STERN COXSWAIN (pronounced cox-n): Steers the boat and is the on-the-water coach and strategist for the crew. Must weigh at least 100 lbs. The coxswain may sit in the stern or lie in the bow of the shell.

Rowing 101 The whole body is involved in moving the boat through the water. Although rowing tends to look like an upper body sport, the strength of the stroke comes from the legs.

The stroke is made up of four parts: Catch, Drive, Finish and Recovery. At the catch, the athlete drops the oar blade vertically into the water. At the beginning of the drive, all the work is done by the legs. As the upper body begins to uncoil, the arms begin their work, drawing the oar blades through the water. Continuing the drive, the rowers move their hands quickly into the body. During the finish, the oar handle is moved down, drawing the oar blade out of the water. At the same time, the rower “feathers” the oar – turning the oar handle – so that the

oar blade changes from a vertical position to a horizontal one. The oar remains out of the water as the rower begins recovery, moving the hands away from the body and past the knees. The body follows the hands and the sliding seat moves forward, until, knees bent, the rower is ready for the next catch. Race times can vary considerably depending upon the course and weather conditions. Tailwinds improves times, while headwinds and crosswinds hampers them. Eights and fours are the most common collegiate competitions, and both events are held at the NCAA Championships. The plus sign indicates a coxswain.

Used to drive the boat forward: rowers do not use paddles.

Number: Rower’s position in the boat that counts up from the bow. The person closest to the bow of the boat is the “bow,” followed by the 2, then 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and finally 8 or “stroke.”

A rower who is new to the sport, and is in it’s the first year of collegiate competition.

The collegiate rower who competes beyond the novice level.

Race: Head races are the traditional fall regatta, in which boats cross the starting line at full speed at roughly 15 second intervals. The course usually involves navigating three miles of river, around bends and under bridges.

■■ Regatta:

Regatta is the name of rowing events in which several crews compete.

■■ Racing

Categories: There are several different events at regattas. Typically, the Varsity 8+ event is the most elite, consisting of a team’s best eight rowers. A program’s overall speed is usually measured by how well its top 8+ finishes at a race.

■■ Shell:

A boat used in the rowing races. It seats nine people for an eight (eight rowers and a coxswain), and five people for a four (four rowers and a coxswain). It ranges in length from 45 feet for a four to 58 feet for an Eight.

The triangular shaped metal device that is bolted onto the side of the boat and holds the oars.

Room: Middle rowers in the boat. Generally the biggest and strongest rowers in the boat.

The end of the oar which pulls the boat through the water.

(cox): Person who steers the shell from a seat located in the stern of an 8+ or a lying position in the bow of a 4+. The cox is also the on-the-water coach for the crew.

■■ Coxswain

The rower who sits closest to the stern. The stroke sets the rhythm for the boat; others behind her must follow his/her cadence.

ROWING

When watching a team row, look for good timing. See if all the oars and bodies are moving together. Technique and synchronization are the keys to being successful. Not only does each member have to do their part, but the crew must work in sync. All strokes must be simultaneous; one rower can make the difference for the entire crew if they do not work together. The crew makes it look easy is most likely the crew doing the best job. Here’s what to watch for: fluid motion of rowers: all good rowers must have power to move the boat through the water, and must be in top physical condition.

rate: With each stroke, the crew is trying to make an excellent run (distance the shell goes in one stroke cycle). During the race, the number of strokes per minute will vary, from 42 to 50 at the start, 34 to 40 in the body and 38 to 42 at the finish.

Other things to watch for: ■■ In

case of a false start, or broken equipment within the first 100 meters, competitors are called back. A boat responsible for two false starts are disqualified.

■■ Boats

must stay in their lanes, though there is no penalty for crossing the buoys so long as this does not hinder other competitors and the boat crosses the finish line in the judge’s view.

■■ The

course is followed by an umpire in a motorboat, who judges whether the competitors are following the rules. The boat that crosses the finish line first wins the race.

A Royal Finish

Take five women who never rowed prior to college, give them an experienced coach and a boat, and this is the fairytale story of the West Virginia University rowing team. After a successful showing in the program’s debut season, the Varsity 4+ did something outstanding – qualify for rowing’s most prestigious event – the Henley Royal Regatta. When the four team of Tina Griffith, Rishi Kelley, Erin Nisbet, Noelle Dodge and coxswain Christine DeRienzo finished first at the Dad Vail Regatta, the nation’s largest collegiate race, the team was selected to represent the United States at the Henley. The Mountaineers were selected to attend the big race by the organizers of Dad Vail not only for their first-place finish, but also because they felt WVU had the best chance to win in England.

