West Virginia University is on probation until February 17, 2017, for violations involving impermissible telephone and text communications that occurred in a number of our athletics programs. Level II violations occurred in the following sports programs: women’s gymnastics, football, women’s basketball and women’s soccer. On a smaller scale, 10 other sport programs, including baseball, men’s basketball, women’s diving, women’s rowing, men’s soccer, men’s swimming, women’s tennis, women’s track and field, women’s volleyball, and men’s wrestling and programs, also engaged in impermissible text and telephone-related activity. MAKING GOOD ON A PROMISE PUT IN PLACE UPON HIS HIRING, JON HAMMOND, A NATIVE OF ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, HAS RETURNED THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY RIFLE TEAM TO NATIONAL GLORY, IMPLEMENTING A STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS THAT HAS SEEN FOUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SEVEN SEASONS, FIVE INDIVIDUAL NCAA TITLES, SIX CONSECUTIVE GREAT AMERICAN RIFLE CONFERENCE (GARC) CHAMPIONSHIPS, TWO UNDEFEATED SEASONS, 92 ALL-AMERICA HONORS AND 10 CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITIONS. The 2014-15 Season The Mountaineers extended their NCAA title streak to three straight with a comeback victory at the 2015 NCAA Championships, scoring 4702 and winning their nation-best 17th title inside Alaska-Fairbanks’ Patty Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. WVU became the first team to win three straight titles since UAF did so from 2006-08. Down 12 points entering the final day of competition, having shot 2319 in smallbore, WVU overcame the deficit with a 2383 air rifle score, the second-best mark in NCAA and program history. Three Mountaineers finished on the air rifle podium, including NCAA Champion Maren Predgier, WVU’s 17th individual national champion. Michael Bamsey placed second, and Garrett Spurgeon finished third. WVU won its sixth straight GARC title with a 4709 showing at the conference championships. Spurgeon finished first in air rifle, while Ziva Dvorsak was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Elizabeth Gratz was named the GARC Rookie of the Year. The Mountaineers finished the year with 23 All-America honors and 28 All-GARC awards. Hammond was named the Rifle Winter 2015 CaptainU Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Again, success in the classroom also was achieved, as Thomas Kyanko was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Second Team, his third career honor, and Prediger landed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Second Team. WVU has now had at least one honoree in each of the last six seasons.
2012-14 Seasons Despite the graduation of three-time NCAA Champion Petra Zublasing, the Mountaineers did not skip a beat in 2013-14, as Hammond led the Mountaineers to their second straight National Championship and a perfect 10-0 record.
HEAD COACH
JonHammond 10th Season

Ranked No. 1 for the majority of the season, there was little doubt WVU would successfully defend its national title, as the team owned a 17-shot lead after the first day of competition, winning its first smallbore title under Hammond with a 2338 score. The Mountaineers secured the NCAA title with a first place, 2367 air rifle score, giving them a twoday total of 4705, an NCAA Championships’ record. Three Mountaineers shot in each discipline final, with Maren Prediger and Garrett Spurgeon finishing second in air rifle and smallbore, respectively.
Prior to the team’s national title victory, the squad scored its fifth straight GARC championship, shooting 4700. Prediger won the GARC air rifle title, and the Mountaineers claimed 14 All-GARC honors. WVU collected 14 All-America honors, and Hammond was named the Rifle Winter 2014 CaptainU Coach of the Year. Kyanko also was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Second Team. Hammond rallied his 2012-13 squad around 2012 Olympian Zublasing and a core of young, talented shooters. The Mountaineers navigated a difficult schedule and earned the program’s second National Championship in five years. Ranked No. 1 nationally throughout the duration of the season, the Mountaineers overcame a one-shot smallbore deficit and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships en route to winning the air rifle team title and bringing the National Championship trophy back to Morgantown for a nation-best 15th time. Zublasing was instrumental in securing WVU’s victory, as she swept the individual titles and earned the tag as the CRCA Shooter of the Match. She became the first shooter to win both NCAA titles at one championship since 2001, and the second WVU student-athlete to win three career national titles in any sport. Hammond was named the CRCA Coach of the Year, his second career honor. WVU scored 12 NRA All-America honors, including seven combined first-team accolades. WVU also won its fourth straight GARC title. Zublasing was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year, and Spurgeon earned the GARC Rookie of the Year honor. Prior to their postseason victories, WVU established two NCAA records, shooting a winning 4720 score over Ole Miss at the WVU Rifle Range on Nov. 9 and tallying a 2381 air rifle score at NCAA Qualifiers, in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 17. The team also shot a school-record 2348 smallbore score at Army on Oct. 7 and against Memphis, in Morgantown, on Oct. 16. Additionally, Zublasing shot school records in smallbore (595) and aggregate score (1193). The season ended with Zublasing (second team) and Kyanko (third team) earning Academic All-America awards.
