riving around New Zealand will allow you to experience her wonders in the best way possible. There is so much to explore: glaciers, fjords, mountains, vast plains, hills, forests, volcanic plateaus … the list goes on! The many National Parks that host these gems are also open to the public - taking you on thousands of kilometres worth of trails! New Zealand’s strategic location is a key factor as to why it has given birth to so many wondrous phenomena – situated between two oceans and tectonic plates, the many extreme organic activities that happen below and above the earth’s surface often result in unusual yet stunning scenery. Take for example the icy Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier – enormous valleys of ice that transport you back in time to the Ice Ages. Remember to take the time to soak in the steaming glacial waters at the Glacier Hot Pools near Franz Josef. Located in the heart of the rainforest, it offers tranquillity, warmth and rejuvenation. Milford Sound is yet another top scenic sight to visit. Situated on the west coast of South Island, this fjord is located within Fiordland National Park. You can choose to kayak, trek, enjoy a cruise, or jump on a scenic flight through this astounding beauty. Visit black-sand beaches, the picturesque Lake Rotorua and Lake Taupo as well the enchanting Huka Falls. Without a doubt, your cameras will be kept busy throughout your New Zealand adventure. BEST FOR ATMOSPHERE - KOREA

Part of Korea’s charm and whimsy can be attributed to the four different seasons which the country enjoys. Each climate brings with it a fresh experience - it all depends on what you want to see and do during your trip!

pring falls between March and May, and brings with it the numerous cherry blossoms and various bright flowers, transforming Korea’s landscape into a muted pink paradise. Head to the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival for the best views of the cherry blossoms. This 1.7 kilometre stretch of road is lined with a multitude of cherry blossom trees, forsythia and other springtime blooms. Summer starts in June all the way till August and is the best time to enjoy tropical activities, Korea’s beaches and summer music festivals. Summer is also the best time to visit Korea’s scenic valleys. A popular spot is the Bigeum Valley, located at Sudong National Tourist Park. The cool waters here run through the lush green forests and the stream is surrounded by three different mountains. Autumn paints Korea in hues of crimson red and bright orange – the skies are clear and the summer sizzle makes way for gentle breezes. Hiking (or a simple stroll) through the different parks will allow you to take in the fall foliage in all its glory. Mt. Bukahansan and Seoraksan National Park are some great places to visit during the fall for fantastic photo opportunities. The magical season of Winter turns Korea into a wonderland from the months of December through early March. Winter festivities are aplenty during this season; ski festivals, trout-fishing, sledding and ice-skating are just a few to name! The four distinctive seasons truly make Korea a wonderful holiday destination – one visit is simply not enough.

BEST FOR LEGENDS - TURKEY

The world’s most legendary sites can be found in the impeccably beautiful Turkey.

Library of Celsus

T

he history of the Turks covers a time frame of more than 4000 years. From Ottoman to the Byzantines, this great land saw incredible success and devastating failures through the centuries. Borrowing, amalgamating and adapting various elements from the myriad of cultures that inhabited the lands through the years, the Turkey you visit today is the resulting magnum opus. It comes as no surprise then, that Turkey has been voted as the destination ‘Best for Legends’ in our Travel Journal Travel Awards. Allow us to take you through some must-see, legendary and iconic places around the ancient cities of Turkey.

Library of Celsus

Having undergone extensive restoration works, the library of Celsus, located in Ephesus, is undeniably one of the greatest ruins in Turkey. Built in 100-110 A.D by Galius Julius Aquila for his father, the governor of the province of Asia, it is now considered to be one of the most distinctive pieces of architecture that is associated with Ephesus. Capable of holding over 12,000 scrolls in niches, the ancient library was the third largest in the ancient world and was commended by architects in the modern world for its clever design and astounding beauty. A 21-meter wide marbled courtyard serves as the entrance to the library and marble steps lead the way to Corinthian-style columns which take you into the twostory gallery. It is also built to give you the illusion that it is bigger than it really is. The interior of the library was destroyed by a fire as a result of the invasion of the Goths. Its facade was

relatively untouched, but still had to be reconstructed using bits and pieces found during various excavation expeditions. The most prominent pieces of replica would be the ‘Four Virtues’, which are four statues in the niches of the columns - symbols of wisdom, knowledge, intelligence, and valor.