The team was excited to travel to England and represent the state of West Virginia and the U.S. at such a prestigious international regatta. In the town of Henley, rowing is the premier sport and is the center of the town’s attention. “The town of Henley was great,” said former associate head coach Tina Griffith. “You didn’t have to explain to everyone what rowing was, like you do here. It is just one big mass of rowers and people who hold it in high regard. It was definitely a different feel.” The regatta began in 1839 and has been held each year since, except during the World Wars. It started as an afternoon event, but is now held over the course of five days with more than 500 teams competing in 17 events. Because the Henley began before either the England Rowing Association or the International Rowing Federation were created, the Royal Regatta features a longer course and a different style of racing. The women’s course is one mile and 550 yards, which is slightly longer than the distance of a 2,000 meter course. The women only race one team at a time, with the winner advancing to the next round. “The race format is completely different here than it is in normal races,” Griffith said. “Here, you race in heats, like sprints in track, but there it was one-on-one, like a bracket. It was more personal, and you have to do a lot more racing. Each time it felt like there was more on the line, only one was surviving, not the top-three.” WVU’s four team started the competition strong, sailing through the first, second and third rounds, before eventually losing in the finals to Oxford Brookes University (England). Although, the team was eliminated, they broke the course record and made it further than any other team the Dad Vail committee had selected. “I was very grateful for the opportunity, and it was exciting, but it was mainly another opportunity to prove ourselves,” Griffith said. “To be honest, it really didn’t matter the competitor. We just wanted to race and win, and that is one big reason why I think we did so well.” Attending the Henley was a royal finish to the team’s Cinderella year and an experience they will never forget. The team not only made a mark in the program’s first season; they set the bar for future Mountaineers in seasons to come.

Mountaineers are constantly involved in community service activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Making Strides for Breast Cancer, the local Big Sister program, the Children’s Hospital and a recent bond with the local Girl Scouts was formed as well.

its sixth straight year, the team volunteered for Making Strides against Breast Cancer at the annual Breast Cancer Walk at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park. The team also held its second annual Girl Scout event, which taught young scouts the basics of rowing and the everyday life of a collegiate athlete.

the Mountaineers has helped make the community a better place by helping with roadside clean-up, improving local watersheds and volunteering at senior centers. They also aided the Haiti relief fund through the West Virginia Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which held a benefit after the country was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in January 2010.

West Virginia University Boathouse is located in Morgantown’s Wharf District along the Monongahela River – only a two-minute walk from the WVU Visitors Center.

■■ Constructed

in 2007 below the Caperton Trail, the attractive, climate-controlled facility houses the WVU Fleet that includes (5) eights, (3) fours, (4) pair/doubles and (3) singles. The facility also contains dressing facilities and locker room space for the athletes.

■■ In

addition, the dock easily allows (3) eights to launch simultaneously.

■■ The

Monongahela River, commonly referred to as “the Mon”, provides an idyllic rowing venue for the Mountaineers. A series of locks and dams along the Mon create a pooling effect so that a minimum navigable depth of nine feet is maintained year-round.

name Monongahela is derived from a Native American term loosely meaning “river of falling banks” and/or “river of high bluffs”. True to its name, the Mon flows well below its banks and is largely sheltered from prevailing winds by the surrounding bluffs. As such, the Mountaineers are often fortunate to train on calm water with little current.

■■ In

the spring of 2009, WVU served host to Dayton, Duquense and George Mason in its first-ever spring regatta on the Mon. The race ended at the Edith Barill Riverfront Park in nearby Star City.

WVU’s Boathouse is situated in the Wharf District of Morgantown, and just a short walk along the Caperton Rail Trail from the WVU Visitors’ Resource Center.

The scope of the athletic training services encompass various domains, which include injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that will enable the athlete to maintain optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition. Multiple athletic training rooms are available for the studentathletes, and are furnished with the latest technology and equipment. The athletic training staff will work in conjunction with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure that the studentathletes receive quality care throughout their career at WVU.

West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults. While many of the headlines center around the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the water, WVU athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in. WVU’s combined varsity athletic teams have an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 974. For the 2013-14 academic year, West Virginia had seven teams with a perfect 1,000: gymnastics, rowing, women’s basketball, cross country, rifle, tennis and women’s swimming and diving. In addition, the WVU rowing and gymnastics teams received public recognition by the NCAA for its latest multiyear APR scores. The two teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR is based upon eligibility and retention of student-athletes on a semester-by-semester basis and is an assessment of real-time academic success. The results of the fall and spring semesters, in a