2009-12 Seasons Tasked with maintaining the Mountaineers’ level of success with a young team recovering from the loss of seven seniors, Hammond rose to the challenge in 2011-12. Nationally ranked in the top three all year, WVU bounced back from a regular-season loss to Kentucky to grab its third straight GARC title. The Mountaineers, winners of the GARC Sportsmanship Award, also won the air rifle title and were paced by Zublasing, the discipline champion and GARC Shooter of the Year. Additionally, Kyanko was named the GARC Rookie of the Year, and the squad earned 12 AllGARC honors. The team, boasting a 12-2 record, including a 5-1 mark in conference action, advanced to the NCAA Championships for the sixth straight season and placed sixth. Zublasing won the air rifle title, becoming the second Mountaineer to win the discipline title in as many years. As a team, WVU finished second in air rifle and eighth in smallbore. Following the national championships, six Mountaineers earned eight NRA All-America honors, including first team air rifle and smallbore marks for Zublasing, while Hammond was named the NRA Distinguished College Coach for the second time. Zublasing also earned a spot on the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Second Team. Leading a team that boasted seven seniors, five of whom comprised his first Mountaineer recruiting class, the 2010-11 season was another championship year for Hammond. Though narrowly edged by GARC rival Kentucky at the 2011 NCAA Rifle Championships, the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout the season, won the air rifle team title and finished second overall in smallbore. Additionally, Nicco Campriani won the NCAA air rifle title, the first WVU shooter to earn a national championship since 1997. Campriani also finished second in the smallbore competition. All told, the Mountaineers earned a combined five top-five air rifle and smallbore finishes, and six shooters scored eight NRA All-America honors. Posting an 11-2 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark, the Mountaineers suc-
cessfully defended their GARC title and also swept the air rifle and smallbore titles. WVU was the first conference team to repeat as champions since Nebraska (2006, ’07). Campriani, the individual air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion, was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Following the season, Campriani and classmate Andy Lamson were named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large First and Second Teams, respectively. Campriani was the third Mountaineer in program history to receive the first-team honor. Hammond coached a talented, upperclass-laden squad to an 11-0 record in 2010, the team’s first undefeated season since 2001, and a GARC regular-season title. The Mountaineers followed their unblemished regular season with a win at the GARC Championships and a sweep of the discipline titles. The victory was the program’s fourth overall and first since 2000. At his first GARC Championships, transfer Campriani won the smallbore, air rifle and combined score titles, and the Mountaineers earned 18 All-GARC honors, including eight first-team awards. Hammond was named the GARC Coach of the Year, his second distinction in three seasons. WVU concluded the 2010 campaign with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships; the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation for the majority of the season, finished third in smallbore and fifth in air rifle. WVU placed two in the smallbore finals, and following the championships, seven student-athletes earned 12 All-America honors.
