Conference
BIG 12
The Big 12 Conference celebrates its 21st year as it continues to promote the strength and success of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of fifth-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 Conference, comprised of 10 members, remains the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. West Virginia and TCU joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 37 million people. More than 4,200 student-athletes from across the United States and around the world compete annually in the sports sponsored by the conference. Whether on the field, in the classroom or in the community, student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the Big 12 can boast 54 NCAA team titles and 587 individual National Championships. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

“THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE IS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST CONFERENCES IN THE NATION, AND WE COMPETE AGAINST SOME OF THE TOP TEAMS IN COLLEGE TENNIS. IT’S EXCITING TO BE A PART OF THE BIG 12, BECAUSE WE ARE CHALLENGED AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. IT IS NOT EASY TO COMPETE IN THE BIG 12, AND IT NEVER WILL BE.” – MIHA LISAC

“I AM TRAINING THEM TO BE TENNIS PLAYERS, NOT BASKETBALL OR FOOTBALL PLAYERS. A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT WE DO IN THE WEIGHT ROOM ARE TENNIS SPECIFIC. I WANT THEM TO BE GREAT ATHLETES, AND I WANT THEM TO IMPROVE ON THEIR ATHLETICISM. MY FOUNDATION AS A STRENGTH COACH IS THE SAME ACROSS THE BOARD. I WANT MY KIDS TO WORK HARD, WHICH THEN TRANSLATES TO THEM WINNING MATCHES ON THE TENNIS COURTS.” – BRIAN WHITING

Development
STUDENT-ATHLETE
West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the supporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults While many of the headlines center of the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the playing field, West Virginia athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. Some of those strides include of 11 consecutive years where the department has had at least one first team Academic All-American. To help its student-athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum - The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in. A total of 488 student-athletes were represented in 2014-15 on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, of which 43 of them registered a 4.0 GPA. Additionally, seven student-athletes were named recipients of the fifth annual Dr. Gerald Large Academic Achievement Award, which is the Big 12 Conference’s highest academic honor. Over 500 student-athletes were honored on WVU’s Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Implemented in 1989, the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll was created to recognize students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 4,000 student-athletes have earned a place on the honor roll. Ford retired in 2011 after 44 years of service with the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

MIHALisac
HEAD COACH
Miha Lisac (MEE-ha LEEsots) is in his fourth season as head coach at West Virginia University. A 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac previously spent six seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he built one of the top Division I programs in the nation. Lisac is a former student-athlete at Georgia State and served as the men’s assistant coach for two years. In 2007, Lisac was named head coach of the women’s tennis team at his alma mater. While at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, back-toback CAA Championship final appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record stands at 81-95 as head coach. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009, when he guided Georgia State to the first NCAA Championship appearance in school history and was named CAA Coach of the Year.
At West Virginia
West Virginia capped its 2016 season with a 6-15 overall record, as the Mountaineers competed against seven opponents ranked in the nation’s top 50 throughout the spring season. Lisac guided the Mountaineers to a No. 75 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking for what is believed to be the first time in program history. In that same week, West Virginia edged Cornell in a 4-3 battle for the first time since 1995 to tie the all-time series record at two apiece on Feb. 27, 2016. West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 overall record. The Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010 and earned the program’s 450th win at Toledo on Jan. 31. In the spring season, WVU competed against nine ranked opponents, with its last five competitors ranked in the nation’s Top 40. Hailey Barrett earned her first victory over a ranked opponent in 2015, defeating Baylor’s then-ranked No. 82 Rachael Jakes-Baker in straight sets. Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles wins in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record. Habiba Shaker also held a teambest mark in doubles play (12-5) as she teamed up with Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez, Barett and Lewis throughout the spring season.