House of Virgin Mary

A little away from the city of Epheus and located atop the ‘’Bulbul’ mountain, the house of the Virgin Mary sits still and serene, surrounded by greenery. It is considered to be the house in which Mary spent her last days. A fine example of Roman architecture - made completely out of stone - it is a sacred Catholic and Muslim shrine visited by throngs of tourists and pilgrims today. Outside of the little stone house is an ornate fountain, which is believed to have healing powers. A solemn and sacred piece of many major religions, believers and unbelievers flock to this place for its legendary historical and religious significance. There is also a ‘wishing wall’ on site, where many leave behind prayer requests in hopes that they will be answered.

kingdom years ago. It is not known exactly when or why these statues were beheaded - but archaeologists believe that there was a collective effort at one point in time to remove the heads from the bodies. The colossal ruins evoke a combined sense of mystery, wonder, and awe - making it an absolute must-visit during your tour of Turkey! For more information, please visit http://www. turkeytourism.com.my

Mount Nemrut

Nemrut is a mountain that can be found in East Turkey. At the summit, is a museum of large headless statues. It all began in 62 B.C, when the ruler of the Commangene Kingdom (one of Greek and Aremenian influences) built for himself a tomb at the top of the mountain, surrounding it with statues of Greek and Persian gods. There were also statues of Iranian and Armenian gods - a testament to the diversity and harmony of cultures that inhabited this

BEST FOR NATURE - SARAWAK

Travel Journal readers have voted Sarawak as the best destination to head to if you have a penchant for the great outdoors!

Orangutan

B

orneo spans just over 1% of the planet’s surface, yet it is home to approximately 6% of the earth’s prime rainforests. Much of that rainforest is in the land of Sarawak, Malaysia. From the North to the South, there are thousands upon thousands of hectares of prime rainforests, all preserved in the protected areas of the state’s national parks. It is no wonder then, that this Malaysian state has been voted as the best destination to head to if you love nature!

Gunung Mulu National Park

Lambir Hills National Park

of wild Orangutans left in Sarawak. The land is officially protected by the government, and the local tribes who still inhabit the land to this day. For a taste of the local life, lodge at the Iban longhouses. The Iban tribesmen are some of the best guides you could possibly ask for; they show travellers around, bringing them to the living grounds of gibbons and hornbills, taking them to secluded waterfalls and hiking trails, and teaching them about life in Batang Ai. For a little more luxury, one could always choose the rustic Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat.

In the Northern region of Sarawak, you have Gunung Mulu National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the heart of the park is a series of cave systems unlike any other in the world; the Sarawak Chamber, for example, has set a world record for being the largest known cave chamber. Gunung Mulu National Park is a place for travellers new to the wild as well as experienced nature junkies. The latter has the option to enjoy a strenuous (but rewarding!) three-day trek to the Pinnacles, a breath-taking sight of towering razorsharp stone formations. For the less adventurous, check out the Mulu Canopy Skywalk - a 480m walkway suspended 20m over the forest floor and its lush treetops. It may not be as taxing as a hike to the Pinnacles, but it allows you to enjoy nature in all its glory.

Bako National Park

Batang Ai National Park

A Quick Escape

Moving to the South side of Sarawak, is Batang Ai National Park. Spanning over 14km, Batang Ai is exceptional for three main reasons. First off, the majority of the area is occupied by an artificial lake created by the Batang Ai hydroelectric reservoir. It is also home to one of the largest numbers

the rainforest, dive in the coral reefs, go cave diving and walk under some of the oldest trees in the world (or over them if you prefer canopy walks!). So plan for a trip down to Sarawak this 2017 and enjoy nature as it is - untouched, whole and beautiful. For more information, please visit https:// sarawaktourism.com/

Located on the northern tip of Kuching city, is Bako National Park. The forested areas are veined with small foot trails for hiking through buttressed-rooted trees and endemic liana vines. The endangered proboscis monkey also calls this place home, finding refuge from poachers in the peninsula’s forests and sustenance from its mangroves. The more time spent in the park, the greater your chances of sighting its more ‘hidden’ treasures, such as otters, porcupines, pangolins, mongooses, mouse deer and civet cats, all scurrying about the forest floor. In terms of rock formations, erosion from the wind, rain, and sea have led to exceptional displays like the Sea Stack, which has become the face of Bako National Park.