The Early Years Hammond made a name for himself in the coaching ranks in 2009, as he took a young, rising WVU squad to the NCAA Championships and returned with the program’s 14th trophy. A season that was built on momentum, WVU went 11-1 overall, earned its first No. 1 CRCA ranking in over a decade, had seven student-athletes earn NRA All-America honors, improved its GARC standing and finished second at the league championship, captured the nation’s air rifle championship and won the aforementioned NCAA title. The Mountaineers’ 2009 national-title run was especially noteworthy given the pressure the team overcame. After a poor smallbore showing on the championships’ first day, WVU found itself in sixth place. Hammond’s team regrouped and put forth a strong air rifle showing, with all four competitors finishing in the top 10. Additionally, Hammond’s squad was strong at the 2009 GARC Championships, as Tommy Santelli finished first overall, second in air rifle and fifth in smallbore. In total, WVU had seven top-10 finishes between the two disciplines. For his efforts all season, Hammond earned his first CRCA Coach of the Year honor. In only his second year as head coach, Hammond led the 2007-08 rifle squad to an 8-3 record, a third-place finish at the GARC Championships and a sixth-place standing at the NCAA Championships, the Mountaineers’ first appearance in six seasons. Hammond guided five Mountaineers to NRA smallbore All-America honors that season and also earned individual recognition, as he was named the GARC Coach of the Year and listed as the 2008 NRA Distinguished College Coach. Hammond took over the Mountaineer rifle program upon the retirement of long-time coach Marsha Beasley in 2006. That season, he guided the 2006-07 team to its first winning record (6-4) since 2003.
Academic Achievements A strong proponent for achievement at the range and in the classroom, Hammond’s shooters have proven to be well-rounded student-athletes. Since his arrival in the fall of 2006, 50 Mountaineers have earned a spot on the annual CRCA All-Academic Honor List, including a program-best eight student-athletes in 2015. The Mountaineers also have been well represented on the annual CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Teams, with at least one student-athlete earning an honor in each of the last six straight seasons.

The WVU rifle team received its 2015 NCAA Champion rings from WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons in the fall of 2015.
Kyanko earned his third career honor in 2015, as he was named to the Men’s AtLarge Second Team; he also scored a spot on the second team in 2014 and the third team in 2013. Prediger earned her first career honor in 2015 and was named to the Women’s At-Large Second Team. Campriani became the program’s third first-team selection in 2011, as he was one of 15 student-athletes named to the top team.
Player Development Responsible for restoring the glory and tradition to the storied WVU rifle program, Hammond has recruited not only elite athletes to compete in the Old Gold and Blue, but he also has continued to teach and foster his team’s talents so each student-athlete is a stronger competitor upon graduation. Athletic accolades and recognitions go hand-in-hand with such advancements. The Mountaineers have earned a combined 92 All-America honors, including 40 firstteam recognitions, since Hammond became head coach. The 2015 National Champion team earned 23 All-America honors, a program-high under Hammond. Following a four-year drought, five Mountaineers scored five All-America honors in 2008, including first-team recognition for Lafe Kunkel and Brandi Eskew. Hammond’s leadership also propels the Mountaineers toward fruitful futures. Four Mountaineers competed at the 2014 ISSF World Championships, including a USA Junior Team invite for Spurgeon. Campriani and Zublasing earned spots on the Italian National Team for the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and Campriani won Gold in the men’s 50m 3 positions and Silver in the men’s 10m air rifle. He also finished eighth in the men’s 50m rifle prone. Additionally, Bryant Wallizer was invited to train at the US Olympic Training Center immediately following his 2010 graduation.
Athletic Achievements In addition to his busy coaching schedule, Hammond still competes for the Great Britain National Team. Hammond started shooting when he was nine years old. As
a junior, Hammond won both domestic and international honors, highlighted by the World Junior Champion 50m rifle prone title in Barcelona in 1998. Hammond has competed in a wealth of senior international competitions since then, including the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics representing Great Britain. He also has competed in numerous ISSF World Cups throughout the world as well as the last two ISSF World Championships in 2010 and 2014. One of his highlights was representing Scotland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, where he became the most successful Scottish Athlete in a single Commonwealth Games, winning four medals – two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Hammond continues to shoot on the ISSF World Cup circuit on an annual basis.
