Woodturning is at the heart of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history, after many years ago incorporating the respected Coronet Lathe Company. Record Power lathes and accessories stand for high quality design and innovation since 1946.

Choosing the Right Lathe There are a bewildering variety of lathes on the market so choosing a lathe can be a daunting experience. This guide will help in the decision-making process by simplifying and explaining the essential features to consider. If you will be mainly turning spindles then capacity between centres will be most important. When turning bowls and platters, a swivel head lathe will be very useful and capacity between centres will be less important. Extra power will also be needed if large bowls are to be turned. For the occasional user perhaps needing a lathe just for turning parts for furniture, a basic model with manual speed change may be sufficient. If the intent is to take up turning as a serious pursuit, there will be great benefit in the extra power, weight and rigidity that a larger lathe provides. In addition to allowing projects to be carried out more quickly and confidently, deeper cuts can be taken due to increased power and weight and ease of use features such as variable speed control make turning more enjoyable.

Lathe Accessories Record Power offer a comprehensive range of accessories. The choice of faceplates, woodscrew chucks, live centres and long hole boring kits (to name but a few) give the woodturner great flexibility in meeting their needs. These are available in a range of thread sizes to fit not only Record Power lathes but also many other brands. Adaptors are also available to maximise compatibility across a wide range of machines.

Beds Ideal materials for lathe beds are cast iron or steel bars which provide the strength, weight and rigidity required to help dampen vibration. Bed bars are hard chromed heavy steel and allow the use of kinematic faces to give very accurate tolerances and are very easy to keep clean. The rigidity of this solution provides ample support for heavy-duty work and is a tried-and-tested manufacturing method which takes its heritage from the Coronet series of lathes. Cast beds are an alternative design and originate from the largest woodturning lathes which are designed for very heavy-duty work, although many smaller machines now feature cast beds too. The bed length will define the maximum capacity between centres when spindle turning so ensure that you buy a machine with adequate capacities for your requirements or with the option to add extensions at a later date should your requirements change.

Variable or Manual Speed Change? Most turning is done between 500 and 2000 rpm with manual speed change lathes typically offering between 4 and 6 speed choices within this range by changing a belt on a stepped pulley drive. All Record Power lathes feature Poly-V belts which give optimum surface contact, grip and torque. Changing the belt position is a relatively quick job and manual speed change machines offer excellent value for money, however most serious woodturners use variable speed lathes. Whilst you can achieve the same results on a manual machine, having the power to instantly adjust the speed to your exact requirements not only markedly increases productivity but also enjoyment of the turning process too. Record Power offer two main systems for variable speed control â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we use the latest motor technology in our DC drive solution to make it fast, responsive, reliable and very compact. The power and torque on offer, particularly on our innovative Coronet Herald model, are second to none and set a new standard for this type of solution. The second system is widely used in machine tools and industry, using a three-phase motor and inverter to convert a single phase supply to drive the machine. The three-phase motor provides excellent torque and the inverter provides the control to vary speeds. Both systems are professional solutions and should not be confused with lower cost options such as expanding pulley systems which can suffer from noise, vibration and accelerated belt wear.

Chucks & Jaws Our exclusive SC range of premium woodturning chucks and jaws have been carefully developed with professional woodturners and keen amateurs to offer optimum quality, effectiveness and value for money. The high standard of this range is unsurpassed - we have engineered out the superfluous features of some of the common designs that are widely available and also combined the functionality of some jaw sets into one jaw design. The condensed range of 14 jaw designs offers woodturners all the functionality they need and all jaws are compatible with both models of chuck. The SC3 is the smaller chuck in the range and offers the same build quality as the larger SC4, which has some extra features including the ability to fit an insert to the rear, ensuring compatibility across a huge range of lathes when used in conjunction with an insert of the relevant thread size.

Build Quality The build quality of a lathe is critical in producing a high standard of finish to the turned work. Record Power lathes are produced to a high specification across the range - all machines are built from grey iron and steel which gives weight and rigidity, absorbing vibration and allowing for accurate results.

Turning Tools Fixed or Swivel Head? The advantage of a swivel head is to increase the capacity of the lathe so that you are not restricted to the swing over the bed and also to give greater access to the workpiece. Left-handed turners in particular will find a lathe with a swivel head essential in order to avoid working awkwardly over the lathe bed. If required, optional bowl rests are available to make the most of the larger capacities that swivelling heads offer.

