation Cleary enters his 22nd season with Mountaineers, and seventh as head coach. He has experienced a great deal of success and has seen his runners garner five cross country All-America accolades and 25 track All-America recognitions since 2007. “ I think we take care of our runners, make plans and cycle them in and out of competition,” Cleary says. “Ultimately, I want to see every single kid blow away expectations.” Academic Success The Mountaineers have experienced
a great deal of success off the field with Cleary at the helm. Six runners from the 2012 team earned USTFCCCA AllAcademic distinctions. The WVU cross country team posted a perfect APR score of 1,000 in 2011, and followed that up with a near-perfect score of 996 in 2012. “A vast majority of the girls in our program could go to Harvard, Princeton, Yale or other premiere academic institutions,” Cleary says. “They could be at these types of institutions, but they have faith that West Virginia, both athletically and academically, can allow them to reach their goals.” Gillespie Emerges as New Leader Kaitlyn Gillespie is poised to step in as the face of the WVU cross country team in 2013. Gillespie earned All-America honors in 2010 and 2011, however was forced to take a medical redshirt in 2012. She is a talented senior runner with the opportunity to earn a third All-America distinction this season. “Everyone has a role as seniors. I expect them to take care of these new faces, and I see Katie as the backbone of that,” Cleary says. “She is an all-around student-athlete and has the sheer desire and work ethnic needed to be successful.” Local Roots Coach Cleary added three more runners from the state of West Virginia this season, bringing the team total to 48 | West Virginia University
eight. The Mountaineers have always had a roster filled with local talent and the local interest in distance running has recently increased. In fact, five runners on the roster are Morgantown, W.Va., natives. “The state of West Virginia is filled with talented runners,” Cleary says. “Sometimes they get overlooked when it comes to recruiting, but they always seem to prove their worth in college, and I’m always thrilled to see local talent develop.” Cleary Named President of USTFCCCA After serving as the vice president for two years, Cleary was named the President of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The non-profit organization represents Track & Field and Cross Country coaches at all levels. It serves as an advocate for both sports, while also providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of its membership. “I really believe it’s a privilege to be the head coach at West Virginia and with that comes the responsibility that we hold this institution in a great light,” Cleary says. “We’re shaping and scoping the future of the sport. But I think the biggest thing as coaches is we are mentors to these kids, we’re mentors to other coaches and we are put in positions to build relationships with high school coaches and other coaches, where we should give back.”

......................... tremendous improvement last ......................... showed year. And locally, we’re looking at Sarah
Martinelli, having come off a breakthrough junior year, to step up as one of the leaders in the program this year. We had a lot of redshirting last year. Those kids gained experience. It’s one of the better blends of senior leadership, depth and incoming talent - probably the way that any successful program should be run. It will be exciting to see this group unfold.
Sarah Martinelli International Success The Mountaineers were wellrepresented in the 40th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Poland in March 2013. Three WVU runners crossed the finish line in the top 50, with all three representing different countries. Sophomore Sydney Scott finished 38th, while representing the United States. Freshman Jillian Forsey crossed the finish line in 49th, while representing Canada and freshman Amy Cashin finished 50th representing Australia. This is just one example of the multiple international honors West Virginia runners have recently received.
One-on-One With Coach Cleary What are the expectations for the eight newcomers you’ve added this season and what do they bring to the Mountaineer program? The graduating seniors this past year completed one of the finest runs in program history. What’s exciting about our future is that we still have excellent depth returning with arguably the best recruiting class on paper. Eight new faces - four Canadians, an Australian, a few really good West Virginia kids, and we’re adding another from Ohio. Leading this year’s team should be Katie Gillespie - a two-time All-American. Kelly Williams
Senior Kaitlyn Gillespie sat out last season, but has two All-American distinctions to her name. Is she poised for an impressive senior campaign? Katie Gillespie is the epitome of what an all-around student-athlete should be. A 3.9 GPA and a two-time All-American. What separates her from the rest isn’t the fact she’s been an All-American, it’s the pursuit of excellence. And no stone will be unturned in her pursuit to make a comeback and get to the front of the NCAA Championships again. She’s been out 15 months. My feeling is that when she actually puts on the uniform, she will have not missed anything. I’m excited about that. Within the classroom, on the field, just sheer desire and work ethic. She’s cross training two to three times a day on a bike and in a pool. In addition to minimal running as we’re trying to bring her back. I’m beyond excited and expect very big things from her this year. Rarely do I come across a student-athlete who has my goals for them or higher, and Katie is definitely one of those student-athletes. She should be the backbone of it. Eight freshmen for us is huge. Those kids are going to need a

