Commissioner Brett Yormark begins his second year at the helm of the conference. The Big 12 Conference is comprised of 14 members – Baylor, BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UCF and West Virginia. The Big 12 is widely regarded as one of the top tennis conferences in the country. The conference regularly sends multiple teams to the NCAA Tennis Championships with Texas winning the national championship in 2021 and 2022. Seven teams represented the Big 12 Conference at the 2023 NCAA Tennis Championships, while two teams reached the quarterfinals: Texas and Iowa State. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

“THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE IS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST CONFERENCES IN THE NATION, AND WE COMPETE AGAINST SOME OF THE TOP TEAMS IN COLLEGE TENNIS. IT’S EXCITING TO BE A PART OF THE BIG 12, BECAUSE WE ARE CHALLENGED AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. IT IS NOT EASY TO COMPETE IN THE BIG 12, AND IT NEVER WILL BE. BUT IT SETS AN EXTREMELY HIGH BAR FOR US, AND THAT’S WHY WE ALL DECIDED TO COME TO WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY – TO BE CHALLENGED AT THAT HIGHEST LEVEL, TO WORK AND BUILD TOWARDS THAT AND TO, ULTIMATELY, SEE HOW FAR WE CAN PUSH THIS PROGRAM.” – MIHA LISAC

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Choosing to become a Mountaineer is special. Without a professional sports team in the state, the 1.8 million people throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics. No school helps its student-athletes more than the people at WVU. Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their university to news, media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. If you take advantage of these opportunities, it can have a positive effect, not only on your career as a student-athlete at West Virginia, but also on your life after you have donned the Old Gold and Blue.

“WEST VIRGINIA IS A SPECIAL PLACE, UNLIKE ANY OTHER. I FEEL EXTREMELY PRIVILEGED TO BE IN THE POSITION THAT I AM IN. I AM ABLE TO HELP THESE YOUNG LADIES MATURE AND PREPARE FOR LIFE AFTER TENNIS. I WANT TO BUILD SOMETHING SPECIAL TOGETHER, AND WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT HERE AT WVU.” – MIHA LISAC

IN THE COMMUNITY Representing West Virginia University, the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia in a charitable manner is important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers are constantly involved in community service activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the WVU Children’s Hospital and the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which makes the team aware of any volunteer openings in the area. The women’s tennis team also hosts youth camps and clinics throughout the year in order to involve the community with the program. Each year, the Mountaineer tennis team also hosts the Martha Thorn Invitational and conducts a charitable giving initiative to benefit local outreaches and causes in the Morgantown community. Becoming successful and positive role models on and off the court are important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers give back to Morgantown and its surrounding communities every chance they get.

“COMMUNITY SERVICE IS ONE OF THE MOST CRUCIAL THINGS THAT WE DO. THIS IS A VERY SMALL, TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY. COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR US IS A PART OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS US SO WELL. NOT JUST US AS THE TENNIS TEAM BUT THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT OVERALL. IT IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE CONTINUE TO STAY CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNITY AND THAT WE CONTINUE TO SHOW OUR APPRECIATION.” – MIHA LISAC

MIHA LISAC Head Coach • 11th Season

Miha Lisac enters his eleventh season as the head coach of the West Virginia University tennis program. The 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac previously spent six seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he built one of the top Division I programs in the nation. Lisac is a former student-athlete at Georgia State and served as the men’s assistant coach for two years. In 2007, Lisac was named head coach of the women’s tennis team at his alma mater. While at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, back-to-back CAA Championship final appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record as a head coach stands at 129-174. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009 when he guided Georgia State to the first NCAA Championship appearance in school history and was named CAA Coach of the Year.

AT WEST VIRGINIA

In his tenth season as head coach, Lisac guided the Mountaineers to a No. 51 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking, which was the highest team ranking in program history. WVU was ranked in the top 75 three weeks in a row at No. 62, 70 and 72, respectively. Additionally, West Virginia’s 11-4 start during the 2023 spring slate is the best record since the 2010 season when the Mountaineers started 12-2. Continuing the program firsts, Lisac led West Virginia to victory over Kansas State, 4-2, for the first time in program history at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown. This also marked the first Big 12 victory since 2018 when the Mountaineers defeated Iowa

