LETTER TO YOU THE HOLIDAY ISSUE
As we come to the end of a challenging year, we have an amazing opportunity to reflect on the changes we have personally and globally encountered. If there is one thing I have learned in 2011, it is that change is an inevitable and necessary part of life, and requires an intense dose of faith, passion and determination, often during moments of exhaustion, lack of inspiration, and doubt. However, in these moments we are able to define our character, and design our lives by staying true to ourselves, and our dreams. In embracing change, we allow for growth and new beginnings, when to resist it only keeps us stuck in the past.
and none more so than Cove Diary writer Leilani Munter, as she passionately seeks to save dolphins from slaughter in Japan, whilst Amazon activist, Beth Doane, fights for the rainforest and calls us to action regarding Brazil’s Belo Monte dam project. Leading eco journalist, Johanna Bjork encourages us to contemplate the important issue of nuclear power in a thought-provoking article, and leave it to five-time cancer survivor, Kelly Gallagher to make us giggle, yet inspire us to pause for thought in her guide to surviving the holidays.
During this year, we have witnessed the continual shift in weather patterns that have wrought ongoing damage through massive fires and floods. Politically, the upheaval in the Middle East has resonated a heavy weight in the quest for individual freedom. Financially, we have all been adversely affected by the on-going missteps in both the European and US money markets. I myself humbly admit to times when I have considered throwing in the towel, if not for the community around me that have encouraged me to keep going. To focus, push onwards and upwards, and find a new way forward.
We hope you are inspired to find your own moment of reflection, and enter 2012 with a renewed energy, passion and determination for a new beginning, a better self, and a brighter world.
I am continuously inspired by those I work with, 10

ECO LUXE
LONDON WRITTEN by: Anna
Griffin PHOTOGRAPHY by: Yev Lazanik & Christin Witten, Green Lens Studio
September finally arrives, and I am on my way home for my first visit to London Fashion Week. Leaving LA, I am as giddy as a schoolgirl as I race to make my Virgin Atlantic flight to Heathrow, and experience the London fashion scene full on. It is after all one of the leading lights of the global Fashion Week caravan, and some legendary designers hail from this Mecca, including sustainable couture’s torchbearers, Stella McCartney, Katharine Hamnett, and Dame Vivienne Westwood. Even after my 12-hour flight, I feel alive and invigorated to be back and am immediately reminded of London’s spunky vibe. It’s a unique freedom, stemming from a cheeky, slightly-rebellious-in-a-schoolboy-sort-of-way attitude. This is as unique to the city as cockney-rhyming slang, and influences its creativity on a core level. Still fighting jetlag, my first morning at Fashion Week is intense. After negotiating my entrance to Somerset House, and the media/it-crowd frenzy at the British Fashion Council’s Esthetica Opening Brunch, I am ready for something calmer. It’s here I note that I am in London on behalf of not only Coco Eco, but also as an Ambassador for JP Selects, John Paul Dejoria’s sustainable e-commerce platform. Both brands have partnered with EcoluxeLondon, a British exhibition that showcases and promotes eco luxury as a lifestyle. For me as an Editor, this is where I will find the gold dust for Coco Eco that hasn’t yet reached US shores. A non-profit set up by Eco Couturiers Elena Garcia and Stamo, EcoluxECOLUXE LONDON | Continued

eLondon is a beautifully curated, independent voice, and a refreshing surprise in the predictably fast-paced madness of LFW. It’s a relaxed space where un-preachy, happy, luxurious and fashionforward brands co-exist, and my first thought upon entering, is how serene it is. Standing in a softly lit room filled with ethical luxury and bespoke brands as far as the eye can see, nothing screams “eco,” although I know it is. Instead, Posh Graffiti’s beautiful reclaimed Javanese coffee trees frame gorgeous collections from environmentally aware fashion, accessory, and jewelry designers. Amongst my finds, architecturally sculpted cuffs from Ute Decker; chic city-girl bag brand MT Labels; sublime and stunning bridal from Sanyukta Shrestha; the luxurious silks of Elena Garcia; Linnie McLarty’s spiraling rings, and a white linen tux with recycled net train by Stamo. Other gorgeous labels catch my eye, such as sophisticated swimwear lines Olga Olsson and Agnes Valentine, Makepiece’s beautiful knitwear, and the current women’s wear collections from Outsider, and Hemyca. An innovative venture launched in June 2010, EcoluxeLondon promotes designers and their businesses to the media and trade industries, in addition to providing education regarding environmental stewardship. They also offer advice on marketing, sales, sourcing, production and legal issues, and hold surgeries and workshops to support all participants. Since launching, the exhibition has acquired wellrespected support from 2010 Ambassador Miriam González, wife of UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, and Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture. This year, for their third season, they have joined forces with British eco-beauty, actress and TV host, Donna Air. Enthusiastic to lend her support she tells us, “I’m thrilled to be working with such a wonderful group of people. What they are doing to promote sustainable fashion is amazing.” When I ask Co-Founder Stamo, about the exhibit’s mission, she candidly replies, “EcoluxeLondon was launched because eco luxury brands need more than a showroom in order to prosper. We need a whole support network behind these la28

bels as this is the only way the industry and the general public will be able to see beyond the eco tags.” It’s true. We are in the middle of a global recession with Europe getting hit particularly hard, and times are tough for the fashion industry, particularly sustainable. Still, I am encouraged and inspired to see the positive attitude and showcase of 37 strong, independent ethical brands, whom are all forging forward despite current economic challenges. With the space designed to look like a luxury boutique, Ecoluxe also have the hard-core credentials to back up the beauty. Working with UKTI (UK Trade and Investment), UKFT (Fashion and Textiles Association), ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), the British Wool Centre for Sustainable Fashion, and Fairtrade Gold Foundation, amongst others, they are obviously more than just a pretty space! The two-day event closes with a presentation of the JP Selects Excellence Awards and 12 month contracts on JPSelects.com granted to winning brands, MT Labels, Ute Decker, Elena Garcia, Linnie McLarty, Sanyukta Shrestha, and Outsider. Before leaving, I ask Elena García, Director of Communications and Eco Couturier, her overall hopes for the future. “We would love to be able to work with well known brands and corporations. Ecoluxe has the potential to become a powerful brand, but we need the support to make it happen.”** ECO LUXE LONDON www.ecoluxelondon.org

NY FASHION WEEK
AVEDA INSPIRES SUSTAINABILITY WRITTEN by: Beth Doane PHOTOGRAPHY provided by: AVEDA
There is perhaps nothing more exhilarating for a fashionista than a seat at the heart of New York Fashion Week. It’s a melodramatic, chaotic sea of high heels, big attitudes, celebrities, and glamour that would exhaust even the most seasoned and styled diva. So imagine being amidst it all trying to cover it from a sustainable angle and from the perspective that fashion can be meaningful, sustainable, create global change, and give back. At times, it’s not an easy task. What is inspiring, however, is that there are brands making a difference. With the glamour, there are also more and more brands giving back each year. This year, Aveda announced that for their sixth fashion week in a row they would be promoting their profoundly effective environmental initiative CatWalks for Water. NY FASHION WEEK | Continued
NY FASHION WEEK | Continued
The brand partnered with Christian Siriano’s runway show, among others, for the Spring/Summer 2012 fashion week and they have helped prevent approximately 7,300 plastic water bottles from being thrown away in landfills.
their designers’ collections, as so often animal parts are obtained in ways that are incredibly inhumane, and the food they provided at the shows was organic and/or locally-sourced.
Since it’s founding in 1978, Aveda’s mission has been to provide industry professionals with products that would be loved by their customer base while being friendly to the earth. Their hair care, skin care, makeup, and lifestyle products are botanically driven and have put them at the forefront of environmental sustainability, and it’s exciting to see them going from catwalks to creating great ways to continually create change each year through fashion.
Even the printed show invitations and programs were made using paper that is at least 20% post-consumer recycled.
Aveda even collaborated with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to supply free tap water at various New York City locations throughout Fashion Week. Among the designers who chose to work with Aveda were Jason Wu and Project Runway winner Christian Siriano. At first, some seemed confused and even shocked at Aveda’s decision to use tap water amidst reports that much of our tap water in the United States contains harmful contaminants, pesticide residue, chlorine and even traces of prescription medications. However, the Environmental Protection Commissioner, Cas Holloway, expressed that New York City actually has some of the best and most pure drinking water in the world and that so much of our bottled water is far more contaminated than our tap water, which is required to be tested constantly for safety.
For the Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion week, Aveda helped prevent approximately 7,300 plastic water bottles from being thrown away in landfills by providing limited edition EarthLust water bottles backstage.
Holloway was ecstatic to work with Aveda on increasing awareness of this fact, and on the effectiveness of the water system used by the DEP. Aveda also provided limited edition EarthLust water bottles backstage at their shows, each designed with the signature of the participating designers, and these limited edition bottles replaced the use of plastic water bottles, increasing the usage of NYC tap water. Aveda also does not support the use of animal fur or products in 32
Other ethically based brands and designers like Edun, by Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, also appeared on the runway this year. Edun features African infused prints with many refined yet fun pieces made solely by hand in Africa and designed to give back to African countries in desperate need of aid. Founded in 2008, together with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Invisible Children, Edun set up the Conservation Cotton Initiative Uganda and through Edun’s operations it’s able to build long term, sustainable growth opportunities by supporting manufacturers, infrastructure and community building initiatives where they are needed most. Edun also works continually to use its experience as an example to show the viability of trade with Africa and to use its voice to encourage others within the fashion industry to do business with Africa, helping to create long-term commercial and social development. Wherever Edun operates, it requires all factories to adhere to legal labour and health

and safety regulations, as well as good working conditions. Edun engages independent auditors to conduct checks every six months to ensure its code of conduct is met and works with factory owners to recommend improvements. Also in attendance was John Patrick’s line Organic. He opted to show his collection the day before Fashion Week’s official launch, right in the West Village. For John, this new line is meant to serve as a powerful metaphor for the journey our planet is engaged in and his sustainable fabrics and eco dyes are completely in line with his personal philosophy. Finally, one of my favorites is Costello Tagliapietra, a brand that comes totally alive on the runway with stunning feminine pieces, elegant dresses and bold splashes of color perfect for spring and summer. They are also known for their innovative Airdye process which revolutionizes apparel coloring and uses up to 90 percent less water and 85 percent less energy than other conventional dyeing methods used within the industry. **

