BIG 12

CONFERENCE

The Big 12 Conference celebrates its 24th year, as it continues to promote the strength and success of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of sixth-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 Conference is comprised of 10 members – Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia. Widely regarded as one of the top tennis conferences in the country, the league encompasses five states and nearly 38 million people. More than 4,200 student-athletes from across the United States and around the world compete annually in the sports sponsored by the conference. Four teams represented the Big 12 Conference at the 2017 NCAA Tennis Championships, with all four advancing past the first round. Texas and Texas Tech would face off in the second round. Texas Tech went on to beat the Longhorns to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

“THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE IS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST CONFERENCES IN THE NATION, AND WE COMPETE AGAINST SOME OF THE TOP TEAMS IN COLLEGE TENNIS. IT’S EXCITING TO BE A PART OF THE BIG 12, BECAUSE WE ARE CHALLENGED AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. IT IS NOT EASY TO COMPETE IN THE BIG 12, AND IT NEVER WILL BE.” – MIHA LISAC

IN THE

SPOTLIGHT

Choosing to become a Mountaineer is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, folks from across the state and throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. No school helps its student-athletes more than the people at WVU. Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news, media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. If you take advantage of these opportunities, it can have a positive effect, not only on your career as a student-athlete at West Virginia, but also on your life after you have donned the Old Gold and Blue.

“WEST VIRGINIA IS A SPECIAL PLACE, UNLIKE ANY OTHER. I FEEL EXTREMELY PRIVILEGED TO BE IN THE POSITION THAT I AM IN. I AM ABLE TO HELP THESE YOUNG LADIES MATURE AND PREPARE FOR LIFE AFTER TENNIS. I WANT TO BUILD SOMETHING SPECIAL TOGETHER, AND WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT HERE AT WVU.” – MIHA LISAC

“COMMUNITY SERVICE IS ONE OF THE MOST CRUCIAL THINGS THAT WE DO. THIS IS A VERY SMALL, TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY. COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR US IS A PART OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS US SO WELL. NOT JUST US AS THE TENNIS TEAM BUT THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT OVERALL. IT IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE CONTINUE TO STAY CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNITY AND THAT WE CONTINUE TO SHOW OUR APPRECIATION.” – MIHA LISAC

IN THE

COMMUNITY

6

Representing West Virginia University, the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia in a charitable manner is important to the WVU women’s tennis team.

The women’s tennis team also hosts youth camps and clinics throughout the year in order to involve the community with the program.

The Mountaineers are constantly involved in community service activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the Children’s Hospital and the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which makes the team aware of any volunteer openings in the area.

Becoming successful and positive role models on and off the court are important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers give back to Morgantown and its surrounding communities every chance they get.

ONCE A MOUNTAINEER, ALWAYS A

MOUNTAINEER

In 2014, former West Virginia University women’s tennis player Jo Marie (Cinco) Bohn was inducted into the 24th annual WVU Sports Hall of Fame at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility. “It was so unexpected. As I look back on the previous inductees and their past collegiate accomplishments, I was completely shocked that I was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame,” Bohn said. A former standout for the women’s tennis team, Bohn put together a career record of 214-73 from 1988 to 1992 under former coach Martha Thorn. Bohn received her degree in sports management from WVU in 1992, and 22 years later she continues to remain at the top of the record book. The 1989 Atlantic 10 Conference Freshman of the Year, Bohn finished her career as the 1992 Atlantic 10 Senior of the Year and remains the only player in WVU history to win more than 60 matches in one season and have two 30-win seasons in singles matches. Bohn also was honored with a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team in her final season as a Mountaineer. “This honor means a lot to me. I come from a small women’s sport at a large University,” Bohn said, a native of Charleston, West Virginia. “I also come from a small high school, Charleston Catholic High, so to receive the highest collegiate athletic award one can acquire is an amazing feeling.” Although, the highlight of her college years were not the accolades she received year after year, but simply donning the Old Gold and Blue. “I enjoyed the team, traveling and even the band practicing as we practiced on the courts. It still gives me chills to hear “The Pride of West Virginia” play at games today. I truly can say that I miss it all,” Bohn said. As the assistant coach for the women’s tennis team at the University of Charleston from 2012-14, Bohn encouraged her players to live in the moment and to not take the game they love for granted. “As a college athlete you only get four years to play, so why not give it your all and leave with no regrets,” Bohn said. “Then hopefully down the road you can look back and be proud of your contribution to your University.” Bohn resides in Charleston with husband, Pete Bohn, and their two children, Jada and Xavier. She is currently a tennis instructor at the local YMCA and the Charleston Tennis Club. The 2014 class also included Michael Anti (rifle), Chris Enochs (baseball), George King (men’s basketball), Mike Krak (golf), Gene Lathey (football), Mike Logan (football) and Lester Rowe (men’s basketball). The class brought the number of total inductees to 156.