Chisels are obviously critical tools for the woodturner. Recognising this, Record Power produce a comprehensive range of essential profiles for all kinds of work. The high speed steel blades and ergonomically designed handles make them the obvious choice for professionals and novices alike.

Some lathes feature a fixed headstock and an outboard turning facility (turning from the opposite end of the headstock than is usual, to gain more capacity) but outboard turning requires a host of left-hand thread accessories to be purchased.

Lathe Fitments A wide range of fitments are available for all Record Power lathes to enhance the performance and increase capacities. Bowl rests allow the capacities of swivel head machines to be fully realised and all leg stands have been specially designed to minimise vibration whilst providing rock solid support. Bed extensions are also available, giving greater capacities between centres.

What Makes a Premium Chuck? The SC Series from Record Power is a range of Premium chucks and Jaws for the serious or professional Woodturner. Developed through consultation with both hobby users and professional woodturners as well as specialist woodturning retailers

we have designed what we believe is the most flexible and best value system in its sector of the market. When there are so many similar looking chucks available - what actually makes a premium chuck?

Quality

in terms of its accuracy of location and enabling a wider range of threads to be accommodated. This helps woodturners who want to future-proof potential upgrades to their lathe or may have a large machine and a bench machine with different thread spindles. We now offer an uninterrupted series of indexing holes on the backing plate of the SC4 which can be used with a bench or lathe mounted jig that can be made up to best suit your own machine.

Premium chucks invest in tooling for repeatable accuracy, utilising processes such as sintering and investment casting. This tooling can represent a significant investment, so many cheap copies often machine such components from steel, often using manual or CNC machines and with variable results. Repeatable accuracy is important not only to deliver the same performance from one chuck to another and ensure safety, but also for backup and support as well as accurate fixing and use of accessories and jaws. The scroll ring, pinions and jaw carriers are critical components in any chuck, as is accurate machining of the body. Record Power use sintered jaw carriers and investment casting for scroll ring and pinions to ensure these have high tolerances. The bodies are machined on modern 3-axis CNC machines to ISO 9001:2008 standard and very tight tolerances to ensure the best balance between ease of scroll and an accurate fit, with some resistance to reduce wear and play in the carriers. The finish of the body and components is to a very high standard and care has been taken to chamfer the edges so the whole finish is smooth and sleek, meaning that not only do they look impressive, they feel great to hold. Lower quality chucks tend to possess a rough finish, with poor surface consistency and sharp edges.

Design

Chucks are intended to offer a flexible workholding system for woodturners. It is therefore critical that the chucks themselves are easy and safe to operate, intuitive in use and have an adequate jaw range to suit as many applications as possible. In our redesign of the SC range we have made the scroll action more intuitive, reversing the scroll so you close with a clockwise action and open with an anti-clockwise action. We have improved the insert system both

The jaw range has been significantly rationalised to 14 jaws that cover virtually all applications most woodturners will ever need. Utilising our research with serious users - both professional and hobby - we adapted our jaws to have as many functions as possible without duplicating too many of the abilities of other jaws in the system. This means each jaw has a clear role in the woodturnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arsenal, making jaw selection easier and because we have condensed these functions into as small a range as we think viable, it makes it a very economic system to invest in. We have increased the width of the jaw slides to provide better support to the jaws and use the most common mounting hole locations so that jaws can be used with our previous range of bodies and their jaws can be used on our new bodies. There are also several other brands that use the same locations on their jaw carriers making an even wider range of jaws potentially available if there is a really specialist requirement that is not in our core range. Importantly the jaw carriers and scroll ring (which provide the grip and power) are identical in both chucks and share the same jaw mounting holes. This ensures that the full range of jaws is available for either chuck and with the same performance - so additional bodies and jaws will always be compatible throughout the system with no compromise in performance.

