LETTER TO YOU At the start of the year when forecasting the magazine’s content for 2013, BE LIKE WATER was born as the summer issue that would highlight some of the critical water issues facing our planet. It was also an irreverent nod to Bruce Lee and one of my favorite quotes eloquently surmised in the words, “Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend,” and my personal desire to learn to go with the flow a little more. Little did I know some of the life changes that were upon me this year, and the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual agility I was capable of. At times during the last few months, I have had to remind myself to “be water,” and have found myself wondering if life is in fact imitating art? As usual, this is a very special issue. They all are, but with each one comes its own unique journey from conception to delivery. BE LIKE WATER sees a rush of new and brilliant talent bringing their voices to COCO ECO, and we welcome amazing writers and artists from all over the globe including Sao Paolo, Milan, San Francisco and London. In addition, we are thrilled to welcome two incredible Celebrity Editors; amazing and brilliant women whom are both on exciting life journeys. Lovely past cover girl, Nia Peeples graces our pages with her inspiring LIKE WATER FOR LIFE article, and our gorgeous cover girl, Ashlan Gorse shares her account of diving with Great Whites, IN THE EYE OF THE BEAST.
Malibu at the stunning LEED Certified home of Shalane and James Respondek. It was an effortless and happy shoot, with a great crew and an awesome cover girl who was game for pretty much anything. Ashlan is the perfect face for a water issue with her current concern about sharks, and impending nuptials to Philippe Cousteau. I am thrilled with the results, shot beautifully by Russell Baer. In Fashion, we celebrate a quintessential day at the beach in CALIFORNIA DREAMING, as shot by talented photographer, Jen Rosenstein. Beauty gets sultry with ISLAND NIGHTS, and travel takes us on an eco chic tour of Marrakech, and to a retreat in the Algarve, Portugal. We’re also thrilled to feature Jason Mraz, Philippe Cousteau and Rob Machodo amongst others, in MEN WE LOVE. These guys are all engaged in fighting for a better world, passionately crusading on their own water campaigns. We hope you enjoy this issue, and have an amazing summer. In the words of the late, great Bruce Lee, and however it occurs for you . . . BE LIKE WATER! Anna.
Speaking of our cover shoot, we had an incredible day in

Throughout history, the ocean has played an important role as a major source of sustenance for many peoples around the world, and has also been used for transport to further commerce and growth.
Fashion is often accused of being all about the surface, ignoring what lies beneath. The same thing can be said for our oceans and waterways. What we see when admiring a gorgeous sunset over the Pacific Ocean or enjoy a cup of morning coffee by a crystal clear lake is, literally, only the surface. About 70% of the earth’s surface is water, and the deepest point in the ocean (the Mariana Trench) is taller

than the highest mountain. There’s a lot going on beneath that surface. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) “the ocean is the lifeblood of Earth, driving weather, regulating temperature, and ultimately supporting all living organisms.” Throughout history, the ocean has played an important role as a major source of sustenance for many peoples around the world, and has also been used for transport to further commerce and growth. “Yet for all of our reliance on the ocean,” the NOAA states, “95 percent of this realm remains unexplored, unseen by human eyes.” We actually know very little about what goes on in those deep waters, which should give us even more reason to protect them. Fashion has not been kind to

ECO SWIM BY AQUA GREEN Based in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, Eco Swim by Aqua Green is a 4th generation family company with a strong community-focus. Although the company has grown significantly, selling internationally, they still design, fit, source, cut and sew right in Philadelphia. About five years ago, an internal green team was formed, initiating changes focused on innovation, well-being and sustainability. Some of these initiatives included simple changes such as a corporate ban on purchases of styrofoam, recycling of all paper, plastics, light bulbs and color cartridges. More complicated efforts include sustainable fabric initiatives with long term fabric suppliers.
UNITED BY BLUE The brand’s founder, Brian Linton, always had a strong bond to the ocean and its dwellers. In 2006, he decided to turn this passion into a business and started a company that sold a line of sustainably made jewelry and donated a percentage of profits to ocean conservation initiatives. He quickly grew frustrated, however, at not being able to see the results of these efforts first-hand and be sure that these donations were actually making a difference. So, in 2010, he started United By Blue (UBB), and decided to make hands-on-action an important part of the company’s mission. For every product sold, UBB will remove one pound of trash from our oceans and waterways. To do this, the company does not rely on third-party NGOs, opting to organize their own beach cleanups instead. “Not only does the UBB business model enable us to be the catalyst for real conservation efforts,” the company states, “it also allows us to develop a fun, engaging, and communityfocused brand. Our cleanups are the bedrock of our company,
50

and allow us to engage with thousands of volunteers and inspire participation in the blue movement.” UBB’s designs are inspired by Linton’s own explorations growing up abroad and by that moment of discovering something forgotten. The nautical color scheme calls to mind weathered buildings in harbor towns, and secret hideaway spots, in places near or far. Many of the brand’s (organic, of course) tees feature subtle messages to be worn proudly in support of the cause. UBB is a Certified B-Corporation and recently introduced a product recycling program that allows customers to send their worn merchandise back and get money back. The actual dollar amount that you would get when sending something back is (cleverly) printed somewhere on the piece. The name — United By Blue — alludes to the fact that we are all somehow united by the world’s oceans, whether we realize it or not. This fact makes it all the more important to rediscover and restore this valuable resource, necessary to sustain life on earth.

“When our great grandfather started this company 72 years ago, the oceans and beaches were cleaner places,” say Samantha and Alex, the current owners. “Four generations later, in a world with polluted water and dirty beaches, Eco Swim by Aqua Green is answering a call to restore our oceans’ health. By making our swimsuits in the US and using fabrics made from recycled materials, we are reducing our carbon footprint in the sand so that our beaches can be enjoyed by the next four generations.” Eco Swim uses a brand of fabrics called Repreve, made from 100% recycled materials such as PET and nylon. Using these recycled synthetic fibers helps keep plastics that would otherwise have been discarded out of landfills and oceans. It also helps conserve precious natural resources, as well as on manufacturing and shipping. By making their swimwear in the US and sourcing locally, the company says that they save over 96% fossil fuel. Since the collection launched in 2012, Eco Swim and the brand’s nationwide retailers have removed four tons of trash from our oceans and waterways through the incredible volunteerism and responsible corporate partnerships with our retailers. The company is a member of The Oceanic Society, a nonprofit conservation organization that works toward protecting
endangered wildlife and preserving threatened marine habitats worldwide. Eco Swim has also partnered with United By Blue (see above) to host several cleanups and remove over 3,000 pounds of trash from oceans and waterways. Eco Swim demonstrates a strong commitment toward material innovation, trying out the newest sustainable fibers and bringing them to market quickly. Just this year, the brand incorporated two new sustainable fibers — made from coffee and corn — into their collection. “The absolute best thing about using these new fibers, including Repreve recycled plastic fibers,” the brand states, “is that as a manufacturer we would choose to use them anyway due to their excellent performance and benefits. Each time we choose a new, more sustainable fabric, we make sure the quality is equal to if not better than conventional swimwear fabrics. The next best thing about using corn and coffee fibers is that they come from renewable sources. We work with our supply chain to make sure that not only their end use but whole supply chain is done in a more earth friendly manner.” Eco Swim’s collection ranges from sexy and cute to sporty and practical, ensuring there is something that suits everyone’s taste. What all the pieces have in common is that they will make you feel great about looking great on the beach — something every ecofashionista will appreciate.

island beauty at Home WRITTEN BY: Brandie Gilliam of Organic Beauty Talk PHOTOGRAPHY BY: Kelsey Foster
For most of us, hearing the word “islands” evokes thoughts of a much-needed vacation, clear blue waters, palm trees, cabanas, tropical fruits and relaxation. (Just in writing this first sentence, I’m compelled to check travel deals to some exotic destination.) There is an unparalleled beauty that comes with looking out over a vast ocean or watching the rhythm and motion of the waves as they come to shore, roll back out and repeat their oceanic dance. The following DIY recipes are reminiscent of the islands and full of ingredients that are tropical, fresh, fruity and floral in nature. They will have your senses at the beach with the sand under your feet and your skin feeling refreshed and glowing. Even more, they’re easy to do (yes, even the non-DIYer can make them), filled with items that are easily accessible (you probably have most of them in your kitchen) and low in cost. No blenders, food processors, expensive gadgets, waste or exotic formulations that leave you feeling confused and overwhelmed. Effective beauty doesn’t always have to mean complexity. Many of the best things in life are uncomplicated. So put a brightly colored sarong on and let’s get ready to bring the beauty and simplicity of the islands home!

