ITB Asia 2017 is back once again, this time celebrating its 10th anniversary at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, from 25 - 27 October. Busan International Film Festival BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA First hosted in 1996, the film festival grew to become the biggest of its kind in Asia. Held annually, the Busan International Film Festival introduces new films and recognises first-time directors. Serving as a hub of Asian cinema, the event appeals to a large youthful audience and keeps attendees engaged with its exciting line-up of programs. This year’s installment launches Platform Busan, which provides a conducive space for filmmakers to mingle, exchange ideas and experiences. Phuket Vegetarian Festival THAILAND Contrary to its name, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is something akin to Thaipusam, where devotees practice flesh mortification as a testament to their faith. During the nineday festival, participants pierce their bodies with all manner of objects including knives and swords and adhere to a strict lifestyle. The festival first begun in 1825, when a Chinese opera group recovered from malaria after abstaining from meat and pleasures of the flesh as an oblation to the Nine Emperor Gods. Do note that this year the festival processions will be restricted to one day only: Oct 28 - in honour and respect to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

MARKET NEWS Thrill-seekers Can Head to ‘Lord of the Rungs’ Waterfall Climb for New Highs Adventure in New Zealand is no secret; from bungy-jumping to high-speed jet boats and hiking trails up snowy mountains, this scenic country has much to offer. But there’s a new thrill for those seeking that little extra rush of adrenaline - the Lord of the Rungs. At 450 metres high, Wildfire Wanaka’s Lord of the Rungs is the world’s highest via ferrata (a term for protected climbing routes) waterfall climb. Recently opened in September 2017, New Zealand’s newest thrill is located in Wanaka and costs approximately NZ$595 per person. Climbers can expect to embark on a six to seven hour adventure that will end with a heli flight descent. If you don’t think you’re fit enough for such daredevil tasks, don’t fret. There are three climbing options available that allows climber of all fitness
levels and abilities to experience a little adventure. From the 3-hour ‘go wild’ beginner climb to the longer, ‘wild thing’ intermediate ascent and the latest more technical ‘lord of the rungs’, there’s bound to be something for everyone. “You don’t need any climbing experience and only moderate fitness for the beginner climb. If you can climb a ladder and manage the fear of heights, then you can do it. We’ve had grandmothers and children as young as nine years do that climb,” he says. “And we find that many of our beginner climbers actually ask to upgrade to the second level once they’ve completed the first,” says Mountaineer turned tourism operator and guide, Mark Morrison. https://www.newzealand.com/sg
Singapore Bike Show 2017: Ride the World in Full Throttle Asia’s most comprehensive motorcycle, scooter, bicycle and e-scooter show concluded successfully on the 20th of August. The weekend affair drew over 50,000 bike enthusiasts. The event itself was a comprehensive showcase of the latest bikes, accessories and gadgets. The festival serves as an event for enthusiasts and hobbyists to meet, greet and talk shop; it is also a key platform for motor associations, manufacturers, distributors, training schools and delivery companies in Asia to converge, network and develop business opportunities. he land of fire and ice never ceases to amaze travellers with its vast scenic vistas, dramatic landscapes dotted with volcanoes, geysers, and imposing glaciers. Iceland is home to many attractions, including the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon, Thingvellir National Park, and the Skogafoss Waterfall.

Hofdi House Built in the 1909, the Hofdi House is steeped in history and noted for its architectural beauty. The building is renowned for hosting the 1986 summit meeting of presidents Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbatsjov - a historical event that marked the end of the Cold War. Even though the house is not open to the public, visitors are allowed to explore the exterior and surrounding areas. Hallgrimskirkja Church The Lutheran parish church serves as the capital’s main landmark; its towering facade allows the structure to be seen from almost any part of the city. Besides the statue of Leifur Eiríksson (c. 970 – c. 1020) – the first European to discover America, situated directly in front of the church, visitors can also see the massive pipe organ, which stands at an impressive height of 15m and weighs a hefty 25 tons, located within the confines of the Hallgrimskirkja Church. Blue Lagoon The Blue Lagoon is a natural, mineral-rich geothermal pool is found in the middle of a large and dramatic lava field. Set against the the picturesque mountainous landscape, the teal-coloured geothermal spa is perfect for a relaxing and rejuvenating soak. The waters are harnessed from a nearby geothermal power plant - Svartsengi. The active ingredients silica, algae, and minerals, gives the waters it’s bluish hue.

