BIG 12 CONFERENCE The Big 12 Conference enters its 20th season as it continues to promote the strength and success of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of third-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 Conference, comprised of 10 members, remains the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. West Virginia and TCU joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. Whether on the field, in the classroom or in the community, student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Since beginning of competition in 1996-97, the Big 12 can boast 53 NCAA team titles and 552 individual National Championships. Looking forward, the Big 12 Conference, and its mark, will stand out in the classroom and in competition venues as the Big 12 continues to set itself apart as one of the top collegiate conferences in the nation. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Choosing to become a Mountaineer is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, folks across the state and throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. No school helps its student-athletes more than the people at WVU. Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news, media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. If you take advantage of these opportunities, it can have a positive effect, not only on your career as a studentathlete at West Virginia, but also on your life after you have donned the Old Gold and Blue.

IN THE COMMUNITY Representing West Virginia University, the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia in a charitable manner is important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers are constantly involved in community service activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the Children’s Hospital and the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which makes the team aware of any volunteer openings in the area. The WVU women’s team also hosts youth camps and clinics throughout the year in order to involve the community with the program. Becoming successful and positive role models on and off the court are important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers give back to Morgantown and its surrounding communities every chance they get.

The Ridgeview Racquet Club offers a place for the West Virginia University women’s tennis team to compete during inclement weather, and even holds practices and matches for the Mountaineers. Ridgeview features four indoor championship cushioned Deco Turf System courts, a climate-controlled environment with lighting at a competitive level for full sun protection from UV rays and spectator viewing areas to watch and enjoy the competitive play. These courts were used at the US Open and Tennis Masters Cincinnati. Ridgeview also offers five outdoor lighted Hartru clay courts. In addition, the spacious Club House offers fully privately men’s and women’s locker rooms, a luxurious lobby and Player’s Lounge on a big screen TV. STUDENT SERVICES The 2013-14 women’s tennis team was named to the ITA All-Academic Team, with three Mountaineers earning Scholar-Athlete awards. West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults. While many of the headlines center on the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, WVU athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in. A total of 363 student-athletes were recognized for their achievement in the classroom last spring, at the firstever Blue & Golden Globes Awards dinner, presented by the WVU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), honoring recipients of the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes

12

have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. WVU’s combined varsity athletic teams have an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 975. The graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive, to say the least, over the past three years. For the 2012-13 academic year, WVU had nine teams with perfect 1,000 scores: men’s basketball, women’s basketball, cross country, gymnastics, women’s soccer, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and rifle. Seven Mountaineer teams earned a perfect APR score in 2011-12, along with three teams receiving public recognition in the spring of 2010 by the NCAA for their latest multiyear APR. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the "voice of the student-athlete" on WVU's campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

The women’s tennis team maintained the top GPA of all 18 varsity sports this past spring with a 3.5435 GPA.

ONCE A MOUNTAINEER, ALWAYS A MOUNTAINEER Former West Virginia University women’s tennis player Jo Marie (Cinco) Bohn was inducted into the 24th annual WVU Sports Hall of Fame this year at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.

Charleston, West Virginia. “I also come from a small high school, Charleston Catholic High, so to receive the highest collegiate athletic award one can acquire is an amazing feeling.”

“It was so unexpected. As I look back on the previous inductees and their past collegiate accomplishments, I was completely shocked that I was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame,” Bohn said. A former standout for the women’s tennis team, Bohn put together a career record of 214-73 from 1988 to 1992 under former coach Martha Thorn. Bohn received her degree in sports management from WVU in 1992, and 22 years later she continues to remain at the top of the record book.

Although, the highlight of her college years were not the accolades she received year after year, but simply playing in the uniform of the Old Gold and Blue.

The 1989 Atlantic 10 Conference Freshman of the Year, Bohn finished her career as the 1992 Atlantic 10 Senior of the Year and remains the only player in WVU history to win more than 60 matches in one season and have two 30-win seasons in singles matches. Bohn also was honored with a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team in her final season as a Mountaineer. “This honor means a lot to me. I come from a small women’s sport at a large University,” said Bohn, a native of

“I enjoyed the team, traveling and even the band practicing as we practiced on the courts. It still gives me chills to hear ‘The Pride of West Virginia’ play at games today. I truly can say that I miss it all,” Bohn said.

Bohn resides in Charleston with husband, Pete Bohn, and their two children, Jada and Xavier. She is currently a tennis instructor at the local YMCA and at the Charleston Tennis Club. The 2014 class also included Michael Anti (rifle), Chris Enochs (baseball), George King (men’s basketball), Mike Krak (golf), Gene Lathey (football), Mike Logan (football) and Lester Rowe (men’s basketball). This class brings the number of total inductees to 156.

