Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014

Focal ón gCathaoirleach A Cháirde, mar Cathaoirleach Choiste Iomaná Cill Dara, is mór an onóir domsa fáilte a chur roimh go bPairc Naomh Conleth inniu. I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending today’s games and I hope you have a most enjoyable day’s sport. Today is the highlight of the Kildare Hurling Calendar with two finals down for decision. The first match on the card today is the Final of the Junior Championship between Éire Óg Corrachoill and Ros Glas . It is great to see both teams here today as they have been the best two teams in Junior hurling this year. Earlier in the year they contested the Junior League Final which Éire Óg Corrachoill won by the narrowest of margins after a great game of hurling. I expect another close contest today with Ros Glas giving it their all to even the score by taking the championship cup. With both teams so evenly matched this one could go either way and I think we are in for a really great game. The Senior decider sees Celbridge taking on old adversaries Coill Dubh. This is Celbridge’s sixth final in a row, of which they have won four including a three in a row and they will start as hot favourites for today’s game. They have an abundance of talented and experienced players who know how to win finals. Coill Dubh however will have something to say about that. They are a club with a proud hurling tradition. They go into today’s game as underdogs but I am sure that won’t phase them one bit. There is a nice blend of youth and experience running through their team, they will be well motivated and on their day they are a match for anyone. The outcome of this game is another hard one to call but I have no doubt we are in for a cracking game of hurling. In conclusion I want to thank the grounds staff of St Conleth’s Park for having the pitch in such wonderful condition and wish both teams, referee’s and officials the very best of luck in their endeavours this afternoon. I look forward to two exciting games and hope that no matter what happens hurling will be the real winner today. Mile buíochas, mise le meas, ÉAMONN Ó LEATHLOBHAIR Today’s programme was compiled and edited by the Kildare Hurling Committee. Míle Buíochas to the contributors from the Clubs involved and also to Ian Baker (Liffey Champion), Brendan Coffey (Kildare Nationalist), Cormac O’Malley and John Ryan. Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014

The Gearóid Ó Tiarnáin Perpetual Poc Fada Trophy Earlier this year Kildare GAA named the county senior Poc Fada trophy in honour of the late Gearóid Ó Tiarnáin and today the trophy will be p r e s e n t e d t o J a c k Sheridan by Gearóid’s daughter and son, Mary and Gearóid. In life Gearóid had a passion for many things – hurling and Irish chief amongst them – but he always directed that passion in the right way. “At 83 years of age, Gearóid had passed the stage when he brightened sidelines and envigorated the people that he met there,” leaving this world on April 11th 2011. The St.Bridgid’s clubman won a senior hurling championship medal in 1978 at the age of 49.Indeed he played up to the age of 58. He was the St.Brigid’s county board delegate for many years and while he played football for Round Towers, Ellistown and St.Patricks his primary game was hurling. Honoured by Kildare GAA in 1995 with a Hall of Fame award and a lifetime achievement award in 2007 at the Kildare sports awards. “Ger had another career as a hurling reporter, writing reports for the local papers on games that no one else would have bothered with. It was thankless work but that was the extent of his passion for the game. He didn’t romanticise and he could cut anyone down to size but it was only because he cared about the game.” “He was always full of stories and when I think of all the times I stood beside him on sidelines in the past twelve years, I picture the two of us smiling. He never made you feel like your presence was a burden.” “You would look forward to the match when you saw him there.” So “that was how I came to know him, and over time, it was how I came to love him. For all the times he made me smile, I’ll shed a tear to remember him by.” Excerpts taken from Ger Tiernan, A Tribute by Brendan Coffey, printed originally in the Kildare Nationalist April 2011.