With a respect for craftmanship and a desire to support and sustain local talent, Zingoni uses her extensive couture experience to fashion her designs entirely from recycled materials. Each individually chosen fabric goes to making a collection based around “egg” shapes and deconstructed forms. This piece in white and red silk crepe, has a contrasting bias border and batwing sleeves.
From Somewhere’s collections are made with luxury designer pre-consumer waste, reclaiming textiles as a design solution to an environmental problem. Each piece is individually cut, with an eclectic and original use of color and paneling, making From Somewhere pieces instantly recognizable. The beauty of each piece is its uncompromising balance between contemporary design and a poetic and ethical solution to waste. This retro inspired piece harks back to their beginnings, and is made from pieced knit and jersey luxury waste fabrics.

BIONEUMA
BAGIGIA
Viennese label km/a embody the concept of the fusion of fashion, art and performance, while producing a beautiful, sophisticated collection, each season from a different, yet equally unique material. As a label, they consistently utilize non-traditional, discarded and end of life materials, to handcraft their unique one of a kind pieces. Employing a range of materials including roofing paper, rice and postal shipping bags, prison blankets, windsurfing sails and decommissioned parachutes, each item is individually handcrafted and unique.
Bioneuma is founded on a belief in eco friendly lifestyle choices, and combined with a love of manufacturing quality clothing. Emphasizing the purety of hand produced garments, the collection incorporates a timeless range of leisurewear made entirely from organic combed cotton. Clean lines combined with careful design, high quality materials and exquisite finishing, form the basis of the range. The collection also features the hand drawn artwork of famous Italian sculptor and painter, Guido Sgaravatti.
Inspired by a passer by on a cold day, casually carrying a hot-water bottle under her arm, on the terminally chic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, an Italian love affair began. Obsessed by the unexpected image, Bagigia was born, a leather clad hot water bottle shaped bag in a range of brilliant colors, embellished with a stainless steel stopper, a practical shoulder strap, and useful inner pockets to hold cell phones, pens and key rings. Entirely handmade, the skills required to make Bagigia rely on generations of Italian leather tailors, combining craft, skill and the finest Italian leathers.

MEO FUSCIUNI
One of the winners of Vogue’s Who Is on Next Award, Alessio Spinelli produces a line of shoes entirely made by hand and produced in Italy. The interchangeable Ribbon Shoe incorporates a wooden sole and heel with leather tabs and straps allowing for the interchange of various jewel bright stretch satin ties. While the interchangeable heel collection also features various screw in heel types and shapes, making for a multi-functional and multi useful pair of shoes for any occasion and outfit.
Avant-garde, Danish designer Barbara I Congini’s ongoing environmental concerns shape and direct her collection, sourcing most of her fabrics from organic sources, she produces her collection in fair trade conditions, recycles, and works towards safer production methods. Her aesthetic is far from granola however, Congini’s designs are disturbingly beautiful, ethereal and fantastic. Totally monochromatic, bold in shape, varying in depth of texture and sheen, there is an infinite depth to her work. Her wrapping, twisting, draping, shredding and eccentric cutting is magnificent.
Artisanal perfumerers Meo Fusciuni, is an alchemic fusion of three different people and cultures of beauty. Fusciuni, which means spring in Sicily, is the product of memory, and the evocation of joy, artfully combined in a small glass bottle. Composed exclusively of natural, essential oils, Meo Fusciuni redefine the charm and tradition of the art of perfumery. Inspired by place and time, each perfume evokes a different location, from the bazaars of Istanbul, to magic of Morocco and the light of Sicily.

ULTRA PASSIONATE PEOPLE DOING THEIR BIT FOR THE FUTURE
Ultra Spring/Summer 2012 collection.
WRITTEN by: Johanna
Björk, Goodlifer.com PHOTOGRAPHY provided by: ULTRA
Ever since I added to word eco-fashion to my vocabulary, I have wished for something like Ultra to come along. Something that is as cutting edge and inspired as it is sexy and badass. Organic cotton and muted colors are great, but sometimes a girl just wants to feel like a vixen. A clever vixen, with a calculator in my back pocket — that’s exactly how ULTRA’s clothing makes me feel. There’s a tech nerd factor in the innovative use of materials and cuts that mixes very well with a sexy coolness that could be compared to Alexander Wang or Celine. Lead by Tengku Jamidah and Anita Hawkins, We Are Ultra is a creative collective based in Malaysia. They started in 2009, with a blog where the group shared ideas about innovation that got them all excited. From the start they have been driven by sustainable design and now collaborate with artists, designers, companies and organisations “to create meaningful products, experiences and workshops from our own innovationminded point of view.” The collective currently also includes Malaysian SPOTLIGHT ON FASHION | Continued

designers Jonathan Liang and Tengku Syahmi. ULTRA is just one of their projects. “ULTRA started of as a blog on all things sustainably related,” says Co-Founder Tengku Jamidah. “Blogging about it kept us inspired and informed, then Anita (the other Co-Founder) and I felt a little brave and decided to launch our little organic Bathcare range and sell a selection of ecofriendly lifestyle products that we felt was lacking in the market. It then evolved into a fashion line with Jonathan and Syahmi joining the team. ULTRA was always about passionate people doing their bit for the future, keeping it fun, happy and hip!”
immersing ourselves into different cultures and keeping it an adventure. The arts has had a major impact on ULTRA from Antioni films, Wang Qingsong photos, our ULTRA music contributors to She-Ra — princess of power.” The brand successfully funded its Fall 2011 collection through Kickstarter and has already showcased at major fashion weeks in Paris, London and Asia. In October of this year they won the Ethical Fashion Forum’s Innovation in Design and Sourcing Award.
“ We do whatever we love. Without defining ourselves and being multi-disciplinary it attracts collaborators and gives us room to grow”
When it comes to creativity, it’s sometimes good to surround yourself with likeminded, equally driven creative thinkers. “I feel that working as a creative collective gives us more room to explore and experiment with sustainability in a way Tengku that no one else has,” says Jamidah. “Anita and I always like to say that we work on projects that are fun and capture our interest. We do whatever we love. Without defining ourselves and being multi-disciplinary it attracts collaborators and gives us room to grow.” Now in their third season, ULTRA uses innovative materials like tencel, recycled PET, recycled polyester, organic wool, discarded tuxedos and salmon skin to create high fashion with a sustainable core. They also work with local tailors and support ethical production standards. So where do the people behind ULTRA look for inspiration? ”Everywhere,” says Jamidah. “Life experiences, my travels... usually coming from
Jamidah
When visiting We Are Ultra’s website, it’s easy to be confused, because these creative minds have many irons in the fire. Instead of going with the regular seasonal collection schedule, they work on specific projects. A recent one that stands out is ULTRA 10, a capsule collection containing ten highly versatile, modular pieces that can be combined infinitely. For example, there’s the 4-1 coat that can be worn as a shirt, a dress, or a skirt, and the 2-1 jacket that changes into a waist coat. The idea is that these are all the pieces of clothing you need to create enough unique looks for a whole year. Pieces can be sent in any time for mending, and after those 365 days have passed, you can even return your ten garmetns to be recycled in exchange for a discount on new wardrobe pieces. ULTRA has encouraged fans of their clothing to take the challenge of not wearing anything (except accessories) that is not from the ULTRA 10 collection. Photos of challengers and their outfits can be seen on ULTRA’
Flickr page. As Kuala Lumpur Design Week came to a close, ULTRA and their extended collective decided to get a group of friends together — designers, musicians, entrepreneurs and stylists — deck them out in top to toe ULTRA wan take them it out onto the streets of Changkat Bukit Bintang for an ULTRA Flashmob, another We Are Ultra project. The mobbers stayed out Into the wee hours of the morning. “It was such a joy to see the happy people enjoying the ULTRA work,” says the team. ULTRA’s designs would look right at home in the closet of even the most painfully trendy fashionista. They’re very now. But what about the future of eco-fashion? “I’d like to see it grow in a way that it becomes more affordable and accessible to people.” says Jamidah. SPOTLIGHT ON FASHION | Continued

“Also I’m interested to see technology develop based on this movement, there’s pineapple fiber and milk fabric, how amazing is that? Also, the use of more ethical practices by bigger manufacturers. Garments without guilt is a good model, one that the corporations should emulate.”
ULTRA’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection
For Shiseido, ULTRA designed a special limited edition bottle of their signature limited Shiseido ZEN perfume. All proceeds from the sales of this perfume benefit the Japan Red Cross Tsunami Relief Program. In order to produce less waste, ULTRA produces everything on a made-to-order basis. They are looking into exploring alternate applications such as 3D-printing tailoring, kinetic harvesting and modular open-sourced designs, and are also currently working with UNHCR to provide production opportunities to refugees. Assuming you don’t have an aversion to the colors black or white, what’s not to love about this brand? We’re not sure, but we do know for sure that you will be seeing a lot more of ULTRA in the upcoming year. ** ULTRA www.weareultra.com

Fall is upon us, which means winter isn’t far behind, and for most of us that means the onset of a Vitamin-D deficiency and a vanishing sun kissed glow. The days of baking ourselves in baby oil or going tanorexic are officially over as well and we can all agree that skin cancer and the leathered look are never going to be cool, so what’s a girl without her summer rays to do? Luckily, we now have options that are safe, sure to work, and leave us feeling as sexy as a breezy summer day in the Caribbean sun. Check out some of our favorites and you’ll never say no to a summer glow again!

