Chaplain director of Newhouse

Thursday, December 6,1873

The Rev. James Dennis, chaplain at the Walla Walla Veterans A d m i n i s t r a t i o n Hospital, has been appointed executive director of Newliouse, Walla Walla's halfway house for alcoholics at 612 E. Main. Since the halfway house is low on money, Dennis has agreed to work for a $1 per year salary, the County Board of Commissioners was told by Kelly Wylie, chairman of the board of directors of the Walla Walla Halfway House Society.

Dennis told commissioners he would accept f u r t h e r compensation for his services if Newliouse ever gets into a firm financial position. The men who live at Newhouse "need a bridge back into our community, back into society," Dennis said. As executive director of Newhouse, Dennis said he will be responsible for operation of the house and development of treatment for alcoholism. He

said. (,' o u n t y C o m rn i s s i o n e r 1'JugeiH- Kelly expressed interest in this idea because U. J. "Joe" Younker, administrator of St. Mary, has said that all people brought to the hospital's detoxification unit do not require the expense of medical treatment. The residents of Newhouse could "act as babysitters" for the people brought into the house to dry out, Dennis said. Later in the day. C o m in i s s i o n e r J ames

said he hopes to build a professional counseling staff. Newhouse now houses an average of eight to ten men, but Dennis said the program will eventually need a larger facility and housing for women. The Newliouse board of directors has also discussed the possibility of providing a "dry out" unit for people who do not need the intensive medical care p r o v i d e d by S t . M a r y Community Hospital's detoxification program, Dennis