Nature enthusiasts such as bird watchers, botanists and biologists describe the national parks in Sarawak as an untouched habitat, the best remedy for life in the city. You can walk amongst orangutans and proboscis monkeys, watch a crocodile weave through the waters, kayak through

BEST FOR ADVENTURE - INDIA Thrill seekers have voted India as the best destination for adventure!

I

ndia has been a destination of adventure sports for decades and fast becoming a hub for adventure enthusiasts around the world. Travelling around India is both adventurous and a tonne of fun. India’s astounding beauty, stunning geographical location, rugged terrains, mountain cliffs and the presence of some of the magnificent adventure sports locations allows for all sorts of outdoor adventure activities. Here’s a list of some of the best adventure sports in India!

summer, you will stand amidst lush green scenery coupled with panoramic views of deep valleys and high mountains. Whereas autumn is best for witnessing the many fairs and festivals. Winter provides one with a myriad of opportunities for different kinds of snow activities, while spring breathes life back into the mountains after the long winter spell.

Heli-Skiing:

Trekking and Mountaineering

India is home to many alpine valleys and some formidable mountain cliffs. Hiking along these natural environs and conquering these peaks has become a popular adventure sport in India. The Himalayan ranges offer some of the most strenuous and challenging treks in India while the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Aravalis, Nilgiris and Western Ghats are ideal for those with intermediate trekking skills. The thrilling Zanskar river trek is one of the toughest treks in the world - the temperature in this region falls abruptly and most of the regions remain frozen, making trekking that much more difficult in this region. Despite all this, it remains as one of the highly visited trekking destinations in the world.

Himalayas on Wheels

Exploring the Himalayas on wheels is a new way to experience the vast beauty of the Himalayas without the stresses that come with exploring a great mountain range. With five seasons for travellers to experience, timing is of utmost importance to enjoy the season you love best. In the

Beautiful and exotic Kashmir and Manali are the best destinations for heli-skiing. Heli-skiing is a wonderful way to explore locations that are very tough to reach. A helicopter drops skiers to skiing spots, and from there, skiers have to find their own way down through the steep slopes of snow covered mountains. Rohtang Pass, Chanderkhani Pass, Hanuman Tibba, and Deo Tibba are some popular spots for this extreme sports adventure in India.

Paragliding:

Paragliding is one of the top adventure activities in India. The thirst for clear blue skies, and desire for unbeatable views from the cliffs can only be quenched by paragliding. India offers innumerable destinations for an enchanting paragliding adventure. The hayfields of Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh; the dream-like and magical atmosphere of Manali; the striking greens of the Kumaon region in Uttaranchal; the serene bliss of Nandi Hills in Bangalore, and the splendid beauty of Pavana Lake in Kamshet can only be experienced through paragliding.

Camel Safaris:

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the desert is to join a Camel Safari. These tours (options include half and full day tours, overnight tours with tent accommodation, etc.) offer enthralling opportunities to explore the sand dunes of Rajasthan. The village of Pushkar and the region of Ladakh are both extremely popular spots for Camel Safaris. The months from July through September are the best times to enjoy these safaris. BEST FOR SHOPPING - THAILAND

With new night markets popping up all around Bangkok, it is no wonder that this bustling city bagged the title ‘Best for Shopping’!

F

rom high-end shopping malls to humble floating markets, Thailand will leave you spoilt for choice. When it comes to getting the latest trends at affordable prices in bulk, Bangkok is the place to be. This is one major reason why many Singaporeans love Bangkok, and continue to return to this shopper’s paradise no matter how many times they have visited before. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is a familiar and fantastic shopping spot for many visiting Bangkok for the first time, but if you’re looking for new markets to check out, we’ve rounded up a list of three hot new scenes offering more than just good bargains for you to head to!

Ratchada Train Market (Talad Rot Fai Ratchada)

Open from 6pm till midnight from Thursday to Sunday, Talad Rot Fai is conveniently located near the Thailand Cultural Centre MRT Station. A popular enclave amongst the locals, it is said to be cheaper than its more touristy counterpart, Chatuchak. Bring along your bargaining prowess to bag some great deals. Ratchada Train Market offers more than just rows of the trendiest clothes and shoes - you will be able to rest those tired feet and sate your appetite at plenty of the food options available. Stumble into colourful tents which turn into street food stalls, chill at any one of the bars lining the back alley, or stop by one of the food trucks serving up mouth-watering dishes.