TENNIS
In his first season at West Virginia, Lisac led the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Atlantic Region entering the spring season. The WVU duo finished the fall season at 5-8 and battled their way to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia. Vivian Tsui tallied three straight wins at the USTA/ITA Regionals and made it further in the main singles draw bracket than any other Mountaineer, after surviving the qualifying bracket. In the spring season, freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole led the team with a combined 24 wins in singles and doubles. Mrgole posted a team-high 13 wins in the spring.
At Georgia State
Lisac’s final season with Georgia State was a benchmark year for the program, as Abigail Tere-Apisah became the school’s first-ever tennis All-American, after advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship. TereApisah also took home CAA Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer honors. Whitney Byrd and Maryna Kozachenko became just the second pair in Lisac’s tenure to earn All-CAA First Team Doubles honors. The team advanced to its second straight CAA finals and earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history (No. 38 on Feb. 25, 2012). The team finished the season ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings for a third consecutive year, after defeating three nationally ranked opponents. In 2010-11, the Panthers achieved a No. 55 ranking to finish the season, earning a spot at the national indoor tournament in the spring. The tournament took the top 64 teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed an outstanding season, advancing to the CAA Championship final and earning a 15-4 overall record, including an 8-2 mark on the road. In Lisac’s third season as coach, the team reached the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament for the third straight year, while also producing two All-CAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first team singles, second team doubles) and Linda Hricistova (second team doubles). Nakic was named CAA Co-Player of the Year, after recording a perfect 17-0 season (in singles and dual match play). She was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship. In 2009, Lisac presided over one of the most successful women’s tennis campaigns in Georgia State history, as the Panthers captured their first conference title to reach the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. GSU posted an 11-5 record and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 47. For his efforts, Lisac was honored as CAA Coach of the Year.
In his coaching debut, Lisac led the Panthers to an 11-9 dual-match record and a berth in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament during the 2008 season. Three Panthers earned All-CAA honors; Dariana Kozmina, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova.
Academic Success
Following the 2015-16 season, six Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 Academic honors. Hailey Barrett, Kaja Mrgole, Lyn Yuen Choo, Carolina Lewis and Habiba Shaker were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Yvon Martinez landed on the second team. WVU also was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year and Barrett was tabbed as an ITA Scholar-Athlete. In 2014, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all WVU teams with a 3.54 GPA, while four players received Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors: Irinka Toidze, Vivian Tsui, Chahal and Barrett. The Mountaineers also were named to the ITA All-Academic Team, with three individuals earning ITA Scholar-Athlete awards: Oana Manole, Chahal and Toidze. At GSU, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all GSU teams on several occasions, recording its highest GPA of 3.72 in the fall of 2007, AS multiple Panthers were named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award list. Mateja Podgorsek also was named to the CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict Second Team in 2008, while Martina Nitkova was honored as the 2009 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis.
As An Assistant
From 2005-07, Lisac worked under Nick Brochu, former coach of the GSU men’s tennis squad, before transitioning to the men’s coaching position. In 2007, Lisac helped guide the men’s tennis team to its first league title as a member of the CAA and an NCAA berth. That year, Martin Steigwardt became the first Panther in history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship. The 2007 squad set the school record for dual match victories with a 19-5 mark and ended the season ranked No. 36 in the country.
Personal
Lisac was born and raised in Velenje in the European nation of Slovenia, where he was ranked among the country’s top-10 juniors. A 2005 graduate of Georgia State, Lisac lettered four years for the Panthers and was a twotime All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection and a four-time conference academic honoree.

Mountaineers Ready For 2017 Season
With eight experienced returning letter winners and three promising newcomers, the West Virginia University tennis team is poised to take the next step under fourth-year head coach Miha Lisac. The 2017 squad, led by lone senior Kaja Mrgole, has depth and experience in singles and doubles play that will transfer to wins on the court. However, the wins will not come easily as the 2017 schedule promises to be one of the toughest in program history. The grueling schedule features eight teams that made the NCAA Tournament in 2016, with six of them getting past the first round and one falling in the national championship game. The schedule also features eight teams that were ranked in the top 40 of the final 2016 Oracle/ITA rankings.
Academic Excellence
The Mountaineers have a history of excellence in the classroom. They averaged a 3.49 GPA in the fall of 2016 and every student-athlete made the All-Academic Big 12 Team last year. Lyn Yuen Choo, Carolina Lewis, Mrgole and Habiba Shaker garnered first team honors, while Yvon Martinez earned second team accolades and Paula Goetz, Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White donned rookie team honors. Additionally, Goetz, Mrgole, Rosiello and Shaker were named ITA Scholar-Athletes and WVU was named an ITA AllAcademic team for the third year in a row.
Mountaineers Worldwide
Now in his fourth season at the helm of the Mountaineer tennis program, head coach Miha Lisac, a native of Velenje, Slovenia, has put together a roster comprised of studentathletes from around the world. The 11 Mountaineers hail from six different countries, including five different continents. Junior Lyn Yuen Choo, a native of Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, traveled the farthest distance to West Virginia University, coming from approximately 9,225 miles away. Junior Habiba Shaker, who hails from Cairo, Egypt, traveled approximately 5,914 from her hometown to the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. Senior Kaja Mrgole and sophomore Paula Goetz are the two Europeans on the roster. Mrgole is from Jesenice, Slovenia, and Goetz is a Rottenburg am Neckar, Germany, native. Newcomer Sofia Duran (Guayaquil, Ecuador) is the lone South American on the 2016-17 roster. In addition to international student-athletes, Lisac has also been able to bring in homegrown talent. Three Mountaineers (Abigail Rosiello, Makenzie Stolar and Kirsten White) are natives of the Mountain State. Rosiello and Stolar hail from Morgantown, while White is a Charleston native. The remaining three Mountaineers come from various locations in the United States. Jordan is a product of Detroit, Michigan. Lewis is a native of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Martinez hails from Wexford, Pennsylvania.