lot of attention and the seniors are really going to need to step up and help. What has been your philosophy when it comes to academics and why has your team been so successful in the classroom? Years ago, when I first started recruiting to West Virginia, you heard academic stereotypes - very frustrating to me. I can actually lay claim to statistics that say there hasn’t been a female studentathlete in our program who came in with a goal and didn’t achieve it. Meaning, if they wanted to become a doctor, they became a doctor. If they wanted to become a dentist, they became a dentist, and on and on. It’s a 100 percent success rate for us. And, as time goes on, it becomes easier to bring in a higher level of student-athlete because of the kids we’ve had proving this. One of the prouder statistics is that there has never been someone who didn’t come in, work hard and not achieve what their goal was when they entered the door. I hope that continues. Part of that is recruiting - those are the types of kids we are recruiting. On the flip side, we have a philosophy here at West Virginia, and that is we are studentathlete driven. I am convinced that as a coaching staff we can take a look at the needs of each and every one of them individually, take care of their academic needs, not train them and treat them like robots, but allow them to come together and still create a great team atmosphere. If someone has a chemistry exam and I know there is a minor meet, and I think it will help this kid to stay home and take this exam and not have to take a cumulative at the end of the year, then I’ll leave them at home; that’s a coaching philosophy. Your program has been extremely successful since you took over. How have you been able to quietly build one of the best programs on campus? When I first took the job, I came up with bullet points for myself and I said, ‘We’re going to have tremendous students.’ It wasn’t just a vision of mine. We had good students prior to me. But I saw a correlation between kids who were focused and took care of their business and athletic performances. In distance running, if a kid comes in and works really hard and stays focused, and just loves the sport, we’re going to get a lot out of them. If we’re starting with a good product as a student, I’ll take someone who is a little less talented as an athlete, knowing that in distance running, it’s a sport with sheer hard work. There is a lot of room for improvement. It’s just the nature of the sport.
Coach Sean Cleary Is there a lot of talent in West Virginia? I think there is talent everywhere. Sometimes, there are a few more diamonds in the rough. When they come in and become these phenomenal athletes, that starts the association of them with talent. If you look back to their actual high school performances, if they were that talented, they would have been recruited by other schools. I wanted the best students we could possibly get. I wanted high numbers of West Virginia kids in our program. What type of relationships have you built with your runners and what is your level of trust with them? I think it has something to do with their character and their desires. No matter if it is Division I or Division II, a distance runner is a distance runner. They have desire, they have respect, and they have passion. My goal is to teach them to have more respect for themselves and their teammates. To teach them to not only look at things as an individual, but also to be accountable toward the team. We have those two things. I want to get my kids to a point where they are so self-motivated and they are so driven to do this on their own, that my biggest job is to hold them back. I don’t care if they’re doing summer internships in California or they’re living in Fairmont, or wherever they are. The vast majority of my job is to actually hold them back from training too hard. I think that is just the nurturing environment of this town. My assistant coaches, some of the pro athletes who have gone on and run, they care a great deal.
50 | West Virginia University
You’ve recently been named the President of the USTFCCCA. What is that like so far, and what are some of your responsibilities in that role? I was the vice president for the last two years and just became the president. I think it is important that the veteran coaches give back, because we’re shaping and scoping the future of the sport. But I think the biggest thing as coaches is we are mentors to these kids, we’re mentors to other coaches and we are put in positions where we can build relationships with high school coaches and other coaches where we should give back. I really believe it is a privilege to be the head coach at West Virginia and with that comes the responsibility that we hold this institution in a great light. We’re all busy and while it’s going to be time consuming, I feel it’s important. I have a perspective in cross country and distance running and I hope to help a lot of younger coaches. The bottom line with my belief system is that I believe that instinctively we are all procrastinators. We all put off sometimes. But I think that with these kids, if they’re going to work hard at something, I think our job is to get them to work a little bit harder and really get rewarded. Whether that is in athletics or academically, or just making the right decisions in life, it’s okay to go for something. And that’s what we’re trying to teach them.