FACILITIES MOUNTAINEER TENNIS COURTS The Mountaineer Tennis Courts boast six rebound-ace hard courts and grandstand seating for more than 500 spectators. The facility is located on campus, adjacent to the WVU Coliseum, providing ample parking and easy access for players and fans alike. In 2016, new lights were added to illuminate all six courts for play at night. Additionally, the courts were resurfaced and new windscreens were added. SUMMIT TENNIS ACADEMY Summit Tennis Academy offers a place for the West Virginia University women’s tennis team to compete during inclement weather. Summit features four indoor championship cushioned Deco Turf System courts, a climate-controlled environment with lighting at a competitive level for full sun protection from UV rays and spectator viewing areas to watch and enjoy the competitive play. These courts were used at the US Open and Tennis Masters Cincinnati. Summit also offers five outdoor lighted Hartru clay courts. In addition, the spacious club house offers private men’s and women’s locker rooms, a luxurious lobby and a player’s lounge with a big screen TV. Members can play, relax and socialize in a pleasant, quiet environment. At Summit, the WVU women’s tennis team has priority at designated times and will be accommodated for indoor play in the event of inclement weather. In addition, there is a full service pro shop and instructional services by professional coaching and teaching instructors, along with on-court technology for stroke and playing analysis. In 2017, five new seating areas were added to now accommodate over 100 more spectators during indoor matches.

SUMMIT IS AN OUTSTANDING TENNIS FACILITY THAT PROVIDES INDOOR PLAY FOR US. IT IS AN INCREDIBLY WELL MAINTAINED FACILITY, AND WE HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO WORK WITH SUMMIT AND MAKE IT OUR HOME REGARDLESS OF THE WEATHER.” – MIHA LISAC “

MIHA

LISAC

HEAD COACH » SIXTH YEAR

M

Miha Lisac (MEE-ha LEE-sots) enters his sixth season as the head coach of the West Virginia University tennis program. The 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac previously spent six seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he built one of the top Division I programs in the nation. Lisac is a former student-athlete at Georgia State and served as the men’s assistant coach for two years. In 2007, Lisac was named head coach of the women’s tennis team at his alma mater. While at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, back-to-back CAA Championship final appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record as a head coach stands at 92-125. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009 when he guided Georgia State to the first NCAA Championship appearance in school history and was named CAA Coach of the Year. AT WEST VIRGINIA The Mountaineers wrapped up the 2018 season with a 7-14 overall record while competing against at least eight teams ranked in the top 50 of the ITA/ Oracle team rankings for the second consecutive year. The highlight of the campaign came with a 4-1 win over Iowa State, WVU’s first Big 12 conference win in program history. The win solidified the program’s growth under Lisac’s watch and marked another milestone in his goal to become consistent Big 12 contenders. In addition to leading WVU past in-state rival Marshall for the second straight year, West Virginia also saw four Mountaineers post at least 20 wins in singles and doubles play during the year.

