LETTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGEL ROMERO FROM L-R: JUDD MINTER, JULIANNE KAYE, LESLEY-ANN BRANDT, SARAH GRIFFIN BERNS, ANNA GRIFFIN, RUSSELL BAER

As I write this, we are racing to make deadline. It has been an intense and challenging effort as we are not only delivering the July/ August Issue of Coco Eco, but simultaneously launching our new website. Much has happened since we published our last edition, and you might have noticed a slight delay in production. It was time for us to grow, and the experiences we have encountered in the last three months have taken us on an exciting adventure. We have worked hard spending many hours brainstorming, had endless late night pep talks, strategy sessions, and a few sleepless nights, whilst considering Coco Eco’s mission, and how we can best serve our global community and our planet. We hope you like the results of our labor, and we look forward to sharing news over the coming months about the many things we’re up to, as we continue to expand. Without further delay, I introduce what is undoubtedly our best issue ever. The theme Jet Set was chosen not only as a great vehicle for summer, but also because we wanted to produce a global issue focusing on current events, and the people and organizations taking action. We have been hugely blessed to meet and support inspiring women such as Maria Bello and Christy Turlington, sharing the work of their respective charities, We Advance and Every Mother Counts. Our cover girl is sassy South African Spartacus

TO YOU THE JETSET ISSUE

actress, Lesley-Ann Brandt who is on a serious mission as a global ambassador for the planet, and we couldn’t do an issue called Jet Set without a sit-down with the Godfather himself, Sir Richard Branson. Between speaking out about the illegal rhino poaching industry with Wild Aid, or crusading to Save The Arctic with Greenpeace, he is as always leading the charge, doing his part to better our world. In a first for Coco Eco, our fashion story Turn Up the Heat is a visually stunning story that was shot in cinematic splendor, showcasing essential wardrobe pieces for the season. Our second story, SANS Fuss, features bright summer hues shot against the vibrant backdrop of Brooklyn, New York. Beauty highlights key looks for summer in Hot Weather, Cool Beauty, as well as our top picks for sunscreens, fake tans and travel essentials, and our Eco Chic Resort Guide features two ultimate yet diverse experiences; the sandy beaches and jungles of Costa Rica, and an eco-luxe safari adventure at Thula Thula, South Africa. We hope you love this Jet Set Issue, and that it inspires you to escape, explore and enjoy a fabulous summer! Sincerely,

Anna Griffin Publisher & Editor in Chief P.S. If you happen to travel Virgin America through July 31st, look for our short film “Rhinos & Runways” on Channel 11

THE BEST OF

COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK WRITTEN BY: SASS BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY AS LISTED

Copenhagen Fashion Week features five fairs and a catwalk schedule of over forty shows. Reminiscent of its close cousin, Berlin fashion week, it tends more towards the mainstream in terms of aesthetic, with a bit of Swedish craft thrown in. Amidst the mountain of brands showing were some outstanding labels, with the Gallery and Terminal 2 locations featuring the edgiest of the range. With a multitude of coordinated agents showrooms, openings and events, it’s a tough gig to negotiate in mid February with frigid temperatures in the low 30’s, but well worth the effort! Renowned for her crumpled country couture, Ewa i Walla works with natural fabrications such as such as cotton, linen, silk and wool. Inspired by the past, her collection has an abiding romanticism and naive sensuality, expressed through a vintage country romp in the hay. Her designs, full of passion, personality and beauty, transcend trends, and are designed to cross coordinate across seasons, to create new silhouettes and previously un-thought of combinations. Guðrun & Guðrun is a Faroese company, owned by two women, living in the remote Faroe Islands. Hand knitted from 100% untreated and un-dyed Faroese wool, the collection is the epitome of slow fashion. Gudrun and Gudrun achieve a contemporary interpretation of traditional patterns, with a whimsical take on the punk, grunge aesthetic, through open knit structures, oversized silhouettes, layered pieces, and the beauty and slight irregularity and character of hand-craft.

Working with 100% alpaca, Swedish brand Tolfesbo hand craft their knitted accessories collection in Bolivia. Produced entirely in the natural colors of alpaca, the collection features a timeless aesthetic, designed to be worn again and again without going out of fashion, and incorporates, wraps, scarves, leg warmers, gloves and hats. All designs are produced under fair labor conditions by Bolivian craftsmen, and help preserve the indigenous craft skills of the region.

EUROPE’S CUTTING EDGE DESIGN TALENT WHITE Milan is one of my very favorite fashion trade show events to attend. Guaranteed to showcase some of Europe’s edgiest designers, the show never disappoints. Always inspirational, the show is populated by Europe’s most fashionable and interesting people and brands, and specializes in the new, the edgy and the avant-garde. Designers making a difference in how they do business through the products they produce are scattered throughout the show, from the avant-garde basement selection to the mainstream show. Guila’s asymmetric styling often incorporates a single flounce or tuck, but not in a girly overly pretty way, instead with a sense of volume and a sculptural quality. Summer is upon us, and with it comes long lazy days on the beach or by the pool. Buying a new suit for summer can be a challenge, but thankfully for us eco-fashionistas there are plenty of options out there for the conscious beach babe. CALI DREAMING Drawing inspiration from nude shades and sand-speckled skin tones illuminated by the golden hues of the California sun, California Dreaming creates timeless swimwear that emphasizes seamless silhouettes and textures. While these suits may require a bit of a tan to come into their own, the effect of the subtle shades on sun-kissed skin is quite gorgeous. Because the styles are simple and tend to blend with the wearer’s skin and subtly disappear, they can also easily double as underwear. The latest collection features simple styles, including triangle bikinis, bandeau tops and strapless one-pieces, in muted, flattering solids and timeless prints of faded cheetah and classic stripes. EMOBI AUSTRALIA In a country famous for surfing and beautiful beaches it would only make sense that there is at least one company making cute suits and bikinis that are also easy on the planet. Created by Australian designer Jess Salter, Emobi makes fun, fresh, girly swimwear that will be sure to make anyone wearing it happy. Emobi (pronounced e-moby) is a French Polynesian name meaning birth. Launched at Australian Fashion Week in 2007, the line quickly gained international recognition and was during its first year featured in International press including Collezioni Beachwear, Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, InStyle, and Glamour, Zest, Company and Fashion TV. As well as leading UK newspapers, including gracing the front page of The Independent Newspaper, in the first year. All Emobi swimwear is made in Sydney, Australia, using premium breathable UPF 50+ fabric. The colorful prints are original and designed in-house. They’re printed using a range of environmentally friendly water based dyes that minimize the impact on beaches and waterways. The one-pieces, twopieces and separates all have a slight retro vibe yet manages to be fresh and bold at the same time. They’d feel just as home on a rooftop pool party in Brooklyn as they would on Bondai Beach. WWW.EMOBISWIMWEAR.COM PHOTO COURTESY OF EMOBI SWIMWEAR

Karla Colletto uses innovative fabrics and cutting-edge techniques to make tailored one-pieces and bikinis that could best be described as aquatic couture. These suits are made for lounging by the pool with a cocktail in hand and wide-brimmed hat shading you from the sun. Unexpected details like rope ties, twists and cutouts give the pieces an attitude and ensures that the exquisite fabrics are allowed to shine. Karla Colletto received her design education is New England and learned the business by creating everything from sportswear to custom bridal gowns, which may explain why her influences seem to be both glamorous and sporty at the same time. Each piece is carefully designed and manufactured in-house, ensuring that you will get many years of wear out of a piece, if it’s cared for properly. Colletto’s suits have been seen in Sportswear Illustrated’s famed swimsuit issue as well as on a pregnant Uma Thurman.

A 4th generation family business, Eco Swim by Aqua Green is based in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley and, although it is now a global company, still does everything from design to cut and sew locally. With a line consisting of everything from simple to sporty to pinup-worthy polka dot suits and bikinis, their mission is to provide fashion-forward, high-quality swimwear that is also planet friendly, thus reducing the company’s “footprint in the sand.” Eco Swim does this by embracing sustainable technologies and methods, and all their swimwear is made from recycled materials. At the offices, an internal green team heads up initiatives that include simple changes such as a corporate ban on purchases of styrofoam, recycling of all paper, plastics, lightbulbs, and color cartridges. Looking toward the future, Eco Swim is also engaged in more complicated efforts like sustainable fabric initiatives with long term fabric suppliers. The company also regularly organizes beach cleanups and is also involved in community-focused philanthropy, benefiting the families of employees as well as the local community. Eco Swim aims to be the most sustainable swimwear manufacturer on the planet. They know they’re not there yet, but have made a commitment toward trying harder every day. That, for many, is the most important part.