Thingvellir National Park Named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004, the Thingvellir National Park is a favourite pit-stop for travellers
“Reykjavik, the country’s capital and its largest city, encapsulates the modern vibes of a city without sacrificing its distinctive historical charms” taking the Golden Circle route. Due to its unique geology, the site once served as a natural amphitheatre and was utilized for public speaking, making it the world’s first parliament. Aside from its historical significance, Thingvellir is the site of the mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Every year, the plates are pulled apart at a rate of two centimetres, thus creating the Thingvellir Rift Valley. Gullfoss Waterfall The captivating Gullfoss Waterfall or Golden Waterfall is a mighty, two-tiered waterfall that’s located in the upper part of the Hvita river. The river flows 40 km downstream to a narrow gorge at the Gullfoss Waterfall. In the winter, the waterfall freezes over and offers magnificent sights of the frozen waves of glistening ice. Geysir Hot Spring Area Another crowd favourite situated along the Golden Circle is the highly active Geysir Hot Spring. Home to boiling mud pits and erupting geysers, notably the vibrant Strokkur, it’s no surprise why this spot is a must-visit on any traveller’s itinerary. Visitors keen to learn more about the geysers in the area can also check out the Geysir Centre for more information.
n SOUTH COAST ICELAND Black Sand Beaches and Dyrholaey Located in the compact town of Vik, the famed black sand beaches are a sight not-to-be-missed! The black beaches of Iceland are formed by the basalt lava (black volcanic rock) covering much of the area. A stone

throw’s away from Vik is Dyrholaey, a small peninsula or more specifically, a rocky promontory known for its prominent and natural arch. It’s the best place to get spectacular views of the black sand beach, the black lava columns in Reynisdrangar, and the dormant volcano, Katla to the north. Skogafoss Waterfall and Seljalandsfoss Located on the Skoga River, the Skogafoss waterfall lies on the cliffs of a former coastline. The main highlight of the waterfall - after one reaches the top of the Skogafoss - is the breathtaking panoramic view of southern Iceland’s coastline. Travellers can take the man-made path leading up the hill, which is situated right next to the waterfall, to reach the top. Found along Iceland’s southern coast, the waters of the Seljalandsfoss flow from the melting water of the notable glacier-capped Eyjafjallajokull volcano. One unique feature about this waterfall is the walking path that is located behind it. Visitors can walk along the path and get behind the waterfall. t is easy to fall in love with Maui. Three Bears Falls You know that you have arrived at the Waikini Falls or “Three Bears Falls” when you see the dramatic sight of water Road to Hana cascading into three streams, spilling into a pool that is situated half a mile after mile marker 19. Hanawai Falls Pay a visit to the visually arresting Hanawai Falls, which is located after mile marker 24. A popular swimming spot for travellers and locals, the Hanawai Falls is one of the waterfall pools along the Hana Highway that flows from the cliffs to a small pool. Hana Lava Tube Simply stunning, the Hana Lava Tube is a mammoth cave formed by ancient lava flows. A must-see for those interested in caves and geology, you will encounter rare stalactites and stalagmites that almost seem to be dripping chocolate from the ceiling. While inside, take time to check out the lava tube and marvel at the amazing geological wonders on display. Nestled inside the lava tube is a Ti-Maze where ti-plants form the maze’s beautiful backdrop. Haleakala National Park Hailed as the “house of sun”, Haleakala

National Park is the perfect place to experience the world’s most spectacular sunrise. Makawao Situated on the mid-slopes of Haleakala volcano, Makawao is a charming picturesque town home to the island’s arts community. It is a town of working artists, where you can watch glassblowers, wood sculptors and painters in action. You can spend an afternoon at the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center browsing the gallery exhibits and take up a class in painting, sculpting, glassblowing – whatever floats your boat.

nce again, consumers were spoilt for choice when they attended this year’s Travel Revolution Fair (TRF). Taking place at Marina Bay Sands, TRF received consumers of all walks of life from the 4th to the 6th of August 2017. Over a hundred exhibitors, including SA Tours, Nam Ho, and Chan Brothers, took part in the fair offering a wide range of travel deals tailored to suit all kinds of budgets. Travel-related services such as airline offers, travel insurance, pocket WiFi rental, car rentals, travel accessories were also

featured apart from the various packaged deals at TRF. With travel agencies, tourism boards, cruises and airlines putting their best foot forward, it’s not surprise why the fair was met with an overwhelming response. inter in Korea is a little wonderland of sorts – from thrilling mountain adventures, unique camping experiences and landscapes embraced by soft mounds of snow, experiencing Korea while it’s chilly is a whole different experience. Temperatures drop to an average of -6°C to 3°C during the months of December through February - though it can get as cold as -10! So you’re going to have to bundle up in pretty winter wear during your visit, but take comfort in the fact that most transportation systems and indoor areas in Korea are wellequipped with heating systems at this time of the year. Gangneung is best known for being the ‘city of coffee’, so warming up with a hot cuppa, coupled with views of the coast will definitely be in order. Located on the east coast of South Korea, this coastal province has a culture distinct from other cities. Visit the Gangneung Coffee Street (Anmok Beach) – the best spot for your coffee fix. The Café Street started out with just vending machines in the 1980s. Today, you will find numerous picturesque little coffee boutiques, inviting you to simply sit and sip the afternoon away.
Jeongseon
Best known for being the birthplace of the Jeongseon Arirang – a melancholic Korean folk song – the county has iconic structures such as the Byeongbangchi Skywalk and lesser-known gems such as the Jeongseon Arirang 5–Day Market. The former offers unparalleled views 583 meters in the air (standing atop a glass floor, no less!) whilst the latter is famed for medicinal herbs, fresh local produce and authentic local vibes. If time permits, head over to the Samtan Art Mine - a cultural art space created at the site of an abandoned mine. The museum is four storeys deep, and on the second floor you can walk through the very same chambers the miners of the past used as a storage and shower area. If you’re a fan of the hit Korean drama Descendents of the Sun (2016), you may recognise it as the location was used as a filming spot!