Fresh Faces
Three members of the 2017 squad, freshmen Christina Jordan and Sofìa Duran and redshirt sophomore Makenzie Stolar, will make their spring tennis debuts wearing the old gold and blue in 2017. Jordan attended the prestigious Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, where she was named the Eagles’ Most Valuable player in 2015 and 2016. A four-star recruit, and rated No. 87 in the country by tennisrecruiting.net, Jordan brings plenty of promise to the Mountaineers. “Christina brings great potential to the program,” Lisac said. “She has the ability to take off over the next couple of years and make a push towards competing against the top players in the conference.” Duran joins the Mountaineers by way of Guayaquil, Ecuador, where she was ranked as Ecuador’s second-best player by the International Tennis Foundation on ITFTennis. com. Duran brings a vast amount of experience after playing on the ITF Junior Circuit. Her older sister, Pamela, competed in the ITF circuit and reached her highest ranking of No. 172 in the world in 2005. “It will be an adjustment for Sofia, being with the program and getting used to everything,” Lisac said. “She brings a lot of potential. She is someone that can do very well in our program.” Stolar, a Morgantown native, comes to WVU after spending the past two seasons at Cincinnati. She will have three years, including the 2016-17 season, of eligibility remaining. She did not compete the last two seasons due to injuries During her prep career, Stolar was ranked as West Virginia’s No.2 tennis recruit, and the 15th- best in the Mid-Atlantic region by Tennisrecruiting.net. Stolar competed on the USTA Junior circuit, where she earned the Mid-Atlantic West Virginia Sportsmanship Award. “Makenzie is a native of Morgantown and brings a tremendous drive to make a push and add to the program on and off the tennis courts,” Lisac said. “Makenzie is someone who will make the program better through her everyday approach and challenge us to step up in preparation on the courts and success in the classroom.” Stolar’s family ties are rooted deep at WVU as her mother, Lisa, played basketball from 1981-85, and was an assistant coach under Kittie Blakemore and Scott Harrelson from 1986-95.
Doubles Outlook
Doubles play promises to be one of the deepest areas of the roster for the Mountaineers. In the fall WVU was led by the tandem of Shaker and Jordan, who participated in the Riviera ITA All-American Championships marking the first time a doubles pair participated in the tournament in the Miha Lisac era. Shaker has recorded a team-leading 39 wins in doubles action in her career, followed by Mrgole with 38 wins. Lewis posted a 6-1 record in the fall season in doubles play to lead all other Mountaineers.
Singles Outlook
With the loss of Hailey Barrett to graduation, junior Shaker is poised to make the step into the No.1 slot for the Mountaineers. In 2016, Shaker went 2-3 at the number one position and went a perfect 10-0 while competing on the No.2 court. Shaker holds an astounding 44-17 record in singles play in her career, ranking No. 20 on the all-time singles win list in program history. The rest of the roster looks to build on the experiences that they have built through playing in one of the country’s premier conferences, the Big 12. Five Mountaineers have won more than 25 matches in their singles careers.
Tough Schedule
The Mountaineers face what is sure to be one of the toughest schedules in program history in 2017. Comprised of eight 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, including the national runner-up- Oklahoma State, WVU will face daunting tasks each and every week throughout the spring. “It is an opportunity for them to jump through the invisible walls that have been created here for years,” assistant coach Emily Harman said. “The cool part is that they have an opportunity to do that and prove themselves week in and week out. That is what we are all about, we are playing with a chip on our shoulder.” WVU will kick off the tough slate of matches for the third year in a row with the Backyard Brawl at rival Pittsburgh on January 21. The Mountaineers hold a 28-6 record against the Panthers, in a series that started in 1975. The nonconference schedule also includes bouts at Penn State, VCU, William & Mary, Buffalo, and Indiana. March 4 will be the first time in school history that the Mountaineers will face the Hoosiers. WVU will host four nonconference matches kicking on the first weekend, with two matches against Akron on Saturday, January
28. The Mountaineers lead the series with the Zips 9-4 and won in Akron in 2016, 5-2. The following day, WVU will host border rival Maryland. The Terrapins got the better of the Mountaineers in 2016, defeating them 5-2 in College Park, Maryland. Following a three-match road trip, WVU will host Virginia Tech on Saturday, February 18. The Hokies ranked No. 38 in the final 2016 Oracle/ITA rankings. The following day, the Mountaineers will host Marshall in a battle for the Mountain State. The Thundering Herd narrowly edged out the Mountaineers in 2016, 4-3. WVU leads 21-17 in a series that stretches back to the program’s first season in 1974, where the Mountaineers won the first match, 3-1. Conference play features the most difficult part of the schedule. Six of the nine teams the Mountaineers will face in Big 12 action made it to the 2016 NCAA tournament, with five of them making it past the first round. “The bar has been established in the Big 12 by many programs for many years,” Lisac said. “They are good programs. We are always going to respect what teams have done so far in the Big 12 conference.” The Mountaineers will open conference play on March 11 in Ames, Iowa, as they take on Iowa State. The squad will then make a swing through Kansas to take on Kansas on March 24 and Kansas State on March 26. WVU will open Big 12 play in Morgantown on March 31 when they take on NCAA third round participant Texas. The following four matches feature the most grueling part of the schedule for the Mountaineers as they face four teams that were ranked No. 32 or higher in the final 2016 Oracle/ITA rankings, including a matchup with Oklahoma State, the 2016 national runner-up, in Morgantown on April 21. Senior Kaja Mrgole will be honored before the final match of the season against Oklahoma on April 23. WVU will then travel to Norman, Oklahoma, for the Big 12 Championship that will be held April 27-April 30.