It uses the same scroll and jaw carriers as the SC4 and has a smaller body because the scroll is engaged through a hole in the side of the body using a traditional chuck key. This is the lowest cost solution, removing the need for intermediate pinions and reducing body size and steel and without affecting the performance of the chuck. Supplied as direct thread bodies only (in the 3 most popular threads for Europe), removing the additional cost of an insert and simplifying the machining. The backing plate is also not present on the SC3 as there are no pinions to keep in place and it is not essential. integral pinions to drive the scroll ring, giving the benefit of being able to use a ball-end hex key for easier operation. It also offers the option of adding aftermarket hex keys with longer shafts if you have particularly large work mounted. A backing plate keeps the pinions in place and features indexing holes as well as keeping all the internal mechanisms much better protected from dust and resin so the requirement for maintenance and cleaning is much reduced. Perhaps most importantly, this chuck is provided as an ‘insert’ chuck and an insert of choice is included in the price. This provides the user the opportunity to use the chuck on more than one lathe with different thread spindles by simply changing the low cost insert rather than requiring an additional body. An insert also provides future proofing so that any machine upgrades will not require a new chuck even if the spindle thread changes, just a change of insert.

Jaw Capacities Explained We are frequently asked what the best sized jaws to use for certain types of project are. It is a common misconception that the wider the range of sizes a jaw will accommodate (as quoted in their expansion and contraction specifications), the more useful and therefore better value they must be. This is not the case - As any professional woodturner will confirm, whether expanding into a recess or contracting onto a spigot, the more contact the jaws have with the wood, the better the hold. This means that jaws grip most effectively when in a contracted state. If the jaws are fully open, the contact with the wood will be minimal and the grip weak.

The One Third Design Principle This is a principle to which most woodturners work when turning bowls and platters. As a general rule, the work will look most balanced when the diameter of the recess or spigot of the bowl is one third of its overall diameter.

Our pin jaws have been improved by squaring the external shoulder to allow workpieces to properly register against the back of the jaws. This is ideal for use in expansion, to grip tubes in work pieces such as pepper or salt grinders. We have also reduced the internal diameter to 9 mm, making it ideal for making finials or lace bobbins - Thereby increasing its versatility. Introducing the Coronet Herald Record Power have always focussed intently on our customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs and this was the starting point when we decided to develop the first of our new generation of lathes, the Coronet Herald. RPMS-R-MK2 Cast Router Table with Sliding Table A good router table not only extends the versatility of your machine, it makes repeatable and accurate work much easier. Using a table with properly guarded fences for your work can also improve safety. Our popular table has been upgraded in several key areas to provide even greater value for money. The RPMS-R Router Table is a heavy and well specified accessory suitable for a wide variety of routers and applications. The heart of this table is its finely ground cast iron table which provides a solid and stable foundation for all functions. When you consider the weight, power and speeds of modern 1/2” routers the importance of a solid table should not be underestimated and weighing in at 54 kg the RPMS-R is one of the heaviest on the market, with the wide base and angled legs adding even greater stability.

Mounting System The universal router mounting system can accept virtually any router due to the adjustable clamps and two sets of T-slots either side of the aperture.

Clamp A heavy duty clamp holds the timber in position preventing any movement or slipping while undertaking end grain work and can be re-positioned and clamped at an angle when required.

Independent Adjustment Both fences operate independently and offer micro-adjustment.

In addition to the main cast table, there is a sliding aluminium table with cross cut mitre fence and hold down clamp for undertaking end grain work. The main fences can be set independently and feature micro adjustment. The table has three pairs of tapped holes so the fence can be easily repositioned to accommodate different sizes of workpiece. Also, when profiling, the fence can be reversed so the operator does not need to lean over the sliding table and can work comfortably from the other side of the machine utilising the main cast table itself. A dust extraction hood is fitted to the main fence and guard area and a no-volt release switch is included.

For example, a furniture maker requiring a machine to cut accurate veneers, tenons or to re-saw will be better served by a machine that can take a wide blade, has a deep solid fence and a powerful motor. However, for the woodturner wishing mainly to cut bowl blanks, of greater importance will be the ability to fit and track narrow blades for radius work. Also, a good sized table with enough support for the bowl blank to the right of the blade and good blade guides to counter side pressure when cutting is more important. Make sure the strengths of the bandsaw model match your main application requirements.

