FERTILE WWS DAUGHTERS IN SOUTH AFRICA Cotswold Farm of Worrall Farming in Natal Midlands, South Africa has used WWS genetics for 20 years. Matt Worrall, owner and operator of Worrall Farming, has found success in the 365 day, no TMR, pasture system by genetically selecting for positive fat and protein percentages, high PL and DPR, low SCS and Calving Ease, negative stature, positive BCS, good udders and feet and legs. The data in the table below represents cows in the herd that have completed at least one lactation and are sired by 14 different bulls. When grouping the herd into three groups based on the Fertility Index (FI) of the cows’ sires, the average Calving Interval clearly shows the benefit of using bulls with higher daughter fertility. On average, the calving interval for daughters of bulls in the top group for Fertility Index was 14 days shorter than the calving interval for daughters of bulls with the lowest daughter fertility. “A bull does not need to be 1,500 lbs of milk with two points for type and udders to excel in the seasonal calving system. He does need to have high PL and DPR with low SCS, SCE and DCE. Our end product is not a flashy, high producing first calver; it is a profitable six-year-old cow that has calved five times. We strive to breed the invisible cow.” – Paul Meade; WWS Breeding Advisor, Natal, South Africa

O MAN’S IMPACT IN IRELAND O MAN’s legacy as an influential fitness sire lives on in Ireland. 20 years after he was born, O-Bee Manfred Justice-ET is still making a tremendous impact in Irish dairy herds. O MAN has had over 3000 daughters milking in Ireland. He is proof that excellent production can be achieved alongside excellent fertility.

O MAN has had over 3000 daughters milking in Ireland, averaging 7936 kg at 3.96% fat and 3.43% protein. This is made all the more impressive when you consider his Calving Interval in Ireland is 5 days shorter than average. He is proof that excellent production can be achieved alongside excellent fertility. In 2017, O MAN was featured as a Top 10 sire of cows on the Top 2000 EBI (Economic Breeding Index) as produced by the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. He ranked at number 6, with 60 daughters appearing in the Top 2000. Through his sons and grandsons, they collectively account for 185 cows on the Top 10 sires of cows list, which goes to show the impact O-Bee Manfred Justice-ET has had over the last 20 years in Ireland.

“Our O MAN daughters are averaging 9453 kg, with 797 kg milk solids (4.78% fat and 3.64% protein). This yield is being produced from grazed grass, supplemented with one ton of concentrate per cow per year. Two of these cows are in their 8th lactation, and two more are in their 7th. These cows have really impressed me with their longevity, fertility, and the volume of milk they produce at excellent levels of solids. At least 75% of my herd now has O MAN blood in their pedigree because I used O MAN extensively until he was no longer available.” – Robert Shannon The O MAN daughters in the Robert Shannon herd have achieved longevity.

Robert & Shirley Shannon, West Cork, Ireland, appreciate the unique contribution that O MAN has made to their herd.

SUCCESS IN PASTURE SYSTEMS “We started using WWS genetics in 2015, aiming to breed a robust cow with good production and fertility. The first heifers bred by WWS genetics calved this year, and we are really happy with how they are performing. We also use the WMS mating program and find it a huge advantage. It takes care of all inbreeding concerns, and works on a corrective basis to breed better cows.” – Philip Britton, Ireland

Philip and Michael Britton, Mullinahone in Co. Tipperary, Ireland, credit the WMS Mating Program for helping move their herd forward.

Pictured below are daughters of PREDESTINE (left cow) and ST. LOUIS (right two cows) in the Britton herd.

“I have had great results with WWS genomic sires to date. I mitigate risk of genomic sires by selecting for strong paternal and maternal lines, along with the traits required in my breeding program. I use a range of breeding companies’ sires in my breeding program, but have found that WWS sires, on average, have more reliable proof information and leave consistent lines of productive daughters in my herd.” – Alastair Robinson, Canterbury, New Zealand Alastair Robinson discusses genetic solutions with Craig Robertson, Genetic Products Manager at World Wide Sires New Zealand.

“The first crop of heifers by WWS bulls have calved in this spring, and I am delighted with them. The bulls I used have done exactly what they said they would. I now have milky cows with correct udders, that go back in calf.” – Mel Martin, Ireland