GABRIELA DIAS

A Brazilian model, Gabriela Dias has traveled the world modeling swimwear, and knows a thing or two about what it takes to make a girl look her best on the beach. Her eponymous swimwear line is now in it second year and Dias is highly passionate about creating pieces that she knows women will love wearing. Having spent a good part of her life in a bikini, she also has made sure that her suits are comfortable to wear. In true Brazilian fashion, her line celebrates the female figure and has both bikinis and one-pieces in vibrant colors with unexpected details like braiding, hand-embroidered detailing, shells and other adornments. Dias is also committed to ecological and social responsibility, and carefully hand-selects all fabrics, and all suits are handmade in Brazil by skilled local artisans in certified facilities. Besides ensuring that her line is ethically manufactured, Dias is also in the process of partnering with non-profit organizations to further give back to her homeland. “I get to create my designs in my native country and contribute to the fair working conditions of locals,” she says. “I think that might be what’s most rewarding.” WWW.GDIASSWIM.COM

ASHLEY PAIGE LA-based swimwear designer Ashley Paige has been making spectacular suits for jetsetting Hollywood types since the 90s. Carefully made by hand and embellished with delicate beading, tassels and exquisite patterns, these bikinis are about as haute hippie as it gets. Definitely not for the shy ones, Paige’s suits have been spotted on celebrities like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Liv Tyler and the Hilton Sisters. Paige’s suits are notoriously hard to find online, but if you are in LA be sure to visit her recently opened shop on the corner of Sunset Boulevard, where the designer frequently hosts parties and events. When not designing bikinis, Ashley Paige is a devoted advocate for environmental and animal welfare and sometimes uses her store to facilitate animal adoptions. WWW.ASHLEYPAIGE.COM 60

PHOTOS COURTESY OF AMBIKA BOUTIQUE

AMBIKA Crochet bikinis have come a long way since the 70s and are now a veritable beach staple. Ambika Conroy may have contributed to the renaissance of crochet swimwear when one of her bikinis was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue. The teeny bikini, beautifully worn by model Petra Nemcova, was chosen to grace the cover among the thousands submitted — only about 70 even make it into the magazine each year — a big deal, needless to say. Since then, Ambika’s bikinis have been featured in most major fashion magazines and worn by celebrities ranging from Rosanna Arquette to Carmen Electra. Conroy started crocheting to pass time while working as an assistant on photo shoots. People started taking notice and a business was born. The skimpy bikinis, some of which are gorgeously embellished with beads and hardware, are handcrocheted by Conroy herself or one of the artisans she employs, some who are well into their seventies. Made from 98% cotton and 2% elastic, the suits fit snugly and won’t sag or stretch when you get into the water. All are lined with nude fabric to provide coverage and, if cared for properly, the colors won’t fade. Besides making bikinis, Conroy also has a farm of angora rabbits in Upstate New York, which she uses to craft incredibly soft “friendly fur” angora creations such as hats, leg warmers and gloves. OLGA OLSSON There’s something distinctly glamorous about Olga Olsson’s suits, which look like they belong on a 50s screen siren lounging by a pool somewhere in Palm Springs. Inspired by beaches, mountains, lakes, and cities around the world, designer Ruth Ferguson creates pieces with clean silhouettes, made from luxuriously soft fabrics. The simplicity of her designs ensures that the natural beauty of the raw materials as well as the craftsmanship are allowed to shine. With a focus on ethics and the environment, Olga Olsson, which is partly named after Ferguson’s grandmother, works to support and empower small producers worldwide. Her suits are handmade in Brazil by women who are paid a fair living wage. The manufacturing chain is carefully evaluated to find the most sustainable option for everything from fabrics to printing to manufacturing. A native of England, Ferguson has lived and worked in Cuba, Africa, Central America and Brazil and, after graduating from the London College of Fashion, she worked for highprofile designers like Alexander McQueen and Matthew Williamson. During London Fashion Week 2010, the line was awarded the Ethical Fashion Forum’s Innovation Prize, which rewards innovation in design and sustainability. WWW.OLGAOLSSON.COM

ECO-FRIENDLY

SUNSCREENS FOR SUMMER WRITTEN BY: JOHANNA BJÖRK, WWW.GOODLIFER.COM

Whether you’re out and about during the summer or jetsetting across the warmer parts of the globe, wearing good sunscreen is a must. It’s not just about avoiding overly red skin, but about protecting it against both uva rays, which cause long-term cell damage, and uvb rays, which cause burning. The skin is your body’s largest organ, which is why it’s so important to choose a sunscreen that contains only natural, nonharmful ingredients. These are nine of our favorites. 76

They grace the covers of magazines while we check out at the grocery store and float down red carpets on television while we eat dinner in our ‘jammies. We talk about their relationships and court dates at the water cooler and take pictures of their hair to our stylists in the hope that we walk out of the salon a bit more glamorous than we entered it. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to go through a day without seeing an image of the most beautiful people in the world, which, at times, skews our reality. How refreshing it is then when these beauties give us more to talk about than just their looks. With causes and interests firmly planted in health and sustainability, these amazing women have stepped out of their roles as models and actresses to promote products that make the rest of us a bit more beautiful.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD ARE BEHIND SOME OF THE BEST IN ECO-BEAUTY TODAY 88

Josie Maran’s name is synonymous with eco-beauty. Her hit lineup of beauty products ranging from lipstick to hair mist is infused with the miracle Moroccan oil Argan and is a bestseller at beauty stores nationwide. And rightly so! Having used just about every eco-beauty product on the market I know firsthand just how challenging it is to find makeup that

does what it is supposed to. If your own search for high performance beauty, with even higher standards for health and sustainability, has left you frustrated, I challenge you to hightail it to your local Sephora and give Josie a try. Josie’s personal convictions are what I appreciate most about this brand. In her own words, “I believe that doing the right thing can be glamorous”. From supporting cancer patients at City of Hope with every sale of her GOGO Mascara (which is in my top 5 eco-beauty products ever) to protecting the endangered Polar Bears through her Bear Naked Wipes, this exemplary mom and model-preneur shows us how deep her beauty really is. WWW.JOSIEMARANCOSMETICS.COM A new name in the eco-beauty game is none other than the gorgeous Jessica Alba. This mama is so hot that she was even named “Sexiest Woman in the World” and if you ever saw her role as Nancy Callahan in Sin City, you know why. But if you think that this woman is all about being a sex symbol, think again. Her desire to create the healthiest surroundings for her darling girls, four-year-old Honor and newborn Haven, led her to create The Honest Company. Her partner is Christopher Gavigan, former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World, and together they have formulated a full line of home and body products that promise to be safe and super effective. Honestly speaking, I have not been so excited about a product line in a long time. Being a new mom, I can relate to Jessica’s story and have searched for products that I feel safe using in my home and on my one-year-old daughter. Unfortunately, finding them is tricky and oftentimes they are simply too pricey. The Honest Company has positioned themselves as a source for trustworthy products that parents and nonparents alike can feel good about using in their home, all for a serious bargain and delivered right to your door. In a word- brilliant. Her diaper bundle, which includes gentle biodegradable wipes and plant based disposable diapers with delightful designs, is my new go-to baby shower gift. And I cannot wait to slather on the company’s Honest Sunscreen before long days at the beach this summer. WWW.HONEST.COM

Let’s face it- nothing conjures up images of beautiful women more than three little words- Victoria’s Secret Angel. So when one of these Angels decides to share her beauty secrets with the world, I am definitely going to listen. Miranda Kerr, the stunner from down under, has poured her soul into the creation of her lovely line of skincare, Kora Organics. The range features powerful naturals, like noni, rosehip oil and vitamins A, C and E. Miranda also incorporated Rose Quartz Crystal Energized water into each formulation, infusing a vibration of self-love into each and every product. But this Angel didn’t stop there. She has compiled a collection of her thoughts and life lessons in a book for young adults and hopes to promote health and wellness in younger generations. WWW.KORAORGANICS.COM

LESLEY-ANN

BRANDT Crusading For planet earth WRITTEN BY: ANNA GRIFFIN

South African siren, Lesley-Ann Brandt, is on an international crusade to save our planet. Best known as Naevia, the sultry slave girl to Lucy Lawless in the first two seasons of the hit show Spartacus, stunning Lesley-Ann is as passionate about her blossoming career as she is being a voice for Mother Earth. A global citizen who already calls both Capetown and New Zealand home, she recently relocated to LA and is on a fast path to stardom. Educated and involved on issues ranging from the illegal rhino poaching industry to drilling in the Arctic, she converses with an authentic candor and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She’s easy to talk to, and it’s refreshing to be in the company of this independently-minded, vibrant woman who is genuinely excited about the responsibility her celebrity brings, and motivated by an inner call to action.

COCO ECO | COVER STORY

COCO ECO: You’re from South Africa, but moved here from New Zealand. Tell us about that. LESLEY-ANN BRANDT: My father got a job offer when I was in high school and we moved to New Zealand, much to my dismay because I had to emigrate and leave my friends. The first couple of years was kind of rough, but I’ve come to love the country. Being in New Zealand, I have become more eco-conscious because they are socially aware of their impact on the environment. CEM: How has that affected your lifestyle?

I think the average person doesn’t realize that it is so easy to make a few small changes, getting into recycling, not using plastic, unplugging their appliances, etc.

LAB: Having grown up in Cape Town, one of the most beautiful places in the world, I grew up in nature and with an appreciation and love for the coastline, for water and for hiking. However it was in New Zealand that I became more aware of things like recycling, and simple things like choosing indigenous plants for my garden. I became known as the “Recycling Nazi!” Even more recently, my Spartacus co-star Lucy Lawless, became a Greenpeace activist and camped out on a boat that was bound for the Arctic, because Big Oil is wanting to drill there. It’s funny because after the awful oil spill off the coast of New Zealand which damaged the coastline and killed a lot of wildlife, they are still cleaning it up. The idea of now going and drilling in one of the most pristine places in the world, and the potential devastion if something should go wrong and there is another spill, makes me want to do something. I want my children and their children to have the choice to visit polar bears, and I don’t want the eco-system there to be damaged because it supports our planet in so many ways. I’m no hippy, but I am someone who is certainly aware of their own impact as an individual. Sometimes being eco-conscious is a lot for people. There is so much information out there, a lot of it scientific, and they don’t know where to begin. Or they just don’t care, which is the bad part.

