RIFLE

Home to one of the country’s most tradition-rich programs, the WVU rifle range is a reflection of the long-term success enjoyed by the 19-time national champion Mountaineers. A unique aspect of the range is the ability for shooters to work simultaneously. Team members can shoot in the smallbore position at the 50 foot targets while others can shoot at the 10m air rifle targets at the same time

MAKING GOOD ON A PROMISE PUT IN PLACE UPON HIS HIRING, JON HAMMOND, A NATIVE OF ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, HAS RETURNED THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY RIFLE TEAM TO NATIONAL GLORY, IMPLEMENTING A STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS THAT HAS SEEN SIX NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NINE SEASONS, NINE INDIVIDUAL NCAA TITLES, EIGHT CONSECUTIVE GREAT AMERICA RIFLE CONFERENCE (GARC) CHAMPIONSHIPS, FOUR UNDEFEATED SEASONS, 126 ALL-AMERICA HONORS AND 11 CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITIONS. ADDITIONALLY, HAMMOND HAS OVERSEEN THE CAREERS OF MULTIPLE OLYMPIANS, INCLUDING 2016 GOLD MEDALISTS GINNY THRASHER AND NICCO CAMPRIANI. THE 2016-17 SEASON

Even before Hammond’s 11th season with the Mountaineers began, the WVU rifle program was thrust into the spotlight, as rising sophomore Ginny Thrasher (United States) and alum Nicco Campriani (Italy) combined for three Gold medals at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. Thrasher claimed the first Gold of the Games, winning the women’s 10m air rifle, while Campriani, a 2011 graduate, won gold in the men’s 10m air rifle and 50m 3 positions. Fueled by the summer success, the Mountaineers deftly navigated their season on the strength of four returning letterwinners and three skilled freshmen and claimed their nation-best 19th NCAA National Championship. WVU earned its fifth straight national title with a championship-record 4723 score, shot March 10-11, at Ohio State’s French Field House. The team score was 17 shots better than runner-up TCU. WVU swept the discipline titles for the third time in four years, finishing with marks of 2336 smallbore and 2387 air rifle. The team’s five-peat was the third in the sport since 1980. Freshmen Morgan Phillips and Milica Babic won the smallbore and air rifle titles, respectively, marking the second straight season WVU rookies claimed the individual championships. Six different Mountaineers have claimed NCAA titles under Hammond. Following the championship, five Mountaineers earned a combined 14 All-America honors, and Phillips was named the NCAA Championships’ Top Performer. The Mountaineers finished the season at 12-0, the program’s second straight undefeated season and the team’s third unblemished mark in four years. The squad then claimed its eighth straight GARC Championship with a 4725 total. Thrasher, the 2017 GARC air rifle champion, was named the GARC Shooter of the Year, while Babic claimed the GARC Rookie of the Year honor. Hammond also was named the GARC Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career.

RIFLE

Junior Elizabeth Gratz led the Mountaineers academically, as she became the first WVU rifle student-athlete to earn the NCAA Elite 90 Award. She also was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team, while Thrasher was named to the second team. Gratz was the fourth Mountaineer in program history to receive a first-team honor. WVU has had at least one honoree in each of the last eight seasons.

The 2015-16 Season

A combination of senior leadership and rookie skill helped the Mountaineers push their NCAA title streak to four straight with a commanding performance at the 2016 NCAA Championship, as WVU shot 4703 for its 18th title in Akron, Ohio. For only the second time under Hammond, WVU won the NCAA smallbore and air rifle titles, shooting 2338 smallbore and 2365

air rifle. Additionally, Thrasher became the first freshman in NCAA history, and the first since Mountaineer Petra Zublasing did so in 2013, to sweep the individual titles, winning air rifle and smallbore. The Mountaineers also earned 20 All-America honors. WVU’s build-up to the NCAA victory was nothing short of spectacular, as the squad completed an undefeated 12-0 season and won its seventh straight GARC title with a 4702 showing. Thrasher, the GARC Rookie of the Year, captured the conference smallbore title, and Garrett Spurgeon was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Additionally, Hammond was named the GARC Coach of the Year for the third time. The Mountaineers were particularly stunning in a win over Akron, as the squad shot an NCAA-record 4740 mark. WVU also tallied NCAA records in smallbore (2352) and air rifle (2388).

