History of Grey Oaks
As Grey Oaks approached its 30th anniversary, General Manager Don Emery commissioned Tom Neill, president of Private Club Historical, to create a display and exhibit, as well as a history book and video commemorating three decades of the Club’s activity and growth.
Since the Club was founded by Judy Sproul, a direct descendant of Barron Collier, at one time Florida’s largest landowner and the primary developer of the state’s Southwestern region during the 1920s, the Club’s history intermingles with the history of Collier, Naples and, of course, Florida’s greatest natural resource, the Everglades.
With all this considered, Tom decided to display Grey Oaks’ story in a timeline consisting of a collection of words and richly colorful graphics arranged chronologically and showcased down the hallway leading into the East Clubhouse Golf Shop. “We felt that a historical display of this type would really enrich our member experience,” said Don Emery. “It draws people into the clubhouse, of course, but it also gives everyone a real sense of what makes the Club and community so special.”
Emery further notes: “Lots of clubs have historical items on display, celebrating various aspects of their heritage. We wanted to integrate all of ours into a timeline to tell the complete story of Grey Oaks in an engaging fashion - and also illustrate parts of our history that many people may not have even known we had. This is vital not only for the member experience as previously mentioned, but also to educate and build pride in our culture with the staff.”
Tom Neill shares: “The importance of the chronological approach we used is it draws viewers into the entirety of a club’s narrative, creating a much greater appreciation of what makes a club unique. This approach also allows a club to provide a complete story, one which often produces long-lost (or overlooked) pieces of history and allows a club to highlight changes, improvements and upcoming events that are going to define its future.”
We encourage you to view the history exhibit in what is now termed the “History Hallway” to learn about our storied past and what’s in store for the future.
Be on the look-out for a series of videos taken at this year’s Original’s Ball which contain interviews with several of our long-time members. Memories from the early years are shared as well as how Grey Oaks has evolved over time. Central themes of the videos also include the members’ sense of community and fellowship at the Club and how they are “living their best lives at Grey Oaks!”
SHADES OF VIBRANT blue WITH POPS OF lavender AND pink ARE THE PROMINENT
COLORS IN THE GOLF SHOP’S SPRING AND SUMMER APPAREL COLLECTIONS.
Get the Look:
1. A.J. is wearing the Dragonfly Garden Polo by Greyson, featuring an elongated retro placket, in navy with lavender accents. His navy Montauk Shorts, also by Greyson, feature a flat front and four-way stretch for pure comfort. Royal Albartross’s navy braided leather belt and Footjoy’s Flex-XP golf shoes complement and complete A.J.’s look this season.
A.J.’s G/FORE logoed color block golf bag in Twilight provides ample room for his clubs and golfing accessories.
2. Tyler is featured in the latest Crown Crafted collection from Peter Millar. His Hammered Performance Polo in Surfboard Blue has a tailored fit and performance fabric for the rising temperatures this summer. Paired with Peter Millar’s five-pocket Navy pant and custom designed Smathers & Branson needlepoint belt, Tyler’s look is perfect for on or off the golf course.
3. John’s ensemble is from johnnie-O’s latest collection. His festive Hendrick Polo in Malibu is a scattered print featuring today’s favorite poolside cocktails with accents of pink and green. His coordinating johnnie-O shorts in Baja Blue are a poly/cotton/spandex blend that features an inside gripper waistband to help keep his shirt tucked in. A white leather Nexbelt, cut to size, completes the look for John.
4. Julie looks stunning in Fairway & Green’s latest Sorbetto Collection. Her long sleeve raspberry print zip mock is accented with dream and dreamsicle colors, reminiscent of your favorite sherbet flavor. Providing UPF 50 protection, this beautiful lightweight shirt is paired with Fairway & Green’s pull-on birdie pant in Pearl. This Fairway & Green latest spring collection is sure to be a favorite this season!
For all of these looks and many more, Marilinda Scarsella and her merchandising team invite you to stop by the Golf Shop. They are always here to help and look forward to assisting you with your spring and summer golf fashion selections.
ALL THE BUZZ ABOUT BOCCE
INTERVIEW WITH A.J. HOBBS & TRENT ROCCO
BY MIRA HALE CRIGLERAlthough our bocce program is relatively new at Grey Oaks, the game of bocce in its current form has been around since 264 B.C. Notable bocce players included the Roman Emperor Augustus, the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates and the astronomer Galileo. Early Americans also participated in the sport with George Washington building a bocce court at Mount Vernon in the 1780s.
Grey Oaks’ foray into bocce
began in 2017 with the expansion of the Wellness Center. Member Dave (Dino) Pauldine assisted club management with the original design of the program. Two courts were available for member play until the summer of 2019 when the Club added two additional bocce courts along with a viewing area and outdoor grill. The program has grown exponentially over the past few years under the leadership of A.J. Hobbs and Trent Rocco.