given year, are calculated as that year’s APR score and averaged with the respective scores from the previous three years to provide a four-year (multi-year) snapshot of academic achievement. Following the 2014-15 season, 20 Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 Academic honors. Nineteen Mountaineers earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors, while one WVU student-athlete landed on the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team. Six members of the rowing squad also were named National Scholar Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) for the 2015 season. The group was comprised of Elizabeth Duarte, Kelly Kramer, Alisha Brownfield, Emily Deming, Madison James and Louisa Morgan. In addition, the rowing team averaged a 3.34 GPA throughout the 2015 spring semester. Eleven members were named to the President’s List, while 12 landed on the Dean’s List. Also of note, former rower Alexandra Basil was a recipient of the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the conference’s highest academic honor. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the “voice of the student-athlete” on WVU’s campus. SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. They offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Each year, WVU awards over $34 million in scholarships to more than 7,100 students from West Virginia and around the nation. There are many different types of scholarships available based on academic record, financial need, group affiliation or some combination of these factors. In 2013-14, over $394 million in financial aid was given out. The average financial package was $16,291. West Virginia residents may be eligible for the PROMISE scholarship in addition to WVU awards. Athletics A member of the NCAA, WVU competes at the Division I level in 18 varsity sports, 17 of which are members of the Big 12 Conference. JIMMY KING IS IN his ninth season at the helm of the West Virginia University rowing program. King has made tremendous strides with the team since taking over leadership responsibility during the 2007-08 season. The highlight of his tenure came in the 201112 season, as he oversaw all four crews advance to the Grand Finals, with two boats finishing in the top-10, at the Knecht Cup Regatta for the fourth time in program history. Each season has seen steady improvement since then as King continues to build WVU’s collegiate rowing program legacy.

At West Virginia 2014-15 West Virginia opened its spring slate with a series of races against Georgetown and North Carolina in Washington, D.C., on the Potomac River. The Mountaineers earned a first-place finish, a runner-up finish and a pair of third-place finishes behind Georgetown and North Carolina with their four crews at the event. The highlight of the day was the firstplace finish by the Varsity 4+ boat, crossing the line four seconds ahead of North Carolina. West Virginia then traveled to West Windsor, New Jersey, to compete at the Knecht Cup. The two-day event featured crews from 70 different schools across the country. The Women’s Second Varsity Eight boat posted a time of 7:02.19 to take home a win in the Petite Final, after placing third in its heat the day before. The Mountaineers held off Alabama’s boat by less than .77 seconds to place seventh overall out of 18 boats throughout the course of the two day event. After a two-week hiatus, the squad finished the 2015 regular season schedule at the EAWRC Sprints. The Mountaineers’ top finishes came from the Second and Third Varsity Eight boats. The Second Varsity Eight crew finished eighth overall out of 13 crews (7:06.876), and the Third Varsity Eight boat finished eighth overall and second in the Petite Final in front of Holy Cross, Rutgers and Buffalo with a time of 7:31.231. Come championship season, WVU amassed 52 points for a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

ROWING

The First Varsity Four continued its strong season, crossing the line in 7:58.13 to place fifth out of eight boats in the Grand Final, just one second shy of Tennessee’s boat. Senior Elizabeth Duarte was named to the All-Big 12 Rowing First Team.

At West Virginia 2013-14 During the 2013-14 campaign, the Mountaineers opened their season at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. A couple weeks later, WVU tallied four second-place finishes against Indiana on Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Indiana. The Mountaineers “A” Varsity 8+ completed the 2,000-meter course shortly behind the Hoosiers’ shell with a time of 7:10.02. At the Knecht Cup, the Novice Varsity 8+ finished third behind Buffalo and Drexel, and crossed the line with a mark of 7:17.02, earning a bronze medal. In addition, the Varsity 8+ crew posted a fourth-place finish in its opening heat at the Knecht Cup. The Mountaineers’ posted its fastest time of the day, claiming sixth in the semifinal heats in front of Alabama, Colgate and George Mason with a time of 6:57.21. WVU earned 50 points for a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City, with Courtney Schrand named to the All-Big 12 First Team and Karen Verwey named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. The Mountaineers season ended with a 10th-place finish at the Conference USA Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Courtney Schrand earned All-Conference USA honors as WVU missed out on the Grand Finals in the Varsity 8+ by .87 seconds with a fourth-place finish.

At West Virginia 2012-13 The 2012-13 season began at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Mountaineers secured a third-place finish in the Varsity 8+ “A” race, and second and first place honors in the “B” and “C” heats, respectively. A week later, the Varsity 8+ crew secured a first-place finish against Alabama and UCF, with a time of 7:41.5. At the Knecht Cup, WVU tallied two more top-10 finishes out of 34 crews in the Varsity 8+, as the Mountaineers topboat finished fifth with a mark of 6:49.14.