2012 Review

A Look Back at 2012 Big 12 Welcome Riding its fourth top-10 finish in the last five years, the West Virginia University cross country team entered one of the best conferences in the nation, the Big 12 Conference, on July 1, 2012. The Big 12 has seen huge national success in the sport of cross country with the conference producing three national champions, four runner-ups and four individual titles. The conference has sent at least three teams to the NCAA Championships every year, with a record-breaking eight attending the championships in 1998. The conference emphasizes the cornerstone of coach Sean Cleary’s program – competing and winning at the highest level. Brault Goes 4-for-4 Senior Sarah-Anne Brault returned for her final season as a Mountaineer and finished by going to the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in her career. Brault, who was the first alternate for Canada in the triathlon for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, sat out the first part of the season and only saw action in the championship portion. Brault ran her first race at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas and came in 10th. The Winnipeg,
Ontario native received All-Big 12 honors and finished her career with two all-conference honors. Brault continued her success at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals where she finished a career-high seventh with a season-best 6k time of 20:35. Brault garnered All-Region honors for the third year in a row on her way to the NCAA Championships where she placed 76th. Mid-Atlantic Honorees Along with Brault’s recognition, freshmen Sydney Scott and Kelly Williams also received the distinction of All-Region. Williams was the first of the two across the line in 22nd place, while Scott followed closely behind in 24th. Both ended their first seasons as Mountaineers with season-best times on the course at Penn State. Williams finished the 6k race in 21:20, while Scott posted a time of 21:21. Senior Leadership Seniors Jordan Hamric and Aubrey Moskal were depended on greatly for the Mountaineers in 2012. Moskal ran in every race for WVU, while Hamric only sat out one. The duo of Hamric and Moskal opened the season by finishing second and third, respectively, at the WVU Alumni 54 | West Virginia University
Open. Hamric’s next three races saw the Bruceton Mills, W.Va., native finishing in the top 25 and posting personal best times. Hamric wrapped up her season with a 65th-place finish in at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Moskal’s dedication was seen from start to finish as she consistently was a top five runner for the Mountaineers. Moskal did not miss a race for WVU and saw her highest finish at the Greater Louisville Classic, where the Morgantown, W.Va., native placed 13th with a personal-best 5k time of 18:14.88. The Freshman Duo In only their first seasons as Mountaineers, Kelly Williams and Sydney Scott were counted upon greatly by WVU in 2012. Williams’ consistent improvement proved beneficial for WVU as she moved from being the pack runner to a leader in a matter of weeks. Williams’ hard work was seen in the final two meets, where she was the second WVU runner across the finish line in each performance, and gained valuable points for the Mountaineers. Scott started the season with a bang by winning the WVU Alumni Open with partner Jordan Hamric.

Hard Work in the Classroom Known for one of the highest GPAs on campus, the cross country team continued their tradition of academic success when nine members of the team were named to the Academic AllBig 12 Cross Country First and Second Teams. Kaitlyn Gillespie and Kelly Williams were two of 13 studentathletes who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. Jordan Hamric, Sarah Martinelli, Aubrey Moskal and Hallie Portner joined them on the first team, while Stephanie Aldea and Chelsea Jarvis were on the second team. Williams and Sarah-Anne Brault would rack up more academic awards at the end of season when the two were named USTFCCCA Division I Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Honorees.

