President of Tropical S.A., Mr. G. Lagios, has been congratulated by the Chairman of Microsoft, Mr. Bill Gates about his innovative products for which has been awarded a few minutes earlier.
Mr. Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft, visited Greece on the 28th of January 2008 and did the inauguration of Microsoft’s Innovation Center together with the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. K. Karamanlis and the Minister of Economics, Mr G. Alogoskoufi which is located at Vas. Sofias Avenue. Afterwards, Mr Bill Gates went to Athens Concert Hall and he was the keynote speaker at the event “Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Today’s World” which was organized by SEV & Microsoft where participation surpassed all expectations and Greek politicians as well as entrepreneurs responded warmly. TROPICAL S.A. participated on this event, in which Mr. Bill Gates together with SEV’s President, Mr. D. Daskalopoulo, awarded an honorary recognition to Tropical S.A. for its innovative products. During this event, a lot of innovative and ecological products that are being manufactured by Tropical S.A. have been presented on a video called “Greece Can” and highlighted examples and best practices of entrepreneurial and technological innovation that have been developed in our country and can serve as models for the entrepreneurial sector such as the Hydrogen Fuel Cell CityCar but also the full range of ecological (zero emissions) Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generators for home as well as industrial applications with power up to 200kW. The President of Tropical S.A. noted that the 3rd Industrial Revolution will be for the “water” and more specifically for “Hydrogen” which will be the fuel of the future thus providing electric energy & heating to our homes and power to our vehicles. Since today, Tropical S.A., has been developed more than 20 innovative and ecological products, most of them through research programs, such as hydrogen electrolysers, fuel cell power generators and Fuel Cell powered vehicles & motor yachts. All these products have something in common: No Pollutants – Zero Emissions – Friendly to the Environment European Union is actively supporting Hydrogen as an energy carrier and in order for Hydrogen Technologies to commercialize & move some steps forward, initiated the Joint Technology Initiative (JTI) European Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Platform. This platform is constituted from 50 Industry partners (such as Airbus, Daimler-Chrysler, BMW, Siemens, Rolls-Royce, Snecma, Air Liquide, Gamesa, Tropical, etc) who will deal with the Further Research on Fuel Cell products and hydrogen technologies in general so as to develop the products of the future. THE FIRST HYDROGEN REFUELING STATION IN GREECE The first Hydrogen Refueling Station in Athens using purely Renewable Energy Sources for the production of H2 is a newsworthy event. The Minister of Development, Mr. Dimitrios Sioufas, and the General Secretary of the Minister of Development, Mr. Nikolaos Stefanou, have initiated on Saturday the 19th of November the official opening of this pioneer Hydrogen Refueling Station with the aid of Wind Energy at the Wind Energy Park of CRES.
Simultaneously, during the opening ceremony, the Tropical’s Hydrogen City Car was successfully driven by the Minister of Development Mr. Sioufas who was unexpectedly surprised by the fact that a Greek based organization has managed to develop such a vehicle. After the successful completion of the First Hydrogen Refueling Station in Athens, the road towards hydrogen economy has been initiated. Therefore, the next step of Tropical S.A., after the completion of the Hydrogen Scooter & Hydrogen City Car will be the development of the Hybrid - Fuel Cell Minibus operating at Athens Historical Center and Inner City. The Hybrid - Fuel Cell Minibus project will start on January 2006.

