To avoid costly mastitis cases and save money, look for sires with the Mastitis ResistantPRO designation. This one-of-a-kind genetic tool leverages genomic evaluations for CDCB Mastitis Resistance, CDCB Somatic Cell Score (SCS) and Zoetis Mastitis Resistance to deliver genetic improvement.

A case of clinical mastitis in the first 30 days of lactation can result in an economic loss of $444 ($128 in direct costs and $316 in indirect costs), including loss of future milk production, premature culling and replacement loss, and future reproductive loss1.

Mastitis ResistantPRO®

Sires that excel in multiple indicators of mastitis resistance are more likely to deliver genetic improvement. Mastitis

ResistantPRO uses a combination of CDCB Mastitis Resistance, CDCB Somatic Cell Score (SCS) and Zoetis Mastitis Resistance genomic evaluations.

Matt McKenzie, and father Eoin, were two of the 25 delegates who travelled on the 2024 WWS NZ USA Farm Tour, Matt recalling that “Eoin has dabbled with WWS genetics for as far back as 2010.

In the last few years we have used increasing amounts as we noticed a shift towards higher component and smaller stature sires being available and, at the same time, we made changes to our system.

When the 2024 WWS catalogue came out we expressed interest in the US Farm Tour to John Bannatyne (our WWS Breeding Consultant). Long story short, we got on that plane – and what a 10 days or so we had!

Visiting Select Sires, and some of the studs who had bred bulls we’d used previously or were planning to use that coming spring was awesome.

The focus and emphasis Select Sires/WWS is putting into improving genetics for grazing systems was actually quite eye opening - moderating cow size and increasing efficiency the common theme across almost all of the farms we toured.

We’ve always found WWS to be client focused with a passionate and accountable approach, especially John. Visiting Select Sires and spending time with some of their management team and staff reinforced that that approach to business runs right through the organisation.

The tour was fantastic, well organised and just generally so insightful. I’d recommend anyone even remotely interested to go for a look!”

Bryce and Amy Eastwick are milking their first crop of WWS 2 year olds this spring and Bryce says they’ve “exceeded expectations in the most trying spring I’ve had in my farming career.

Considering the spring we’ve had, they’ve been incredibly resilient, easy in the shed and producing well – all while cycling and conceiving better than we expected given how hard things have been.

For the first time in my 16 odd years farming I’m excited about our heifers. Irene (our WWS Breeding Consultant) and I did a comparison of the sires we used in 2021 compared to what we used in 2024 which showed significant improvement. Based on this, and given how quickly WWS genetics continue to improve, it’s difficult to even begin to guess what are our heifers will be like in 2027!

To say we’re very happy is an understatement. Irene is a great consultant and we get fantastic service from the WWS team.”

“We’ve partnered with WWS now for coming up 10 years. At the time we made multiple changes to our business as we felt we had stagnated in a few areas. Fast track forward to today, WWS continues to change and adapt with us.

Our two dairy platforms have now been using the WMS programme for the last 6 years. In that time, we’ve become increasingly selective in regards to grouping cows to breed replacements from. Following the investment in collars and consistently achieving industry targets for 3 week submission rate and 6 week in-calf rates, we’ve introduced Sexed Semen into our mating plan.”

Our groupings are selected by on-farm performance, visual and just generally whether she’s more likely to end up on the cull list for indices or SCC. Cows who’d had health issues or other drawbacks in previous seasons go straight into the terminal list. By our choice, we’re also not afraid to breed our top older cows to dairy semen as they’ve proven themselves in our system. This is reflective in the BW and PW averages by group below – particularly the conventional group as it contains more of these bomb proof old cows.

The Frew family have been using WWS over their 780 cow herd for a number of years, Jono Frew saying that, in farming generally, “we’ve been both early and late adapters to change and innovate. In our district, we were probably one of the early adopters of WWS GrazingPro genetics, and now are just one of many.

Our crop of 2 year olds this last spring won the Southland & Otago Heifer Competition as rising two year olds. Obviously management, rearing and luck play their part in these sorts of things, but the consistency of the WWS progeny was noticeable.

As we continue to understand and put more focus on genetics in our business we continue to utilise the tools WWS has available – ranking and segmenting the herd, WMS mating plans and Techmix products which are all great additions over recent years.

We’ve found YMCP Vitall to be a great product. Being able to offer a cow what she needs post calving in one easy bolus application makes sense. The yeast component promotes appetite and we just don’t see cows take a backwards step when entering the herd. We started with Vitall, and now use every product in the range –it all works!”