Come championship season, WVU amassed 75 points for a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship in Kansas City, Kansas. The Varsity 8+ crew continued its strong season, and posted a third-place finish, boasting two All-Big 12 selections. The Mountaineers season ended at the Conference USA Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where WVU finished in sixth place, just one point behind Kansas.

At West Virginia 2011-12 During the 2011-12 season, King guided multiple crews to top-10 finishes, as well as medal finishes, during the fall and spring seasons. Four medals were earned at the Head of Ohio in Pittsburgh, including firstplace finishes by the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ crews. At the Head of the Kanawha, King guided two shells to first-place finishes. Additionally, King coached the Varsity 4+ to a top-five finish at the Head of the Schuylkill, and earned three medals at the Frostbite Regatta. During the course of the spring season, King oversaw the advancement of all four crews to the Knecht Cup Regatta Grand Finals for only the fourth time in program history, including two top-10 finishes.

At West Virginia 2010-11 King guided the team to several medals and top-10 finishes in the 2010-11 season. At the Head of Ohio season opener in Pittsburgh, King led the Varsity 8+ and one doubles shell to a Gold medal as well as a second doubles shell to a silver medal. In addition, he coached the Mountaineers to top-10 finishes in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events at the prestigious Head of the Schuylkill. Furthermore, he saw the Varsity 4+ ‘A’ crew improve from previous years to earn a silver medal for the third year in a row at the Head of the Occoquan. Other notable performances included a silver medal finish by the Varsity 8+ at the Occoquan Sprints, a fifth-place finish at the Knecht Cup Regatta (only the second time in program history the Mountaineers have qualified for the Grand Finals), and a sixthplace finish at the Big East Championships (the first time since 2005 the Varsity 8+ has reached the Grand Finals at Big East).

King’s success with the team was not only limited to the water, but the program also saw its second All-American, as senior Rachel Viglianco earned the honor twice. Viglianco was named the CoSIDA Capital One All-America Women’s At-Large Second Team, and to the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s All-America team. In addition, five rowers were honored by the CRCA as National ScholarAthletes, with junior Shannon Gribbons named to the All Mid-Atlantic Region First Team. Gribbons became the first rower from WVU to earn this honor.

At West Virginia 2009-10 The 2009-10 season served as the foundation for success, as King developed the athletes that led the team the following season. Notable results included a third-place finish from the Varsity 8+ at the Head of the Ohio, and a first-place finish at the second annual Head of the Mon in the fall season. In the spring season, the Varsity 8+ crew finished first at North Carolina, and recorded a second-place finish at George Mason. The crew also rowed to a first-place finish in the petite finals at the Big East Championships, and a secondplace finish in the petite finals at the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship.

At West Virginia 2007-09 In his first two seasons as head coach, King saw great success with the Varsity 4+. King coached the Varsity 4+ to a second-place finish at the Head of the Ohio, respectively, as well as a first-place finish at the Head of the Occoquan and a first-place finish at Dayton. The Varsity 4+ also earned a second-place finish at the Knecht Cup, and a first-place finish in the petite finals at the Big East Championship. In addition, the crew placed fourth at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta.

Prior to WVU Prior to his time with WVU, King spent 10 years as the assistant rowing coach at Georgetown, where he was responsible for directing the men’s heavyweight squad, and for the day-to-day running of the women’s heavyweight program. While at Georgetown, King also provided administrative support to the part-time coaches of the women’s

lightweight program, as he helped institute the lightweight program for the Hoyas in 1999. In 2001, King served as coach of the U.S. National Team Lightweight Women’s Pair, which won the gold medal at the U.S. Rowing Championships in the Elite 2- and Lightweight 2-, and a silver medal at the FISA World Rowing Championship in the Women’s L2-. Prior to Georgetown, King served as coach for the men’s varsity crew squad at George Washington during 1996-97. He also served as the assistant coach and head coach of the men’s and women’s crew teams at Bucknell from 1990-96. King has also served as a coach for the Navy Rowing Camp each year since 2005. A six-day summer camp for girls ages 13-18, the camp places emphasis on technique development and personal improvement.

Personal Currently, King serves as a member of the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Committee, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Board of Directors and as the chair of the CRCA Division I Awards Committee. King also served as a member of the CRCA Division I Polling Committee from 2004-2009, President of the Big East Coaches Association from 2010-11, and as Vice President of the Big East Coaches Association from April 2004 – April 2006.

King was also instrumental in implementing the second-ever Head of the Mon in the spring of 2009. The Head of the Mon was a home regatta for the Mountaineers that included competition from Dayton, Duquesne and George Mason.

King is a 1990 graduate of Bucknell, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in legal studies.

Additionally, four members of the team were honored as CRCA National Scholar-Athletes.