Artbox Bangkok

Artbox is a mobile pop-up container market - which provides vendors with the flexibility to move around the city. Housed in giant metal shipping containers, you will find that the goods available here are a little different from other night markets. Instead of the usual tourist-centric souvenirs, you will find locally designed apparel, vintage fashion and distinctive home wares. There is also a stage area for live band performances. Food lovers (and those who love taking pictures of their meals) will love the wide selection of treats available at Artbox; ombré coloured drinks, bucket sodas, and Korean street food are just a few to name. This trendy and chic market is unlike the traditional night markets and its appeal factor lies in its ability to stand out from the rest. It is a great place to shop, chill and dine at. The market shifts every few months, so be sure to check their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Artboxthailand) to find out where they will be setting up next.

Talad Neon

This new market is touted to be the bigger version of Artbox Bangkok. Organised in a similar fashion, this brand-new night market started operations in December 2016. With over 900 shops, Talad Neon is the biggest night market in Bangkok. The market is located next to Paladium Mall and situated right in between Chidlom Station (BTS) and Makkasan Station (Airport Link). This hip market offers hours of excitement and Thai as well as international delicacies that will keep you coming back for more.

10D Arctic Sweden Norway includes Arctic Circle Train

Mr Wong Yew Hoong Director

Before 2012, a holiday to catch the magical Northern Lights or a tour of the arctic would set you back thousands of dollars. EU Holidays however, stepped into the scene and were one of the first few gamechangers in the travel industry to create affordable and quality tours to the icy regions of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Svalbard islands. EU Holidays managed to bring down the costs of these once-exorbitantly priced holidays, which resulted in heightened interest and increased demand from leisure travellers in Singapore. The tour company made once-in-a-lifetime experiences available to the mass market. Such experiences include the whimsical glass igloo stay - where customers get to marvel at the beauty of the aurora borealis from the comforts of their bed! In 2016 alone, EU Holidays have managed to organise about 100 arctic tours. The travel company also has support from the Rovaniemi tourism board as their preferred travel agent in Singapore. During these special arctic tours, the EU Holidays’ tour packages also includes the services of professional photographers who help to snap fantastic shots of travellers. Director of EU Holidays, Mr. Wong, hopes to deliver even more exciting travel services in 2017 to Singaporeans. For more information, please visit: http://www.euholidays.com.sg/

Best for Adventure Tours: Incredible Odyssey

Experienced in specialising in adventure tours around India since 1989, the director of Incredible Odyssey, Mr. Irvinder Singh, ventured into the Singapore leisure travel market in 2001. From trekking expeditions to paragliding adventures, Incredible Odyssey is the only tour operator you should turn to for the best guided tour experience to the Himalayan region, or to unexplored parts of Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Mr. Irvinder Singh noted that Singaporeans were a different market of travellers. “Singaporeans want to experience adventure travels, but most them are not willing to rough it out. So, we must cater to this different type of audience and provide what I call ‘soft adventure’ tours,”. The soft adventure tours include luxuries that most Singaporeans do not wish to compromise on whilst on their dream holiday; hot showers, comfortable accommodation and a range of cuisines. Incredible Odyssey places great value in the experiences that their customers have during their holidays, which is why it is of utmost importance that all Incredible Odyssey tours come with a local guide. “It is only through the eyes of a local that you can truly experience a place,” says Mr. Singh. TREASURES OF THE BALKANS Discover the hidden gems in Southeast Europe

B

e captivated by the country’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. From its gorgeous architecture to its priceless artefacts, it’s no wonder why travelling to the Balkans has made it to the bucket-list of many.

România

Bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine, Romania is surrounded by the lush Carpathian Mountains. The Southeastern European country is also known for its medieval towns and ancient castles including the famed clifftop Bran Castle. Also known as Dracula’s Castle, the Bran Castle is a national monument and a prominent landmark in Romania. In addition, the castle has been serving as a military fortress for ages. Located near Brasov in central Romania, it became the home to the notorious, fictional character, Dracula, as depicted by the author, Bram Stoker. He based the fictional character on the historical figure Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler, who was perhaps much more frightening than his fictional counterpart. The towering fortress is a key attraction to millions of tourists every year, most of whom are keen to uncover the truth behind the myth.

“As the capital of Romania, Bucharest is known for its vibrant city life and places of interest including the Palace of Parliament, the world’s second largest administrative building.”