CEM: I think people don’t realize that although it might not affect their generation, it will impact their children and grandchildren’s lives. They will have serious issues to contend with regarding water and air quality, amongst others. LAB: I think the average person doesn’t realize that it is so 94

easy to make a few small changes, getting into recycling, not using plastic, unplugging their appliances, etc. I love using my bike. I bike everywhere, and I don’t consciously think about it. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect everyone to start driving a hybrid, but there are day to day things you can do, like car-pooling or using your bike more. There’s a government responsibility too. In New Zealand, which is green, lush, gorgeous, and rich in natural resources, they are fighting the coal industry because they are wanting to mine in Coromandel, one of the most beautiful parts of the country. You see people getting involved, marching down the streets with signs saying, “No way. This is our coast, and this is our country. We don’t want big corporations here, raping and pillaging.” I admire that. They get behind it. I have to admittedly say that life in New Zealand is a lot slower though, so things don’t have to be about convenience to support the lifestyle. Here in America, it’s no excuse, to be honest. It doesn’t take much to chop your own vegetables instead of buying everything pre-packaged, and here the food just seems so plastic. I recently did a film with Sam Worthington and Xavier Samuel, Drift, in Margaret River, Australia which again is such a beautiful part of the world. They have pristine beaches, and I was introduced to the surfing culture which is a community that is very much in touch with nature. You see these famous athletes combing the beach with their boards, picking up rubbish. There is something very calming about paddling out and just hanging out in the ocean. Being part

communities it’s a matter of survival. A lot of those poachers get lured into it because they need to feed their families, and it is a lucrative business for them.

CEM: You’re obviously very passionate about the environment, but what other initiatives inspire you?

CEM: They get paid 10 times their monthly salary for one horn.

LAB: I think as someone who is a celebrity, known or perhaps someone that people might look up to, personally there are three initiatives that are important to me. Animals, the environment, and causes in South Africa. There are parts of my country that have issues, and I would gladly donate my time to raise awareness or funds. CEM: Speaking of, I hear you’re going to be an Ambassador for the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization? LAB: I would love to be an Ambassador, especially for the rhinos. I saw what happened at the Aquila Game Reserve and immediately emailed my Manager, asking her to find out how I could get involved and bring awareness to it. CEM: How is it that more people are not speaking about the illegall rhino poaching industry, and the immeninent threat facing their survival?

CEM: What are some of the ways you practice being ecoconscious in your daily life? LAB: Living green for me extends into my workouts as well. My Moksha Yoga class challenged us a few weeks ago, to go as green as we could for seven weeks. This meant everything from food (so eating less or no meat), buying locally, no plastic, biking to class if we could, etc. What I love about this form of exercise is that it slows me down, allows me to sweat out impurities both physically and mentally, and I leave there feeling like I’ve accomplished a wonderful sense of purpose for the day. Helps than I’m pretty bendy at the moment too! I can bend it! I also love being in nature working out, and do lots of hiking with my dog, Eli. We go running together.

Living green for me extends into my workouts as well. My Moksha Yoga class challenged us a few weeks ago, to go as green as we could for seven weeks.

LAB: Exactly. Again, coming from South Africa I have been on safari and seen rhinos up close and personal. I’ve seen lions and elephants, and I would hate to think of future generations not being able to experience that. It is an amazing thing, and Africa is an amazing country. The unfortunate problem is that it has been raped and pillaged by everyone all over the world, and now in local 98

LAB: Exactly. That’s the sad thing about Africa. A lot of the horrific things that happen, be it civil war or rhino poaching, are born out of a necessity to survive, and it takes global organizations such as the United Nations and environmental groups, to step in and assist.

CEM: And Eli’s a rescue? LAB: Yes, Eli is a rescue so he’s recycled too!

With that, Lesley-Ann hops on her bike with Eli in tow, and is off to yoga. Having already been seen on the small screen in shows such as Chuck, CSI: New York, Memphis Beat and Zombie Apocalypse, she is set to return to the big screen in Drift, slated for release in early 2013. She’s also just started working with Best Friends Animal Society and their new campaign, NKLA (No Kill LA). An engaging, bright and dedicated young woman who sees our future in our own hands, Lesley-Ann is hailing a sexy global call to action, as she passionately crusades to save Planet Earth, recycling one bottle at a time! www.lesley-annbrandt.com

Vanessa Marcil-Giovinazzo Emmy Award winning actress Vanessa Marcil- Giovinazzo, known for her role on General Hospital as well as other hot TV shows like Las Vegas has recently become a mom, which inspired her to launch a clothing line, Baby Gagoo. The line is a family affair; Vanessa is partnering with her sister, Sherry, and her husband, Carmine to put it all together. Gagoo is eco friendly from top to bottom, including organic fabrics, lowimpact dyes, and a built in give-back component. It was extremely important to Vanessa and her family that what they put out in the world not only had an immediate positive effect, but that the line’s plan included long-term goals in sustainable fashion for babies and kids. The charities Gagoo gives back too are close to Vanessa’s heart, and include Nkosi’s Haven in South Africa, whose mission is to offer holistic care and support for destitute HIV/AIDS infected mothers, children, and AIDS orphans (infected or not). Nkosi’s Haven is named after Nkosi Johnson, the young AIDS activist who passed away on International Children’s Day on June 1st 2001, who dearly wanted a facility that would care for both mother and child. The other charity that benefits is based in LA. Sojourn provides battered women and their children a safe space to regroup, rebuild, and reestablish their self-esteem and lives. The inspiration behind the line is not only thoughtful, but magical too. “Baby Gagoo comes from a magical place where the characters teach children to openly express feelings in a safe environment for specified amount time before they go along with ‘the plan of life” says Vanessa of her line. We can all use a magical place to look towards for a safer, happier, healthier planet. Check out Baby Gagoo and pay it forward as you shop.

She also worked with Al Gore as a host and correspondent for Current TV for a number of years. As a sports lover who does not sit on the sidelines, Angela plays volley ball, surfs, and dives, becoming a certified Eco-diver. She has traveled to over 40 countries and she’s witnessed first hand some of the world’s environmental impacts. Her latest endeavor is filming an independent documentary film, Plastic Paradise. Angela travels on a personal journey of discovery to uncover the mystery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in one of the most remote places on earth–Midway Atoll. Along the way she meets scientists, researchers, influencers, and volunteers who shed light on the effects of our rabid plastic consumption. But filmmaking is a whole different beast than reporting. The greatest challenge in this process has been the post- production as well as budget but she is grateful to have had so many wonderful talented people contribute to this project and ANGELA SUN those who keep contributing. Many of her close friends and even Angela’s family now understand more than ever their own waste consumption and the impact it causes. “The older generation is set in their ways, so the most rewarding experience is having my family tell me that because of this film, they are now much more aware of their plastic consumption and look at plastic differently.” Angela states. The most rewarding moment for Angela was the day she locked picture. “It was the culmination of so much blood, sweat, tears and personal funds throughout the years colliding to finish the final cut.“

SHERRI SHEPHERD A Daytime Emmy Award winning television personality, actress, comedienne and writer who even found time in her busy life with her son and husband to write a biography: Permission Slips - Every Woman’s Guide to Giving Herself a Break, Sherri Shepherd is a force. She also devotes some of that energy towards charity, including March of Dimes, and Generosity Water, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to ending the clean water crisis in developing countries, one community at a time. The organization utilizes nightlife and notable power in major cities to reach influencers and young adults to make a difference and raise awareness. Sherri co-hosted an event for Generosity Water in Los Angeles recently for much needed funds to build wells and create clean water for rural communities that lack it. Lack of water alone kills over 3.6 million people per year—more than war and AIDS combined. Sherri saw a video from the father and sun co-Founders (Phillip & Jordan Wagner) of Generosity Water about the well-building process and that made a huge impression on her. “I saw the smiles on those kids’ faces. We take water for granted, and what Generosity Water does is just so wonderful,” she said, noting that she conserves water at home and looks at ways in her own life to make shifts that can make a difference even in her day to day. During the event while others were pledging dollars to build wells she too shared how she had gotten involved not only by cohosting this important night but also donating her own funds to build more wells. Currently the group has funded over 350 water projects in 18 countries around the world (and growing). Drop by drop, all the good acts are building towards healthy water supplies to save lives.

CHRISTY TURLINGTON BURNS

To get involved or learn more log on to www. everymothercounts.org Christy Turlington Burns is Founder of Every Mother Counts, Director/Producer ‘No Woman, No Cry,’ a Global Maternal Health Advocate, mother and model – she is unstoppable. When Christy had her daughter a quick turn of events during the delivery inspired her to see firsthand what can be done to help other women who do not have the same access to quality care that she did. A first time director, Christy opens the film with footage from her own harrowing birth experience. About 1,000 deaths worldwide each day are attributed to bleeding after birth, also known as postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). No Woman, No Cry is a gripping documentary that tells the personal stories of pregnant women and their caregivers in four countries as they try to avoid adding to these troubling statistics. This is one of those underreported issues and most people probably haven’t heard of it. Every Mother Counts was founded in 2010 by Christy after she finished the film. Now in its second year, the group works as an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally. “With Every Mother Counts, I would say that each day is truly rewarding because day in and day out we advocate for access and equality. Maternal health is a human right and every mother 108

deserves the same access to quality healthcare.” Christy shares. Their mission is to educate the global public about the barriers too many woman face daily resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. Ninety percent are preventable and now believe that the more people who know these facts the more we can do together to put an end to them. Christy boldly stated, “The most disturbing thing about the issue is the underlying inequities that significantly impact women and their families. And here in the U.S. access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare is also on the line. This is an urgent yet solvable situation that women’s bodies are not to be played with and that lives are at stake.” Christy’s film was a true collaboration and she owes so much to the women who invited her into their lives during such an incredibly sacred event as giving birth. She wanted them to know that their stories are helping others to understand their constraints and that this will help to change things for so many others. In closing she shared, “I always encourage people to use their voices. If you have a voice, use it, because there are millions around the world who don’t have that freedom.”