As the assistant coach for the women’s tennis team at the University of Charleston from 2012 to 2014, Bohn encouraged her players to live in the moment and to not take the game they love for granted. “As a college athlete you only get four years to play, so why not give it your all and leave with no regrets,” said Bohn. “Then hopefully down the road you can look back and be proud of your contribution to your University.”

2015 WEST VIRGINIA TENNIS

Head Coach

Miha Lisac Miha Lisac (MEE-ha LEE-sots) enters his second season as head coach at West Virginia University. A former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac previously spent six seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he built one of the top Division I programs in the nation. Lisac is a former student-athlete at Georgia State, and served as the men’s assistant coach for two years. In 2007, Lisac was named head coach of the women’s tennis team at his alma mater. While at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, back-to-back CAA Championship final appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record stands at 58-56 as head coach. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009, when he guided Georgia State to the first NCAA appearance in school history and was named CAA Coach of the Year.

36

At West Virginia

In his first season at WVU, Lisac led the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Atlantic Region entering the spring season. The WVU duo finished the fall season 5-8 and battled their way to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Regionals in Charlottesville, Virginia. Vivian Tsui tallied three straight wins at the USTA/ITA Regionals, and made it further in the main singles draw bracket than any other Mountaineer after having to survive the qualifying bracket. In the spring season, freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole led the team with a combined 24 wins in singles and doubles. Kaja Mrgole posted a team-best 13 wins in the spring for the 2013-14 season.

MOUNTAINEER TENNIS

At Georgia State

Lisac’s final season with Georgia State was a benchmark year for the program, as Abigail Tere-Apisah became the school’s first-ever tennis All-American after advancing to the 16th round at the NCAA Singles Championship. Tere-Apisah also took home CAA Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer honors. Whitney Byrd and Maryna Kozachenko became just the second pair in Lisac’s tenure to earn All-CAA First Team Doubles honors. The team advanced to its second straight CAA finals and earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history (No. 38 on Feb. 25, 2012). The team finished the season ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings for a third consecutive year after defeating three nationally ranked opponents. In 2010-11, the Panthers achieved a No. 55 ranking to finish the season, earning a spot at the national indoor tournament in the spring. The tournament takes the top 64 teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed an outstanding season, advancing to the CAA Championship final and earning a 15-4 overall record, including an 8-2 mark on the road. In Lisac’s third season, the team reached the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament for the third straight year while also producing two All-CAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first team singles, second team doubles) and Linda Hricistova (second team doubles). Nakic was named CAA CoPlayer of the Year after a season in which she went a perfect 17-0 in singles in dual match play, and she was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship. In 2009, Lisac presided over one of the most successful women’s tennis campaigns in Georgia State history as the Panthers captured their first conference title to reach the NCAA Championships for the first time ever. GSU posted an 11-5 record and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 47. For his efforts, Lisac was honored as CAA Coach of the Year. In his coaching debut in 2007-08, Lisac led the Panthers to an 11-9 dual match record and a berth in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. Three Panthers earned All-CAA honors; Dariana Kozmina, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova.

Academic Success

Last spring, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all WVU varsity sports with a 3.5435 GPA, including four players receiving Big 12 First Team All-Academic honors; Ikttesh Chahal, Hailey Barrett, Irinka Toidze and Vivian Tsui. The Mountaineers were also named to the ITA AllAcademic Team, with three individuals earning Scholar-Athlete awards; Oana Manole, Chahal, and Toidze. At GSU, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all GSU teams on several occasions, recording its highest GPA of 3.72 in the fall of 2007, including multiple Panthers named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award list. Podgorsek also was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team in 2008, while Nitkova was honored as the 2009 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis.

As an Assistant

From 2005-07, Lisac worked under Nick Brochu, former coach of the GSU men’s tennis squad, before transitioning to the men’s coaching position. In 2007, Lisac helped guide the men’s tennis team to its first league title as a member of the CAA and an NCAA berth. That year, Martin Steigwardt became the first Panther in history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship. The 2007 squad set the school record for dual match victories with a 19-5 mark, and ended the season ranked No. 36 in the country.

Personal

Lisac was born and raised in Velenje in the European nation of Slovenia, where he was ranked among the country’s Top-10 juniors. A 2005 graduate of Georgia State, Lisac lettered four years for the Panthers, and was a two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection and a four-time conference academic honoree.

