Specifically, you will be interested to know: As the capital of Washington Wine Country, the Walla Walla Valley is home to more than 130 wineries, 90 tasting rooms and over 2,800 acres of grapevines. Located on latitude 46, Walla Walla Valley straddles the line between the Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France. The name Walla Walla is taken from the Sahaptin language of the native Walla Walla, Cayuse and Umatilla tribes, and means “place of many waters.” The name pays homage to the abundant rivers and streams of the Walla Walla Valley. In 1805 Lewis & Clark were the first explorers to pass through the Walla Walla Valley. Their journals noted that the people they

encountered here were among the friendliest they had encountered in their journey. That friendly warm welcome continues today. In 2013, Walla Walla was recognized by Fodor’s as one of the “10 Best Small towns in America.” In 2015 Walla Walla was identified by Theculturetrip.com as one of the 10 most beautiful towns in Washington as well as being named a finalist in the Sunset magazine’s award for best food town in the west. There’s much more waiting to be discovered in and around Walla Walla. Downtown Walla Walla thrives on the harmonious combination of the old and new. A peaceful walk through the tree-lined downtown area reveals a functional mix of clothing stores, galleries, tasting rooms, cafes, book stores, restaurants and more. There’s an economic balance between agriculture, in the present as well as the past, and newer ventures such as technology. Main Street is populated with businesses open for a century, as well as those that just opened in the past year. Add numerous pieces of public art on street corners to the variety of prospering businesses in renovated historic buildings and the result is a world-class destination. This modern experience is set in a historical environment that reaches back to the mid-1800s, Walla Walla’s Main Street has captured a bit of Americana the community shares with pride. It has also attracted plenty of attention from across the country. The Downtown restoration and preservation effort has been honored with a number of national awards, for food, wine and historic preservation. Among others, special awards have included selection by the National Main Street Center as a Great American Main Street and being named one of 12 Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust For Historic Preservation. Sunset Magazine named Walla Walla’s as the Best Main Street in The West and its Wine Destination of the Year. Top Value Reviews recently named Walla Walla as number 17 on its list of the top 50 Best Small Town Main Streets. The city has also been honored several times as a “Tree City U.S.A.” Relax and stroll through the area and stop at some of the shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Soldiers, Pioneers & Indian People Carrying the Past into the Future at Fort Walla Walla Museum by James Payne, Executive Director

ong known as “The Cradle of Northwest History,” the Walla Walla region maintains a relationship to the past that helps provide its distinctiveness for today’s visitors. At Fort Walla Walla Museum, the mission of discovering, preserving and sharing that heritage is an ongoing task. Through a 17 building pioneer settlement, four large exhibit halls, several special events, lecture series, classes and more than 40 living history performances each year, the Museum annually beckons travelers from all 50 states and more than 35 foreign countries. The Museum also features an engaging Entry Hall loaded with exhibits. Among them, a diorama of Lewis & Clark in Wallah Wallah Country, military displays, Plateau Indian beadwork, heritage dresses, children’s hands-on stations, plus restrooms and a well-stocked Museum Store. A new collection of David Manual art bronzes enhances the visitor experience. Young kids

enjoy the wooden play fort on the enclosed grounds. History began in this region in 1805/6 when the journals of the Lewis & Clark Expedition documented the interaction with the Cayuse, Palouse, Walla Walla and Wanapum peoples. That first contact set the stage for the ongoing relationship between the United States and the Indian people who continue to thrive in their homeland. The Museum portrays this enduring story in a major, dynamic exhibit entitled Through War and Peace: American Military and the People of the Homeland tribes. Following the early explorers, came the people of the fur trade era. Employees of the Northwest Company followed by the Hudson’s Bay Company interacted with members from the Homeland Tribes. While it had to be rebuilt twice, the trader’s Fort Walla Walla along the Columbia River existed nearly four decades. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman arrived in

HiSTory oF THe valley 1836 and began their missionary work among local Indian people. Many members of the nearby Cayuse Tribe died when a measles epidemic reached Whitman Mission via the ever-growing numbers of pioneers along the Oregon Trail. This event added to existing friction and led to the killing of the Whitmans and 11 other pioneers by several Cayuse people in 1847. Occasional hostilities continued for nearly a decade until the signing of the treaty in 1855 near what would become the center of Walla Walla. After two temporary forts, a permanent U.S. military Fort Walla Walla was opened in 1858. While soldiers from the fort were involved in the final battles of the regional Indian Wars, the fort’s presence provided peace for more than 99% of its duration. With peace, the number of newcomers into the area bloomed. Farming pioneers were followed by miners passing through the region on their way to the Idaho goldfields in the 1860s. A community quickly grew around the fort and agriculture became the economic base. Fires and ﬂoods sometimes devastated the community, but the resilience of the people served to rebuild the town better than before. After the turn of the century, a military presence was no longer needed. Except for a brief period during World War I, the post was closed