When you buy one of our machines you can be confident of long-term performance and support. Deciding What to Spend Bandsaws are so useful and versatile that the vast majority of first time buyers upgrade from their first purchase, usually a small model, to a larger machine very quickly once they appreciate what an indispensable tool it is. Bandsaws vary greatly in quality, capacity and price and it is instinctive to select a machine based on your current expected minimum requirements. Although nobody wants to spend more than they have to, it often avoids frustration and is more cost effective in the long run to consider a larger machine, depending on budget and space.

Band Wheels

The construction of the bandsaw has a major bearing on its longevity, accuracy and reliability. Shown here are the key aspects to consider in purchasing any bandsaw and how Record Power compares with the competition at similar price points.

Machine Frames

Band wheels are the drive mechanism for the blade. For a quiet and smooth cutting performance it is important that wheels are well balanced. For accurate blade tracking good quality tyres must also be fitted. Record Power Bandsaws On all our larger bandsaws (BS300E, BS350S and BS400) the wheels are made from cast iron which is strong and helps to increase the flywheel effect. They are dynamically balanced and have thick rubber tyres which are easy to track and will give years of service. This solution is essential on the larger capacity machines to ensure they can withstand the tensioning forces of larger blades and the rigours of heavier use.

Key Aspects of Bandsaw Construction

Other Bandsaws Many of our competitors use the more lightweight alloy wheels. This is a suitable solution for smaller bandsaws but it is not uncommon to see alloy band wheels on much larger machines that really need a more heavyweight design, so compromising the life of the bandsaw.

The frame must be capable of withstanding the stresses created from the blade tensioning system. If the frame is not strong enough it can distort and cause the top and bottom band wheel boxes to pull together, damaging the machine and rendering it useless. Record Power Bandsaws On our larger premium machines the frames are folded and welded from industrial grade sheet steel and designed with a wide ridged spine for extra rigidity. The band wheel boxes are also fabricated with additional webbing to increase rigidity and strength. Other Bandsaws Even on large capacity machines, many of our competitors weld band wheel boxes to a piece of standard rolled hollow box section for the spine. This option is suitable only for machines with relatively small capacities, up to 6â&#x20AC;? depth of cut for example, and simply does not have the adequate strength or rigidity for use on medium and larger sized machines. When considering a bandsaw always check this aspect of construction as it is critical on the more heavy-duty machines.

Fence

Motors

A rigid fence is essential for accurate straight cutting – ripping, veneer cutting or cutting tenons for example. It is also important that the fence or fence mount can be adjusted to ensure squareness to the table and blade. Record Power Bandsaws The fences on our premium range are based on our Startrite industrial bandsaws, featuring deep extrusions mounted on solid steel bars with steel and cast fence clamps. The mounting bar is clamped to the table with sturdy bolts and allows adjustment to ensure squareness and will be rock solid once set. The aluminium extrusions found on the smaller BS9 and BS250 machines are an excellent and costeffective solution for machines of these capacities, providing plenty of support.

Other Bandsaws Most of our competitors use the aluminium extrusions for the fence and rail mount throughout their ranges, even on very large capacity machines. Whilst this does keep costs down a little, it also reduces the life and performance of the machines and is inadequate for their size.

A good quality motor with plenty of power is essential. The more deep cutting you intend to do, the more power you will require. Record Power Bandsaws Record Power motors are designed to provide ample power for the capacities of the machines and are the fan-ventilated, quiet induction type. We always make the input and output ratings very clear, yet most of our competitors only quote the input rating as the motor power but ensure you always get an accurate output rating when comparing machine specifications because this is the most meaningful rating and will be lower than any quoted input ratings.

Other Bandsaws Many of our competitors use lower powered motors for the same capacities as Record Power machines which may cause the machine to struggle and shorten the life of the motor.

Blade Guides The purpose of the blade guides is to prevent the blade from twisting whilst cutting. Guides will need re-adjusting whenever different blade widths are fitted and often require tweaking even when the same width blade is used so ease of adjustment, good access and clear views are beneficial. Good support over a wide surface area will provide the most accurate results. Record Power Bandsaws The blade guides on the larger Record Power machines (BS300E, BS350S and BS400) feature easy change roller guides with wide surface areas for increased blade support and simple adjustment with good access and minimal need for tools. Other Bandsaws Many of our competitors use cheap and inadequate roller bearings as blade guides on larger models, some of which are configured so as to offer minimal contact with the blade and consequently less stability and support.

