Kildare Intermediate Football Championship Final 2014

History of Alymer Gaels GAA Club Aylmer Gaels was founded in January 2013, by the amalgamation of Allenwood GFC and Ballyteague GFC for underage football from the age of U14 up to and including U21. The two neighbouring clubs took the decision to amalgamate with the aim of improving the standard of football in the local area. Fielding teams in the highest grade possible, at each age group, it was felt, would be of huge benefit to both clubs and would in time provide the clubs with the best players available in the locality. Joe Jacob, Allenwood was elected the first Chairman. Secretary elected was Catherine Murphy, Ballyteague, with Enda Moran, Allenwood as the first Treasurer. Ciaran Mattimoe, Ballyteague was chosen as the Bord na Nog Rep. In its first year of existence 2013, the club had a reasonable level of success. The U14 panel reached the Feile B final but were defeated by Eadestown and the also reached the U14 Div 2 league final losing to Kilcock. The U16 panel reached the Div 3 semi final losing to Monasterevin, but went on to win the C championship defeating Leixlip. The Minor panel had a reasonable run in the league and just missed a quarter final spot in the championship. The U15 panel had a great run in the winter league finishing top of their group but unfortunately lost out in the final to St. Edwards

in October. The U21 panel which included some minors won the U21 B championship in a thrilling final, defeating hot favourites St. Laurence’s, a great way to end the year. The committee were returned for the 2014 season and preparations began early, with two U14 panels and a minor panel in training. Our U14 team 1 won the B Feile and went on to represent Kildare in the Feile finals in Galway and Roscommon at the end of June. While having a great weekend with their host Club Athenry and playing well in their games, they didn’t qualify for the finals. They also reached the Div 1 league semi final losing out to Carbury . Our U14 team 2 reached the Feile D semi final losing to Moorefield and the Div 6 league final losing to Sallins. The U16 panel had a very good run in Div 2 of the league reaching the final which they lost to Carbury. This panel also reached the semi final of the U16 championship losing to Sallins . The Minor panel had a very good run in Div 3 of the league only losing one game, to reach the final in which they defeated Rheban . Which brings us to today and the Minor B championship final. We wish the panel and the mentors the very best of luck and we hope that this fine group of young lads can do the league and cup double. Catherine Murphy, Runaí

AYLME R G AELS G F C Aylmer Gaels would like to thank everyone who helped this Minor Panel reach the County Final today. We would especially like to thank Allenwood GFC and Ballyteague GFC for the use of their fields and club rooms. John Doyle and Brian Kinahan for their help with training. We would also like to thank the following for their kind sponsorship during the year, Kieran Dunne, L&K Dunne Nurseries, Allen. Ciaran Mattimore, Londis, Naas. Kildare Intermediate Football Championship Final 2014

Casey’s Championship Craving By BRENDAN COFFEY, Sports Editor, Kildare Nationalist Football has come full circle for Willie Casey. In 1996 he won a county medal on the subs bench with Eadestown but even after back-to-back final defeats in 2001 and 2002, it doesn’t count. Sunday’s intermediate final against Round Towers is all that matters now for the 37-year-old. “I broke my leg in late ‘95. I was only coming back on to the squad in ‘96 so I don’t really count it, even though I was back fit. I knew myself there was no chance of me coming on,” says Casey, who was a teenager at the time. He had just come through his first year of college at Dublin City University (DCU) but his efforts to keep fit during the off-season backfired. Playing an internal soccer league with the first years against the fourth years at DCU, Casey’s enthusiasm proved his downfall. “I was a GAA-head playing soccer,” he says trying to convey the image of a no-nonsense defender getting to grips with the nuances of a slightly more elegant game. “I went to clear a ball and the fourth year guy was just too quick for me. I pulled across him as he ran by. He caught me on the side of my knee and I got swung around. I broke my leg above my knee and knocked my knee out of place. It was just awkwardness. If you’d seen me playing Gaelic, you’d know.” Casey the Gaelic football player was the ideal clubman: driven and determined yet smart enough to realise his own limitations. He gave football everything even when football couldn’t give him the same in return. An inter-county career was always just beyond his reach. “I did all the slogging,” he says of his involvement with county panels at underage level. “I would have been involved in squads but I would have been dropped from the 35 or the 30. There was lads there better than me. I