Poc Fada Winners Naas teenager Jack Sheridan left it to his final puck of the night to claim the county Poc Fada title and the Gearóid Ó Tiarnáin trophy at Maynooth GAA on Wednesday night. Six different clubs were represented with the lead changing four times through the three rounds. Celbridge's Niall Lanigan held the lead going into the final round until Moorefield's James Donnelly went clear, only to see his puck overtaken by county minor 'keeper Sheridan. Only five metres or so separated the top four. For the first time both camogie and hurling events took place together and in the senior ladies event Sinead Gormley of Cappagh again left it to her last puck to claim the title. Both the adult winners went on to represent Kildare in the Leinster finals in July. There were ten clubs represented in the under 14 girls final which saw Ardclough's Holly Tynan out puck the rest of the field with local girl Sarah Doyle Ryan in second. In the under 16 boys there were sixteen competitors but Naas' goalkeeper Jeff Keane made it a double on the night for the county town as he pucked to victory ahead of Leixlip's Jack Travers U-16 boys poc fada: 1.  Jeff Keane – Naas 2.  Jack Travers – Leixlip 3.  Kevin Foley – Sallins Senior men poc fada 1.  Jack Sheridan – Naas 2.  James Donnelly – Moorefield 3.  Niall Lanigan – Celbridge

Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014

Ros Glas Hurling History Ros Glas club was founded in 1974 in the town of Monasterevin. The club at the beginning started with two teams at under 14 and under 16 in football. Hurling was introduced through the CBS Boys Primary School. The club catered for both Football and Hurling at under age level and was successful in both codes. The football clubs in the area took over the running of underage football which left Ros Glas just catering for Hurling. With the success of the underage teams at hurling it was

then decided to enter an adult team in the Kildare championship and leagues competitions. To the surprise of longer formed clubs in the County and Ros Glas itself, they won the Junior Championship in 1983 and then again in 1986. This success continued, with the junior league and championship in 2003 and again most recently the intermediate championship in 2009 The minors also tasted championship glory with South Kildare the same year.

Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014

2014: That was the year that was! Ian Baker (Liffey Champion) WAS IT A GOOD YEAR FOR HURLING IN KILDARE? Without exception, 2014 has to be the pinnacle year for Kildare hurling to date. Two first-ever All-Irelands with two relatively young sides with so much potential to achieve more. However, the hurling at club level, particularly at intermediate and junior grades, needs to be seriously assessed. It’s simply not up to standard from a skills point of view or an organizational standpoint. Many clubs are suffering and there seems to be little in the way of plans or assistance. If you look at the players, and the parishes they came from, Kildare won their recent All-Irelands off the back of the last fifteen/ twenty years of hard-work, dedication and training in their schools and their clubs. If that infrastructure is not constantly assessed then it’ll have all been for nothing. Ask yourself why are the Kilkenny’s and Tipperary’s always producing teams of quality? So, in the short term, yes, a magnificent year, but in the long-term, the overall hurling scene in Kildare is slipping. HURLING HIGHLIGHT OF 2014? Undoubtedly the highlight of the year was the manner in which the Kildare senior hurlers won their first-ever Christy Ring All-Ireland title against the favorites Kerry in Croke Park. HURLER OF THE YEAR? Gerry Keegan without a shadow of a doubt. A shoe-in for another All-Star. WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2015 FOR KILDARE HURLING? Two more AllIrelands, and a proper crack at Liam McCarthy qualification… COUNTY FINAL PREDICTIONS: Senior – Celbridge, on form. Junior – Ros Glas, on heart

Cormac O’Malley (Freelance Journalist) WAS IT A GOOD YEAR FOR HURLING IN KILDARE? Without a shadow of a doubt. Relegation might have been a blip on the early season radar but that was made up for spectacularly throughout the rest of the year. The one qualm was the GAA decision to play the Liam McCarthy play-off just a week later but that's for another day.

