West Virginia University is on probation until February 17, 2017, for violations involving impermissible telephone and text communications that occurred in a number of our athletics programs. BIG 12

THE BIG 12 Conference celebrates its 20th year as it continues to promote the strength and success of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier athletic conferences under the direction of fourth-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 Conference, comprised of 10 members, remains the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. West Virginia and TCU joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 37 million people. More than 4,200 student-athletes from across the United States and around the world compete annually in the sports sponsored by the conference. Whether on the field, in the classroom or in the community, student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the Big 12 can boast 54 NCAA team titles and 587 individual National Championships. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

IN THE

REPRESENTING WEST VIRGINIA University, the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia in a charitable manner is important to the WVU women’s tennis team.

The Mountaineers are constantly involved in community service activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the Children’s Hospital and the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which makes the team aware of any volunteer openings in the area.

The women’s tennis team also hosts youth camps and clinics throughout the year in order to involve the community with the program. Becoming successful and positive role models on and off the court are important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers give back to Morgantown and its surrounding communities every chance they get.

Mountaineer Tennis Courts

THE MOUNTAINEER TENNIS Courts boast six rebound-ace hard courts and grandstand seating for more than 500 spectators. The facility is located on campus, adjacent to the WVU Coliseum, providing ample parking and easy access for players and fans alike. The courts were fully-lighted and resurfaced as part of the 2012 West Virginia’s Basketball Practice Facility project.

“We host fall tournaments outdoors, and we play outside throughout the fall semester. It is beautiful here in West Virginia. The training room, weight room and academic center are all within walking distances from the tennis courts. Ridgeview Racquet Club Ridgeview Racquet Club offers a place for the West Virginia University women’s tennis team to compete during inclement weather. Ridgeview features four indoor championship cushioned Deco Turf System courts, a climate-controlled environment with lighting at a competitive level for full sun protection from UV rays and spectator viewing areas to watch and enjoy the competitive play. These courts were used at the US Open and Tennis Masters Cincinnati. Ridgeview also offers five outdoor lighted Hartru clay courts. In addition, the spacious club house offers private men’s and women’s locker rooms, a luxurious lobby and a player’s lounge with a big screen TV. Members can play, relax and socialize in a pleasant, quiet environment. At Ridgeview, the WVU women’s tennis team has priority at designated times, and will be accommodated for indoor play in the event of inclement weather. In addition, there is a full service pro shop and instructional services by professional coaching and teaching instructors, along with on-court technology for stroke and playing analysis.

THE WEST VIRGINIA University athletic training program looks to get its student-athletes back on the court in a timely manner, while providing quality health care for its student-athletes and coaches.

The scope of the athletic training services encompass various domains, which include injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that enables the athlete to maintain optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition. Multiple athletic training rooms are available for student-athletes, as the rooms are furnished with the latest technology and equipment. The athletic training staff works side by side with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure that the studentathletes receive quality care throughout their career at WVU.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE AND strength and conditioning go hand-inhand at West Virginia University. WVUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength and conditioning staff ensures that all student-athletes are on year-long programs designed to continue improving the fitness capabilities needed in their sports. To keep athletes improving and in peak physical condition, WVU offers a variety of training areas and an array of strength programs designed to increase performance. Student-athletes will have their own program individually calculated and updated throughout the year. At WVU, student-athletes can rest assured that their strength staff is monitoring their performance on a daily basis. Equipped with excellent amenities and staffed by some of the finest strength coaches in the nation, athletes who come to WVU know that they are in good hands when it comes to their athletic capacity.

Development STUDENT-ATHLETE

“We always say that the players are studentathletes, and that the word student comes before the athlete. Education is part of college athletics, and I hope we get to the point where we will be graduating tennis players who will go on a professional tour, but education never hurts.” – Miha Lisac WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help studentathletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults. While many of the headlines center on the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the court, WVU athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in. WVU’s combined varsity athletic teams have an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 974. For the 2013-14 academic year, West Virginia had seven teams with a perfect 1,000: gymnastics, rowing, women’s basketball, cross country, rifle, tennis and women’s swimming and diving. The APR is based upon eligibility and retention of studentathletes on a semester-by-semester basis and is an assessment of real-time academic success. The results of the fall and spring semesters, in a given year, are calculated as that year’s APR score and averaged with the respective scores from the previous three