2012-15 Seasons

The Mountaineers extended their NCAA title streak to three straight with a comeback victory at the 2015 NCAA Championships, scoring 4702 and winning their nation-best 17th title in Fairbanks, Alaska. Down 12 points entering the final day of competition, having shot 2319 in smallbore, WVU overcame the deficit with a 2383 air rifle score. Three Mountaineers finished on the air rifle podium, including NCAA Champion Maren Prediger. Michael Bamsey placed second, and Spurgeon finished third. WVU won its sixth straight GARC title with a 4709 showing at the conference championships. Spurgeon finished first in air rifle, while Ziva Dvorsak was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Gratz was named the GARC Rookie of the Year. The Mountaineers finished the year with 23 All-America honors and 28 AllGARC awards. Hammond was named the Rifle Winter 2015 CaptainU Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Despite the graduation of three-time NCAA Champion Petra Zublasing, the Mountaineers did not skip a beat in 2013-14, as Hammond led the Mountaineers to their second straight National Championship and a perfect 10-0 record. Ranked No. 1 for the majority of the season, there was little doubt WVU would successfully defend its national title, as the team owned a 17-shot lead after the first day of competition, winning its first smallbore title under Hammond with a 2338 score. The Mountaineers secured the NCAA title with a first place, 2367 air rifle score, giving them a two-day total of 4705. Three Mountaineers shot in each discipline final, with Prediger and Spurgeon finishing second in air rifle and smallbore, respectively. Prior to the team’s national title victory, the squad scored its fifth straight GARC championship, shooting 4700. Prediger won the GARC air rifle title, and the Mountaineers claimed 14 All-GARC honors. WVU collected 14 All-America honors, and Hammond was named the Rifle Winter 2014 CaptainU Coach of the Year. Thomas Kyanko also was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Second Team. Hammond rallied his 2012-13 squad around 2012 Olympian Zublasing and a core of young, talented shooters. The Mountaineers navigated a difficult schedule and earned the program’s second National Championship in five years.

Tasked with maintaining the Mountaineers’ level of success with a young team recovering from the loss of seven seniors, Hammond rose to the challenge in 2011-12. Nationally ranked in the top three all year, WVU bounced back from a regular-season loss to Kentucky to grab its third straight GARC title. The Mountaineers, winners of the GARC Sportsmanship Award, also won the air rifle title and were paced by Zublasing, the discipline champion and GARC Shooter of the Year. Additionally, Kyanko was named the GARC Rookie of the Year, and the squad earned 12 All-GARC honors. The team, boasting a 12-2 record, including a 5-1 mark in conference action, advanced to the NCAA Championships for the sixth straight season and placed sixth. Zublasing won the air rifle title, becoming the second Mountaineer to win the discipline title in as many years. As a team, WVU finished second in air rifle and eighth in smallbore. Following the national championships, six Mountaineers earned eight NRA AllAmerica honors, including first team air rifle and smallbore marks for Zublasing, while Hammond was named the NRA Distinguished College Coach for the second time. Leading a team that boasted seven seniors, five of whom comprised his first Mountaineer recruiting class, the 2010-11 season was another championship year for Hammond. Though narrowly edged by GARC rival Kentucky at the 2011 NCAA Rifle Championships, the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout the season, won the air rifle team title and finished second overall in smallbore. Additionally, Nicco Campriani won the NCAA air rifle title, the first WVU shooter to earn a national championship since 1997. Campriani also finished second in the smallbore competition. All told, the Mountaineers earned a combined five top-five air rifle and smallbore finishes, and six shooters scored eight NRA AllAmerica honors. Posting an 11-2 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark, the Mountaineers successfully defended their GARC title and also swept the air rifle and smallbore titles. WVU was the first conference team to repeat as champions since Nebraska (2006, ’07). Campriani, the individual air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion, was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Hammond coached a talented, upperclass-laden squad to an 11-0 record in 2010, the team’s first undefeated season since 2001, and a GARC regularseason title. The Mountaineers followed their unblemished regular season with a win at the GARC Championships and a sweep of the discipline titles. The victory was the program’s fourth overall and first since 2000. At his first GARC Championships, transfer Campriani won the smallbore, air rifle and combined score titles, and the Mountaineers earned 18 All-GARC honors, including eight first-team awards. Hammond was named the GARC Coach of the Year, his second distinction in three seasons. WVU concluded the 2010 campaign with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships; the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation for the majority of the season, finished third in smallbore and fifth in air rifle. WVU placed two in the smallbore finals, and following the championships, seven student-athletes earned 12 All-America honors.

