Charismatic China We take you to China, its rich architectural history and the essence of its ancient and modern architecture style and design

hina is the second largest country in Asia and is famously known for its rich architecture style and history. The country has grown tremendously and has developed its architectural style, having the essence of both ancient and modern architecture. Its ancient architecture classifies structures according to type, ranging from pagodas to palaces. In some part there is also an emphasis on the use of wood, a relatively perishable material. One can see monumental structures built with durable materials and much of the historical knowledge of Chinese architecture is derived from surviving

miniature models in ceramic and published planning diagrams and specifications. China architecture has also been influenced by Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Vietnam in its architectural style. Chinese architecture is typified by various features; such as, bilateral symmetry, use of enclosed open spaces, the incorporation of ideas related to feng shui such as directional hierarchies, a horizontal emphasis, and the allusion to various cosmological, mythological, or other symbolisms. Modern Chinese architecture refers to everything built in China since about the middle of the
1800s and includes a wide variety of architectural styles. From blends of traditional elements and contemporary techniques to cutting-edge modern architectural icons, Chinese architecture has it all. Talking about its culture, people and food, it is one of the most wonderful places to be around. The high five streets and the hustle and bustle lightings, in the night is hard to miss on. China is also known for its famous technological developments and innovations every other day, but at the same time it has a history of ancient and modern architecture, which is slowly getting its name all over the world.
Travelogue Here are some of the famous monuments and building which embody the architectural history and identity of China: Great Wall of China, Beijing When talking about China, one can never forget the famous architecture monument ‘Great Wall of China,” which is as one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the top ranked tourist destination of China. It has a spectacular defensive structure built to keep intruders from entering the mainland. The construction of the Great Wall began in the 5th century BC and the whole project lasted for centuries, through different dynasties.
(meaning the eternal city), Xian stretches back for more than 3,000 years. It was the eastern end of the famous Silk Road and is regarded as one of the birthplaces of the ancient Chinese and the capital of 13 dynasties for over 1,000 years. The Terracotta Warriors were created by the Emperor Qin Shihuang who united China for the first time in 221
BC after defeating six other states and creating the Qin dynasty which was to give its name to China. The Forbidden City, Beijing The Forbidden City (or the Palace Museum) is one of the must-visit attractions for travelers to China. It used to be an imperial palace in the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing

It is designed by French architect Paul Andrew. The NCPA is semi-spherical in appearance, with a long axis length of 212.20 meters in the east-west direction, a short axis length of 143.64 meters in the north-south direction, a height of 46.285 meters, an area of 119,900 square meters, and a total construction area of approximately 165,000 square meters. It includes an opera hall, music hall, theater and art exhibition halls, restaurants, audio shops, and other supporting facilities.

Wanders and his studio have worked with the likes of Alessi, Baccarat, KLM, Hyatt Hotels, Louis Vuitton, Puma, Swarovski and many other designs –led brands. Also some of his best known project work with

companies such as Boffi, Bisazza and an ongoing relationship with Laufen is widely appreciated. He said, “The size and architecture of bathrooms make them a “beautiful challenge” for professional designer. “The role of designers is to manage the relationship that our audience has with the artificial surrounding we are creating.”
“Architecture is unforgiving; it is a square concrete shape without any softness. For us to live in that space we need interiors- we need clothes, wallpaper, curtains. A bathroom is a small concrete space and we’re naked in it, so we’re pretty vulnerable and it’s a very demanding little space, so doing it well is really important. Talking about his projects, he said,

We try to make a type of design that’s more romantic, more durable, and more meaningful. We try to touch people deeply and make things that people will never throw away. We do the things that people have because they love them – those
things that people love forever. I want to make the antiques of tomorrow. “To surprise the world, you first have to surprise yourself, so that’s our biggest challenge. To find something we are really excited about that, if we pull it off, it makes us better than we were yesterday.”

OCEAN IN YOUR HOME Driftwood artist Alan Borg talks to The Tiles of India about his art and his profound love for the sea
S
ustainable decor art is going to be the future of décor. Décor is an extremely intimate, personal expression of our most innate desires. We choose objects, colours and textures based on things and beliefs we identify with. In the recent times we have seen an upsurge in environmental awareness and a demand for a lifestyle that is in alignment with being socially and environmentally responsible. Driftwood artist Alan Borg from South Australia, Yorke Peninsula is well known across the world for his intricate and lifelike driftwood sculptures which
22 The Tiles of India Jan-feb 2020
are intensely moving yet very chic. They are highly versatile and can be added to almost any décor with an
instant eye catching appeal. They are conversation starters with an intriguing quality
Sustainable Artist to them. Tell us about driftwood art and how you began? I have always been fascinated by the ocean, driftwood art is an extension of the ocean to me. There is so much history, each piece of driftwood has its own story. Whether it has crossed oceans or come from long lost ship wrecks. Because my art is ocean inspired, I prefer to represent the ocean creatures with the materials that the ocean has also delivered. I am also very happy to use environmentally friendly materials in my art and we also as a family collect beach plastic and flotsam and dispose of it responsibly, to give something back to the sea. I have been an avid beach comber since childhood. I have always marveled at the texture, shapes and history of driftwood. Every piece has a story. Maybe even from long past shipwrecks. I soon started collecting and over time building ocean themed sculptures. How is driftwood as a medium to work with? Although I love working with driftwood it sure has its challenges. I am often walking and travel great distances to find driftwood I can work with. Last year we traveled over 15000kms in search of workable
materials. Also because of its unstable nature driftwood can often split and crumble so the right timber is needed. Can you explain your creative process? I gain most of my inspiration from the days spent on the beach collecting driftwood. As I encounter coastal birds and ocean creatures I soon start assembling the driftwood in my mind in the shape and movement of the forms I see. My favourite sculptures are the ones I begin as soon as I return from beach combing. How has been the response to your work?
The response to my work has been amazing and often humbling. I was lucky to never really go through the ‘starving artist’ phase. My art seemed to take off straight away and I now get commissions from international buyers which have inspired me to create more. What are your future plans in terms of expanding your creativity and reach? I have just recently gone full time with my art and have built a Bus to travel Australia with onboard art studio. I would love to continue the growth of international interest in my art and recycle more of the flotsam and jetsom in which I find on the beaches.