Blade Tensioning A critical factor for accurate straight cutting. Even a good quality blade will perform poorly under inadequate tension. The springs and slide mechanisms in the top band wheel box need to be strong enough to apply pressures up to 20,000 psi and the frame of the machine needs to be strong and rigid enough to not distort under those pressures.

Tables The table is the support and working area of the bandsaw. Along with the rip fence it is also the datum from which many cuts will be taken so a level and strong surface is clearly a great advantage. It is also important that the table can be set accurately at 90º to the blade so a solid table mount with good adjustment is a great benefit. Record Power Bandsaws Record Power are famous for extensive use of high quality cast grey iron – and our bandsaw tables are no exception. Large and heavy for maximum support, our tables are finely ground to a polished finish to minimise friction, and the premium range have mitre slots on either side of the blade to enable a wide variety of angles to be cut with ease. The premium range trunnions are a one piece doublesided casting for rigidity featuring a rack and pinion table tilt to make accurate angles easy to achieve – even one handed. The trunnion sits on a plate on the top of the bottom bandwheel box and features jacking screws to make accurate levelling an easy task.

Other Bandsaws Many of our competitors use smaller tables with roughly machined surfaces that can impede the progress of the work-piece. Most have only one mitre slot to the right of the blade, making mitres on wide work-pieces impossible to achieve and most do not have rack and pinion tilt mechanisms so have to be tilted by hand. This can be difficult to do accurately on larger machines with heavier tables and you often get movement just as you try to nip it in position whilst only supporting it by hand.

They are seated on heavy duty trunnions, machined to ensure smooth and accurate movement and also provide rock solid table support over the full range of table positions. The tables themselves are large, heavily ribbed and surface ground for flatness. The heavy duty band wheels are cast iron Balanced and fitted with high quality rubber tyres to aid tracking, giving the essential torque needed when performing heavy duty cutting. Planer Thicknesser Buyer’s Guide Thicknesser Function A planer thicknesser really makes joinery easier and releases you from the frustration and expense of relying on preprepared timber, helping to reduce cost and improve quality.

The Role of a Planer Thicknesser The main job of the planer is to produce a totally flat and square datum point for the thicknesser to work from. Once this is achieved the thicknesser accurately and rapidly dimensions all your timber to the required size making accurate joinery a simple job. One of the main advantages of being able to plane your own material is that it enables you to reclaim used timber and reduce costs by using unprepared stock whilst giving you full control of the quality and dimensions of your timber. Often pre-prepared stock can be twisted or warped, making it very difficult to remedy without a planer and thicknesser and compromising consistent dimensions. A planer is also useful for preparing stock for other machining functions – for example creating a truly flat datum to be used against a bandsaw table and fence for cutting thin and accurate veneers. Once in the workshop it will prove an invaluable tool.

The ideal material for the thicknessing table is machined cast iron and it wants to be generous enough to handle longer stock easily. The thicknessing table is usually either supported by four threaded rods, in which case it is important these are housed in a brass bush to provide smooth height adjustment. The alternative, more industrial solution, is a large central column which provides strong support and easy height adjustment. The most common capacities for thicknessing are 6” to 8” (generally machines are 10” x 6” to 12” x 8” with some variants available). Bear in mind that 8” stock, particularly if it is also wide and/or long will be heavy and take a lot of machining so even if your machine has a nominal capacity of 8” thicknessing ensure it has the motor power, build quality and weight to handle timbers of that size.

Build Quality The heavier the build of the machine the more capable it will be of handling larger or heavier wood and the more capable it will be of longer production runs. It is important that you purchase the correct machine for your requirements. Assess the level of work to be carried out and select your machine accordingly.

Motors

The surfacing table of the planer is an important aspect to consider. Cast iron is the more suitable option for a professional woodworker with ribbing on the underside to provide extra strength and eliminate any movement. On models where the table is removed for thicknessing or a lighter machine is required for frequent transport – perhaps to site – a machined cast aluminium table may be a suitable option because it is light but strong. The most common capacities outside of large production machines are up to 10” wide boards or up to 12” wide boards. 10” is more common on hobby and site machines and 12” is a popular small joinery size. If you plan to handle a lot of longer timber then go for the longest surfacing tables you can get within your budget as this will make straightening a much easier job.