in 1910. A group of local men served in the 146th Field Artillery, one of the most active batteries during WWI. Two of the large 155mm cannons used by this unit are on display. By 1922, the buildings of the fort were turned over to the Veterans Bureau, the forerunner of the modern Veterans Administration. During WWII Walla Walla was the home of an army hospital, air base and POW camp for German soldiers. All this rich history sits amid the vineyards, orchards, and fields of Walla Walla, the playground of the entire region. We must embrace our past. Heritage is the thread that binds the fabric of our families, communities and nation. It defines who we are and serves as the foundation for our current economy. Enjoy Walla Walla’s historic downtown, beautiful old homes and heritage sites. Bring your children and grandchildren to see Fort Walla Walla Museum’s outstanding collections and exhibits to experience the story of the area’s people from the days of Lewis & Clark through WWII. Fort Walla Walla Museum features new exhibits each year. In 2016, one of our most popular special exhibits to date, Walla Walla and the World Wars, will run through September 5. Featuring over 400 artifacts and 100 photos, this exhibit shares many of the rich connections between

the two World Wars and this area. Also learn about our region’s rich heritage of Indian culture, agriculture and much more in our galleries, and step back in time as you stroll through our pioneer settlement – perhaps enjoying some entertainment by our Living History Players (see website for schedule). You won’t want to miss our Museum Store, featuring hundreds of items from books, artwork and local specialty foods, as well as something to remember your Museum visit. Area Museums

Museums in southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon offer a glimpse of the people and customs of the past. The Tamástslikt Cultural Institute in Pendleton honors 10,000 years of vibrant history of the original inhabitants of the region. It includes a fascinating past, a rich present and bright future. Several museums are restored homes that tell how their families lived in days gone by. Many of the museums host special events, workshops, craft demonstrations and seasonal activities the whole family can enjoy.

Museum After Hours is a monthly presentation series touching on topics ranging from regional culture and history to the roles and responsibilities of museums within our communities. The Museum also offers frequent classes. Special events include Fort Walla Walla Days on June 11-12 and Ice Cream Social on August 21. Visit one of Walla Walla’s oldest mansions turned museum and learn how a young textile salesman from England made his fortune in America’s Wild West. William and Isabelle Kirkman became pillars of the community and completed this grand home in 1880. The Frazier Farmstead Museum 1403 Chestnut St., Milton-Freewater This museum is on the original homesite of community founder W.S. Frazier. Frenchtown Historic Site 8364 Old Highway 12 Eight miles west of Walla Walla Three miles east of Lowden The site preserves the memory of several parts of local history including the former settlement of Frenchtown, the mission and cemetery of St. Rose of Lima and the Battle of Walla Walla, also known as the Battle of Frenchtown. Frenchtown began as a settlement of French Canadian trappers employed by Hudson’s Bay Company and their families in about 1824. Many of those buried in the cemetery are those families. Prior to the ratification of treaties creating reservations for the Indian Tribes, war broke out, the local battle was part of the larger Yakima Indian War which continued until the fall of 1858. However the 4-day battle at Frenchtown determined the control of Walla Walla and the surrounding lands. It was also the longest military battle in Washington state’s history. The St. Rose Mission Church was constructed on the lower portion of the Frenchtown Historic Site in 1876. It was actively used until about 1900 and removed from the site in 1911. Walla Walla County’s long agricultural history has continually grown and diversified to meet changing market demands. From the area’s first crop, potatoes, planted at Fort Nez Perce in 1825, to orchards, blueberries, strawberries and grapes, the area holds a bountiful harvest. While most acres are still devoted to wheat, the area has produced peas, lettuce, asparagus, spinach, onions and more. Agriculture remains vital to the Valley, as it was in the 1800s and with continuing innovations for a future that’s just as bountiful. Walla Walla has two Farmer’s Markets, the Downtown Farmers’ Market runs Saturdays from May through the last weekend in October at Main and 4th. The Walla Walla Valley Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays May through mid-September at the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds. 20 Wall a Wall a Valley Visitor Guide

The Downtown Farmers’ Market, Saturdays, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., sets up shop at Main and 4th from May through October. Area bands perform in concert during the market while you shop for farm fresh produce. A large assortment of vendors and artisans offer a variety of goods including produce, plants, art, jewelry, soaps and more. The mixture of families and farms, art and gardens, has always been highlighted at the Walla Walla Valley Farmer’s Market at the Fairgrounds. There’s often music while you shop as well as plenty to see and experience.