Photo: Adrian Melia

wouldn’t have any qualms about that. If I was good enough I would have been selected.” Instead Casey’s life has been inextricably linked with Eadestown. He has been a certainty on the starting team for the guts of 20 years since making his senior debut as a 17-year-old in 1995. The high came early, too soon for him to fully appreciate, but there have been so many lows that he cherishes the chance to play in another county final on Sunday. “This could be my last year because the pace of the game, the training and the dieting. I’d like a Mikado with my cup of tea,” he says, highlighting a habit the modern game frowns upon. “We’ve gone through bad times but it’s great to come out the other end just by keeping going. It’s very satisfying just to make the final. It means a lot more to me.” It’s easy to see why. Captain in 2001 and 2002 when Eadestown lost back-to-back finals against Rathangan and Celbridge, Casey was there through the darkest days of ‘09 when they lost every competitive game bar one. www.kildaregaa.ie

Kildare Intermediate Football Championship Final 2014

Casey’s Championship Craving – continued “It was very difficult,” Casey says of that season. “That year we might have been getting eight, nine lads training. We didn’t have a manager the start of the year so we were training ourselves. We were asking lads who hadn’t played since primary school to come out just so we had a team.” Despite the dire circumstances, there was still a grim determination about the players. “Lads didn’t want to be known for taking the club back to junior,” says Casey. “I would be motivated by trying to play at the highest level I can. To go down lower is just an easy option.” In the end, Eadestown retained their intermediate status courtesy of a last-gasp goal in the relegation final against Grangenolvan. It was their only victory of the season. Five years later, Grangenolvan are still struggling to get out of junior while Eadestown are on the brink of a championship title and promotion to the senior ranks. “It’d be great just to win something. We won a Division 3 league in 2010 and that was like my All-Ireland for two or three years, I could put my name down for winning something,” says Casey.

As to what sustains him to keep playing at 37? “The way I look at it, you have to do something to keep fit. I like the craic among the squad. To be honest I’d have no friends if I didn’t play football.” A software engineer with Tickets.ie, football has been a way of life for Casey. His connection to Eadestown stretches back through the generations as far as his grandfather while his father, Liam, although originally a Moorefield man, won a senior championship with them in 1970 – the club’s one and only senior success. “The senior team is the pinnacle of the club so it’s important that the senior team do well,” says Casey, who has also served as secretary of the club. “It’s the only thing really (in Eadestown). I know we have Kilteel village. There’s no real centre in Eadestown. It’s a hinterland, people would mix in different areas. It’s (the club) the only place where people can meet others in the area. It’s a great community thing.” This year’s campaign represents something significant for everyone but Eadestown’s veteran full-back has more at stake. Victory would complete a life-long journey for the redoubtable Willie Casey.

Kildare Intermediate Football Championship Final 2014

Round Towers GFC was formed late in the year 1887. At that time they were known as St. John’s Gaelic Club. On Sunday January 15th 1888 St John’s played Rathangan Wolfe Tones in Kildare Town and the match ended in a scoreless draw. This was the first recorded Gaelic Football match in Kildare Town. Since that beginning Kildare Town has produced both great teams and players. The teams have gone under the following names, St. John’s, Sons of St Brigid, The Shamrocks, Kildare Town and St Patrick’s but it is Round Towers GFC that the Kildare Town team is best known. Round Towers have contested 20 Senior Football finals and have achieved victory in 10 of those finals. Round Towers last victory in the Kildare Senior Football final was in 2003 with a score line of Round Towers 2-14 Kilcock 1-9. Towers have previously contested the Kildare Intermediate final on one occasion in 1988 when they defeated Suncroft by a score of 2-6 to 0-6 in a hard fought encounter. Round Towers have a superb history of their clubmen representing their county with William Squires Gannon making history by becoming the first ever GAA captain to receive the Sam Maguire Trophy in 1928 and Glen Ryan captaining Kildare to Leinster Final Victories on two occasions and to the All Ireland Final in 1998. There is no doubt that Round Towers success does have a high position in the history of Kildare GAA but that does not guarantee any future success so in this regard the Round Towers underage programme is vital for its future. Every Saturday 170 to 200 children between the ages of 4 and 11 both boys and girls attend Round Towers training facility at St Brigid’s Park in Kildare Town under the tutelage of the underage coaching team established over the last few years. It is quite clear that success

