MOUNTAINEER
FACILITIES ATHLETICS
With the addition of the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range in 2018, the Mountaineers now have the luxury of shooting their home matches in three venues: the WVU Coliseum, the WVU Shell Building and the WVU Rifle Range. For the first time in program history, the NCAA Rifle Championships was held in Morgantown last season, as the WVU Coliseum played host to the two-day event at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range. A two-day crowd of 2,215 fans was in attendance, a championship record. They will be hosting the NCAA Rifle Championships again in 2025.
The WVU Rifle Range, which is now used as the team’s day-to-day practice venue, reflects the long-term success enjoyed by the 19time national champion Mountaineers. A unique aspect of the range is the ability for shooters to work simultaneously. Team members can shoot in the smallbore position at the 50-foot targets, while others can shoot at the 10m air rifle targets at the same time.
In 2021, West Virginia University opened its new Varsity Sports Performance Center at the WVU Coliseum Sports Complex. The Performance Center is the home for strength and conditioning, training, rehabilitation and nutrition for all WVU Olympic sport programs. More than 400 student-athletes benefit from the center, which enhances WVU’s commitment to compete at a national level.

SEASON PREVIEW
Prior to the start of the 2022-23 season, West Virginia University coach Jon Hammond gives an outlook on this year’s team and what steady improvements the team needs to make to capture the program’s nation-best 20th NCAA title.
On his 2022-23 roster and his assessment of preseason practices: We’re excited for this year. anytime you add one of the best shooters in the country and an olympic medalist (Mary Tucker), that’s obviously going to change your team. i think our team makeup has changed with bringing Mary in, and so far through preseason, practice has been good. There are still things we want to improve on. i think sometimes the pros and cons of few people leaving and few people coming in is you have consistency, you have a roster that you know and sometimes it’s harder to mix things up a little bit, too.
But i think another huge difference is having JP (as sistant coach Jean-Pierre Lucas) here. it’s always sad when someone leaves. Soren (Butler) was awesome. We did a lot of great things in his five years here, and change is inevitable. it’s part of the business. i was super excited to bring JP back, and as every coach is different, he’s different and brings some
thing different to the team. i think what makes him such a good coach is his work ethic, his drive and his dedication to all the small details. We’ve kind of still been adjusting to everything. He’s learning the team, and they’re learning about him.
We’re looking forward to getting the season start ed. Preseason is preseason. You never really know what’s going to happen. We’re fully aware there are some great teams out there that have been better than us for a few years now, and we kind of still playing catch up. But we’re looking forward to fighting this year and working as hard as we can to try and close that gap back up and seeing what we can achieve.
On the impact of adding senior Mary Tucker and her championship pedigree to the team:
We’ve gone quite a while now where we don’t have anyone that has experienced winning a national championship, to know what it’s like and the things you need to do for that to happen. Mary does. You can see how she trains and her expectations of herself – her striving for perfect but also the confidence she has in her abilities and her ability to perform.
But also, JP – JP was not only a five-time national Championship winner, but it was right here. i think bringing those two in together, they’re kind of coming in saying ‘Yeah, we can win a national championship. it’s not going to be easy, but in order to do so, these are the things we have to do.’ it’s lots of little things like challenging the rest of the team, pushing the team a little bit more.
For Mary, it’s just having someone who shoot ing higher scores on a daily basis in the range. now, everyone on the team has someone to look towards and push to get better or to chase. For some, it may take some pressure off their shoulders in matches to not have that expectation to try and be the top scorer.
and JP, as well, is going to challenge them and push them for us to get better and improve.
On
sophomore Natalie Perrin and how she can build off winning GARC Rookie of the Year:
natalie had a great freshman year. i think her attitude is one of her strengths. With her work ethic to come and train but also her attitude towards matches, she’s able to bring her best to competi tion. She’s not afraid of competition. Honestly, i think we’re just looking for her to get better.
Smallbore was still pretty new for her last year, and she improved a lot, but there are sometimes a lot of easy ways to improve as a freshman because you’re getting coaching on a daily basis. You’re getting training on a daily basis, and you’re around

All times are Eastern and subject to change
a team, which often you haven’t been before. You’re often get new equipment, and you have all these extra resources. So, freshman year, while it is challenging and everything is new and you’re adjusting to college; if you’re able to do that well, there are so many other changes that can create quicker improvement.
after that, during your sophomore, junior and senior years, you’re adjusted more to college life, and i think that becomes easier. Your life balance becomes easier, but sometimes, the quick-and-easy improvements aren’t there anymore. So, it comes down to just getting better, just putting the hours in and working harder. i think she’s ready for that, she’s aware of that.
We’re excited to see how she can continue to improve and build off that freshman year. as you go through the years, you have to dig deeper and deeper to find those ways to improve. We’re defi nitely confident that she’s going to be able to do that, and i think she knows what she needs to do and has a great attitude, like i said, to get to work and do those things.
On his team’s experience and depth heading into the new season:
We had a very deep team last year. There are defi nitely some that had their challenges last year that have shown improvement already. They’re working hard and having a good attitude, and hopefully, we’ll see improvements from them. if you go back and look at our averages, a very large amount of them are all very similar in where they’re at with
scores and averages. So, we’ll have to see how things progress, and i think those that are the most committed, work the hardest and have the best attitudes will be the ones that probably show the most improvement and will rise to the top as the year goes on.
On the rise of competition in collegiate rifle and his outlook on the team’s schedule:
We have to shoot against all the best teams. We’re excited to have our Fall Classic. We’re bringing in the three best teams from last year here to campus to have a tournament-style weekend.
The standard last year went up and up. every record got broken last year, and not just once, but multiple teams broke them multiple times. and it was by those three teams – TCU, Kentucky and alaska. They all broke or tied one of the different records at one time. That’s going to be a big challenge.
We had a really good run for a while, and teams had to figure out ways to get better and catch us. We’re kind of in that boat now, but we’ve continued to improve. oftentimes, it’s a challenge as a coach to look and say, ‘The last two years, we’ve finished sixth place and fourth place at nCaas, but our season average has been getting better.’ and we’ve been shooting good scores, but other teams have been doing it faster. There is a cap, there is a perfect score. We’re getting closer and closer to that, so to find improvement gets harder and harder.
We’re going to get challenged on our schedule. We have those three teams coming in for the Fall Clas
sic, and then, we’re going to go up to alaska and compete against them up at their place for a couple days. Kentucky will be there for one day, as well. our last conference match will be Kentucky, which often decides the regular season. and then, conference championships and nCaas will cap the year.
So, we’re going to see those teams a good bit. There are many other good teams out there as well, including ole Miss. We’re going to go to air Force, who also is a team that finished ahead of us last year.
We have to challenge ourselves and shoot against the best teams. We need to see where we stack up, try to make improvements, go with confidence and go from there.
on overarching message to his team this season:
i think consistency is important, for sure. naturally, you want to peak at the end of the year. if we’re going to shoot a school record, we want to do it in February and March, not in September or october.
We need to be consistent, but we also have to show steady improvement. That’s going to come from working harder, raising our standards – and not just in the scores we shoot in matches. i think just our standards for our actions and our behav iors; how we practice, how much we practice and just how we are as a team.
i think there are definitely things we can improve there, and if we can show steady improvement in many small areas throughout the year, not only do i think consistency will come, but we’ll be able to peak and be our best towards the end of the season.

And he served as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Gee presently serves on the council of presidents for the Southern University Research Association and as a member of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration.
Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a
