FACTS ABOUT ROMERIKE
Romerike, from Old Norwegian Raumariki, ‘the realm of the Raumar’, in Akershus county consists today of 13 municipalities. The northernmost part of Enebakk, which today is part of the Follo region, was along with Odalen traditionally as well considered part of Romerike. As of July 2009, Romerike has 242.361 inhabitants, living on 3.806 square kilometres. The relatively flat topography makes the region a bountiful farming area. The rivers Vorma and Glomma conflux at Nes in Romerike.
Municipalities Aurskog-Høland Plenty of opportunities for enjoying the outdoors! Wide forests and idyllic lakes make for experiences summer and winter alike. Hiking trails stretch from most populated areas to places to swim and camp, and in the winter, ski trails crisscross the municipality. At Aurskog, the old rectory – Aur prestegård – is preserved as a cultural heritage site. Eidsvoll Situated at Romerike’s extreme north, Eidsvoll has diverse hiking terrain ideal for trips on foot and skis. Skreikampen and Mistberget are the municipality’s most elevated points. Eidsvoll has a special place in Norwegian railway history; Norway’s first railway, inaugurated in 1854, terminated at Eidsvoll.
Fet Named from Old Norwegian fit, ‘lush meadow by water’, Fet is idyllically situated east and north of Lake Øyeren. The terrain along the lake is made up of cultivated sand and clay sediments, which further east eases into hilly forests. Northern Europe’s largest inland delta forms where the river Glomma meets Øyeren, providing a nature preserve with unique flora and fauna. Gjerdrum Gjerdrum is situated in the western parts of the Romerike plain. The agricultural areas reach from Leira River westwards to the eastern ridge of the Romerike Hills. The area’s distinctive feature is the ravines, reaching from 110 to 205 meters above mean sea level. Hurdal Hurdal is among Norway’s most wood-covered municipalities, and is also the most mountainous municipality in Romerike: at 812 m amsl, Fjellsjøkampen is the tallest peak in Romerike. Hurdal as well has the tallest waterfall in Akershus, Vesleelvfossen. For anyone who enjoys the outdoors, Hurdal is a find! Lørenskog Motorway and railway link Lørenskog westwards to Oslo and eastwards to the rest of Romerike. The oldest archaeological discoveries in this hilly landscape date back some 5000 years. Østmarka, laden with footpaths, ski trails and lakes invite to year-round use, and the Losby area has evolved into one of the Oslo area’s major destinations.
FACTS ABOUT ROMERIKE
Nannestad Winding trails in dramatic ravines and diverse fauna along streams and rivers – Nannestad’s scenic cultural landscape is situated between the airport and the Romerike Hills. Miles of well-prepared ski trails in fields and forests, exiting forest roads and marked hiking paths make trips on foot or bike events to remember. Nannestad’s nature is unique, wild and diverse. Nes Among lush grain fields and deep forests, Norway’s two largest rivers, Glomma and Vorma, meet in Nes. Here, people have lived for appr 3000 years. When Christianity was introduced in the 12th century, a church was built at Nes Farm. The church burnt to the ground and was re-erected, but after another fire in 1854 it was left in ruins. In 1912, it was decided to keep the ruins and maintain the churchyard for coming generations. Nittedal Nittedal’s landscape stands apart from the other municipalities on the Romerike plains. Nittedal is a narrow valley situated below and between forest-clad hills. The valley floor is dominated by agriculture. The Nitelva River is the spine of the valley, as it winds and falls southwards from Lake Harestuvannet on its way to Øyeren. When the river is flowing low, it even allows canoeing. Rælingen Much of Rælingen is covered by woods, fields and lakes. Situated between Østmarka and Lake Øyeren, everything is ready for an active outdoor life. The hilly forests provide great hiking destinations, in summer as well as winter.
Skedsmo The rivers Nitelva, Leira and Sagelva put their distinctive marks on this municipality, along with a diverse cultural environment and heritage, burial mounds, and historic infrastructure. The Nebbursvollen outdoor bathing and recreation area is situated by Nitelva, providing, pools, playgrounds, waterslide and other attractions. Sørum This municipality, at the heart of Romerike, is criss-crossed by the rivers Leira, Rømua, Åa and Glomma. The waterways have been used by people since early historic time, and Sørum is laden with archaeological finds and burial mounds. The opportunities for enjoying the outdoors are plentiful in Sørum, webbed with trails and forest roads. Many trails are marked for hiking, and the rivers are a delight for paddlers. Ullensaker 40 km north of Oslo, Ullensaker is well set up for outdoor life. The flat landscape with its net of trails and forest roads is ideal for riding bikes or horses. The landscape along the ravines and some lakes may also be dramatic. Romerike Landskapsvernområde is a ravine with dense broadleaf vegetation. The largest burial mound in Scandinavia, Rakni’s Mound, lies in Ullensaker. With several preserved old roads and treks, Ullensaker is still a logistic hub with major railways and roads, as well as Oslo Airport.

