THE ULTIMATE LIVING

INDOOR OUTDOOR LIVING 2020 Lifestyle Essentials

(BPT) - 2020 outdoor living trends are all about enjoying your backyard alfresco but with the comfort and ease you expect from your indoor spaces. Today's outdoor spaces are transforming into an extension of the home. The current outdoor design also takes into account the look and feel of your entire home, including the interior and exterior, building materials and surroundings. Connecting with nature: Biophilic design is achieved when natural elements are incorporated into the space, helping people feel connected to the natural environment. It creates a calm, tranquil space and reduces stress. Biophilia makes sense for indoor urban environments needing to bring the outdoors in. Today's homeowners want much more than a grill in the backyard. With aspirations to cook and entertain guests outdoors with everything the best outdoor kitchen can offer, the possibilities are endless.

Sleek, modern design. While it may seem contrary to the more organic approach of biophilic design, the contemporary trend toward sleek, modular furniture can enhance your outdoor space. Modular, sectional pieces with clean lines and streamlined design can be arranged and rearranged to accommodate any natural elements you want to incorporate in your space, or to handle different numbers of guests when entertaining. The minimalist approach to furnishings also allows the natural elements around you to take center stage. Entertaining both night and day. Regardless of the time of day or year, you and your family can relax comfortably in your outdoor sanctuary, thanks to modern technology. Despite fierce opposition from vested interests, she successfully launched a “Clean City, Green City” campaign that reduced littering. Ghafari’s courage has inspired girls and women not only in her community and the wider province, but across the country. In her capacity as a trail-blazer and door-opener for a new generation of young women, she has helped empower the women of Afghanistan.

25 Influential Women of 2020 SECOND WOMAN TO SERVE ON THE SUPREME COURT Leading Figure in Gender-discrimination | Notorious R.B.G.

Born: March 15, 1933, Brooklyn transitioned on September 18, 2020, in Washington, D.C., Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Justice of the United States was a notorious warrior for women's inclusion, rights, and parity. Better known as the "The Notorious RBG" was nominated by Democratic U.S. President Bill Clinton, June 14, 1993, to the Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice Byron White. Her confirmation hearings were quick and relatively uncontroversial. She was endorsed unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee and confirmed by the full Senate on August 3 by a vote of 96–3. On the Court, Ginsburg became known for her active participation in oral arguments and her habit of wearing jabots, or collars, with her judicial robes, some of which expressed a symbolic meaning. Early in her tenure on the Court, Ginsburg wrote the majority’s opinion in United States v. Virginia (1996), which held that the men-only admission policy of a state-run university, the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), violated the equal protection clause.

RUTH BADER GINSBURG ASSOCIATE JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES

Rejecting VMI’s contention that its program of military-focused education was unsuitable for women, Ginsburg noted that the program was in fact unsuitable for the vast majority of Virginia college students regardless of gender. “Generalizations about ‘the way women are,’ estimates of what is appropriate for most women, no longer justify denying opportunity to women whose talent and capacity place them outside the average description,” she wrote. In 1970 Ginsburg became professionally involved in the issue of gender equality when she was asked to introduce and moderate a law student panel discussion on the topic of “women’s liberation as the leading figure in gender-discrimination litigation. In 1972 she became founding counsel of the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project and coauthored a law-school casebook on gender discrimination. In the same year, she became the first tenured female faculty member at Columbia Law School. In 1980 Democratic U.S. Pres. Jimmy Carter appointed Ginsburg to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington, D.C. While serving as a judge on the D.C. Circuit, Ginsburg developed a reputation as a pragmatic liberal with a keen attention to detail. In part because of her increasing outspokenness, Ginsburg became, during the Obama administration (2009–17), a progressive and feminist folk hero. Inspired by some of her dissents, a second-year law student at New York University created a Tumblr blog entitled “Notorious R.B.G.”— a play on “Notorious B.I.G.,” the stage name of the American rapper Christopher Wallace—which became a popular nickname for Ginsburg among her admirers. 25 Influential Women of 2020 VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Kamala Harris, the first Black and Indian American woman Vice Presidential Nominee and the first Black and Indian American woman to represent California in the United States Senate. Kamala Harris grew up believing in the promise of America and fighting to make sure that promise is fulfilled for all Americans. Kamala’s father immigrated to the U.S. from Jamaica to study economics and her mother immigrated from India. Kamala’s mother told her growing up “Don’t sit around and complain about things, do something,” which is what drives Kamala every single day.