PRESIDENT
E. GORDON Gee, Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having served as president of some of the most prestigious public and private universities for more than three decades. When he returned to lead West Virginia University in 2014 as the institution’s 24th president, it was a homecoming of sorts. He was first named WVU president in 1981 at age 36 – at the time, considered among the youngest persons to ever serve as a university president. He led WVU until 1985 when he went on to presidencies at the University of Colorado (198590), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990-97 and again from 2007-13. On his return to the Morgantown campus, he said, “This is not a job to me; it is a calling.” His leadership style bears that out as he works tirelessly to advance the University’s land-grant mission and open doors to the American dream. In his latest address to the University community, he called for reinventing education for our young people, on our campuses, throughout our state and beyond; transforming health care for our citizens; and cultivating prosperity in our communities. “Doing our best for the 1.8 million people of West Virginia is our noblest calling and our proudest distinction,” he said. Gee has built a special relationship with the students as well as the state’s citizens, making it a point to visit students where they live, learn and socialize -- and visiting all 55 West Virginia counties during his inaugural year – and at least half in subsequent years. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the WVU College of Law, and, in 1981, was named WVU’s 19th president. Gee serves on several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents and formerly the Business Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited

him to join its international advisory board. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he is on the executive committee of the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. He has also served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Limited Brands. In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-12, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission. Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of 11 books, including Law, Policy and Higher Education, published in 2012. He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is the Medicaid Medical Director for the State of Louisiana, and an assistant professor of Public Health and Medicine at Louisiana State University. She is also a Norman F. Gant/American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/IOM Anniversary Fellow. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón and they have five children.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Since being named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Associate Vice President at West Virginia University in January 2015, Shane Lyons has not been interested in headlines, he’s been interested in results. Working furiously behind the scenes, Lyons rolls up his sleeves every day for the betterment of WVU’s student-athletes, fans and athletic department. In his second year on the job, he keeps his fingers on the pulse of more than $110 million in athletic facility improvements that will be completed in the next year. In fact, his first year on the job can be defined as a year of fan enhancements to the WVU Coliseum and Milan Puskar Stadium as he has worked tirelessly to modernize 46- and 36-year-old facilities. Next up on his agenda are student-athlete enhancements with a new Olympic sport weight and training room. Also in the coming year, Lyons will continue to work with the Morgantown community on bringing a $45 million aquatic and track center to Morgantown, which will provide health and fitness benefits to all ages. When he’s not in his office, he’s an energized fundraiser where his efforts and honesty are appreciated by Mountaineer Athletic Club donors. Lyons oversees 18 varsity sports, a department budget of approximately $88 million, 200 employees, and approximately 500 student-athletes. He has already put the finishing touches on a $21 million baseball park and renovations are in the final stages to the football and basketball facilities that will bring long overdue new restrooms, concessions, ADA seating and fan comfort. Leaving the headlines to others, Lyons, confidently behind the scenes, directed a department in his first year that brought an 18th national championship for rifle, 30 All Americans, 110 All-Conference performers, 18 academic award winners and 109 Academic All-Conference selections. His work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team, as well as the Big 12 Conference and other national committees has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He currently serves on the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction of the Crimson Tide Athletic program. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, management of the day-to-day operations of the department and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. He also was a member and served as chairman on many prominent committees within the NCAA Governance structure during his tenure with the ACC. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units.
Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of the 25 membership service representatives. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. He and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke. Lyons is the University’s 12th athletic director.