State, 4-1. West Virginia finished its 2023 spring season with an overall record of 11-12, facing seven opponents that were ranked in the top 50. Seven Mountaineers were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in 2023 and achieved an overall team GPA of 3.54. Also, junior Momoko Nagato and sophomores Camilla Bossi and Michaela Kucharova were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team for their combined efforts on the court and in the classroom. Lisac and the Mountaineers finished the 2021-22 season with a 7-17 overall record. The primarily young team came up just short of defeating seven nationally ranked opponents in the Big 12 conference. WVU defeated one of the top doubles teams in the country from Baylor, defeated Kansas in doubles competition and made a hard-fought run to defeat opponents from TCU, Kansas and Iowa State. The Mountaineers were led by freshman Camilla Bossi who finished the fall and spring slate with a combined 38 wins, followed by junior Ting-Pei Chang with 27 wins and freshman Kendall Kovick with 24 wins. Academically, senior Anastasiia Bovolskaia and sophomore Momoko Nagato were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Lisac’s eighth season at WVU provided him with some unprecedented challenge which were brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. West Virginia’s fall tournament schedule was shortened as the Mountaineers competed in one event of the inaugural Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Circuit. In the event, newcomer Momoko Nagato earned a trio of wins to claim a second-place finish and catapult WVU into the spring season. Beginning the season a month later than usual, WVU rattled off three consecutive victories to open its dual season, including a sweep over Cleveland State to open the 2021 campaign. The Mountaineers faced five ranked opponents to open Big 12 play, before injuries and roster limitations forced the team to end its season on April 7. West Virginia concluded the season with a 3-6 mark. In his seventh season with the Mountaineers, Lisac led the team to a 7-3 mark and the first winning season since 2010, when WVU finished the year with a record of 17-7. West Virginia began the season with a pair of sweeps before rattling off five more wins to begin the season

7-0. It marked the best start to a season since 1986, when WVU began the year 12-0. Following a rocky start to Big 12 Conference play, Lisac and the Mountaineers saw their season cut short in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lisac and the Mountaineers finished the 2019 season with a record of 10-12, the best mark WVU had achieved since 2010 (17-7). WVU competed against six ranked opponents in 2019, including four in the top 25 nationally, and swept four opponents. West Virginia’s four sweeps were the most since 2008, when WVU finished the season with eight. Led by two 30-win seasons from Anne-Sophie Courteau and Anastasiia Bovolskaia, six Mountaineers finished with 15 or more wins, five finished with 20 or more wins and three finished with 25 or more wins. Seven Mountaineers were named to Academic All-Big 12 teams in 2019, including five student-athletes who were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the most in the Big 12 conference. Abigail Rosiello capped the season by being named to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District and All-America Teams, West Virginia’s second selection in as many years. West Virginia wrapped up the 2018 season with a 7-14 overall record while competing against at least eight teams ranked in the top 50 of the ITA/ Oracle team rankings for the second consecutive year. The highlight of the campaign came with a 4-1 win over Iowa State, WVU’s first Big 12 conference win in program history. The win solidified the program’s growth under Lisac’s watch and marked another milestone in his goal to become consistent Big 12 contenders. In addition to leading WVU past in-state rival Marshall for the second straight year, West Virginia also saw four Mountaineers post at least 20 wins in singles and doubles play during the year. Paula Goetz capped the season by being named to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District and All-America Teams, the Mountaineers’ first selection in program history. WVU concluded the 2017 campaign with a 4-16 overall record, facing eight opponents that were ranked in the top 50. Lisac led the Mountaineers to a win over Marshall, ending the Thundering Herd’s four-match winning streak in the series. The season also saw two Mountaineers, Christina

WVUTennis

Jordan and Habiba Shaker, head to the ITA All-American Championships for the first time under Lisac. In the spring, Shaker led the team in singles play with a record of 8-5 at the No. 1 position, while Paula Goetz paced the Mountaineers in doubles with a 9-7 record. West Virginia capped its 2016 season with a 6-15 overall record, competing against seven opponents ranked in the nation’s top 50 throughout the spring season. Lisac guided the Mountaineers to a No. 75 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking for what was believed to be the first time in program history. In that same week, West Virginia edged Cornell in a 4-3 battle for the first time since 1995 to tie the all-time series record at two apiece on Feb. 27, 2016. West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 overall record. The Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010 and earned the program’s 450th win at Toledo on Jan. 31. In the spring season, WVU competed against nine ranked opponents, with its last five competitors ranked in the nation’s Top 40. Hailey Barrett earned her first victory over a ranked opponent in 2015, defeating Baylor’s then-ranked No. 82 Rachael Jakes-Baker in straight sets. Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles wins in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record. Habiba Shaker also held a team-best mark in doubles play (12-5) as she teamed up with Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez, Barrett and Lewis throughout the spring season. In his first season at West Virginia, Lisac led the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Atlantic Region entering the spring season. The WVU duo finished the fall season at 5-8 and battled their way to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia. Vivian Tsui tallied three straight wins at the USTA/ ITA Regionals and made it further in the main singles draw bracket than any other Mountaineer, after surviving the qualifying bracket. In the spring season, freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole led the team with a combined 24 wins in singles and doubles. Mrgole posted a team-high 13 wins in the spring.