CITRUS BODY SCRUB
COCONUT HONEY FACE SCRUB/MASK
1/3 cup pure fine sea salt 1 tbsp organic extra virgin coconut oil 2 tbsp organic extra virgin olive oil ½ organic lemon, ½ organic lime and ¼ organic orange
I tbsp organic raw honey ½ tsp organic shredded coconut flakes
Benefits: Sloughs off dead skin, leaving it smooth, moisturized and soft to the touch. Directions: Start by placing sea salt in a small glass bowl or wide mouth jar. Add coconut oil and olive oil and mix together until smooth. Add a few squeezes of fresh fruit for desired amount and stir. If you don’t have coconut oil around, use all olive oil and you can always swap a couple of drops of organic essential oils in place of the fresh fruit juice for larger batches to keep longer. FLORAL FACIAL STEAM 2 tbsp Mountain Rose Herbs Facial Steam (organic comfrey leaf, chamomile flowers, organic rose petals, organic calendula flowers and organic sweet orange essential oil) Benefits: Deep pore cleansing, restoration and skin vitality. Directions: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Place hot water in bowl and add herbal flowers. Allow herbal flowers to sit in water for a minute or two. Drape towel over your head and place clean face directly over facial steam bowl with eyes closed for about 10 minutes. Rinse face and apply scrub or mask. 66
| COCO ECO MAGAZINE | July/August 2013
Benefits: Exfoliates, purifies and hydrates skin. Directions: Pour honey into a small bowl, add coconut flakes and stir. Gently apply to clean dry skin in circular motions as a scrub and then rinse. As a mask, leave on clean dry skin for 10-15 minutes and then rinse. You can also substitute the coconut flakes for organic corn meal. If you don’t have any organic raw honey nearby and don’t want to order it online then go for local pure raw honey. • For all ingredients, shop your local grocery store (Whole
Foods, Trader Joe’s, Central Market, Sprouts), health food store, farmer’s market or online at shops like MountainRoseHerbs.com or Vitacost.com. • Support businesses that are doing the right things. I’ve found that buying the store’s private label organic brand or shopping online provides great savings on all of the oils, honey and coconut flakes. • For jars and mist bottles, recycle empty containers from some of your favorite products that you’ve purchased and used. Remove the labels and make your own or simply leave them plain. • Don’t forget to have fun and play with the ingredients. The idea behind these recipes is to show you just how easy and inexpensive DIY beauty really can be.

BEAUTY SPECIAL:
DONALD SIMROCK FOR MINX WRITTEN BY: Leilah Mundt
It’s official- nail art is more than just a passing fad. Both women and men have embraced this unexpected trend as a form of expression and, let’s face it, pure fun. Many a blog and hash tag are dedicated to our adventures in nail design, and celebrities like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna inspire the masses with their rock-star interpretations from nail art company, Minx. Created by Dawn Lynch-Goodwin and Janice Jordan, who left their careers and spent years developing Minx, the line features hundreds of fashion forward designs professionally applied by heat and pressure. The brand launched in 2007 with a custom collection for the then relatively unknown Lady Gaga, and a red carpet appearance on the one and only Beyonce. Minx’s latest collection, “Sextet”, is a magic collaboration with makeup artist, Donald Simrock, who’s celebrity clientele reads like a Grammy after party and includes legends such as Lady Gaga, Pink, Nicki Minaj, Madonna and Brittany Spears. Donald brings a bold, rock star aesthetic to the already edgy products. Music Icon Shirley Manson commented, “What I love about Donald is that he understands beautiful things 70

are much more interesting when they are also unique. He brought this esthetic to work with his nail designs for Minx, which are definitely eye-catching and unusually gorgeous!” Donald is no stranger to the rock-fashion scene. His work began in the European and New York nightclubs, and has proven to be an aesthetic that is both special and in high demand. “I photographed the entire collection in the moment that I was inspired, and specifically with this project in mind,” confided Donald. “I really wanted to start with Minx using photographs. I tried to offer an urban view to the more natural elements, and a colorful, artistic view to the more industrial styles. I have started off with a collection of six patterns… And I’m really excited to see where we go from here!!” So are we. For a Minx manicure, go to www.minxnails.com and look up a stylist near you.

ANTIPODES: ORGANIC BEAUTY MEETS SCIENCE, ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE EARTH 72
| COCO ECO MAGAZINE | July/August 2013
www.cocoecomag.com
Antipodes, the name alone evokes an ancient curiosity. Translated, Antipodes means opposite place on earth. Founder, Elizabeth Barbalich, came up with the name as a nod to the Australian and New Zealand based ingredients. I had to dig a little deeper to find out what made this New Zealand based green beauty company an international success. In the land of organic and green beauty, Antipodes is a super-star. They have broken through the “glass ceiling” of the beauty industry, standing proudly on the shelves next to some of the biggest mainstream brands in the world. With product names like “Hallelujah,” “Resurrect,” and “Reincarnation,” Antipodes has elevated the everyday skincare regime to a cathartic experience. When applying a generous dose of Antipodes products, one might question how they could possibly be 100% natural, and certified organic. Antipodes’ elegant collection of cleansers, serums, and creams glide across the skin with ease, not to mention, they smell absolutely heavenly. The packaging is effortless, represented simply by chic glass bottles, aluminum tubes, and tins, all with their own poetic names. Not surprisingly, the ingredient deck for Antipodes is as rare as it is impressive. Manuka, totara, kowhai and mamaku black fern are native to New Zealand and offer a powerhouse of nutrients to the skin. Antipodes has sourced potent skin-enhancing ingredients from around the world, like the vibrant Himalayan goji berry, South America’s wrinkle-reducing jojoba, Australia’s deeply moisturizing macadamia nut oil, and China’s Reishi mushroom of immortality. Their standards are high when it comes to packaging these rare and special ingredients. They use zero parabens, synthetic fillers, petrochemicals, artificial dyes, fragrance, mineral oil, or genetically modified ingredients. They also have a strict policy against animal testing of any kind. Then there are the results, backed by science and in-vitro studies; these products pack a major anti-aging punch. Each and every ingredient in the Antipodes line is subject to rigorous testing. The sustainably cultivated plant extracts not only have to be certified organic or genuinely natural, they must also be effective. As a result of this commitment to science, several of Antipodes key products are scientifically shown to significantly promote the production of Type I collagen, Type III collagen, and elastin at a cellular level. With the promise of results-oriented, scientifically proven, sustainable beauty products, it’s easy to see why Antipodes has developed a cult following and received numerous awards. In a time when science and organic skincare seem to play for opposite teams, Antipodes is bridging the gap with organic products that work wonders created on the opposite side of the earth.