AmandaMerritt ASSISTANT COACH

AMANDA MERRITT IS IN her third season with West Virginia University rowing program. Merritt serves as the head novice coach, coordinates community service events and manages the team’s social media outlets. In the 2014-15 season, West Virginia posted two top-five finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ event, earning a silver and bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia. In the 2013-14 season, the novice fours earned a silver and bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax, Virginia. In addition, the Novice 8+ advanced to the Grand Final and earned a bronze medal at the Knecht Cup. Merritt spent two years at Ohio State as a volunteer assistant coach for the Buckeyes’ rowing team. At OSU, Merritt aided in on-campus recruiting and gave instruction on both water and land rowing technique. Merritt also served as a camp instructor for Buckeye Sports Camps.

Prior to coaching at OSU, Merritt was a three-time varsity letterwinner for the Buckeyes’ rowing team. She garnered Academic All-Big Ten accolades on three occasions, was a five-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and was the recipient of the Golden Buckeye Award. Merritt served as a team captain on the Leadership Committee. During her senior year, she rowed in the 2V8+ that won a gold medal at the Big 10 Championship, followed by a fourth-place finish in the Grand Final at the NCAA Championship. In the 2009-10 season, Merritt rowed in the 2V8+ that claimed a bronze medal at the South/Central Region Sprints and a bronze medal at the Big 12 Ten Championship. That same boat placed 11th at the 2010 NCAA Championship. In the 2008-09 season, Merritt raced in the 2V4+ that won a gold medal in the Open Four category at the South/Central Region Sprints. A native of Lucasville, Ohio, Merritt graduated from OSU in June 2011 with bachelor’s degrees in strategic communication and cultural studies.

StaceyVan ASSISTANT COACH

STACEY VAN ORDER IS IN her fourth season as assistant coach for the West Virginia University rowing program. While at WVU, Van Order oversees all recruiting efforts and is the primary coach for the Varsity Fours. Since her arrival in 2012, the recruiting classes have quadrupled in size. At the 2015 Big 12 Rowing Championship, Van Order led the Mountaineers First Varsity Four to a fifth-place finish (7:58.13) in the Grand Final, just one second shy of Tennessee. Van Order came to Morgantown from Delaware, where she had served as the assistant women’s rowing coach since 2011. With the Blue Hens, she served as the head novice coach, created and executed training plans and coordinated all regatta entries. Van Order also recruited student-athletes and managed the team’s social media outlets. In her only season at Delaware, the Blue Hens finished sixth at the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championship. The squad placed fifth in the Varsity Fours and Second Varsity Eights, and

finished sixth in the Varsity Eights. Additionally, Rachel Conway was named to the All-CAA Team. Van Order also led the Novice 8+ to a fourth-place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta. Prior to joining the Delaware staff, Van Order worked at the Wyandotte Boat Club in Wyandotte, Michigan, throughout the summer of 2011, and served as the junior women’s coach and the head coach of “Youth Learn to Row.” Her duties included creating and executing training plans for the junior women, coordinating regatta entries for summer racing, and running two, two-week sessions of “Youth Learn to Row.” A four-year member (2004-08) of the Eastern Michigan rowing team, Van Order earned the Eagles’ Varsity of the Year Award as a senior. As a graduate assistant for the EMU squad from 2008-11, she served as the recruiting coordinator and coached the novice team. Van Order also conducted tryouts for walk-ons, and created and executed workouts. Van Order is a US Rowing Level III certified coach. A native of Battle Creek, Michigan, Van Order earned a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning from EMU in 2008.

The West Virginia University rowing team is ready to race into the 2016 season. The Mountaineers return 24 student-athletes from the 2015 season and welcome 22 newcomers to the mix, who will compete for the first time on the collegiate stage this season. As ninth-year coach Jimmy King looks ahead to the 2016 season, he reflects on the 2015 fall slate and discusses his expectations for the upcoming spring campaign.

2015 Fall Season The novice team swept Duquesne, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon to conclude the fall season on Nov. 7, on the Allegheny River. The novice 8 ‘A’ boat raced to a first-place finish with a time of 11:11.86, five seconds ahead of Pitt. The Novice 8 ‘B’ boat also won, finishing in front of Pitt with a time of 10:37.8 on a course approximately 200 meters shorter than the first novice 8 competition. In the last two races of the

day, West Virginia finished first with a time of 11:40.8 in the Novice 4 ‘A’ race, followed by another first-place finish in the Novice 4 ‘B’ race. The Head of the Occoquan was the first regatta of the season for the novice team on Oct. 31. Eight of the Mountaineers’ 10 boats posted top-10 finishes on the Occoquan Reservoir. WVU’s four medals came with first-and second-place finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+, a bronze-medal finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 and a fifth-place finish in the Women’s Championship 4+. The WVU rowing team also had a strong showing in its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio on Oct. 3. The Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8. To open the day, West Virginia finished second in the Women’s Open 8, competing against 12 boats to take a silver medal back home to Morgantown.