42

WVU concluded the 2017 campaign with a 4-16 overall record, facing eight opponents that were ranked in the top 50. Lisac led the Mountaineers to a win over Marshall, ending the Thundering Herd’s four-match winning streak in the series. The season also saw two Mountaineers, Christina Jordan and Habiba Shaker, head to the ITA AllAmerican Championships for the first time under Lisac. In the spring, Shaker led the team in singles play with a record of 8-5 at the No. 1 position, while Paula Goetz paced the Mountaineers in doubles with a 9-7 record. West Virginia capped its 2016 season with a 6-15 overall record, competing against seven opponents ranked in the nation’s top 50 throughout the spring season. Lisac guided the Mountaineers to a No. 75 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking for what was believed to be the first time in program history. In that same week, West Virginia edged Cornell in a 4-3 battle for the first time since 1995 to tie the all-time series record at two apiece on Feb. 27, 2016. West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 overall record. The Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010 and earned the program’s 450th win at Toledo on Jan. 31. In the spring season, WVU competed against nine ranked opponents, with its last five competitors ranked in the nation’s Top 40. Hailey Barrett earned her first victory over a ranked opponent in 2015, defeating Baylor’s thenranked No. 82 Rachael Jakes-Baker in straight sets. Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles wins in a season, ending her freshman

campaign with a 24-6 singles record. Habiba Shaker also held a team-best mark in doubles play (12-5) as she teamed up with Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez, Barrett and Lewis throughout the spring season. In his first season at West Virginia, Lisac led the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Atlantic Region entering the spring season. The WVU duo finished the fall season at 5-8 and battled their way to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia. Vivian Tsui tallied three straight wins at the USTA/ITA Regionals and made it further in the main singles draw bracket than any other Mountaineer, after surviving the qualifying bracket. In the spring season, freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole led the team with a combined 24 wins in singles and doubles. Mrgole posted a team-high 13 wins in the spring. AT GEORGIA STATE Lisac’s final season with Georgia State was a benchmark year for the program, as Abigail Tere-Apisah became the school’s first-ever tennis All-American, after advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship. Tere-Apisah also took home CAA Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer honors. Whitney Byrd and Maryna Kozachenko became just the second pair in Lisac’s tenure to earn All-CAA First Team Doubles honors. The team advanced to its second straight CAA finals and earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history (No. 38 on Feb. 25, 2012). The team finished the season ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings for a third consecutive year, after defeating three nationally ranked opponents.

In 2010-11, the Panthers achieved a No. 55 ranking to finish the season, earning a spot at the national indoor tournament in the spring. The tournament took the top 64 teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed an outstanding season, advancing to the CAA Championship final and earning a 15-4 overall record, including an 8-2 mark on the road.

Paula Goetz, Kaja Mrgole and Habiba Shaker, while Lyn Yuen Choo earned a spot on the second-team. Additionally, the Mountaineers were named an ITA All-Academic Team for the fourth consecutive season. Six studentathletes earned ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition, Goetz, Yvon Martinez, Mrgole, Abigail Rosiello, Shaker and Makenzie Stolar.

In Lisac’s third season as coach, the team reached the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament for the third straight year, while also producing two All-CAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first team singles, second team doubles) and Linda Hricistova (second team doubles). Nakic was named CAA Co-Player of the Year, after recording a perfect 17-0 season (in singles and dual match play). She was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship.

Following the 2015-16 season, six Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 Academic honors. Hailey Barrett, Kaja Mrgole, Lyn Yuen Choo, Carolina Lewis and Habiba Shaker were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Yvon Martinez landed on the second team. WVU also was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year and Barrett was tabbed as an ITA Scholar-Athlete.

In 2009, Lisac presided over one of the most successful women’s tennis campaigns in Georgia State history, as the Panthers captured their first conference title to reach the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. GSU posted an 11-5 record and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 47. For his efforts, Lisac was honored as CAA Coach of the Year. In his coaching debut, Lisac led the Panthers to an 11-9 dual-match record and a berth in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament during the 2008 season. Three Panthers earned AllCAA honors; Dariana Kozmina, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The academic successes continued under Lisac and the Mountaineers in the 2017-18 season. Three Mountaineers, Paula Goetz, Yvon Martinez and Abigail Rosiello, were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, marking the fifth straight year that at least three members of the team have earned first-team honors. In addition to the three first-team recipients, Lyn Yuen Choo earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors for the second consecutive year. Along with WVU’s Big 12 Honors, the Mountaineers were named an ITA All-Academic Team for a fifth straight year. Five studentathletes were given ITA ScholarAthlete Recognition – Martinez, Goetz, Kirsten White, Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau.