Bulgaria

Located in Southeast Europe, on the crossroad between Europe, Asia and Africa, Bulgaria is known for its unique cultures and traditions dating back to over thousands of years. The blend of these various cultures stemmed from the people that once occupied the lands - Thracians, Romans, Slavs, and Bulgarians. Many remnants of Bulgaria still stand to this day, encompassing the rich history of this Balkan nation. Recognised as one of Bulgaria’s most iconic historical monument, the Tsarevets Fortress used to be the former seat of the ancient Tsars. Comprising of more than 400 houses, 18 churches, the royal palace and many other additions, the prominent landmark dominates the skyline of Veliko Târnovo. The site is best visited during the Sound and Light Show, a 40-minute audiovisual display. While exploring the medieval riches of Bulgaria, one cannot miss Sofia,

As the capital of Romania, Bucharest is known for its vibrant city life and places of interest including the Palace of Parliament, the world’s second largest administrative building. Built on Nicolae Ceauşescu’s - the notorious former dictator - request, the Palace of Parliament comprises of more than 3000 rooms and covers 330,000 sq metres. Although construction of the structure began in 1984, the building has still not been completed. Another prominent attraction in this bustling capital is the Victory Palace, which is located in Victory Square, in central Bucharest. The imposing building is the headquarters of the Romanian Government. Travellers can also explore Piața Unirii or better known as Unification Square. As one of the more popular and bigger squares in central Bucharest, the square has become a starting point for many tourists keen on discovering the exciting sights of the capital.

Sofia is also relatively close by to most Balkan capitals - Ankara, Athens, Skopje, and Tirana. The city’s places of worship encapsulate the diverse architectural styles of its cathedrals, churches the synagogue and - from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the Banya Bashi Mosque.

Skopje

The capital of Macedonia offers a genuine historic tour of the ancient civilisation. Standing tall in the heart of the city, travellers will find the bronze sculpture of Alexander the Great. House of Mother Teresa is one of the most unique churches that visitors will see today. What lies inside on the first floor is a museum displaying memorabilia of the well-loved Mother Teresa. At the highest point of the city, overlooking the Vardar River is the Fortress Kale. Built in 6th century A.D, it was constructed with yellow limestone and travertine. The massive walls of the fortress were built all around the old city and well protected by gates. What’s left of it today are the ruins from the earthquake and battle wars in the region from the 11th century. In between the Fortress Kale and an old Bazaar, lies the Church of Saint Salvation, or in Macedonian language “Sveti Spas”. It was of great importance to the people of Macedonia as it houses a stone sarcophagus, which contains relic of the greatest Macedonia Hero, Geco Delvec. He fought

for freedom and independence from the Ottoman rule. Another place of interest that one must not miss is the extraordinary altar which was built in the period from 1819 to 1824 by the world famous Macedonian woodcarvers. Walk further and spot the Mustafa Pasha Mosque, towering above the old bazaar. Its distinctive arches and domes charms many visitors.

Ohrid

This small resort city displays an array of beautiful churches cascading down a graceful hill. As a popular tourist destination, Ohrid is known for its traditional restaurants and cafes by the lake. Travellers can also visit the historic monuments that lie right on the edge of Lake Ohrid. In the day, many bathers, drinkers and diners occupy the town beach nearby. The gorgeous translucent water is definitely inviting and not to be missed while there. Visitors can also hop on the Ohrid Boat Ride to discover more stunning sceneries in Ohrid. Cathedral of St. Sophia, named after the Greek word “sofia” which means “wisdom”, is a must visit for most travellers. The cathedral is famous for its mosaics and frescos by Byzantine masters dating back to the 11th century. The interior is lavishly decorated with a six-metre high mosaic depicting the praying Virgin Maria, which is made from stone and glass plates of different colours and hues.