West Virginia added five recruits to the roster this season: Madison Hrynda, Janae Hurst, Carly Ledbetter, Kaitlin Sullivan and Emma Winders. Hrynda, Hurst, Ledbetter, Sullivan and Winders all competed and attributed to the Mountaineers’ success during the fall season. The Mountaineers also added 17 novice rowers from the fall season to the varsity roster this spring. Thirteen rowers are freshmen, while four sophomore rowers completed the Mountaineers’ lineup this spring.

Senior Leadership The Mountaineers roster consists of five seniors – Alison Coates, Susannah Hartlove, Brittany James, Sadie Kalathunkal and Elizabeth Kantak. Coates, Hartlove, James and Kantak have been a part of the rowing squad since their freshmen year, while Kalathunkal joined the Mountaineers’ in her sophomore year at WVU. All five seniors have made an immense impact on the team. This season, coach King hopes that each individual influences the underclassmen in a positive manner. “We do have a young team, but we fortunately have many leaders as well,” King stated. “Although the senior class is small,

they are relied upon to help teach their younger teammates not only about our team but about our sport. That’s where our upperclassmen can play an integral role in the overall development of our team.”

Winter Training For the second consecutive year, the Mountaineers headed south to Cocoa Beach, Florida, to train in the unfrozen waters. The annual trip to Florida helps develop the bond with the novice and varsity squads as they train for the 2016 season. The Mountaineers practiced in the morning and again in the afternoon. The morning practices are longer and have a higher intensity, while the afternoon rows are a chance for technical work and work in smaller boats. The team also gets down to the nitty gritty on the ergs during the winter months in Morgantown. “The majority of our time is spent on the ergs, but we break up the physical and mental grind of the ergs with a bit of cross training, primarily in the form of running,” King noted. “The team is in the weight room twice a week in order to build their endurance. They also work on injury prevention exercises.

“Our Florida camp was very productive this year despite many windy days and less than ideal water currents. The quality of rowing was quite good, considering our seven-week absence from the water. Rather than getting back to where we ended in the fall, we picked right back up and continued to progress throughout the week. That time also is very helpful as the varsity and novice squads merge into one team. A good winter camp helps ramp up the energy level going into our true winter training period on the ergs.”

Mental Focus Rowing is a sport of mental focus. Coach King wants the team to mentally and physically prepare for every race this season, heading into the Big 12 Championship. “It varies a bit person-to-person and that’s something we’ll remind the team about on the eve of our first competition,” King explained. “Some prepare quietly and want to be left alone, while others feed off the energy and chatter of their teammates. Teammates need to recognize and respect these differences, but at the same time, the focus turns from the individual to the crew. That’s where routine comes into play. The routine of when we arrive at the course

then meet by the trailer. The routine of the land warm-up and pre-race discussions. All of these things serve not only logistical and physical needs, but emotional needs as well.”

High Expectations The Mountaineers will face several Big 12 opponents throughout the spring season in preparation for the 2016 Big 12 Rowing Championship. Last year, the Mountaineers finished fifth among Big 12 programs at the 2015 Big 12 Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, amassing 52 points. Senior Elizabeth Duarte was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. This season, the Mountaineers are prepared to continue to improve and have great success. “We’re in a better position now than we were this time last year, but our team is small,” King noted. “A few rowers are out for various reasons and their absence will be felt at the start of the season, but we expect to have them all back sooner rather than later. As the first-year rowers, both recruits and novices, develop through the spring, we’re expecting much greater contributions from them at the end of the year.”

THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY ROWING TEAM completed its 14th season in the spring of 2015 with 20 Mountaineers earning All-Big 12 Academic honors. Nineteen Mountaineers earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors, while one WVU student-athlete landed on the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.

Six members of the rowing squad also were named National Scholar Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) for the 2015 season. The group was comprised of Elizabeth Duarte, Kelly Kramer, Alisha Brownfield, Emily Deming, Madison James and Louisa Morgan.

The 2015 spring schedule featured five events and a dual race in Morgantown on the Monongahela River. The Mountaineers traveled to Washington D.C., Indiana and Tennessee, and trekked to New Jersey twice for the Knecht Cup and EAWRC Sprints last season.