In 2014, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all WVU teams with a 3.54 GPA, while four players received Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors: Irinka Toidze, Vivian Tsui, Chahal and Barrett. The Mountaineers also were named to the ITA AllAcademic Team, with three individuals earning ITA Scholar-Athlete awards: Oana Manole, Chahal and Toidze. At GSU, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all GSU teams on several occasions, recording its highest GPA of 3.72 in the fall of 2007, AS multiple Panthers were named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award list. Mateja Podgorsek also was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team in 2008, while Martina Nitkova was honored as the 2009 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis.

AS AN ASSISTANT From 2005-07, Lisac worked under Nick Brochu, former coach of the GSU men’s tennis squad, before transitioning to the men’s coaching position. In 2007, Lisac helped guide the men’s tennis team to its first league title as a member of the CAA and an NCAA berth. That year, Martin Steigwardt became the first Panther in history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship. The 2007 squad set the school record for dual match victories with a 19-5 mark and ended the season ranked No. 36 in the country. PERSONAL Lisac was born and raised in Velenje in the European nation of Slovenia, where he was ranked among the country’s top-10 juniors. A 2005 graduate of Georgia State, Lisac lettered four years for the Panthers and was a two-time All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection and a four-time conference academic honoree. 2018-19 SEASON

PREVIEW “They’ve been here from, almost, the very beginning. They’ve gone through the whole process that we’ve gone through,” Lisac said. “It’s great to see them grow, it’s great to see them mature. It’s great to see them take steps forward and get better as the years go on.” “Those three players, including everyone who has graduated, are the reason we are in the situation that we’re in, which is a much better situation than where we started.”

This year, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team returns seven letterwinners and welcomes two newcomers. WVU tennis enters the 2018-19 season looking to soar to new heights under sixth-year coach Miha Lisac. The 2019 squad is led by seniors Paula Goetz, Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White. With the help of four other returners (juniors Sofia Duran and Christina Jordan and sophomores Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau), the Mountaineers will seek to channel their combined experience into competitive play on the court. WVU will be tested yet again in 2018-19, as this year’s schedule provides several new challenges. Playing in arguably the best tennis conference in the nation, the Big 12 will provide the Mountaineers with several familiar obstacles to overcome. Even with one of the toughest conferences in all of college tennis, Lisac and the rest of the support staff are preparing the Mountaineers to compete. ACHIEVEMENT IN THE CLASSROOM The Mountaineers continued their tradition of excellence in the classroom, averaging a 3.28 GPA in 2017-18. Six student-athletes were selected to an All-Academic Big 12 Team last year. Graduate Yvon Martinez and seniors Paula Goetz and Abigail Rosiello collected first-team honors, while graduate Lyn Yuen Choo garnered second-team accolades. Sophomores Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. Furthermore, four current members of the team – Caputo, Courteau, Goetz and White – were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, along with Martinez, and WVU was named an ITA AllAcademic team for the fifth consecutive year.

46

AROUND THE WORLD Entering his sixth season leading the Mountaineer tennis program, Lisac – a native of Velenje, Slovenia – has compiled a diverse roster of student-athletes from around the world. The Mountaineers have 10 players hailing from six different countries, including four different continents. Two Mountaineers hail from South America: junior Sofía Duran (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and sophomore Giovanna Caputo (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil). Junior Paula Goetz is the lone European on the roster, hailing from Rottenburg am Neckar, Germany. Sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau is a Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, native. She is the lone Canadian on the roster. Newcomer Anastasiia Bovolskaia traveled 6,076 miles – the furthest on the team – from UlanBatorskaya, Irkutsk, Russia to join the WVU tennis squad. She is the lone Russian on the roster. Along with adding student-athletes from the international arena, Lisac has always been active about bringing in homegrown, West Virginia talent. Seniors Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White both hail from the Mountain State. Rosiello is a native of Morgantown, and White is a product of Charleston. Rounding out the roster, junior Christina Jordan and Newcomer Nicole Roc both hail from the Midwestern United States. Jordan is a native of Detroit, Michigan, and Roc is from Chicago, Illinois. A TRIO OF SENIORS In 2018, head coach Miha Lisac looks to his senior leaders to continue to grow and develop, with the hopes that these three seniors will lead by example and help propel WVU tennis to the next level. Nevertheless, seniors Paula Goetz, Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White have made every second of their time as Mountaineers count, on and off the court.