“One of the things that grips me the most is that the ocean provides the main protein source for 1.2 billion people on this planet, so if the ocean ecosystem is messed up . . . people aren’t going to have food.” Whilst talking about the shoot, she discussed her exciting news with us; that she was to become the next Mrs. Philippe Cousteau. Effusively sharing how they met, the romantic proposal in Paris and future dreams together as a couple, I wondered if marrying into the legacy of a family such as the Cousteau’s might be a little daunting? But Ashlan, a downto-earth girl who exhibits an infectious zest for life’s great adventure, is of course taking it all in her stride. Having left her role as E! Entertainment’s Newsanchor, she is turning an exciting corner taking her away from the glitz and glam of Hollywood, on an incredible journey to exotic locales around the world, assisting endangered species as she goes. Her current concern is the decimation of the world’s shark population, which are being savagely caught and de-finned at an accelerated rate, to feed an increasing demand for shark fin soup. During our interview she shared her recent experience diving with Great Whites, and why education is crucial to re-address our perception of these extremely misunderstood pre-historic creatures.

COCO ECO MAGAZINE: Ashlan, what made you want to come and shoot with us today? ASHLAN GORSE: Well the reason why I wanted to this photo shoot was because of you and your magazine, and what you do. Seriously, when you think about the ecoconscious initiative, a lot of times people get in their mind a certain vision of a person. You know, it’s like someone who looks like a hippie, who maybe shops at Whole Foods, wears bad deodorant . . . CEM: I call it the hairy armpit, sandal and Patchouli brigade, but it’s not like that anymore. AG: Yes. And I think that through magazines like yours and these great companies who are actually coming out with good luxury items that are also environmentally conscious, you can still be a fashionista. You can still wear good make-up and smelling lotions, and it’s good for you and for the Earth. I’m so excited that this is where the mission has taken itself, so that’s why I wanted to be involved with this. I always say I was a “light green” person before I met my fiancé, but him introducing me to things in the world I wasn’t aware of, has made me more of a conscious consumer. CEM: Well you can be conscious, and still have a great life and be fashionable. There are no compromises anymore. AG: My skin is healthier and my hair is healthier. I have a really cool eco-focused car that’s really fast. It’s a BMW. You can still do things the way you want to do, and make a difference. Philippe always says, “Everything you do makes a difference. It’s your decision what kind of difference that is.” It’s true. Everything we do has a good consequence or a bad consequence, so let’s pick the good consequences.

CEM: So let’s back up. Philippe? AG: Philippe Cousteau is my fiancé, and we’re getting married at the end of September, at a chateau right outside of Paris. We’re very excited about it because of his FrenchAmerican heritage, and he proposed to me in Paris so we thought why not? We’re keeping it small and intimate. I have to pinch myself. My fiancé is Prince Charming, and I always thought that wasn’t in existence but it is. He’s really smart, he’s fun, he’s tall, he’s hot, and he saves the world. That’s his job. I still can’t believe it, but he is the best man besides my Father, that I have ever met. CEM: Amazing. Were you daunted coming into a relationship with a man with that kind of legacy, when you were “light green?” Has he helped guide you as you learn more about what’s going on in the world? AG: I’ve always been a conscious person. I recycled, I adopted my dog and thought I was aware of the environment, but it wasn’t until Philippe and I started dating that I realized I wasn’t looking at everything I should be. One of the best things about Philippe is he doesn’t preach to people. He would just do certain things like look at my shampoo bottle, and ask me, “Do you know there are sulfates in your shampoo bottle?” And I didn’t know what a sulfate was. Things like that I didn’t think of. I thought I was doing something good by buying something in a recycled bottle without thinking about what was in the bottle. CEM: What are some of the projects Philippe’s involved with at his non-profit, Earth Echo, which have inspired you?
Sweater, C Z Falconer, www.pinklagoon.com; Tahitian pearl necklace, Andrea Gutierrez wwwandreagutierrezjewelry.com; Leather embellished cuff, Calleen Cordero, www.calleencordero.com
AG: I love that his main goal is to educate children because the world is what it is, and they are adopting a legacy of this planet as it is with a lot of problems. We can’t really solve them. The nex t generation are the ones that have to solve it, and it’s made me think about how we need to educate children in a different way. He’s also opened my eyes to what is going on in the ocean. Ocean cer tif ication was something I had never really heard of until Philippe and I star ted talking and went diving together. One of the things that grips me the most is that the ocean provides the main protein source for 1.2 billion people on this planet, so if the ocean eco-system is messed up (which let’s be honest it is), and if it star ts to have these disastrous consequences of f isheries collapsing, people aren’t going to have food. There’s a big problem with overf ishing right now, and the water’s not clean. I think that people forget that even if they don’t care about
the environment or animals and only care about themselves, that’s f ine but think about not being able to feed our selves or drink clean water. Ever y thing is connected. CEM: I know that one of your latest concerns are sharks. AG: Yes. I always wanted to go Great White diving. I don’t know why but I’ve always thought it sounded amazing. When I met Philippe, he asked if I had ever gone scuba diving which I hadn’t, so I went and got certified and had this amazing underwater experience. Anyone who has never gone diving, you have to do it. It’s a whole different planet down there. So Philippe asked me what I wanted to do for my thirtieth birthday and I said I wanted to do a shark dive, and about a year and a half later, we finally got to go. I love animals, and what is the most feared animal on the planet? The Great White, but going down there with these magical creatures, they’re just beautiful and they’re huge! I’m a giant person and for me to feel like a miniscule blip swimming next to an 18ft Great White, was just absolutely breath-taking. CEM: They’re completely misunderstood. AG: Yes. We only had seven fatalities worldwide last year, by shark bite. More people get killed by vending machines falling on them, literally, than by sharks. So it was so interesting to see these “beasts” in their own world, and they are not beasts, and to think we kill 70-100 million sharks a year, really changed my respect for them and of the ocean. They are the apex predator and help keep the oceans healthy. Like I said before, 1.2 billion people depend on the ocean for food, so if we keep killing off these predators the whole eco-system will go out of whack, and people aren’t going to be able to eat. CEM: Tell us why so many are being killed. AG: One of the main reasons is that people are afraid of them, but another is shark finning. It’s a practice that is still legal although a lot of countries are trying to outlaw it. In Asian countries shark fin soup is still considered a delicacy, even though shark fins are actually made out of cartilage and have absolutely no taste. They flavor the soup with chicken broth! Sharks are dinosaurs. They are the oldest species. What can we learn from them?