Also of note, former rower Alexandra Basil was a recipient of the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the conference’s highest academic honor. The Mountaineers opened their fall season on Oct. 4, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. West Virginia posted three top-10 finishes in the Women’s Open 8+ event, earning a silver medal at the Head of the Ohio Regatta on the Allegheny RIver. Following a month off from competition, West Virginia continued its fall season workouts at the Head of the Occoquan, in Fairfax Station, Virginia (Nov. 1). The regatta was highlighted by two top-five finishes in the Women’s

West Virginia then concluded its fall season a week later, as the novice team squared off against Duquesne on the Monongahela River to win all five pieces (Nov. 7).

The Mountaineers kicked off their spring season with a pair of dual races against Georgetown and North Carolina on March 28. The Mountaineers earned a first-place finish, a pair of third-place finishes and a runner-up finish behind Georgetown and North Carolina with their four crews at the event. A week later, the Mountaineers traveled to Bloomington, Indiana, for a scrimmage against the Hoosiers on Lake Lemon. Over the course of two days, West Virginia competed in a number of different pieces against Indiana from April 3-4. Following the scrimmage with Indiana, the Mountaineers traveled to West Windsor, New

Jersey, for the famous Knecht Cup Regatta on April 11-12. The two-day event featured crews from 70 different schools across the country. The Mountaineers’ top finish came from the women’s second varsity eight boat, which won the Petite Final on Mercer Lake. The rowing team then welcomed Duquesne for a scrimmage on the Monongahela River, as the Mountaineers competed in a number of different pieces on April 19. West Virginia wrapped up its regular season on May 3, at the EAWRC Sprints in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The Mountaineers’ top finishes came from the second and third varsity eight boats, placing second in its respective Petite Finals. After a week off from competition, West Virginia then concluded its 2015 season at the Big 12 Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from May 16-17. The crews put together their best racing of the season, as the first and second varsity four boats placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Grand Final. The squad placed fifth among Big 12 opponents and seventh in team standings. Elizabeth Duarte also was named to the AllBig 12 First Team.

HenleyRoyalRegatta: INCHES MAKE CHAMPIONS

The sport of rowing is not one in which achievements are often recognized. So when the West Virginia University rowing team acquired a new Varsity 4+ Vespoli racing shell and was contemplating a name, the decision to reach out and ask some former team members for help came as a pleasant surprise.

“It was such an honor,” said former coxswain Christine DiRienzo. “When Tina Griffith sent us an email telling us that they were going to name the boat and wanted us to help, I immediately pulled out my old photo album and starting looking through everything.” DiRienzo had many fond memories to reminisce upon, including the 2001 season when she led the women’s Varsity 4+ to a first-place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta, subsequently earning an invitation to the Women’s Royal Henley Regatta in England, one of the most prestigious events in women’s rowing. In fact, it was this very accomplishment that had five women traveling from all areas of the country in early October, from both east and west coast, to come to Morgantown and participate in a boat christening in their honor. It had been nearly ten years since Griffith, Risha Kelley, Erin Nisbet, Noelle Dodge and DiRienzo had come together for a crew related event, and for a few, the first time they had seen each other in nearly a decade. There was laughter, hugs, and memories to share, but perhaps most importantly, a lasting legacy to leave behind for future generations of Mountaineer rowers. A legacy of what can happen when hard work, determination and enthusiasm are put forth every day. The journey to Henley began during the team’s spring training trip in Miami. The coach at that time, Nancy LaRocque, noticed right away that this group of women had something special. “She noticed that we had really good flow and really good body mechanics,” said Dodge. “When she saw that she kept telling us that we could be great and that we could be the best. We believed that, and we just felt unstoppable. We were all mentally in it to win it.” The team won its first race of the season convincingly, beating Cincinnati and Louisville to the finish line at Hersha Lake with a time of 7:23.6. But it was the second race of the season that really changed the way they looked at things. After making it to the finals at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association’s (SIRA) Regatta, the team came in second to Jacksonville by mere inches. It was a loss that would spur the team on to great success, though they didn’t know it at the time.

“We had such drive after the race in Tennessee,” detailed Nisbet. “It just drove us for the rest of the season. We just had confidence and we walked around with our heads up knowing that no one was going to take us down again and no one was going to beat us. I just remember having this fuel, and this feeling inside that once we got into the boat, no one was going to get in our way. After we finished a race, we were focused on the next challenge and thinking about how we were going to achieve and overcome it.” The team next took on the BIG EAST Championships, where it won in a BIG EAST record setting time of 7:33.08, before moving on to the Dad Vail Regatta. The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and universities from across the United States and Canada converging in Philadelphia during the second weekend of May.