Key Aspects To Consider The construction of the machine will clearly have a major bearing on its longevity, accuracy and reliability. Shown here are the key aspects to consider when purchasing any planer thicknesser.

Ideally motors should be induction and have reasonable power. A rough guide would be at least 1.6 kW (2 hp) for a 10” x 6” machine and 2.2 kW (3 hp) for a 12” x 8” machine. How to Dimension Timber Accurately using a Planer Thicknesser Most woodworkers, whether amateur or professional, will invariably at some point need to use a planer thicknesser. There are various reasons for this:

A question we are often asked, particularly at woodworking shows and demonstrations, is why we need to use a planer as well as a thicknesser to achieve the above.

1. Cost - Rough sawn timber can be bought at a lower price than pre-planed and can then be dimensioned to the exact size required for the project. Even when paying a premium for pre-planed timber it is often irregularly sized or warped and so needs further preparation.

Many woodworkers decide they can make do with a standalone thicknesser. These machines have a great deal of appeal to those relatively new to woodworking as they are less costly than a planer thicknesser and can be bench mounted. However, as can be seen below, a standalone thicknesser is simply not capable of dimensioning all four sides of a piece of timber accurately.

2. Most projects require timbers to have adjacent edges at 90º, particularly when jointing is required. 3. Often pieces must be exactly the same size as each other when used for jointing.

The Diagram opposite shows an exaggerated cross section of a typical rough-sawn piece of timber which will be used to illustrate the different results that can be achieved using both a standalone thicknesser and a planer thicknesser.

How a Thicknesser Works

Firstly, surface A will be cut to be parallel with surface C. To achieve a planed finish to surface C, the workpiece is rotated 180º and passed through the thicknesser again.

Now these opposite faces are parallel, we can see by turning either surface B or D face down on the table that we are only able to plane them parallel to each other but never at 90º to surfaces A or C.

Adjacent faces cannot be planed at 900 to each other. It can now be seen that no matter which way the timber is turned, only a parallelogram profile can be achieved.

How a Planer Thicknesser Works The key to understanding how a Planer Thicknesser works is that in order to plane all four sides at 90º to each other, we must first plane two adjacent sides to 90º. Only a Planer Thicknesser is capable of this. Using the below method, any number of pieces can be planed and dimensioned to exact sizes by adjusting the position of the thicknesser

bed. This preparation gives you the best base possible for carrying out the rest of your projects successfully. If for example you are to make a window frame, using a planer thicknesser allows for all four sides to be planed and dimensioned to the exact same size, making jointing much easier and also ensuring all surfaces are flush on completion.

Professional Engraver

The Record Power Burgess engraver has been the standard industrial engraver for many years. Table Saw Buyer’s Guide With the ability to rip and cross cut solid timber as well as re-sizing sheet material quickly and accurately, a good quality table saw is essential for most keen woodworkers and is likely to be the starting point for many projects.

Choosing the Right Table Saw Table saws vary in size, quality and cost, so knowing what the saw will be used for is an important factor in choosing a suitable machine. If its purpose will be the machining of solid timber for furniture and cabinet work then a good depth of cut, solid rip fence, powerful motor and heavy cast table should be prioritised. If cutting mainly sheet material, the rip capacity from blade to fence, a good quality sliding carriage with suitable support and generous stroke will be the most important features. If the sheet material will be mainly veneered, a machine with a scoring blade to minimise chipping will be invaluable.

Deciding What to Spend The accuracy and performance a good table saw offers really makes this machine the heart of many workshops so it is essential to choose with care to not only ensure best value for money but also that the table saw will perform as expected. If the right machine is beyond budget, it is often better to wait and buy later rather than try to struggle with an inadequate model.

Key Aspects of Table Saw Construction There are many elements that contribute to the accuracy, capacity and longevity of a table saw. The following is an essential guide to what to look out for when choosing a machine.

