t’s hard to believe that we’re now two seasons removed from the West Virginia basketball team’s epic run in March 2010 to a BIG EAST tournament title and eventual NCAA Final Four appearance. Even harder to believe is Deniz Kilicli, a 6-foot-9 forward from Turkey, who also played on that team as a freshman and didn’t make his debut until late in that season, is now an upperclassman. Yes, that’s right, he is now a junior and ready to follow in the footsteps of his former teammates like Da’Sean Butler, Wellington Smith and Joe Mazzulla and finally lead a team of his own. “I’ve been the youngest guy here these past two years,” Kilicli said. “But now it’s time I step up and get the younger kids to play together.” According to Kilicli, this year it is vitally important for him to be a good role model on the court for his new teammates. Certainly, anyone could see why he would feel this way, as six freshmen have been added the 2011-12 roster, making half the squad comprised of rookies. “Knowing what coach Huggins wants us to do and what he expects from us is so important in leading the younger kids,” said Kilicli. “We tell them what to expect so they know what’s going on.

“Being the best leader I can is definitely my biggest, personal goal this season.” So, what exactly does the two-year veteran think makes a good leader? “To me, being a leader means being more vocal; something I never really had to be in the past,” he explained. “I feel like I have to do everything right the first time, paying really close attention to every little detail.” Those things are something Kilicli really focused on during the off-season. In the past, he has traveled back to Turkey to play in the national league, but he opted to spend the summer in Morgantown to work on his game – perfecting it to get everything right the first time. Kilicli said his workouts consisted

mainly of shooting, rebounding and strength and conditioning. “When you don’t have any games to play, it’s really a great time to work on the craft of the game,” Kilicli said. Kilicli also said he chose to stay in West Virginia in order to work on his weaknesses from last season and prepare for what he believes will be the team’s hardest schedule yet. With non-conference matchups against Akron, Kent State, Kansas State and Miami, followed by tournament play in Las Vegas against Missouri State and Baylor, both top 25 teams, the Mountaineers will have to hit the ground running according to Kilicli. “It’s definitely a harder opening schedule, especially for the rookies,” he noted. “It’s harder than when I was a freshman, or when Darryl Bryant and Kevin Jones were freshmen,” Kilicli said. “But it’s going to be great for the rookies because they’re going to be prepared for BIG EAST play in January.” Although he is familiar with the BIG EAST, the excitement Kilicli has when simply even speaking about January and conference ball is hard to miss. “It’s like no matter who you play, you’re playing against the professionals already since every team has either two or three players that are going to end up in the NBA,” Kilicli said. “You’re playing with the best-of-the-best.” No matter how equally impressive each BIG EAST team is when it comes to competition, there is already one matchup Kilicli is waiting for - January 28 when the Mountaineers play host to the Pitt Panthers. “I always look forward to playing Pitt, especially when they come here,” Kilicli said. “The environment and rivalry is so great.” This is understandable, as any diehard Mountaineer fan would agree the atmosphere is unparalleled when Pitt is in town for any reason, and it could be a major contributing factor as to why Kilicli chose to come to West Virginia in the first place. “The people here are different than anywhere else. They’ve always really helped me and have been so supportive of me, and they really make me never want to leave,” Kilicli said. “I really can’t thank everyone here enough.” Although it has only been two years since Kilicli first joined the Mountaineer family, it seems like he’s had a heart made of Old Gold and Blue forever. From a BIG EAST Championship and NCAA Final Four appearances his rookie year, to his aspirations as he prepares to take his team to the court this upcoming season, it’s evident Kilicli has followed the right country roads to Morgantown. “I’m really simple,” Kilicli said. “I play basketball, and I belong here.”

