New Productions Spring Summer 2011

On 8 March 1990 West Yorkshire Playhouse opened its doors to the public, so In 2011 we’ll be celebrating our 21st birthday and we’d love you to join the party. For 21 years West Yorkshire Playhouse has been at the forefront of British theatre, making great work with some great people. We‘ve worked with exciting new theatre makers and collaborated with renowned actors and leading theatre companies. Almost four million people have passed through our doors and we’ve been able to share with them the very best productions and our deep conviction that theatre inspires us all and can change people’s lives.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the fierce loyalty of our audiences. You let us know when we’re doing a great job, and you let us know when we’ve let you down, so we can make changes. But the most important thing is that you keep coming to the Playhouse. There are difficult times ahead and the arts will need to continue stating its case for funding both nationally and at a local level. It’s your support that will help us do that.

Leeds has certainly changed in the intervening years. We’ve been joined on Quarry Hill by Leeds College of Music, The BBC, and Yorkshire Dance and, most recently Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre, whilst the town centre and Leeds market would be almost unrecognisable to the playgoers of two decades ago!

We’ve loads of special events planned for our birthday year. Our birthday season mixes a little of everything we do well. Join us to enjoy classic dramas, vibrant new work, a large scale musical, family shows and a startling new Courtyard Theatre transformation. Reflected features two new dance works, Richard Wherlock’s sensual and vibrant Switch and an innovative blend of aerial dance and contemporary choreography in Watson’s own Melt, the UK premiere of Philip Taylor’s What It Is and a welcome return for audience favourite Pave Up Paradise.

Hester left her husband for another man. Left the security of the well respected judge for wild, unpredictable, sexy Freddie – an ex-fighter pilot. Now she’s reached the end of the line. Freddie’s raffish charm has worn thin and Hester is forced to face the reality of life with a man who doesn’t want to be with her. The simple act of a forgotten birthday pushes her to desperation point and to facing a future that offers no easy resolutions. Rattigan’s reputation was founded on his mastery of the ‘well made play’. Now, one hundred years after his birth, it is his skilful creation of troubled, emotional characters that has brought audiences and critics alike to re-visit his plays with renewed appreciation. Lorca is one of the few indisputably great dramatists of the twentieth century Observer

5 to 26 March West Yorkshire Playhouse by Federico Garcia Lorca adapted by Ursula Rani Sarma What if the one thing you wanted from your life was the one thing you couldn’t have? Yerma longs for a child with every fibre of her being. When presented with Juan for a husband she takes him not for love, but for the chance to start a family. Now that is denied to her, the world ceases to make sense. Locked in a small town inhabited by smaller minds, Yerma begins to push against the rules, searching for truth and assistance in people and places that are not considered socially acceptable. Her innocent actions send a ripple through a community whose twisted minds fashion it into a tidal wave. Scorned and misunderstood by her people and faced with the reality of a life spent childless with a man she does not desire, Yerma commits the ultimate act of rebellion. This production is supported by The Quercus Trust and National Theatre Studio.

A well known rabbit attempts to stop an alien blowing up the earth. In a Berlin café a professor pleads with her student not to commit an atrocious act. And in a London department store the weirdest ever episode of Are You Being Served? is about to begin. This sinister comedy of ineptitude examines extreme acts of violence, the lengths people will go for their beliefs and how powerless we are to stop them when they have reached a point of no return. Shared Experience and Watermill Theatre co-produced with Oxford Playhouse How did three Victorian spinsters, living in isolation on the Yorkshire moors come to write some of the most powerful and passionate fiction of all time? It is 1845. Branwell Bronte returns home in disgrace. Plagued by alcohol and drug addiction, he has been dismissed from domestic service following an affair with the mistress of the house. A tragic death sparks a forbidden passion and a brother and sister seal an erotic, but fatal pact with each other. Inside a corrupt and violent Italy, brother and sister cling to each other with what they feel is right. But plot and counter-plot threaten to overwhelm Annabella and Giovanni as they struggle to keep their forbidden love secret. By turn darkly comic and brilliantly horrific the play moves towards its fateful conclusion. As potent today as it was in 1633, Ford’s tragic love story is one of the most powerful and controversial ever written. This exhilarating new production is set in the 1960s and brought to the stage by director Jonathan Munby, praised recently in The Guardian for his ‘gorgeous production’ of The Prince of Homburg at the Donmar Warehouse.