years to provide a four-year (multi-year) snapshot of academic achievement. Following the 2014-15 season, four Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 Academic honors. Graduate Ikttesh Chahal, senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while junior Kaja Mrgole landed on the second team. West Virginia women’s tennis team was named an ITA AllAcademic Team for the second consecutive year. Barrett was tabbed as an ITA Scholar-Athlete and was also selected to participate in the 2015 NCAA Career in Sports Forum. In addition, sophomores Carolina Lewis, Yvon Martinez and Habiba Shaker, and Barrett, Choo and Mrgole were named to the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Over 500 athletes were honored on The Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. This honor was implemented in 1989, and was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Barrett, Chahal, Choo, Lewis, Mrgole and Shaker were also named to the 2014-15 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. A total of 488 student-athletes were represented on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, and 43 of them registered a 4.0 GPA. Additionally, seven student-athletes were named recipients of the fifth annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement award, which is the Big 12 Conference’s highest academic achievement.

Continuing-Eligibility Program

◆◆ Former Mountaineer athletes are returning to school to complete work on their degrees, some after as many as 10 years away from Morgantown. ◆◆ The program was created in 1989 to give those studentathletes who are close to graduating an opportunity to come back to school to complete their degrees. ◆◆ Since its creation, dozens of students have participated, with a success rate of better than 80 percent. ◆◆ In 1992, WVU joined the growing list of schools that are a part of an NCAA-sponsored consortium. ◆◆ Similar to the post-eligibility program in providing former student-athletes a chance to continue work toward their degrees, the closely screened consortium requires participants to be more involved in community-related activities. ◆◆ The consortium students are often much older athletes, who left the University to pursue professional sports or business careers, but now wish to return to complete their degrees.

Graduation Rates

◆◆ West Virginia University’s graduation rate for student-athletes has been impressive. The ratio of student-athletes graduating to the general student body has increased almost every year. ◆◆ The graduation rate for student-athletes is based upon the number of students who entered the University receiving athletic scholarship aid in a given academic year, and their progress over six years.

What Is Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)?

◆◆ The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) provides a forum for the “voice of the student-athlete” on WVU’s campus. ◆◆ SAAC membership provides feedback to administration about how to better WVU athletic programs. ◆◆ Two representatives from each varsity team at West Virginia University are either elected by their teammates or selected by the members of their coaching staff. ◆◆ Under the guidance of SAAC advisor Terri Howes, the SAAC meets regularly to discuss current issues and concerns of WVU’s student-athletes. ◆◆ SAAC leaders attend Big 12 Conference SAAC meetings to exchange ideas with other student-athletes from Big 12 schools regarding student-athlete’s collegiate experience.

IN 2014, FORMER West Virginia University women’s tennis player Jo Marie (Cinco) Bohn was inducted into the 24th annual WVU Sports Hall of Fame at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.

Although, the highlight of her college years were not the accolades she received year after year, but simply donning the Old Gold and Blue.

“It was so unexpected. As I look back on the previous inductees and their past collegiate accomplishments, I was completely shocked that I was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame,” Bohn said.

“I enjoyed the team, traveling and even the band practicing as we practiced on the courts. It still gives me chills to hear “The Pride of West Virginia” play at games today. I truly can say that I miss it all,” Bohn said.

A former standout for the women’s tennis team, Bohn put together a career record of 214-73 from 1988 to 1992 under former coach Martha Thorn. Bohn received her degree in sports management from WVU in 1992, and 22 years later she continues to remain at the top of the record book.

As the assistant coach for the women’s tennis team at the University of Charleston from 2012-14, Bohn encouraged her players to live in the moment and to not take the game they love for granted.

The 1989 Atlantic 10 Conference Freshman of the Year, Bohn finished her career as the 1992 Atlantic 10 Senior of the Year and remains the only player in WVU history to win more than 60 matches in one season and have two 30-win seasons in singles matches. Bohn also was honored with a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team in her final season as a Mountaineer. “This honor means a lot to me. I come from a small women’s sport at a large University,” Bohn said, a native of Charleston, West Virginia. “I also come from a small high school, Charleston Catholic High, so to receive the highest collegiate athletic award one can acquire is an amazing feeling.”