Walla Walla Sweets--Washington State’s Official Vegetable Walla Walla Sweet Onions have been grown in the area for more than 110 years, the mild flavor of the onion made it a favorite, with increasing popularity and availability through the years. Designated as the official vegetable of Washington State in 2007, the Walla Walla Sweet Onion season runs from about the third week of June through September. In the beginning of the sweet onion harvest, the area hosts the Sweet Onion Festival in Downtown Walla Walla along Main Street, in June. The festival is right beside the Walla Walla Valley Farmers Market that weekend, amplifying the excitement. Because they have a higher water content than most onions, Walla Walla Sweets have a delicate flavor but a shorter shelf life. The Valley is rich with things to do, rain or shine, in any season. Take a walk, a drive or bike ride and enjoy the beautiful area. The area offers plenty of activities to choose. Among other things, Walla Walla has acres of public parks, many with state-of-the-art playgrounds. Fort Walla Walla Park has horseshoe pits, sand volleyball facilities, a model car track and model airplane field. There’s also a bicycle motocross track, skateboard park, dog park, disc golf course and a paved bicycle trail. Howard Tietan Park has new play equipment, including a NEOS, for hours of entertainment. There are small neighborhood parks, like Menlo park and larger ones like Pioneer Park. Each has its own character and activities available. Hiking trails near Mill Creek abound through Rooks Park and the Bennington Lake Recreation Area, east of Walla Walla. You might spot herons, kingfishers, other water fowl and maybe a deer.

Waitsburg, Prescott and Dayton also have swimming pools for summer fun. Dayton has the new Blue Mountain Station, the location of artisan food producers. Learn about local food production and take an educational tour. Waitsburg also is home to several lavender farms. Lavender’s R Us and Sleepy Hollow Lavender Farm, accent the area’s wheat acreage with a stunning burst of color. When your family needs indoor fun, visit the Children’s Museum of Walla Walla. Summer in the Valley

Summer usually means swimming and picnics in the parks. The area has several public pools open in the summertime and more than 600 acres of public parks, many with updated playgrounds. In Walla Walla’s Jefferson Park, Jefferson Pool gives kids an opportunity to splash away some energy while the family prepares a picnic lunch. For information call 509-527-4527. In Milton-Freewater the Joe Humbert Family Aquatic Center provides open swim, lessons and rentals as well as a nearby picnic shelter and park. Call 541-938-9166. Area libraries, Camp Fire and the YMCA offer all kinds of activities in the summer and throughout the rest of the year. The City of Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Department holds classes and activities for both adults and children on a continuing basis. The area offers several skateboard tracks, the first at Fort Walla Walla Park and a Dreamland Skate Parks design in the city’s Sports Complex off Tausick Way in Walla Walla’s

Hiking The area has plenty of paths and trails for all levels of ability, whether you’re going out for a stroll or a more strenuous hike. Tastes Wine, Beer & Cider Visit local tasting rooms to sample the wines produced from the grapes grown within the acclaimed Walla Walla Valley Appellation and the newly established “The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater” AVA. This new wine appellation is one of only two in the world based solely on soil content. The grapes grown on this land have a world renowned taste and quality. The Rocks District includes vineyards of nineteen wine producers and winery facilities for three of them. Every tasting room throughout the region has its own personality reflective of the wines crafted by their expert winemakers. Approximately 80% of the grapes used in the world-famous Walla Walla Valley wines are grown here.

Milton-Freewater is also home to the largest cidery in Oregon. Hard ciders, while huge with flavor, contain less alcohol than wine and are less filling than beer. Only apples grown in the renowned Walla Walla Valley are used in their award-winning cider. A farmhouse nano craft brewery is also located here. They use only the finest ingredients, including estate grown hops and waters sourced from a deep natural spring beneath the brewery. Small batches of Belgian style ales are produced.

Marie Dorian Park Couse Creek Road Located ¾ mile up the Walla Walla River and is home to “The Trail of the Pioneers.” These are the families who came to this area early and stayed to build it step by step. The trail consists of 156 steps, each engraved with the name of one of those pioneer families.

Frazier Farmstead Museum 1403 Chestnut Street Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Museum is a wonderful display of the area’s rich history. The Farmstead also houses a 1918 barn, the McCoy cabin (the first cabin built in the county), and a number of other structures that all played a role in the working farm.
