Gobble Up This Turkey Trivia Roughly 45 million turkeys are sold and cooked for Thanksgiving meals every year in the United States. As families dig into that delicious meal, some may wonder more about the delicious bird before them. Here are some known and lesser-known facts about Tom Turkey. • The taste of turkeys has to do with their age. An older male is preferable to a younger male, because the young “tom” is stringy. Conversely, younger female hens are preferred to older ones. • A turkey less than 16 weeks old is called a fryer. An older turkey between 5 and 7 months of age is known as a roaster. • Turkeys are a type of pheasant. They are the only breed of poultry native to the Western Hemisphere. • Wild turkeys are able to fly for short durations and up to 55 mph. However, domesticated turkeys raised on farms for food are bred to be fat and meaty, which prevents their ability to get airborne. • The turkey is no exception to other birds. Sometimes it likes to spend the night in trees. • Benjamin Franklin was one person who argued vehemently on behalf of the turkey being the national symbol of America. However, as most know, the bald eagle won out. • The first turkeys to domesticated were from Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, the turkey was a sacrificial bird. • Male turkeys make the commonly known “gobble” sound, particularly during breeding seasons to attract a mate. Females, however, cluck. • A mature turkey will have about 3,500 feathers. That’s a lot of plucking to do before the bird can be eaten. • Minnesota and North Carolina produce the most turkeys for sale annually. • The skin that hangs from a turkey’s neck is known as a wattle. The fleshy growth on the base of the beak is known as the snood. • Every year 90 percent of Americans enjoy a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving, compared to 50 percent on Christmas. • America doesn’t consume the most turkey per capita; Israel does.

Ready Your Home for Holiday Guests Arguably the best part of the holiday season is the chance to catch up with family and friends. Because many people are busier than ever, the holidays are the one time of year many families reunite, often over a holiday meal.

This year, with so many families sacrificing thanks to the economic downturn, chances are more and more relatives will be welcoming guests into their homes rather than directing road weary travelers to the nearest hotel. That means many homeowners will be preparing their homes for guests this holiday season. To get a head start, consider the following tips.

• Ask guests about pet allergies. Before any guests hit the road and start their journey, hosts with pets should be sure to ask if their guests have any pet allergies. While there is medication to make being around a pet bearable for people with pet allergies, such medication requires a prescription, meaning hosts should make prospective guests aware well in advance of the holidays to make sure everyone is comfortable.

• Stock up on linens. Guests are going to need to shower and wash up, and they’ll feel especially comfortable if the room where they’ll be staying is equipped with towels, other linens and even bathrobes once they arrive. Also, be sure to have a change of sheets readily available, and make sure the sheets and pillowcases on the bed are fresh for the first day guests are scheduled to arrive.

• Talk to the kids in advance. When guests are staying overnight for the holidays, parents should discuss this with their children in advance of the holiday. Explain that kids might need to share a bedroom with their siblings for a night, and make it seem as fun as possible. Explain that extra people around the house for a few days will be fun, and that each night will be akin to a sleepover with friends.

• Clear your schedule as much as possible. Once guests arrive, there is a possibility they’ll feel uncomfortable in another person’s home. However, hosts can lessen those feelings by clearing their schedule and spending some time with their guests, be it a day out shopping or simply staying home and watching a movie or a ballgame.

• Stock the pantries. While hosts shouldn’t feel responsible for feeding their guests three meals per day, it is a good idea to have a fully stocked pantry when hosting guests for the holidays. This is particularly important if some of those guests are children, who seem to be more hungry than adults. In addition to food, be sure there’s enough coffee and coffee cups to satisfy all adult guests throughout their stay. Have some regular as well as decaffeinated coffee on hand, and stock up on tea as well.

• Clean the home. While cleaning the house is a given, be especially diligent when cleaning areas where guests will be sleeping. Hosts planning on using futons or pull-out couches should clean those arrangements, particulary hosts who are also pet owners, and test them out to see if they’re comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep.

Safety First When Stringing Holiday Lights Perhaps no holiday tradition is more visible than decorative lights. Whether on the house or on the tree in the front picture window, holiday lights help create a festive mood for all. While aesthetically appealing, holiday lighting displays can also be quite dangerous. Older lights or poorly planned lighting projects can quickly turn tragic. However, this much beloved holiday tradition does not have to cease and desist. Instead, some simple safety precautions are all it takes to ensure this year’s lighting display is both stunning and safe. • Make sure exterior lights are designed for outdoor use. Not all lights can handle the elements, so those old Christmas tree lights might not be able to enjoy a second life as part of a home’s exterior lighting decor. • Plug lights directly into the electrical sockets rather than relying heavily on extension cords. Employ surge protector strips if there are not enough outlets available. Before plugging anything in, consult the fuse box to determine how much each circuit can safely handle. • Don’t use damaged lighting sets, including those with frayed strings, unstable connections, exposed wires, or broken or cracked sockets. • Make sure all external lights are securely attached. Wind can do significant damage to bulbs, which can lead to additional safety risks. As a precaution, attach all lights firmly to walls or anything else that will not blow away when a stiff wind arrives. • Inside the home, be extra careful when using an artificial Christmas tree. Electric lights should never be used on a metallic tree. • Routinely check all cords’ temperatures. If a cord feels too hot, unplug it and find a replacement. • Don’t leave the lights on when no adults are home. If the home is empty or if just kids are home, make sure the lights are off. Avoid using timers that automatically turn the lights on, as it’s possible they will turn on when no one is home. Unplug all cords when going away for the holidays just to be safe. • Make sure all cords are visible. Don’t bury cords underneath rugs or floor mats to avoid personal injuries. • Hanging lights shouldn’t be a solo project. Whether hanging lights inside or outside, never do so alone. A stiff wind might come along and blow the ladder away or an unstable ladder might lead to a fall. Accidents happen when hanging lights indoors as well, so make sure to have an adult partner on hand to avoid injury. • Make sure kids cannot reach lighting displays. Kids often adore holiday lighting displays and their natural curiosity is to reach for lights. Avoid potential accidents by keeping lights well beyond the reach of children.
