TROPICAL FUEL CELL SYSTEMS FOR TELECOM APPLICATIONS Introduction Backup power systems are used to power electronic systems during grid power outages. Telecom companies, as well as Utilities and Railways need to be able to rely on their backup systems. Until now battery packs in combination with diesel generators have been the most common solution to bridge temporary grid failures. As technology is progressing and matures, better alternatives, designed and developed by Tropical, like it's PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) Fuel Cell powered backup systems, with suitableas well as modular power outputs (of 1kW, 2.5kW, 5kW, 10kW) for telecom applications. Specifically designed for all these applications, Tropical suggests 3 backup power solutions for telecom networks using fuel cell technology: 1.

FC-W system : Energy from R.E.S. for telecom backup The system includes an electrolyser for on-site production of Hydrogen, directly from renewables, using filtered rainwater. There is no limit on how much hydrogen you can produce and store, so all the renewable energy produced can be fully optimized, as opposed to batteries, which are fully charged in about 3 hours and the energy produced thereon is lost. A Fuel Cell Power Generator is also included into the system.

FC-H system : Energy from compressed Hydrogen for telecom backup The system includes a fuel cell power generator with one or more hydrogen storage tanks. Fuel cell installations are typically fueled by a six-pack of compressed hydrogen storage tanks. These containers each hold either 4000lt or 7500lt of hydrogen at a pressure of 200 bar. They have the combined capacity to power a fuel cell from 25 up to 100 hours.

Why are fuel cells the best backup power? Fuel cells are energy-conversion devices that can efficiently capture and use the energy-carrying capacity of hydrogen to power nearly every end-use energy need. Energy uses include portable devices, transportation vehicles, and stationary power stations, such as those used for the telecommunications industry. Fuel cells are more effective than batteries for backup power because they last longer and are more predictable. Even though batteries have a five-year life expectancy, their capacity diminishes with time, and they can be ruined if their charge is drawn too often. Fuel cells, however, can operate for ten years or more with undiminished power quality and quantity. Compared with generators, fuels cells are cleaner, quieter, pollute less and require little on-site maintenance. Fuel cells are environmentally friendly because they convert the chemical energy in hydrogen directly to electricity with pure water and heat as the only by-products. Other advantages of fuel cells for backup power include:     

How do fuel cell power plants operate? Telecommunication installations with backup fuel cell power often incorporate fuel cells and batteries. As the system voltage changes, rectifiers or controllers switch between the primary power source and the backup power sources. In the absence of grid power due to disruption or another primary alternating current (AC) power source, the fuel cells, or a combination of fuel cells and batteries, provide direct current (DC) power to run the equipment and charge the batteries (bridge power). When the primary power source is restored, the fuel cells shut down, and the load is returned to the primary source. When the hydrogen or methanol fuel supply in a fuel cell is low, a self-checking alarm remotely alerts the operator to replenish or fill in the storage tanks.

Do fuel cell power plants require maintenance? Fuel cells used for telecommunications backup power require less maintenance than batteries or generators, but they do require periodic maintenance. TROPICAL S.A. presents its all new TB-1000Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power System (Portable & Rack Version), producing 1200W of nominal electric power using the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology. The membrane on the fuel cell stack is converting hydrogen into electric power and the only “pollutant” is clean water. This power generator produces high quality electric power 110V or 230V AC & 12V, 24V or 48 DC (other voltages on request). It is designed to used as an Uninterruptable Power System (UPS), backup power system, as a stand alone power generator providing electricity to our homes, in grid back up, as solar hybrid with installed PV panels, in telecommunication towers or military applications or remote applications or for educational / demosntration purposes (Universities, Research Institutes, Colleges, R&D Projects, etc). Its main advantages are : modular, quite operation, small size & light weight, produce zero emissions, minimal maintenance, reliable, stable, remote monitoring & quick start operation. The TB series hydrogen fuel cell power system is being controlled by an intelligent controller which is operated by a 16-colored touch screen monitor. The management of the system is easily done through the touch screen monitor and although the system is fully automated, the user has the option to change which ever parameter likes followed by a 4-digit password. Moreover, data acquisition of the parameters can be saved on an excel file (SD memory card) and can be changed.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW - HOW IT WORKS Installing NG series FC Systems at you home or business is a quick & easy task. You simply connect the fuel cell system to your fuel supply (natural gas, LPG, Biogas, Methanol), add the deionized water supply, connect it to your space heating system and to your building’s electricity board and you are ready. The system will then use the supplied fuel to generate Hydrogen which is then used to feed the hydrogen fuel cell system. The fuel cell’s electro-chemical process that combines the hydrogen molecules with oxygen, will generate from 1.2kW up to 5.6kW of electricity power as well as 1.8kW up to 6kW of useful thermal energy to heat water (for space heating and domestic use with the aid of a water heat exchanger). When used for both electricity and heating, the NG series FC System will operate at over 93% efficiency and will yield significant energy costs reductions to your monthly bills. Furthermore, you can easily connect it with your solar photovoltaics and/or wind generators compromising a RES hybrid power system, friendly to the environment.

