BIG 12
CONFERENCE
MATTHEW SHARPSTENE
The Big 12 is in its 23rd year in 201819 as it continues to promote the strength and success of one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of seventh-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. TCU and West Virginia joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. With 10 members, the Big 12 remains as the only autonomy conference to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule. The Conference’s hard work ethic
4
and strong values have translated to enormous success in its first 22 years. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the league can boast of 60 NCAA team titles and 654 individual national championships.
Big 12 Champions for Life, an initiative of the Big 12 Conference, began its fourth year in 2018-19. It features student-athletes, selected by Conference institutions, in a series of public service announcements highlighting the positive impact an athletics scholarship has had on their lives leading to stories of personal growth and success.
The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. In its short history, the Big 12 has over 650 Academic All-America recipients, averaging about 30 each season. Big 12 studentathletes have shown commitment to their studies by earning numerous
WV USP O RT S .COM individual academic recognitions. MARK GOETZ Fourteen times in the past 15 years a league athlete has garnered the top academic honor for their respective sport, including Jevon Carter (West Virginia) for men’s basketball in 2017-18 and Bianca St. Georges (West Virginia) for soccer in 2018-19. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships. SEAN » HEAD COACH HOMETOWN: Meridian, Mississippi ALMA MATER: Mississippi State, B.S. 2004, M.S. 2005 YEARS AT WVU: 5th Season
Sean Covich was named West Virginia University’s 12th men’s golf coach on May 22, 2014, and has led the program to great success in just four varsity seasons. One week shy of the fifth anniversary of his hiring, Covich led West Virginia to its first NCAA appearance in 72 seasons. With the help of freshman Kurtis Grant, the 2018-19 season started off with a bang as Grant posted a 206 in the Old Town Club Collegiate, tying the program record on his way to an 11th-place finish. Soon after, senior Max Sear became the first Mountaineer in more than 35 years to earn medalist honors when he finished atop the team leaderboard at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in October. His first-place finish led the Mountaineers to the team title for the first time ever at their home event. The inaugural Big 12 Match Play Championship was up next for WVU. The Mountaineers put up a tough battle and came away with a win over Iowa State and a tie with Kansas. The Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, which West Virginia joined UCF in hosting, and the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic wrapped up fall play as the Mountaineers finished with a program-best No. 37 ranking via Golfstat. Spring trips down south included a third-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Florida, and a fourth-place finish at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, North Carolina. In an annual tradition, the Mountaineers wrapped up play at rival Penn State’s Rutherford Intercollegiate, taking home third place. At the end of April, West Virginia welcomed the league’s nine other programs to The Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs as the Mountaineers played host to the 2019 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship at The Greenbrier. Despite a soggy start, sophomore Matthew Sharpstene led the way for WVU with a 13th-place finish at the historic resort. However, history was made May 1. The team gathered at the WVU Coliseum at 9 p.m. to await its fate as the top-50 national ranking all but guaranteed the Mountaineers a spot in an NCAA Regional. The team didn’t have to wait long, as “West Virginia” showed up in the first regional announced. The No. 8-seeded Mountaineers would join Big 12 foes Oklahoma State, Baylor and Iowa State at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky. It marked the program’s first NCAA appearance since 1947.