These eight outstanding men have captured the true essence of the contemporary Jet Setter. Inspired by a love of humanity, they create innovations that advance society via concepts as diverse as space tourism and true global healthcare, to protecting our beautiful and fragile earth. In assembling this wonderful group of men, we continuously found ourselves inspired by their dedication to life and the fashion in which it is optioned to us all. Join us by land, sea and air as we take a closer look at Coco Eco’s Jet Set. SIR RICHARD BRANSON It is an absolute must to begin with Sir Richard Branson in our salute to the most dashing, daring and innovative gentlemen that we have the honor to know. He is the very definition of a Jet Setter; famous for his Virgin Group of over 400 companies including Virgin Records, Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, and Virgin Galactic. What stands out most to Coco Eco is that throughout his career, Branson has sought to conduct business in an altruistically avantgarde manner. In late June, Sir Richard joined dozens of celebrities such as Paul McCartney, Penelope Cruz, Robert Redford, Javier Bardem and Pedro Almodovar at Rio de Janeiro’s ‘Rio Earth Summit’, to launch a bid for a global sanctuary in the Arctic. By signing their names on an Arctic Scroll, they have symbolically ignited an effort by Greenpeace that demands oil drilling and industrial fishing to be banned from the North Pole and Arctic waters. Currently, the huge expanse around the pole belongs to all of us because it’s defined in international law as the high seas, and underneath it is the deep seabed which is the common heritage of all mankind. But as temperatures rise

and the ice melts the Arctic states are making territorial claims on the seabed so they can open the door to the oil giants. Without these disturbances, the region is already vulnerable to climate change with the polar ice cap shrinking by 9 percent each decade. Branson has signed on to help spread the word in deterring plans to begin drilling in the region this summer. Branson has also issued a very public call for Rhino Cruelty Action. Through his work with the group WildAid, significant effort has been made in regions where rhino horn attracts overzealous poachers who can move them on the black market at high prices. As a result, more than 90% of our rhinos have been lost in the past 40 years. Through public awareness and education people can learn about the illegal procedure of rhino poaching and help dismantle black market demands. “WildAid has created PSAs featuring leading Asian figures in sports, entertainment, and business to generate social pressure against rhino horn consumption. Particular attention is paid to developing government support for the campaign. Also, Peabody-Award winning director Deborah Scranton has worked on a feature-length documentary about the rhino poaching crisis, as seen through the eyes of China’s biggest star (and long-time WildAid Ambassador) Yao Ming,” says Branson. He added, “The group has previously conducted similar public awareness campaigns in China, using star power from Chinese celebrities such as Yao Ming and Jackie Chan to educate the public about shark finning, tiger poaching, and other devastating effects of the unsustainable wildlife trade. ‘When the buying stops, the killing can too’ is their campaign slogan – and absolutely true.”

MATT GOULD AND GRIFFIN MATTHEWS Activists. Artists. Allies. Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews formed a friendship that grew into an impactful and inspiring partnership. Creators and authors of the play “Witness Uganda”, the dynamic duo has received two ASCAP awards among others, and honors such as a Disney/ASCAP workshop with “Wicked” composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz. The idea began when Griffin visited Uganda in 2005 as a volunteer. Learning that education in this country was neither free nor accessible to the masses, he met a group of poverty stricken teenagers who lost their parents to the AIDS virus. Griffin instantly became their mentor and sponsor, promising to continue sending money for their progress and education. Unfortunately, in 2008 Griffin’s fundraising efforts seemed hopeless. Matt encouraged Griffin to take a trip away from the stress, and recorded Griffin venting his frustrations. Later adding music, he created the first song of their play. Witness Uganda started as a 20-minute pitch to nonprofits for funding, but the play continued to grow as more people embraced the experience and identified with the story. Matt believed, “people will look to the arts as a means of inspiration, self analysis, and change…a Broadway musical can be about a cause.” Their biggest accomplishment is watching the Uganda Project students graduating from high school, with four now in college. “The show sparks conversation. A movement. A shift in our attitudes about our responsibility to our fellow human beings both here and abroad,” says Griffin. Receiving the Richard Rogers Award from American Academy of Arts and Letters for Up and Coming Music Theatre Team, “Witness Uganda” will be read at a major non-profit theatre in NYC. Both are currently writing, and preparing for a highly anticipated concert in Los Angeles later this summer.

PHILLIP & JORDAN WAGNER Nearly 1 billion people on our earth lack access to clean water. Former entrepreneur Jordan Wagner is CEO of the non-profit organization Generosity Water, and works alongside his father Phillip Wagner. Phillip started this organization through his work as the founding pastor of Oasis Church, based in Los Angeles. After travelling throughout Africa and becoming increasingly concerned with the alarming status quo, Jordan joined this very important cause, making it a family affair. Starting as a grassroots effort, Generosity Water has seen massive expansion and now aids those lacking this precious resource worldwide. The organization identifies villages in need, and works with locals to build wells and cisterns to bring fresh water to these communities. Donations are used to bring this opportunity for health, life, and a natural resource with which to flourish. “We have now funded nearly 400 wells in 18 different countries serving over 250,000 people with access to clean water,” reported Jordan. “As we move forward, we are going to focus our efforts in Haiti, Ethiopia, and Ghana with the possibility of adding another country in the next year.” In late Spring 2012, E!’s Jason Kennedy and The View’s Sherri Shepherd hosted the ‘4th Annual Night of Generosity’ gala at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. Kennedy has hosted this star studded event each year, and has been passionate about supporting Generosity Water. Jordan has also produced a new documentary film “La Source”, which is narrated by actor Don Cheadle. Says Jordan, “It’s an honor to work alongside my father and to learn from his leadership, wisdom, and experience. He is one of the most compassionate people I know and Generosity Water would not be where it is today without his genuine heart for people and his vision to see change happen in their lives.” Phillip & Jordan Wagner, Photo Credits: Generosity Water

Dr. Tarnay and his colleagues travel regularly to Mbarra, Uganda to work with expecting mothers and women who lack prenatal care and healthcare, which are the result of poverty, limited educational opportunities and lack of outlying health care infrastructure.

“Most people do not realize the scope of the problem, that women are dying during labor and sustaining debilitating injuries like fistula by the thousands. Only when countries begin to recognize and acknowledge this huge health and social blight on how girls and women are treated will real change occur. “

GEORGE WHITESIDES George Whitesides is CEO and President of Virgin Galactic, the spaceflight company founded by Sir Richard Branson. Whitesides previously served as Chief of Staff for NASA, where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the highest award the agency confers. With Scaled Composites, the company has developed the WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo vehicles, based on the X Prize-winning SpaceShipOne. Scaled expects to begin rocketpowered flights under the recently issued experimental permit toward the end of the year. Depending on a variety of internal and external conditions, Virgin Galactic is planning to begin commercial operations late in 2013. Whitesides explained the process: “Flight time will be approximately two hours from takeoff to landing. At 50,000 feet, WhiteKnightTwo will release SpaceShipTwo for a thrilling Mach 3.5 rocket ride away from the earth’s surface to about 150,000 feet. Once in space, SpaceShipTwo passengers will have several minutes of out-of-seat weightlessness before returning to Earth.” Virgin Galactic is a unique, clean-tech project that has as its mission the transformation in safety, cost and environmental impact of access to space for private individuals and scientific research. Their willingness to invest and to take risk is already pushing the pace of change where government agencies and traditional industry have stalled. In achieving its mission, Virgin Galactic will also act as a test-bed for new and clean technologies,

such as the use of carbon composites in large aircraft, which have applications across a range of industrial sectors. “We believe that sending thousands and eventually millions of people into space will have a profound impact on planet Earth. Those who fly with us will come home sharing a view of the world that only very few have had before, developing a greater understanding of the fragility of our world and our position in the universe.”

CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON

Paul Watson, Photo Credits: Barbara Veiga/Sea Shepherd

After completing over 225 ocean expeditions, Captain Paul Watson upholds his honor and name as Time Magazine’s ‘Hero of the Planet’. He is Commander of the flagship Steve Irwin for Sea Shepherd, an organization that works to expose and end illegal activity in the ocean, for the survival of seals, sharks, whales, dolphins, and other sea creatures. Two Sea Shepherd boats, the M/Y Bob Barker and Brigitte Bardot sailed into Sydney, Australia on June 12th, receiving a hero’s welcome in preventing the slaughter of 768 whales from a Japanese whaling fleet. Sea Shepherd also handed over their Automatic Identification System to the Galapagos National Park Service, with enough continued support to track illegal vessel movement for years to come. While filming one of his expeditions back in 2002, Watson stopped a group of poachers from shark finning. Although he had the permission of the Guatemalan government, Interpol dismissed Costa Rica’s extradition order, and Germany acted on the warrant. Watson was arrested this past May, a full decade later. Watson responded, “This is a political issue…Money talks big in Costa Rica and sharks don`t vote.” On May 23, 2012, a huge campaign launched worldwide called “S.O.S. Save Our Skipper,” protesting the Honorable German Ministers, embassy, and consulates. Supported by celebrities like John Paul DeJoria, Pam Anderson, Richard Dean Anderson, Bob Barker, and Perrey Reeves, Watson was released eight days later on bail. The President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, is meeting with the Chancellor Merkel in Berlin. Hopefully with her full support, Germany will clear Watson of these charges. Watson immediately returned to his ship, and says, “If the whales survive and flourish, if the seals continue to live and give birth, and if I can contribute to continuing their future prosperity, I will be forever happy.”

