Christopher Fiorentino Interim Chancellor
Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education
Christopher Fiorentino is an educator and economist who served as president of West Chester University from 2017 to 2024 and retired from that role having served the university for 41 years, starting as an assistant professor of economics in 1983.
Prior to being named president of WCU, Fiorentino served as interim president for one year and vice president for external operations for three years. He previously spent nearly 20 years as dean of WCU’s College of Business and Public Affairs (now the College of Business and Public Management); his tenure within the Department of Economics included four years as chair.
As president of the largest university in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, Fiorentino led the University through a global pandemic and provided valuable thought-partnership to his fellow presidents and system leaders amid the nationwide demographic shift as the number of high-school graduates declined.
Throughout his leadership, Fiorentino — who was named to Philadelphia Business Journal’s Power 100 list in 2021, 2022 and 2023 — instilled a spirit of innovation and ownership that has empowered students, faculty and staff.
Prior to his retirement, he was inducted into the Chester County Hall of Fame by the Chester County Economic Development Council. The Board of Governors conferred the status of president emeritus upon Fiorentino in the summer of 2024, and he was awarded an honorary doctorate for public service by Bucks County Community College, which he attended prior to transferring to Temple University.
Committed to propelling the University forward, Fiorentino oversaw the construction of the largest building on the University’s campus — the 175,000-square-foot Sciences & Engineering Center and The Commons.
Early on, Fiorentino helped WCU fulfill its mission to serve local communities and the commonwealth as a source of knowledge and skill development, a research center and a service provider. As dean, he helped to secure AACSB accreditation for the School of Business; developed off-campus academic centers, including the Graduate Center in West Goshen Township; and worked with faculty and supporters to create the Cottrell Entrepreneurial Leadership Center. Fiorentino also spearheaded the development of the Center for Community Solutions, which links business and civic leaders who have research needs with University faculty and staff who can address those needs.
Fiorentino earned his baccalaureate, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Temple University. He and his wife Sue reside in Chester County.

Karen Riley joined Slippery Rock University as its 18th president on July 1, 2023. As the University’s top executive administrator, Riley is continuing the legacy of keeping SRU as one of the leading public institutions in Pennsylvania. During Riley’s presidency, she created a new strategic plan and is overseeing the next era of the University. From its heritage as a teachers college more than 130 years ago, to today offering more than 150 academic programs and credentials across five colleges, SRU will continue to evolve to support its students.
Riley was previously provost and chief academic officer at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, from 2021-23. While there, she developed and launched an academic plan focused on excellence in teaching, research and student thriving.
Before joining Regis University, Riley was dean of the College of Education at the University of Denver from 2014-21. During
that time, Riley increased scholarly productivity across the college, raised over $27 million dollars, increased the number of students, faculty and staff and launched a Center for Professional Development to provide certificates and stackable credentials.
Riley began her career at the University of Denver in 2001 as a project coordinator and rose through the faculty ranks as an assistant (2004-10) and associate (2010-17) professor of child, family and school psychology. She became chair of the Educational Research Policy and Practice Department in 2011, before becoming interim dean of the College of Education in 2013.
An expert in neurodevelopmental disorders, Riley has researched approaches to addressing societal issues and improving the lives of those affected by Fragile X syndrome and Down syndrome. She spent the first decade of her career as an early childhood specialist and special education coordinator in public schools.
Riley earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Colorado State University and a master’s degree in early childhood special education and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Denver.

Dan Bauer serves as the dean of Slippery Rock University’s College of Liberal Arts. With nearly 30 years of experience in higher education, Bauer is an advocate for interconnected multidisciplinary learning and intellectual ambition that far transcends traditional classrooms. He leads more than 130 faculty members and staff in 10 departments in the humanities, the fine and performing arts, the social sciences and SRU’s Bailey Library, as well as the University’s general education core curriculum. A first-generation college graduate, Bauer has a strong affinity for higher education’s contributions to lifelong learning, as well as curiosity and imagination as powerful forces for wellness.
Prior to his arrival at SRU in 2017, Bauer served as chair and faculty leader for 14 years at both Georgia Southern University and Georgia College. Prior to earning tenure and promotion to full professor at Georgia College, he served seven years at two small private liberal arts colleges.
His research interests focus on writing assessment, the intersections of composition and epistemology, and the legacy of the writers and leaders of the Harlem Renaissance. His work has been published in “College Composition and Communication” and “The Journal of Business and Technical Communication,” in
addition to multiple edited collections of scholarly essays. Mentored by John Lounsbury, considered the father of the Middle School Movement, Bauer has served as editor of “Middle School Journal” and led of one of approximately 200 sites of the National Writing Project.
The proud parent of three four-legged “daughters,” Bauer has many roles as a nurturer in his community as well. He is active in the local Rotary Club and he is on the advisory board of Blackwood Arts, a local organization that, in the past 30 years, has donated nearly $500,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and more than $400,000 to scholarships to future performers and music educators.
He is a graduate of the Leadership Butler program, and he has been a strong champion of community engagement, particularly through SRU’s Institute for Nonprofit Leadership, as well as the camping program of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Bauer earned his Bachelor of Arts in economics and English (summa cum laude) from Simpson College in Iowa, a Master of Arts in English from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and a Ph.D. in rhetoric and professional communication from New Mexico State University.
As an undergraduate at Simpson, he was an NCAA Division III national champion long-distance runner and a three-time AllAmerican in track and cross country. He taught high school English and coached debate in public schools in western Iowa before finishing his doctoral degree and beginning his career in academia

University Grand Marshal
Larry McCarthy
Larry McCarthy, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of accounting and assistant to the dean of the College of Business, is the University’s Grand Marshal.
Historically, the grand marshal led all processions and their role was to protect the president from harm. Today, the grand marshal serves in a ceremonial capacity to set the tone and pace for all formal University events.
As commencement grand marshal, McCarthy carries the University mace to the podium to indicate that a formal academic session is in order. The grand marshal who leads
SRU Medallion
Faculty and administrators with 25 or more years of service at Slippery Rock University are identified at major University academic events by a specially crafted medallion. The 3.5-inch medallions bear the words “Slippery Rock University - Founded in 1889” on the front, with the recipient’s name engraved on the back. The medallions, worn around the neck from a green-and-white ribbon, were crafted in bronze at the Wendell August Forge in Grove City.