18
Sharpstene, Sear, Etienne Papineau, Logan Perkins and Philipp Matlari represented West Virginia in Louisville, along with alternate Mark Goetz. The Mountaineers found themselves in contention for a national championship bid early on, as they finished the first day in fifth place after Perkins led the way at one-under-par. The team slipped to eighth on the second day but rallied in third round. After bouncing in and out of the top five throughout the day, WVU finished just two strokes out of contention, taking sixth place at the regional. Though the season ended the historical repercussions did not. Sharpstene became the first Mountaineer on record to earn Division I PING Midwest All-Region team accolades in May. Three more Mountaineers were honored in July as Sear, Papineau and Matlari were named to the GCAA Scholar All-America Teams for their play on the course and work in the classroom. Additionally, West Virginia earned team academic honors for the third straight season. The 2017-18 season ended with the program’s first-ever top-100 ranking for the Mountaineers, as they finished the season at No. 90 out of 300 NCAA Division I Programs. Covich’s Mountaineers started the season off with a bang, taking the team title at the Janney VCU Shootout to open the year. They added another team win in the spring, finishing first at the Martin Downs Collegiate in February. WVU registered team runner-up finishes at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, the Furman Intercollegiate and the Rutherford Intercollegiate. The squad capped the season with a ninth-place finish at the 2018 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship – a program-best – and its second straight GCAA AllAcademic Team award. Individually, the Mountaineers excelled on the course and in the classroom. Max Sear set a program record with his 73.03 scoring average on the season and became the program’s second-ever GCAA Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar. He was joined by five teammates in earning Academic All-Big 12 honors. Freshman Matthew Sharpstene became the program’s first-ever Big 12 Golfer of the Month in November and went on to set a program low round after carding eight birdies to shoot a 64 at Martin Downs in February. In just their second season of varsity competition in 2016-17, the Mountaineers posted their first tournament win in more than 30 years when they claimed the title at the East Carolina
WVUSPORTS.COM Intercollegiate in April of 2017. Vienna native Alan Cooke set a program record with a 206 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in March before tying teammate Max Sear with a record low of 66. WVU set records for lowest team round (277) and 54-hole total (849) at the Seminole Intercollegiate as well. The team made strides in the classroom as well, earning GCAA All-Academic Team accolades after posting a team GPA of 3.0 or above. Chris Williams became the program’s first GCAA AllAcademic Scholar by maintaining a GPA of 3.2 or above and a stroke average of 76 or less. Williams and Cooke repeated as members of the Big 12 All-Academic Team as well. Cooke became the first Mountaineer since 1982 to tee off on Sept. 6, 2015, at the Tiger Turning Stone Invitational in Verona, New York. The squad finished 10th at the historic tournament and built momentum from there. Senior Easton Renwick recorded the team’s first top-10 finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Sept. 15, 2015, and would go on to add four more top-25 finishes on the season. After team posting a new-era low of 283 in two rounds at the Joe Feaganes Invite in the fall, WVU capped the regular season with a runner-up finish at rival Penn State’s Rutherford Intercollegiate in April. The squad shot 284-284-285=853 for its lowest 54-hole total of the season. Cooke set a program record by shooting a 207 for six under par and a runner-up individual finish. Tristan Nicholls joined Cooke, Sear, Renwick and Williams in representing West Virginia at the team’s first-ever Big 12 Golf Championship at Whispering Pines Country Club in Trinity Texas April 29-May 1. Though the Mountaineers finished 10th at the event, Sear finished two spots shy of all-conference honors with a 12th-place finish. Prior to the team’s trip to Texas, Covich was inducted into the Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame for his time at Meridian Community College. A native of Meridian, Miss., Covich came to WVU from Mississippi State, where he served as the assistant men’s golf coach the last three seasons. He previously served as the head men’s golf coach at Meridian Community College for five seasons. At Mississippi State, Covich became the school’s first full-time men’s golf assistant coach in 2011. He zhelped the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and 2014 while improving the school’s national ranking from No. 125 in 2011 to a school-record No. 27 in 2013. The Bulldogs won a school-record four tournament titles in 2012-13, then added two more tournament wins in 2013-14 for the most wins (six) in a two-year span in school history. The Bulldogs set school records for best team 36-hole score (-25), best team 54-hole score (-38) and season records for most team birdies (497), most team eagles (14) and most team scores of even-par or better (14). In addition, he helped the Bulldogs to the second-lowest team round in school history (274) and the secondlowest team score in relation to par (-14). Covich coached Chad Ramey to All-SEC honors, the first player in school history to be named all-conference three consecutive seasons. At Meridian Community College, Covich successfully transitioned MCC from an NJCAA Division II program to an NJCAA Division I national power. He led MCC to an NJCAA National Championship Runner-Up finish in just their second season at the Division I level and positioned the Eagles as the No. 1 ranked JUCO team during the 2010-11 season. At MCC, Covich guided his squad to 18 tournament championships. He produced 15 senior college players, six all-tournament team members at the national championship and guided seven AllAmericans. During a back-to-back-to-back NJCAA postseason run, Covich’s 2010 squad finished runner-up at the NJCAA National Championships. He also coached the school’s first individual national champion in 2010. The Eagles set multiple school records during the Covich era, including most tournament wins in a season (9), lowest team score (274), and lowest team score in relation to par (-14). Covich earned Coach of the Year honors four times during his span at MCC. In 2007, Covich was awarded with Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Coaches, the National Junior College Association of America (NJCAA) Region 23, and the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC). In 2011, after winning the Golf Coaches Association of America’s District IV Coach of the Year Award, he was named a semifinalist for the Golf Coaches Association of America National Coach of the Year. Known as an outstanding recruiter, Covich recruited and coached Brandt Garon, a two-time All-American at MCC. The Louisiana native
won the Arnold Palmer Award and the NJCAA National Championship in 2010 while under Covich’s guidance. Garon then added the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award in 2011. Another Covich-product was 2012 NJCAA National Champion Jake Stirling. The Aussie was also a two-time All-American and was recruited to MCC by Covich. T.J. Morgan became the third player recruited by Covich to MCC who finished first at the NJCAA National Championship (t1 in 2013). At Mississippi State, Covich reeled in the No. 1 ranked junior college golfer in the nation twice, as Joe Sakulpolphaisan (Darton State College) signed with the Bulldogs in 2012 and Tim Walker (Central Alabama Community College) signed with MSU in 2014. Covich lettered at Meridian Community College from 1998-2000 and was a member of the 1999 NJCAA Region 23 Championship team. He received the Most Dedicated award during the 1998-1999 season. 2019-20
OUTLOOK
Following an historic season in 2018-19, the West Virginia University golf team enters the 2019-10 campaign with one of its most experienced rosters of the new era. The six returning players boast nearly 300 combined career rounds of experience and posted 23 total top-25 finishes last season alone. The veterans will be bolstered by a trio of talented freshmen, hailing from both the U.S. and abroad. In total, the team is comprised of players from six state and three counties and will embark on what may be the squad’s most challenging schedule to date.