Charity Wachera 1998 Charity Wachera was one of WVU’s best distance runners during her career. The Nairobi, Kenya, native earned All-America honors in the 10,000-meter with a sixth-place finish (34:29.64) at the 1998 NCAA outdoor championship. She also set two school records during her tenure. She ran a 16:27.27 in the 5,000-meter and a 34:24.00 in the 10,000 meter during the 1998 outdoor track season. Her mark in the 10,000-meter still stands today, while her mark in the 5,000-meter was broken by fellow All-American Rebecca Stallwood in 2001. In 1997, Wachera finished 11th with a time of 17:00 to become WVU’s first female cross country All-American.
.......................................................................................... .......................................................................................... Megan Metcalfe 2002, 2004 Megan Metcalfe, a nine-time All-American, is the most prolific distance runner in Mountaineer women’s track & field history and the first Mountaineer to achieve two All-America honors in cross country. The Edmonton, Alberta, native earned her first All-America accolade as a member of the 2001 distance medley relay team, which finished in eighth place. Metcalfe’s second All-America award, and first individual, came with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter race at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships in a WVU record time of 9:09.95. An outstanding cross country runner, Metcalfe was named the 2000 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Her third All-America honor came with a ninthplace finish at the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships, making her just the second female cross country All-American in school history and only the fourth Mountaineer to earn All-America honors in two sports. Metcalfe earned her fourth and fifth All-America accolades in 2003 by finishing fourth in the 3,000-meter at the indoor championships and was a part of the school record setting distance medley relay team in that same meet. Her sixth and seventh awards came in March, 2004, when she was fifth in the 3,000-meter and again was a member of the DMR team. Metcalfe’s eighth and school-record setting All-America honor came at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships where she recorded a 16th place overall finish. Metcalfe capped off her brilliant career with a ninth All-America honor and a national championship when she won the 5,000-meter at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Metcalfe also competed at the World Cross Country Championships twice during her tenure at WVU and competed at the World University Games in Turkey. In 2008, Metcalfe reached the top, as she ran in the 5,000-meter race for Canada in the Beijing Olympics. 63

Marie-Louise Asselin 2007, 2008, 2009 Marie-Louise Asselin capped off her cross country career as one of the most decorated runners in WVU history. At the end of her career, the Sarnia, Ontario, native owned seven All-America medals, including three in cross county and four in track. Asselin’s final cross country season, 2009, was one for the record books as she became one of only two WVU runners to earn three All-America honors in the sport. Along with teammate Keri Bland, Asselin achieved the honor as she finished in 31st place (20:43) at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Mountaineers went on to finish sixth, marking the third consecutive year that WVU finished in the top 10 at the national championships. Asselin also earned all-region honors for the fourth time in her career and all Big East honors for the third time. Her success continued into the track season as she posted a second-place finish in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA Indoor Championships (15:50.53) and a second-place finish in the 5,000 meter at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (15:53.93). In 2008, Asselin led WVU to its most successful season in school history, as the Mountaineers took a historic fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championship, first at the NCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Regionals and second at the Big East Championship. She became the first Big East Women’s Cross Country Individual Champion in 2008, as she took the top spot with a time of 20:10. Asselin then placed 17th at the NCAA Championship race with a time of 20:27 to earn her second consecutive All-American honor. Asselin earned her first All-American title in 2007 as the Mountaineers captured their first Big East Championship and finished ninth in the country. Even though she was just a sophomore at the time, Asselin became WVU’s third AllAmerican in the sport when she finished 17th (14th in the team standings) with a time of 20:39 at the 2007 NCAA Championship. It was a fitting ending to an outstanding season that saw her post the team’s highest finish in the final five meets. Asselin showed glimpses of her abilities just weeks earlier at the Big East Championship, where she took second, and at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional race where she placed third, leading her team to an overall second-place finish. Asselin, an All-Big East and all-Mid-Atlantic region selection, was joined by Bland as an All-American, marking the first time in program history that two teammates earned the honor in the same season. In the 2008 indoor season, Asselin went on to place seventh in the 3,000-meter to earn All-America honors and was on the All-America distance medley relay team that took fourth at nationals.

