“When I take time to reflect, strong impressions and emotions about this town rise to the surface. Walla Walla and its sense of community is positively a part of who I am. It’s that the big horizon here seems so filled with clarity and possibility, and the community so brimming with goodwill, intelligence and enterprise. I see almost endless wheat fields, hearty vineyards and colorful produce stands. I see whimsical sculpture on downtown streets, talented chefs in restaurant kitchens...and you can ride your bike anywhere here, day or night, city street or county road.” Dr. George Bridges, President, Whitman College
Primarily three tribes, the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla, inhabited the Northwest’s Plateau region for 10,000 years.

History of the Valley
Soldiers, Pioneers & Indian People Carrying the Past into the Future at Fort Walla Walla Museum Long known as “The Cradle of Northwest History,” the Walla Walla region maintains a relationship to the past that helps provide its distinctiveness for today’s visitors. At Fort Walla Walla Museum, the mission of discovering, preserving and sharing that heritage is an ongoing task. Through a 17-building pioneer settlement, four large exhibit halls, several special events and more than 40 Living History performances each year, the Museum annually beckons travelers from all 50 states and more than 35 countries. The Museum also features a new Entry Hall & Exhibit Galleries with many new exhibits, Lewis & Clark in Wallah Wallah Country diorama, military displays, new restrooms, and expanded Museum Store. History began when the Lewis & Clark expedition first passed through what is now Walla Walla County in 1805. Nevertheless, those they met in the region— the Cayuse, Palouse, Walla Walla, and Wanapum peoples—lived here for countless generations in harmony with the seasons and the bounty their world provided

them. That first contact set the stage for a relationship between regional Indian people and the United States that still continues. The Museum portrays this ongoing story in a major exhibit entitled Through War and Peace: American Military and the People of the Homeland Tribes. Following the great explorers, came the people of the fur trade era. Occasional conflicts first arose between some individuals with the Northwest Company and Hudson’s Bay Company and Indian people they encountered. The traders’ Fort Walla Walla along the Columbia River existed nearly four decades, but caused much consternation among the local inhabitants. Soon thereafter another form of contact came to the region. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, as well as other missionaries, first arrived at Hudson’s Bay Company trading posts before beginning their ministry among the Indians. Intercultural difficulties often marked their stay in the region. Many Indian people died when a measles epidemic brought in by evergrowing numbers of pioneers along the Oregon Trail reached Whitman Mission. Mistrust of the Whitmans
After the turn of the century, a military presence was no longer necessary. Except for a brief period during World War I, the post was abandoned in 1910. By 1922, the buildings of the fort had been turned over to the Veterans Bureau, forerunner of the mod-

With peace, the number of newcomers into the area boomed. Farming pioneers were followed by gold miners passing through the region on their way to the Idaho gold fields in the 1860s. A community grew up around the fort and agriculture was established as the economic foundation. Trains, electricity, telephones, automobiles and airplanes also helped shape the area. Fires and floods sometimes devastated the community, but the resilience of the people served to rebuild the community better than before.

by some of the Cayuse people led to further tragedy. Nearly a decade of occasional hostilities followed, prior to the signing of treaties in 1855 and 1856 near what would become the center of Walla Walla. A permanent U.S. military Fort Walla Walla was opened in 1858. The final battles of the regional Indian Wars involved soldiers posted at the fort.

Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center still serves the needs of veterans throughout southeast Washington, northeast Oregon, and westcentral Idaho amid the vineyards, orchards and fields of Walla Walla, the playground of the entire region. Bring your children and grandchildren to see this outstanding collection of 19th and 20th century artifacts. This year, the new Entry Hall & Exhibit Galleries continues to tell the story of the area’s people from the days of Lewis & Clark through regional participation in World War II with more than 30 new and enhanced exhibits. 20 Walla Walla Valley Visitor Guide
Taste of the Valley Walla Walla County’s long agricultural history has grown and diversified to meet changing market demands. From the area’s first crop, potatoes, planted at Fort Nez Perce in 1825, to orchards, strawberries and grapes,
the area holds a bountiful harvest. While most acres are still devoted to wheat, the area has produced peas, lettuce, asparagus, spinach, onions and more. Agriculture remains vital to the Valley, as it was in the 1800s and with continuing innovations for a future that’s just as bountiful.
Walla Walla Valley Farmers Market The mixture of families and farms is highlighted at the Walla Walla Valley Farmers Market. The Farmers Market brings the area’s variety of produce fresh from the farms to shoppers. The market is also an opportunity for an enjoyable outing and a great learning experience for the kids. There’s music while you shop as well as plenty to see and experience. The Market is made up of a wide variety of vendors, growers and artisans offering produce, hand made jewelry, soaps and much more. For information visit
Saturdays & Sundays Downtown Walla Walla May to October Music & Family Entertainment 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Special Events are scheduled throughout the season including a Holiday Market, December 3

Taste of the Valley
Walla Walla Sweets— Washington State’s Official Vegetable Walla Walla Sweet Onions have been grown in the area for more than 110 years, the mild flavor of the onion made it a favorite, with increasing popularity and availability through the years.
Corsica
Designated as the official vegetable of Washington State in 2007, the Walla Walla Sweet Onion season runs from about the third week of June through September. Right in the middle of the sweet onion harvest, the area
hosts the Sweet Onion Festival in Downtown Walla Walla along Main Street, this year July 16-17. The festival is right beside the Walla Walla Valley Farmers Market that weekend, amplifying the excitement. Because they have a higher water content than most onions, Walla Walla Sweets have a delicate flavor but a shorter shelf life. For more information and Walla Walla Sweet Onion recipes and tips, visit sweetonions.org.
More than a century ago on the island of Corsica, off the West coast of Italy, a French soldier, Peter Pieri located a type of Italian sweet onion seed that produced a mild variety of onion, when he later came to America he brought it to the Walla Walla Valley where it has flourished ever since.
Calvi is a city on the French island of Corsica and the biggest tourist centre of the island proper.
One winery, two labels, three cows... Spofford Station winemaker, Lynne Chamberlain, is the only native of Walla Walla to manage her own vineyards, produce her own wines and raise Cabernet Cows to boot! Both of Lynne’s labels, Spofford Station and James Leigh Cellars are estate wines. The Spofford Station Syrah received 95 points and the James Leigh Syrah received 94 points in Wine Enthusiast. Both were named to the Top 100 wines.

Waitsburg’s Town Hall renovated Waitsburg 55 Plus, Odako Club, Ed Lawrence, PacifiCorp Foundation, the Esary Trust, and the Bald Trust. The main hall measures about 50feet square and its beautiful hardwood floor accommodates dancing. It’s well lighted and lends an airy feeling with its gracefully arched ceiling. There are tables and chairs to comfortably seat over 100 guests. A well-equipped kitchen can accommodate cooking duties for up to 290 people, the hall’s maximum occupant load. For smaller meetings, the Fireside Room, near the front entrance, fills that role well. As mentioned, the renovation included upgrades to the rest rooms to accommodate handicapped individuals. Rental rates are based on occupancy numbers and whether the kitchen is needed. A damage deposit is required and varies depending upon alcohol usage, and a cleaning service is offered. For information about rental rates, availability, damage deposit, alcohol requirements or other questions, please call 509-3376671.

Area residents and visitors alike who may be searching for a location for a wedding reception, to celebrate an anniversary or make a business presentation before a large group should consider Waitsburg Town Hall. With its adjacent kitchen, the hall is perfect for family reunions, school dances, or awards banquets. The former American Legion Hall at 121 Main Street recently underwent a $130,000 renovation, and now boasts a brighter interior, picturesque façade, handicapped-accessible rest rooms, and comfortable interior thanks to a new heating and air conditioning system. The 1928 building suffered snow damage to its roof in 2008, which temporarily put the facility out of commission and prompted a repair and renovation project funded by nearly $87,000 from insurance and another $30,000 given by Dr. S. R. and Laura Jean Hevel. It’s been 35 years since the building’s last modification. Other charitable organizations, individuals, foundations and civic groups in the area also contributed to the project. Contributors included Commercial Club,