“As a college athlete you only get four years to play, so why not give it your all and leave with no regrets,” Bohn said. “Then hopefully down the road you can look back and be proud of your contribution to your University.” Bohn resides in Charleston with husband, Pete Bohn, and their two children, Jada and Xavier. She is currently a tennis instructor at the local YMCA and the Charleston Tennis Club. The 2014 class also included Michael Anti (rifle), Chris Enochs (baseball), George King (men’s basketball), Mike Krak (golf), Gene Lathey (football), Mike Logan (football) and Lester Rowe (men’s basketball). Scholarships and Aid

A member of the NCAA, WVU competes at the Division I level in 18 varsity sports, 17 of which are members of the Big 12 Conference. Teams make regular post-season bowl appearances in football, including winning the 2012 Discover Orange Bowl, and NCAA tournament appearances in men’s and women’s basketball, including a trip to the Sweet 17 in 2015; women’s soccer won its second consecutive Big 12 tournament championship and made its 15th straight NCAA appearance in 2014; women’s basketball was the Big 12 regular-season champion in 2014 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, The WVU rifle team won its 17th national title in 2015, and in 2014 became the first WVU athletic team to visit the White House on NCAA Champions Day. Admission and Application Timeline

Admission is based on a combination of high school GPA and ACT or SAT scores. Applications are processed beginning September 15 for admission the following fall. March 1 is the deadline for West Virginia residents to submit PROMISE Scholarship applications. MIHA LISAC (MEE-HA LEE-SOTS) IS in his third season as head coach at West Virginia University. A 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac previously spent six seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he built one of the top Division I programs in the nation. Lisac is a former student-athlete at Georgia State and served as the men’s assistant coach for two years. In 2007, Lisac was named head coach of the women’s tennis team at his alma mater. While at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, back-to-back CAA Championship final appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record stands at 75-80 as head coach. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009, when he guided Georgia State to the first NCAA Championship appearance in school history and was named CAA Coach of the year.

At West Virginia

West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 overall record. The Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010 and earned the program’s 450th win at Toledo on Jan. 31. In the spring season, WVU competed against nine ranked opponents, with its last five competitors ranked in the nation’s Top 40. Senior Hailey Barrett earned her first victory over a ranked opponent in 2015, defeating Baylor’s then-ranked No. 82 Rachael Jakes-Baker in straight sets. Sophomore Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles wins in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record. Sophomore Habiba Shaker also held a team-best mark in doubles play (12-5) as she teamed up with Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez, Barett and Lewis throughout the spring season. In his first season at West Virginia, Lisac led the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Atlantic Region entering the spring season. The WVU duo finished the fall season at 5-8 and battled their way to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia. Vivian Tsui tallied three straight wins at the USTA/ITA Regionals and made it further in the main singles draw bracket than any other Mountaineer, after surviving the qualifying bracket. In the spring season, freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole led the team with a combined 24 wins in singles and doubles. Mrgole posted a team-high 13 wins in the spring.

Tennis

At Georgia State

Lisac’s final season with Georgia State was a benchmark year for the program, as Abigail Tere-Apisah became the school’s first-ever tennis All-American, after advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship. Tere-Apisah also took home CAA Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer honors. Whitney Byrd and Maryna Kozachenko became just the second pair in Lisac’s tenure to earn All-CAA First Team Doubles honors. The team advanced to its second straight CAA finals and earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history (No. 38 on Feb. 25, 2012). The team finished the season ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings for a third consecutive year, after defeating three nationally ranked opponents. In 2010-11, the Panthers achieved a No. 55 ranking to finish the season, earning a spot at the national indoor tournament in the spring. The tournament took the top 64 teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed an outstanding season, advancing to the CAA Championship final and earning a 15-4 overall record, including an 8-2 mark on the road. In Lisac’s third season as coach, the team reached the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament for the third straight year, while also producing two All-CAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first team singles, second team doubles) and Linda Hricistova (second team doubles). Nakic was named CAA Co-Player of the Year, after recording a perfect 17-0 season (in singles and dual match play). She was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship. In 2009, Lisac presided over one of the most successful women’s tennis campaigns in Georgia State history, as the Panthers captured their first conference title to reach the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. GSU posted an 11-5 record and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 47. For his efforts, Lisac was honored as CAA Coach of the Year. In his coaching debut, Lisac led the Panthers to an 11-9 dualmatch record and a berth in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament during the 2008 season. Three Panthers earned All-CAA honors; Dariana Kozmina, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova.