FAKE BAKE We love it because it contains botanically extracted ingredients and no preservatives and it’s designed to enhance your skin’s own pigment, giving even the lightest skin a gorgeous natural glow. The deep cocoa color allows you to apply the product evenly, ensuring smooth, streak-free results every time. For those moments in the sun, Fake Bake even offers a unique, green-tea fortified sunblock — SOL Survivor — that provides essential skin protection from damaging UVA and UVB rays. All of their products moisturize, hydrate, and protect the body without clogging the pores or irritating sensitive skin and, since it’s not chemically based, have no harsh odors either. Their Color Guide Formula “Shows Where It Goes” and skin tans instantly as you apply, easy as pie. ** www.fakebake.com
CHOCOLATE SUN ORGANICS These uber-natural remedies and self-tanners are truly pure, right down to their organically grown herbs, essential oils, and distilled water based formulas. There are no artificial fragrances, only aromatic and essential oils, and they even went a step further and eliminated the common chemical compounds found in most products that still tout the organic label. They choose grapefruit seed extract as their main preservative and, of course, there is never any animal testing. The line includes luscious body scrubs, sensual cocoa candles, and of course self tanners, that left actress Kristen Davis raving, “I found this great organic self-tanner, called Chocolate Sun. It’s a lovely lotion that smells like chocolate and doesn’t streak.” We agree and fell madly in love with this sultry summer skin hero too. ** www.chocolatesun.net/products.htm

Multi-usage dry oil golden shimmer – It’s a plentiful dose of French glitz and total glamour. With this little bottle you can shimmer-ize your locks, legs, face, décolleté, and pretty much anything else you want. It contains 98.8% natural ingredients, including six superactivated precious plant oils (such as vitamin E, borage, St. John’s Wort, sweet almond, camellia, hazelnut, macadamia), plus golden pearls for a decadent hint of glimmer. It’s a major favorite of celebrity stylists and A-listers alike, and being preservative-free, silicone-free, and with clinical research showing that it improves the overall appearance of stretch marks, we are not surprised. Say yes to the shimmer! ** www.nuxe.com
SHESWAI
If there is one thing that screams of steamy summer days, it’s freshly painted pedicures. This polish is for the girl that wants to stay glam without the gross stuff found in most of the pretty paints out there. Founder Debbie was born and raised in Southern California, the land of sunshine and sandals. One inspired a quest for wellness and the other inspired a great pedicure. After working for several years in some of the best spas and salons in Los Angeles, Debbie created a collection of lacquer that’s fun, chic, and smart. Sheswai is always free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP’s, and their wood caps are made from sustainably harvested wood, grown on familyowned tree farms. They are also the first nail polish in the beauty industry to use a custom wood turned cap, thereby reducing the use of plastic. And to really top it all off: It’s made in the USA.” **
RMS LIVING LUMINIZER
Finally, for the face, to ensure bright eyes and sweet cheeks there’s RMS and Christopher Drummond. We can’t live without the RMS Living Luminizer, designed by celeb makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift and packed with organic minerals that create a super sheer superstar glow. It delivers pure radiance and luminosity while infusing the skin with a combination of enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. As Christopher Drummond states, “You will fall in love with his vegan bronzing powder that gives you the perfect mix of “bronze” and “glow” A little goes a long way, and not only will you get the perfect Brazilian skin makeover, but your skin will thank you for it throughout the year.” ** www.futurenatural.com https://www.christopherdrummond.com

2011 WRITTEN by: Leilah Mundt PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED by: Odacite
Natural beauty champions of the world, your message has been heard loud and clear. You now live in a world where luxe, high performance beauty need not come at the sacrifice of your health. A world where you can have your jet black, waterproof, volumnizing mascara…and wear it, too. With over eight hundred natural and organic brands introduced to the marketplace every year, organic & natural beauty is here to stay. In 2011 we saw incredible advances in natural beauty, from cutting edge technology, to flawless and inspiring design. Let’s recap some of the star players from this year who have set the tone for what is sure to be a spectacular 2012. From Intelligent Nutrients came the groundbreaking Plant Stem Cell Science Renewal Complex. Horst Rechelbacher and his genius team of chemists have harnessed the power of plant stem cells by reproducing and cultivating them in their lab. The result? A plant growth strategy that dramatically reduces their environmental footprint, and plants that contain antioxidant levels up to 1000 times those found in nature. The serum fights free radicals, reverses aging and coerces skin to act youthful. 68

The Über hip, bespoke line of skincare, Absolution, was launched stateside in 2011 and has seriously changed the look of “organic”. The concept is brilliant in its simplicity; mix various oils into your choice of face cream to truly customize your daily regimen. Each product is formulated with the highest quality, organic ingredients and is super effective for both women and men. And the packaging suffice to say that natural never looked so cool. On the color front we saw two tiny lines that pack a big punch. KjaerWeis, a creation from NYC makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer-Weis, wins the award for achievements in earth friendly packaging. Far from its recycled cardboard predecessors, the gorgeous cheek, lip and eye makeup cases are mini architectural art pieces that are meant to last a lifetime and are simply refilled when empty. The silver cases double as a mirror and come with a polishing cloth, and the color inside doesn’t disappoint either. A beautiful line of essential shades are made only with organic ingredients in a color palette that ensures something for everyone. Ilia Pure Lip Care, brainchild of Canadian Sasha Plavsic, provides conditioning, gloss and lipstick all in one tube, and has set the beauty world abuzz with its luscious organic formula and killer shades. Housed in recycled aluminum casings, there are just six to choose from which makes it easy for devotees to indulge in the entire line. Try the perfectly nude “Nobody’s Baby” with smoky eyes for a night on the dance floor, or the deep burgundy “Arabian Nights” to make your holiday party look a glamorous one. Finally, we look at one of the most toxic of all beauty categories; nail care. Polish companies have been touting the “three free” for-

A BREATH OF

AIR WRITTEN by: Nichola

In my preparation to speak with Donna Air I find myself having difficulty putting a list of questions together. If I am honest, whilst I continuously scratch out questions, it dawns on me that my frustration might be out of a little tinge of the green-eyed monster. She is accomplished, beautiful, famous, a mother, and young. As a ‘young’ person myself I admit, I look at what she had done thus far with her life, and am amazed. To top it all off, when you meet her she is bubbly, amicable, Dress and shrug, ELENA GARCIA www.elenagarciastudio.com Ivory silk blouse and wool and silk jacket and trousers, OUTSIDER www.outsiderfashion.com Fairtrade gold brooches, LINNIE MCLARTY www.linniemclarty.com
and of course, aesthetically gorgeous, and all I want to ask her is, “How do you do it all?” COVER STORY | Continued

Donna Air is a 32-year-old Geordie, born in Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom. She lives in South West London, however we’ve been told that her acting career might be heading to LA soon. Air first became famous on the children’s BBC series ‘Byker Grove’ and since then she had been a presenter on TV shows such as ‘The Big Breakfast’, MTV, ITV’s ‘Pop Stars’ and has acted in the BBC’s adaptation of Lynda La Plantes ‘Supply and Demand’, Paramount Films ‘Still Crazy’ and the BBC’s ‘Hotel Babylon’. More recently she has evolved into a green life, and works closely with the Soil Association in Britain. She is actively involved in areas of health, beauty and fashion as well as being the face of EcoluxeLondon September 2011, a non-profit platform in London that promotes fashion-related eco-luxury brands.
By nature she is a tomboy despite her looks, and lives for her daughter - 8 year old Freya. Her natural energy is infectious and Elena from Ecoluxe shares that on the fashion shoot she “had a real laugh, was enthusiastic, and was effortless to work with.”
“I have to say that the women in my life inspire me on a daily basis. They are all so interesting and strong, and we are always there to give each other a boost.”
EcoluxeLondon is an exciting intiative launched in June 2010, which promotes designers and their businesses to the media and trade industries. Their aim is to raise awareness of ecological issues to the public, and they are thrilled that Air signed up to help. Elena García, the Director of Communications and designer of eponymous label Elena García Eco Couture, explains that Donna is the perfect person to represent the company this year. She supports sustainable fashion, and has an affiliation with both the London and international fashion crowds. Ecoluxe work with important VIP’s who represent their message, including 2010 Ambassador Miriam González, wife of Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Nick Clegg, and Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture in the UK. Previously it would have been the most established cluster of stars raising awareness, however now it is the younger stars lifting their game, and Ecoluxe describe Air as “engaging, and a breeze to work with.” As a 2011 Ambassador of their brand, Air has assisted in supporting smaller, independent fashion labels, whilst promoting the message of sustainability within the fashion industry. Donna Air is quintessentially attractive with blonde hair, pale blue eyes, light skin and a slender frame. However, what instantly attracts me is not her looks, but her ability to laugh at herself. The three things that really impress me is that she is chatty, felicitously so in fact. She also takes a genuine interest in important matters, and has 72
absolutely no airs or graces, despite her name.
Although Air has been labeled as a fun-loving party girl in days gone by, her tone is now more secure, aware and stable than I had imagined. She explains that it has been the birth of her daughter that really opened her mind to a healthy and sustainable life. As we discussed her move towards eco consciousness, she explains that, “I became a lot more interested in nutrition when I became a mom. I became aware of the connection between healthy food, and a healthy body and mind. I also wanted to set a good example for my daughter.” She has been working alongside Organic Food UK to raise the quality of food distributed around the country. She explains that Organic Food has already raised the standard of food sold in Great Britain, and that their biggest success has been in children’s nurseries where there has been no previous legislation governing the food available there. She also published the Grown in Britain Cookbook with the Soil Association in 2009, and tells me that it is now known that intellectual clarity and agility is improved when the mind receives proper nourishment. It seems that it is therefore a natural progression to extend her interest towards practices in ethical and sustainable fashion. When I ask her why