SIMON TATUM With major box office hits like “Corpse Bride” and “Harry Potter” on his resume, multi-award winning filmmaker Simon Tatum walked away from Hollywood to pursue projects with a deeper personal connection and cultural impact. A London native, Tatum finds inspiration from day to day life encounters and observations. He is most fascinated by “…outsiders and people living on the fringes of society,” says Tatum. His film “Into the Jungle,” was his first project addressing environmental issues in the world. Visiting the Ecuadorean Amazon, his crew met and observed the indigenous Cofan tribe. The tribe is currently suing Chevron in a monumental court case, regarding the toxic waste residue that remains in their jungle, their home. The river serves as the major source of life to this tribe, “…and because of reckless, greedy oil companies, it’s destroying them” Tatum explains. He now has a profound appreciation of life from the experience in the Amazon, and discovering thousands of years of an existence in which the world is unacquainted. Tatum’s most recent project “Damn Right, Rebel Proud,” is a documentary based on the story of Hank Williams III. Known as the last true rebel outlaw and the grandson of country legend Hank Williams, this story is important to Tatum in honoring the American south and its lost traditions. His passion for this film was inspired by the rich music and background of the south. Believing that mass consumption from a corporate mentality is diminishing the history, Tatum wanted “to capture that culture before it’s too late.” Approaching each project and story with compassion, Tatum hopes to change people’s misapprehensions, and convey what it truly means to be human in any real life situation and circumstance.

LAWRENCE ANTHONY A Special Tribute, by Anna Griffin No Men We Love Jet Set Issue would be complete without a posthumous tribute to the late, great, global conservationist Lawrence Anthony, who passed away in March of this year. A renowned environmentalist and bestselling author, Lawrence fearlessly fought for the protection of wildlife, including leading the charge to save the creatures abandoned in Saddam Hussein’s Baghdad Zoo during the 2003 US-led Coalition invasion of Iraq. He also rehabilitated seven rogue elephants as their last hope of survival in 1999. It was to his home, Thula Thula, that he brought Nana and the herd, forging a deep bond that inspired his book “The Elephant Whisperer,” which established him as a passionate and respected wildlife advocate throughout the world. In addition to building a private game reserve and rehabilitation center at Thula Thula, he also gained notoriety as a conservationist committed to creating innovative programs Lawrence Anthony, Photo Credits: that involved remote African tribes invested Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization in their own traditional land, an activity he considered essential to the future well being of conservation in Africa. Prior to his death, his last passion was raising awareness of the illegal rhino poaching trade that is threatening to wipe out the remaining rhino population of South Africa. His book, “The Last Rhino: My Battle to Save one of the World’s Greatest Creatures” which was published after his passing, details his crusade to raise awareness, (including his nail-biting negotiations with the infamous Lord’s Resistance Army in Southern Sudan) to protect this endangered species. As the last journalist to go into the bush with him, Lawrence deeply impacted me. From watching him and his team try to rescue a sick juvenile zebra, to spending time with him hanging out in his Land Rover with seven-ton rogue elephant Marbula standing by, I personally experienced this man’s undeniable charisma not just within the animal kingdom, but also with people too. His passion and authenticity were legendary, and to say his passing is a loss is an understatement, such was the depth and genuine understanding of this gentle giant of the natural world around him. His mission was clearly to define a new way of thinking in relation to conservation and our planet, best summarized in one of his most famous quotes, “I have never understood the saying ‘To think outside the box.’ Why would anyone sit inside of a box and then think outside of it? Rather, just get out of the box.” Having just received his honorary doctorate posthumously from the University of KwaZulu Natal, Lawrence’s vision continues through the work of his non-profit, the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization, and at his beloved home Thula Thula Private Game Reserve.

THULA THULA’S ELEPHANT FAMILY

It’s 5 am and I can’t sleep. As the bush outside awakens, I hear it come to life and am excited for another day in paradise. I sit on the porch of my lodge watching the sunrise over the African savanna, as bats retreat in a frenzy and night turns to day. Over 350 species of birds herald a chorus beyond my terrace as the animal kingdom stirs and the bush orchestra amplifies in a vibrant crescendo. Thula Thula is a magical destination, an exotic oasis brimming with life and a stunning reminder of the beauty and order of our natural world. The beloved home of the late conservationist Lawrence Anthony, Thula Thula literally translates as peace and tranquility, and sits in the lush rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal, a two hour drive from Durban, South Africa. This is

a special place, not just because of its immense beauty, Five Star accommodations, or the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see exotic, endangered species in their natural habitat. These 5,000 pristine hectares set the stage for the creation of the Zulu Nation at the Nseleni River, and it is the oldest private game reserve in the region. The ancestral hunting ground of the legendary Zulu King Shaka, it was to Thula Thula that Lawrence brought seven rogue elephants in 1999, rehabilitating them as their last hope for survival, and forging a deep bond that inspired his book “The Elephant Whisperer.” This stunning private reserve is home to myriad indigenous rehabilitated wildlife including white rhinos, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, zebras, leopards, monkeys, impalas, hyenas and wildebeests, and as anyone who has ever been on safari will tell you, it is an inspiring experience to be in the presence of these creatures. As soon as we arrive and despite an almost 30 hour journey from Los Angeles, we head straight into the bush on an evening game drive with our phenomenal trackers, Promise and Victor. Encountering zebras, giraffes, and impalas within hours of arriving in South Africa is surreal, but sundowner drinks standing on what feels like the top of the world takes my breath away. After a cold beer and some snacks Victor and Promise have us back in the Land Rover on a mission to track down the elephants before dark. It’s not as easy as you might think considering the size of these beasts, and it is a chance encounter with the herd on their hunt for water that brings us face to face. To say that being charged by a seven-ton elephant (who is thirsty and aggravated) is exhilarating is an understatement, but thanks to Promise’s deft maneuvers, we are reversing down the track at a rate of knots, and the elephants get

to the dam with no harm done. Once back on the road, there’s one more stop-off before reaching Safari Lodge, and a quick yet intimate meeting with their white rhinos Ntombi and Thabo, before dinner. Beyond the beauty and tranquility of this private game reserve and wildlife sanctuary, is a 360-degree approach to sustainability and conservation. The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization as founded by Lawrence, provides spectacular Eco Safaris for small groups to Thula Thula, helping to fund important conservation work, as well as other initiatives such as recycling and educational programs in local schools. One of the special opt-in excursions offered on an Eco Safari is a visit to the neighboring village of Buchanana, to volunteer at a children’s pre-school, which I would highly recommend. To meet these beautiful, affectionate and inquisitive children, most of who are orphaned and eat only one meal a day as provided by the Anthony family, has a profound impact that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Also on the activity list, a not-to-be-missed visit to the local Witch Doctor who rumor has it is never wrong. The jury’s still out on my reading, but watching this man perform his ritual is an experience I’ll not soon forget, and I’m still hoping he’s right about my future! Aside from the twice-daily bush drives, other activities available whilst in residence at Thula Thula include 126

mountain biking, bush walks, yoga retreats, and a culinary experience which is a delight to the senses. Cordon Bleu-trained chef Francoise Anthony fuses her French heritage with Zulu cuisine, designing a menu inspired by local products with a Parisian twist. Some of my favorites include the divine three cheese and pesto feuilleté on tomato compote, the piquant grilled calamari peri peri on olive polenta, and refreshing sorbet granité made with fresh mango, pineapple, and red berries, all not to be missed. If dining al fresco under the stars at Safari Lodge isn’t your thing, then perhaps a traditional braai in an enclosed corral is more your speed. Cooking out in the bush surrounded by wildlife is an adventure, combining cast-iron pot cooking, barbecue and if you’re really lucky, accompanied by a Zulu lullaby sweetly sung around the campfire.

Whatever your preferred accommodation, it is available at Thula Thula. From luxury-appointed lodges overlooking the reserve, to the Luxury Tent Camp where private outdoor showering is a morning ritual, you will find it here. And with two swimming pools and plenty of hammocks, there is ample space to chill and take it all in, if your busy safari schedule allows. With the illegal rhino poaching industry on the rise and the local species facing increasing threats to their survival, Thula Thula employs a team comprised of people from the local community in an effort to empower them and assist them in sustaining their daily lives. It’s a system that’s obviously working, as their warm and welcoming staff soulfully enhances my stay, guaranteeing me the most magical experience of a lifetime.

Costa Rica has emerged as the prime eco-tourism destination in Central America, due to the country’s extensive system of national parks and nature reserves. In Costa Rica you can find both the most biodiverse place on the planet as well as the world’s happiest people. Pura Vida, which means something like pure life, is the country’s unofficial slogan and is used everywhere as a greeting. An early pioneer of sustainable travel, Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s top ecologically conscious hotels and resorts — all working toward preserving the gorgeous nature that keeps drawing visitors here year after year. This is a country that truly understands the meaning of the word sustainability. When planning a visit it’s important to know that Costa Rica has two distinct seasons — the dry season runs from late December to mid-April and is the best time to visit. During the green, or rainy, season the landscape grows rich and lush but some places become inaccessible because roads are wiped out by flooding. I visited for two weeks at the beginning of March, and decided to split my time there between the Osa Peninsula in the southwest, home to Corcovado National Park — home to more species per square meter than any other place on the planet; Montezuma, a small bohemian village nestled between the ocean and the sea and near a spectacular waterfall swimming hole; and the Mal Pais area on the Nicoya Peninsula, a popular destination for surfers and the international gypset. When visiting Costa Rica, one can truly leave all stress and work-related worry behind to just relax and live in the present.