“You can still wear good make-up and smelling lotions, and it’s good for you and for the Earth.”
CEM: What are some of the things you are doing about this? AG: It’s about education and teaching other cultures and the youth about the ocean. One of the reasons there has been this huge hunger for certain things that are endangered, is because China has never really had a middle-class and Shark Fin Soup was reserved for the wealthy. Now that there is a middle class, more people can afford it and want it. So it’s about educating them and the younger generation that this isn’t what we should be doing, and that we need to save not only these animals, but also save ourselves. CEM: Do you think there’s a tipping point happening? AG: Absolutely. I think there’s a tipping point happening with a lot of things. The pendulum can only go so far before it starts swinging back in the right direction. Education is key. CEM: We know Philippe is on CNN and you just left E!. Is there perhaps a potential “Ashlan & Philippe following-sharksaround-the-world” TV show in the making? AG: I hope so. Philippe and I have been kicking around the idea of doing a show together, and are getting ready to take it out there. We would travel and help save the world. Take people to cool places where they can have these great experiences. There are so many amazing things happening around the world, and I think people are missing out on them, but we want to make it cool and sexy. Use the medium of TV to shine a spotlight on something different. CEM: Before we let you go, is there anything else we should know about? AG: I think everyone out there, next time you go to the grocery store or to the mall, or to buy a new car, just take a moment to think about what you’re doing. If you’re buying an actual product, just flip it over to see if you can pronounce all the ingredients, and if you can’t maybe you shouldn’t do it. It had been a long but brilliant day, with an incredible crew and an amazing cover girl. Ashlan is a breath of fresh air and brings fun, laughter and a “Yeah, let’s do it!” energy to life. As she prepares to set sail on her next big voyage, I’m excited to see the trail she’ll blaze as the new Mrs Cousteau, on her own personal mission to save the world. www.earthecho.org

“One simple but powerful action we can all take is eliminating our disposable water bottle usage. We’re challenging our fans to ask themselves ‘do I need to purchase a bottle of water or can I use a reusable bottle instead?’” Entertainer and environmentalist Jason Mraz is making a difference in the music industry through his inspiring lyrics and green efforts. He believes, “each and every one of us is responsible for leaving the planet in a better condition than how we found it.” Partnered with REVERB and Brita’s Filter For Good Music Project, Mraz’s tours provides free filtered water stations. “One simple but powerful action we can all take is eliminating our disposable water bottle usage. We’re challenging our fans to ask themselves ‘do I need to purchase a bottle of water or can I use a reusable bottle instead?’” said Mraz. The stations are featured in an Eco-Village at each arena, which also houses information on local environmental organizations for volunteer projects. A philanthropist, he created the Jason Mraz Foundation, which partners with great non-profits in education, equality, and environmental issues. Organizations like VH1’s Save the Music Foundation for arts education, True Colors Fund for LGBT rights, and Surfrider for sustaining our oceans and beaches. His foundation also works with Jesse Billauer’s Life Rolls on, because Mraz feels “Jesse’s story is so powerful and just goes to show how being hopeful and believing in yourself can give you the strength to take on anything that life throws at you.” Writing new music never ends for Mraz, and he will be touring over four continents throughout the rest of the year. His passion for the arts and planet inspire his fans, and they are assured he “won’t give up on us.” jasonmraz.com
“The influence young people have on their parents exponentially increases the influence that they have on consumer behavior, on businesses. They influence their parents in politics and who they vote for. Young people drive change in society, and choices in society.”
In sharing a message that speaks to his well known family legacy, Philippe Cousteau reminds us that the planet has only a finite amount of natural resources and that of these, “our most precious resource isn’t gold, isn’t diamonds and it isn’t even oil; it’s water.” Through EarthEcho International, Cousteau empowers our youth to take action that restores and protects what his grandfather Jacques Cousteau once named as our water planet. As an explorer, social entrepreneur and environmental advocate, Philippe has a mission to help people find hope and recognize their own ability to create change. When asked about EarthEcho’s educational and leadership programs he responded that, “The influence young people have on their parents exponentially increases the influence that they have on consumer behavior, on businesses. They influence their parents in politics and who they vote for. Young people drive change in society, and choices in society.” Accordingly, EarthEcho provides educators with teaching aids that explore our oceans as well as best practices for preservation. Taking an enterprising approach, Philippe recently announced a partnership with AdvisorShares Investments to launch the Global Echo Exchange Traded Fund on the New York Stock Exchange and also the formation of Global Echo Foundation. He is co-founder of Azure Worldwide, a strategic environmental design, development and marketing company. Philippe is also a special correspondent for CNN International where he hosts documentaries and reports on environmental and humanitarian stories. “What we do with fresh water and the choices that we make as human beings are both part of the problem and part of the solution. How our governments act, how we act at home, how we begin to demand that our societies value water as the most precious resource that it is determines what kind of future that we build for ourselves, and for our children.” www.earthecho.org www.azureworldwide.com NYSE: GIVE

JESSE BILLAUER They Will Surf Again holds a special place in Billauer’s heart. He believes “surfing has given me the most out of anything in my life. Being able to share that with others has to be one of the best feelings in the world.” A hero on the surf and a hero on the surface, Jesse Billauer is a highly sought after motivational speaker. He is the founder of Life Rolls On (LRO), a non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for young people affected by spinal cord injuries through athletic activities that are viewed as impossible.
Photo: LifeRollsOn.Org
Billauer started surfing as a young child, and became a professional top-rated surf athlete in his teen years. Fearful a car accident at 16 would end his career, the following year his career ended his dream. While surfing, he was hit by a wave and crashed head first into a sand bar, leaving him paralyzed and diagnosed quadriplegic. Thankful for life and a second chance, he wanted “to give back to the spinal cord injury community and start a foundation that didn’t exist at the time.”

ROB MACHADO
He founded LRO, a division of the Christopher & Diane Reeves Foundation, which also raises spinal cord injury awareness. The feature activities include They Will Skate Again and They Will Snowboard Again. They Will Surf Again holds a special place in Billauer’s heart. He believes “surfing has given me the most out of anything in my life. Being able to share that with others has to be one of the best feelings in the world.”

Machado is aiming to have about five schools each year be part of the program to encourage slow growth and evolution over time.
Now touring across the globe giving inspirational speeches, one of his messages is, “No matter how bad things may appear, happiness is a positive thought away.” LRO’s next fundraiser is October 12th, 2013 in Marina del Rey, a gala called “Night by the Ocean.”
One School. One Nation. One World. Organized by the Rob Machado Foundation and Hurley H20, the Hydration Nation program places water refill stations in high schools to reduce waste. The program also creates profit by the sale of reusable water bottles to support programs that provide high quality filters to those in developing countries lacking clean water. Led by prestigious pro surfer and humanitarian Rob Machado, the admirable hands-on effort educates and provides tangible solutions to mitigate water resource issues worldwide.
Get involved with LRO through sponsorship, donations, volunteering, or spreading the word. Billauer stands strong as a leader for the spinal cord injury community and for many who need to be reminded that despite obstacles and challenges, Life Rolls On.
“At the end of the day, if we can eliminate our dependence on single-use plastic bottles and change a life, then we will continue to find ways to expand and inspire others to do their part. We believe that if one in six people do not have access to clean water, the remaining five can help,” Machado explains.

them in Haiti, Indonesia and Nicaragua… Pretty amazing science really.” Relief efforts are organized in conjunction with Waves for Water and RMF. Machado is aiming to have about 5 schools each year be part of the program to encourage slow growth and evolution over time. This fluid approach reminds us of the trademark surf style for which he is so dearly known. Supporters can also donate to an existing mission, start their own mission, or just buy a few filters directly by visiting the Waves for Water website. The price is roughly $50 and can provide enough water for 100 people, lasting approximately 5 years or more if properly treated. www.robmachadofoundation.org http://www.hurley.com www.wavesforwater.org/project/hydration-nation

SAM GEORGE Viewers take away from the film the appreciation of the Hawaiian story, personified by this remarkable man who represents the very best mana, or spirit, of his culture.
Water creates life and an inspirational milieu for writer and director Sam George. Surfing for over 30 years, and editor for Surfing and SURFER magazines, he finds stories in the waves and gives them a voice through film and cinema. A screenwriter and filmmaker for almost 10 years, his credits include Riding Giants, The Lost Wave, and a gang violence-focused documentary entitled Crips and Bloods: Made in America. His most recent work, Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau, is the story of a legendary surfer who died while attempting to save the lives of his crew after their canoe, Hokule’a, capsized. George felt “the opportunity to tell the story of Aikau was a once-in-a-life time deal. “ He is also personally linked to Aikau as a surfer who waved goodbye from the waters in Waikiki the day the Hokule’a left for Tahiti and never returned. He hopes “viewers take away from the film the appreciation of the Hawaiian story, personified by this remarkable man who represents the very best mana, or spirit, of his culture.” Celebrated at Cannes and releasing in the U.S. soon, his film Hollywood Don’t Surf, is a documentary that explores 50 years of Hollywood making surf movies; featuring interviews with Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Frankie Avalon. George’s successes will be forever celebrated in the heart he puts into his work. With pride in all his great life works, he believes “the thread binding one accomplishment to the other is unbroken; the ride has lasted that long. And it goes on.” cocoecomag.com