she wants to be involved with the sustainable fashion movement she states, “I’m not 19 any more, and therefore there is no excuse for me to not try and make better choices. I also enjoy finding better ways of doing things, and I love fashion!” “I was really excited when a ‘friend of a friend’ organized a meeting with Ecoluxe,” she explains. “I actually really liked the designs from most of the brands and designers exhibiting, and the stand outs for me were Outsider, Elena Garcia, Stamo, Sanyukta Shrestha, and gorgeous jewelry from both Ute Decker, and Linnie McLarty.”
“Always recycle and never throw away old clothes...so helping out charities and organizations such as Oxfam in the UK, who take your old clothes and sell them cheap to raise money for aid in Africa and other third world countries, is something I think everyone should do.”
Air also wears more commercial eco brands such as People Tree, Noir, Stella McCartney, People Tree, and the coveted knitwear label from supermodel Lilly Cole, the North Circular. However she is now feeling more inclined to wear smaller, more bespoke designers such as, “The delicate silk collections by Elena Garcia, the bold and glamorous designs by Stamo, and fabulously wearable and fun dresses by Beulah, who I also hear the Duchess of Cambridge is a fan of!” Beyond ecoaware labels, she believes, “We should also acknowledge and recognize some of the positive improvements that the larger design houses and high stores have made to be more sustainable.”
Beyond her obvious passion for sustainable fashion and food, I am fascinated to find out how 76
she extends this newfound awareness into everyday life. When I ask if she has any eco fashion and beauty tips, she replies, “Always recycle and never throw away old clothes,” and she is matter-offact about it. “The saying goes that one person’s trash is another’s treasure - so helping out charities and organizations such as Oxfam in the UK, who take your old clothes and sell them cheap to raise money for aid in Africa and other third world countries, is something I think everyone should do. As far as my beauty regime goes, I drink lots of water and always cleanse my face before going to bed no matter how tired I may be!” Her favorite eco beauty products are the Vapour make-up range by Content Beauty. She’s also a huge fan of the sublime products from Melvita - “Especially the Moistening Gel,” she whispers. Air reveals that it has been a life changing experience being a single mom. This 32 year-old mother’s face is warm, both because of her love for the camera and her natural beauty. Her epiphany to move to a sustainable existence has been gradual and as she explains her relationship with her daughter, you get a real sense that this woman is evolving into a ‘to be followed’ health and eco fashion role model. She explains that she is very conscious and that because children look up to their parents, you have to be cautious in the way that you behave around them.
Air goes on to explain that educating children about appreciating living an eco-life is, “A slightly grey area and a fine line because children are children, and you don’t want to put the world’s problems on their little shoulders. I tend to keep conversation light about the choices mommy makes and not dictate to her in the hope that she will naturally bear my guidance in mind as she grows up.” You get a real feeling that motherhood has been a very wholesome experience for this young woman. As we further discuss her daughter, Air explains, “She - Freya - definitely shares my love of food and understands clearly why I buy organic or local, given better taste, and effects on the planet, etc. She doesn’t quite understand the whole reason to buy sustainable fashion but it

is something we are exploring together with our shopping trips. Just like any child she wants to buy what she likes the look of.”
“I know it sounds cliché but if I can inspire even just one person to make a change, then it has to be worth it.” What a great attitude!
I finally get the perfect opportunity to ask the question I’ve been wanting to: How does a busy, working single Mom on the go manage personal balance? She responds with, “Wine - lots of it!!! Obviously I’m joking, as all moms know it is a juggling act, and some weeks run perfectly whilst others can feel like I am just treading water!!” Air also enjoys yoga, movies, walking and anything active. She explains, “I love to travel, have a lust for life, and find fun in so many things.” We go on to discuss role models that she has had and she clarifies that, “I have to say that the women in my life inspire me on a daily basis. They are all so interesting and strong, and we are always there to give each other a boost. Women never fail to impress me. We are so adaptable to most situations.” As a strong woman I ask her if there is anything in particular that she would like to ‘imprint’ on the world, and she responds that she’s, “Pretty happy with the choices I’ve made and have no regrets.” I pry further and ask, “Donna, if you could change one thing, what would it be?” With thought, she responds, “If I could change one thing about my life (and be greedy), it would be time. It is so precious so I always try to use it wisely, but every woman I know will tell you there are never enough hours in the day. If I could change one thing, it would be to give us bonus time.”
“If I could change one thing about my life (and be greedy), it would be time. It is so precious so I always try to use it wisely, but every woman I know will tell you there are never enough hours in the day. If I could change one thing, it would be to give us bonus time.”
As we wrap up, I have to ask Air if the rumors I am hearing about her heading to Hollywood are true? “Yes, I’m very lucky. It’s such an exciting time work wise,” she smiles proudly. “I have lots of opportunities on the horizon. I am very happy and have been working on quite a lot behind the scenes. I have two business concepts I am launching next year.” Air has put her priority in health and wellbeing. As she explains, after becoming a mother she understands the need for a balanced, natural diet, and the benefits of companies like Ecoluxe for the environment. As an age of awareness evolves, it is encouraging to know that celebrities are advocating healthier living. Air even said herself,
Despite her evolution, there is still a sense of innocence about Air, which exudes in a genuine and open friendliness. She is proudly encouraging woman to understand that inner beauty is one of the most important ways to look good on the outside, via diet and lifestyle. As such she is a great role model for young woman, and her shift to being an advocate for the planet, inspirational.
As I admitted earlier, I started this interview process with a tinge of jealousy about this beautiful young woman that appears to have it all together. However, having interview Ms. Air, a vibrant, young single mother, who is striving to maintain a balanced and healthy life for her daughter, an impending big-screen Hollywood career, as well as her new role as an ambassador for Mother Nature, I am inspired. You just can’t help but like her and want to see her succeed. Maybe it’s the healthy food or interest in ethical couture but whatever it is, it definitely is a breath of fresh air!** DONNA AIR www.donnaair.com ECO LUXE LONDON www.ecoluxelondon.org

It was difficult to choose only six women to represent our top leaders for 2011. This has been a year of tremendous global upheaval on many levels, and the list of issues needing leadership is long. However, as we have seen, there are many women stepping up to make a difference, and it is inspiring to witness the girls raising their voices, and in doing so, much needed awareness and change. We therefore honor and acknowledge not only the ladies mentioned in this article, but also every brilliant female we have featured in this column this year, as well as those we are yet to meet! DR. JANE GOODALL You already know that this pioneering conservationist and animal behavior specialist took an unobstructed look into the life of the chimpanzee, a dedication to the species, the life long friends that have kept her intrigued with curiosity ever since. Dr. Goodall provided us with our first perspective on Chimp behavior and communication, and has remained the source by which we develop our knowledge and opinions surrounding the Chimp family. She has outlined the startling similarities with anecdotes that remind us of our own, building a community of love around the subjects she is so passionate about. Telling stories about William, the funny one, who “once stole a blanket, dragged it up the hillside, then draped it over his head and felt around him like a child who has been blindfolded” gets people involved and builds a sense of relativity, begging the questionare we really so different? When she went to Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park back in 1960 to research chimpanzees in the wild, Jane Goodall shook up the scientific establishment. She found chimps who could make and use tools, like human beings; they’re not vegetarians and they clearly have individual personalities. Dr. Goodall has focused more and more on education in areas able to impact the Chimps. The Jane Goodall Foundation aims to “Contribute to the preservation of great apes and their habitats by combining conservation with education and promote sustainability to create a worldwide network of young people who care deeply for their human community, animals and their environment.” Now, Goodall, 77, travels 300 days a year to raise money and awareness for animal rights and environmental causes. She has recently made media appearances with Charlize Theron and Dave Matthews, a couple of the celebrities that support her efforts. Also be sure to check out “Jane’s Journey,” a new film about her extraordinary life, featuring never-beforeseen 8mm footage from her early African years and appearances by Angelina Jolie and Pierce Brosnan.**