Located at the southwest Pacific side of the Osa Peninsula, El Remanso is an eco-lodge with a capacity of thirty-five people. The resort is situated on a spectacular piece of land, acquired by a Spanish Greenpeace activist couple back in the 80s, and is now run by their daughter and her husband. Thanks to solar panels and hydropower generated from on-site waterfalls and streams, the entire resort is completely off the grid. Fresh water springs on the property also provide water and many of the structures are built from wood that was cleared when the resort was built (the rest is certified fallen wood, sourced locally from the Osa Peninsula). The cabins are all beautifully nestled into the pristine rainforest setting, on top of a hill that slopes down toward the beach, which means you have a full view of the canopy. There are no doors, just large sliding screens that you may or may not want to leave open during the night. The sounds of the rainforest wildlife entice you to go for a hike on one of the many trails, some of which lead you to spectacular waterfalls. Seasoned guides are available on the property, and will take you to see many different species of monkeys, exotic birds like toucans and scarlet macaw, blue morpho butterflies, golden orb spiders, and maybe a sloth, puma or ocelot — this is, after all, one of the world’s most pristine and biodiverse rainforests. Once the sun sets (a beautiful explosion of yellows and oranges, seen perfectly from our porch, through a natural clearing among the trees), the sounds all completely change and cicadas, frogs and howler monkeys will lull you to sleep. Hike along a trail down the hill and you will come to a gorgeous secluded beach, where you can walk for hours without seeing another person. The currents in the ocean are very strong here, but you can swim in tide pools or a beautiful lagoon. All meals (which are included in the price of a room) are prepared on site, using local produce, and served in a bamboo structure with great views of the forest canyon. There was always at least one vegetarian choice, and the warm and friendly staff were more than happy to accommodate special diets. Over 80% of the resort’s total waste (not just food) is composted.

MONTEZUMA Nature Lodge

STAY

Most people who come to Montezuma will stay in a hostel right in town, but if you want to get away from it all and indulge in some serenity, Nature Lodge is the perfect choice. Perched on a hill, a five to ten minute ride from the town, this small, charming hotel is an oasis of tranquility — a perfect place to relax. Formerly a horse ranch, Nature Lodge is still known by the locals as Finca Los Caballos, something that is good to keep in mind when giving directions to taxi drivers. Horseback riding excursions through the nature reserve are offered every day and can be tailored to fit any need. There is a wellness spa that offers massages, facials and other beauty treatments, but for many simply laying by the blue pool adorned with a lotus flower, buddha statue and amazing view of the treetops below may provide enough serenity and peace of mind. A healthy breakfast, featuring lots of fresh fruit, is included in the price. Lunch and dinner are available by reservation.

EAT

This restaurant and hotel in the heart of Montezuma is affiliated with the high-end Ylang Ylang Beach Resort located a few minutes down the beach. Prices are at U.S. levels, but you’ll find a large menu with many vegetarian and vegan options that are clearly labeled. There are traditional Costa Rican dishes as well as Mexican and Asian-inspired ones. I opted for a plate of vegan summer rolls, which turned out to be everyone at the table’s favorite thing. There are also plenty of delicious juices, smoothies, teas and lemonades to cool you down. There is outdoor seating in the back or on the front porch. The portions are huge and suitable for sharing — after we couldn’t finish our meal, the server fed the leftovers to a homeless dog that the restaurant owners had decided to take care of.

SHOP

One does not visit Costa Rica for the shopping, and I would not recommend wasting your time in this beautiful country by visiting a shopping mall. You can find great locally made jewelry and crafts, especially in Montezuma, where independent vendors have set up tables all along the street. Gorgeously colored hammocks are everywhere in Costa Rica, and once you’ve found bliss rocking slowly from side to side in one of these you’ll definitely want to bring one home. Study the labels to make sure you find one that is actually made locally.

INDULGE Most hotels and resorts in Costa Rica offer massages and spa services. Prices are pretty much the same as in the U.S. but, for the sake of relaxation and rejuvenation, it’s totally worth indulging. 134

Santa Teresa/Mal Pais Disfrutalo Ranchos y Villas

STAY

The Mal Pais area is very laid-back when it comes to accommodations — it’s all about simple bungalows. Disfrutalo is a new resort that includes 4 bungalows and 4 villas, all built from local teak wood. Even though it’s located right off the main (dirt) road in Santa Teresa, the lush vegetation makes it seem more like it would be in the middle of the rainforest. The beach is only about 250 feet away, literally on the other side of the street. The villas and bungalows are all equipped with kitchens, so you could cook a meal — or make great tropical fruit smoothies — at home if you wanted. Outdoor showers and hammocks on the patio make it very difficult to do anything but relax here, but if you want to enjoy the nightlife all you have do to is take a ten-minute walk along the main road and you’re there.

STAY

A bit further north in Santa Teresa is Latitude 10, a private beach retreat suitable for those who like a higher level of luxury. Small private casitas are arranged beautifully in the property so that you can enjoy a feeling of privacy with the full service of a hotel. Built on natural gardens, the resort was created around the principles of sustainability and protection of the surrounding wildlife and nature. No trees were cut down to build Latitude 10 and hotel guides will happily walk you through the hotel’s sustainable initiatives if you are interested in hearing more. Borrow one of the complimentary bikes, and you can get to Santa Teresa in minutes. During the dry season, the roads here get very dusty so it may be a good idea to tie a scarf over your mouth to avoid breathing in that road dust.

Tranquilo Backpackers

STAY

If you are traveling on a serious budget the good news is that hostels can be found almost everywhere in Costa Rica, and they are very affordable. Tranquilo is nestled in the heart of Santa Teresa, one block from the beach. The rooms are situated along hammock-lined balconies and are surprisingly clean. There are your classic dorms for $11 per night but, if sleeping with strangers is just not your thing, doubles with private bathrooms are $35 per night — a great deal in the Mal Pais area. If you are not in your late twenties to early thirties chances are you will be the oldest person on the property besides the nightly security guard, but that’s fine. There is a strict silence policy that takes effect at 11pm, so you won’t be kept away by rowdy backpackers, unless you want to be, that is.

Bird Watching You may not think of bird watching as an active pursuit, but tell that to those who are up before dawn every day, hiking deep into the rainforest just to catch that one magic glimpse of a rare bird. For many, bird watching is the main reason to visit Costa Rica, because there is such a rich diversity of different species. While you are here, why not give it a try? Most resorts and nature preserves have seasoned guides that can help you discover the beauty hiding up there in the canopy.

Because of the warm waters and consistent waves, Costa Rica is a great place to learn surfing.

Surfing The second thing that really put Costa Rica on the tourist map is surfing. The water is warm and although you can find some really great breaks here it never gets crowded. If you’re really serious about learning, there are many surf camps in the Mal Pais area. You can also rent a board or take an hourly lesson. I got my very first surf lesson from Jobbie, a Canadian surfer and bon vivant who runs Jobbie’s Longboards in Mal Pais and also has surf and yoga camps. Although it was harder than I thought, I managed to stand up on my, like, third try.

Horseback Riding

Wherever there is a tree canopy in Costa Rica you can find canopy tours, which is basically a series of zip lines that enable you to glide through the rainforest jungle and observe wildlife right next to you in the canopy and far below. Canopy del Pacifico’s zipline course is located right outside Mal Pais, right at the entrance of the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, the oldest protected area in Costa Rica. The canopy ride has 9 cables — the longest one a thousand feet long — and 11 platforms, between 17 to 80 feet high, set high in the gigantic trees. It’s a fun, adrenaline-filled experience you will not forget.

Most well-traveled destinations in Costa Rica offer horseback riding adventures. In Montezuma, El Pinto Horseback Riding Expeditions will take you on a four-hour tour through seven beautiful beaches and shady jungle trails, ending up at a waterfall where you can take a dip in the freshwater river pool below the falls. No previous riding experience is necessary and start times of tours are dependent on the tides and season. The guide, Marvin, speaks English (which is good for beginners) and has a lifetime of experience with horses and Costa Rican nature.

GET AROUND

BY Bus Costa Rica has the best bus system in Central America, and it’s by far the cheapest way to travel. Tickets should be reserved in advance, especially during the high season. The downside to traveling by bus is that it takes a long time, because of the bad condition of the roads and the frequent stops made. Interbus and Grayline are the two largest bus companies and both offset 100% of their carbon emissions.

interbusonline.com & graylinecostarica.com

By Domestic Air There is so much to do in Costa Rica, and if you are short on time it’s definitely worth taking a domestic flight to save time. There are two main airlines — Sansa and Nature Air — both have daily flights to most parts of the country and offset all their carbon emissions making donations to rainforest preservation efforts.

flysansa.com & natureair.com

By Boat To get to the Nicoya Peninsula, the best way is to take a daily speedboat from Herradura Beach, just north of Jaco. It departs every day at 10:45 and costs $40 per person. It can be a rough ride, so if you’re prone to seasickness, take a pill or make sure to stare at the horizon the entire way.

zumatours.net

By Car Renting a car is a possibility, but one thing to keep in mind is that the roads are dusty, unpaved and in pretty bad condition in most places. Four-wheel drive is needed to go many places and you may have to traverse some streams to get where you are going. Most major American car rental agencies serve Costa Rica.