Ranked No. 1 nationally throughout the duration of the season, the Mountaineers overcame a one-shot smallbore deficit and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships en route to winning the air rifle team title and bringing the National Championship trophy back to Morgantown for a nation-best 15th time.

The Early Years Hammond made a name for himself in the coaching ranks in 2009, as he took a young, rising WVU squad to the NCAA Championships and returned with the program’s 14th trophy.

Zublasing was instrumental in securing WVU’s victory, as she swept the individual titles and earned the tag as the CRCA Shooter of the Match. She became the first shooter to win both NCAA titles at one championship since 2001, and the second WVU student-athlete to win three career national titles in any sport.

A season that was built on momentum, WVU went 11-1 overall, earned its first No. 1 CRCA ranking in over a decade, had seven student-athletes earn

Hammond was named the CRCA Coach of the Year, his second career honor. WVU scored 12 NRA All-America honors, including seven combined firstteam accolades. WVU also won its fourth straight GARC title. Zublasing was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year, and Spurgeon earned the GARC Rookie of the Year honor.

NRA All-America honors, improved its GARC standing and finished second at the league championship, captured the nation’s air rifle championship and won the aforementioned NCAA title. The Mountaineers’ 2009 national-title run was especially noteworthy given the pressure the team overcame. After a poor smallbore showing on the championships’ first day, WVU found itself in sixth place. Hammond’s team regrouped and put forth a strong air rifle showing, with all four competitors finishing in the top 10. Additionally, Hammond’s squad was strong at the 2009 GARC Championships, as Tommy Santelli finished first overall, second in air rifle and fifth in smallbore.

In total, WVU had seven top-10 finishes between the two disciplines. For his efforts all season, Hammond earned his first CRCA Coach of the Year honor. In only his second year as head coach, Hammond led the 2007-08 rifle squad to an 8-3 record, a third-place finish at the GARC Championships and a sixthplace standing at the NCAA Championships, the Mountaineers’ first appearance in six seasons. Hammond guided five Mountaineers to NRA smallbore All-America honors that season and also earned individual recognition, as he was named the GARC Coach of the Year and listed as the 2008 NRA Distinguished College Coach. Hammond took over the Mountaineer rifle program upon the retirement of longtime coach Marsha Beasley in 2006. That season, he guided the 2006-07 team to its first winning record (6-4) since 2003.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

