PHILIPPE STARCK “La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich is like rock and roll dancing with the Queen of England; everything is classic, yet nothing is classic anymore. It is a timeless blend of creativity, classicism and intelligence - like Switzerland itself.”
The Imaginary Yacht Club By The Lake
Philippe Starck, world famous creator with multifaceted inventiveness, is always focused on the essential, his vision: that creation, whatever form it takes, must improve the lives of as many people as possible. This philosophy has made him one of the pioneers and central figures of the concept of “democratic design”. By employing his prolific work across all domains, from everyday products (furniture, a citrus-squeezer, electric bikes, an individual wind turbine), to architecture (hotels, restaurants that aspire to be stimulating places) and naval and spatial engineering (mega yachts, habitation module for private space tourism), he continually pushes the boundaries and requirements of design, becoming one of the most visionary and renowned creators of the international contemporary scene. Under the impetus of La Réserve and the vision of excellence upheld by its owner Michel Reybier, the Eden au Lac hotel is reinventing itself as La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich. A new 5-star establishment in Zurich, the hotel has been completely redesigned to provide an elegant and timeless experience in the heart of an imaginary yacht club dreamed up by creator Philippe Starck.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see. Edgar Degas Art inspires architecture in the most profound manner. It impacts design thinking and innovation, in a very fundamental way. It has been responsible for some of the most iconic, awe inspiring work of mankind. This issue is dedicated to this symbiotic relationship between art, design thought and life itself. For what is life, if not for the sheer breathtaking beauty of what surrounds us in our everyday? Art is the everyday love, the magic of the fluid swirls, the twists, stylish corners, sleek edges, polished surfaces and the passion that makes life so much more worthwhile. David Chipperfield is our star architect for this issue and has recently been awarded with the ‘Architect of The Year’ at Iconic 2019. We have covered his unique architectural quality – a blend of his Japanese-inspired minimalist design idiom and a confident use of light, space and material, combined with an unmistakable style that has earned him a solid reputation across the globe. The project section showcases projects that are highly artistic in their conceptualization and execution, One Thousand Museum, a residential tower in Miami, the Jewel Airport, Sonorra and Carmine House, the Hverdagen restaurant, House of Fanusta, a décor store, and a bold residence in black. The décor section brings to you, Puik, a Netherland based brand with eclectic pieces that are sure to raise the vibe of your space! In addition to this there are special reports on the International Surface Event 2020, Cevisama 2020, Qualicer and iDACExpo.. Dive in and enjoy!

ed Cullinan was an English Architect, born in Islington, London. Cullinan founded his own studio in 1965. Cullinan was a visiting Professor at the University of Nottingham, and was awarded four other professorships at The Bartlett, Sheffield University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Edinburgh. In 2008, Cullinan was awarded the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. unprecedented buildings. He did this from the outset of his long career. The house he and his wife, Roz, built by hand over two years in the early 60s in Camden, and which remained his life-long family home, was at once a happily intuitive design, an inspired infill development, and, before energy conservation was much talked about, an effective passive solar house. His project The Minster Lovell Conference Centre in Oxfordshire, completed in 1969, showed how a venerable stone barn could become a beautiful and modern Centre for Advanced Study into march-april 2020 The Tiles of India 19