With great success has been delivered the First Greek 2 Seated Hydrogen Fuel Cell City Car to the Centre of Renewable Energy Sources (CRES), Athens, Greece. After this, Tropical S.A. is included into the few companies worldwide that have managed to offer such a car which is friendly to the environment with zero pollution, especially after the last June’s delivery of a similar car to INETI Research Institute, Portugal. The delivery of the car took place the day before the “World Day of Environment” on the 5th of June 2008, where CRES and the Hydrogen Technologies Laboratory visited by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr K. Papoulias and the Minister of Development, Mr C. Folias. Both of them show great interest on this cooperation and of course about the development and operation of this zero emissions vehicle. After the completion of this car, now Tropical is focusing on the development of Hydrogen Fuel Cell City Buses. The Hydrogen Fuel Cells City Car uses an advanced and fully automated 1.8kW/dc fuel cell system and 36V voltage that charges the batteries with the aid of a charger. Then, by using a 5.2Nm3 low pressure metal hydride hydrogen storage tank, the car’s range has been increased to over 200km. At the moment it is located at the Headquarters of CRES, at Pikermi and in the near future it will be allocated to CRES technological park in Keratea (close to Athens), where it disposes most of the Renewable Energy Sources on operation for educational and laboratory uses and of course the First Hydrogen Refueling Station in Greece. This environmental friendly and zero emissions car is easily operated by the user and suits perfectly to Universities, Research Institutes, Colleges, Hotels, Golf courts, Recreational resorts, Stadiums, Airports, Rail stations, Hospitals, Big storage yards, Customs storage yards, Post storage yards, Rental operations, Theme parks, Zoos, Aquariums, Army, Navy & Air Force Bases, etc. Having always as first priority the reduction of environmental pollution on city centers, Tropical S.A. plays the leading part for one more time trying to improve our quality of life. Methane (primary biofuel)is produced from wastes which are stored on a 3.000lt Anaerobic Digestor and then is supplied to the fuel processor where it is reformed and hydrogen is extracted and fed to the PEM fuel cell that can produce 1kW electricity. Because of its silent operation as well as its compact size, these types of power generators are ideal for ups systems as well as on several applications. It must be noted that these types of Reformate Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generators can use widely available liquid fuels such as propane, LPG, NG while on the other hand with some small conversions can use all type of Biofuels. The main applications of these generators are focused on wineries, distilleries, multi-family dwellings, caravans/RVs, yachts, special vehicles, waste treatment plants, large industrial complexes, cottage houses, military applications & bases, universities, research institutes & laboratories, telecommunication & meteorological stations, hotels, hospitals, etc Having always as first priority the reduction of environmental pollution, Tropical S.A. plays the leading part for one more time trying to improve our quality of life. Then, by using a 1Nm3 (1.000lt) low pressure metal hydride hydrogen storage tank, the scooter’s range has been increased to over 150km. It has to be noticed that the whole fuel cell system has been mounted on a special designed box at the rack of the scooter and it can be used as a portable fuel cell system providing power approx. 500Watt. The delivery of a conventional diesel powered MiniBus to the Research team so as to convert it into the First Greek Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered MiniBus was taken place today at the Ministry of Transportation. The Minister of Transportation, Mr. M. Liapis, submitted personally to the team the MiniBus and stated the following: « Ministry of Transportation & Communication, having always as first priority the improvement of citizen’s quality of life, stands in front to this attempt for the reduction of emissions at the city of Athens. Enforces initiatives such that of Tropical S.A. and the Research team for the implementation of the First Greek Hydrogen MiniBus. Greece is one of the leading countries in Europe on the field of Research & Development concerning Hydrogen Technologies which is regarded to be the fuel of the future. That is why we would like to give a boost to this innovative technology which is developed to our country, so as to reduce emissions which cause the greenhouse effect and brings worldwide climate changes. With great joyfulness we hand over today this diesel powered MiniBus to Tropical S.A. and the Research team and I am really positive and with great hope that we are not far from the day where all the buses in Athens will emit only water from their exhaust pipes. » This ceremony, actually initiated the beginning of the conversion of this Diesel Powered MiniBus into a Prototype Hydrogen Fuel Cell MiniBus operating at the Inner Centre of Athens producing zero emissions. Therefore it will help us to move a step forward towards a cleaner planet trying to reach the limits for emissions that the European Union regulated. What is more important is the step towards commercialization of more Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered MiniBuses to the Greek market and an important issue on energy matters for which the Minister of Transportation, Mr. M. Liapis, showed great willingness to impel at the inner center of Athens step-by-step.
Research Team is composed from Greek Universities, Research Institutes and Greek Research companies which are: NTUA (National Technical University of Athens), Demokritos Institute, CRES (Centre of Renewable Energy Sources), Air Liquide S.A., Helbio S.A., Pros S.A., Diadikasia S.A. and Tropical S.A..
Tropical S.A. will do all the needed modifications concerning the body as well as and the chassis of the MiniBus and will design the “Roof Rack (grid)” that all the Hydrogen related systems will be integrated on it which includes the Fuel Cell system, the power inverters, the electronics & controllers compartment, the inverter tech a/c unit, etc.

71st INTERNATIONAL FAIR OF THESSALONIKI (HELEXPO 2006) 71st International Fair of Thessaloniki (HELEXPO 2006) was one of the most successful fairs that were organized this year in Greece from the 08th till the 17th of September 2006. On hall 7 with thematic title “Innovation” presented the most innovative products that have been researched and developed in Greece with the aid of the Ministry of Development. Hall 7 was visited by the Greek Prime Minister, Mr K. Karamanlis, escorted by the Minister of Development, Mr D. Sioufas, the Minister of Defense, Mr. E. Meimarakis, the Vice-Ministers of Development Mr. J. Papathanasiou & Mr A. Neratzis, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Development, Mr. N. Stefanou and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr V. Papageorgopoulos. Also during the fair the hall was visited by the Minister of Transportation, Mr. M. Liapis, the Minister of Northern Greece, Mr. G. Kalantzis, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. E. Stilianidis , the President of Helexpo Fair Mr Α.Thomopoulos and Miss Universe 2006, Miss Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza from Puerto Rico who had a ride with the Hydrogen GreenCar.