Keri Bland 2007, 2008, 2009 Keri Bland, a seven-time All-American, left her name in the WVU record books as she aided the Mountaineers to a sixth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships, marking the third-straight year WVU finished in the nation’s top 10. Bland, along with teammate Marie-Louise Asselin, became the only Mountaineers in school history to earn All-America honors for three seasons in cross county, as she finished 34th (20:45). The Fairview, W.Va., native earned two AllAmerica honors in the 2009 indoor track season, as she placed eighth in the mile and was a part of the distance medley relay team. Bland continued to dominate in the outdoor season, as she earned her fourth honor of the year by virtue of finishing as one of the top U.S. citizens in the 1,500-meter race, marking the second time she earned honors in all three seasons (cross county, indoor track and outdoor track). Bland was an essential part of the Mountaineers in 2008, when she led WVU to its most successful season in school history as the squad placed fourth at the NCAA Championship, first at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals and second at the Big East Championship. She was the first Mountaineer to finish at the NCAA Championship, where she finished 14th with a time of 20:20. In 2007, Bland and Asselin helped guide the Mountaineers to their first conference title and a ninth place finish at nationals. At nationals, Bland was the second Mountaineer to cross the line in 23rd at 20:58. Bland, along with Asselin, was named a first team All-American, marking the first time WVU’s cross country program had multiple All-Americans in the same year. Bland earned All-Big East and All-Mid-Atlantic region accolades during the season after finishing fourth and seventh, respectively, in those races. In the 2008 indoor track season, Bland was a part of the All-America distance medley team that set a school record and placed fourth in the country. She finished the 2008 outdoor season by earning All-America honors in the 1,500-meter to become the first female in WVU history to earn All-America honors in three sports in the same year.
.......................................................................................... .......................................................................................... Clara Grandt 2009 Clara Grandt saved the best for last as she posted the finest season of her career and earned her first All-America honor in cross country in 2009. The West Union, W.Va., native led the team to a sixth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championship, and she was the first Mountaineer to cross the line in 13th place overall. Grandt earned all-region and All-Big East honors and was named Big East Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sept. 24 for her efforts in the Midwest Open. There she crossed the line in 17:00.1, 19 seconds before Louisville’s Tarah McKay (17:19.4), for the fastest course time in over 20 years. In the track season, Grandt earned her second honor of the year by virtue of finishing as one of the top U.S. citizens in the 5,000-meter race at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. She then capped off her final season as a Mountaineer with a fourth-place showing in the 10,000-meter race at the outdoor championships, giving her four total All-America honors. Grandt became WVU’s 24th track and field All-American as she earned the honors with a fourth-place showing in the 10,000-meter finals at the NCAA Championship in 2009. Grandt started off the race behind the lead pack before finding her stride around the 6,000-meter mark. The junior closed the gap and finished with a time of 33:45.16. 65

Kaitlyn Gillespie 2010, 2011 The Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, native continued to shine in her second year as a Mountaineer by earning all-conference, all-region and All-America honors for the second time of her career. As a junior in 2011, she placed seventh at the Big East Championship in 20:14 and followed it with a seventh-place mark in 21:46 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. To earn All-America, she came in 27th place at the NCAA Championships with a 6k time of 20:17, improving in placement and time from her 2010 NCAA finish. She was also named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team following the 2011 season. After one year at Cedarville University, Gillespie quickly made a successful jump to Division I competition in 2010 by earning All-America, all-region and all-conference accolades in her first season at WVU. She became an All-American for the first time following her 34th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, where she finished the 6k course in 20:46. To earn All-Mid-Atlantic region and All-Big East honors, Gillespie came in 10th place at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional and the Big East Championships, widely regarded as the most difficult regional and conference events in the nation. Before a 17th-place finish at the 2010 Penn State National, she had two first-place finishes at the Big East Preview and Notre Dame Invitational.
.......................................................................................... ..........................................................................................