A strong proponent for achievement at the range and in the classroom, Hammond’s shooters have proven to be well-rounded student-athletes. Since his arrival in the fall of 2006, 64 Mountaineers have earned a spot on the annual CRCA All-Academic Honor List, including a program-best eight studentathletes in 2015 and 2016. The Mountaineers also have been well represented on the annual CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Teams, with at least one student-athlete earning an honor in each of the last eight seasons. Gratz became the fourth Mountaineer to earn a first-team acco lade in 2017, as she was named to the Women’s At-Large First Team. Thrasher landed on the women’s second team, and sophomore Will Anti earned a men’s all-district award. Gratz also was honored by the NCAA in 2017, as she claimed the program’s first NCAA Elite 90 Award. The honor is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Responsible for restoring the glory and tradition to the storied WVU rifle program, Hammond has recruited not only elite athletes to compete in the Gold and Blue, but he also has continued to teach and foster his team’s talents so each student-athlete is a stronger competitor upon graduation. Athletic accolades and recognitions go hand-in-hand with such advancements. The Mountaineers have earned a combined 126 All-America honors, including 59 first-team recognitions, since Hammond became head coach. The 2015 National Champion team earned 23 All-America honors, a program-high under Hammond. Following a four-year drought, five Mountaineers scored five All-America honors in 2008, including first-team recognition for Lafe Kunkel and Brandi Eskew. Hammond’s leadership also propels the Mountaineers toward fruitful futures. Four Mountaineers competed at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, including 2016 NCAA champion Thrasher, who won the first Gold medal of the games with a victory for the United States in the women’s 10m air rifle. Additionally, Campriani pushed his individual Olympic medal count to four with Gold-Medal showings in the men’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 positions. He previously won Gold in the men’s 50m 3 positions and Silver in the men’s 10m air rifle at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons, 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist Ginny Thrasher and Coach Jon Hammond

Four Mountaineers competed at the 2014 ISSF World Championships, including a USA Junior Team invite for Spurgeon. Additionally, Bryant Wallizer was invited to train at the US Olympic Training Center immediately following his 2010 graduation.

PRIOR TO COACHING AT WVU

ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Hammond then journeyed to West Virginia to spend the 2002-03 season competing for the WVU rifle team while working toward his master’s degree in sport management. Hammond returned to Morgantown in 2006 and began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with the Mountaineers.

In addition to his busy coaching schedule, Hammond competed for more than a decade for the Great Britain National Team. Hammond started shooting when he was nine years old. As a junior, Hammond won both domestic and international honors, highlighted by the 50m rifle prone World Junior Champion title in Barcelona in 1998. Hammond has competed in a wealth of senior international competitions since then, including the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics representing Great Britain. He also has competed in numerous ISSF World Cups throughout the world as well as the last two ISSF World Championships in 2010 and 2014. One of his highlights was representing Scotland at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, where he became the most successful Scottish Athlete in a single Commonwealth Games, winning four medals – two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze.

RIFLE

Hammond earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Leeds while competing for its rifle team.

In addition to his highly successful career as a shooter, Hammond also has volunteered his time to help others. While a member of the Leeds squad, he helped coach beginning shooters and assisted the team with organizational tasks. Hammond also helped initiate Blind Shooting in Scotland with his father. He worked closely with a group from the Grampian Society for the Blind to teach basic rifle techniques. He gave the shooters positional and mental advice and undertook the task of raising funds for all of the equipment, as well as organizing a venue to hold the club’s matches. Hammond is married to the former Lindsay Brooke. They have three sons: Lewis and twins, Hugh and Archie.

ONE-ON-ONE

with COACH HAMMOND As has been the case for the last few years, your team enters the season as the reigning National Champions. How does the 2017-18 squad handle that pressure? I think we have to do a lot of the same stuff we have been over the years. We need to hit the reset button and start from zero again. It’s something you have to do, and it’s something we’ve been able to do successfully. I think restarting at the beginning of a new season has played a large role in our success each year. This is a new team. We lost our captain from last year (Jean-Pierre Lucas), but we have a few new team members. We have a new graduate assistant in Soren Butler. It will be a different feel, and that will translate into a fresh start for us. We have to make the focus about us and not other teams.

We need to try and continue to grow as a team. Last season, I think we grew as a team throughout the year. I think we can continue to build off that growth. It’s a similar group. We need to continue to grow those bonds and continue to work together. The performance side will take care of itself. We won’t look to shoot certain scores or have specific results. We just want to continue to improve as individuals and as an overall team. Our situation is pretty unique. Since I’ve been the head coach at WVU, we’ve never had three individual NCAA champions on the team at one time, and this season we have junior Ginny Thrasher (2016 NCAA air rifle and smallbore champion) and sophomores Milica Babic (2017 NCAA air rifle champion) and Morgan Phillips (2017 NCAA smallbore champion). That’s a unique aspect to have.