SRU Mace
Slippery Rock University ceremonial occasions begin with the entrance of the University Mace, carried by the University Marshal. The mace symbolizes the University’s governing authority and is present only when the president and trustees are in attendance. It signifies the proceedings have official sanction.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/241211193915-7230ed3f95d9c120da8fc6f43450909e/v1/ffa265369851a7e23e010fc43ce0085f.jpeg)
The tradition of the mace derives from medieval times in England, when the mace was held by a bodyguard to protect dignitaries at ceremonial functions. The Slippery Rock University mace is used only at Freshman Convocation, Commencement and Inaugural ceremonies. As an ancient symbol of authority, it reminds us that universities are custodians both of the enduring traditions of learning and of the power they bestow upon those who come to learn. It is also a reminder that the learning process has not always been comfortable and easy.
The late Kenneth Thompson, a local artisan, handcrafted the University mace in 1973. The curly maple wood that was used for the mace was taken from a tree cut near Slippery Rock University. Considerable lathe work was required to obtain the elaborate shape and design in the wood. The brass figure adorning the head of the mace was taken from the original furnishings of Old Main during a period of renovation. The mace is on permanent display in the President’s Office in Old Main.
both the processional and recessional, is charged with officially declaring the opening and closing of the ceremony and assists with the distribution of diplomas.
McCarthy has been a faculty member at SRU since 1985. He currently teaches accounting theory, nonprofit accounting, economics of social issues and accounting for mergers and acquisitions. His interests include small business, economic development of the region and veterans affairs. His research interests include the impact of shale gas on Pennsylvania’s economy and the availability and types of veterans services and support programs on American college campuses.
A lifelong resident of the area, he is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, an SRU alumnus, and earned his graduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Gonfalons
The gonfalons – or college banners – add a wonderful element of color and pageantry to official ceremonies. The gonfalon is a long banner that is suspended from a crossbar. The name derives from medieval Italy, where “gonfaloni” was the name given to community meetings in Florence. Each neighborhood had its own flag and coat of arms and the word gonfalon eventually came to be associated with the flag. Each of the five colleges and Graduate Studies at Slippery Rock University has its own gonfalon. The “gonfalonieres” –or flag bearers – precede each college during the processional. The gonfalons are placed on the platform at the beginning of official ceremonies.

SRU Alumni Association Gift
The Slippery Rock University Alumni Association provides a zipper pull for every graduating student. The zipper pull should be attached to the zipper of the gown and worn during the commencement exercises. The zipper pull carries the official seal of the Alumni Association.
The seal depicts a view of Old Main, the oldest building on campus, surrounded by “Slippery Rock University Alumni Association.” The seal is green and white, representing the official colors of Slippery Rock University.

Academic Regalia
The pageantry and dress of the academic procession have been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries where academic life began, first in the church then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the guild of the Master of Arts. The Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibilities.
Principal features of academic dress are the gown, the cap and the hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and the meaning of the academic dress. Two English universities, Oxford and Cambridge, are particularly noted for the development of the authentic costume, which has changed only slightly through the centuries.
The gown originated in the 12th century. While the flowing gown originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, today it has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any dress of rank or social standing underneath. Gowns vary in the trimming and the design of the sleeves. The doctoral gown has velvet facings down the front and three velvet chevrons on the bell-shaped sleeves. These velvet trimmings may be black or the prescribed color of the academic area.

As the focal point of the University, the president wears a distinctive gown unique to Slippery Rock University. The distinctive feature of the presidential gown is the addition of the fourth chevron to each sleeve. This honor is granted only to one who holds the rank of president or chancellor of an academic institution. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves while the bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves. Neither has trimming. The bachelor’s gown is always worn closed; the master’s and doctoral gown may be worn open or closed.
When Roman law freed a slave, he won the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship as well as responsibility and dignity. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The square black mortarboard with a black tassel is the recommended cap. Doctors may wear a velvet cap with a gold tassel. Tassels are worn over the left front corner after a degree has been conferred.
The hood identifies the level of the degree, the school that granted it and the academic area. The silk lining of the hood is the color or colors of the college or university, while the color of the edging of the hood represents the degree.

Slippery Rock University would like to share its appreciation to all faculty, staff members and students who have contributed their time and talents to making each commencement ceremony a special event for its graduates and their families and friends. Thank you one and all.
Special Notes
A professional photographer will capture the moment when graduates receive their SRU diplomas. Ordering instructions for photos of the ceremony will be emailed to the graduates’ home by early January.
In order to avoid congestion, and as a way to maintain decorum for this prestigious ceremony, the University asks that family members and guests refrain from approaching the stage to photograph or videotape the ceremony. No photos will be allowed on the floor following the ceremony.
To avoid obstructing the view for other guests, please do not bring balloons or large signs into Morrow Field House.
Individual presentation of diplomas takes time, but the recognition of each graduate has special significance for family members, friends and guests of the graduates. Everyone is requested to remain seated throughout the program to avoid disruption of the commencement activities.
We hope you enjoy today’s ceremony and that you will cherish the memories of Slippery Rock University and this graduation. Congratulations and best wishes.