Prior to Coaching at WVU Hammond earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Leeds while competing for its rifle team. Hammond then journeyed to West Virginia to spend the 2002-03 season competing for the WVU rifle team while working toward his master’s degree in sport management. Hammond returned to Morgantown in 2006 and began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with the Mountaineers. In addition to his highly successful career as a shooter, Hammond also has volunteered his time to help others. While a member of the Leeds squad, he helped coach beginning shooters and assisted the team with organizational tasks. Hammond also helped initiate Blind Shooting in Scotland with his father. He worked closely with a group from the Grampian Society for the Blind to teach basic rifle techniques. He gave the shooters positional and mental advice and undertook the task of raising funds for all of the equipment, as well as organizing a venue to hold the club’s matches. Hammond is married to the former Lindsay Brooke. They have one son, Lewis.

the season. Ultimately, we can’t control how our competitors compete, so we just need to focus on our training and what we can control.
How do you channel the studentathletes’ focus on to what is happening at WVU and not worry about qualifying for the 2016 Olympics? I’ve always liked having student-athletes that do have big goals and aspirations. They can use that as extra motivation, and I think we can frame a lot of what we do at WVU as a stepping stone for them in their overall journeys. We have to be careful that we are not just focused on WVU, but equally I don’t want them to focus on just Olympics and Olympic Trials. It is OK to have a broad-range of interests and motivations. It’s up to the coaches to determine how they use those motivators without getting too focused or too bogged down on just one thing. Studies are always going to be important, too. We have a lot of self-motivated student-athletes, and they want to get good grades. Athletes are naturally competitive, and that rounds into being competitive in the classroom, too. It’s not hard for me to make sure these student-athletes are focused in the classroom.
ONE-ON-ONE COACH HAMMOND with
The Mountaineers are the three-time defending NCAA Champions. Is the ultimate goal for the 2015-16 season to defend those titles?
No. To win an NCAA Championship is an achievement every team would like, and it’s something we would like, too, but it’s a want, not a goal. We want to make sure our goals are very controllable and something we can manage. Winning championships is hard and something you can’t control when competing against other teams.

I think our ultimate goals this year are to be the best team we can possibly be and to continue to improve. Those goals are team and individually based. Each team member needs to work as hard as he/she can and make themselves better in the classroom, in the range and in life. If they can do that, that will translate into this team being the best it can be. At the end of the year, we hope our best will be enough to win a National Championship. That would be a great way to end
We have an excellent support system for the student-athletes. There are a lot of resources available in our student-development office, and (assistant director, student-athlete development) Jennifer (Mandeville) is a great asset, too, helping the students monitor their grades. The whole staff takes an interest in making sure our student-athletes succeed in all areas.
What type of leadership are you expecting out of this year’s senior class? This is a strong senior class. It’s just as diverse as last year’s class, with two international shooters and two U.S. shooters. The whole class will play a massive role in leading this team this year. They have a ton of experience. They are another year older and wiser, and we’ll be leaning on them, similar to last year. Senior Meelis Kiisk will be a team captain, as will junior Jean-Pierre Lucas, but all our seniors will be expected to lead. They each have distinct, different personalities, and I think those differences will be the base for a broad, encompassing leadership from this class.
What sort of environment is provided to the student-athletes that allows them to develop and progress athletically during their Mountaineer careers? We provide an arena that allows the student-athlete to work hard, and often that hard work will produce results. There’s a high standard here at WVU. There are a lot of exceptional shooters that have competed here, and there are a lot of exceptional shooters on the team now, too. Our shooters push each other to get better each day. Ultimately, each athlete has to put the effort in and get quality training. Motivation and the hunger to get better will take them far. One of my big goals as a coach is to provide the right environment for each of our student-athletes to succeed. They have everything they need to train – the resources, the support staff and the facilities.
Will Anti and Ginny Thrasher, the lone newcomers this season, have already attained a lot of individual success. How do you see them fitting in with this team? I’m excited for those two. I think they both have a lot of potential. They have slightly different backgrounds, but they’re both as hungry and driven as any other student-athlete, and I think that’s what I like about them. I think they’re both going to be very coachable and fit in with the group well. They’re full of enthusiasm and are motivated to get started.
In addition to consistently shooting the nation’s top score each week, the Mountaineers also tallied a nation-best air rifle score of 2386 last season. What is more important to you and the team – consistent, high scores or setting new records?
see us relying on just one or two shooters this year – it’s going to be more of a team effort, and I think that’s going to be good for us.