FROM WORLD WIDE SIRES

SELECT THE BEST IN HIGH PERFORMING GRAZING GENETICS

GrazingPRO SIRES ARE SELECTED TO IMPROVE THE PROFITABILITY OF GRASS-BASED PRODUCTION SYSTEMS BY TRANSMITTING OUTSTANDING DAUGHTER FERTILITY, LONGEVITY, MOBILITY, MODERATE STATURE AND HIGH COMPONENT YIELDS.

Avoid costly mastitis cases and save money

A case of clinical mastitis in the first 30 days of lactation can result in an economic loss of $444 ($128 in direct costs and $316 in indirect costs), including loss of future milk production, premature culling and replacement loss, and future reproductive loss1

Reduce waste milk and keep valuable replacements in the herd

Mastitis is a leading reason for culling, especially in cows beyond the first lactation. The most common clinical diseases in cows reported by producers is mastitis (24.8 percent of cows)2. Fewer mastitis cases means less discarded milk and reduced treatment cost in all management systems.

Healthy cows produce more

Mastitis ResistantPRO designates sires which excel in multiple indicators of mastitis resistance and are more likely to deliver genetic improvement. Mastitis ResistantPRO uses a combination of CDCB Mastitis Resistance, CDCB Somatic Cell Score (SCS) and Zoetis Mastitis Resistance.

Lower antimicrobial use

Over twenty percent of all lactating dairy cows receive antibiotic therapy for clinical mastitis each year and many cows receive intramammary infusions as they go dry2. Improving genetic merit for mastitis resistance will reduce use of antimicrobials.

A genetic solution to mastitis resistance

Sires that excel in multiple indicators of mastitis resistance are more likely to deliver genetic improvement. Mastitis ResistantPRO uses a combination of CDCB Mastitis Resistance, CDCB Somatic Cell Score (SCS) and Zoetis Mastitis Resistance genomic evaluations.

The journey from being tentative and cautious of overseas genetics to understanding and positive about using them has been a conservative and considered transition for Aaron and Jerushah Courage.

“It’s a journey we’re pleased we made,” Aaron says.

“Like everything in farming, Jerushah and I learn and grow every year and genetics has been no exception. We started off cautiously, buying eight doses of CASINO and maybe four in sexed, literally 12 doses.

Our passion for cows centres around Jerseys and in the last few years we’ve put increasing emphasis on the Zoetis Wellness Traits published by WWS, particularly .

Jersey calves when they are up and going are a pleasure to rear, but if they get checked, recovery can be slow and cumbersome. We’ve found the Zoetis Calf Wellness Traits particularly accurate and are now consciously selecting sires with higher wellness traits.

On the topic of calves, we’ve found that Calf Rennova from Techmix does exactly as advertised. Initially we got a tub based on a Calving Pack promotion WWS was running, not realising it was included when the order was delivered. Let’s just say it’s now a calf shed essential for us!”

HELP THEM REACH THEIR POTENTIAL.

DOES YOUR NEXT GROUP OF GRADUATES HAVE THE GENETICS THEY NEED TO THRIVE?

Health is the foundation for calves to achieve their genetic potential and graduate to the milking herd. Research shows that U.S. dairies experience calf loss at a rate of 4-30%.

In a world with limited replacements, boost completion rates and create robust heifers by incorporating traits into your selection criteria.

The Bayly farm at Pembroke in the Taranaki annually gets around 2500-3000ml of rain and this, added to the fact the property is 450m above sea level “brings some challenges” according to Pete Bayly. “And those challenges quickly highlight when something works or when it doesn’t.

Over the years we’ve tried a number of companies, with varied results. World Wide Sires’ approach to sales and service, coupled with a product which matches our expectations has been a notable difference. Every breeding company will give you some good cows but I believe you get a line of great cows with WWS.

WWS and I agree that cows which are structurally correct will last the distance and be profitable cows in our system. We’ve seen that structure and shape continue to improve, and this perception is regularly reinforced by unsolicited feedback from stock agents, industry professionals and farming peers. We have no issues selling lines of surplus stock as a result.

For a no pressure and honest approach to service, supporting genetics which work, talk to Jeff Short and the WWS team.”

4.1 WWS warrants that it has good title to the products sold.

4.2 Although customers have gained a high degree of success in the use of products supplied by WWS, and every effort is made to ensure the supply of high quality products, WWS, its agents and contractors give no warranty whatsoever as to the description, quality or productiveness or the results which may be obtained in the use of WWS products. Any such warranty given by any of WWS’s agents or employees is hereby excluded on the basis that such a warranty would have been given without the authority of WWS.