Developmental Science. Faced in the mid-1980s with a system-build school that, in other eyes, deserved demolition, Cullinan gave Calthorpe Park School at Fleet in Hampshire a new and greener life with a parasol-like over-roof, planting and pavilions. The nearby Farnborough Grange Junior School, another systembuild job, couldn’t be saved. Cullinan replaced it with a gentle, if purposeful, school, completed in 1990 with fond echoes of Gropius and Fry’s late 1930s Impington Village College.
Then there was the Downland Gridshell, a 21st-century organic cathedral of sorts, shaped in a Sussex dell from a curving grid of supple green oak laths clad in red cedar shingles and lit by a polycarbonate clerestory. A workshop for conservation and training in the preservation of historic timber-framed buildings, this low-energy and wholly enchanting building was a work of engineering, craft, architectural and landscape sorcery. Small wonder festivals and weddings are held there.
A warm and generous man, Cullinan proved to be an architect who could weave and forge ideas from very different approaches, styles and methods into conceiving unprecedented buildings The Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge (2003) was a further revelation, a campus within a campus composed of visually enigmatic pavilions within a stepped and ever-so-slightly Alice in Wonderland city garden setting. Stephen Hawking enjoyed working there. Throughout his career Cullinan was known for designs that consider their impact on their environment. He died at the age of 88 in November 2019.

hweta Mansingka’s journey with clay started under the tutelage of Shri Ram Kumar Manna in Calcutta in 1989. She had her first solo sculpture show at the Birla Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. In 1999, under the guidance of Shri Devi Prashad she started working and learnt more about kilns and glazing. This enabled her to finally set up her own studio and she works from this private space since. 2008 took her to Miami University experimenting with alternative firing techniques. Learning for her has been an insatiable journey constantly evolving and she is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with many diverse and accomplished artists and teachers. She makes wall installations as well as countertop artworks. She has taken part in numerous shows

and won awards internationally. Ceramic is her medium of expression to convey thoughts that have marked her thinking. Shweta says, “Simple mute objects of art speak, if you have the vision to see, or bandwidth to listen to their silence... I believe an artist’s thought has a voice that rings through their work to resonate with its audience. My work is an expression of that minimalism that tries to reach out to touch a cord with its viewer, hoping to provoke them to think and delve deeper within. Art does not need to elaborate its intent, rather touches on the subtle leaving much to individual interpretation.” Her work was published in 2012 by the American Ceramic Society in the book Naked Raku and Related Bare Clay Techniques.

P
uik showcases a tasteful range of furniture and accessories made by Dutch designers that are narrowed down to a collection of essentials. Puik selects and coproduces, showcases and delivers. Straight from the source to liven up your home, or spice up any workspace. The founders of Puik, Freek Claessen and Daan Gescher, always have had a passion for art and design. In 2012, they found themselves inspired by the quality and the enthusiasm of Dutch designers. This fueled the spark, that made them decide to chase their dreams and start Puik. Freek and Daan, who have a professional background in production and sales, realized that even though Dutch designers create beautiful products, they often do not reach the audience they deserve. By taking this as a base and by utilizing each other’s unique expertise, it became clear that you could only stand stronger
by working together. This resulted in a diverse portfolio of design icons, which quickly found their way to countless stores. Design as a branch is constantly evolving, so for the founders it only comes naturally to evolve with it. Over the last few years, Puik has been able to grow exponentially. Under the guidance of art director Tineke Beunders, the entire collection was revised and Puik embraced a renewed style. Our unique design items come into their own, by using natural light and reflection, soft colour tones and transparent materials. Puik has the ambition to keep doing bigger and better things in the future. Their goal is to introduce the world to Dutch contemporary Design. Here is the look at the latest designs which are regarded as some of the best ideas for interiors of your décor:

An inventive table for a modern home Bas Vellekoop is known for his eye for detail. Those details are usually visible and essential to the overall design, forming a defining element of the aesthetics. This style is reflected in Fold because of the origamistyle detail in the table legs. The lasercut steel frame consists of eight individual parts that have been folded together, resulting in elegant joints and an impressive finish.