Holzberg previously spent one season as the head coach at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York, where she led the Knights to an undefeated conference season and a Skyline Conference Championship. In her first season at WVU, Holzberg was a valuable asset to the success of WVU’s doubles pairings, leading the tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region entering the spring, and also four victories in doubles matches against Big 12 Conference opponents. Prior to her time at Mount Saint Mary College, Holzberg served as an assistant coach at Albany for two seasons. With Holzberg on staff, the Great Danes were two-time America East Conference consolation winners and received both a singles and doubles America East All-Conference selection. PREVIEW Preview..................................41 2014-15 Mountaineer Quick Facts....... 44

MOUNTAINEER TENNIS

Looking to build on last year’s accomplishments, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team enters this season more focused than ever. Under the direction of second-year coach Miha Lisac, the Mountaineers have their sights set on piecing the puzzle together. The 2009 Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac takes one day at a time in order to sustain a strong team atmosphere. With a majority of last year’s lineup back and the addition of three talented freshmen, Lisac has his team in position to ascend throughout the spring season as well as in the Big 12 Conference. “The results will be coming soon for our program. Our main focus is not only on winning or losing a match, but continuing to push forward and build on all aspects of the program,” Lisac said. “When we are prepared at a high enough level and mature enough to handle the pressures of playing against top competition in the Big 12, then our results will mirror the work that we have dedicated to the program in the offseason.” With one year under his belt at WVU, Lisac knows what kind of talent the women’s tennis program possesses, and where the team needs to grow in order to reach its goals. Although the Mountaineers look to rebound after last season’s 3-18 performance, Lisac is confident in the direction the team is heading. “My coaching philosophy is not changing in any way. We have been doing great work throughout the previous year and will continue to build the team on basics of tennis,” Lisac said. With only two upperclassmen on the roster, Lisac knows that his young team must lean on the leadership of the lone senior Ikttesh Chahal, a native of Chandigarh, India. “Ikttesh has been someone who has continued to improve since day one. She’s made great progress in her physical and mental approaches to the game,” Lisac said. “Ikttesh faced several opportunities last year where she positioned herself to be successful against solid competition. If she continues to stay dedicated and focused then she will set herself up to have a breakthrough year.”

A three-time Gold medal winner at the National School Games, Chahal went a combined 8-23 last season while competing primarily at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles with Hailey Barrett. In the fall, she finished flight “alpha” doubles at the USAFA Invitational in third with a record of 3-1. For her career, the fourth-year Mountaineer is 23-64 in singles play and 3056 in doubles action. A native of Lansing, Michigan, Barrett competed mostly at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles last season. “Hailey has done great work last year, and made strides in her game on the court. She has become the player who will help us continue to take steps forward and set an example for everyone this season,” Lisac said. “Hailey has also shown that she can compete against the top players in the conference, and I am looking forward to this year and taking her tennis game a step further.” For her career, the 2012 Michigan “Miss Tennis” is 21-36 in singles play and 19-30 in doubles action. Last spring, the duo of Barrett and Chahal went 4-5 as the top pairing throughout the year. With one year of experience in the Big 12 Conference, sophomore Kaja Mrgole is expected to play a major role this season as she competed primarily at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles last year. A native of Jesenice, Slovenia, Mrgole posted a No. 9 ranking in doubles play in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the ITA to start the 2014 spring season. “Kaja was a freshman last year, but showed great promise in her match play. Kaja is capable of doing very well against Big 12 opponents, and will continue to develop her game in order to be able to match up against top players,” Lisac said. As a freshman, she tallied a team-best 13 wins in the spring (24-39 overall), as well as three straight wins in doubles matches in the USA/ITA Atlantic Region, reaching the quarterfinals in the fall.

A native of Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, Lyn Yuen Choo played on Malaysia’s national 2011 and 2012 Fed Cup Team. Choo won the second leg of the 2012 National Tennis Circuit in singles and doubles play as well as crowned doubles champion at the 2014 BMW Malaysian National Tennis Circuit. “Just like other returners, Lyn Yuen brings a level of leadership to the team,” Lisac declared. “She has been with us since January and understands what our program is about, and she sets an example for the incoming freshmen in how to practice and prepare day in and day out.” The Mountaineer freshmen class accounts for most of the lineup spots this season and each freshmen is expected to contribute right away. Carolina Lewis, a native of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, was ranked the 20th-best high school senior in the Southeast and No. 67 in the nation. The four-star recruit from TennisRecruiting.net, was South Carolina’s No. 1 tennis recruit. A Wexford, Pennsylvania native, Yvon Martinez, placed second at the 2014 Oglebay Tournament. A three-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, competed in the No. 2 spot at Pine Richland High. A Cairo, Egypt native, Habiba Shaker, competed in several international tournaments, and marked a career-best junior ranking of No. 373 in the world in January 2014. The standout recruit, earned a silver medal in