We will have great competition within the team – they will push each other on a daily basis. The same with the new shooters joining us this season. Everyone is training against the best shooters in the country. Anyone who has a goal to shoot beyond college, there are opportunities here at WVU to improve and grow as an athlete. We have to find ways to make this the best team it can be this year. The 2017-18 schedule features eight teams who finished within the top-10 nationally last year, including 2017 National Runner-Up TCU and third-place finisher Murray State. You also will face GARC foe Kentucky in Morgantown and travel to Alaska-Fairbanks in January. How will this schedule challenge and prepare the Mountaineers for the postseason? It’s important for this team to compete against the nation’s best teams. It’s something we always want to do so we are best prepared for the end of the season. I think this year’s schedule shapes up great. We have a busy fall, and we will shoot about two more matches than we typically would in the fall semester. We’re going to be shooting some tough matches early in the season. We have TCU here in October, and we will shoot at Murray State in November. They will again be two of the top teams this year. Our spring season will be just as tough, with Kentucky shooting here and our trip to Alaska. In addition to these tough matches, there are always teams who seem to rise as the year goes on. The Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) will be a challenging conference this season. Teams are going to continue to keep pushing and improving. Getting down to The Citadel for our season opener is important, as we’ll return in March for the NCAA Championships. We’re also very excited to host the GARC Championships in February. We haven’t hosted a championship in more than 15 seasons. This match will provide us with a lot of benefits. Not only do we get the opportunity to be a great host and put on a first-class championship, but the championship also will serve as a dry-run for the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships. The WVU Athletics Department is making a big commitment to rifle this year, and we’re very appreciative of the efforts. I think all the extra work will be well worth it. All-American Elizabeth Gratz returns as the lone senior for the 2017-18 season and will serve as the team captain. What type of leadership are you expecting from Elizabeth?

Coach JonHAMMOND with senior team captain ElizabethGratz.

We only had one senior last season in Jean-Pierre Lucas. Seniors become natural team leaders. I think it’s going to be a great challenge for Elizabeth this year, but I think she’s every excited to take on the role. She sets a great example for the team in everything she does. Inside of the range or out, she’s a hard worker.

Leadership qualities evolve over time. I think Elizabeth will learn a lot over the course of the season, and I expect her to become a stronger leader as the year progresses. It’s harder when you’re the only senior, but I think she’s looking forward to the challenge. I think she’s excited to show her teammates what it means to be a WVU rifle team member. Two talented newcomers join the team this season in redshirt-freshman David Koenders and freshman Sarah Osborn. What are your expectations for the duo? We’re really excited for Sarah and David to join the team. As a coach, I try not to place expectations on them, except for them to come in and be great team members. Sarah has a lot of experience. She’s been shooting at a high level in the United States for a number of years, and she’s already competed at several matches for the US Junior National Team. She also has attended our camps over the years, so we know a lot about her. We know Sarah has a great work ethic, and she will be very coachable. She is excited to embrace the college athlete experience. I think Sarah has a ton of potential, and she is coming in to a good situation. We are a strong team, and she won’t be relied upon for our team’s success. This will allow her to ease into college life without pressure on her shoulders. I’m looking forward to working with her as a coach. David will have similar experiences as Sarah, but everything will be slightly different as he’s an international student-athlete. He also brings a lot of experience with him, especially having just competed at the World Junior Championships. He’s one of the top junior shooters coming out of Germany, and he has the opportunity to come in and have an immediate impact on our team, similar to Milica last year. There will be an adjustment phase for him as well, though I think having one full year of University experience in Germany will help him a lot. I think he’s looking forward to the challenge.