The stool that strikes gold The design style of Ka-Lai Chan can be described as minimal, less is more, narrative yet functional. She wants to bring people closer to the products by telling a story, using particular materials, craft or experience. The design style of Ka-Lai is reflected in the way Bokk is designed: the use of minimal lines, materials, and an aesthetic yet functional design. Ka-Lai was inspired by the traditional buck: Bokk is a reinvention of this oldfashioned gymnastic equipment. What makes this design special are the clear, geometric lines that support and embrace the cushion. Ka-Lai decided to use steel legs and a cushion of felt because of the intriguing contrast.
Please be seated Frederik Roijé is a designer because he is fascinated by creating. He designs interior products in order to make people’s life environment more pleasant. The Option chair was designed by combining three of the primary forms. This creates multiple possibilities within one design, thus allowing the users to add their own touch. What makes the Option special is the variety within the design that can be created by the simplicity of the forms.

Travelogue
Once you breathe Paris, Paris lives in you forever…Anonymous Paris enchants you, volatile, chic, frivolous and flirty, like a tinkling flute of champagne. It is often referred as the ‘City of Light’ or a ‘City of Love’. Paris has a way of making you believe in everything beautiful, it is like a fresh breath of air that stays with you forever. It is one of the largest European cities and capital of France. The city is very famous for the classical architecture of its facades and for its art and décor construction. It is also house of the many famous architects and designers. The city’s top tourist attraction the Notre Dame Cathedral, which welcomed an estimated 12,000,000 visitors in 2018,
is closed for renovation after the 15 April 2019 fire and is not expected to reopen for several years. The other famous and tourist attraction includes The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur on Montmartre, the Louvre Museum, Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay, The National Museum of Natural History, The Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, the Arc de Triomphe and Sainte-Chapelle. The city Paris has rich history with notable examples of architecture of every period, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. It was the birthplace of the Gothic style, and has important monuments of the French Renaissance, Classical revival, the Flamboyant style of the reign of Napoleon III, the Belle Époque,

and the Art Nouveau style. The great Exposition Universelle (1889) and 1900 added Paris landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower and Grand Palais. In the 20th century, the Art Deco style of architecture first appeared in Paris, and Paris architects also influenced the postmodern architecture of the second half of the
century. Paris architecture since 2000 has been very diverse, with no single dominant style. In the field of museums and monuments, the most prominent name has been Jean Nouvel. His earlier work in Paris included the Institut du Monde Arabe (1982–87), and the Fondation Cartier

(1992–94), which features a glass screen between the building and the street. In 2006 he completed the Musée du Quai Branly, the Presidential project of Jacques Chirac, a museum presenting the cultures of Asia, Africa and the Americas. It also included a glass screen between the building and the street, as well as a façade covered with living plants. In 2015, he completed the new Philharmonie de Paris at Parc de la Villette. The American architect Frank Gehry also made a notable contribution to Paris architect, for his American Center in Bercy (1994), which became the home of the Cinémathèque Française in 2005; and for the building of the Louis Vuitton Foundation, a museum of modern and contemporary art in the Bois de Boulogne. Fine as a rich wine, it is an unforgettable experience that mélanges art, philosophy, culture, architecture and leaves your soul nourished. Breathe Paris, breathe immortality…