5.2 If the offspring bred using semen supplied by WWS semen is male and of interest for artificial breeding purposes (or may be likely to be), then the customer will offer WWS an exclusive right to purchase that offspring, at a fair and reasonable market price. If a fair and reasonable market value cannot be negotiated between WWS and the customer, then WWS will be under no obligation to purchase the male offspring. In the event that WWS elects not to purchase the male offspring, the male offspring may be sold, provided that the customer ensures that it is always a written condition of sale that the male offspring may only be used during male’s entire lifetime as a service bull for natural mating only (i.e. not for the collection of semen nor artificial breeding/artificial insemination), unless WWS first provides its written consent.

5.3 The customer will ensure that any third party purchasing female offspring bred using “NxGen” designated semen supplied by WWS is informed of, and agrees in writing to comply with all terms of WWS’s “NxGEN Agreement”.

5.4 The customer will at all times keep accurate records of semen use that is supplied by WWS and with offspring bred using such semen. The customer will not sell or dispose of any cow (pregnant or otherwise) that is derived from “NxGen” designated semen to any purchaser who is not a member of WWS’s “NxGen” program, unless WWS’s prior written consent is first obtained.

5.5 If the customer breaches any part of this clause 5, the parties will have 90 days to resolve any and all breaches of contract. GPRO$ Grazing Pro Dollars: provides lifetime profitability of grass-based production systems by transmitting outstanding daughter fertility, greater longevity, mobility, moderate stature, improved component percentages and yields.

HHP$® Herd Health Profit Dollars: is the most comprehensive and measurable economic index in the industry. Created for farmers, by farmers, HHP$ prioritizes the traits that make the greatest impact. Boost mastitis resistance, lower incidence of other health challenges and breed long-lasting, healthy cows that improve cashflow.

BPI Balanced Performance Index: an Australian economic index that drives improvements in the traits that affect lifetime contribution to the farm business: production, type, health, fertility, longevity, workability, feed efficiency and type.

TPI® Total Performance Index: This is a formula that combines type, management and production traits into one number. Holstein Association’s TPI places more emphasis on type traits than the Net Merit formula, comparable emphasis on Fat and Protein production, and slightly lower emphasis on health traits.

DWP$ Dairy Wellness Profit Index: A multi-trait selection index that includes production, fertility, type, longevity, and the wellness traits with unique formulas used for Holsteins and Jerseys.

Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) Milk, Fat & Protein: Predicts the average production of the sire’s future daughters above or below the breed genetic base for Milk lbs, Fat lbs & Protein lbs per lactation.

PL Productive Life: A score used to identify the productive months of life a cow will have compared to herd mates. A PL of 1.0 equates to one additional month of production in the herd. PL gives the greatest weight to the first 305 days (10 months) of lactation, as cows are most profitable and productive in early lactation.

DPR Daughter Pregnancy Rate: Measures the cow’s ability to begin cycling, show estrus, conceive, and maintain pregnancy. A DPR of 1.0 equates to a 1% increase in pregnancy rate during a given 21 day estrus cycle. Every 1.0 PTA increase in DPR indicates 4 fewer days open.

SCS Somatic Cell Count: Indicates genetic susceptibility for udder health, as revealed through somatic cell count. The USA herd average is set to 3.00 (as zero) with lower proof values indicating lower somatic cell count.

MAST PTA Mastitis: Expected resistance of an animal’s offspring to clinical mastitis compared to the breed average base, expressed in percentage points.

SCE Sire Calving Ease: This is the estimate of the Percentage of Difficult Births in Heifers (DBH) when they calve the first time. The average for the Holstein breed is 2.2%.

SGL Gestation Length: Expressed as the number of days greater than or less than the average gestation length for the breed. The typical range is +/-5 days. In general, gestation length has decreased over time for breeds that have selected for lower calving ease (i.e. Holstein), as calving ease and gestation length are highly correlated. Gestation Length is available for all dairy breeds. US is 5 days shorter than NZ average (277 US, 282 days NZ).

BCS Body Conditon Score: Canadian Breeding Value that expresses the expected body condition score for a bull’s daughters when compared to the average body condition for the population. 100 is standardized to the average of the population and breed, with numbers above 100 indicating higher than average body condition.

MS Milking Speed: Canadian Breeding Value that expresses the expected milking speed for a bull’s daughters when compared to the average milking speed for the population. 100 is standardized to the average of the population and breed, with numbers above 100 indicating faster than average milking speeds.

SCR Sire Conception Rate: This is not a genetic trait, but measures the fertility of the bull. An SCR of 1.0 indicates a 1% increase in conception rate when compared to average.

PTAT PTA Type or conformation improvement expected from a bull’s daughters compared to contemporaries.

UDC Udder Composite Index (Holstein) = Udder Depth 0.20, Fore Udder 0.16, Rear Udder Height 0.23, Rear Udder Width 0.19, Udder Cleft 0.08, Front Teat Placement 0.04, Rear Teat Placement 0.05, Teat Length 0.05, Stature -0.20.