TRUDIE STYLER This powerful woman is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to supporting humanity and the environment. A renowned film producer, founder of Xingu Films, an actress, mother, organic farmer, activist, environmentalist, married to Sting and with 20 years of work in preserving rainforests around the world under her belt, she founded Rainforest Foundation International in 1989 along with her husband. They both saw first hand what was happening in Brazil and focused on taking action with the indigenous people, later funding programs in other countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. In 1999, Rainforest Foundation FUND replaced Rainforest Foundation International and today the mission is to protect and support indigenous peoples, and traditional populations of the rainforest in an effort to protect their environment and fulfill their rights. The Foundation turned 21 years old in 2010, and to date, Trudie has raised more than $23 million for the cause. On one of her many visits to Ecuador she witnessed first hand the environmental damages caused by oil exploitation in the rainforest. “I met mothers in Ecuador who have to make an appalling decision: either to give their children no water or contaminated water, knowing that it will make them sick,” recalled Trudie. There are over 30,000 people and half are children that were exposed to oil contamination through air, water and land in the provinces of Sucumbíos and Orellana. This contamination has led to wide spread cancer, miscarriages, skin disorders and respiratory illnesses. After meeting the families first hand, Trudie enrolled The Rainforest Fund, UNICEF and the Frente de la Defensa de la Amazonia, a pilot project that brings clean water to areas with high levels of contamination, severe health needs, poverty and minimal access to basic services. She is truly unstoppable when she puts her energy behind something. With projects around the world in South America, Asia and now Africa, this incredible woman is committed to the protection of the world’s flora and fauna, and the indigenous communities and nations living in those habitats. With her energy, passion and zeal for life, if anyone can tackle this seemingly insurmountable issue for Africa and beyond, it’s Trudie!**

This eco advocate has redefined the boundaries of a successful woman, by carving out a space for people who break down the ordinary and create extraordinary examples for women everywhere. By combining her passions for racecar driving, vegetarianism and animal rights, activism and advocacy, you get Leilani Munter. A jack-of-all-trades and master of many!
According to Success Magazine, Rusty Robertson is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in America. She has won multiple accolades for her work in marketing, advertising, and public relations, and through her philanthropic associations she has raised over $200 million dollars.
How about putting that hybrid in the body of a supermodel that happens to have a university degree in biology? Enter Leilani Munter! This racecar driving super-genius eco-goddess has been an environmental activist for as long as she can remember. Leilani walks the walk and better yet, she drives it home at 100 miles per hour. While most racecar drivers would slap a promotion for Snuggies on their hood if it led to more sponsorship dollars, she refuses all investors and endorsers unless they are eco-friendly, and can prove it. Her determination to put green under the social spotlight has garnered quite the buzz. In 2012, Leilani is launching an “Eco Dream Team” - a 200 mph eco education project to spread awareness to 75 million race fans and compel them to reconsider their day-to-day decisions for our planet. “Instead of a racecar asking fans to buy something, we will be using the racecar to call the fans to action, inspiring them to make a difference,” she says. As a racecar driver, Leilani is out to prove that green isn’t just for hippies anymore. She is teaming up with 20 top partners that will collectively be her eco dream team from three categories: renewable energy, environmental organizations & non-profits, and companies who have stood out as leaders in corporate responsibility and stewardship for the environment. And all this as well as her regular visits and activism to save the Tajii dolphins in Japan. GO TEAM!**

Rusty is a co-founder of Stand Up To Cancer, a cutting edge research fund that is focused on finding a cure for the number-one killer in the United States: cancer. To draw attention to her cause, she co-produced Stand Up To Cancer’s two history-making televised events uniting the major television networks, celebrities, and prominent leaders in cancer research and patient advocacy. “It is crucial we bring issues like cancer to the public in a way that will ignite and activate,” Rusty states. Her journey is a personal one. When her mother passed away suddenly from undetected cancer, she was galvanized to do something. Rusty met with a cancer specialist who explained to her the intersection of molecular biology and technology. She focused on getting leading scientists to communicate with doctors through Stand Up To Cancer, so that more lives can be saved, and greater awareness raised. In her quest to stop cancer in its tracks, Rusty sums it up best, “Surround yourself with people that feed your soul, and drive your passion.”**

NANA FOSU-RANDALL The former highest ranking African woman at the UN has been creating peace and prosperity for African women practically since she was born in Kumasi, Ghana in West Africa. Coming to the US when she was a teenager, alone and with practically nothing, she has been able to turn hardship into action through perseverance. For nearly 30 years, Nana worked with the United Nations, the last 18 years as the Chief Financial Officer with the Peace Keeping Forces one of the top members of the United Nations Secretariat, the highest-ranking women of color at that time. Through her work with the UN, she was one of the people responsible for the rebuilding and cleanup efforts following war and conflict situations in places such as Tanzania, Namibia, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Israel and Lebanon, and in Kuwait and Iraq during the Gulf War. She has seen much suffering during her service with the UN and has grown to believe that there is an alternative to war - the promotion of peace, the sharing of resources, and the creation of understanding among all people. Nana’s professional observations made her realize that violent civil conflicts always left in their wake widespread destruction of social and economic infrastructures, with a greater impact on women and children. These include poverty, disease, and lack of access to education. She commented that even though there is so much oil in Iraq that one can drown in oil slicks in the desert, some women and children go hungry. Everywhere, it is the women and children who suffer most in wars. In response to the suffering women, mothers and daughters of Africa, Nana and a group of her friends founded, Voices of African Mothers. Nana is currently engaged in a new project to promote sustainable micro-communities, that rely on permaculture and advanced technology to meet or exceed the Millennium Development Goals for African communities. She along with her team will be heading to Rio+20 the United Nations Environmental Conference to discuss this important issue, in addition to bringing attention to the urgent issue of land grabbing in Africa that is displacing hundreds of thousands of people throughout many countries in the continent. Even her own property in Africa has been under ‘siege’ as of late, by foreign investors who want to take control of her prime river front land. Nana will never sell this property, as it is home to many people, and could feed thousands more with it’s fertile delta soil. On December 1st, Nana will be hosting an evening discussion and dinner at the United Nations Church Center in NY** www.vamothers.org NANA FOSU-RANDALL

As 2011 draws to an end, COCO ECO revisits some of the non-profits and eco-centric organizations profiled over the last year in Take Action for updates, and to see what 2012 has in store. TOMS SHOES: Toms was already becoming a household name when featured in Coco Eco, but now with an eyewear collection and distribution in over 125 countries the organization has become a movement. This December, a group of employees from TOMS HQ in Santa Monica, the TOMS Korea office, and volunteers embarked on an adventure to Argentina to hand place new shoes on the feet of under privileged children. On April 5, 2011, TOMS hosted their 4th annual One Day Without Shoes challenging people worldwide to go a day without shoes to create awareness. Broadening their scope of good doing, TOMS Shoes is also an official sponsor for 2011 Movember, turning November into a moustache growing month for men around the world to create awareness for prostate cancer.

AMAZON WATCH continues to safeguard the rainforest and indigenous peoples that call it their home. Amazon Watch acts as a voice to people that otherwise do not have the resources to be heard on a global level. Since Coco Eco profiled Amazon Watch there have been many positive developments including a U.S court ruling against oil giant Chevron for the massive pollution of the Amazon rain forest incurred by the oil giant. It has been an 18-year legal battle that has gone before judges not just in Ecuador, but also in the United States and resulting in an 18 billion dollar fine against Chevron. The ruling serves as a major feat for Amazonian residents. CAUSECAST: Back in Issue 16, Coco Eco spoke with Ryan Scott founder and CEO of Los Angeles-based Causecast, a leader in cause-related marketing between corporations and non-profits has since launched a Wikipedia for brand philanthropy. The site allows corporations to set up a website listing it’s charitable involvement and providing links to the charities it supports. Corporate social responsibility has grown in the past two years as major brands realize the financial benefit by associating their brand with a positive cause. “[Brands] can’t go out and toot their own horn about this stuff, it doesn’t come off right but we still want to go and put that information out there,” stated Scott. “There is a viable way of doing direct marketing on the Internet that is also ethical.” The site will also include the company’s employee volunteer programs, sustainability initiatives and corporate donation matching programs. SEA SHEPHERD: Since Coco Eco first profiled Sea Shepherd for Issue 17, the organization has continued to vigorously defend marine wildlife. Sea Shepherd has long battled with Japan over whaling

Sea Shepherd will return to the remote waters for their 8th Antarctic Whale Defence Campaign. A stronger anti-whaling fleet will intervene in early December 2011 to protect the great whales. Captain Watson has stated ‘They will have to kill us to prevent us from intervening once again,’ begging the question, are the Japanese willing to trade human lives as well as the whale for financial gain? Previous attempts saved more than 800 whales. TEENS TURNING GREEN was profiled in Issue 18. Teens Turning Green was a movement created by teens for teens. Coco Eco caught up with founder Erin Schrode to see how the green movement has progressed amongst the next generation. “Project Green Challenge has been the greatest work in the history of our campaign. This October, we launched PGC, a 30-day eco lifestyle challenge that offered up simple, fun, and high impact steps each day to guide students in the transition from conventional to conscious. Our goal was to inspire a powerful collective of doers that could then reach peers and inspire change among the masses – and we have found tremendous success! Part of Schrode’s success can be credited not only to her dedication, passion, and drive but to her ability to connect with youth, as she is her campaign’s target demographic. Schrode went on to explain how innovative ideas of the next generation have pushed the Teens Turning Green movement to the next level “During Project Green Challenge, students poured heart, soul,