KAMALA HARRIS UNITED STATES SENATOR VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE

Kamala started fighting for working families in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, where she focused on prosecuting child sexual assault cases. From there, she became the first Black woman elected as San Francisco’s District Attorney. In this position, she started a program to provide first-time drug offenders second chances with the opportunity to earn a high school degree and find a job. In 2010, Kamala became the first Black woman to be elected California Attorney General, overseeing the country’s second largest Justice Department, only behind the U.S. Department of Justice. In this capacity, she managed a $735 million budget and oversaw more than 4,800 attorneys and other employees.

As California Attorney General, Kamala fought for families and won a $20 billion settlement for California homeowners against big banks that were unfairly foreclosing on homes. Kamala worked to protect Obamacare, helped win marriage equality for all, defended California’s landmark climate change law and won a $1.1 billion settlement against a for-profit education company that scammed students and veterans. Kamala also fought for California communities and prosecuted transnational gangs who drove human trafficking, gun smuggling and drug rings. Since being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016, Kamala has introduced and co-sponsored legislation to help the middle class, increase the minimum wage to $15, reform cash bail, and defend the legal rights of refugees and immigrants. Kamala serves on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence that deals with the nation’s most sensitive national security and international threats. She also serves on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee where she oversees the federal government’s response to natural disasters and emergencies. On the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kamala has held Trump administration officials accountable and was a powerful voice against Trump’s conservative judicial nominations. Photo credit: VF.com

But before she was a mother — or a wife, lawyer, or public servant — she was Fraser and Marian Robinson’s daughter. The Robinsons lived in a brick bungalow on the South Side of Chicago. Fraser was a pump operator for the Chicago Water Department, and despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at a young age, he hardly ever missed a day of work. Marian stayed home to raise Michelle and her older brother Craig, skillfully managing a busy household filled with love, laughter, and important life lessons.

A product of Chicago public schools, Michelle Robinson studied sociology and African-American studies at Princeton University. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1988, she joined the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she later met Barack Obama, the man who would become the love of her life. After a few years, Mrs. Obama decided her true calling was working with people to serve their communities and their neighbors. She served as assistant commissioner of planning and development in Chicago’s City Hall before becoming the founding executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program that prepares youth for public service. In 1996, Mrs. Obama joined the University of Chicago with a vision of bringing campus and community together. As Associate Dean of Student Services, she developed the university’s first community service program, and under her leadership as Vice President of Community and External Affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center, volunteerism skyrocketed. As First Lady, Mrs. Obama continued her efforts to support and inspire young people.

CHEF CURTIS STONE the new Bosch FlameSelect

“For quite some time, the thought of bringing technology into the kitchen felt a little out of place for me. However, as someone who is always on the go, connected appliances have really become a time-saving luxury that help me find more time to dedicate to the most important things in life, like my family. “What I really love about Bosch home appliances is they believe in technology that is simple to use, which is why their Home Connect appliances are at the top of my list of 2020 kitchen necessities. It’s so convenient, I can preheat my wall oven remotely so make-ahead meals are ready for the oven as soon as I get home. I also manage household chores from my smartphone, so I never have to worry about little things like reordering dishwasher detergent tabs or whether I shut off the hood lights, automation like this are kind of a dream.” “One of my biggest tips when preparing a meal for a crowd is to keep your station (or kitchen) clean throughout the cooking process... I love that I can place my dirty utensils, mixing bowls, and even large pots and pans right into my connected Bosch dishwasher... When hosting, I like to cook within the season and keep it simple." MORE CHEF CURTIS AND THE BOSCH Whether cooking for his family, hosting a dinner party or serving up Michelin-starred dishes, Chef Curtis Stone believes in cooking smarter, not harder.

I always look forward to cooking with asparagus every spring, and after mastering the kitchen, this mouthwatering, herded steak dinner will be ready to serve before you know it. Enjoy!” Pan-Seared Ribeye Steaks with Roasted Asparagus Serves: 4 | Prep Time: 10 minutes | Cook Time: 10-15 minutes | Ingredients: Roasted Parmesan Asparagus 1 bunch asparagus, ends trimmed

Having tested, mastered and embraced many of 2020’s kitchen advancements, Stone shares four ways to master the kitchen this year with maximum flavor and minimum effort.

1 tablespoon olive oil 2 ounces Parmesan cheese, finely grated Lemon wedges

From a chef’s perspective, precision, power and efficiency are key to creating flavorful dishes that will keep your guests coming back for more. This is one of the reasons why I love the new Bosch FlameSelect gas cooktop.

Ingredients: Butter-Basted, Pan-Seared Ribeye Steaks 2 boneless ribeye steaks (1 inch thick; 12 ounces) Kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 4-6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature 4 garlic cloves, bruised 6 large sprigs fresh thyme or 2 small sprigs fresh rosemary

WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE ENTERTAINING SECRET? Whether it’s a big dinner party or an intimate gathering, cleaning as you go prevents clutter that may get in your way and simplifies postmeal cleanup, which is crucial when you have guests waiting for you and your food.