will create time challenges. There will be times when some of our shooters will miss periods of school because of qualifying matches and national matches. I think they’re all accustom to that. They are all great students, and they will find a good balance. I think international matches provide a great distraction. The athletes learn a lot when they compete overseas in the summer. They gain new experiences, and that’s an important part of the sport. It’s something I enjoyed as an athlete – traveling, visiting new countries, witnessing different cultures and competing in events against the best shooters in the world. All of that is important. I’m very conscious of what our athletes want to achieve, and I do everything I can to help them prepare. I’ve navigated many different situations over the years. The championships will be very exciting next summer. It will be the official kickoff to the 2020 Summer Olympics. We’re looking forward to it. A big pillar for this program is academic success. How do your student-athletes succeed on the range and in the classroom? It’s tough. It takes a commitment to doing your best. A strong work ethic is obviously important. I think good time management skills and being organized enough to plan your days and weeks helps, too. You have to use your resources, too – the academic support staff, tutor sessions and your teammates can push you toward your academic goals. Ultimately, these student-athletes are determined and driven, and they want to succeed academically. They are all self-motivated. Being a college athlete in any

sport is a challenge. Hard work brings great rewards. You have to be willing to make sacrifices. If you are willing to put the hard work in, you will succeed. Your team will shoot on a new mobile range this season. What does that resource bring to the program, and how will it help this team further its success? Having the new mobile range for matches will be awesome. It will really enhance the match-day experience for the student-athletes and the spectators. It’s ultimately going to grow our sport within the WVU community, the region and the state. This mobile range represents this program’s forward movement. We’re going to continue to push forward and explore how we can continue to better this program and the student-athlete experience. For me, that’s always been a big priority. I’m motivated by constant improvement, whether it’s directly in the range, with equipment or with our facility. This mobile range is a huge step for us in the right direction. We’re creating a different home event for this program, and the mobile range comes with a lot of benefits. We will host the Great America Rifle Conference Championships this February, and we will host the 2019 NCAA Championships next March. Additionally, we now have the chance to better prepare for postseason, as most championships are now shot on these types of mobile ranges in large venues. This is a huge benefit for us – shooting in this type of an environment will become the norm for this program.

Both Sarah and David will be great fits with our team – they are hard-working, laid back and great people. How will your student-athletes use this season to prepare themselves for the 2018 ISSF World Shooting Championships? I think it’s exciting that a few of our athletes will be preparing this season for such a big match. There’s more to this sport than just NCAA rifle. You have to manage goals. WVU rifle and being a good teammate always come first. Then, we work to integrate individual goals into that overall picture. We need to make sure our student-athletes can achieve everything they want to, and they can achieve their goals more easily with the support of a team. This

Preview

Mountaineers Look to Continue Streak

For the fifth straight season, the West Virginia University rifle team returns to competition as the reigning NCAA National Champion. The Mountaineers claimed the 2017 title with a championship record 4723 on March 11, in Columbus, Ohio. Four of the five Mountaineers who shot for WVU at the 2017 NCAA National Championships return, including reigning smallbore champion Morgan Phillips and reigning air rifle champion Milica Babic. Also back for WVU are junior Ginny Thrasher, who finished second in smallbore and seventh in air rifle, and senior Elizabeth Gratz, who finished in fifth place in air rifle.

The WVU rifle program owns a nation-best 19 NCAA Championships and has won six titles under 12-year coach Jon Hammond. The Mountaineers last won six straight NCAA titles from 1988-93. Alaska-Fairbanks is the only other program to win six straight championships (1999-04). WVU opens the 2017-18 season as the nation’s No. 1 team, as the Mountaineers sit atop the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Preseason Poll.

Team to Face Weekly Tests

The Mountaineers’ 2017-18 schedule will be one of the team’s hardest under coach Hammond, as WVU is set to shoot against eight of the teams ranked in the CRCA Preseason Poll.