Academic Success

Last spring, Lisac’s squad averaged a 3.59 GPA, as four Mountaineers were honored by the Big 12. Graduate Ikttesh Chahal, senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while junior Kaja Mrgole landed on the second team. In 2014, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all WVU teams with a 3.54 GPA, while four players received Academic

All-Big 12 First Team honors: Irinka Toidze, Vivian Tsui, Chahal and Barrett. The Mountaineers also were named to the ITA AllAcademic Team, with three individuals earning ITA Scholar-Athlete awards: Oana Manole, Chahal and Toidze. At GSU, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all GSU teams on several occasions, recording its highest GPA of 3.72 in the fall of 2007, AS multiple Panthers were named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award list. Mateja Podgorsek also was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team in 2008, while Martina Nitkova was honored as the 2009 CAA ScholarAthlete of the Year for women’s tennis.

As an Assistant

From 2005-07, Lisac worked under Nick Brochu, former coach of the GSU men’s tennis squad, before transitioning to the men’s coaching position. In 2007, Lisac helped guide the men’s tennis team to its first league title as a member of the CAA and an NCAA berth. That year, Martin Steigwardt became the first Panther in history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship. The 2007 squad set the school record for dual match victories with a 19-5 mark and ended the season ranked No. 36 in the country.

Personal

Lisac was born and raised in Velenje in the European nation of Slovenia, where he was ranked among the country’s top-10 juniors. A 2005 graduate of Georgia State, Lisac lettered four years for the Panthers and was a two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection and a four-time conference academic honoree.

EMILY HARMAN JOINED the West Virginia program as an assistant coach in the summer of 2015. Harman brings a vast amount of knowledge and experience from her playing days at the collegiate and professional level. A native of Petersburg, West Virginia, Harman spent three years on the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour as a professional athlete. Harman obtained career-high WTA world rankings of No. 232 in doubles and No. 966 in singles. While competing within the pro-ranks, Harman won two doubles titles, as she was crowned champion at the 2013 Buffalo 10K and at the 2015 Baton Rouge 25K. Prior to her professional career, Harman was a standout tennis player at the No. 1 singles and doubles slots at Syracuse. A three-time team captain and MVP award winner, Harman entered the century club and compiled a career record of 125-60 over the course of her collegiate career. A three-time All-Big East selection, Harman also assisted the Orange to a No. 39 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking under former coach Luke Jensen during her senior campaign. Throughout her tenure at Syracuse, Harman excelled in the classroom, too. She was named to the Big East All-Academic Team for four consecutive years and earned the 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America Third Team District I At-Large honors.

A Big East Female Scholar Athlete honoree, Harman received the Doris Soladay Award, considered the most prestigious award given to one male and one female student-athlete by the Syracuse athletic department. A nominee for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year, Harman graduated from Syracuse summa cum laude in 2012 with a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in health and exercise science and a minor in biology.

Preview 2016 SEASON

WITH THE MIX of six veteran returners and four highly touted freshmen, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team enters the 2016 season more ready than ever before. The Mountaineers return six student-athletes (Hailey Barrett, Lyn Yuen Choo, Carolina Lewis, Yvon Martinez, Kaja Mrgole and Habiba Shaker) from the 2015 squad, all of whom saw Big 12 action last season. In addition to the six returners, West Virginia welcomes four newcomers to the mix, as Hannah Cseplo, Paula Goetz, Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White compete for the first time on the collegiate stage this season. As third-year coach Miha Lisac previews the 2016 season, he reflects on the 2015 fall slate and discusses his expectations for the upcoming spring dual-match season.

2015 Fall Season

In the fall, the Mountaineers competed in five tournaments. Shaker led the team with nine singles wins, followed by Barrett and Choo with eight and seven victories, respectively. The doubles tandems of Barrett and Martinez, Lewis and Choo and Mrgole and Shaker all posted 4-3 doubles records. The team tallied a 67-64 combined record this fall. “We are working on the right things going into the spring season,” Lisac noted. “Each and every player has improved, and we are also improving as a team. We are not far off, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, there is more work to be done, but we can see that we are capable of playing well and can capitalize on points when given the opportunity.”