proven success as a program builder, recruiter and game strategist who has won 691 games as a collegiate head coach, Bob Huggins has directed his alma mater to 101 victories, the 2010 NCAA Final Four, the 2010 BIG EAST championship and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances during his first four seasons in Morgantown. Huggins, a 1977 graduate of West Virginia University, was introduced as WVU’s 21st men’s basketball coach on Good Friday, April 6, 2007. Huggins, 58, has compiled a 691-253 (.732) record entering his 30th season as a head coach, which includes stints at Walsh College (1980-83), Akron (1984-1989), Cincinnati (1989-2005), Kansas State (2006-07) and West Virginia (2007-present). He ranks fourth in total victories and 10th in winning percentage among active Division I head coaches. Huggins’ teams have participated in postseason play in 26 of his 29 seasons, including 19 NCAA tournaments. His squads have won 20 or more games in all but four of his 29 campaigns, including 30 or more twice, and he has averaged 23.8 victories a season. Last season, Huggins led the Mountaineers to their fourth consecutive NCAA appearance, finishing with a No. 20 ranking in the final AP poll. Huggins became the first WVU coach to win 20 games in each of his first four seasons. The Mountaineers finished with 21 victories, including 11 BIG EAST wins. Along the way, WVU defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 8 Purdue, No. 11 Louisville, No. 13 Georgetown and No. 16 Connecticut. Off the court, for the second year in a row, West Virginia finished ranked in the top 10 percent of all basketball teams in the 2011 NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). In 2009-10, Huggins guided West Virginia to one of the most memorable seasons in school history. The Mountaineers reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time since 1959 and won their first BIG EAST championship. WVU recorded a school record 31 victories and also posted a school-best 13 BIG EAST victories, finishing the season ranked No. 3 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. For the third year in a row, Huggins was named state coach of the year by the West Virginia State Sports Writers Association. Off the court, the WVU men’s basketball team ranked in the top 10 percent of all squads in the 2010 NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). In addition, the BIG EAST awarded WVU the team excellence award for the highest grade point average among BIG EAST men’s basketball teams. In 2008-09, Huggins led the Mountaineers to 23 victories in his second season at WVU, advancing to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. Huggins became the second Mountaineer coach to win 20 games in his first two seasons in Morgantown. The Mountaineers reached the

semifinals of the BIG EAST championship for the second year in a row. After the season, Huggins was named state coach of the year by the West Virginia State Sports Writers Association, his second consecutive honor. In his first season at WVU, Huggins took the Mountaineers to the NCAA Sweet 16, becoming the first Mountaineer coach to take a team that far in NCAA tournament play in his first season. With 26 victories, he won more games in his first year than any other coach in WVU history. West Virginia tied the school record for BIG EAST victories with 11. After finishing the season with a No. 17 ranking, Huggins was named state coach of the year by the W.Va. State Sportswriters Association. Following his first season at WVU, Huggins signed a 10year contract extension that will keep the veteran coach at his alma mater until his 65th birthday. Huggins also had his sixth first round NBA draft pick and fourth lottery pick when WVU’s Joe Alexander was selected as the eighth pick by the Milwaukee Bucks. Alexander’s first-round selection was WVU’s highest NBA pick since Ron Williams went in the first round of the 1968 NBA Draft. Huggins has coached 18 NBA draft selections as well as 10 All-Americans. He has also guided 54 all-conference selections in Division I. Alexander was just one of four Huggins’ players to earn major awards in 2008. Alex Ruoff was named a thirdteam Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA, one of just 15 players named nationally and the only student-athlete from a BIG EAST school. Darris Nichols earned the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award, while Ted Talkington was named the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Ruoff also earned the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. On Dec. 22, 2007, Huggins became the 29th Division I coach (minimum 10 years coaching in Division I) to reach 600 victories when the Mountaineers won at Canisius. In 2006-07, Huggins led Kansas State to 23 wins, the Wildcats’ most wins in 19 years. K-State broke an eightyear postseason drought when Huggins led the Wildcats to the NIT second round. Huggins earned USBWA District VI Coach of the Year honors as well as Big 12 Coach of the Year by the Kansas City Star. Huggins elevated the Cincinnati program to among the nation’s elite. He registered a 399-127 record (.759) during his tenure, making him the winningest coach in terms of victories and percentage in the school’s rich basketball history. The Bearcats advanced to postseason play in each of his 16 seasons, reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament three times and in 1992, appearing in the Final Four. Huggins directed Cincinnati to 10 conference regular season titles and eight league tournament titles. Huggins earned the Ray Meyer Award as the Conference USA Coach of the Year a record three times (1998, 1999 and 2000), and was a unanimous choice as the Conference USA Coach of the Decade. He was selected as national coach of the year by ESPN.com in 2002. He was named co-national coach of the year by The Sporting News in 2005 and was Basketball Times’ National Coach of the Year in 1998. He earned national coach of the year recognition from Hoop Scoop in 1992 and Playboy in 1993. In 2002, Huggins suffered a major heart attack on the last Saturday of September but was present for the team’s first practice two weeks later and coached the Bearcats with the same intensity that has become his trademark. Huggins earned his first head coaching assignment at Walsh College (now University), an NAIA school in