Recently, l sat down with A.J. and Trent to discuss the enormous popularity of the sport among our membership.
Q: When did you join Grey Oaks? How long have you been involved with the bocce program?
A: A.J. - After graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University and interning at various resorts in Southwest Florida, I joined the Grey Oaks team in 2016 as an aquatics supervisor overseeing pool operations. During the summer of 2019, when the Club expanded the bocce complex, I gratefully accepted the newly created role of recreation manager.
A: Trent - I joined the Grey Oaks team in 2017 as a pool attendant working alongside A.J. in the Aquatics Department. When the bocce court expansion was unveiled to the membership in 2019, I transitioned into the role of bocce coordinator.
Q: How many members participate in the bocce program at Grey Oaks?
A: This past winter, we set a record with 48 teams, consisting of over 450 players, in our bocce program! Grey Oaks also has a travel team that competes against other clubs in the Naples Bocce League.
Q: Does the Club offer league play?
A: Yes, Grey Oaks offers two terms of league play for the fall and winter seasons that typically run 8-10 weeks per session. League play is held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays with games starting at 4:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.
Q: Are the teams competitive? Can a beginner join in on the fun?
A: We host competitive matches on Monday and Tuesday nights. Our Wednesday night league, however, is suited more for the social player, so we highly encourage beginner players to join on Wednesday nights.
Q: What does it take to be a Super Bocce Bowl Champion?
A: There are two answers to this question. From a technical standpoint, it takes winning four matches. Each match consists of two games, so a Super Bocce Bowl Champion must endure eight games before being crowned. This total excludes any possible “roll offs.” A
roll off occurs when two teams split their match 1-1 necessitating a third game which is abbreviated to seven points. The Super Bocce Bowl tournament takes place over three days and, in many ways, is an endurance test.
The second answer to your question is more of a subjective response. To be a Super Bocce Bowl Champion takes skill, poise under pressure, teamwork, communication and strategy.
Q: What special bocce events are held throughout the year?
A: Many special bocce events are scheduled throughout the calendar year. Our “Bocce, Burgers and Brews” is a social event typically held on the last Friday of each month. All game play is organized prior to the event into quick 2 vs. 2 and 4 vs. 4 match settings, allowing plenty of time for members to eat and enjoy beverages and music by our D.J. in between games. These social events are for players of all levels.
Q: What would you say to members interested in bocce play?
A: Bocce is the perfect mix of fun, entertainment and competition. Anyone can play, and it’s the ultimate couple’s sport.
Q: How do members register for teams, leagues and social events?
A: All bocce team play, leagues and events are posted on the Club’s app and website at www.greyoakscc.com and promoted in the weekly Club Activity Newsletter. If you have questions regarding bocce, please email us at Trocco@greyoakscc.com or Ajhobbs@greyoakscc.com or call us at 239-262-5550 ext 182.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE BOCCE COURTS!

Lisa has booked nearly 1,000 appointments with the membership over the last three years and has built a loyal client base and referral network. She shares, “my primary goal is to restore your optimal health and empower you to live a healthy lifestyle using natural and alternative therapies that produce measurable results.” In a recent survey conducted by the Club’s Wellness Committee, which included nine Florida-based clubs, four of which were in the Top 10 of the Top 150 Platinum Country Clubs of America’s 2023-2024 edition, our Body Restoration Services provided a notable differentiator in Grey Oaks’ holistic wellness offering when compared to other clubs’ traditional offerings of spa services and fitness.
A few of our members offer these glowing remarks about Lisa’s services:
“After seeking outside treatment, with minimal healing effects, I scheduled a session with Lisa at the Wellness Center. After undergoing the SCENAR technology, my back pain and bursitis inflammation around my hip area were significantly reduced. I have also experienced great improvement with mobility in these areas. If you have tried traditional treatments and are still suffering, I strongly recommend the technology treatments Lisa offers.”
“I began my sessions with Lisa to treat my chronic back pain and to restore full nerve functionality in my feet and legs following the removal of bone spurs in my
lower spine. Her use of Neuro Modulation equipment and technique on my spine has helped stimulate the apparent regrowth and definite reactivation of nerves in my lower legs and feet improving my walking, stability and core balance. The Cranial Release Technique Lisa provides helps create a relaxation response in my body. It has been very beneficial following a workout and helpful with overall stress reduction.”
The Club’s Body Restoration Services pricing options are based on duration of the service, for
example:
25 min — $75
50 min— $135
80 min — $200
The services are offered Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Wellness Center. Members can schedule appointments by calling 239-262-3478.