RIFLE

Following its season-opening match against No. 9 NC State on Sept. 23 at The Citadel’s Inouye Marksmanship Center in Charleston, South Carolina, the squad will open its home season at the WVU Rifle Range against No. 5 Ohio State on Sept. 30. Also included in the team’s fall schedule is a home match against No. 2 TCU, the 2017 NCAA Runner-Up, on Nov. 4, and a match at No. 3 Murray State on Nov. 21. The Racers finished third at the 2017 NCAA Championships. The Mountaineers open their spring slate at Akron on Jan. 14 before traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska, for matches against Mississippi and No. 7 Alaska-Fairbanks on Jan. 20-21. The squad concludes its spring season against No. 4 Kentucky on Feb. 11, in Morgantown. Unique to this season, the eight-time reigning conference champions will host the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships Feb. 23-25. Junior Ginny Thrasher is the reigning GARC air rifle champion. She was named the 2017 GARC Shooter of the Year, while sophomore Milica Babic was named the GARC Outstanding Rookie. WVU will shoot for its 20th NCAA Championship March 9-10 at The Citadel.

Trio of Champs Sets Standard

The 2017-18 WVU rifle team boasts three individual NCAA National Champions among its returners – junior

Ginny Thrasher (2016 smallbore and air rifle) and sophomores Morgan Phillips (2017 smallbore) and Milica Babic (2017 air rifle). Mountaineer freshmen shooters have swept the individual NCAA titles each of the last two seasons, and a Mountaineer has won the last three straight NCAA air rifle titles (Babic, Thrasher and Maren Prediger in 2015). WVU shooters have swept the NCAA individual titles five times since 1992. Twenty different Mountaineer shooters have claimed 27 National Championships since 1961.

Gratz Ready to Lead

Senior Elizabeth Gratz will serve as the team captain for the 2017-18 season. A native of Sigel, Illinois, she is a nine-time All-American. Gratz sets the standard in the range and in the classroom. Last season, she shot an NCAA- and school-record 600 air rifle at Kentucky on Feb. 11, becoming the third Mountaineer in program history to attain the perfect mark. At season end, she also earned the Elite 90 Award for NCAA Division I Rifle, given to the studentathlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships. Additionally, she was named to the CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica Women’s At-Large First Team.

The West Virginia University rifle team ended its 2016-17 season with its fifth straight, nation-best 19th national title at the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championships, held on March 10-11, at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Holding an undefeated regular-season record (12-0, 8-0 GARC), the Mountaineers also captured the program’s eighth straight Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) title with a total score of 4725 on Feb. 25, at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.

The success of the 2016-17 season was a combination of goals set by the team, a positive mindset and a work ethic that was unmatched. “It’s hard to say if you ever met all of your goals, but I think we did a great job to the best of our abilities,” Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said.

MOUNTAINEER MOMENTUM: NCAA FIVE-PEAT

The Mountaineers delivered a world-class performance at the 2017 NCAA Championships with a championship-record score of 4723. The Mountaineers also shot a victorious air rifle score of 2387 the following day. With an aggregate score of 4723, the Mountaineers captured the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championship title.

Freshmen Morgan Phillips and Milica Babic, sophomore Ginny Thrasher, junior Elizabeth Gratz and senior Jean-Pierre Lucas represented the counting team for WVU at the 2017 NCAA Championships. Phillips dominated the smallbore competition and captured a first-place finish with a score of 589 and a finals score of 464.3. The 2017 NCAA Championship win was the sixth under Hammond. The WVU rifle team is the only program in school history to win an NCAA title.

A SENIOR SEND-OFF

Lucas led the Mountaineers as the senior captain and was a member of the program for five years.

Dr. Raymond Prior, one of the program’s sport psychologists, assisted the team through the mental aspects of the sport.

“This season we focused on our team and our team only,” Lucas said. “We tried to put in the work and all of the little things that we needed to do to get to where we wanted to be as a team.”

The team created a mission to focus not only on outcome-based goals, but also goals that are non-outcome based.

Lucas shot an aggregate score of 1168 at the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championships, scoring 580 in smallbore and 588 in air rifle.

“Many things in our team mission this year were not really measurable,” Hammond added. “Overall, I’d have to say the year was successful not just in the outcomes we had, but also in the growth of the team as well. The attitude definitely changed, but that’s what made this year so special.”