Focus on Doubles

This spring, the Mountaineers are looking for more consistent results in singles and doubles play. With the level of play in the Big 12, West Virginia has to be ready to perform each and every match. WVU looks to draw more confidence as they compete against some of the nation’s top-ranked teams this season. “With (assistant coach) Emily (Harman) on board, we were able to dedicate a lot of our time to doubles play this fall,” Lisac explained. “We were able to take steps forward in doubles play, and I firmly believe that the results will start to show in the spring semester. Hopefully, we will win doubles points more consistently this spring. “In the past, we have showed some potential in doubles play, but overall, it was very inconsistent. Even though doubles is only worth one point, it is probably the most important point. A lot of close matches come to a 4-3 result. I believe that we will be able to draw a lot more confidence with the way that we are going to come out and perform in matches this year.”

A Young Squad

Eighty percent of the Mountaineers’ 2015-16 roster is underclassmen. Heading into the fall, last year’s four freshmen showed a lot of potential. Choo, Lewis and Shaker tallied a 30-win season (singles and doubles), while Martinez recorded

a 20-win season (singles and doubles). Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles wins in a season, as she ended her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record. The freshmen class alone recorded a 70-34 singles record throughout the 2014-15 season.

Fresh Faces

This season, the Mountaineers add Cseplo, Goetz, Rosiello and White to the 2015-16 roster. White and Rosiello hail from West Virginia as the No. 1 and No. 2 recruits in the state, respectively. A native of Charleston, West Virginia, White was a four-year letterwinner at Georgetown High and played at the No. 1 singles and doubles position. Rosiello hails from Morgantown, where she led Morgantown High to its first team state championship in school history her senior year. Goetz comes to Morgantown from Rottenburg am Neckar, Germany, where she competed in the 2013 and 2014 ITF Junior Circuits to reach the quarterfinals. A native of Concord Township, Ohio, Cseplo trained at the Gomez Tennis Academy in Naples, Florida, and competed in the ITF Pro and Junior Circuits as well. “I believe that they have the desire to make this program a success,” Lisac stated. “They have the capacity to do so, and they have showed resilience and perseverance throughout the fall semester. They pushed through certain levels, and they raised their preparation and work ethic to a higher level. That’s the beginning of the process, but there is still a lot of work ahead of us. Our goal is to be at our best tennis by the end of the spring semester going into the Big 12 Championship.”

Junior Focus

A native of Jesenice, Slovenia, Mrgole is the lone junior on the team. In two seasons, she has played primarily at the No. 1 singles position. Last spring, Mrgole tallied a 20-win season (singles/doubles) with an overall record of 25-37. She tallied nine singles wins throughout the spring season. Majoring in exercise physiology, Mrgole was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team her freshman year and landed on the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team as a sophomore. She also was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll during each semester of play. “Kaja is very focused,” Lisac stated. “She is determined to work hard and put forth the necessary work in order to be successful. I am looking forward to watching her grow within the next two seasons at West Virginia.”

A Tough Road Ahead

Last season, the Mountaineers competed against nine ranked opponents, as they played in arguably one of the toughest conferences in the country. This season, five Big 12 opponents are ranked in the top 40 in the latest ITA national rankings, while nonconference opponents Virginia Tech and Marshall are ranked No. 30 and No. 52, respectively. “We have been preparing for Big 12 play since the fall semester,” Lisac said. “We are doing the right things. We are continuing to grow as a team, and we are tougher. There is still a tough road ahead of us when it comes to preparing for the Big 12 schedule. “We have to be match ready by mid-March. We have to be matched prepared. The Big 12 has not changed. We do not

expect anything different this year. There are not a lot of secrets as far as what we have to do. We have to be more diligent in our preparation. We have to be more consistent in our preparation, and we have to be more consistent in match play.” “The Big 12 has some of the top programs in the country, and we know that we have our work cut out for us. Our opponents will be ready to play, and we have to be ready to do the same. Once conference play starts, it is going to be far from easy.”