For Lisac, this group of seniors possesses a wealth of experience that spans far beyond the boundaries of the court. Academically, all three seniors have been selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes and have garnered Academic All-Big 12 status. In 2018, Goetz was selected to two Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic at-large teams. Along with their success in the classroom, Lisac also praises how his seniors embrace the Mountaineer mentality. “They all contribute on a daily basis in terms of the work they do, academically, the mentality and who they are during practices, how they integrate themselves on the team,” Lisac explained. “They’ve all done a great job with that.” “The work they’ve done so far is the reason why we are able to bring higher level recruits to the program, today. It’s why we’re able to do higher level work within the team, today. That credit goes to them, but they still have a year ahead of them.” A COUPLE NEW FACES Freshmen Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Nicole Roc are set to make their Old Gold and Blue debuts this season. Both have a vast amount of playing experience in multiple forums. Roc, a TennisRecruting.net five-star prospect, was the 2017 Class 1A Illinois state champion. Roc also claimed three city and sectional championships during her time at Northside College Prep. Bovolskaia, coming from the other side of the globe, has a vast amount of experience in the international circuit. In 2017 alone, Bovolskaia competed in three U18 championship tournaments – placing first in Doha, Qatar, reaching the semifinals in Telavi, Georgia and capturing a quarterfinals finish in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. “First, obviously, they’re both the level of players that will add on to where we’ve been in the past, as a team,” said head coach Miha Lisac. “They bring a good amount of talent to the program and that’s exciting.” Even with an impressive background on the court, Lisac appreciates that both newcomers are multi-faceted and can help the Mountaineer tennis program grow and develop in several areas.

“Second, it’s who they are as individuals and people. It’s extremely important to us that we’re bringing the right type of people into the program, and they were both a very good fit for what we’re looking for,” Lisac explained. “Third, they’re both outstanding students, and that is equally important in our program as everything else.” “I’m very happy that they’ve decided to come and join West Virginia University.”

Tennis Classic on Nov. 2-4, where they will compete against host Louisville, Marquette and Miami (Ohio). The Mountaineers conclude fall play at the Florida State All-Conference Showdown in Tallahassee, Florida, on Nov. 9-11. West Virginia will face the likes of Oregon, Tulane, Wisconsin, Furman, Troy, Central Florida, Middle Tennessee State, East Tennessee State, Florida, McNeese State, North Florida, Clemson, Southern Miss and host Florida State.

DOUBLES OVERVIEW Doubles play continues to show a tremendous amount of depth for WVU, with all seven returners seeing game action last season. In 2018, Paula Goetz again led the Mountaineers with an overall record of 16-12 in doubles play, going 6-8 in the fall and 10-4 in the spring. Goetz will look to continue her success in doubles play and lead by example this season.

“We’re always looking forward to it; it’s great competition,” said sixth-year coach Miha Lisac. “We have very good tournaments that we’re able to go to, travel to. At Florida State, there are a lot of great teams come down there. At Louisville, there’s great competition as well. We have a solid lineup here for our home tournament. (ITA) Regionals are always tough, and the Virginia Tech Invite is a very good tournament as well.”

Goetz leads the Mountaineers with 33 career doubles wins, followed by Christina Jordan with 21, Giovanna Caputo with 14, Anne-Sophie Courteau and Sofia Duran are tied with 12, Abigail Rosiello with 7 and Kirsten White with 2.

WVU’s spring 2019 slate is made up of 21 dual matches, including nine regional matches and nine Big 12 conference matches.

SINGLES OVERVIEW With two experienced graduates leaving the program, the Mountaineers will look to its experienced group to rise to the occasion in singles play. Finishing with a 15-11 singles record in 2017, Paula Goetz is poised to lead the Mountaineers through the fall tournament season and into the tough Big 12 schedule in the spring. Leading WVU in singles wins last season with 16, Giovanna Caputo looks to build upon an impressive freshman season and help guide the Mountaineers in 2018. The rest of the roster looks to build on the experiences that they have built through playing in, arguably, the best tennis conference in the nation – the Big 12.