The duo also led the squad in the classroom, earning Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Honors and Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolades. In addition, Matlari was named the the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 squad.
SENIORS
Coach SeanCOVICH
PHILIPP MATLARI ETIENNE PAPINEAU
A pair of accomplished seniors lead the way for the Mountaineers. Etienne Papineau is on par – no pun intended – to become the third four-year letterwinner in program history. The Quebec native ranked third on the team with a scoring average of 72.09, posting five rounds in the 60s on the year. Papineau had three top-10 finishes on the season, including a fourth-place finish at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational. In his second season with the Mountaineers, Philipp Matlari ended the year with a scoring average of 74.04 and a trio of top-25 finishes. Both Papineau and Matlari represented WVU at the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA Louisville Regional.

JUNIORS
All three juniors played pivotal roles for the Mountaineers at various points throughout the season. Matthew Sharpstene boasted the team’s best scoring average at 70.73 and finished the year ranked at No. 55 in the nation. He registered nine top-25 finishes, including four top-15 finishes and four top-10 finishes. Sharpstene led WVU at the 2019 Championship with a 13th place finish and went on to become the first-ever Mountaineer to be named to the PING Division I All-Midwest Region team. Logan Perkins carried a 73.10 scoring average through 29 rounds in 2018-19. He played in both Big 12s and NCAA Regionals, leading the team in Louisville with a top-25 finish. Classmate Mark Goetz had a 73.73 stroke average through five tournaments and was selected as an alternate for the Louisville Regional.
W V U S P O R T S .C O M Run (66) and finished as the runner-up at the 2018 AJGA Justin Thomas Junior Championship and the 2016 AJGA Junior All-Star at The Virtues. Additionally, he was the runner-up at the 2016 Ohio High School State Championship and placed third at the event in 2017.

SOPHOMORES
The lone freshman on last year’s squad, Kurtis Grant started his career off with a bang after tying the program record with a 206 in his career debut at the Old Town Club Collegiate in September. He was in the lineup on four occasions and posted a 74.00 stroke average on the season. He registered three top-25 finishes and a trio of rounds in the 60s during his rookie campaign.