It would have been an honor for the West Virginia team just to finish well. But this Varsity 4+ had trained long and hard for a race such as this, and they weren’t going to take home anything less than gold. “When you really mesh with your team and your group, you really feel the flow,” Nisbet explained. “You can just feel and anticipate each other’s movements, something that’s really hard to obtain. But once you get that and you know what that feeling is, you’re able to get that in a lot of those races. Instead of four rowers, we were able to become one which is really what drove us.” The Mountaineers earned a much deserved victory that day before heading back to Morgantown to finish school and start the beginning of their summer vacations. They never anticipated what would happen next. “After we won Vails, we didn’t know right away that we were going to go to Henley,” Nisbet reminisced. “There were a few weeks in between and then we got the call and we had to come back to school. We had all just started our summer jobs and the next thing we know we get a call saying that we need to come back to school for a few weeks to train.” “My parents had got me a graduation trip to Mexico and we couldn’t go,” laughed DiRienzo. “My brother was so mad at me!” Invitations to Women’s Royal Henley are few and far between. After the team’s convincing win, the Dad Vail Regatta organizers selected the West Virginia team to travel to Henley because it felt that the team had the best chance of winning, despite the fact that no team the committee had ever selected had ever made it past the second round.

Upon arriving in England, the women noticed right away that things were done much differently in Europe. “I remember that the course was 1,500-meters for the women because as a women’s crew you couldn’t finish or go over the men’s finish line which was at 2,000-meters,” explained Dodge. “We trained for 2,000-meters and we only had to race 1,500. It made it somewhat easier, but in Europe they row at a much faster rate and every stroke was faster. So the faster pace made it much more challenging because the way we rowed was slow, strong and steady.” “You’d think it would be easier just because it’s shorter,” added DiRiezno. “But your body is already trained for 2,000-meters so you know how to hold it.” In addition, instead of racing four to six crews at a time as they do in the United States, at Henley, only two crews race in each heat. Due to this, the women had to race in three rounds, each with a quick turnaround. They sailed through the first round, easily defeating Bowdoin’s crew. The next race wasn’t so easy, however. “The second race was really close; it had the feel of a final race. It was against Birmingham and we emptied the tank on that one because it was such a neck to neck race,” said Dodge. “We took the boat off the water afterwards and put it on the shore and literally five minutes later we had to pick it up and put it back in the water for the finals.” The team came in second to England’s Oxford Brookes University in the final round. Despite coming in second place, there is no denying that the team accomplished something that no one could ever have expected. “When we came back, even though we didn’t win, it was considered such an honor for the University that the president at the time, David Hardesty, got us plaques to honor us for going over and representing West Virginia,” said DiRienzo. “It’s the best plaque I ever received,” added Griffith. It seems only appropriate that ten years later, the team was welcomed back to Morgantown with open arms to celebrate a journey that hasn’t been equaled since. And only more appropriate that the shell was christened the Inches Make Champions, in honor of the race in Tennessee that truly propelled the team on its record-breaking path to Henley. As the team stood in front of the newest members of the rowing program, telling stories, drinking champagne and reminiscing, it became very clear that while many rowing achievements may go unrecognized, this is one that will never be forgotten.

E.GORDON Gee PRESIDENT

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the University’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1981, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Gee has served on several educationgovernance organizations and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents, the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public

and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission. And in March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/ Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is the Medicaid Medical Director for the State of Louisiana, and an assistant professor of Public Health and Medicine at Louisiana State University. She is also a Norman F. Gant/American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/IOM Anniversary Fellow. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón, and they have five children.

West Virginia native Shane Lyons was named director of Intercollegiate Athletics and associate vice president at West Virginia University in January 2015. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction with Alabama athletic directors – the late Mal Moore and current athletic director Bill Battle. At WVU, Lyons has oversight of 18 varsity sports, a department budget of approximately $80 million, 220 employees, approximately 450 student-athletes and a facilities master plan that included the opening of a $21 million baseball park and more $75 million to modernize other athletic venues in the next three years. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, daily monitoring of compliance and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. He also was a member and served as chairman on many prominent committees within the NCAA Governance structure during his tenure with the ACC. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units.

Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of the 25 membership service representatives. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conferencewide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. He and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron, 16, and Brooke, 12. He is the University’s 12th athletic director, replacing Oliver Luck, who resigned in December to accept a position with the NCAA.

The West Virginia University athletic communications office will be available throughout the 2016 rowing season to accommodate any media requests. Following are some guidelines that should make it easy for media members to cover the West Virginia rowing team. Any additional questions should be directed to rowing contact Amy Salvatore.

During the Week

Any member of the media wishing to interview a player or member of the coaching staff during the week should contact West Virginia rowing contact Amy Salvatore, via email (alsalvatore@ mail.wvu.edu) or by phone (304-293-2821), at least 24 hours in advance. Cell phone numbers will not be made available, and all WVU student-athletes have been instructed to not conduct interviews without prior approval of the athletic communications staff.