he new Opera House is an important part of a new urban master plan for Shanghai that aims to place the city at the forefront of the globe, economically, scientifically, and culturally. The Opera House is expected to become one of the major cultural landmarks of Shanghai – the country’s 13th FiveYear Plan names it as the most important initiative to strengthen Shanghai’s cultural and global influence. “The Shanghai Grand Opera House is a natural progression of our previous work with designing performing arts centers,” says Snøhetta Founder Kjetil Trædal Thorsen. “It is a culmination of the competence and insight gained through projects such as the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, the Busan Opera House in South Korea, the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts in Canada, and the Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers renovation in Paris. The Shanghai Grand Opera House is a product of our contextual understanding and values, designed to promote public ownership of the building for the people of Shanghai and beyond”. The Shanghai Grand Opera House is designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with the design team partners; ECADI (local design institute), Theatre Projects (theater design), Nagata Acoustics (acoustic design) and Schlaich Bergermann Partner (structural design). The new Opera House will be built in the Expo Houtan neighborhood, located at the convex bank in the riverside area near Huangpu River. The neighborhood, which will have an ecological and low-carbon profile, emphasizes the Opera’s mission of being a public and open venue. The radial layout of the surrounding landscapes harmonizes with the overall geometry of the Opera building, ensuring key view paths from both the Opera to the city, and from the city to the Opera.
Designed to bring artists and the public under a shared roof, the sweeping form of the new Opera House embodies the concept of movement. The helical roof surface evokes an unfolding fan, capturing the dynamism of dance and the human body. Generating both surface and space, the radial movements of the roof form a spiraling staircase that connects ground and sky and creates views towards the city and the Huangpu river banks. The spiraling, fanning motions extend throughout the project, into the lobby, the halls, and the three auditoriums. The Opera House’s
visual identity also references the same movements, with the new, clean logo characterized by a highly recognizable open fan pattern. Public Space and a Generous Design The Opera roof will become an accessible stage and meeting place, suitable to both large-scale events and everyday visitors. In celebrating both the collective and the individual, the plaza will allow visitor access 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, engendering a sense of public ownership. A series of restaurants, galleries, exhibitions, museums, education centers, libraries and

small cinemas will all contribute to the Opera becoming a popular destination. At the heart of the Opera is the 2,000-seat main auditorium: a finely tuned instrument that offers state-of-the-art technical solutions and superior acoustics. The 1,200seat second stage will offer a more intimate setting for smaller productions. The 1,000-seat third stage offers a flexible stage and seating arrangement, providing space for more experimental and unique performances, aiming to attract a new generation of opera goers.

The Shanghai Grand Opera House will be a world-class venue, placing the visitors at the center of the stage. Through its aesthetics, functionality, as well as its cultural and ecological ambition, the Opera House will be accessible canvas for global visitors, local citizens, and artists to fill with life and culture.

The owners want to introduce everyday food in an experimenting and sustainable way based on 100% organic ingredients. By using simple technonics inspired by Japanese craftsmanship Vermland showcases high-end furniture in an everyday setting. The Vermland studio prefers the best proposal format, taking into consideration all the materials and giving what required. As Anton Bak, Co-Founder of Vermland puts it across, “We try our best to design and manufacture furniture based on local and long lasting materials that we believe will continue contributing to its environment for many decades to come.” A long table is hanging from the timber frame construction in the middle of the room and divides the café into smaller zones with different functions. The goal was to be able to host social everyday long table dinners while at the same time allow people to stop by for a more intimate café experience. “We see how more and more people are asking to share their food when being out on restaurants. This experience concept resembles a casual dinner at home where you have one or two shared pots instead of single plates. We love this intimate way of eating together and wanted to embrace it by placing a long table as a center piece in the room” -

By integrating dowels into the beams and columns the structure utilizes the qualities of solid wood lifting up the long table without the use of any screws. In keeping with the primary design ethos of organic concepts, HVERDAGEN brings together organic food with a beautiful oeuvre of fermenting processes involved when making the ingredients. They were keen to showcase this, resulting in the shelf system that covers the entire back wall in the building making it blend in with the existing wood structure. avit Jilavyan and his sister Mary Jilavyan, are young architects and visualizers from Moscow. Their friend from Mexico wanted them to create the concept of a house for one family. They wanted a simple and bright house, but they didn’t want it to be simply like a coloured box with windows. They didn’t want
to invent something new instead decided to harmoniously combine the color and shape. Sonora House In the Sonora House, they used pitched roof with an internal gutter system. In order to get away from the standard use of windows, they made them scatter, of different
shapes and sizes. In addition to custom design, this solution allowed light to come into all rooms of the house. Thus came into existence, a bright coloured house with a modern minimalistic shape. Despite the bright visions it was made in such a way that it fits in with the surrounding environment.