MOVMT was born from the desire to create wearable goods for friends that reflected a shared fervor for design, travel and the environment. The company’s founders were humbly driven by less work, more time to surf and being the positive change they wanted to see in the world. MOVMT partners with 5 Gyres, a non-profit that enables systematic reduction of plastics through oceanic research, collaboration and action. Since marr ying award winning f ilmmaker and oceanographer James Cameron in 2001, Suzy wanted a school environment that would stimulate and inspire her children to learn from a modern curriculum with a focus on sustainability. Frustrated with the education system that she felt was failing her son, Suzy created her own school. Suzy recruited her sister, Rebecca, a childhood development exper t and MUSE was born. Their mission is to inspire and educate young people to live consciously with themselves, each other, and the planet. The Calabasas, California campus is one of the greenest schools in the nations. MUSE par tnered up with Ecovations and took on the Living Building Challenge (LBC)—the industr y’s highest standards in resource conser vation and human wellness to transform the proper ty into a sustainable haven. The teachers give students individualized attention, shaping their curriculum around their interests while meeting California standards. The teachers integrate science, technology, engineering, the ar ts and mathematics into creative learning oppor tunities through the lens of sustainability called Green STEAM. To top it all off, she is a new mom. “I have an 11 month old girl, I wonder if in her lifetime water issues will become more pressing in the US?” Cummins wonders. “She exemplifies why we do this work – for the next generation”. Since learning about the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”—a massive area in the Pacific where swirling currents trap floating plastic waste in 2001, Cummins has been fascinated by plastic pollution. What struck me to my core was seeing first-hand how our plastic trash devastates marine wildlife,” said Cummins. Cummins wanted others to witness what she had seen. In 2009, Cummins and her husband Marcus Erikson launched the 5 Gyres Institute geared to eliminate plastic pollution from oceans and watersheds. 5 Gyres brings people out on expeditions to do research so they can personally learn about the issues. Imagine finding your passion at a young age and through hard work, making a career out of it? Pursuing her interest of oceanography, Washington worked toward becoming a marine biologist. To spread her love of the ocean and all of its inhabitants, Washington sponsors art and media projects to reach out to children. After winning the ROXY Follow Your Heart Tour in 2008, Washington and her mother founded an organization called the Big Blue & You. BB&Y’s mission is to educate youth about water conservation through service learning, visual arts and media. To raise awareness, they have hosted numerous filmmaking workshops where high school students create their own PSAs about water. BB&Y also host events like ‘Art by the Sea’-- an annual festival of dance and live music where local artists create recycled art related to the ocean. Water conservation is a critical issue and Washington believes that creative outlets are the best way to instill a passion for our planet within the next generation. Recently Danni co-hosted an educational video with Jaden Smith for his spring 2013 blockbuster film After Earth. “The opportunity to create a learning tool for teachers across the country to educate their students about global change and mass extinction was a privilege,” says Washington. Since she was seven years old, Washington has idolized Will Smith and so it was another dream come true for her to collaborate with him and his family on this project to spread such a pertinent message. www.afterearthscience.com “We are at a pivotal moment in history where the human race has a choice. The daughter of a legendary Yogi Deborah Koehn and worldrenowned photographer David Blehert, Teal was raised to be conscious of the environment. When they weren’t scaling mountains and crossing deserts, Teal called “Hale Kai” or “Ocean House” in Hawaii home. A pioneer in Green Living, Teal’s father sought to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible with solar-powered appliances According to “the most powerful shaman in the world,”--a character in one of her films, water is the most valuable resource on the planet. “How could we pollute such a massive ocean?” Teal shares, “Through my adventures I’ve been blessed to get a firsthand look at just how important it is that we do not use the ocean as a trash dump and to protect our rivers.” To Teal, the world is her school and playground so she implements eco choices in every aspect of her life. When surfing, Teal uses an eco surfboard and wears bikinis from sustainable, recyclable fabrics. Teal is also an ambassador for Sustainable Surf, a non-profit who developed the Waste to Waves program that recycles household waste into surfboards. Now grown up, Teal has created her own project, “Alison’s Adventures” a film series to educate through humorous entertainment. In each film, a local companion guides Teal through their culture, customs, survival, sustainability, and happiness. Each film calls attention to global, environmental and human issues and inspires viewers to be part of the solution. Despite many sponsors “Alison’s Adventures” is a bare bones operation built on volunteer work. Currently Teal is trying to start showing her films at schools nationwide and just launched a campaign on Red Capes it’s a new type crowd funding site with only “do good projects”. At first sight of the Algarve and its signature blue sky, red sun kissed cliffs and the welcomed warm feel of hot air on my fair English skin, I immediately felt a sense of relief and anticipation of what was to come. My mother and I had fled the dull and depressing start to the English summer just over two hours previously, and were now descending into sunny Portugal to partake in a four day Fitness and Health program at the Longevity Wellness Resort in Monchique – only an hour’s drive from Faro. After our car had snaked and climbed up through the hills to the small town of Monchique, we arrived. The dark grey block exterior of the resort is functional rather than aesthetically pleasing but it does serve an important reminder, that this is a ‘holiday’ for the mind, body and soul where serious action to get all in tip-top condition is required. Inside, the intoxicating scent of local fresh lavender immediately engulfs you like the salty sea air does at the beach, lifting the spirits like an unannounced sugar rush. Views look exquisitely to the surrounding hills and forests, which stretch far and wide all the way to the coast –only twenty-minutes away by car. Once both sight and taste had been appeased, (the signature drink is a sublime yet subtle mix of Monchique’s own mineral water, hibiscus, orange and honey which is, incredibly refreshing for a weary traveler), it was time for a tour around the resort. The beautiful Chief Wellness Manager Teresa Malheiro facilitated this – her glowing appearance making us ever more eager to get started on our programs. The resort is equipped with two restaurants, medical rooms, spa, indoor heated pool and outdoor unheated pool, gym, steam and sauna rooms, and the best of all – rain showers – which shine warm infa-red light while spraying a mild “rain”, which is intensely scented with tropical
Throughout our five days we enjoyed nature walks, sessions of stretching, Pilates, yoga, Swiss ball, personal training, healthy cooking workshops fruits, making you feel as if you’re in a Herbal Essence ad. Our garden suite was complete with two bathrooms, a kitchenette, living area and balcony. After settling in we ate our first Longevity meal – grilled free-range chicken breast on leguminous, bell peppers and herbs. Light, yet, satisfying and deliciously fresh and aromatic. It was then time to savor the sun for a few hours by the pool while harmoniously listening to the gushing water from the waterfall that hypnotically feeds the pool beneath it. Next up was my initial Biophysical Evaluation & Fitness Assessment where my fitness, fat, muscle, water and body mass index were measured. From this, the staff devises a tailor made fitness and food program and you don’t have to think about a thing. Not even if you fancy a snack, because even these are prescribed twice daily. life. Including spa treatments. Today, mine was the Longevity body scrub with sea salts and lemon, which is sweet smelling and leaves you buffed to perfection, not to mention incredibly relaxed and only good for dinner and bed – the former of which my mother and I ate luxuriously in our bathrobes at our own dining table in our suite, before we bid bon nuit. Throughout our five days we enjoyed nature walks, sessions of stretching, Pilates, yoga, Swiss ball, personal training, healthy cooking workshops (and of course spa time)! A firm favorite was the Swiss ball class led by fitness trainer, Elier (who is brilliant, funny and full of energy and enthusiasm). You line up sitting on the ball facing Elier, and when the music starts you bounce on the ball to the beat – the trick being to do it slowly while engaging your core muscles. Of course we all wanted to bounce nineteen to the dozen, at which point Elier comically remarked to my mother; “Josephine you are getting over excited on your ball!” and at which point we all broke down into fits of giggles. Before leaving on day 5, I had my final Biophysical and was excited to see that I’d gained more muscle and lost fat. I looked and felt so much better in my mind, body and soul and we wished forlornly that we could stay forever.