HURLING HIGHLIGHT OF 2014? Without a doubt the Christy Ring Cup win over Kerry, very closely followed by the 21's finally getting over the line. HURLER OF THE YEAR? So many to choose from, but Gerry Keegan just gets the nod for his pivotal roles in both All Ireland triumphs. WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2015 FOR KILDARE HURLING ? A real run at the league and the continued rise to prominence of Kildare's underage hurlers. COUNTY FINAL PREDICTIONS: Senior – Celbridge. Junior – Éire Óg/Corrachoill

John Ryan (Freelance Journalist) WAS IT A GOOD YEAR FOR HURLING IN KILDARE? Winning one All Ireland would make any year a good year but to win two, and two so close to one another in Croke Park and Thurles, makes it even more special. After all the hard luck stories, pain and disappointment, both the Senior and U-21 overcame plenty of recent adversity to finally reach the Holy Grail. However, the club scene needs addressing... the gap between the stronger and weaker teams is continuing to widen at a worrying rate. HURLING HIGHLIGHT OF 2014? Watching Neil O Muineachain lead the county seniors up the steps of the Cusack Stand in Croke Park to accept the Christy Ring Cup - just rewards for a group who never gave up. HURLER OF THE YEAR? Gerry Keegan (Celbridge). WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2015 FOR KILDARE HURLING ? Continued development of minor and U-21 players to supplement a senior panel whose profile is at its highest in years. Kildare have got to build on the Christy Ring and U-21 All Ireland successes. Getting out of Division 3A in the NHL is also a must! COUNTY FINAL PREDICTIONS: Senior – Celbridge. Junior - Éire Óg/Corrachoill

Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014

STRIVING FOR THE PERFECT 10 Having won their 9th Senior Hurling title in 2003, Coill Dubh have spent the last 11 years trying to make it 10. Having contested and lost finals in ’04, ’05, ’07, ’09, and 2010, title number 10 has proven to be most elusive thus far. Since 2003, the team has been in a period of transition, with some of the older soldiers making way for young blood. The current team is brimming with players who have starred in the club championship and for various Kildare teams in recent years, but have still yet to earn their first county championship. The introduction of the Tony Carew

cup as the prize for the Senior Hurling Championship has given everyone in Coill Dubh a renewed impetus to bridge the gap from 2003. The team that lined out against Éire-Óg Corrachoill in the semi -finals had an average age of 26. Youth and experience aim to complement each other. Celbridge appear to have taken over Coill Dubh’s mantle as the dominant team in Kildare Hurling, but as we in Coill Dubh know from experience, all things must come to an end, and even the best of players can’t go on forever. Here’s to hoping that 2014 will see an end to the drought, and Coill Dubh can finally complete their perfect 10.

coill dubh trivia There are three sets of brothers on today’s panel; Damien and Chris Byrne, Jonathan and Thomas Byrne, and Shane and Jamie Kenna. Selector Ronan Byrne is the holder of 9 senior hurling medals. He was also the player manager when Coill Dubh last won the Senior Championship in 2003. When Coill Dubh won their first Senior title in 1987, 10 of today’s starting 15 hadn’t even been born. Coill Dubh is a club of dual players, on the panel we have players who play football with; Allenwood, Caragh, Johnstownbridge, Robertstown, Sallins and St. Kevin’s. Coill Dubh have a history of fathers and sons appearing together in county finals. The late Tony Carew played in finals with Trevor, Niall and Tom, Richie and Donnacha Hayden were both panellists in 1993, John Byrne played in finals with Thomas and Jonathan. Today Noel and Ryan Casey join that group. Three members of the Coill Dubh team have been victorious captains for Kildare under 21 hurlers. Declan 20

Flaherty lifted the cup in 2014, Mark Delaney in 2013, and Thomas Byrne in 2008. Coill Dubh are the holders of 9 Senior Hurling titles, four men in the club hold 9 medals. They are John, Ronan and Colm Byrne and James O’Donnell. Goalkeeper Damien Byrne is somewhat of a twinkle toes! He will be dancing in Strictly Ballyteague on October 18th. He’ll face stern competition from team physio Rita Moran, and club secretary Leonie Delaney.

Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014

2014 brings to an end long wait in Kildare hurling  By John Ryan  A LOT has happened in the years since Kildare’s All Ireland ‘B’ success of 2004 and this season’s double triumph in Croke Park and Thurles respectively. In those ten years since, the face of the world as we know it has changed considerably. Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden and the rest of their like (well, those that we know of) have been removed from their pedestals and made their exit, although to this day the American’s continue to squabble with just about everyone and anyone on the international stage who threatens to breath the same air as them. That doesn’t look like ending any time soon. Closer to home the Celtic Tiger has taken its first and last breaths, although there are mutterings that it is once again rising from the ashes, while the emergence of Facebook and the social media age has transformed the way we view and hear the happenings of day to day life. In sport, the once idolised seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, has been ousted as drug-taking cheat and duly stripped of all those titles after confessing that he doped his way to those triumphs, while on the green fields of home Kilkenny have won seven of the last ten Liam McCarthy cups to rightly be able to call themselves the greatest GAA team ever. So much more has occurred both locally, nationally and internationally during those intervening years that a small article like this wouldn’t be able to do justice in recalling, never mind detailing. But there is room to remember those

lofty days of early summer and early autumn when Kildare hurling grabbed the headlines for all the right reasons once again. So often the bridesmaid and never the bride, that worrying trend was finally reversed when the Class of 2014, led by team captain Niall Ó Múineacháin, climbed the steps of the Cusack Stand to raise aloft the Christy Ring Cup, which in 2005 replaced the aforementioned All Ireland ‘B’. After years of heart break and hard luck stories, none least than the 2007 final mauling at the hands of Westmeath, Kildare finally reached the Promised www.kildaregaa.ie

Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014 Land with victory over a much-fancied Kerry; first half goals from Gerry Keegan and goalkeeper, Paul Dermody (penalty), as well as second half majors from Ray McLoughney and Bernard Deay, setting Brian Lawlor’s Lilywhites on their way to a memorable 4-18 to 2-22 win. It was a moment to bring grown men to tears. Yet, if we are to be honest with ourselves, such a situation never looked likely if league form was anything to go by. Kildare, playing in Division 2B, amassed just a single point from five games and were duly returned to 3B when all was said and done. Performances were hit miss at best but results were consistent. Still, credit to Mr Lawlor who refused to see anything but the bigger picture; he and his players recovered their season with wins over Wicklow, Down and Meath to duly deliver in memorable fashion. It was something of a similar story with

the U-21s. This was their third successive final after once again proving themselves too strong in the provincial ‘B’ cham pionship for the third successive season. In their minds, however, were the scars of defeats in both the 2012 and ’13 All Ireland finals, the most harrowing of them coming 12 months ago when they had victory snatched from their grasp by a late Kerry rally. This time around there was to be no mistake against Roscommon. A return of nine points from team captain and man of the match, Gerry Keegan, as well as a 44th minute goal from Coill Dubh’s Ryan Casey, proved vital ingredients to Noel McMahon’s and Kildare’s 1-14 to 1-11 win at the home of hurling. On this evidence the future is clearly bright and definitely white. Over to you now Celbridge and Coill Dubh to bring down the curtain on probably the most successful season ever in Kildare hurling.

Kildare Hurling Championship Finals 2014

Kildare’s unloved gain the reward Lightning start gives hurlers a cherished All-Ireland Title

By Gearóid Ó Tiarnáin Kildare 3-14   Mayo 3-7 One well known Sunday newspaper described this as a ‘disappointing affair’ but of course it all depends on what the writer was expecting. The hurling fraternity in Mayo and Kildare and all the weaker hurling areas have long since realised the wisdom of the ninth Beatitude: Blessed are they who expect not, for they shall not be disappointed. Consequently, they are thankful for even the small blessings and believe me qualifying for an All-Ireland final especially in Croke Park, is not just a small blessing for Kildare or Mayo, it is the nearest thing to heaven on earth that they could ever dream of! For the winners it is the achievement of all those dreams for, as Morgan Lalor reminded the media in his post-match interview, no matter how humble the competition may be in the eyes of the media of the non-committed , the players, mentors and all concerned, put just as much effort into their preparations as the top counties vying for the McCarthy cup. The winners were making their own little bit of history on a day when all the focus was,