Carmine House They designed and visualized the concept of the private house in USA, Washington for a family. The brief was for a bright house, a pitched roof and minimalistic design with a small modern extension of metal and glass. The extension is located on the 1st floor, where they placed the living room, kitchen and dining area, and all this was turned relative to the main part of the house by 45 degrees towards the lake, to ensure 58 The Tiles of India march-april 2020

maximum light and a beautiful view of the lake. In this area there are panoramic windows from floor to ceiling, and from the living room side there are revolving, opening windows that allow access to a large terrace and pier. In the main part of the house there are 2 carved parts at 45 °. A large part of the cut is made in order to preserve the trees and plants growing there. The second
carved piece, the small one, is made to maintain conceptual symmetry. For the main part of the house, they chose the shade of red carmine, thanks to which the house stands out from the forest. The house also has outside night lightings in the color of the house. Like the SONORA house, there is an internal drainage system here. In this project in the attic, there are the balcony windows, Velux GDL Cabrio, allowing residents to be
even closer to nature. The house look bright and juicy, both on a sunny day and on a cloudy day, while the outside red lightings create a nice atmosphere that makes the house look like an art object.

raversing the winding Randselva river, BIG’s first project in Norway, The Twist, opens as an inhabitable bridge torqued at its center, forming a new journey and art piece within the Kistefos Sculpture Park in Jevnaker, Norway. Kistefos’ new 1,000m2 contemporary art institution doubles as infrastructure to connect two forested riverbanks, completing the cultural route through northern Europe’s largest sculpture park. Built around a historical pulp mill, The Twist is conceived as a beam warped 90 degrees near the middle to create a sculptural form as it spans the Randselva. Visitors roaming the park’s site-specific works by international artists such as Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson, Lynda Benglis Yayoi Kusama, Jeppe Hein and Fernando Botero, among others, cross The Twist to complete the art tour. As a second bridge and
natural extension to the park, the new museum transforms the visitor experience while doubling Kistefos’ indoor exhibition space. A simple twist in the building’s volume allows the bridge to lift from the lower, forested riverbank in the south up to the hillside area in the north. As a continuous path in the landscape, both sides of the building serve as the main entrance. From the south entry, visitors cross a 16m aluminum-clad steel bridge to reach the double-height space with a clear view to the north end, similarly linked with a 9m pedestrian bridge. The double-curve geometry of the museum is comprised of straight 40cm wide aluminum panels arranged like a stack of books, shifted ever so slightly in a fanning motion. OMA’s first hotel dedicated not only to guests but also the local community, the Potato Head Studios features an open ground plane for curated cultural events and daily leisure activities, which welcomes visitors of all kinds. While the essence of Bali lies in interaction between different cultures, the ubiquitous resort typology currently in Bali and other tropical destinations paradoxically emphasizes hotel guests’ exclusive enjoyment, detached from the life of the local community. Located on one of the last remaining unoccupied beach front sites in Seminyak, the Potato Head Studios challenges the typical resort typology: the notion of “exclusivity” is abandoned; the resort is reconsidered as a part of the local community. avi Mumbai based Designer Komal Sachdev has designed an apartment for a business family which features almost exclusively a black and brown colour palette. The large square footage and rooms filled with natural-light from the big windows justifies the use of dark colors as it brings in warmth and makes it easy to maintain for a family with young kids. There are many dramatic mindblowing surfaces in this home along with refreshing pops of colors in the family’s favorite color – red - to break the monotony of black. Hint: powder room’s illusionary effect with black-and-white mosaic tiles. Stepping out from the elevator, guests are teased to a glimpse of the magnificent interiors that lies beyond. The large wooden framed glass door is flanked on either side by a fire brick clad wall. A collection of mushroom shaped wooden murals dots the wall on one side. The main door is fitted with horse shaped handles as the horse symbolizes positivity as per Vaastu. The doors open up to a public lobby area comprising two black shoe cabinets that mimic the chevron pattern in the wall behind and symmetric rectangles on the door leading to the main quarters. Illuminating the space is the smoked glass chandelier, a cluster of grey glass bulbs that offer a counterpoint to the straight lines around the house. A similar chandelier finds a place in the dining room. Komal reasons by saying,” I believe in continuity of design throughout a space to ensure harmony. They may be splendid individual pieces of art but when put together, do they sing the same story?” Harmoniously put together and strung like exquisite pearls, the residence has a natural languor. A
deluge of natural light from the 22ft long window in the living room is balanced by the warmth of the exposed concrete wall, the black Italian marble flooring, the nested center tables, and the veneer paneling behind the TV. A pair of orange accent chairs set against the exposed concrete wall brings a refreshing zing of color. The master bedroom mirrors the children bedroom on the other side of the living. A classic combination of tan leather bed and Venetian concrete textured walls lends a