“Big 12 play sets the bar for us, without question,” said sixth-year head coach Miha Lisac. “This is why we all decided to come to West Virginia University – to be challenged at that highest level, to work and build towards that and to, ultimately, see how far we can push this program.” West Virginia opens the spring season on the road, as it travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to take on Duquesne on Feb. 2 and Pitt on Feb. 3. The Mountaineers begin conference play early this season, as they travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete against Iowa State on Feb. 10. Last season, West Virginia defeated the Cyclones, 4-1, to claim the first Big 12 conference win in program history. WVU hosts their home opener on Feb. 15 as the squad plays host to Cleveland State. The

team also competes at home on Feb. 16 in a matchup with Akron. Following a two-match home stint, West Virginia travels to Williamsville, New York, to square off with Niagara on Feb. 22 and Buffalo on Feb. 23. The team’s road trip continues as WVU swings through the commonwealth of Virginia. The Mountaineers are scheduled to compete against 2018 Atlantic 10 Champion VCU in Richmond on March 2 and Old Dominion in Norfolk on March 3. After the four-game roadtrip, WVU returns home to take on Binghamton on March 9 and in-state foe Marshall on March 10. The team is back on the road for conference play on March 15, as the Mountaineers travel to Lubbock, Texas, to square off against Texas Tech. West Virginia caps their third road trip of the season when it travels to Fort Worth, Texas, on March 16 to take on TCU. WVU returns to Morgantown on March 22 to compete against Oklahoma. The team also hosts Oklahoma State on March 23. Following four straight conference matchups, the Mountaineers host California University of Pennsylvania and Towson on March 30 to conclude non-conference play. West Virginia will hit the road one final time as the team travels to Kansas on April 5-7, to square off against Kansas State and Kansas, respectively. The Mountaineers cap the regular season at home, beginning with a match against Baylor on April 12. WVU will honor three seniors – Paula Goetz, Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White – on April 14, as the team hosts 2018 Big 12 Champion Texas for the regular season finale. West Virginia is set to compete in the Big 12 Championship from April 18-21 in Lawrence, Kansas.

A CHALLENGING SCHEDULE Highlighted by the Martha Thorn Invitational in the fall and 10 home dual matches in the spring, West Virginia has built a schedule that will bring exciting and competitive tennis to Morgantown. Starting in the fall, WVU will play five tournaments, beginning with the Hokie Fall Invite on Sept. 28-30, in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Mountaineers will face players from host Virginia Tech, Appalachian State, Bluefield State, Delaware, Georgia Southern, Iowa State, James Madison, Liberty, Marshall, Penn State, Radford and VCU. The following weekend, WVU travels to Lynchburg, Virginia, to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regionals Oct. 12-16, hosted by Liberty University. West Virginia returns home to host its only home tournament on Oct. 19-21 with the Martha Thorn Mountaineer Invitational. The tournament will consist of players from Akron, Cleveland State, Delaware and Duquesne. WVU caps the fall with back-to-back tournaments on the road. The Mountaineers first travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the Louisville WVUTennis

PRESIDENT » WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY E. GORDON GEE J.D., ED.D.