Pyeongchang is a must-visit during the winter; the magnificent snow-capped mountains alone will take your breath away. There are also a slew of ski resorts to pick from – and many of them offer lessons for beginners conducted by experts in English; perfect for us from sunny Singapore who don’t have the luxury to cruise down hills of snow every year! Ski festivals are aplenty in this side of town, so remember to visit at least one. A few noteworthy ones include the Fun Ski Festival held at YongPyong Resort – Korea’s first key resort, which also plays host to many international competitions. Another ski activity to check out would be the Korea International Ski Camp, a three-day two-night ski package targeted at tourists. It includes accommodation, meals, ski lessons, various activities and even a little competition. The PyeongChang Trout Festival is one of a kind holiday experience you won’t forget. Located in the city of Jinbu-myeon, you can witness people sitting in chairs on the frozen lake, with a little hole carved out in the ice, simply waiting to catch some trout! Get in on the fun and purchase an all-inclusive fishing supply kit which can be purchased at the venue itself. After you catch your own dinner, you can pass it to the cooks on-site to turn it into a delicious meal. After all that skiing and fishing, take a little break and visit the scenic Daegwalleyong Sheep Farm, where visitors can take in the sights of wide grass fields blanketed in snow

Bonus: Locations to visit if you are an avid K-Drama fan
We’ve got a few recommendations for you if you’re a fan of the drama Guardian: The Lonely and Great God also known as ‘Goblin’. Set during the winter season in Korea, the cinematography, is magnificent. Jumunjin Beach is one of the filming spots. With fine sand, stunning blue waters and dark rocks, it’s easy to see why this place has just the right balance of whimsy and romance. Re-create that iconic scene from Goblin (an on-site prop rental service is available so that visitors can pose with a bouquet of buckwheat flowers and a red scarf just like the scene from the drama) and bring back some idyllic shots from your vacation! The Jumunjin Harbour has some excellent seafood restaurants to check out as well. Woljeongsa Temple is another location in the forested valley on the eastern slopes of the Odaesan Mountain. The temple is also the site of Seongbo Museum, displaying artifacts and treasures from Buddhist culture of the Goryeo Dynasty. At the first gate near the entrance of the temple (called the Iljumun Gate) you will find the Haetalgyo Bridge; a snow-covered bridge where the drama’s mythical god Dokkaebi followed the protagonist. About a kilometre away in the fir forest is also where other significant romantic films were shot!

While you’re in Korea, don’t miss out on the opportunity to take in the sights of Jeju Island – a natural World Heritage site! There is much to see on the island; the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Manjanggul Cave, bija tree forests, lava tubes, and waterfalls are just some of the many breath-taking sights this little province has to offer. On New Year’s Eve this year, a colorful Hanmadang Festival, which will include performances (such as the Ganggangsullae) will be held for tourists. One of Capri’s most notable attractions is the Blue Grotto. Used as a bath since the Roman times, the cave, due to its small entrance, is only accessible via a small rowboat. The cave is dark when one first enters it, however after travelling about 20 metres in, the sudden appearance of glowing, azure blue waters might surprise you, hence the name, Blue Grotto. The waters inside the cave are illuminated by sunlight passing through an underwater cavity and shining through seawater.

eld at the Suntec City from the 11th to 13th of August, the three-day bi-annual fair hosted over 80 exhibitors including airlines, cruise operators, hotels/resorts, National Tourism Organisations (NTOs), travel agents and other travelrelated companies - Dynasty Travel, CTC Travel, Hong Thai Travel, and many others. With popular agencies all under one roof, attendees had a plethora of packages to choose from. Additionally, the on-site staff provided them with vital information to better prepare them for their trips. Apart from offering attractive prices, there were a number of staycation deals available to make trips unforgettable. To take it up a notch, the anticipated NATAS Grand Draw was
back, and every $500 spent at NATAS Holidays 2017 gave visitors a chance to win the coveted top prize of a pair of business class tickets to any A350 destinations sponsored by Singapore Airlines Limited and walk away with S$1,000 worth of shopping vouchers sponsored by MasterCard. A 10-day trip to Prague, Vienna and Budapest for two and a pair of economy tickets to Europe were also up for grabs! NATAS organises two fairs annually to cater to the peak travel seasons in June and December. To keep things interesting, exotic destinations including Bhutan, Mongolia, and Sao Paulo have been added to attract and appeal to a broader market of travellers.