luxe factor to the bedroom. The lounge comprises a seating area and an L-shaped bar counter below the window. The burgundy red fluted pattern makes a dashing impact in an otherwise ceilingto-floor black room. A gallery of psychedelic prints adds to the visual interest. A peninsula kitchen is adorned with Metroplitan grey quartz, acrylic shutters, and translucent black shutters. The powder room has a dramatic delusional impact on any one who enters. Komal explains, “The

powder room is designed for guests to be accessible from the lounge / entertaining area. We wanted to use a concept that one would least expect to find in a residence, but blows away your mind. “ The black and white mosaic tiles, which is actually a 9X9 tile, has that impact. The head-spinning effect is amplified by running the tiles along the walls. The icing on the cake is the framed art print with hints of black and white pattern in it. The black ceiling and pair of lights complement the theme. The kids’ bedroom shared by the three kids, a teenager and two really young ones, has touches of blush pink and baby blue. It is cleverly designed to age beautifully instead of wearing any over-the-top childish theme. The guest room speaks of warmth and is done in the classic combination of beige, cream, brown and tan. A brilliant example of how to go bold with black, yet not make it claustrophobic.

“When a place is lifeless or unreal, there is almost always a mastermind behind it. It is so filled with the will of its maker, that there is no room for its own nature.” – Christopher Alexander The Breathing Office in Manjeri is a story subtly nestled in the process of being given illustrious shape to its space by the architects from Tropical Architecture Bureau. This story is set deep in a tropic centre of the world – Kerala. A place that immediately transports you to lazy days by long sandy beaches, the sounds of crashing waves, the tranquil backwaters, palms trees gaily waving their arms up in the humid breeze – a cove of solace. But in a city called Manjeri, in Malappuarm, these attractions have taken a back seat to give way to concrete buildings, noisy roads, monotonous transport, and tired individuals who tug themselves and their lunchboxes to work in rows and rows of dull coloured buildings with tiny windows and no promising
views – classic Taylorism. Offices, today, are rooted in the interaction of the employees – communication, coordination, conversation, etc. and the users must be consciously aware of their spatial context while engaging in these functions. To that end, the architects at TAB trusted in the power of unconventional and varied use of local materials and skilled labour. Work like this is physical proof that somebody has taken joy in beautifying a space for another and there is something so wholesome about the “human touch.” The technical details lie within simple, achievable and more importantly, economical limits such that it serves as a prototype which maximises human energy and efficiency in the workplace The architectural elements together harmonise in warm tones of the exposed finish of metal, cement and wood without becoming monotonous or visually strenuous by occasionally breaking march-april 2020 The Tiles of India 73

materials and not having covered it up with cladding or plaster, portrays the building in its skeletal form and breathing with the users inside – as if it is still in the process of, itself, being a building. The variation in textures, brought about by the diversity in materials, creates for a truly enriching spatial experience using all the sensory organs. One can see a range of colours in a unified palette but also run a hand on the cool hard concrete, the ridged bricks, the granular mortar in-between, the smooth leathery leaves, the ribbed wooden surfaces, satiny metals, and soft upholstery. The architects have, thus, painstakingly incorporated elements in the material spectrum, creating a unique and varied experience each time.