There’s only so many times you can break a record, so I think it’s more important for the team to shoot consistently at each match. I want to see each of them develop individually and improve every year. The team will always be different each year – there will always be a slightly different team feel and atmosphere.
The Mountaineers have won three straight NCAA Championships, four since you took over in 2006, and 17 overall. Do you see interest in the team and the sport growing locally and on the WVU campus?
Most important to me is for the team to achieve the highest level of success it’s capable of. We need to show improvement throughout the year and finish strong during the championship season. If the odd record happens to get broken along the way, that’s great, but it’s going to get harder and harder every year. Last year’s air rifle record – that may stand for a long time. Having said that, we have a lot of depth this year, so we’ll see. It’s not something we’ll focus on, but I think we have the talent and the depth for things like that to happen, especially if everyone shoots his or her best on one day. It is hard to replace the air rifle shooters we lost, like Maren (Prediger) and Ziva (Dvorsak). I don’t
Yes, I think so. I think the recognition of the team has come up more. I think it was always there to some degree because of the team’s tradition, but every year there’s a new class of students that arrives at WVU and in town, and they may not have the same appreciation for our success and tradition as the faculty and Morgantown residents do. I think having the level of success we’ve had over the last three years has really helped us reach more WVU students. I also think the local support has been great, and the sport seems to be growing in town, especially at the junior level. How much of an impact the team has played in that, it’s hard to say, but it’s not a bad thing to think that the success of our team helps the sport in general locally.
I think they’re both going to give their teammates competition right away, and that’s great. They’re going to be in a great environment where they’re going to be pushed right away. They were two of the top recruits in the country. I’m excited to start working with them. I see them both improving a lot this year.

Preseason Notebook.................................. 46 2015-16 Schedule...................................... 47 WVU Quick Facts....................................... 48
Legacy never ends. Legacy evolves. Legacy builds on past experiences. Legacy is fueled by fresh talent.
The 2015-16 Mountaineers
2015-16 SEASONPreview Legacy.
Deep into a three-year run of National Championships titles, adding to a stuffed trophy case that is home to a nation-best 17 NCAA awards, “legacy” is the most-accurate term to use when describing the West Virginia University rifle team. The preseason-ranked No. 1 Mountaineers enter the 2015-16 season with a wealth of returning talent, led by four seniors – Michael Bamsey, Meelis Kiisk, Garrett Spurgeon and Patrick Sunderman – who own a combined 23 All-America honors. Also returning are junior Jean-Pierre Lucas and sophomore Elizabeth Gratz. Though WVU will be without four highly decorated graduates, including 2015 NCAA air rifle champion Maren Prediger and 2015 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Senior and Shooter of the Year Ziva Dvorsak, two newcomers – Will Anti and Ginny Thrasher – will add immediate talent and depth that should help the Mountaineers continue their winning ways. “This year’s team has a huge amount of potential and talent,” said 10thyear Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “I don’t think there’s anything drastically different this year. We’re still developing a team atmosphere and laying a foundation for the rest of the season. I think this team is ready to start the new year with a fresh outlook.”
4-Peat The three-time reigning NCAA Champion West Virginia University rifle team has a chance to accomplish a special feat in 2015-16 – win its fourth straight national title. Only two programs have won four or more straight titles since 1980. WVU previously put together title runs of six straight (1988-93) and four straight
46
(1995-98). Alaska-Fairbanks won six straight national championships from 1999-2004. The Mountaineers went 11-1 last season and collected three titles: the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) regular-season and championship titles, as well as the NCAA title. WVU is the NCAA’s most decorated program, having won 17 titles, including four under 10-year coach Jon Hammond. The Nanooks rank second with 10 national championships.
A Decade of Success The 2015-16 season is coach Hammond’s 10th year with the Mountaineers. A proud Alum and member of the 2002-03 Mountaineer team, Hammond, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, has led WVU to four NCAA titles, including the last three straight. WVU also has won six straight GARC titles under Hammond, as well as 92 National Rifle Association (NRA) All-America honors and 10 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards.