STING An inspirational partnership in marriage and charity, Sting and wife Trudie Styler founded the Rainforest Foundation FUND (formerly known as the Rainforest International) 22 years ago. It all began with a promise from Sting to help the Kayapo tribe obtain legal rights to their native land in the Amazon region of Brazil. They succeeded in 1992, establishing the independence and tribe ownership of their homeland. The organization moved forward and started new projects in other countries like Costa Rica, Guyana, Belize, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Indonesia. Sprouting branches in the UK, Norway, and US, the Rainforest FUND has reached indigenous groups in Africa, Asia, and throughout the Americas. On the 20th anniversary of the Rainforest FUND, Sting returned to Brazil to help the Kayapo tribe lift their voices and stop a second construction attempt of a dam near their land. The Rainforest FUND continues to provide funding for legal representation; health, civil, cultural, and women’s rights; clean water, and land preservation in support of the indigenous people. Celebrating the 25th year of his solo career, Sting is currently performing across North America in his “Back to Bass” tour. Sting also hosts multiple charity concerts with other artists from all over the world, where the proceeds benefit the Rainforest FUND – their main source of funding. AARON COHEN With special force, counterterrorist training and a giant heart… Aaron Cohen has worked for over a decade to end modern day slavery and human trafficking. His efforts began raising awareness with activists and politicians; but he quickly shifted his mission to “the real work on the ground of freeing slaves.” Cohen shares some of his experiences in his memoirs Slave Hunter, coauthored with Christine Buckley. Unsettled with thoughts of the victims they were unable to save, he continues fighting the war hands on. Cohen works with task forces and investigators worldwide to identify victims; and sometimes independently sets out on undercover missions to seek and rescue while exposing massive trafficking operations. Last we spoke with Cohen he had taken recent missions in the Himalayas of India in Central Asia, through the Middle East, and here in the United States. Cohen partners with organizations like AbolishSlavery.org and CATW International, offering rehabilitation and aide for many that were rescued over the years. His most recent efforts have been in Brasil, Mexico, and Haiti. Working with the Federal Police in Brasil, they are training human trafficking investigators and task forces to find Brasilian girls that have been sold in Europe and the United States. Meeting with Mother Antonia of Mexico and Baja First Lady Carolina Bustamente, they are planning special task force initiatives in Tijuana, which lead slaves into U.S. territory. “Following the trail of the victims from Tijuana to Las Vegas was an eye opening experience and we were able to identify a vast network, trafficking Latin girls to sin city. The last year has been difficult, but rewarding…and I can see that human trafficking is growing, probably much faster than any of us ever imagined.” ** www.abolishslavery.org

SIR RICHARD BRANSON Sir Richard Branson is best known for his Virgin Group of over 400 companies, including Virgin Records, Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic, and countless others. Virgin Group’s independent charitable arm, Virgin Unite, believes “business leaders have a strong responsibility to reinvest the money they make into creating new jobs, tackling tough problems facing society and our environment.” Virgin Atlantic launched a new human trafficking initiative this fall. Virgin is the first airline to work with the UK Border Agency to train their cabin crews, target suspicious behavior in passengers, and take effort in ending human trafficking. Virgin’s “fun’draising” campaigns this year also helped to provide clean water to over 7,500 people in Kenya. As of October 2011, Virgin Atlantic was the first airline in the world to create a low-carbon aviation fuel. Working with Lanza Technology, steel production waste gases are captured, fermented, and converted into jet fuel. These waste gases normally become carbon dioxide in the air we breathe, but can now power the skies. Currently in pilot mode in New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic hopes to use it on flights within Europe in the next few years making this the new standard for the airline industry. Working with Wild Aid, Virgin Unite is helping to save some of our endangered wildlife. In India, there are only 1,600 Tasmanian tigers remaining. Branson believes “We must help ensure that not one more inch of land is lost for the tigers and that people in local communities can always live in peaceful coexistence with this beautiful creature and prosper.” Virgin Unite is also focusing on shark fishing and fin trade with California’s Governor Jerry Brown and the Marshall Islands, hoping to expand efforts further into the pacific rim.** www.virginunite.com

WAYNE PACELLE Fighting for the furry and voiceless members of society, Wayne Pacelle is the CEO & President of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Merging and partnering with other animal protection organizations like The Fund for Animals, Pacelle has helped legislation initiatives affecting animals, like puppy mils, cockfighting, inhumane factory farming methods, and fur trade. In his best-selling book titled The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them, he compares the relationship between humans and animals from years ago to the present. Pacelle believes “we must sync up our commerce with our values. We can achieve a high quality of life and robust economic activity without leaving a trail of animal victims in the process.” His daily blog, A Humane Nation, chronicles the victories of Pacelle, the HSUS, and its affiliates while shedding light on more issues that require society’s attention and assistance. This past fall, HSUS recently called McDonald’s into the ring for their partnership with pork supplier, Smithfield Foods. Calling this initiative “McFib,” based off McDonald’s seasonal sandwich the “McRib.” The HSUS investigated the truth about the gestation crates in which Smithfield’s pigs are confined, with barely enough space to move. McDonald’s animal advisor, Ms. Temple Grandin, even suggested McDonald’s cut ties with an organization that practices this form of cruelty. The HSUS has recently worked with leaders in the egg industry to make legislation eliminating barren egg cages, saved thousands of animals from cruel environments, continues providing refuge for animals at its numerous sanctuaries, and the list goes on. Pacelle promises that “here at the HSUS, we will never back down from a tough fight.” ** www.humanesociety.org

JOHN PAUL DEJORIA
JOHN PAUL DEJORIA John Paul DeJoria provides an excellent example of a philanthropic leader. The story of his great success in establishing and expanding companies such as John Paul Mitchell Systems and Patron Spirits is well known. Early in his career he also established John Paul Pets, a pet care line whose proceeds go to various animal protection resources. Says DeJoria, “We support more shelters, more adoption programs, more animal cruelty free brands than any company that I know.” His belief is that “We have the privilege while we are alive of taking care of and preserving the entire planet. It’s part of our rent for being on the planet earth.” He also works extensively with the California Wildlife Association and the Sea Shepherd Society, Last Chance for Animals in addition to the World Wildlife Federation, the Humane Society, ASPCA and countless other organizations. DeJoria was awarded in early November with the 2011 UCLA Health System Humanitarian of Hope Award for his work with rock legends The Who for the launch of the UCLA Daltrey/Townsend Teen & Young Adult Cancer Program. The program is based on the efforts of the Teenage Cancer Trust and seeks to provide the best possible care and support for teens throughout the physical and emotional challenges of living with cancer. When Coco Eco asked John Paul about the program he explained, “They don’t feel like they have a community so if they have a place to hang out it makes the healing process so much better, healthier and easier.” The Who, DeJoria, and other supporters such as Robert Plant and the Foo FIghters hope to encourage the youth to continue living and enjoying life.** www.paulmitchell.com
DR. TONY FAUCI
TONY FAUCI Thirty years ago this spring, the first cases of HIV were reported in Los Angeles, appearing soon thereafter in New York and San Francisco. Dr. Anthony Fauci has been involved from the beginning of this pandemic and has made influential contributions to the way we understand and live with HIV and AIDS. He has fostered public awareness, worked tirelessly towards bettering the lives of those who are affected and continues to serve as one of the key advisors to the White House and Department of Health and Human Services on global AIDS issues. As Director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Fauci has played a significant role in defining the reality of those who live with the disease. In the early 80’s, Fauci and then U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop found their own budget and resources to distribute pamphlets to the public educating us on exactly how the virus could be spread. Under his vigilant watch for the last three decades, the average survival rate of affected patients has gone from a mere 26 weeks to an average of 50 years. ** www.niaid.nih.gov

INDULGE! MIRAJ HAMMAM SPA In centuries past, the Hammam was known as the silent doctor, and the steam and body exfoliation, an authentic Middle Eastern tradition. Nowadays, it’s a mini escape from the stresses and toxins of everyday life, and a gentle yet effective cleansing of body, mind and soul. After relaxing in a softly lit steam chamber, I laid on Jerusalem gold marble whilst an esthetician exfoliated my skin with black Moroccan soap. After a gentle misting, it was time for a 15 minute Oriental Massage, before reclining on a velvet bed with silk cushions, and enjoying traditional Middle Eastern tea and sweet cake. MIGHTY
Belo Monte WRITTEN by: Beth Doane PHOTOGRAPHY provided by: Amazon
Watch
The story of the Belo Monte dam is tragic, epic and catastrophic enough to draw attention from presidents, movie stars, billionaires, and millions of concerned human beings across the planet. It also mirrors the film Avatar so closely that even James Cameron flew into the depths of the Amazon to meet directly with the indigenous people this dam will affect. Despite the rising amount of negative international publicity for the project, the Brazilian government has announced they are moving ahead “at any cost” with the construction of the dam. They don’t realize just how great these costs will be for our future generations and our planet. The Belo Monte dam is set to become the thirdlargest dam in the world, constructed along the Xingu River in the state of Pará, Brazil. This dam complex dates back to Brazil’s military dictatorship and the government has attempted to build it through various series of national investment 106
programs over the years but this time it seems more real than ever. To create the dam, up to 80% of the Xingu River will be diverted from its original course, which means there will be a permanent and devastating drought on the river’s “Big Bend”, directly affecting the Paquiçamba and Arara territories of the Juruna and Arara indigenous peoples. Two huge canals 500 meters wide by 75 km long will be excavated, unearthing more land than was removed to build the Panama Canal, and the reservoirs and canals created for this dam will flood a total of 668 km2 , much of which is endangered tropical forest. The flooding will be so intense it will force more than 20,000 people from their homes and destroy their ability to hunt, farm, or use the earth they have depended on for millennia. So why is a project of this destructive able to come to life? Hydroelectric energy. This type of energy is now widely presented as a viable solution to Brazil’s increasing energy demands and is praised as a “clean energy development” and far safer approach for combating global climate change. However, Philip Fearnside of the National Amazon Research Institute (INPA) has calculated that the forests that will inevitably be flooded by Belo Monte’s reservoirs will generate enormous quantities of methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than CO2. Not exactly as clean or green as the clever marketing and PR campaigns supporting the dam would have us believe. Belo Monte will also bring approximately 100,000 migrants to the region, yet only 2,000 of the jobs created for those migrants will be long-term and sadly, just like with big oil extraction occurring within other areas of the Amazon, the remaining labor pool will be forced