Role in Project Design and realization of a hybrid renewable energy polygeneration system. The energy of the sun and the wind is harvested by photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine. The products of this system are electrical energy, hydrogen as transportation fuel and potable water through desalination. Hydrogen was also used as energy storage. The specific components of the system include photovoltaic panels, a wind turbine, battery bank, PEM fuel cell, PEM electrolyzer, metal hydride tanks, hydrogen vehicle refueling subsystem, reverse osmosis desalination unit using energy recovery and a control system. The system has to cover the electricity and water needs of a house, as well as to produce enough gaseous fuel to power a small 5 kW Pure hydrogen car (FCEV).

Development and Testing of a Proton Exchange Membrane. The main objectives on this project were: - To study state of the art membrane electrode assemblies (i.e. catalyst and gas diffusion layers), which will be used as components in an operational PEM fuel cell. - To numerically reconstruct the microstructure of the gas diffusion electrode using a methodology that allows to predict the main transport properties (i.e. conductivity, permeability, etc.) with a relative error of 15% or less. - To calculate, through 3D computational fluid dynamics simulation, the flow field, temperature field and water vapour transport through the porous electrode, including the effects of the thermal conductivity of the electrode material. - To determine the factors, operational or structural, most influential to correct operation by varying them at least ±30% from nominal operating conditions. - To support the numerical effort through experimental measurements of the performance characteristics of a model PEM fuel cell, operating with the same electrode materials used in the simulations and under the same operating conditions. - To translate the results into specific requirements regarding operating conditions and porous material microstructure. - To support the results of the studies and to render them into marketable information with regard to specific PEM fuel cell applications.

Invitation RHEA-2014 is the second international conference being fostered by the project RHEA (Robot fleets for highly effective agriculture and forestry management, FP7NMP 245986). The RHEA consortium comprises a number of research centers, universities, and companies funded by the European Commission through the Seventh Framework Programme to develop robotic fleets for weed control and pesticide management in agriculture and forestry. RHEA-2014 aims to disseminate the RHEA project results and, at the same time, to bring together academicians, researchers, engineers, developers, students and companies to share and discuss both theoretical and practical knowledge on sustainable crop protection, weed control, automation and robotics in agriculture and precision farming.

Venue RHEA-2014 will be held at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) , Institute of Agricultural Sciences (CSIC-ICA) and the School of Industrial Engineers (ETSII) of the Polytechnic l h University off Madrid d d (UPM) ( ) allll off them located in the center of Madrid. This city has an air of modernity, which contrasts with its important old town and its cultural traditions. HYDROGEN METAL HYDRIDE STORAGE TANKS Solid Hydrogen Storage Tanks utilize proprietary metal hydride technology to safely store hydrogen in a compact manner at a low pressure. The metal alloy powder contained in the storage tank is formulated to absorb and release hydrogen similar to a sponge absorbing water. Canisters are designed to operate at ambient temperatures with no requirement for added heat and can store several times more hydrogen than similarly sized high-pressure compressed hydrogen cylinders.