“Coach Hammond has such a wealth of knowledge, and he does everything to his fullest,” Lucas added. “He’s always supporting us, and it’s easier to shoot and compete when you know you have coaches supporting you.”

PRESIDENT

E. GORDON Gee, Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having served as president of some of the most prestigious public and private universities for more than three decades. When he returned to lead West Virginia University in 2014 as the institution’s 24th president, it was a homecoming of sorts. He was first named WVU president in 1981 at age 36 – at the time, among the youngest persons to ever serve as a university president. He led WVU until 1985 when he went on to presidencies at the University of Colorado (1985-90), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990-97 and again from 2007-13. On his return to the Morgantown campus, he said, “This is not a job to me; it is a calling.” His leadership style bears that out as he works tirelessly to advance the University’s land-grant mission and open doors to the American dream. In his latest address to the University community, he noted that for 150 years, the institution has been a polar star guiding West Virginians toward a brighter tomorrow. He said, “That is why, in this milestone year, we recommit our University to living the values that drive our work. Serving our students and our state is not just our duty — it is our passion.” Gee has built a special relationship with the students as well as the state’s citizens, making it a point to visit students where they live, learn and socialize -- and visiting all 55 West Virginia counties during his inaugural year -- and at least half in subsequent years. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the WVU College of Law, and, in 1981, was named WVU’s 19th president. Gee has served on several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Gee is serving as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he is on the executive committee of the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees and serves on the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization, as well as on the board of trustees of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain, with which WVU has a long-standing academic partnership. A recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, he is an executive board member of Boy Scouts of America. He has also served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Limited Brands.

In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-12, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission. Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. In the summer of 2016, Gee announced his engagement to Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. In addition to that role, she is a practicing gynecologist and Gratis Faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

SHANE Lyons

The 2017-18 season is Shane Lyons’ third full year as director of athletics at West Virginia University. If the next year is anything like the previous two, the Mountaineer athletics story will be full of positive results and continued success. In year two, Lyons put the finishing touches, to rave reviews, on $23 million in renovations to the WVU Coliseum, while $50 million in renovations and fan enhancements to Milan Puskar Stadium finished in August 2017. Lyons is always on the go, focusing his energy daily on the betterment of more than 500 student-athletes. His open lines of communications have made him a popular role model for WVU athletes, and his honest, fair and caring approach has energized an athletic department that turned in record results in 2017. Under Lyons’ leadership, 2017 was one of the best in WVU history. Six teams were nationally ranked, football turned in a 10-win season, women’s soccer played for the national championship and had the Hermann Trophy winner, men’s basketball reached the Sweet 16, women’s basketball won the Big 12 championship and rifle won its 19th national championship. Overall, the Mountaineers registered in 24 All-Americans, 104 all-conference performers, 20 academic award winners, 121 academic all-conference selections, 10 Olympians, one Olympic gold medalist and two silver medalists. Overseeing 18 varsity sports, a self-sustaining department budget of more than $90 million and more than 200 employees, Lyons’ tireless efforts in the coming year will be geared toward getting started on a new $45 million aquatic and track center in Morgantown, and a continued focus, on the growth and cultivation of the more than $23 million in fundraising efforts brought in by the Mountaineer Athletic Club. He will also direct phase two of the Coliseum renovations, which will bring the building up to ADA seating code, and for the first-time ever, Milan Puskar Stadium will have two video boards to improve in fan entertainment and information. While some outside observers may think that he is a behind-the-scenes guy, the people who count will tell you that Lyons is a results-oriented leader who has his finger on the pulse and is a positive influence on the entire department. His work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team, as well as the Big 12 Conference and other national committees has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He currently serves on the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee. Also in 2017-18, Lyons will chair the overall athletic directors committee for the Big 12. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction of the Crimson Tide Athletic program. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, management of the day-to-day operations of the department and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events,

including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of the 25 membership service representatives. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Lyons, the University’s 12th athletic director, and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke.