Rip Fence & Rails

Mitre Fences and Slots

A sturdy, accurate and easily adjustable rip fence is essential for accurate rip cutting. It should also be adjustable to allow precise alignment with the blade and table. It should be possible to set the fence to extend just past the centre of the blade to avoid binding of the timber against the fence which can result in kickback. Record Power Rip Fence & Rails Our rip fences use sturdy extrusions mounted on a heavy iron casting for solid support. Cam action or brass screws provide quick, simple and solid locking mechanisms with micro-adjustment as standard. The fence rails are industrial style solid steel bars with adjustable bolt mountings as found on industrial machines.

Others’ Rip Fences and Rails Many of our competitors use aluminium extrusions for the fence rail rather than solid steel bars. These provide minimal support and are prone to flexing which greatly reduces accuracy. They are often clamped directly to the table, leaving crude shimming as the only option for adjustment.

Record Power table saws feature a highly accurate mitre fence system which uses the sliding beam to securely hold and move the mitre fence towards the blade. The traditional method of using a table slot to move the fence is inherently flawed, as the slot itself must be wide enough to allow easy travel, making the mitre fence a loose fit and therefore introducing the potential for inaccuracy. The Record Power system eliminates inaccuracy and table friction and means the fence can be moved close to the blade for maximum support of the timber. Sliding Beams and Squaring Frames All Record Power table saws feature sliding beams for accurate cross cutting. It is important that beams have good, wide support and be easily adjustable to ensure alignment with the blade. When larger sheets need to be handled regularly, a squaring frame with adequate support is invaluable and makes sizing sheets accurately an easy job. Record Power Beams All Record Power beams offer adjustment to ensure accuracy to the blade and give excellent support for the stroke requirements of each machine. The bearings are high quality to give smooth action, resulting in a superior cut.

Others’ Beams Some competitors offer beams with poor quality bearings that do not hold their accuracy and provide bumpy action. Adjustments can rely on crude methods such as shimming and access to adjustments can be difficult.

Internal Construction and Trunnions It is critical for the motor and saw unit to have rigid support - only with sufficient support can the blade be accurately and securely positioned. Record Power Internal Construction and Trunnions All Record Power table saws feature heavy cast iron saw units to house the blade, drive mechanism and motors – this provides strength, rigidity and dampens vibration. The saw units are supported by substantial cast iron trunnions which are machined for accurate and smooth operation when tilting. Trunnions are mounted to the frame to further isolate the table from vibration and provide strong support, as found in industrial panel saws.

Others’ Internal Construction and Trunnions The internals are without a doubt the most differentiating factor of table saws, yet due to their nature are also the most easily overlooked. Many manufacturers take full advantage of this by skimping on internal construction. Alloy castings simply screwed to the table, steel pressings and even bent pins welded to a steel saw housing and hung from a thin steel bracket are just some of the common poor quality alternatives to the heavy-duty Record Power approach, giving little support, highly inadequate torsion resistance and compromised accuracy.

Tables The table is the main support and datum for your work so it needs to be smooth, flat and sturdy. Unless you need a portable saw for site use, the ideal material for a table is cast iron which retains its accuracy and provides a solid base for your projects. Record Power Tables All Record Power table saws feature generous cast iron tables which are surface ground to provide a flat, smooth and accurate surface for your work. Optional table extensions are available to increase the capacity to the right of the blade if required.

Others’ Tables Some of our competitors offer tables that look like cast iron but are in fact cast aluminium which is simply not as robust or strong. Those that do offer cast iron tables often omit the expensive and timeconsuming process of surface grinding, resulting in an inferior table surface. Ensure that any extension tables provide adequate rigidity and accuracy – foldaway or quick change tables may look appealing but it is very difficult to offer these features without compromises in the rigidity of the extension and poor surface alignment.

Blade Rise, Fall and Tilt To use a table saw safely, accurately and to its full capacity it is important to be able to adjust the height and angle of the blade quickly and easily. Record Power Rise, Fall and Tilt All Record Power table saws feature separate handles and mechanisms for accurate and easy rise, fall and tilt of the blade. The mechanisms are driven by thick steel bars with rolled acme threads for rapid, smooth and easy adjustment with minimal fuss. Each handle can be locked firmly in place with ease.