Senior Leadership The Mountaineers will be led by four seniors this season – Michael Bamsey, Meelis Kiisk, Garrett Spurgeon and Patrick Sunderman. All but Bamsey have been with the squad for its last three NCAA Championships. Spurgeon, a native of Canton, Missouri, is an eight-time All-American. He and Bamsey, a native of Cardiff, Wales, finished on the air rifle podium alongside national champion Maren Prediger at the 2015 NCAA Championships, with Bamsey placing second and Spurgeon finishing third. Combined, the quartet owns 23 career All-America honors.
Follow the Captains Senior Meelis Kiisk and junior Jean-Pierre Lucas were selected as team captains for the 2015-16 season. Kiisk, a native of Paide, Estonia, returns to competition following a redshirt season last year. A six-time All-American, he shot at the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Championships. Lucas, a native of Speers, Pennsylvania, earned his first All-America honors last season, including NRA First Team Smallbore accolades. After joining the team in 2013, he has developed into one of the squad’s most consistent shooters in both guns.
Fresh Faces WVU welcomes two to the team this season, as freshmen Will Anti and Ginny Thrasher join the Mountaineers. Anti is a Mountaineer legacy, as his father, Mike, was an eight-time rifle All-American and a member of the WVU Sports Hall of Fame. Co-captain of the National Training Center Junior Shooting Club, located at the USA Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Anti finished sixth in the junior men’s 10m air rifle at the 2014 USA Shooting National Championships. He also placed sixth in the junior men’s 50m 3P and was the high J2 finisher. Thrasher previously shot for West Springfield High and the Acorns Optimist Rifle Club. She finished sixth in the women’s 50m smallbore at the 2015 Spring World Cup Selection, qualifying for the MQS match at the ISSF Munich World Cup, where she shot 412.0 in the women’s 10m air rifle and 575 in the women’s rifle 3 positions. Most recently, Thrasher earned five medals, two in open categories and three in junior competitions, at the 2015 USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle/Pistol, securing U.S. National Team status.

A Look at the 2015-16 Slate The Mountaineers’ 2015-16 schedule is highlighted by four late-season matches at the WVU Rifle Range, including a shoulder-to-shoulder match against GARC rival Kentucky on Feb. 6. In total, WVU will face five the nation’s top-eight teams from last season, including national championship runner-up Alaska-Fairbanks on Jan. 12 in Morgantown. The Mountaineers open their season with five matches away from Morgantown. WVU will open its home season against Army on Nov. 14. WVU will play host to VMI in an NCAA qualifying match on Feb. 20 before traveling to Oxford, Mississippi, for the 2016 GARC Championships, Feb. 27-28, at Mississippi’s Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. The Mountaineers will then shoot for their fourth straight NCAA title in Akron March 11-12. “The NCAA Championships will be held in our backyard this year, and we’re certainly looking forward to those logistical advantages,” Hammond said. “We’ve traveled to Akron several times over the last few years, and we’re familiar with the setting and the environment. Additionally, shooting at the Invitational in November will provide us with a unique preview of the competition environment we can expect at NCAAs. Hopefully, we’ll be able to take advantage of our opportunities.”

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the University’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1981, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Gee has served on several educationgovernance organizations and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents, the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education

Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. SHANELyons DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
West Virginia native Shane Lyons was named director of Intercollegiate Athletics and associate vice president at West Virginia University in January 2015. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction with Alabama athletic directors – the late Mal Moore and current athletic director Bill Battle. At WVU, Lyons has oversight of 18 varsity sports, a department budget of approximately $80 million, 220 employees, approximately 450 student-athletes and a facilities master plan that included the opening of a $21 million baseball park and more $75 million to modernize other athletic venues in the next three years. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, daily monitoring of compliance and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. He also was a member and served as chairman on many prominent committees within the NCAA Governance structure during his tenure with the ACC. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of the 25 membership service representatives. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships.
A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. He and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of WisconsinMadison, have two children: Cameron, 16, and Brooke, 12. Lyons is the University’s 12th athletic director.