in the future depends on the present and new players and families are always welcome to come and join us. role of honour Senior Champions 1927,1929,1930,1938,195 4,1959,1961,1996,1998 and 2003. Intermediate Champions 1988. Minor Champions 1946,1951,1954,2012. Under 21 Champions 1990,2006 All club members, friends and family’s wish today’s panel and management team every success in their quest for victory today versus Eadestown. Kildare Intermediate Football Championship Final 2014

A Brief History of Eadestown GAA Records from 1890 show that Eadestown Seaghan O’Neills had forty (40) members with officers listed as James Walsh, John Byrne, John Walsh and Joseph Malone. Rathmore Rovers played Maddenstown five times in the Kildare Junior final of 1909. Rathmore lost four of these matches and drew another, but succeeded in getting four replays through various technical objections. Between 1910 and 1912 the name of the team was changed from Rathmore Rovers to Eadestown. Eadestown beat Ballymore to win the Junior League in 1914. A single Junior League final appearance in 1941 (when they were beaten in a replay by Sarsfields) was the highlight of the clubs history until 1960. Ger Headon played for the county in the late forties. In 1960 Eadestown won the Junior Cham pionship from the B division, becoming the first team ever to achieve this success. Tony Hayden was captain of this team. This win in 1960 laid the foundation for the many successes in the following years. Eadestown progressed from Junior B to senior football champions in a ten year period 1960-1970. They were county semifinalists in their very first year in the Senior Championship in 1961. Tony and John Hayden, Christy Magee, and Ned and Pat Grainger came to the attention of the Senior County selectors at this time. Eadestown regraded to Intermediate in 1966 and then won the Intermediate Championship thanks to a great display from Tony Hayden in 1968 defeating Johnstownbridge in the final. Robbie Hill was captain. Eadestown qualified for the 1970 County Senior Championship final with wins over Clane, Raheens and then had a twelve-point win over Castledermot selected side, St. Laurence O’Toole’s in the semi final.. The final swung Eadestown’s way in the thirty fifth minute when Noel Grainger hit the post. Sean Dowling (father of Shane playing today) followed it up with a goal. Noel Grainger captained the team and the performance of Offaly star Larry Coughlan at centrefield alongside Liam Casey (father of Willie and Alan playing today) was a decisive factor in winning the match. 1970 was Eadestowns finest year to date. Eadestown 22

|

www.kildaregaa.ie

then had a few lean years in the 1970s and were regraded right back to Junior B status. With the Kavanaghs,McLoughlins and Tompkins brothers on board they regained senior status in 1983.They won the Junior B championship in 1980. Martin Tompkins was captain of this team. They lost the Junior A final in 1981 to Naas. Eadestown won the Junior A Championship in 1982 defeating Ballymore after two replays. Jay Shaw was captain of this team. Eadestown won the Intermediate Championships in 1983 defeating Castledermot to compete at senior level once more. Ger Kavanagh was the captain and is the current Club Secretary. This was a golden era for the Club. In 1991 Eadestown won the Junior A Championship defeating Kilcullen with Willie Dowling as captain. They won their last Intermediate Championship in 1996 with Dave Kavanagh as captain this time beating St Kevins. In 2001 Eadestown lost an Intermediate Championship final to Rathangan and in 2002 again lost an Intermediate final to Celbridge. Hopefully today will be third time lucky for Eadestown!! In 2006 Eadestown ladies team became All Ireland Junior Club Champions. On the way to this triumph the ladies’ team attracted a large attendance at home to Tuam Stars/Cartoon for the All Ireland quarter final. They defeated Emyvale of Monaghan in the final after a replay. Deirdre Boylan was the captain of this team.. Another proud day for the Parish of Eadestown. The club boast some fantastic underage teams from u/6 to minor both boys and girls. Most of the players playing today have come through the juvenile section of the Club. We are very grateful to all our underage mentors who tirelessly coach our underage children for all competitions year after year. We thank all our sponsors over the years and our current sponsors Haydens (Naas). We wish the management team of Dessie Brennan (Manager),Eamonn Bolton, Ciaran Dowling, Ed Grainger and the team under captain Eddie Conroy the very best today in this final. Come on the Town!!

