As a creative, my life path has never been on a singular trajectory. After grad school, my goal was to become a footwear designer at a company, and learn on their dime, so one day I could teach design with an industry-specific perspective. I was hired at a small company, so I wore many hats, and learned a lot, quick. This portfolio shows my depth and strength as an interdisciplinary designer. During my time at KEEN, through my tenure at Pensole, and still today, my service has been mentorship to many creatives in different areas of study in art(s) and design. I served as the Director of Education for six years at PENSOLE Academy, who is now working towards HBCU accreditation, as Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design in Detroit. Our Mission: To give students access to career education and professional development in the design industry, regardless of socioeconomic background. Having professional experience in performing arts, design education/pedagogy and the design industry, my strength is training others. Through curriculum design, expanding design-specific opportunities for youth and adults transitioning to careers in design, and working with industry partners to expand BIPOC and women representation in the field of design. Curriculum, programs and processes that I designed during my tenure at PENSOLE are still being used there today.
Creating has always been a constant for me; something I could feel at home doing, no matter where I lived. AZZAMARIE Studio offers small-batch paper goods & gifts that capture life’s connections and offer others the chance to do the same. From art, color design, curriculum design, choreography & direction, footwear design, hand-lettered doodles, jewelry making, and murals…I navigate life through making.

I served as the Director of Education (6 years). I was the only staff member to hold a Masters Degree and have professional experience working in both education/pedagogy and industry. My focus was on building design education opportunities for youth and adults specifically in these communities: BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and women. This partnership was for a Bachelors in Product Creation pairing ArtCenter and PENSOLE staff together, building on the strength of a 8 year partnership; a 1-week Design Sprint at PENSOLE for Design Students from ArtCenter. The full proposal with all documentation hit the desk of ArtCenter’s president on Dec. 5, 2019. Needless to say, priorities from both parties shifted…