ROMERIKE INSIGHT
A REGION OF COMPETENCE AND DIVERSITY Romerike is a large and composite region, while still within an hour’s drive from Oslo. In spite of Romerike’s current affiliation with the international airport and high-speed trains, the region has traditions reaching back far beyond modern times, and a diversity that encompasses way more than mass transit. Travelling Through Romerike’s History The Gothic historian Jordanes described Raumanicae for the first time in AD 550. This is what today is known as Romerike. For at least 1400 years, Rakni’s Mound has been at the centre of Romerike. Little is known about the region before this burial mound, but natural conditions indicate that few people lived here before that time. In the later middle ages, Romerike is likely to have been an important thoroughfare for pilgrims going from Oslo to Nidaros. Industrial History Millions of years ago, petrified ocean floor and volcanic activity created the bedrock and minerals of Romerike. Later, rocks like gold ore, emeralds and soapstone, and minerals like lead, zinc, copper and iron ore have been found here. These occurrences founded a thriving mining industry, which expanded to iron and glass works, as well as gold and emerald mines. The remains of such industries are today open to the public all over Romerike. Lumber History As timber became a sought-after commodity in Europe in the 1500s, this became Norway’s most important export, and the industry expanded at Romerike. The rivers doubled as logging transports and energy for sawmills. Several log-sorting facilities (lenser) was established to organise timber floating.
Transport History As the timber industry expanded, the need for better communications evolved. Norway’s first railway opened between Christiania (Oslo) and Eidsvoll in 1854. Further transport northward was by boat on Lake Mjøsa, and in 1856 D/S Skibladner, today the world’s oldest paddle steamer in continuous use, started operations. The most modern part of Romerike’s transport history is Oslo International Airport, which opened at Gardermoen in 1998. War History From the 16th to the 19th century, the people of Romerike got to know the challenge of living between the Norwegian capital and the aggressive neighbours in Sweden. Several relics of defensive fortifications remain today. Blaker Skanse, the Toverud Bauta, Urskog Fort, Fetsund Battery, Høgås Battery, the refugee trail and the Trandum memorial all bear witness to Romerike’s wartime history. Trandumskogen (Trandum Woods) in Ullensaker was among the first mass graves discovered in Norway after World War II. 173 Norwegians, 6 Britons and 15 Russians were executed here. Today, a memorial marks the site, with a text reading: IN THE COMBAT FOR FREEDOM DURING THE 1940-1945 WAR 173 NORWEGIANS 15 SOVJETSUBJECTS AND 6 BRITONS WERE HERE IN THE WOODS OF TRANDUM EXECUTED BY THE ENEMY

Eidsvoll 1814 Norway is worldwide known for its celebrations throughout the nation of the Constitution Day on the 17th May with parades and national costumes. Nearly 200 years ago the reason for these spectacular celebrations, the Constitution, was signed on the 17th May in Eidsvoll Manor, and hence the Eidsvoll Manor was the centre of events in the dramatic year of 1814 – a decisive one in modern Norwegian history. Ever since the Eidsvoll Manor has been one of our most famous national symbols and
dearest national treasures. Due to the restorations, the Eidsvoll Manor will be closed for the public from 15.08.2011 until 1.1.2014 with occasional guided tours, when works on the house allows it. But in the mean time our visitors centre Wergelands Hus offers you to experience the house through film, treasures and paintings as well as detailed information from the house. Our exhibition on contemporary Norwegian history is an engaging experience and our modern cafeteria over viewing the river is a
perfect place for a coffee break. In the 18th century ambience of our museum shop you will find an unusual selection of gifts and souvenirs. Although history has made Eidsvoll Manor important, the building itself is an extremely interesting place to visit because of its architecture, which is quit unique in Norway. There will be even more to see once restoration work is completed in time for the bicentenary celebrations in 2014!

BIKING Scores of forest roads and paths in the Romerike Hills, Østmarka and other woodlands are perfect for enjoying Romerike’s natural splendour from the seat of a bike. Country roads are a nice alternative, too, allowing you to combine the bike ride with a visit to one of the many cultural attractions. There are many pre-marked bicycle treks available. National bike route no 7 passes through Romerike as part of the Norwegian national bike route network, and is marked between Lørenskog and Minnesund. For centuries, Romerike has been characterised by important thoroughfares, and the oldest road systems date back to pre-historic times. The roads went where it was practical and functional; on ridges with dry, easily traversable ground, crossing rivers and lakes where one could swim or be ferried across. Bike
routes follow the lush cultural landscape in the most populated areas, and follow in part the old tracks.