“Hydrogen Minibus” is a project on which the MiniBus uses hydrogen as a fuel, the fuel of the future. It is a vehicle that is friendly to the environment and with zero emissions as well as noiseless. It was designed and it will be developed for the needs of the inner city (city centers) where the distances are small and the embarkation / disembarkation from the passengers is often.
TROPICAL S.A. teamed-up with HELBIO S.A. to develop a novel, efficient and portable Fuel Cell Power System to meet the challenge of off-grid applications. The product addresses the needs of leisure activities such as campers / caravans / RVs, boats, remote cabins, special vehicles etc. It uses the widely available liquid fuels (propane, LPG) typically employed in such activities. Hydrogen is extracted from the fuel in the fuel processor and feeds a PEM fuel cell that can produce up to 1.5 kW electricity.

The International Exhibition DEFENDORY 2006 took place in Athens from the 3rd to the 7th of October 2006 participating hundreds of organizations from Greece as well as from all over the world presenting interesting products for defensive armament. On this exhibition, EAS S.A. (PYRKAL – EBO) was also participating and presented noteworthy and innovative products that are related to the Renewable Energy Sources and the Hydrogen Technologies. Great impression has made to the visitors showed the hydrogen fuel cell power generator which was operated constantly during the exhibition. Also, great interest was shown from officers (army, navy, air forces, etc) from Greece as well as from Foreign countries that visited the exhibition for the fuel cell power generator HT-1000 that uses as fuel natural gas. The stand of EAS S.A. was visited from the Minister of Defense, Mr E. Meimarakis and it was thoroughly informed from the President of EAS S.A. (PYRKAL – EBO), Mr. Fintanidi as well as from the President of Tropical S.A, Mr. G. Lagios, for the cooperation of TROPICAL S.A. with EAS S.A. (PYRKAL – EBO) which lead to the development of a portable fuel cell power generator which uses hydrogen as a fuel and it can be used into the Greek Armed Forces as power generators since they are noiseless and with zero emissions. The stand was also visited by the Deputy Minister of Defense. Mr. B. Michaloliako as well as from high rank employees and officers of the Ministry of Defense which of course have been informed for the hydrogen technologies and the hundreds of applications that can have.

72nd INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR OF THESSALONIKI (HELEXPO 2007) 72nd International Trade Fair of Thessaloniki (HELEXPO 2007) was one of the most successful fairs that were organized this year in Greece. The President of the National Observatory of Athens and Member of the Academy of Athens, Mr. C. Zerefos (Awarded with Nobel Peace Prize 2007), has been informed by the President of Tropical S.A., Mr. G. Lagios, about the capabilities of the hydrogen fuel cell 3-wheeled scooter and the innovative fuel cell power generator, HT-1000, operating with reformate hydrogen from fuels like natural gas, lpg, biofuels, etc. Also, Mr Zerefos informed about the exact phase that the Hydrogen MiniBus project is at the moment, the next steps and the Ecological Green Fire Truck.
Tropical S.A. exhibited & presented to its visitors its full range of fuel cell products including: 1. “GREENFIRETRUCK”, an ecological zero emissions fire vehicle (electric, solar & hybrid versions) for immediate & express interference 2. “GREENSCOOTER”, a three wheel scooter operating with a complete hydrogen fuel cell system and a metal hydride storage tank. 3. “HT-1000’’, a fuel cell power generator producing 1kW of electric power, using reformate hydrogen being produced by reforming natural gas, lpg, biofuels, etc. 4. “TR-100”, a portable hydrogen fuel cell power generator producing 100W of electric power with voltages 12V/DC and/or 220V/AC 5. Several hydrogen products for demonstration and education purposes. 6. A poster related to the Hydrogen minibus project and the ceremony that took place at the Ministry of Transportation in Athens. which was organized by the First established Hydrogen University in the world at Bari, Italy from the 19 to the 21 of September 2008. The workshop started with the speech through video projection from the “guru” of Hydrogen Technologies, Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Economy, Mr. Jeremy Rifkin. Then, Mr. Lagios (CEO & President of Tropical S.A.), who was officially invited as a guest and as talker and presented the activities of Tropical on the Hydrogen & Fuel Cell department. All the participants showed great interest. Numerous products that have been presented some of them under continuous development and some them at pre-commercial stage such as the hydrogen fuel cell power generators, the hydrogen fuel cell city car, the hydrogen fuel cell scooter, etc. During the workshop, a memorandum was signed for the establishment of the first Hydrogen University at Bari on the th
20 of September 2008. The memorandum was signed in attendance of great guests from Greece as well as from other countries all around the world. From Greece were invited: Mr G Lagios, President & CEO of Tropical S.A., Mr A. Vrachnos, President of the Greek Government commission for Ecologic & Green Transportation, Mr. N.