True to the PATTERNITY ethos, the collection’s concept centres around the beauty of nature, environmental awareness and celebrating sustainable design practice. In Liquid, each of the individual colours are aesthetically innovative and as a collection, touch on the future of global trends. Introducing three new colours – Liquid Sky, Liquid Shell and Liquid Embers, The Liquid collection visualises and makes tangible the power of liquid, offering a chance to integrate swirling, rippling and fluid ideas into everyday spaces. Liquid Sky A swirling, marbled, cloud-like pattern which celebrates the scientific principles of fluid dynamics.
Liquid Sky’s unique characteristics consist of a white base with flowing grey veins. The design explores the movement of gravity, the interplay of the elements, their matter, and pays homage to swirling energy and perpetual motion. Liquid Shell Celebrating subtlety and softness, Liquid Shell honors what lies beneath the waves in the ocean. The ocean is reminiscent of the rhythmic nature of life, the gentle ebb and flow that softens, creating new textures and smooth surfaces with each passing current. The design of Liquid Shell is also inspired by the moon, in union with the ocean’s tide. The pearlescent shade is a varying off-
white with a rippling pattern of the landscape of the ocean floor. Liquid Embers Liquid Embers represents a meeting point between fire and liquid, a space which lies deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Reminiscent of magma, the cross of endings and new beginnings, Liquid Embers is a dark, carbon-like design that visualises the alchemy of the elements. Where universal connection emerges, this pattern renews intuition, potency and creativity.

Cevisama 2020 The 38th edition of Cevisama 2020 set a new record with more than 92,435 visitors
C
evisama, the international trade fair for the ceramic tile and associated industries, bathroom furnishings and natural stone, welcomed a total of 92,435 visitors to its latest edition, which ran from 3rd to 7th February at Feria Valencia. The figure is 1.4% up on for the previous year’s event. 21,364 of these visitors were international professionals, who had travelled from 156 different countries, an increase in itself of 5.86% on 2019 and an unprecedented figure in the 38-year history of the foremost platform for Spain’s ceramic tile industry. As the fair’s director, Carmen Alvarez, explains, “Cevisama has managed to attract the key markets for the ceramic tile and bathroom sectors, with 35% of all the foreign buyers who attended coming from the traditional European markets (Italy, France, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Germany) and the United States, which is currently the world’s second biggest buyer of ceramic tiles. The countries fielding the largest numbers of visitors included, in descending order: Russia, Morocco, India, Algeria, Poland, Belgium, Israel and Ukraine, along with the Netherlands, Turkey, Ireland, 92 The Tiles of India march-april 2020
Egypt, Bulgaria, Iran and Tunisia. The profile of visitors to Cevisama largely comprises retailers, distributors, manufacturers, sales agents, buying groups and specifiers, particularly architects and decorators. Specifiers are an increasingly significant target for Spanish manufacturers and a group that Cevisama’s organisers are endeavoring to attract in ever larger numbers. Several new initiatives were launched to this effect for this year’s fair, such as the Design Hall dedicated exclusively to novel propositions geared to architecture and interior design projects. The fair’s president, Manuel Rubert, has underscored the level of satisfaction the event delivered, not just in terms of the positive figures but, most of all “on account of the quality of the visitors who attended, which meant that exhibitors did close significant business deals.” Rubert also reiterated that march-april 2020 The Tiles of India 93

the percentage of product specifiers visiting the fair, especially architects and interior designers, is greater every year, “and what is driving that growth is both the effort invested in the exhibition content of the fair and the extremely high level of the presentation given at the Architecture Forum, which has become the leading forum of its kind in Spain.” Feria Valencia’s Cevisama team is already working on the preparations for the next year’s edition, which been set fresh objectives “to keep improving the service we deliver to our exhibitors and the value we deliver to visiting professionals,” according to Alvarez.