FRESHMEN
The group of Christian Boyd, Nico Lang and Trent Tipton arrives in Morgantown boasting success both in the U.S. and abroad. Charles Town native Christian Boyd becomes the fourth West Virginia native to compete for the Mountaineers since the program’s reinstatement. A West Virginia High School AAA Player of the Year, he garnered all-state honors in 2018 after claiming the state title in 2017 and was the Martinsburg Journal Player of the Year. Nico Lang becomes the second German on the WVU roster, and brings with him several international wins. He claimed the 2017 Bavarian U18 Championship, the 2016 German National Qualifier and the Austrian International Junior Championship and the 2016 German U18 National Qualifier. Additionally, Lang grabbed a top-10 finish at the 2017 German International Amateur Championship. Trent Tipton rounds out the freshmen this season. A native of Orient, Ohio, he ranked as the No. 41 junior golfer in the class of 2019 by Golfweek and was No. 73 on the Junior Golf Scoreboard. Tipton qualified for the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur after winning the Qualifier at Browns

SCHEDULE
WVU will make it’s season debut at the prestigious Gopher Invitational, hosted by Minnesota at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota, on Sept. 8-9. It marks the team’s first appearance at the challenging event in which 13 of the 14 teams in the field, including WVU, were represented at NCAA regionals last season. The Mountaineers return to most the events they played in last season, including the Old Town Club Collegiate (Wake Forest), Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic (Hawaii), the Gator Invitational (Florida), the Seminole Intercollegiate (Florida State), the Hootie at Bull’s Bay (South Carolina), the Irish Creek Collegiate (Davidson/Charlotte) and the Rutherford Intercollegiate (Penn State). West Virginia will host The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Oct. 7-8 at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia, after taking top honors at the event in 2018. The squad will also join UCF in hosting the Tavistock Collegiate Classic Oct. 20-22 at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Windemere, Florida. For the second straight season, WVU returns to the Big 12 Match Play in Houston, Texas. The 2020 Big 12 Championship returns to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in April. WVUGolf

2018-19 POSTSEASON
NOTEBOOK RANK ‘EM
The Mountaineers capped the 2017-18 season with a historic national ranking as the program finished at No. 90 for its first-ever top-100 appearance. The trend continued in the fall. After strong performances at The Old Town Club Collegiate, THP Mountaineer Invitational, the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational and the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic, WVU ended fall play at No. 37 in the Golfstat rankings, a program-best. The team posted third-place finishes at the Seminole Intercollegiate and the Rutherford Intercollegiate to end the year in the top 50 for the first time ever, holding at No. 48.
BE OUR GUEST
Just four years after competing at their first-ever conference championship, the Mountaineers welcomed league members to The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in April as WVU played host to the 2019 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship. Despite inclement weather forcing the cancelation of the first round, the team hosted a successful event that saw Oklahoma State take home the team title. Additionally, coach Sean Covich worked diligently with The Greenbrier and the PGA TOUR to get an exemption into The Greenbrier Classic for Big 12 Champion Hayden Springer of TCU. Then-sophomore Matthew Sharpstene led the Mountaineers, who finished 10th overall, with a 13th-place finish at the event.

SEAR HEADS TO THE RECORD BOOKS
Senior Max Sear made program history at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational in October 2018. The Unionville, Ontario, native carded 69-72 in the first two rounds and then he used four birdies, including three on the back nine, to record a 69 in the third round. He claimed medalist honors at the event, finishing at six-under-par with a 210. Sear became the first Mountaineer medalist in more than three decades, claiming the program’s first individual title of the new era. West Virginia shot two over as a team to take home the title at the event, marking the first time the Mountaineers were victorious at their home tournament.

HISTORY MADE
Sitting at No. 48 after the Big 12 Championship, the Mountaineers felt confident in their chances at a postseason bid. Hope turned into reality on May 1 when the Golf Channel announced WVU would join No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 2 seed Auburn, No. 3 seed North Florida, No. 4 seed Louisville, No. 5 seed Baylor, No. 6 seed Arkansas State, No. 7 seed Iowa State, No. 9 seed Arizona, No. 10 seed Mississippi State, No. 11 seed New Mexico, No. 12 seed Jacksonville State and No. 13 seed Southern Illinois at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, on May 13-15. Represented by senior Max Sear, juniors Philipp Matlari and Etienne Papineau and sophomores Logan Perkins and Matthew Sharpstene, along with alternate Mark Goetz, West Virginia came close to making more history. After finishing in the top five following the first day of competition, the Mountaineers slipped to sixth by the end of day three to finish two strokes shy of a National Championship bid.
SENIORS BIG FAREWELL
Max Sear and Tristan Nicholls may not have been the first seniors to depart the WVU golf program, but they certainly left a lasting impression. The two are believed to be the first Mountaineer letterwinners in program history, as freshman were not allowed to play varsity golf during the program’s prior days. The two international student-athletes – Sear from Canada, Nicholls from Australia – signed with West Virginia before the program existed and were a part of the first varsity season in Morgantown. The two excelled in the classroom as well, as Sear was a two-time Srixon-Cleveland Golf Scholar All-America honoree, and both earned Big 12 All-Academic Team accolades. Additionally, Sear played in every tournament during his four years and currently ranks second all-time in career scoring average with a 73.14.

PRESIDENT » WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
E. GORDON
D
GEE J.D., ED.D
r. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Recently, the website Great Value Colleges named him the nation’s top university president. In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the university’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1980, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (20012007). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations and committees including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business-Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, and he currently serves on the Board of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain.