By Taxi Taxis in Costa Rica are red and have a triangular yellow mark on the side or the top. They can be found in most places and are a great alternative to renting a car. Just avoid the Taxi Piratas, and make sure you agree on the fare beforehand. The Osa Peninsula has miles of pristine beaches, nestled between blue ocean and vibrant rainforest.

WE ARE MADE OF

WATER Why Defending Our Oceans, Rivers and Lakes Is Saving Ourselves WRITTEN by: STARRE VARTAN

We’ve all heard the statistic that we are 60% water, and it’s an amazing thing to imagine; as we move around the world, over half of us is necessarily H2O, which keeps our blood flowing, our kidneys and liver processing toxins, and our brain synapses communicating their millions of messages a day. (The brain itself is 70% water.) Like our brain, the Earth’s surface is covered by 70% water, mostly in the form of our beautiful oceans; only 3% of all water is the fresh kind that we need to survive. Yet not only are our fresh water resources threatened by pollution, but due to human-caused climate change, hot and dry ecosystems are getting hotter and drier, and wet places are seeing deluges more often, all of which further strains water resources. Despite the facts – that we are made of water, and that it is an ever-more polluted and precious resource, many of us don’t even know where our water 144

comes from, or where our watersheds are. Do you? If you don’t, pull that atlas off your shelf, or easier yet, Google your town or city’s name and ‘watershed’ – geologists or county officials have this information available to the public. You’ll probably be fascinated by what you find – both where your water comes from, where it goes, and how interconnected the systems are. For instance, I live on the Connecticut shoreline, and so my nearest big body of water is, of course, the Long Island Sound. But my watershed – where the water I drink, bathe, and cook in – as well as water my veggie garden (sparingly!) comes from, starts in small springs in towns near the New York border, gradually accumulating into streams, and then the Norwalk River, which feeds into the Sound (and provides nutrients to oyster beds on its way out). That means that whatever pesticides and herbicides are used on lawns, gardens and farms, and whatever else the people do in my watershed dump down their drains eventually affects me. Getting to know where your water comes from immediately connects you to all those people who live up- and down-river from your home, and also helps you to understand how natural systems work together. But, you say, my water gets filtered and treated by my town, so I don’t have to worry about it. Yes, water filtration is effective in some ways, but it’s not enough, and prevention is more important. Some interesting facts: Recent research suggests that SSRI’s

and other psychoactive drugs found in the low doses commonly found in waterways can create autism-like reactions in susceptible river fish (those that have a genetic predisposition to it). Other studies have found that estrogen and other hormones, as well as industrial chemicals that act like hormones, pass through most water filtration systems into the water we drink, and might be behind higher incidences of reproductive issues, cancers and other health problems. Because these drugs and chemicals have been in our water supplies for relatively short time periods and are not well studied in the context of highly diluted concentrations, we don’t really know what effect they might have on our health. But we do know that in some circumstances, the fact that they are mixing together might mean they have a greater impact on our bodies than each compound would alone. And even when these chemicals are tested, they are never tested in tandem with other substances. The Precautionary Principle is the idea that in the cases where we don’t know the impact of our actions, or of chemicals and substances, or whatever is in question, that we should err on the side of caution. Unfortunately, government regulations work the other way – something has to be proven to be harmful- which is often difficult to do and takes time (think about the 30 years it took to ‘prove’ that smoking causes cancer) before it is outlawed or regulated. So solving some of our problems comes down to individual action and education. 145

STARRE VARTAN

Where can you start, if you want to protect our waterways – and the health of you and your family? As Susan Rockefeller’s gorgeous and informative recent documentary film, all about the global ocean crisis “Mission of Mermaids” suggests, there are several ways you can have a direct impact on ocean health. Refuse single use plastics. That includes water bottles, plastic bags, and disposable cutlery. Bringing your own reusable versions of all these things is easy. Buy sustainable seafood and fish. Keep a pocket guide with you when shopping, or better yet, ask your fishmonger where your food is coming from. Whole Foods’ fish counter has a comprehensive fish and seafood rating system, as well as strict policies in place for what they do buy. Some good ways to protect fresh water resources include: Don’t flush prescription medications down the toilet – those meds will end up dissolved in our waterways. Throw them in the trash instead.

Remember, everything that you flush down the toilet, or wash down that drain goes into our streams, lakes and oceans, and becomes the water we drink and goes into the bodies of the animals and fish we eat.

SUSTAINABLE

ARCHITECTURE

MADE EASY WRITTEN by: NICHOLA ZED

Sustainable design has dominated the global building industry for the last century as the modern world becomes more aware of the impact that our daily consumption has on the environment. What has evolved has been breathtaking, seductive and above all, healthy! Since the world has become more aware of what effects our industrial developments have had on our natural resources there is an enormous amount of information about what we can do to sustain our planet. We may not realize it but the most resourceful way to save the environment is through what we do within the buildings that provide us shelter: Our work places and homes which include some of our most significant impacts. Lend Lease, one of the world’s leading property and infrastructure solutions providers employs Jessica Lisle, a project planner, who explains that her favorite sustainability schemes can be broken down into three categories; design of your development, design of your home and in home inclusions. The simplest way to change, is the latter category. Lisle advises to work with the layout of your home by being mindful of where your living space is in relation to the daily sunlight. Utilizing this natural heat source can be achieved by specific placement of windows 148

to warm a home and office. It is also very important to be able to block solar energy during the summer through use of eaves.

Environmental design guru Sydney Tone Wheeler is a principal architect at Environa Studio explained in a recent article in Artichoke - an interior and Lisle also explains that using green materials such as architectural design magazine - that “less eco friendly concrete or sustainable timber (look for is more” in green designs. a hammer” means reduced waste and easier replacement. Everything from reducing manufacturing, transportation, installation, maintenance, and waste and increasing durability and ensuring recyclability are ways of building green. Using recycled, not downcycled, materials is a must. If you are building your own design, both Lisle and Wheeler explain that using the natural geography and weather instead of air conditioning is always favourable. 226 Adelaide Terrace in Perth, Western Australia, is a seven-storey office building and a great example of sustainable design. This Wood and Grieves’ Engineers interior project included fitting out the ground floor reception and level 3 of the building, the overall project’s Ecological Sustainable Development (ESD) initiatives were to improve building services performance and energy efficiency. A huge indoor environmental quality list was created, starting with improving natural light within the working environment (therefore unnecessary office partitioning was minimized). This also allowed occupants access to an external view, which has been shown in 150

studies to reduce eyestrain. Low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) carpets, paints, adhesives and sealants were used to reduce the detrimental impacts these chemicals can have on the health of occupants and also reduces exhaust pollutants to the environment. Further, over 60% of the construction waste was recycled. This type of building is now classified as having a Green Star Rating in Australia - -and if this can become a required component of any new building, imagine the positive effect on the environment. Reducing waste, reusing materials and recycling are all paramount practices for the world’s building future. How we use energy in our offices and homes have massive effects on the global warming and its future severity. Lets use the green designs as innovative means to improve the way we live and aid our sacred planet. A healthy living and working environment are an important step to help us survive our chaotic world and give back to Mother Nature. Sustainable living is truly where ethics and design go hand in hand.

The Caribbean International Architecture and Design Showcase 2012 WRITTEN BY: Jodie Dalmeda PHOTOGRAPHY: As Noted

The Caribbean Islands are mainly known for their beautiful sandy beaches, clear blue waters and warm climate, however this summer sees them bringing their own brand of sustainable architecture and design to London. Three award winning Caribbean architects, Amonle Studio Workshop, COCOA and Talma Mill Studios Ltd will be showing how they are leading the way in innovation and sustainability at the British Council’s International Architecture and Design Showcase 2012. The showcase is being staged at Ambika P3, The University of Westminster, London, during July 2012. Also exhibiting are Namibia, Serbia, South Africa, and Taiwan. The Caribbean architects are partnering with the Caribbean Development Agency as part of ENGAGE LONDON - a series of events being held in London during the 2012 Olympics, highlighting the creative industries across the region. The Caribbean theme for the showcase, Doors: Entryways to Sustainable Living, is presented through a virtual platform, which focuses on green and low cost housing solutions for the region. They look at how buildings, using local sustainable material, can Amonle - http://amonle.com COCOA - http://www.cocoa.gd Tamla - http://talmamillstudios.com

be used to create a stylish, yet disaster proof home. The proposed disaster proof home, Antillean Gothic, is designed by John Allsopp of Amonle Studio Workshop, which is based in Barbados. It has its origins in the type of dwelling commonly know as a ‘shotgun house’, which can be traced back to the American South and West Africa. This impressive structure’s principle building material is bamboo, grown and processed locally. Other eco considerations include the use of natural light, ventilation and drums, which collect water for washing, cleaning and irrigation. There is a proposed vertical axis wind turbine, which could generate 7,500kWh per year. John Allsopp was responsible for the critically acclaimed renovation of the Dockmasters House, a listed building at West India Quay, in London’s Docklands. It boasts the largest glass structure in the UK without any metal parts. The animated interiors of various rooms of homes being shown in 3D bring to life and demonstrate unique solutions to everyday building and landscape planning problems. It features design concepts which make use of the uniqueness of the region’s material and weather.

Exhib ‘Villa B’ is the work of COCOA (Caribbean Office of Co-Operative Architecture). COCOA is run by cousins Bryan and Trevor Bullen who have worked in Europe, Canada, and the US. The key environmental considerations for ‘Villa B’ are the use of solar and wind energy, passive cooling through the introduction of large ponds and swimming pools and locally farmed timber.