aha Hadid Architects in collaboration with multiple teams has designed and constructed KnitCandela, a thin sinuous concrete shell built on ultra-lightweight knitted formwork that was carried to Mexico from Switzerland in a suitcase.

Constructed at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City as part of Zaha Hadid Architects’ first exhibition in Latin America, KnitCandela is an experimental structure that pays homage to the Spanish-Mexican architect and engineer Félix Candela. shell structures through the introduction of new computational design methods and innovative KnitCrete formwork technology. The dynamic geometry of KnitCandela’s shell is inspired by the fluid forms of the colourful traditional dress of Jalisco, Mexico. While the structure’s local builders nicknamed the project ‘sarape’ (a striped scarf that originated in Mexico), KnitCandela’s form references his acclaimed restaurant at Xochimilco; a concept he further developed in several of his subsequent projects. The soft, colourful textile interior of KnitCandela’s shell and its hard,
concrete exterior is visible from all viewing angles. The textile’s striped pattern expresses the knitting fabrication process and the radial symmetry of the shape. This patterning, along with the simultaneous visibility of the soft interior and the hard exterior of the shell enhances the visitor’s spatial experience and the curvatures of the KnitCandela’s form. The architectural design is the latest expression of the Zaha Hadid Architects’ computation and design research group (ZHCODE) for designs that utilise structural and constructional features to enhance the spatial experience of the user. Designed to be constructed jan-feb 2020 The Tiles of India 25
Innovation
The soft, colourful textile interior of KnitCandela’s shell and its hard, concrete exterior is visible from all viewing angles
within a tight schedule, restricted space and minimal budget, it demonstrates the rapid evolution and adaptation of digital design and fabrication to the challenges faced by the construction industry. This experimental structure also explores the possibilities of integrating digital fabrication with the skills of traditional craftsmanship and construction methods. The 50m2 of textile shuttering of KnitCandela’s formwork is comprised of four long strips ranging from 15 m to 26 m in length. 26 The Tiles of India jan-feb 2020
Each of the four strips is a seamless, double-layered textile produced as a single piece. Two layers of textile fulfill different tasks. The visible inside is an aesthetic surface that displays a colourful pattern and reveals traces of the supporting cable-net falsework system. The exterior surface fulfils technical requirements by including features for inserting, guiding and controlling the position of additional formwork elements. The pockets created between the two layers as part of the spatial knitting process are inflated using standard modeling
balloons. These inflated pockets become cavities in the cast concrete, forming a structurally efficient waffle shell without the need for a complex, wasteful formwork. Pockets located on this exterior side of the textile have different knit densities to control the inflated shape and openings for the insertion of the balloons, enabling cavities of different dimensions to be created with one standard balloon size.

Inspired by the traditional Japanese technique of Kintsugi - the art of repairing broken antique porcelain with a precious material, such as gold dust, and thus obtaining a repaired piece that does not hide the fracture and whose result is a piece that may have even more value than the ceramic before breaking- the project doesn´t pretend to hide the heterodox eclecticism of the existing building, but instead conciliate and celebrate the different layers of history and clearly highlight the new interventions that have been necessary to give the house its new use. In the main staircase, the skylight is flooded with water becoming a small pool with a transparent bottom that creates a play of light through the water, flooding the staircase with caustic reflections… The furniture is a very important part of the project. The eclecticism of the architecture is reflected in the selection of furniture with pieces from very different eras and origins. Antiquarian pieces coexist with contemporary furniture carefully selected and with bespoke furniture designed by OHLAB specifically for Can Bordoy as a collection of beds and bars.

The Tile of Spain Awards Winner 2019 The Tile of Spain awards celebrate the imaginative use of Spanish ceramics in architecture and interior design. Now in its 18th year, the competition is organised by ASCER, the Spanish ceramic tile manufacturers’ association. The prizes aim to improve awareness and understanding of ceramic tiles made in Spain amongst architects and interior designers and promotes their use by these professionals. The winners in the Architecture category were PICH architects and 2BMFG Arquitectes whose
permeable ceramic envelope on the Santa Creu and Sant Pau Hospital Research Centre in Barcelona blends innovatively with its structure. The jury highlighted the creative use of a ceramic material and the context in which it was used, establishing visual links between indoors and out and giving the building a chameleon-like outer appearance. The first prize in the Interior Design category went to a project for the waiting areas of a bus station in Badajoz by José María Sánchez García, where the ceramic tiles alone meet all the requirements and
more of coverings in public spaces. The judges applauded the elegance with which this project was brought to fruition through the design of the ceramic material. The key elements of this project are its geometrical shapes, attention to detail, construction and space, taking into accounts both the smallest of details and the overall user experience. The awards ceremony will be held on 4 February 2020 at Cevisama, the international trade fair for ceramic tiles, surface coatings and bathroom and kitchen design held in Valencia. jan-feb 2020 The Tiles of India 79