Others’ Rise, Fall and Tilt A common cost-saving ploy is to combine the rise, fall and tilt into a single mechanism where you often have to push the rise and fall handle into a rack to tilt the blade. Not only can this be awkward and difficult but is also difficult to retain pressure whilst adjusting. Some machines even have the tilt mechanism lock on the opposite side of the machine, making access difficult and dangerous as the operator is forced to lean over the top of the blade. It is not uncommon to see plastic racks and / or pinions these do not provide the strength or longevity of the Record Power system.

Weight Weight of construction is important as it is with any machine. The heavier the machine, the more stable it is when in use and the less it will be affected by vibration. Weight also provides a good indication of the quality of components used during manufacture. Unless you need a portable machine for site-use, a heavy machine is better for supporting large sheets and heavy timbers.

DS19 Compact Drill Stand The DS19 drill stand offers a premium quality entry-level stand with similar features to the successful DMS26. The most important part of any drill stand is the rise and fall mechanism. Many machines have inferior systems. However, the DS19 features a precision manufactured rack and pinion rise and fall, with a solid precision ground column to provide steady, smooth and accurate movement.

Guarantee

Record Power guarantees that for a period of 5 years from the date of purchase the components of qualifying Products (see clauses 1.2.1 to 1.2.9) will be free from defects caused by faulty construction or manufacture. 1.2 During this period Record Power, its Authorised Distributor or Authorised Dealer will repair or replace free of charge any parts which are proved to be faulty in accordance with paragraphs 1.1 above provided that: 1.2.1 you follow the claims procedure set out in clause 2 below; 1.2.2 Record Power, our Authorised Distributor or Authorised Dealer are given a reasonable opportunity after receiving notice of the claim to examine the Product; 1.2.3 if asked to do so by Record Power, its Authorised Distributor or Authorised Dealer, you return the Product, at your own cost, to Record Power’s premises or other approved premises such as those of the Authorised Distributor or supplying Authorised Dealer, for the examination to take place; 1.2.4 the fault in question is not caused by industrial use, accidental damage, fair wear and tear, wilful damage, neglect, incorrect electrical connection, abnormal working conditions, failure to follow our instructions, misuse, or alteration or repair of the Product without our approval; 1.2.5 the Product has been used in a domestic environment only; 1.2.6 the fault does not relate to consumable Products such as blades, bearings, drive belts or other wearing parts which can reasonably be expected to wear at different rates depending on usage (for full details contact Record Power or your local Authorised Distributor); 1.2.7 the Product has not been used for hire purposes, by you or by a previous owner; 1.2.8 the Product has been purchased by you as the guarantee is not transferable from a private sale. 1.2.9 where the Product has been purchased from a retailer, the 5 year guarantee is transferable and begins on the date of the first purchase of the Product and in the event of a claim under this guarantee proof of the original purchase date will be required to validate the warranty period.

Claims Procedure

Limitation of Liability

2.1 In the first instance please contact the Authorised Dealer who supplied the Product to you. In our experience many initial problems with machines that are thought to be due to faulty parts are actually solved by correct setting up or adjustment of the machines. A good Authorised Dealer should be able to resolve the majority of these issues much more quickly than processing a claim under the guarantee. 2.2 Any damage to the Product resulting in a potential claim under the guarantee must be reported to the Authorised Dealer from which it was purchased within 48 hours of receipt. 2.3 If the Authorised Dealer who supplied the Product to you has been unable to satisfy your query, any claim made under this Guarantee should be made directly to Record Power or its Authorised Distributor (for details of the Authorised Distributor in your country please see your Product manual or check www.recordpower.info for details). The claim itself should be made in a letter setting out the date and place of purchase, and giving a brief explanation of the problem which has led to the claim. This letter should then be sent with proof of the purchase date (preferably a receipt) to Record Power or its Authorised Distributor. If you include a phone number or email address this will help to speed up your claim. 2.4 Please note that it is essential that the letter of claim reaches Record Power or its Authorised Distributor on the last day of this Guarantee at the latest. Late claims will not be considered. 3.1 We only supply Products for domestic and private use. You agree not to use the Product for any commercial, business or re-sale purposes and we have no liability to you for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity. 3.2 This Guarantee does not confer any rights other than those expressly set out above and does not cover any claims for consequential loss or damage. This Guarantee is offered as an extra benefit and does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

This Guarantee applies to all Products purchased from an Authorised Dealer of Record Power within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