Stepping out onto the moist boat deck, the glitter of the Pacific Ocean’s waves looked like a pool of diamonds. It had taken us nearly a full day boat ride to come to rest off the coast of Guadalupe Island where the elephant seals come to birth their young. The thrill of excitement took over my body, tinged with a bit of fear, for I knew what creatures lurked in these waters… and I was there to meet them. I have never been afraid of animals: mammal, reptile or insect (except for the occasional giant spider in my bed -- that would scare anyone). Growing up, my parents always encouraged my gift of finding lost or injured animals and getting them home but even my parents were nervous over this particular encounter. Their daughter was going swimming with the most powerful and deadly being of the sea, the Great White Shark. Going shark diving had been something on my bucket list since college. I never really thought I would get to do it because 1) I didn’t think anyone would go with me and 2) what possible reason would a southern girl have for jumping off a perfectly good boat and into the water with these giants? Well, I found both answers in one man, my fiancé Philippe Cousteau. When Philippe asked what I wanted for my 30th birthday, the answer flew off my tongue at a rate that surprised even me. I, Ashlan McKain Gorse, wanted to go diving with Great Whites. As we suited up for our first dive, the fear mounted. It wasn’t a fear of the sharks but of the unknown. As our cage left the deck and slowly descended into the cold blue abyss, I felt as though I was dying; water fills up the cage,
the frigid temperature seizes your lungs, your eyes can’t focus, everything is confusing. But as soon as we were fully submerged, I was re-born into a magical world, their world. There in the distance was a giant grey submarine, cruising in and out of sight. I could hardly see him, but I could feel that he saw me. After a few distant circles, he came in for a closer look at us. Swimming directly toward me was a 16-foot male Great White Shark. He had huge scars on his face and fins, memories of battles long past. Even with his massive length and gir th he moved through the water with the grace and ease of a classic ballerina on stage. His mouth was a sight to behold as even closed you could see rows and rows of razorblade sharp teeth sticking out. But he was not scary, I felt no fear. He was just a majestic creature, a dinosaur in fact, who was out for an afternoon stroll. The next thing I knew, there were seven different Whites around us, swimming in to get a better look. Some of the sharks were more aloof, others more curious and playful. They all had different personalities like puppies…well big, giant puppies with killer teeth. But the one thing that stood out the most to me was their eyes. Sharks have visible pupils, so when one would come to the cage, they would make eye contact with you. I could actually see the sharks come up, scan us up and down and look me directly in the eye, peering into my soul. I was so at peace with them, I got out of the cage and sat on top to just hang out in their company. All sense of anxiety disappeared, along with the rest of the world. It was just me and the Whites.

I have never had an experience like that and I don’t know if I ever will again. These beautiful creatures are disappearing at a staggering rate. Their evil persona in films and television are to blame for most of the fear the public has. In 2012, we had only 7 fatal shark attacks worldwide. The fact of the matter is more people are killed yearly by lightning or even vending machines falling on them. But it’s not just people’s fear that is harmful to these ocean beasts; shark finning is to blame for the 90% population decline. The shark finning industry kills about 70 to 100 MILLION sharks a year. Now even if you don’t like sharks and JAWS is your favorite movie, think of this: sharks are the apex predator of the ocean. That means they help keep everything in the ocean in check. A healthy shark population leads to a healthy ocean which equals healthy fish for the 1.2 billion people on our planet whose primary protein source comes from the sea. If we continue to kill the shark population, the entire ocean eco-system will be thrown off with disastrous consequences for all of humanity. I will forever see sharks in a different light after visiting their world, and I hope others will too. They are gorgeous, powerful creatures who should be protected and free to rule the Oceans as they have for centuries. www.earthecho.org

Change is unavoidable, evolution, inevitable. Transformation is a choice. When I sat down to write this article about water, I thought I would be writing about my love of the ocean. How a wave is water caught up in the energy of the universe and how riding that wave, I feel one with all that is. It can be pretty profound. But as I continued contemplating water, really considering it, it struck me that water isn’t just waves of universal energy. It’s rain. It’s snow. It’s condensation and fog. Water is an ocean, a river, a waterfall. Yet in all it’s incarnations, water is water: H2o. No matter what form it takes, hot or cold, calm or violent, liquid or solid, evaporating up or raining down, water is water. It never loses the essence of what it is, transforming from one incarnation of itself into another without effort or doubt. Water is the most amazing element on the planet. puddle, it understood that it’s failure to remain an ice cube wasn’t a failure at all but being true to it’s very essence, it could begin again as the life giving water it is. Change is unavoidable, evolution, inevitable. Transformation is a choice. Retaining the essence of who we are through all the changes life delivers allows us to choose transformation rather than to merely be changed. Holding that essence through each and every challenge, through every event or happening or circumstance allows us to be the truest, most beautiful we can be and on a deeper level, the most beautiful we have ever been. To be like water is to go through life retaining the essence of who we are. That’s life. That’s water. Like water, for life. www.niaselementsoflife.com
hesitancy, evolve rightly, retaining the essence of who we are? We’d always be comfortable in our own skin, whether it’s as taught as a baby’s behind or as weathered as an old saddle. We’d continue inspiring others through our own expression, transcending the uniform and adherence to certain rules required by our new job. We wouldn’t take it personally when our lover tells us we’re not right for him because ...we’re not. And we’re okay with that. What if we could ride the waves of change to a better, more right place, ALWAYS. No matter what happens; who comes in and out of our lives, how many friends let us down, which dream job we didn’t get, we would remain true to who we are. And we would be content because no matter what happens, we’re living authentically. We’re living as we were meant to live, fulfilling our purpose. We’re living like water. Water makes it look so easy. But for us it can seem near impossible. We can be clipping along at a good pace, everything in place and then suddenly something changes. Or maybe it’s a handful of tiny changes that occur, one uneventful moment at a time. But one day we look up and we’re living in the wrong body, the wrong relationships, careers or lifestyles. How does this happen? I mean let’s face it. Life is a moving breathing thing, as constant as the sea but just as unpredictable. Change is unavoidable, evolution inevitable. But TRANSFORMATION? That’s a choice. I actually looked up the definition of these words.
132
| COCO ECO MAGAZINE | July/August 2013
CHANGE: to become different. (For better or for worse. There is no distinction) EVOLUTION: change over time. (Again, for better or for worse.) But the definition of Transformation, the definition I choose, lies in a quote by Mary Manin-Morrissey:
Transformation isn’t change, but finding the essence of who we are. Recently I was asked to do an episode of Celebrity Wife Swap. My first response was, “No, I can’t do reality TV!” As I began contemplating the “WHY” behind the “No” I realized it was my preconceived notion as to what reality TV is and what types of celebrities do reality shows. “Surely I’m not one of those.” I thought. But as they continued pitching the idea to me, I separated Nia from “Nia Peeples” and the idea began to intrigue me. I thought, “Wow, this might actually be a good thing for the family, an experience that brings us a little closer together or gives us a fresh perspective on our family life. We might learn something here.” So against the advice of some powers that be, I jumped. I said yes. And my family embarked on an intense couple of weeks trading me