Whatever your political colours, whichever side of the aisle you stand on, it’s clear to everyone that the city and the country we live in is radically changing. Everything is shifting. For theatres like West Yorkshire Playhouse and for the companies involved in trans form there is an opportunity to re-imagine and reinvent, to provoke and inspire. At the invitation of Artistic Director Ian Brown, Alan Lane at Slung Low and Kully Thiarai will reconfigure the Courtyard theatre for a time and transform how we make work through collaboration. As our world is transformed around us, so theatre must transform too; finding new ways of creating works, of telling stories, of connecting audiences and artists.

John Shuttleworth A Man With No More Rolls ‘Sheffield’s finest synthesizer player and twaddle talker’ (Daily Telegraph) decides it’s time to instruct the Nation in moral matters. Well, he would have done – had next door neighbour and sole agent, Ken Worthington not mistyped the show’s title turning ‘morals’ into ‘more rolls’. John’s reaction to this mishap is philosophical. At least now his new show can consider – not just the Nation’s moral decline – but the vast range of exotic breads appearing in the high street.

Daniel Kitson The Interminable Suicide Of Gregory Church Gregory had fifty seven letters to write. He’d never written that many letters, not in one go. In fact, he’d never written a single letter and it was taking significantly longer than he’d anticipated. He glanced at his watch and then at the noose hanging over his head. Had he known how long suicide letters take, he thought, he wouldn’t have cancelled the milk for the morning.

‘Eccentric, far fetched and unbelievably good’ The telegraph

Extreme Rambling (Walking The Wall) Never one to take the easy option, award-winning comedian and activist Mark Thomas decided to go rambling in the Middle East and walked the entire length of the Israeli Separation Barrier crossing between the Israeli and the Palestinian side. This is the story of 300,000 settlers; a 750 km wall; six arrests, one stoning and too much hummus.

One Man Star Wars Trilogy Charles Ross spent much of his childhood in a galaxy far, far away, watching Star Wars videos over – and over – and over again. The result of this mis-spent youth is his hilarious show, One-Man Star Wars™ Trilogy, where he single-handedly plays all the characters, sings the music, flies the ships, fights the battles and condenses the plots into just sixty minutes!

You’ve Got The Key To The Door It’s our birthday and we want to celebrate it with you! We’re pulling out all the stops with a host of events throughout the year including an Open Day, special exhibitions and a 21st Birthday Festival Stage in the Bar area. Plus much, much more – keep checking the website for details.

21st Birthday Open Day 2 July, 10am – 4pm We’re flinging open our doors for a 21st Birthday Open Day. No corner will be left unturned and every nook and cranny of our building will be full of workshops and activities. Step onto our interactive set and become a member of the Playhouse’s technical crew operating the lights, sound or special effects for a short play, go on a backstage tour, join our community choir for The Big Sing and enjoy a birthday lunch on sale in the cafe. Our cultural partners on Quarry Hill will join us on the day for an extended Open Day and Summer Party to celebrate together as part of the newly formed Quarry Hill Creates.

Northern Ballet, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Leeds College of Music, Yorkshire Dance, the BBC, Red Ladder, East Street Arts, SAA UK, The Northern Acting School, DepArts and The Wardrobe will all be opening their doors and offering you something unique on this special celebratory day.

If you’re struggling to identify the production photographs then don’t worry – there’s a full list on our website. A big thank you to all of the photographers whose work we’ve included in this brochure.

We’d love you to be on the 21st Birthday Gift List EACH YEAR WE RECEIVE DONATIONS AND GIFTS IN KIND. AS WE CELEBRATE OUR BIRTHDAY WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO HAS GENEROUSLY GIVEN OVER THE LAST 21 YEARS. Some donations are small, some are very generous – but whatever the amount, we are always extremely grateful. Without your support we would not be able to stage the quality and quantity of productions that we have built our reputation upon. We would not be able to carry out the extensive education and community projects that inspire young people and bring communities together. As part of our celebrations, we’re inviting you to be on our Birthday Gift List. For any donation over £10 we will publicly acknowledge and thank you in the following ways: • Your name in our production programmes throughout the year of our 21st birthday. • Your name on our Birthday Gift List which will be displayed prominently front of house and on our website. All donations will go straight towards supporting our work on and off stage. To find out how to be on The 21st Birthday Gift List please contact Kate Jeeves on 0113 213 7211 or email her at kate.jeeves@wyp.org.uk.