42

singles play in the U-16 at the 2011 Arab Junior Tennis Championship as well as a silver medal in doubles play. “Carolina, Yvon, and Habiba will be great editions to the program in singles as well as doubles play. They bring talent, work ethic and personalities that will help us take the program farther,” Lisac said. With so many talented players, Lisac expects any individual he puts on the court to still compete at the highest level. “I like the makeup of the team, and I believe we have a fairly even lineup. We will need everyone to step up and contribute points from across the board,” Lisac explained. With the Big 12 being one of the top conferences in women’s college tennis, Lisac refuses to shy away from the challenge. “We have a lot of work to do to catch up with the other teams in the Big 12. We want to become a force within the conference, and be a great representative for the conference at national level tournaments,” Lisac said. If the Mountaineers can produce good results against those teams, he knows the Old Gold and Blue will climb into the rankings. Throughout this season, Lisac and his squad will continue to take their game to the next level in order to reach their goals.

OLIVER LUCK Director of Athletics A

WVU’s Directors of Athletics

s Director of Athletics at West Virginia University, Oliver Luck has worked endlessly and traveled the world to enhance the Mountaineers’ role as a major player in collegiate athletics. In four years on the job, Luck’s accomplishments have been nothing short of spectacular. In the past year alone, he successfully guided the start of construction on a new $21 million baseball park, which will open in 2015 and provide the Mountaineers with one of the best facilities in the Big 12. Add in his tireless efforts to secure a $75 million bond, start a $25 million fundraising effort and proceed with a $6 million new football team room and Luck’s efforts will show $106 million in facility improvements in the coming years to bring WVU’s aging facilities into the modern times. His work on the national level is equally impressive and equally valuable to West Virginia University. He was named in 2013 to a three-year term on the inaugural College Football Playoff committee, which will change the face of the college football national championship. He serves on the NFL Player Safety Advisory Committee, chairs the Big 12 Budget and Finance Committee, serves on the board of American Campus Community, Inc., and in May, 2014, was one of the featured speakers at the White House at the Healthy Kids and Safe Sports Concussion Summit through his work with the organization Practice Like Pros. Among athletic directors, Luck is also one of the most popular speakers on the national circuit. Countless seminars and conventions feature him on panels and discussion groups to tap into his knowledge of the corporate and collegiate world. Before 2014, his previous three years at WVU were equally impressive and busy. He has hired new coaches to bolster WVU’s level of success. He guided the completion of major capital projects such as the $25 million WVU basketball practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s soccer training complex. He led WVU into the Big 12 Conference, presided over the best fundraising year in school history (2012), implemented several safety and crowd enhancements at Mountaineer sporting events, increased overall department revenue, continued a master plan for facility upgrades and watched his football program gain its third BCS bowl victory. In 2013, Luck oversaw the reseating of the WVU Coliseum to further increase WVU’s fundraising efforts. He added an 18th varsity sport - men’s golf, which will tee it up in 2015 for the first time since 1982. He outsourced WVU’s media rights to secure a 12-year guaranteed annual revenue source of at least $6 million per year from IMG. However, through all his accomplishments in four years in Morgantown, it all has occurred while he has fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph in the classroom and on the field.

Luck, was appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics on June 9, 2010 and he was no stranger to success. In fact, Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. Luck’s journey to the big chair at WVU began in his native Cleveland, where in 1977 he was named the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year at St. Ignatius High. Luck chose WVU over Ivy League schools Harvard and Yale, embarking upon a career that saw him establish school records for touchdown passes and completions during his playing days, while also leading the Mountaineers to a 26-6 upset victory over Florida in the 1981 Peach Bowl. His best season came as a senior in 1981 when he completed 216 of 394 passes for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns. He passed for a career-high 360 yards in a 27-24 loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in the final regular-season game of his career. Luck ended his college career with 5,765 yards and 43 touchdown passes, both figures still ranking among the best in school history. Luck was a two-time team MVP in 1980 and 1981, and also received the Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU football student-athlete with the highest grade point average. The two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American was the recipient of Today’s Top Five, presented for scholastics by the NCAA and was selected by the National Football Foundation as one of its 10 scholar-athletes to make a keynote speech at its annual banquet in 1982. Selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers (44th overall pick), Luck spent four years with the Oilers from 1982-86. His most extended action came in 1983 when he started six games and finished the season completing 124-of-217 passes for 1,375 yards and eight touchdowns. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of

the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck secured the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. BBVA Compass Stadium was built and opened in 2012 adding to Luck’s legacy with the professional soccer team, and the overall Houston sports facility complexes. He returned to Houston in May, 2012 for the opening ceremony of the soccer stadium that he fought so hard for. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Beta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, a former All-American quarterback and twotime Heisman Trophy finalist at Stanford and No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts; Mary Ellen, a standout volleyball player and graduate of Stanford; Emily, a current student at Stanford and Addison, who attends Morgantown High.