Method 1. Using Convection Bake, preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Place rack in center of oven. 2. Toss asparagus in oil on a large baking sheet. Line asparagus in one even row lengthwise over sheet pan. Sprinkle Parmesan evenly. 3. Preheat 2 large skillets on cook-top over high heat. Meanwhile, place asparagus in oven, roasting for 8-10 minutes, or until crisp tender. 4. Just before cooking, pat steak dry with paper towel and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add oil to hot skillets, then add steaks. Cook steaks for 4 minutes, or until dark brown and caramelized on bottom. 5. Turn steaks over and cook for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-high. Add butter, garlic, and thyme to skillets. Use spoon to baste melted butter over steaks as they cook, for about 2 more minutes for medium-rare doneness. 6. Transfer steaks to rack set on a sheet pan and let rest for about 4 minutes (half the cooking time). 7. Slice each steak against grain using sharp knife. Divide steak slices and roasted asparagus among 4 plates. Serve with lemon wedges.

WOMEN & MONEY

(BPT) - As the ongoing coronavirus pandemic continues to present health and economic challenges, it is difficult to focus on anything other than the present. It's important, though, not to lose sight of the years ahead and to take steps that can put you in a better position when we emerge on the other side. MetLife's Evolving Retirement Model Study found nearly one in 10 workers (9%) never expect to retire. Many of us are choosing to continue working and, in light of the current situation, some who have already retired, especially those in health care, are even being asked to return to work. What's behind this change? It turns out that it's more than just the current market volatility. Perhaps one of the most significant reasons is the decline in company-financed pensions. Many companies have shifted from defined benefit, or pension, plans, which promise retirees a monthly income benefit for life, to defined contribution (DC) plans. DC plans, such as 401(k)s, are the main source of retirement savings for most workers.

While employers often make contributions to these plans, workers are primarily responsible for their retirement security. There are three key steps you can take now. 1. Create a plan to eliminate debt. 2. Make retirement savings automatic, and don't miss out on "free money." 3. Understand how your retirement savings translates into income. Take the time during your working years to understand how much income you might receive in retirement based on your retirement savings. Having a predictable income can make a big difference and fortunately relief may be in sight. While many employers don't yet offer guaranteed retirement income options in their 401(k) plans, a new law passed at the end of 2019 could change this. That's good news, considering that 95% of workers and retirees say it's important for retirees to have a source of guaranteed retirement income they cannot outlive.

financial tips for teens

WOMEN & MONEY When it comes to economics, many teens’ mouths write checks their knowledge can’t cash. While 93% of American teens say they know how the economy works, 29% have had no economic schooling, according to a survey of 1,000 U.S. teens ages 13-18 by Wakefield Research on behalf of Junior Achievement and the Charles Koch Foundation. “Our programs, which work as a complement to the school curriculum, are written from the perspective of today’s teens and use digital content to help bring economic concepts to life for students,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement USA. Set goals. Managing your money is more meaningful. Weigh needs vs. wants. That means not exceeding your available funds. Get a debit card. Keep track of your purchases in real time. Start a savings habit. Even if only be $10. Protect your privacy. Teaching kids about security is an essential lesson. Enhance Your Wedding Decor Wedding days are meant to be filled with love and celebration, and what better way to ring in the new stage of life as newlyweds. Whether a couple is on a tight budget or picky when it comes to theme ideas, these decorating tips can help add more flair for the big day. Use a natural venue. Many couples choose wedding venues that require immense amounts of resources, consider having the ceremony near a garden or beach with enough natural surroundings to keep guests in awe. Make the cake a centerpiece. Wedding cakes are almost guaranteed to serve as a decorative centerpiece for the reception. Choosing a cake topped with flowers, highlighting bright colors and placing it in a prominent spot at the reception can grab guests’ attention while also keeping them eager for a bite. Choose table accessories that pop and leave guests in amazement.

If you are not having a formal sit-down reception, try using paper lanterns or hanging flowers from the ceiling to create an eye-catching atmosphere to remember. Add classic lighting. At times, finding the right lighting to match the mood of a wedding venue can be tricky. In this case, less may actually be more. Try opting for a classic candlelit ceremony or reception to create a more romantic setting. This can save both money and countless hours spent attempting to configure elaborate light fixtures, and also provide a timeless feel. Place engagement photos around the venue. With any wedding, you want the day to feel personal and intimate for the couple and guests alike. Consider decorating the venue with engagement photos of the soon-to-be spouses as they popped the question. This can allow the newlyweds to reminisce while guests view those cherished moments and revel in the occasion.