ROMERIKE INSIGHT
A day-trip through the Medieval landscape Join the pilgrim trail for a day through the cultural landscape of Ullensaker. Close to Oslo and Gardermoen international airport, yet within a beautiful agricultural landscape, visiting one of the most spectacular Early Medieval monuments of Northern Europe. Start the trip by half an hours train journey from Oslo to Kløfta station. At Kløfta station, turn east through the railway underpass, and follow Kongsvingerveien until you join the pilgrim trail at Galgehaugen (the gallow’s hill). Turn north along the pilegrim trail. After one kilometre walk you are aproaching Ullensaker church. The earliest recorded church at this place was built during the 12th century. The stone church was dedicated to the Norwegian patron saint Olav Haraldsson († 1030) and St. John the Baptist. After a mudslide destroyed the church in the 15th centruy, a wooden stave church was erected in its place. This structure was replaced in 1768 with a larger, corner-timbered church that survived until a fire in 1952. The present church is designed by the famous Norwegian architecht Arnstein Arneberg. Arneberg included construction elements of the three earlier churches in the building. These appear in the silhuet of the church at different angles. A statue of the archaengle Michael can be seen above the door. Acording to Snorri Sturlasson, Chritisanity was introduced in these parts of Romerike after the battle of Nitelva, c. 1020, where Olav Haraldson conquered the local Raumar. Several churches at Romerike are dedicated to St. Olav. The pilegrim trail continous north from Ullensaker church, until you cross the highway and railway-line and approach the farm of Ullern (approximately 2.5 kilometers). In bygone years, Ullern functioned as a main-road coach station. The trail follows Kjerkevegen through the underpass and left (due south-west), then turns right at Asperveien. From this point the trail follows one of the oldes known routes between Oslo and Nidaros. The walk goes through a varied terrain of ploughed fields and woodland.
Om Raknehaugen: http://akershus.kulturnett.no/ historie/raknehaugen/index.html
After 2 kilometres you approach the farm of Børke. Several rich gravfinds from the first centuries AD have been made in the area. Up ahead lies Hovin church. The place-name Hovin suggests the presence of an ancient power centre and a focal point for pre-Christian cult. You are now at the heart of the early medieval Romerike, the petty-kingdom (riki-) of the Raumar. After conversion to Christianity, a church was erected here. The present church is a cornertimbered cross-chuch, dedicated in 1695. The Hovin farm was one of the largest landed properties at Romerike during the middle ages. The majority of the land was in church possesion. Continue along the road past the school and turn right on Ljøgotvegen; literally “the public road”. Further ahead lies one of the most impressive monuments of 6th century Northern Europe; Raknehaugen (Rakni’s mound). The 15 meter tall barrow is constructed from sand, earth and 75,000 lengths of timber. Probably, the building of the monumnet took the concerted efford of 500 people over 6 months. You have a good view of the landscape from the top of the mound. A levelled cemetary of smaller viking age mounds have been
ROMERIKE INSIGHT documneted on the west side of the barrow. This was also the site of a princely hall building, the size of present barn. East of the barrow, two small mounds are still preserved of the cemetary this side. It is possbile to enjoy one’s lunch at Raknehaugen or a swim a swim in the neighbouring Lake Ljøgottjern. This is one of a number of glacial cettle lakes in the area and a natural reserve. The trail continous to the farmstead of Haug (hillock) through
a marked depression in the landscape that has been created by travellers over the centuries. At the farmyard the pilgrim trail turns left (north) along the majestic birch alley. Instead, you continue straight ahead, eventually down hill and through an underpass. Follow the ancient footpath Gropavegen, onto Gardermovegen. Ahead is the centre of Jessheim. You can follow Storgata (the main street) to the railway station.

Bronze Age and Iron Age Cairns Across Haneborgåsen in Lørenskog, a system of 12 burial cairns, dating to the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age (c. BC 1000 – AD), are located. A visit to the cairns offers a nice walk along the crest of the hill. From around 2000 BC, the increased extraction and use of copper and copper-alloys forged large exchangenetworks across Europe and Levantine areas. Bronze used for personal objects, weapons and items of symbolic or ritual importance had to be imported to Scandinavia. Scandinavian wool, furs and amber were on the other hand highly priced commodities further south. Attempts to control surplus production and exchange led to the emergence of social elites. The Bronze Age monuments at Haneborgåsen are most likely the direct result of this social development. Several of the monuments have been reconstructed in resent years. During the Late Bronze Age, burial cairns were common. The graves are often located on hilltops or close to land- or sea routes, with good overview of the landscape. Some of the
cairns have central stone chambers where the deceased were laid to rest. The same cairn can comprise several subsequent burials. The burial-customs varied significantly across the millennium. Large cairns were probably grave markers for persons of social importance, but could also signify the land rights of a particular social group. The burial-ritual itself was used by the living to emphasise their power and social position. The graves could contain personal jewellery, toiletteries or weapons, all carefully selected. Some graves also contain carved slabs with symbolic imagery. Social status, gender, profession and changing belief-systems are likely to have affected the selection of gravegoods and the burial rite. Often, little is preserved. However human cremated bones were found in one of the cairns at Hanborgåsen.