Albania

Albania is known to many as a country filled with people practicing different cultures, traditions and religions Muslims, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholicism. The small Balkan country charms travellers with its expansive mountain range, Ottoman architecture, pristine beaches and hospitable Albanian locals. The capital city of Albania is Tirana, a colourful, bustling metropolis that encompasses the past and future of Albania. The mixed histories of communism, Ottoman and Italian influences coupled with the captivating buildings and museums attract travellers from all over the world. At the heart of the capital in Skanderbeg Square, visitors will be greeted by the imposing Skanderbeg Statue, a 15th-century statue of a glorified national hero. George Kastrioti Skanderbeg is seen riding on this horse which commemorates his bravery against the Ottoman Empire. Right around the square is the Et’hem Bey Mosque. The most fascinating feature of this structure is the 35 -meter tall wall tower with spiral staircase to the top. The tower is considered the tallest building in Albania’s capital. The beautiful ornate interior has painted carvings and frescoes depicting trees, bridges and waterfalls. For more information on tour packages, please visit www.euholidays.com.sg

As a vibrant enclave encompassing Singapore’s heritage and culture, Chinatown offers visitors an insight into Singapore’s distinctive past. Take a gander down the narrow, cramped streets and dingy alleyways, filled with family-run goldsmiths, medicinal halls and eateries next to sleeker neighbours such as hipster bars and lifestyle shops. Reacquaint yourself with places of worship and discover the unique practices tied to each religion. The area becomes a real show stopper between the 7th and 25th of January, when the streets of Chinatown are lit-up with various lanterns, large-scale props and other displays reflecting traditional Chinese values.

UNPLUG AND UNWIND AT BINTAN LAGOON RESORT Your tropical beach paradise is a mere hour away from home! WORDS BY: SARAH SATHYAMOORTHI

Fr $560 All-Inclusive Family Package

S

Recommended Package!

ailing off from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, Mozaic Ferry Line - Bintan Lagoon Resort’s (BLR) exclusive ferry service - carries me through the choppy waters directly to the resort’s private ferry terminal in Bintan, Indonesia. After disembarking, I cleared immigration in less than 10 minutes (though I suspect this pleasantry could be attributed to the non-peak season). Boarding a BLR minibus to the lobby of the resort, I realised that my little island getaway had already begun. When the word ‘beach holiday’ pops into mind, many of us have this cookie-cutter idea of what an ideal tropical fiesta should look like; images of serene beaches meeting the soft aqua hues of the sea; luxurious villas with panoramic views of the sunset, massages by the beach and palm trees swaying in the light breeze. More often than

not, pictures of the perfect island life are a far cry from the real deal. So imagine the wonder that grips me as I stroll the stretch of Pasir Panjang beach, witnessing the quintessential beach lifestyle unfold before me: a group of boys playing beach volleyball, heels kicking back the white sand as they ran; a multi-generational family taking pictures as their youngest member squeals when her toes touch the cerulean sea; a group of friends snapping selfies of themselves enjoying a drink at the Nelayan, a sleek restaurant and bar that faces the beach. I pass by two massage huts facing the beach, both with masseurs ready to untangle knots. Walking through the picturesque, wellmanicured lawn (a great place for an afternoon picnic!), I climb up a short flight of stairs to the resort’s viewpoint which reveal stunning views of the beachfront.

An Adventure in Itself

Take your pick from the 395 spacious deluxe rooms, 18 suites, and 57 villas available. Most of the villas at the resort come with a private pool and barbeque facilities, and are perfect for families or holding private parties. Look no further than to the Leisure Centre for a myriad of over 50 activities, including complimentary access to the Powerhouse Gym and Kid’s Jungle Gym, which will keep both the young and old entertained. You can channel your inner Robin Hood with archery, traverse around the island on allterrain vehicles (ATV) tours, or try your hand at novel activities such as air rifle for an adrenaline-filled afternoon. Get your swimsuit out and hit the seas on a jet ski, canoe, or kayak. The resort also prides itself on being the place to be for golf aficionados, who can tee off at one of two stunning designer golf courses: the Jack Nicklaus Sea View Golf course and the Ian Baker-Finch Woodlands Golf course. Come evening, you have the option to dance the night away at Silk Nightclub or enjoy throwing back a few shots at The Terrace bar. No resort vacation is complete without a dip in the pool. Bintan Lagoon Resort has two pools for you to choose from, one of which comes with a bar that you can swim up to for a glass of chilled beer, a variety of cocktails, and fried bites. I chilled at Ripples by the Pool (one of BLR’s 14 diverse dining options) with a glass of Strawberry Margherita surrounded by the greenery of the great outdoors and sound of the waves caressing the shore. At the end of my (terribly short) three-day retreat, the convenience, ease, and exceptional level of service that I’d experienced at Bintan Lagoon Resort left me redefining my concept of an ‘island getaway’. Singaporeans need not spend hours flying away to far and exotic islands for a quick remedy to escape the concrete jungle when the perfect escape is a mere hour away.