Kildare Intermediate Football Championship Final 2014

Mick Dowling – All-Ireland Handball Champion Mick Dowling has always distinguished himself as an outstanding all around sports man. For example, he has won Junior and Intermediate football titles with Ballymore Eustace; has finished runner-up in All Ireland Badminton competitions and has won Captain’s prizes in Golf. But it is for his handball achievements that he will be remembered as one of Kildare’s greatest players. All-Ireland Club titles in 1981 and 1982.were followed by the All-Ireland Junior Hardball singles title in 1985 and the Senior Doubles title in 1990. Michael then took a prolonged break from the game but his return to handball since 2010 has been spectacular. Dowling has dominated the Golden Masters division in the 40 x 20 court, suffering just one loss in singles in 5 years. He is unbeaten in singles in Leinster, winning his 5th consecutive

Leinster title in 2014. He went on to win both the singles and doubles All-Ireland titles (His doubles partner is Padraig Maguire from the Leixlip club). In the 60 x 30 court, he won the Golden Masters Softball title in 2012 and again in 2014. He also won the Masters Hard ball AllIreland title in the big court in 2013... In short, Mick has won 8 All-Ireland titles and 2 Golden Masters Open National titles since his return to handball in 2010 and his successes span the 3 main handball codes - 60x30 soft and hardball and 40 x 20. He is, of course, a chip off the old block, for his father, Mickey, was a multiple winner of the Senior All-Ireland Hardball Championship in 1930’s and 40’s. And now the World Championships in Canada in 2015 are firmly on the agenda for this great handball player from the Ballymore Eustace club.

All-Ireland glory for Kildare Handball Sponsor! A name that is synonymous with Kildare Handball is Maynooth Autos who have been the main sponsor of Kildare Handball for almost a decade now. The man behind Maynooth Autos is Niall Leavy, a lifetime handball player, com mittee member and promoter of Maynooth Handball. We are happy to report that in the last Sunday in September Niall joined the ranks of All Ireland winners by winning the Golden Masters B Doubles in the 60x30 code with his partner Paul Ruane also of the Maynooth Handball club. This is a great achievement and ends the long wait in Maynooth Club for an All-Ireland 60x30 handball title. Niall and Paul started the campaign early in June by getting down to serious training and travelled to Ballymore Eustace at least twice a week for training sessions with Anthony Campbell and Dermot Howard who in turn won out their division with some great wins to take All Ireland glory! This training was invaluable and sharpened the duo up to be able to hold their own with the toughest of opponents. Getting a bye in the first round meant that they met na Fianna pairing of Kevin & Martin McKenna in the semi-final, a game that they controlled from the start and this got them off to a winning start. This brought them to the Leinster final and a meeting, for the second year running, with the Murphy brothers of Wexford, Stephen and Brendan. It proved to be a real test of the Kildare pair but unlike last year, on this occasion they would not be denied and 27

|

www.kildaregaa.ie

The jubilant Kildare duo holding their All Ireland medals. with a solid game of skill and consistency proved too much for the Wexford pair. As there was no representative from Ulster there was no All Ireland semi-final for the Kildare pair and they had to wait until the last Sunday in September to meet the other finalists from Limerick, Tim O’Shea and Donal Hayes. As in the Leinster final, Niall and Paul played a very simple but direct brand of handball with a minimum amount of errors which proved to be too much for Limerick and whereas Limerick put up a strong challenge in the second game the Kildare pairing stayed focused and finished the game the stronger, winning by 21-17.
