Your Profit – Our Passion This Kiwi Selections catalogue is additional to our main catalogue and includes bulls which excel in semen fertility, daughter fertility and profitability for the Kiwi farmer. Fertility is an objective for any farmer who wishes to increase profitability and we are putting more focus on fertility than ever before. When choosing our sires, we place more emphasis on those bulls with reliable high fertility (SCR) and who’s daughters record higher pregnancy rates (DPR). When selecting a sire from World Wide Sires you can have the confidence that years of fertility research and experience are going into every straw of semen with your success and profit in mind. World Wide Sires has a deep product base and we offer semen from New Zealand, North America, Europe and Australia. 72% of all genes of the Holstein breed’s important sires have been influenced by World Wide Sires. World Wide Sires is committed to doing our part to provide the most profitable genetics to improve your herds fertility, production and longevity and we stand by our mantra – “Your Profit – Our Passion.”

grazing specialists – Perception versus reality Health and fertility traits were found to be consistent across all management systems.

Some people believe that if genetics are not developed under a pasture-based management system they will not work in grazing herds. The US Department of Agriculture compared the performance of U.S. genetics and New Zealand genetics in grazing herds within the U.S. They tracked the performance of 552 daughters of New Zealand bulls and compared their performance to daughters of U.S. sires in those same herds. The results of their research showed that daughters of U.S. sires had higher milk yield, greater protein yield, lower Somatic Cell Scores and overall better udders. New Zealand-sired daughters were smaller and on average had fewer days open.

World Wide Sires worked with Select Sires and their partnership with the Purdue research team to properly adjust the PTA values for the current WWS grazing bull index. The comparison of the different bulls available to grazing producers in the table below shows that the traditional grazing bulls sire higher component percentages and transmit smaller body size, but World Wide Sires bulls offer moderate stature, higher milk and solids yield, longer productive life, transmit much better udders and feet and legs, and have significantly higher NM$, which equates to higher profitability. These findings are quite consistent with the USDA study.

After performing a study comparing observed daughter performance in grazing herds to PTA values across a variety of herd management levels, Purdue University was able to conclude that in order to better reflect the observed daughter production differences of grazing herds, the PTA values must be scaled back. This is a result of low-input grazing herds not capturing the full genetic potential of the cow, even though the genetic correlation remained high. This is likely due to the production level and management style, not because different genes are involved. As a result, it is possible to use daughter information from non-grazing herds to provide a comparison to grazing bulls, provided an adjustment is made to production PTAs.

Specifically sorting bulls for the traits of interest to grazing producers shows World Wide Sires grazing bulls competitively deliver top grazing genetics! If you would like to read the complete research studies done by USDA, Purdue University and University of WisconsinMadison, log on to the Journal of Dairy Science website at www. journalofdairyscience.org. Portions of this article are reprinted from Select Sires “Grazing Specialists” Spring 2013.