to feed their families using means such as illegal logging and cattle ranching - two of the most severe causes of the mass deforestation plaguing these critical areas today. Another frightening side affect of the thousands of new migrants in the area is that social tensions are sure to rise as work becomes increasingly scarce, pushing these outsiders into indigenous territories and threatening tribal cultures and protected lands. The result of massive infrastructure of this nature is that indigenous communities suffer from contamination, disease, loss of their food supply, and access to safe water sources. There is also the risk of human rights abuses by illegal loggers, migrant workers, and land speculators which have also been witnessed for years through illegal oil exploration in neighboring countries. In truth, Belo Monte will be one of the most energy inefficient dams in the history of Brazil, producing only 10% of its 11,233 megawatt (MW) installed capacity during the 3-5 month-long dry season, an average of only 4,462 MW throughout the year, or 39% of its nominal capacity. Zoe Tryon, anthropologist, indigenous rights activist and ambassador to the non-profit Amazon Watch, which has worked tirelessly to halt the construction of the dam, stated recently in an interview with Coco Eco, “The construction of this dam is utterly heartbreaking. It will literally cause the extinction of the indigenous peoples living in the area, for they are so closely connected with their lands and this river that once they have been destroyed so has their culture and way of life.” Zoe also commented on how the dam does not make viable eco108
nomic sense, saying, “Twenty-five thousand people will be displaced in the building of the first dam, a six mile collision of modern industry with pristine, primary rainforest, and this is the Amazon, where the rivers are seasonal; they rise and fall with the rains. The people who live in this lush area are governed by the flows of nature, they read her signs and adapt to her, cultivating seasonal soils, and relying on the rivers fish for protein. Now this vast dam will come and block the river, flooding huge areas of alpha-diversity, which will be lost to all of us forever.” What’s so much worse and even ironic, Tryon added, “Instead of abandoning the project, the government intends to build up to 60 more dams upstream to try and keep the big dam going. Much of the energy will be going to support extractive industries in the region, particularly aluminum, rather than providing electricity for the people.” What will become of the Belo Monte project over the days, months or years that follow remains unknown, but it is clear that the more we continue to express our opinions and outrage through any means we can. As indigenous leader Sheyla Juruna states, “The government is not open to dialogue, so we will fight with our bodies and souls... to defend our lives and the life of our river.”**

EXCERPTS FROM THE
COVE DIARIES WRITTEN by: Leilani Munter PHOTOGRAPHY by: Leilani Munter
I am happy to report another day of peace at the cove. No blood was shed in these waters today. In fact, since Sept 7, the day they slaughtered the first pod of Risso’s dolphins - there has been no killing. They did capture of a large pod of bottlenose a few days ago, but they pulled one dolphin out for captivity and set the rest of the pod free. But the lack of killing around here is not for a lack of trying; the dolphin hunters have been going out every day except one when the weather would not allow it. They have been chasing pods each day, but day after day, the pods have either escaped or they have been unable to locate a pod at all. 110
I have settled into a routine here. Every morning my alarm goes off at 4.30am, I brush my teeth, grab a coffee, put my hair in a ponytail and I’m out the door by 4.45am. I meet the dolphin hunters at the Taiji Harbor at 5am. I use the word “meet” loosely. I sit in my rental car in a parking lot across the dock from the Taiji Fishermen’s Union, and watch from afar as they have their morning meeting filled with cigarettes before they set out to sea in their boats to search for dolphins. The police meet me there every day as well. They know me quite well by now, as I do them. I even know one particular English-speaking policemen’s shift schedule. And they know my schedule as well. That’s when you know you’ve spent some serious time in Taiji. One of the most amusing moments of this trip was when the police pulled me over for the first time, (for not using my blinker), and as they walked away, one of them said, “Welcome back.” That’s when you know you are a regular in Taiji! We are even starting to have deeper conversations with each other, thanks to their good English (I’m working on my Japanese). A couple days ago, one of the policemen asked me, “Do you fight for other animals, or just dolphins?” The more time I spend here, the more I am in awe of the beauty of this place, and the more I can see the potential of what it could be without the horrific dolphin slaughter. If only they would turn these dolphin-hunting boats into dolphin watching boats - like Izumi Ishiisan, a dolphin hunter in Futo who had an epiphany years ago when a dolphin he was killing looked into his eyes. Ishii-san immediately retired his hunting boat and now takes tourists on dolphin watching trips. With it’s beautiful shrines, waterfalls, turquoise waters and

incredible coastline, the juxtaposition of the horror of what happens here is difficult to grasp. This is my third trip here, and I know it won’t be my last. During this trip I experienced my first typhoon, which led to a very important lesson for me. For the first time in my life I had to live without clean water for several days. Living without access to water was an experience. I will never forget finding out there was no water in our hotel and going to the grocery store thinking I could buy some and then seeing all the shelves for water completely bare. Beyond drinking water, there was no water for the shower, sink, or toilet. It was an important lesson for me, and one I don’t think I could fully understand without having this experience. I will never take for granted the ability to take a shower, wash my hands or flush a toilet ever again. You truly appreciate the simple comforts in life. Yesterday I had my first ice cube in two weeks and I must say, it was a treat. When the owner of my hotel gave me a small bucket of ice, I felt like she was giving me a bucket of gold. I now understand water stress in a way in which I never could before. Over 1.1 billion people who share our planet live in water stress every day. I was lucky I only had to go through it for a few days. There is no better way to understand an issue than to live through it yourself.
On a more personal note, I am also grateful for my husband, who arrived at our home today from New Zealand after six months away, and because I decided to stay here with the dolphins in Taiji, I wasn’t there to welcome him home. I’m so glad that he loves the dolphins as much as I do. I was scheduled to return to the USA a few days ago but I have extended my trip. Something changes in you when you come to Taiji. It started happening on my first trip here last year. It’s hard to leave because you begin to feel a responsibility to the dolphins, to make sure their lives their lives (and deaths) are recorded so that the world remembers them and hopefully change will come. 111

LESSONS FROM
Fukushima WRITTEN by: Johanna Björk, PHOTOGRAPHY by: As Noted
Goodlifer.com
On March 11, 2011, following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, the reactors at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant were flooded by a 49-foot tsunami wave. The plant lost of power and the reactors began overheating as the cooling systems stopped working. In the days that followed, the the plant experienced a full nuclear meltdown. What happened at Fukushima was the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The question now is not how we could have prevented this, because no matter how hard we try we can’t go back in time. Instead, we should ask ourselves what can be done to prevent something like this from ever happening again. Before Fukushima I, an avid environmentalist, was not entirely opposed to nuclear power. Despite growing up during the aftermath of Chernobyl, nuclear seemed like the least of the dirty power 112
evils. As long as it works like it’s supposed to, maybe that is true. But, when something goes wrong in a nuclear plant, it goes horribly wrong. Fukushima reminded us of this. After the disaster in Japan, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, who owns and operates Fukushima, and the Japanese government were hard at work doing damage control. Trying to prevent a PR-disaster while working to minimize the damage to people and the environment is not easy, and the public often felt that they were not given enough information. It’s only recently that a full picture of Fukushima’s fallout has begun to emerge. On August 30th of this year, the Japanese science ministry released a map showing contamination over a 100-kilometer radius around the plant. On the day of the accident, the government evacuated people within a 3-kilometer radius of the plant. On the second day, the evacutation-zone was expanded to a 20-kilometer radius. Late in March, residents within a 30-kilometer radius were told to prepare to evacuate and even though it was not mandated most did so. This area still is much smaller than that which the report showed was contaminated. People rarely want to leave their homes, but when lives are at stake wouldn’t it be better to be safe than sorry? Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has also published new estimates of the total radiation released in the accident. These figures, reported to the International Atomic Energy Agency in June, suggest that the total airborne release of caesium-137 amounts to 17 percent of the release from Chernobyl. The government estimates that the total radiation released is five or six percent of that from Chernobyl. This is good, but still bad. What about the oceans? They are already so jam-packed with toxins