for the 80’s pop icon, Tiffany. The experience turned out to be great for all of us. Being apart from one another, living by other people’s house rules, we gained a greater appreciation for each other as well as for the amazing unit we are. But surprisingly enough, there was much more to be gained by viewing the finished product. As we sat watching the show with family and friends, witnessing our family life unfold in front of millions; my husband surfing, my teenage daughter rolling her eyes, my son holding tightly to his musical integrity and Nia being Nia as opposed to playing a character, what I saw up on that screen for the most part, was honest and accurate. We were genuine. And it occurred to me that somehow through this thirty year career, the children, the marriages and divorces, through the births and deaths of close friends and family, through whatever successes and perceived failures, somehow, through some aspects of it, I had managed to retain an essence of who I am. And that essence has permeated the lives of my family and friends, and even our community. It’s not the changes in life that make us. It’s not even the decisions we make, right or wrong, up or down, left or right. It’s our responses to those changes and our ability to honor ourselves through the process. If water had a mind, a consciousness, and tried to remain an ice cube in the heat of summer, it wouldn’t succeed. Then it would feel like a failure, rather than the life giving water it truly is. But if, lying there a

They say in life it’s good to have a Plan B – a back-up plan. So when I received an invitation from Sir Richard Branson and Jochen Zeitz, Director of the Kering Group (which includes Gucci, Stella McCartney, Balenciaga and Puma), to attend the launch of ‘The B Team’ at BAFTA (home of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts), I expected something interesting, innovative and challenging. They didn’t disappoint. 134

So what is ‘The B Team’? The B Team is a non-profit organisation that aims to put people and planet alongside profit. They want to revolutionise the way businesses operate by looking beyond short-term profit. This event was streamed live online from BAFTA’s iconic Princess Anne Theatre to over 600 gatherings in more than 115 cities around the world. If ever there was a right time for business to act as a force for good, it is now, and this is what the B Team hope to achieve. People, planet and profit or ‘the triple bottom line’, was a phrase first coined in 1994 by John Elkington. He believed that companies should have three separate bottom lines:- profit and loss, people’s account and planet account. In a 2009 article, The Economist said, “What you measure is what you get, because what you measure is what you are likely to pay attention to. Only when companies measure their social and environmental impact will we have socially and environmentally responsible organisations”. Other leaders joining Sir Richard Branson and Jochen Zeitz on The B Team are:
Shari Arison, Owner, Arison Group Kathy Calvin, President and CEO, United Nations Foundation Arianna Huffington, Chair, President & Editor In Chief, The Huffington Post Media Group Mo Ibrahim, Founder, Celtel Guilherme Leal, Founder & Co-Chairman, Natura Strive Masiyiwa, Founder & Chairman, Econet Wireless François-Henri Pinault, CEO & Chairman, Kering Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus, Tata Group Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chairman, Yunus Centre Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Coordinating Minister of the Economy & Minister of Finance, Nigeria • Zhang Yue, Chairman and Founder, Broad Group China Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Deputy Chair, The Elders (Honorary Leader) Mary Robinson, Secretary, The Elders and President, Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice (Honorary Leader)

Refreshingly, these business leaders and global figures, are leading by example, by starting with their own businesses. They’re not claiming to be perfect but are committed to making the necessary changes. Paul Polman of Unilever for example, launched the company’s Sustainable Living Plan in November 2010. The programme seeks to double sales and halve the environmental impact of its products by 2020. If they inspire other business leaders to be ‘change agents’ they have a good chance of starting that revolution, and being successful. “We want to start a global conversation on a “Plan B” for business. We are working with government agencies, the social sector, and business leaders to help get on top of some of the world’s seemingly intractable challenges. We are keen to listen, learn and share with others to build businesses that do what’s right for people and the planet,” said Sir Richard Branson. The B Team have a 10 point agenda, which comprises some of the areas they believe Plan B needs to address. The first item on the agenda is ‘The Right Aspirations’. This focuses on ensuring the right global incentives are in place to promote, inspire and celebrate business models that integrate people, planet and profit into their DNA. Other points include ‘True Accounting’ (that business is accountable to society for the true cost of every business practice - economic, social and environmental);

‘Well Being’ (That business is a primary driver of holistic wellbeing, adding social value through evolving business models, employee welfare, health, citizen engagement and human rights). The remaining six are New Structures, True Returns, True Transparency, a Level Playing Field, Natures Model, Redefined Education, and the Long Run. The B Team will address three initial challenges: “The Future of Leadership”, “The Future Bottom Line” and “The Future of Incentives” to help focus business on the long term gain and benefits for people and planet. So how can we really make the shift from competition and consumption to collaboration and cooperation? The B Team is using the moral compass of FHPC - Fair, Honest, Positive and Creative - to keep them focused on their vision. A brilliantly simple, yet effective checklist. The good news is, this is a great tool we can also use in our daily lives whether in business or at home. How often do we complain or criticise, when we could recognise another’s efforts, listen and look for a creative solution to a challenge that will benefit all of us. Arianna Huffington said before the launch, “…Those of us in the media have to do a much better job at putting the spotlight on what is working. There is a real danger that by focusing exclusively on what is not working and what is dysfunctional,
we are missing out on spotlighting the leaders and organizations already taking steps to change the way we do business around the world…This is a moment of great possibility and opportunity for all of us to play our part in course-correcting, and leveraging the best parts of the spirit of business and entrepreneurship to bring about fundamental changes to the ways we do business -- for the benefit of individuals, communities, and companies.” Whilst it is easy to be sceptical and untrusting of global corporations, this could be a great opportunity for real and lasting change in our lifetime. www.bteam.org

The good news is, today reusable water bottles are lining the shelves of every mass-retail store in all shapes and sizes. In spite of the inundated selection of bottles to choose from, the SIGG bottle remains a top seller. It’s not just the clean, sleek design or the high quality of the bottle that draws consumers to it but the values and principles it was built upon. When SIGG first started out in 1908, it was a general household goods manufacturer in its native Switzerland. By 1980, the company had evolved to specialize in premium, reusable bottles before they became mainstream—leading it to brand itself “the Original Swiss bottle.” SIGG bottles have garnered an impressive international following. Crafted out of a single sheet of aluminum, the bottle has no seams and is leak-proof, as well as being guaranteed to be taste-neutral with no strange aftertaste. Plus, their reputable commitment to community building, sustainability, and charitable causes continues to make the 105 year-old company an influential social trailblazer. On their website, MySIGG.com users can choose from seven different caps with various size openings and tops to customize their bottles and fit their lifestyle needs. So your SIGG can fit your personality. For the outdoor adventurer SIGG has become a household name amongst hikers, bikers and mountaineers for its lightweight durability, but it has also become wellregarded in the art world. SIGG’s staunch belief in individualism
has driven the company to release a new collection of bottle designs every year. There are thousands of different design combinations to choose from. SIGG shoppers can choose from the original bottles bearing the company logo or bright-hued graphic patterns. Star Wars enthusiasts can sip from a bottle bearing Yoda’s image, and there’s even a collection celebrating the Chinese New Year. The company’s site describes its hope to transform their water bottles from mere containers, to canvasses of art and possibility. Since 1993, SIGG’s innovative designs have been featured in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. Two iconic bottles remain in the permanent collection, and new sample designs are also displayed there. In addition to aesthetic appeal, SIGG realized that the bottle design could further act as a platform to advocate change and promote community engagement. In its latest collaboration with skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, SIGG invited the public to create their own action packed Hawk-inspired design. The Tony Hawk design initiative was a global contest open to the public for those to submit their digital art work inspired by Tony Hawk, for a chance to have their design produced on a SIGG bottle and attend the annual Stand Up For Skateparks event taking place in October. In addition to collaborating with pro-athletes, SIGG has also partnered up with top musicians and fashion designers, to send a widespread message about LIFE | 141