Landscape designers Talma Mill Studios, are revolutionising the Caribbean with their ideas of “green infrastructure”. The lush garden on display is a tapestry of layered landscape systems. The water filtration and storage system uses ‘grey water’, which is wastewater generated from domestic activities such as laundry and dishwashing. They feature a series of green roofs and walls covered with vegetation. The holistic tropical landscaping maximizes the use of a small area beautifully.

Ambika P3 will also be home to a series of talks, debates and lectures, on the theme of Design Diplomacy. This will investigate how architecture and design can be a tool for diplomatic engagement. For more information, please visit www.britishcouncil.org

Also on display at the International Architecture and Design Showcase 2012 is a filmic portrait of Johannesburg; a critical look at the post-colonial Africa country Namibia; and investigation into an ecological design revolution from Taiwan.

WITNESS UGANDA Music is like a smile, universally understood; its message can transcend divisive barriers. The dynamic duo of Matt Gould and Griffin Mathews are revolutionizing musical theatre and uniting their desire to entertain AND to make a difference. Witness Uganda is the musical derivative of the Uganda Project, which was founded by Griffin after he took a trip to Uganda to volunteer almost a decade ago and was moved by the poverty of the children he saw. Before meeting Griffin, Matt had also volunteered in West Africa for a couple years with the Peace Corps and was both horrified and touched by the situation there. When the two finally met they bonded over their experiences, a passion to change the world, and a need to help fund Griffin’s struggling non-profit - Uganda Project. Witness Uganda, a musical documenting Griffin’s Journey was their creative genius answer. The show incorporates a moving narrative expressed through music and dance and raises money whilst giving its audience visual feast. Matt Gould says he’s not stopping with the success of that project, but moving forward with more to come: “We have a concert planned over the summer in LA and then a reading in NYC in the fall. It is our hope to line up a full production in the next year so that we can share our story with as many people as possible and inspire people in the US and Uganda to Be the Light,” says Matt. The success of the show and other associated projects are imperative to funding the Uganda Project: “We

have 4 students currently enrolled in college. Short term goals are to make sure that we are able to keep our promise to pass all 10 of our students through high school and college and get them the support they need to find work and become self-sufficient. It will be the test of our generation whether we are able to reconcile our beliefs that OUR way is the best and only way, with the fact that everybody else thinks the same thing about THEIR way. The more we listen, respect, and open our hearts to something new and different, the more we are able to make room for others to live in peace,” says Matt.

We Advance Co-founded by the beautiful actress and activist Maria Bello, We Advance aims to improve the health, safety, and well-being of women in Haiti. We Advance is a grassroots movement that operates on the idea that in order to help all of Haiti they must start from the ground up. This means bringing aid to the worst parts of Haiti. Like a chain that is only as strong as its weakest link, Haiti could only ever be as strong as its weakest parts. This is no easy task and that is why We Advance collaborates with the women in Haiti and acts as central agency network for other organizations working on the common goal. Maria shared with Coco Eco what propelled her to start the organization: “My colleagues and myself were pissed off. We started the movement and clinic because there was a clear void that needed to be filled. Cite Soleil -- the poorest slum in the Western Hemisphere -- had no assistance. The larger NGOs weren’t allowed, due to insurance reasons, to work in that area. It was too dangerous, apparently. But I saw these amazing local women’s groups working on the ground there with no money. So, advocating for these otherwise unsung heroes became our focus. We strive to funnel money down to the 160

local organizations. The Haitian people know what the Haitian people need. It’s not the job of international NGOs to dictate what they need,” says Maria. We Advance’s goal for the future is to leave their programs in the hands of the Haitian women, so the women in these communities feel empowered in mind, body and spirit. With possession of an inner strength they are more equipped for outward change and new set of priorities that identify their own needs. The entire community benefits from a healthy core. Organizations such as We Advance are the facilitator for twenty to thirty thousand patients a year, including their own health outreach program that reaches over 10,000 clients yearly, adult English classes, and vital pre-natal and post-natal care. Bello shares the most effective ways people can help keep the momentum rolling: “For anybody that does not want to be hands-on, on the ground in Haiti the way to be most effective, I think, is by donating to organizations that are really doing the work. I strongly caution everybody, though: Do research. Make sure you know where your money is going and make sure it’s going to the local people and their programs. I can assure you that We Advance turns every $1 into $100 for the poorest of the poor and the women & children of Haiti”.

EVERY MOTHER COUNTS Christy Turlington Burns may be most famous for her supermodel status, but perhaps she should be better known as the true definition of a role model. With an inner beauty that rivals her outward appearance, Christy took her own bittersweet encounter and turned it into activism to save lives. Following the birth of her first child, Christy experienced Post Partum Hemorrhaging (PPH), and if not for swift medical attention she may not have survived. After learning that hundreds of thousands of women die around the world from preventable childbirth-related complications, she did research and travelled on her own dime to Peru to take part in the FEMME Project which had seen the mother mortality rate decrease by 50% in less than 5 years. It was after this moving visit that Christy came up with the idea to make the documentary “No Woman No Cry”. Christy explains, “I knew that this medium was the best way to share these stories with a wider audience. With my filmmaker husband as well as a friend who is a documentary producer, the idea was off and running. It took about two years to complete the film which includes stories from Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala and right here in the U.S.—including my own story,” says Christy. The documentary has been viewed at the Tribeca film festival, health conferences, universities and

on the OWN Network. Change starts with bringing awareness to the cause and Christy uses her celebrity and resources to make a positive difference. Join Christy in her advocacy by signing a pledge that calls for the reduction of senseless and avoidable maternal deaths. The signed pledge will be delivered to various governments and policy makers, culminating with a special presentation to the UN General Assembly in September 2012. Collectively, it is possible to be a force for change through policy. Educate yourself and spread the word so others will be aware and also take action. Every mother DOES count and so does every voice, donation, and action.

MEDICINE FOR HUMANITY If there truly are angels on earth Dr. Leo Lagasse would be described as one, roaming earth disguised as a doctor. It is easy to be moved by the plight of the needy but some people feel compelled not just to feel moved, but to literally move into action. These are the people that change the world. A trip to Africa with his wife in 1995, where Lagasse bore witness to the lack of health care for women inspired him to create Medicine for Humanity. Dr. Lagasse called upon his colleagues, organized a group of physicians to return to Africa, and developed an ongoing program to improve the lives of these women and their families. Dr. Lagasse found that the people of Uganda were most welcoming and cooperative regarding change and help. Lagasse credits their willingness to the success the programs he implemented there. One of the organizations goals was to have medical teams dispatched to provide on-site surgical training to doctors and nurses that will ultimately be treating the people in these underserved regions. Lagasse’s vision was for his team and local doctors to work together. He knew this would be the only way a sustainable healthcare system could operate. Dr. Leo Lagasse, who is a also a medical professor at UCLA shared with Coco Eco one of MFH’s triumphs: “We now have program in place where medical students in their residency at UCLA go to work in Uganda and receive University credit. This is a remarkable and life changing experience for these students. It serves to benefit all parties. Our ultimate goal is to implement these programs nationally”. Medicine for Humanity’s dedicated teams of physicians and residents now perform over 200 surgeries annually. Many of the surgeries are

164

complex and involve high-risk cancers and life-threatening maternal birth injuries and traumas, which could be prevented by caesarian section, often not available in areas distant from a clinic. “For developing countries to advance, the people must advance in age, health and education. A nation of healthy people is a nation that can rise,” says Lagasse. That’s why he aims to assist clinics and hospitals in developing sustainable programs that will address all aspects of women’s health care including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of women’s cancer and maternal birth injuries. Specific goals include decreasing maternal and fetal death rates and the incidence of urinary fistulas. “I perform many fistula surgeries and find this to be a great issue for women in underserved parts of the world. Without appropriate care after childbirth women are victim to fistulas (a tear or gaping hole between the rectum and vagina). This causes pain, discomfort and a terrible odor that can make these women into social outcasts. Surgery to repair the fistulas is like giving these women a new life” explains the Doctor. Another way MFH is making an impact is through the development of a Global Medical Education (GME) program using Internet based communications for delivery of up to date, much needed medical education content. “We customize to the needs of the people specific to the country or region,” says Lagasse. Although technology allows for education and awareness in the U.S, one of Lagasse’s biggest challenges is funding the travel to these countries for him and his team of doctors to carry out their work. “We rely heavily on donations for travel, but also for the education of these women and children. It costs just $55 to send a child to school for a semester in Uganda, and the change that education will make will be the difference between a bright future or no future for these people” says Lagasse. Although he has encountered many challenges both social and political, he concludes: “There are no failures, only degrees of success”.

SurfAir Presents Witness Uganda SurfAir supports new musical that gives back WRITTEN BY: NICOLE LANDERS PHOTOGRAPHY: Jason Merritt

On the evening of April 25th SurfAir hosted at the Hollywood Hills residence of Shawn Gold and photographer Amy Nuesenberger along with Michael Smith, Mike Appel and Ara Katz an intimate gathering for Witness Uganda. SurfAir shares how it is launching now an exclusive all-you-can-fly first class monthly membership service. Witness Uganda was created by two talented artists Griffin Matthews & Matt Gould who were singled out by Wicked composer, Stephen Schwartz, to perform as part of the Disney/ASCAP workshop where it won the Dean Kay and Harold Adamson Awards. Recently this year, it was the recipient of New York’s prestigious Richard Rodgers Award. Griffin spent time doing work with youth in Uganda and learned that much more needed to change in this uncivilized part of the world, that the youth there also had a right to not just important necessities as clean water, food, health care but an education. This musical created by both Matthews & Gould will support more change for others. The night supported awareness and funds to get them to Broadway. www.witnessuganda.com