GINS North Canton, Ohio, in 1980 at the age of 27. A program with just two winning seasons in the previous 17 years, Huggins transformed the Cavalier program into one of the best in the NAIA ranks in just three short seasons. He compiled a 71-26 record (.732) from 1980 to 1983, twice guiding the team to the postseason, including their first-ever NAIA national tournament appearance. After a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Central Florida in 1983-84, Huggins accepted his first Division I head coaching position at Akron in 1984. He quickly resurrected another program that had fallen on difficult times, as he guided the Zips to a 97-46 (.678) overall record and to postseason play in three of his five seasons. The program posted 20 or more wins in a season on four occasions. After a 12-14 mark in his first season, Huggins led Akron to its first NCAA tournament appearance and conference title at the Division I level in 1986 with a 22-8 record. In guiding the team to its highest win total in 13 seasons, Huggins was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. He continued his success with the first of three consecutive 21-win seasons in 1987 and an appearance in the first round of the NIT. Huggins capped his five-year tenure at Akron in 1989 by helping the Zips to their second trip to the NIT in 1989 with a 21-8 record. After his playing career at West Virginia, Huggins began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at WVU for his college coach, Joedy Gardner, in 1977. He moved to Ohio State the following season to assist head coach Eldon Miller. During his twoyear stint from 1978-80, Huggins helped the Buckeyes to a 40-20 (.667) record and a pair of postseason appearances, including the second round of the 1980 NCAA tournament. Huggins was a three-year all-Ohio selection and the 1972 Ohio Player of the Year while playing for his father, Charles, at Indian Valley South High in Gnadenhutten, Ohio. He first attended Ohio University but transferred to West Virginia after his freshman season. Huggins was a three-year letterman for the Mountaineers under Gardner from 197577. As a senior and tri-captain, he helped the squad to an 18-11 overall record and a tie for the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League (ECBL) Western division title. In addition to helping the team earn its highest win total in nine seasons, he was named MVP after pacing the squad with 3.8 assists per game average. A two-time Academic All-American, Huggins graduated from West Virginia magna cum laude in 1977 and received his master’s in health administration from WVU in 1978. Huggins was born in Morgantown on Sept. 21, 1953. He and his wife, June, have two daughters, Jenna Leigh and Jacqueline.