In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, he was asked by Governor Kasich to chair both the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. And he served as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Gee presently serves on the council of presidents for the Southern University Research Association. Mentoring and inspiring youth is one of Gee’s highest priorities. He serves on the National Executive Board for Boy Scouts of America and on the Board of Trustees for the National 4-H Council. Through his leadership, West Virginia University has created a Youth Development Initiative office to expand its partnering relationships with Boy Scouts, 4-H and similar organizations. Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and received the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This year, Boy Scouts of America gave him the Silver Buffalo Award, Scouting’s top honor for adult volunteers. Gee is the co-author of over a dozen books, including his two most recent, “Leading Colleges and Universities” and “Land-Grant Universities for the Future.” In the summer of 2016, Gee announced his engagement to Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. In addition to that role, she is a practicing gynecologist and Gratis Faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
SHANE
I
LYONS ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT
n his fifth year as the director of athletics at West Virginia University, Shane Lyons’ vison for the athletic program is crystal clear and working. It’s a vision that focuses on the betterment of more than 500 student-athletes and the day-to-day needs that will help them succeed in the classroom and in competition. His open lines of communications have made him a popular role model for WVU athletes and coaches. His honest, fair and caring approach has energized an entire department, which has led to great success on and off the field. Whether it’s regularly scheduled meetings with the student-athletes or his open-door office policy, Lyons has his finger on the pulse of his student-athletes, coaches and staff. He devotes endless energy to his Climbing Higher facilities master plan that will keep West Virginia a strong Power 5 institution and position his department for growth and continued success. Lyons’ Climbing Higher facilities master plan isn’t about keeping up with the Joneses, it’s about taking what his department has, improving it and making it complete for the student-athlete. It’s an aggressive $100 million fundraising campaign centered on one of his core values, which is enhancing the student-athlete experience. From training, nutrition, medical and competitiveness, Lyons’ vision is for future success, building winning programs and growing WVU’s strong reputation across the country. He is about results, and he has already left a great deal of accomplishments in his rear-view mirror. In 2019, West Virginia recorded its highest APR score ever at 985 and again finished higher than the national average. The overall athletics department GPA was its highest at 3.26 with 13 teams over a 3.0 GPA for the year. Lyons commissioned and announced an Economic Impact study that showed Mountaineer Athletics produced more than $300 million to the state’s economy and more than $78 million to the local economy. And with the local economy in mind, Lyons’s department will assist with the formal opening of a new $45 million aquatic and track facility that will not only benefit WVU’s swimming and diving program, but also local high schools and the entire community. Among the Mountaineer highlights in the 2019 campaign were 43 All-Americans, 81 All-Conference performers, three conference championships, 159 Academic AllConference selections, seven teams to the NCAA postseason, a fourth-place finish for the Heisman Trophy and 22 professional draft picks among all sports. In addition, Lyons’ department hosted for the first time in history both the NCAA Rifle Championships and the Big 12 golf championship as well as the NCAA baseball regionals for the first time since 1955. In total, WVU athletics hosted more than 160 events during the 2018-19 season. From 2015-18, he spearheaded and finished more than $100 million in fan enhancements to Milan Puskar Stadium and the WVU Coliseum, completed a second phase Coliseum renovations, bringing the arena up to current ADA seating code, and for the first-time ever, introduced a second video board to Milan Puskar Stadium to provide information and improve fan entertainment. Overseeing 18 varsity sports, a self-sustaining department budget of more than $93 million and 250 employees, under Lyons’ leadership, WVU athletics has implemented a Clinical and Sport Psychology unit with a full-time director and professional interns, added specialized learning assistants to the Student-Athlete Development unit and entered into a partnership with WVU Medicine’s Neuroscience Department to assist in the training and recovery of student-athletes, all emphasizing his overall commitment to the well-being and performance of Mountaineer student-athletes. Ask him and he’ll tell you it’s not his department, but West Virginia’s department, and he can tell you his vision to improve it not only for the coming year, but for three, five, seven and 10 years down the road. He cares, and the proof lies in what he has already accomplished in four years. The director hates to be last, and he rolls up his sleeves every day to make sure WVU is not last in anything. Additionally, his work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team, as well as the Big 12 Conference and other national committees, has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He currently serves on the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee. In 2018, he chaired the overall athletic directors committee for the Big 12, was named again to the NCAA Division I Council and will serve as chair of the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee. He is also a member of the college football competition committee and locally serves on the board of directors for Mylan Park i n Morgantown. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction of the Crimson Tide Athletic program. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, management of the day-to-day operations of the department and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on
conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of rules and interpretations for the 25 membership service representatives and was the staff liaison to various NCAA standing committees. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Lyons, the University’s 12th athletic director, and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke. Cameron is a member of the football team at Akron and Brooke attends Morgantown High School.