deservedly, on Westmeath’s great achievement. Thirty years ago the Lily Whites had won their first ever Senior ‘B’ hurling title. On Saturday they finished off this competition on a winning note. Not that that bit of history meant much to the players on the field. This was their day, the day to reap the rewards of all their preparation and they did it in style against a Mayo team who, despite a dreadful start, made them fight every inch of the way, in a game which could never have disappointed even the most critical in the standard of sportsmanship displayed by both sides. Playing into the Canal end, Kildare go off to a flying start with captain Adrian McAndrew threatening to destroy the Westerners single handedly as he rattled off 4 points and put Eamon Denieffe through for the middle one within 6 minutes. May reacted quickly to the threat and send in Belmullet’s Paddy Barrett at that point to police the rampant McAndrew but, although Barrett certainly made a noticeable difference, Kildare went two further points ahead, per Colm Buggy, before the Westerners got their name on the scoreboard. Not that they had failed to create scoring opportunities, both from play and from placed

Kildare’s unloved gain the reward continued balls, but, there radar was, without doubt, ‘gone on the blink’ for most of the opening half when they ran up a total of 11 wides. If even some of those bad misses had been converted the winners could have been in serious trouble. For whatever reason, and Barrett was only part of it, after that opening scoring blitz, Kildare failed to raise another flag until the 25th minute, by which time Mayo had closed the gap to just two points after the losers’ Man of the Match, Keith Higgins had pointed a ’65 and a free and the other member of the Higgins clan, centre forward Pierce, had broken through to send a rasper past Cormac Leahy for a very acute angle. John Brennan got the winners scoring machine back into gear with a long range free and when Tony Murphy raised two green flags in quick succession- the first following a defence-splitting solo run and the second when he flashed the ball past the Mayo ‘keeper after a shot from McAndrew had been parriedKildare were coasting with the end of the first half insight. A Mayo penalty, blasted to the Kildare net by Stephen Broderick, and another’65 converted by Keith Higgins made it clear that the Connaught men had no intention of throwing in the towel but an injury time point from Billy White sent the winners in at the break six points clear on a 2-9 to 2-3 scoreline. Mayo never really threatened to bridge that gap in a quiet second half as both sides added four points to their totals in a tit for tat pattern of scoring over the first 30 minutes until Brendan Byrne, who had come in at the three-quarter stage for an off-form Tom Carew, broke through for a point and a goal in quick succession to widen the gap to 10 points in the dying moments of the game. A consolation goal from Anthony Healy, another second half replacement, in the third minute of injury time served as a scant consolation for Mayo, and when Armagh referee, Gerry Devlin, blew the final whistle, the Kildare celebrations began! Nobody could claim, that the game was a classic and, if anybody wanted to criticise, he or she would not be short of ammunition. But this week should be one for praise and appreciation of what has been achieved not just by the winning panel but by their counterparts in Mayo and throughout all the

Adrian McAndrew in action against Mayo in the Senior B Hurling All-Ireland. areas where hurling is not just a game but more of a religion based on Hope (of getting even more recognition), Faith (that perseverance will prevail and that, some day, both of our national games will get equal acceptance in all 32 counties) and Charity (the spirit to forgive the ‘unbelievers’ who don’t realise what they are missing). As they had been against Wicklow in the semi final, the Kildare defence was outstanding. The half-back line of Kieran Divilly, whose point from a free fully 100 yards from the target must have been one of the highlights of the game, David Harney, a tower of strength throughout and Richie Hoban, who played his heart out until injured in the dying minutes of the game, was the launching pad for many of the Kildare attacks. Brennan and Joe Dempsey worked like a pair of Trojans in the midfield area and what greater tribute could be paid to the attack than that provide by the cold statistic that all but two Kildare scores came from play with Murphy’s two goals heading the list. Kildare: C. Leahy, S. Crowe, D. Lahart, P. Reidy, K. Divilly 0-1f, D. Harney, R. Hoban, J. Brennan 0-1, J. Dempsey, C. Buggy 0-2, E. Denieffe 0-1, B. White 0-3 1f, T. Murphy 2-0, A McAndrew 0-5, T. Carew. Subs: P.Keegan for Lahart, B. Byrne 1-1 for Carew, S. Joyce for Denieffe, B. Maher for Hoban, A. Quinn for Murphy This article originally appeared in the Kildare Nationalist on 30th July 2004.