Program Enhancement The Mountaineer Athletic Club provides a number of opportunities for supporters to help offset the escalating cost of operational cost incurred throughout the athletic department. With a Strategic Framework for the Future now in place, WVU is committed to excelling in five key areas: academic excellence, research and innovation, diversity, global engagement, and enhancing the wellbeing and quality of life of our citizens. Dr. Clements has announced several initiatives in support of these strategic planning goals, including: adding 100 new faculty members to decrease the student-faculty ratio and support core and niche academic and research curriculums; building a new student health facility to increase wellness efforts; dedicating capital funds to expand outdoor recreational space for students; and increasing research to strengthen the University’s position as an economic engine as well as a leader in fields such as energy, biometrics, and health sciences. Additional priorities are to continue offering world-class health care and – through WVU’s Top-10 nationally ranked Rural Health Program – remain committed to increasing state outreach in the health sciences. To that end, WVU recently announced plans to establish a WVU School for Public Health to train the next generation of public health professionals, conduct highquality population health research, and help the state confront preventable health threats that increase health care costs and shorten lives. Other goals include finding more efficient and effective ways to use technology to drive progress, increasing the diversity of WVU’s learning community and developing an even broader global focus in preparing students for new international opportunities. Other initiatives focus on increasing student retention, increasing WVU’s doctoral program enrollment, enhancing leadership development and increasing operating funds. This momentum has carried over to record gains in enrollment, research and private giving. Student enrollment across all campuses reached more than 32,000; research contract and grant awards for the past two years averaged an all-time high of $176 million; and annual private giving to WVU reached an all-time high of nearly $100 million this past year. The University was also recognized as among the six percent of institutions in the country that the Carnegie Foundation classifies as highly engaged in service, and as one of the four best flagship universities in the country for access by the Education Trust. In addition to overseeing WVU and its divisional campuses, Dr. Clements chairs the boards of the WVU Research Corporation, the West Virginia United Health System, and the WVU Hospitals. In total, WVU and its affiliates represent a $2.3 billion enterprise and employ more than 18,000 people. Dr. Clements also serves as an ex-officio member of the WVU Foundation and WVU Alumni Association boards, and is active with national higher education organizations such as the Association of Public LandGrant Universities and the American Council on Education.

Regionally, he is a board member of the National Energy Technology Laboratory Regional University Alliance. He is cochair of the Economic Development Team of the Power of 32, a visioning initiative across 32 counties in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. He also co-chaired the WV Higher Education Policy Commission’s Diversity Initiative Council and currently co-chairs the WV Higher Education Policy Commission’s College Completion Task Force, as well as serves on the board of the West Virginia Business Roundtable. On a national level, he was nominated and selected to participate in the 81st Joint Civilian Orientation Conference through the U.S. Department of Defense, and invited by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to join a select 15-member Innovation Advisory Board that will guide a study of U.S. economic competitiveness and innovation. Before joining the Mountaineer family, Dr. Clements served as provost and vice president at Towson University, the secondlargest public university in Maryland. Under his leadership, Towson developed academic and student support programs that led to impressive increases in enrollment as well as retention and graduation rates. Towson’s externally-funded research increased by 36 percent during Dr. Clements’ tenure as provost. Prior to becoming provost, he served as Towson University’s vice president for economic and community outreach and as the Robert W. Deutsch Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. He was a four-time recipient of Towson’s Faculty Member of the Year Award given by students at the University. Dr. Clements has an academic background in computer science. He earned a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. and Ph.D. in operations analysis from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), as well as an M.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University. The fourth edition of his project management textbook was published in four languages and used in multiple countries; the fifth edition was recently released. At WVU, Dr. Clements is a tenured professor in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources’ Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. In October 2009, he was named UMBC’s Alumnus of the Year in the Engineering and Information Technology category. Jim is married to Beth Clements, and they have four children – Tyler, twin daughters Hannah and Maggie, and Grace.

helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck was in the midst of securing the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed by Gov. Joe Manchin in 2008 to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Betta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2008, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, an All-American quarterback and a Heisman Trophy contender at Stanford; Mary Ellen, a sophomore volleyball player at Stanford; Emily and Addison.

uccessful at each of his previous career stops, Oliver Luck looks to continue that streak at West Virginia University. A former Mountaineer quarterback, Luck, appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics by President James P. Clements on June 9, 2010, has already made strides in just one year in enhancing WVU’s role as a player in the collegiate world.