consciousness that transcends beyond industries. Elite fashion designer Vivienne Westwood designed her own line of SIGG bottles, and in 2010 a bottle was featured hanging from a model’s bag as she strutted down the runway. SIGG also participated in the 2011 Reverb Campus Consciousness Tour with hip-hop musician Wiz Khalifa, educating college students about sustainable lifestyles. The SIGG bottle is also a hit among the jet set crowd of Hollywood. Stars like Jessica Alba, Gisele Bundchen, Natalie Portman and Zac Efron have been spotted toting the bottle around. Switzerland is one of the greenest and most eco-friendly countries in a world. A true Swiss company, SIGG operates under the highest environmental standards in the country, recycling aluminum waste, and cleaning and reusing their factory’s water supply. The company’s dedication to ecological preservation and sustainability is not just reflected in its practice, but in its products. SIGG’s premium bottles are made to last, and after its long lifespan it can be completely recycled. SIGG recently teamed up with American lifestyle brand, Cuipo, creating a collection of water bottles to preserve endangered rainforest land in Panama. The Cuipo bottles depict animals threatened by the deforestation of their natural habitat. Some bottles show cute graphics of a dolphin mid-leap and a dangling sloth for children, but there are also many with profound

messages. The design with an empowered fist acting as a tree trunk is a call to action, and a jaguar with the word RESPECT emblazoned underneath, sends a powerful message about conservation efforts. Each purchase comes with a special code, so buyers can see their contribution make a difference in saving parts of the rainforest. Under the leadership of CEO Patric Zingg, SIGG is poised to keep growing as an international brand. Zingg’s past as Vice President of the reputable Swatch Group (in which he serviced 86 countries), is a reassuring nod to his experience in the international market. Zingg is leading in origination of design and materials, constantly pushing the envelope. SIGG is as committed to the quality of their products as it is invested in social cause. With innovative collaborations, strong leadership at its helm and continued dedication to its mission, we’re excited to see what the next 100 years holds for SIGG. www.mysigg.com

Water is arguably earth’s most valuable resource. H20 cleanses, hydrates, supports marine life, and is an integral part of our planet’s eco system. Coco Eco profiles four organizations that are dedicated to preserving our liquid assets.

5 GYRES Anna Cummins and Marcus Eriksen are the epitome of an eco power couple, with their union exemplified not only through marriage, but a mutual desire to save our waters from pollution. 5 Gyres was born of the collective passion of Eriksen, who has a Ph.D. in Science Education, and wife Anna who has over ten years worth of experience working in the environmental non-profit sector. The organization was founded in collaboration with Algalita and Pangaea Explorations, to research and communicate plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. Their aim is at reducing plastics pollution through conducting research, and communicating their findings to raise awareness on the global impact plastic has on our oceans. Their mission is to employ strategies to eliminate the accumulation of plastic pollution in the 5 subtropical gyres. Recently 5 Gyres undertook a study to discover the source of microbeads that were polluting our lakes and rivers. It was uncovered through their extensive research of the Great Lakes that the grain of sand like microbeads were the product facial scrubs containing. 5 Gyres launched a campaign to remove microbeads from commercial products. result, quickly Loreal, Body Shop, Johnson and Johnson, and Proctor and Gamble made commitments to stop using plastic microbeads in their products. The 5 Gyres for plastics team also recently sailed from Sri Lanka to Phuket, Thailand. It was the first expedition looking for plastics in that part of the world. Learn more at www.5gyres.org LAEO The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization is an independent non-profit, international conservation and environmental group. Founded by the late Lawrence Anthony, an environmentalist, explorer, and Author. Anthony who sadly passed away in 2012 was a remarkable and passionate man who was best known for his pro-active, scientific based approach to solving environmental issues. LAEO’s latest work is a continuing reflection of its founder. LAEO along with the Science and Technology Board compiled a paper entitled A Call for a Twenty-First-Century SOLUTION in Oil Spill Response as an educationally proactive approach to the oil spill problems associated with drilling, transport, pipelines and storage mishaps. The analysis not only brings to light the dangerous flaws associated with current oil spill cleanup methods, but outlines technology that claims will not only save marine life, oceans, animals and people, but also save millions (and in BP’s case could have saved billions) of dollars in damages and cleanup costs to oil companies and local economies impacted by spills. The research conducted by LAEO has forged a surprising common ground alliance between oil companies and environmentalists. The LAEO paper discusses ineffective handling of the Gulf of

Mexico BP oil spill disaster when predominantly treated with the industry’s favorite spill killer--Corexit™. Originally developed by ExxonMobil, it is a toxic, hydrocarbon-based, oil-dispersant agent. “These faulty guidelines and ineffective remedies for spill problems have resulted in industry officials with a 25-year addiction to chemical dispersants used in our oceans and who mistakenly think that these are the best tools for managing environmental damage and profit loss from oil spill fines,” said Diane Wagenbrenner, one of the paper’s joint authors and Advisory Board member of LAEO. The analysis makes an undeniable case that the use of chemical dispersant violates the Clean Water Act by contaminating the water column and seabed. Alongside publishing its industry guidance reform paper, LAEO launched a government and public education and awareness campaign on 20 April coinciding with the third-year anniversary of the start of the BP Gulf Oil Spill and Earth Month. The position paper and their ‘earth troops’ Oil Spill Response Action Kit can be found at www.protectmarinelifenow.org OCEANA If Oceana was of the marine world, it would be the giant of the sea. Founded in 2001 by a number of foundations as an attempt to remedy the paucity of resources dedicated to ocean advocacy in the United States, Oceana was birthed with the vision that it would be solely dedicated to ocean conservation on a global scale. Oceana is now the largest international with offices in North America, South America, and Europe, which all collaborate on strategic, direct campaigns. Science is paramount in identifying problems and solutions. Oceana’s team of Scientists combined with the collective efforts of a team of
economists, lawyers and advocates enables them to provide tangible results for our oceans. Oceana honors others who advocate for the common goal by hosting the annual Ocean Hero Awards, with the 5th annual awards underway. After carefully reviewing hundreds of nominations for some of America’s most exceptional ocean stewards, Oceana selected an outstanding group of six adult finalists and six junior finalists hailing from all corners of the U.S. The public was invited to choose this year’s adult and junior winners by voting online. Lifelong ocean hero and Oceana senior advisor Alexandra Cousteau said, “I’ve been lucky enough to be around Ocean Heroes, like my grandfather Jacques Cousteau, my whole life. What I’ve learned is this: ocean heroes are everywhere. People young and old are working tirelessly to protect our seas all over the world. Oceana has selected an amazing group of finalists for this year’s Ocean Hero Awards, so please take a look at their stories and vote for the hero that inspires you the most.” To learn more about each finalist’s story and to vote for your favorites, visit www.oceana.org/heroes