D

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having served as president of some of the most prestigious public and private universities for more than three decades. When he returned to lead West Virginia University in 2014 as the institution’s 24th president, it was a homecoming of sorts. He was first named WVU president in 1981 at age 36 – at the time, among the youngest persons to ever serve as a university president. He led West Virginia University until 1985 when he went on to presidencies at the University of Colorado (1985-90), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990-97 and again from 2007-13. On his return to the Morgantown campus, he said, “This is not a job to me; it is a calling.” His leadership style bears that out as he works tirelessly to advance the University’s land-grant mission and open doors to the American dream. In one of his latest addresses to the University community, he noted that for 150 years, the institution has been a polar star guiding West Virginians toward a brighter tomorrow. He said, “That is why, in this milestone year, we recommit our University to living the values that drive our work. Serving our students and our state is not just our duty — it is our passion.” Gee has built a special relationship with the students as well as the state’s citizens, making it a point to visit students where they live, learn and socialize – and visiting all 55 West Virginia counties during his inaugural year – and at least half in subsequent years. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the WVU College of Law, and, in 1981, was named WVU’s 19th president. Gee has served on several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He is past chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and formerly served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Gee is currently serving as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee and is a member of Forward 50, an initiative working toward student equity, success and outcomes. Last summer, working with Department of Commerce and Marshall University officials, he was instrumental in establishing the West Virginia Forward initiative to bring together state and local leaders in providing a blueprint for alignment and focus on solutions for a united and prosperous West Virginia. It quickly developed into a larger effort with policymakers, experts and government officials working together to formulate results-driven policy to help strengthen and diversify all regions of the state. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he is on the executive committee of the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees as well as on the Board of Trustees of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain, with which West Virginia University has a long-standing academic partnership. A recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, he is an executive board member of Boy Scouts of America. He has also served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Limited Brands. In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-12, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission.

78

Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions over the years. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of over a dozen books, including his two most recent, “Leading Colleges and Universities” and “Land-Grant Universities for the Future.” He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. Gee is engaged to Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. In addition to that role, she is a practicing gynecologist and Gratis Faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SHANE LYONS ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT

I

In his fourth year as the director of athletics at West Virginia University, Shane Lyons has a clear vision for his athletic program. It’s a vision that focuses on the betterment of more than 500 student-athletes and the day-to-day needs that will help them succeed in the classroom and in competition. His open lines of communications have made him a popular role model for WVU athletes, and his honest, fair and caring approach has energized an entire department. Whether it’s regularly scheduled meetings with the student-athletes or his open-door office policy, Lyons has his finger on the pulse of his student-athletes, coaches and staff. His endless energy is devoted to his facilities master plan that will keep West Virginia a strong Power 5 institution and position his department for growth and continued success. Lyons’ facilities master plan isn’t about keeping up with the Joneses, it’s about taking what his department has, improving it and making it complete for the student-athlete. From training, nutrition, medical and competitiveness, Lyons’ vision is for future success, building winning programs and enhancing the overall WVU student-athlete experience. Lyons is about results, and he has already left a great deal of accomplishments in his rear view mirror. He spearheaded and finished more than $100 million in fan enhancements to Milan Puskar Stadium and the WVU Coliseum, broke ground on a $45 million aquatic and track center in Morgantown, completed phase two of Coliseum renovations, bringing the arena up to current ADA seating code, and for the first-time ever, introduced a second video board to Milan Puskar Stadium to provide information and improve fan entertainment. Overseeing 18 varsity sports, a self-sustaining department budget of more than $93 million and 250 employees, Lyons’ leadership has also guided WVU to unparalleled success in the classroom as the department recorded an impressive overall 3.2 GPA in 2018. And, with the student-athlete in mind, he has implemented a Clinical and Sport Psychology unit with a full-time director and professional interns, added specialized learning assistants to the Student-Athlete Development unit and entered into a partnership with WVU Medicine’s Neuroscience Department to assist in the training and recovery of student-athletes, all emphasizing his overall commitment to the well-being and performance student-athletes. Ask him and he’ll tell you it’s not his department, but West Virginia’s department, and he can tell you his vision to improve it not only for the coming year, but for three, five, seven and 10 years down the road. He cares and the proof lies in what he has already accomplished in three years. Additionally, his work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team, as well as the Big 12 Conference and other national committees, has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He currently serves on the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee. In 2018, he chaired the overall athletic directors committee for the Big 12, was named again to the NCAA Division I Council and will serve as chair of the NCAA Division I Football Oversite Committee. He is also on the board of directors for Mylan Park in Morgantown. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction of the Crimson Tide Athletic program. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, management of the day-to-day operations of the department and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a

comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of rules and interpretations for the 25 membership service representatives and was the staff liaison to various NCAA standing committees. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Lyons, the University’s 12th athletic director, and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke. Cameron is a member of Terry Bowden’s football team at Akron and Brooke plays volleyball at Morgantown High School.