that eating fish seems like a death-defying action. A study by Ken Buesseler, a marine chemist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found that about two weeks after the earthquake, the plant released radioactive cesium into nearby waters to create levels that were one million times greater than they had been before the accident. By May, however, concentrations had fallen to about ten thousand times greater than normal, and remained constant through July. Still, based on the total amount of radioactive material released, the meltdown at Fukushima ranks as the largest accidental radioactivity release into ocean waters ever. It is second only to nuclear tests performed in the 1960s, but those count as voluntary releases. Experts cannot agree on whether these levels are higher than the safety threshold for humans and remain unsure about the long-term health effects of exposures due to the accumulation of radioactive material in seafood and ocean sediments. It would seem wise for us to be careful about consuming fish and sea vegetables from those parts of the world for a while. So what are the options? In the U.S. today, we have 104 working nuclear plants. Most of them were built in the 1970s or earlier. The good news is that as nuclear power’s reputation has become tarnished there are not many new ones are being built. The bad news is that the existing ones are starting to get old (which, in the nuclear world means “more dangerous”). The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced it will launch a comprehensive safety review of all the existing nuclear reactors across the United States, at the request of President Obama. The current administration, however, “continues to support the expansion of nuclear power in the United States, despite the crisis in Japan.”
Governor Peter Shumlin, who was recently awarded Beautiful Earth Group and Opportunity Green’s Green Governor of the Year Award PHOTO CREDIT: flickr.com/photos/vermontgovernor
According to a CBS news poll, public support for nuclear power in the U.S. is now at 43 percent, just a bit lower than it was immediately following the Three Mile Island accident in 1979. One survey found that 64 percent of Americans oppose the construction of new reactors, while another (conveniently sponsored by the Nuclear Energy Institute) found that 62 percent of Americans favor nuclear power as energy source and 35 percent are opposed. In Vermont, the only state that gives its Legislature authority to make decisions about nuclear plants, the Yankee Nuclear Plant is set to close in 2012 following a refusal to extend its 40-year operational license issued in 1972. Under the leadership of Governor Peter Shumlin, the state of Vermont fought, and ultimately won, a bitter battle against the owners of the plant, Entergy Corp. Despite reports indicating the opposite, Entergy insists that the plant is completely safe and reliable. Governor Shumlin says that he has made sure the citizens of his state know that for every dirty job he takes away, several green ones are created. There is enough clean, green technology out there today that we should not have to risk the health of ourselves and the environment to power our lives. By moving away from nuclear power, Vermont is on to a good start. Let’s hope the rest of the country follows suit.**

ATTITUTE
Adjustment WRITTEN by: Kelly Gallagher PHOTOGRAPHY by: As Noted
....It’s 2011. I’m tired. Look at the gas prices? Are we done yet? Nope. I have 14372 emails in gmail. I can’t believe I got dropped by Blue Cross. The Holidays are here again. We know this because the Christmas decorations went up on Labor Day weekend this year instead of Halloween. I have no money for Christmas. He dumped me. Banks. Wall Street. Health care. Theoretically the end of the world could have been October 28th,the end Mayan Calendar you know? Retail wasn’t taking a chance on missing out on any potential dollar, I mean shopping, days. I really wish I had lost weight before I was going to see everyone. Who is going to be there? I just want to meet the man or woman of my dreams. Why do they always serve food that makes you look like a pig while you’re eating it? “Bitter party of one. “ Okay. MIND! STOP! This is what I’m talking about; the non-stop chatter inside our heads. I don’t know about you but I could benefit from a year-end attitude adjustment. Every year we make ourselves the same promises about the same things and set ourselves up for the same failures, that drive the same self -esteem issues. Are we ready for a change in this next new year? The old saying “You can’t fix a problem with the same mind that created it” is still true. So why not set out this Holiday Season with 114

a winning strategy? And when I say “winning”, I mean setting achievable goals so that your mind and psyche register a win? What if we could get a grip on those chocolate covered candies and set attainable goals, and year-end promises before Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas or Kwanza occur? Even if you are super organized and disciplined there is always some nagging goal we always promise ourselves but rarely achieve. Quit smoking? Lose 5 lbs? No more coffee? No way. What if we could start our new beginnings now on a day other than January 1st? What if we could substitute healthy behaviors for negative ones? For those in search of true health and wellness, clearing the body, mind and spirit of all things negative is a process much like peeling an onion... ADJUSTMENT 1: THE COMMITMENT TO GET SELF CENTERED It’s time to.... Re-generate my passion Re-mind myself of who I am and what I stand for Re-focus my goals Re-commit to my truth Re-place old actions and behaviors with new ones It seems like the clock just starts to speed up in the fall and zooms to the end of the year like a racehorse to the barn. This year has been a big year for controversy and change. For many of us, the economic crisis, healthcare issues, falling credit ratings and globalization have strained our wallets, hearts, and relationships. We have been witness to war, extreme weather, catastrophe’s and numerous violations against humanity. It’s almost 2012. So as we enter the holiday season and the end of the calendar year, and not just any
calendar year, we have to stay mindful if we want to stay healthy and happy. That means different things to different cultures. But no matter who you are or where you are from it is a perfect time to stop, take a breath, figure out what we, as individuals, are grateful for, and choose our life with purpose. ADJUSTMENT 2: Choose our life with purpose Design your dream other wise you could be living someone else’s nightmare For some that thought might be like lighting a candle in a hurricane. The holidays bring joy to many and anxiety to others. Racing around, over committed, filled with mixed emotions getting ready for family gatherings and office parties. The holidays, where happy times, shopping lists, melancholy memories, party invitations, no party invitations, money issues, wardrobe choices and too much food, all collide. What do you do when faced with all those tempting delicacies everywhere you turn? ADJUSTMENT 3: Note to self. The body is my temple. Emotional eating not allowed this season. The desire to make everyone happy can leave us feeling depleted and burned out. It’s important to remember to take time for ourselves. ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT | Continued
PHOTO CREDIT: Aerial Artist and Photographer - John Quigley ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT | Continued
ADJUSTMENT 4: Take time for ourselves Get a massage, get quiet and make a list of what’s important to you before you make all those shopping lists and party lists. Personal goal achievement is what makes us happy. If we are happy with ourselves we generally make other people happy. While the numerous prophecies and predictions would have us believe it’s the end of the world, it seems like the beginning of a new more hectic world where we are constantly expected to learn the new app of the day while we tackle “iLife” issues on our computers, iPads, and iPhones. We sort through the paper bills and hope our online banking isn’t bouncing us into oblivion, while multiple email accounts fill up with webinars and discounted offers from Groupon and Living Social, every three minutes. Where else could I get four pole dancing classes for 50 bucks? A great stocking stuffer. Our holiday cards are now electronic. Everyone on facebook to dragon voice software is collecting our contact lists and personal information for every bit of “metrics” they can snag. And yes, it’s all legal and written in the fine print we no longer have time to read. What are they going to do with all that information they collect when everyone has the same information? Whatever. Now it’s time for gift116
wrapping the presents I wasn’t supposed to buy. ADJUSTMENT 5: Breathe. Oh and wait. The victim-laden childhood memories that flood in ruining the present by keeping us living in the past have got to go too. As Cher said in Moonstruck, “Snap out of it.” Unfortunately, our grandparents die, our parents die, tragedy occurs. The only thing in life that is certain is death and taxes. That’s what happens in this thing called life. We have a choice about the way we feel. Our parents did the best they could too. They were probably drinking too much just like we all do sometimes. However, eventually, if you are not focused on your own goal list, you can end up in the middle of a self-indulgent chocoholic binge that can overcome even the most disciplined of holiday shoppers. Sometimes all it takes is the Ave Maria or Jingle Bells playing in the background to send me into a self-indulgent bout of tears. ADJUSTMENT 6: I cry. And then I’m better. Up and out. So how do we keep grounded with so many things to do as the planet spins towards Christmas and 2012? How do we choose peace instead of holiday frenzy while we are faced with all these numerous choices in a down economy? I have been asking myself all these questions as I usually start panicking when the pumpkins come out in October, knowing that the end of the year is upon me, and the list of goals I made last year is incomplete. I have to remind myself to breathe. And then to breathe again. To make it worse, New Year’s Eve is my birthday so I put extra pressure on myself to fix everything that was broken in myself the previous year. No snickers from my friends and family please. As a Goddess in Progress, I can only hope to live each year better than the last. ADJUSTMENT 7: I force myself go to yoga and meditation in between parties and eating, and I promise myself I am not going to get caught

up in the crass commercialization of this Holiday Season. I vow not to buy lots of useless presents for everyone I know, and remember back to my childhood days when the Nuns at Catholic School used to scold us for our excesses reminded us that we are celebrating the birth of Christ, not shopping. “However, please feel free to put your donation in the gift basket.” Sorry God. Bless me Father for I have... So in between the barrage of TV ads, Christmas music and thoughts of Nuns, eating and not shopping, this time instead of indulging and being filled with remorse, I got on a plane with my friends and went to Alaska to finish a longtime goal of writing two books, and starting a third. ADJUSTMENT 8: These items have been on my rotating goal list for quite sometime so I figured it was time to start crossing them off my list, and add items to my grateful list. ADJUSTMENT 9: I’m a five-time cancer survivor. I’m grateful. The biggest gift I can give anyone is the lessons that I have learned along the way. YEAR END REMINDERS I want to make every year better than the last year. Keep making grateful lists. Keep focused on the goals. We are zooming towards 2012. Is it the end of the world? I don’t think so. I think times are changing. It is the time of ascension, purification, clarity, peace, prosperity and oneness. When in doubt, remember Organic is in. Toxic is out. For the skinny bitches, it’s
not about dieting and starving to stay thin; it’s about lifestyle management and nutritious living: a thing of the present. Every minute is a choice. Remind self again that The Holidays are a time of joy, a time of giving, and a time of sharing with our friends and family. Change your mind. Adjust your attitude. It’s time to take charge of the past by living in the present. Happy Holidays. ** From ‘UGOTTAWANNA” a book in progress www.Ugottawanna.org