said Luck. “I care deeply about this school. I’ve had an opportunity to serve on the Board of Governors the last couple of years, and it’s given me a tremendous viewpoint of how important intercollegiate athletics is at a land-grant institution like WVU. “WVU is truly one of the outstanding land-grant universities in the country, and I am so pleased to be a part of its momentum and growth. This is a tremendous opportunity - a chance to return to a University and a state that I love at a dynamic and strategic time in its history.” In his first year, Luck has hired four head coaches while maintaining the superior level of success WVU has recently enjoyed. In addition to new hires, Luck has overseen the progress of major capital projects, such as the WVU basketball practice facility, and fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph, in the classroom and on the field. Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. Luck’s journey to the big chair at WVU began in his native Cleveland, where in 1977 he was named the Cleveland Touchdown Club Player of the Year at St. Ignatius High. Luck chose WVU over Ivy League schools Harvard and Yale, embarking upon a career that saw him establish school records for touchdown passes and completions during his playing days, while also leading the Mountaineers to a 26-6 upset victory over Florida in the 1981 Peach Bowl. His best season came as a senior in 1981 when he completed 216 of 394 passes for 2,448 yards and 16 touchdowns. He passed for a career-high 360 yards in a 2724 loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in the final regularseason game of his career. Luck ended his college career with 5,765 yards and 43 touchdown passes, both figures still ranking among the best in school history. Luck was a two-time team MVP in 1980 and 1981, and also received the Louis D. Meisel Award for the WVU football student-athlete with the highest grade point average. The two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic AllAmerican was the recipient of Today’s Top Five, presented for scholastics by the NCAA and was selected by the National Football Foundation as one of its 10 scholar-athletes to make a keynote speech at its annual banquet in 1982. Selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Houston Oilers (44th overall pick), Luck spent four years with the Oilers from 1982-86. His most extended action came in 1983 when he started six games and finished the season completing 124-of-217 passes for 1,375 yards and eight touchdowns. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros and the Livestock Show and Rodeo. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos,

LEADER

After sitting out the majority of his rookie campaign due to a knee injury, redshirt freshman Kevin Noreen has been thrust into the leadership role as one of only four returning players from last season’s roster. Noreen is looking at what he learned last year and turning it into positives this season. Mountaineer Illustrated: Even though you played in a few games last year, how good does it feel to finally be able to start your college basketball career? Noreen: It’s great. Last year was a learning experience for me. I was able to learn coach (Bob) Huggins’s offensive and defensive schemes. Coming into this year, I get to help the new guys and my knee feels 100 percent again, so it’s good to be out there playing.

What is it like going from being a freshman to an immediate leadership role? I was thrust into this role. I’m not even a sophomore more yet, but I was here, so I have some seniority and a good grasp of what is expected in the program. I can share my experiences with them, and if I can, I will.

What was the experience of going to Europe like and has that put this team ahead of others? Guys got to learn and get a head start on the offense and defense. The team chemistry and bonding was the most important thing. Other than that, it was about being in game situations with the coaches and learning what is expected of us.

What is it about your game that you think makes you most successful? My basketball IQ is most important. It can really help you be successful from what I saw last year. My shooting is there, and coach Huggins has been telling me to shoot more.

Talk about this year’s class as compared to other West Virginia teams. This mold is about speed and getting rebounds. We have a lot of options with transition and where to be on those plays. We also have a lot of new guys, and the most important thing for them to realize is that it’s not high school and you’re not the strongest, fastest and best player anymore.

Talk about the spot-shooting technique and finding open space to get off a free shot. KJ (Kevin Jones) will come in and be double-teamed every time he gets the ball. Obviously, Deniz (Kilici) will be doubled up with that hook he has. The difference is Deniz can fight off the double-team with his hook shot, whereas KJ is a better passer and is more willing to pass it off. It’s about moving, cutting, seeing the gaps and getting out of his way. It’s just finding the open spot and getting in that gap.