New Big 12 Tennis Policy is a Scream

Big 12 tennis is taking its fan experience to the next level. Players will have to learn to deal with chanting and cheering because of a new rule that allows fans to be as vocal as they would be at a basketball, baseball or football game. The rule was put into effect to generate excitement at matches and help draw bigger crowds. Officially, the rule is called the Big 12 Tennis Decorum Policy. It went into effect during the 2015 spring season, and it states that “spectators are to behave under the same principles/ guidelines of other sports. Fans can now have an outstanding impact on key matches this season.” Many conferences, including the Big 12, have already changed the rules of the game in order to attract more fans and keep them in their seats by shortening matches with no-ad scoring (at deuce, the net point wins the game). “I think it’s great that the Big 12 is stepping up and leading the charge,” Lisac stated. “In my opinion, the rules have not changed, because college tennis has always been a more cheerful environment than professional tennis. “I think it’s great that the Big 12 has finally put it on paper. I think fans are still unclear that they can be loud and support their team in a respective manner. With these rules in ink, they can mimic other college sports. The fans can feel like they are a part of the match now.”

Senior Hailey Barrett

A NATIVE OF Lansing, Michigan, Barrett is the lone senior on the team. In three seasons, Barrett has played primarily at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles position. Last spring, Barrett tallied a 20-win season (singles/doubles) with an overall record of 22-22. She tallied eight wins at the No. 2 singles slot, and scored a win against Baylor’s then-ranked No. 82 Rachael James-Baker, marking her first victory of the season over a ranked opponent on March 27. “Hailey has grown tremendously in the last two years,” Lisac noted. “Unfortunately, she has been dealing with some injury issues, so she hasn’t been able to perform at her best yet. It looks like this semester will be her best year yet, and we are very excited about it. “Regardless of the fact that she hasn’t been able to perform at her best, she has been that steady part of the team. She is always setting an example and doing the right things.” A sport management major, Barrett was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team her freshman year and landed on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team the last two seasons. At the end of her junior campaign, Barrett was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete and was selected to participate in the 2015 NCAA Career in Sports Forum. She also was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s and Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll during each semester of play. “Hailey has been the rock of this program,” Lisac explained. “It is unfortunate that she is a senior, but at the same time, I have been very happy with the way she has progressed on and off the court. She is prepared for life after being a part of this program, which is one of the major things that I always look at it.”

Year in Review THE WEST VIRGINIA University women’s tennis squad concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 overall record. The Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010, and marked its 450th program win at Toledo on Jan. 31. “There are a lot of positives we can pull from last season,” said coach Miha Lisac. “We made good progress on the tennis courts. In the first part of the season, we had a nine-match win streak and put some good wins under our belt. We competed well against Big 12 opponents and gave ourselves good opportunities to be successful.” The Mountaineers competed against nine-ranked opponents last season, as they played in arguably one of the toughest conferences in the country. It was a rough start, as WVU opened its 2015 spring season against then-ranked No. 31 Ohio State and dropped a 7-0 decision. The Mountaineers continued to put forth the effort and won back-to-back-to-back matches on the road, followed by six-consecutive victories at home at Ridgeview Racquet Club. As the season progressed, WVU fell to nonconference opponent Cornell, 4-3, to snap its nine-match winning streak on March 7. West Virginia jumped out to an early advantage after winning the doubles point, but could not hold on in singles play to secure the win for the Mountaineers. On March 12, WVU opened Big 12 Conference play and dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker decision at Iowa State. Sophomore Kaja Mrgole picked up West Virginia’s first match point at the No. 1 position, as she dominated ISU’s Samantha Budai in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) to win eight of her last nine singles matches. With their last five opponents ranked in the nation’s Top-40, the Mountaineers faced several challenges toward the end of the season. Arguably its best match of the year, WVU gave then-ranked No. 7 Baylor all they could handle, but ultimately fell short, 4-3, at home on March 27. Junior Hailey Barrett tied the match at three-all and rolled on to a straight set win at the No. 2 slot against BU’s then-No. 82 Rachael James-Baker (6-3, 7-5), making that her first victory over a ranked opponent last season. In its regular-season finale, West Virginia celebrated the career of lone senior Ikttesh Chahal against then-ranked No. 10 Oklahoma State at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. Chahal represented West Virginia University well both on and off the court.