Jane Little Memorial Award This award, a silver bowl donated by the West Virginia University Foundation, is given each year to a member on the women’s tennis team who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and team spirit. Jane Little, a Charleston, West Virginia, native, was a member of the first women’s intercollegiate team to compete for WVU. Jane was not the best tennis player on the team, but she displayed the best sportsmanship and was the most dedicated. When she died in October, 1977, her teammates from the 1973-74 team established this award in her memory.

WVU VICE PRESIDENT/DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

WREN BAKER

West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee named Wren Baker as WVU’s Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on Nov. 30, 2022. WVU’s 13th director of athletics came to Morgantown from the University of North Texas, where he had been the associate vice president and athletics director since 2016. With previous stops at Missouri, Memphis, Northwest Missouri and Rogers State, Baker brought more than 20 years of experience to WVU. Baker has oversight of 18 varsity sports, a department budget of more than $90 million, approximately 250 employees and nearly 500 student-athletes. In his first year at West Virginia, Baker has hit the ground running and has never looked back. He has traveled the state to learn its culture, met Mountaineer fans from all over the world, fundraised for his department, addressed budget concerns, put his touches on a new premium club space at the Coliseum and even hired coaches in women’s and men’s basketball. While he is a native Oklahoman, he has certainly been adopted as the newest Mountaineer by West Virginia fans. As an athletics director, he has now led 20 head coaching searches, and his hires have a combined 75% winning percentage. At North Texas, seven Mean Green programs (men’s cross country, volleyball, women’s soccer, football, men’s basketball, women’s golf and softball) combined to win 17 conference or division championships during Baker’s tenure, and the overall athletics department’s winning percentage in the last year was the best in the modern era. In 2019, every Mean Green team achieved a winning season for the first time in school history. UNT also reached new heights in the classroom under Baker’s leadership, posting its top APR scores and four consecutive department Graduation Success Rate (GSR) records. For the first time ever, every Mean Green team recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher with the Spring 2022 department GPA hitting a 3.206 average. Baker led record fundraising years at North Texas as the school registered its four best fundraising years in its history, and the overall top five largest gifts ever at UNT came under Baker’s leadership. He guided North Texas athletics to a school record for fundraising in a single year, nearly doubling the previous department record. UNT ticket revenue increased by 125% under Baker, and football attendance grew by 71%, while men’s and women’s basketball crowds grew by more than 60%. Additional achievements at North Texas included a five-year strategic plan, new 20-year

facilities master plan and lucrative contracts for multimedia rights, licensing, apparel and equipment. Baker also led the charge to renovate eight different UNT athletic facilities, while spearheading the design and fundraising for three new facilities including a track and field/soccer stadium, golf practice facility and an indoor practice building. One of the biggest moments in the history of North Texas Athletics came under his watch, when UNT was invited to join the American Athletic Conference beginning in July 2023. Prior to North Texas, Baker was the deputy director of athletics at Missouri from 2015 to 2016, serving as the top advisor and chief of staff. He was responsible for assisting with all aspects of administration and led the external unit, helping Mizzou to a record fundraising year. He also served as the interim director of athletics at Missouri before moving on to North Texas. Before Missouri, he spent time at Memphis from 2013-15 as deputy athletics director. He secured the largest gift in the university’s history as Memphis posted its best fundraising year ever. While setting a school record for fundraising, major gifts and multimedia rights revenue, Baker also grew Memphis’ scholarship fund, was the sport administrator for men’s basketball and worked closely with football during a two-year run that included the Tigers’ first conference championship in football in more than four decades. From 2011-13, Baker was athletics director at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State, where he secured the largest gift in the

athletics department’s history for improvements to the football stadium. Under Baker, Northwest Missouri saw its revenues increase by 60%, and he hired head football coach Adam Dorrel, who led the Bearcats to three consecutive national championships. From 2006-11, Baker served as the first athletics director at Rogers State in Claremore, Oklahoma, where he was also the school’s first men’s basketball coach. His team went 20-11 in his only season at the helm, and RSU teams combined to post a nearly 70% winning percentage despite being a start-up athletic program. During his tenure, Baker developed a full-scale collegiate athletics program. In 2005, he was the principal and athletics director for Valliant Public Schools and, at age 26, was the youngest principal in Oklahoma history. Originally fom Valliant, Oklahoma, Baker earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2001 where he was a member of the honors program. He went on to earn his master’s degree in education leadership from Oklahoma State in 2003. While at Oklahoma State, Baker was a graduate assistant and basketball operations assistant for the Cowboys’ men’s basketball program under legendary head coach Eddie Sutton. During Baker’s time with OSU, the Cowboys posted a 102-30 record, reaching four NCAA tournaments, and advanced to the 2004 Final Four and the 2005 Sweet Sixteen. Baker and his wife, Heather, a Bokchito, Oklahoma, native, have two daughters, Addisyn and Reagan.