Tennis

On the court, Chahal’s career dual record in singles stands at 24-51, while her doubles dual record stands at 29-44. Her overall career record in singles is 35-82. Chahal was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team each of the last three seasons (2013-15) and was honored as the 2014 ITA Scholar Athlete. Three other Mountaineers’ earned Big 12 distinctions. Freshman Lyn Yuen Choo and Barrett were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Mrgole landed on the second team. The squad was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year, and Barrett was tabbed as an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the 2015 season. “In the classroom, we had a good fall and spring semester. We averaged a 3.59 GPA throughout the spring semester, and we are looking forward to making strides in our academic work,” Lisac explained. West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 4-0 loss to then-No. 41 Oklahoma in the first round of the 2015 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship in Waco, Texas, on April 23. “We have taken very good steps forward. We have developed good leadership within the program and the freshmen have adjusted well in the team building process,” Lisac stated. Freshman Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20-singles wins in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record. Freshman Habiba Shaker, Lewis, Choo and Chahal each tallied a 30-win season (singles/doubles) with a 34-14, 35-21, 30-15 and 31-29 overall records, respectively. Three Mountaineers also recorded a 20-win season (singles/ doubles), as freshman Yvon Martinez tallied a 26-30 overall record, followed by Barrett (22-22) and Mrgole with a 25-37 overall record. “So far, we have taken the steps forward in order to build a competitive Big 12 program, and we are looking forward to taking the necessary steps,” Lisac stated. “We have to continue to bring talent to the program, through recruiting, as well as better prepare ourselves on and off the courts with the talent we already have in place.” With two years under his belt, coach Lisac is confident in the direction that the team is heading, and he knows exactly what kind of talent the program needs to possess in order to reach its goals. With only one senior departing, the squad has much to look forward to in 2016.

Established in 1989, this award is given by the coaching staff to a team member in recognition for one’s outstanding contributions to the team. This award is given to the individual who best exemplifies enthusiasm, encouragement and support for her teammates on the court, as well as off the court.

Jane Little Memorial Award

This award, a silver bowl donated by the West Virginia University Foundation, is given each year to a member on the women’s tennis team who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and team spirit. Jane Little, a Charleston, West Virginia, native, was a member of the first women’s intercollegiate team to compete for WVU. Jane was not the best tennis player on the team, but she displayed the best sportsmanship and was the most dedicated. When she died in October, 1977, her teammates from the 1973-74 team established this award in her memory.

E.GORDON Gee PRESIDENT

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the University’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1981, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (200107). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Gee has served on several educationgovernance organizations and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents, the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education

Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission. And in March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is the Medicaid Medical Director for the State of Louisiana, and an assistant professor of Public Health and Medicine at Louisiana State University. She is also a Norman F. Gant/American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/IOM Anniversary Fellow. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón, and they have five children.

SHANELyons DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

West Virginia native Shane Lyons was named director of Intercollegiate Athletics and associate vice president at West Virginia University in January 2015. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction with Alabama athletic directors – the late Mal Moore and current athletic director Bill Battle. At WVU, Lyons has oversight of 18 varsity sports, a department budget of approximately $80 million, 220 employees, approximately 450 studentathletes and a facilities master plan that included the opening of a $21 million baseball park and more $75 million to modernize other athletic venues in the next three years. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, daily monitoring of compliance and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. He also was a member and served as chairman on many prominent committees within the NCAA Governance structure during his tenure with the ACC. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of the 25 membership service representatives. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg

High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. He and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron, 16, and Brooke, 12. Lyons is the University’s 12th athletic director.

Directions to Mountaineer Tennis Courts From Pittsburgh, Pa.: From Pittsburgh take I-79 toward Washington, Pa. Merge onto I-79 3 via EXIT 21 Morgantown crossing into West Virginia. Take EXIT 155 toward West Virginia University WV-7. Turn left onto CR-19/24 N/Chaplin Hill Road. CR-19/24 N/Chaplin Hill Road becomes US-19/WV-7/Jerry West Blvd./ Monongahela Blvd. Continue across the Star City Bridge and through one traffic light. The WVU athletic complex is located on the right at the top of the hill and the Mountaineer Tennis Courts are located behind the new basketball practice facility to the left of the basketball arena. From Washington, D.C.: From Washington, D.C. take I-270 N toward Frederick, Md. Merge onto I-70 W via EXIT 32 toward Hagerstown, Md. Merge onto I-68 W via EXIT 1A on the left toward Cumberland, Md., crossing into West Virginia. Take EXIT 7 toward WV-705/Airport/Pierpont Road. Follow signs to stadium. At the second traffic light off the interstate, turn left and travel up Eaton Hill. Travel through two more traffic lights and turn right on Route 705 and remain on 705 until it becomes Chestnut Ridge Road (two more lights).
