STATION SIGNALS
Dear Friend, As I write this month’s letter, it appears that the new President and Congress may delay the planned end of analog television broadcasting scheduled for February 17. This is in large part a response to the federal government running out of coupons to help over-the-air television viewers purchase digital converter boxes. It’s a problem that needs to be addressed. It is also a reaction to finding out how important free over-the-air television is to so many people in the country, especially in rural areas and the inner city. We’ll continue to provide the latest information about the transition on television, radio and online, especially since the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) selected WXXI to help lead the community education effort about the transition to digital TV. You can read more about the FCC contract we were awarded on page 5. If you already have a digital converter box, I encourage you to hook it up and make sure it’s working properly. If you have questions, we’ll be able to help. Best of all, you’ll receive additional digital channels from WXXI – more educational programming, more news and information, and more of the programs that you’ve always enjoyed. Whether the transition takes place on February 17, or in June as proposed, we’ll be here to help you through it. Again, if you already have a digital television receiver, or you subscribe to cable or satellite, you won’t need a converter box. You’ll continue to receive your favorite programs without any changes. Of more immediate concern to the future of WXXI is a proposal by Governor Paterson to slash by 50% state operating aid to public broadcasting. This would have a very negative impact on programs and services provided by WXXI (especially educational programs). In these difficult economic times, everyone is making sacrifices and tightening belts (and we’re no exception). A 50% cut, however, is out of proportion to other reductions in the education budget. Please let Governor Paterson and your Assembly Members and State Senators know that you support a restoration of operating funds for public broadcasting. We’ll keep you posted on our progress on our website, WXXI.org. In the meantime, I want to share some very good news with you on community support for WXXI. I am gratified to report that we have about 1,000 more members today than at the same time a year ago, a solid show of support for public radio and public television in the Greater Rochester area. The latest independent Nielsen ratings for WXXI-TV were the best in nearly a decade, especially for our documentaries and news and public affairs programming (we continue to have the largest audience for children’s programming of any station locally). I trust you agree that our Albany correspondent, Karen DeWitt, has done an outstanding job keeping our radio listeners informed about the State’s fiscal situation (and changes in control of the Legislature). Finally, take a few minutes to review our line-up celebrating African-American history this month. It’s the kind of in-depth educational and enlightening programming you only find on public broadcasting. Thanks for helping to make it possible through your support for WXXI. Have a Happy Valentine’s Day and let’s all hope for an early spring! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein, WXXI President & CEO e-mail: norms@wxxi.org

Celebrating Black History Month CONGRESS CONSIDERS DELAYING THE FEBRUARY 17 ANALOG SHUT OFF DATE. STAY TUNED TO WXXI FOR MORE DETAILS. Lady Writes the Blues: The Rose Marie McCoy Story airs Saturday, February 14 at 3 p.m. on AM1370/HD91.5-2
WXXI VOICES LECTURE Producer/Director Katrina Browne presents her film Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North at 12 noon on Sunday, February 22 at WXXI’s Studios, 280 State Street in Rochester.
At the end of the American Revolution, thousands of African-American slaves risked everything to fight for the British in exchange for a promise of freedom. John Clarkson, a young Royal Navy lieutenant, was sent to North America by British abolitionists to fulfill that promise. According to plan, each slave would be resettled in Nova Scotia. However, when that frigid, rocky terrain proved inhospitable to those who had worked the cotton fields of the Deep South, Clarkson arranged for them to be transported across the Atlantic to Sierra Leone. Using journals, diaries and autobiographical accounts, writer-narrator Simon Schama (Simon Schama’s Power of Art) reconstructs this epic journey. Simon Schama’s Rough Crossings, airing Monday, February 16 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, is just one of many television and radio programs WXXI will broadcast to commemorate Black History Month. For radio programs, see page 35, and for a complete list of radio and television specials, visit WXXI.org/bh. WXXI is also hosting its second annual African American Educational Awareness Film Series, every Saturday in February from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at its studios (280 State Street). The screenings, each followed by a discussion, are free and open to the public. Read more about the series, the films featured and how to reserve your seat by turning to page 7. Finally, on Sunday, February 22 at 12 noon, WXXI presents a very special screening and lecture with producer/director Katrina Browne. Her documentary, Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North, a P.O.V. presentation, is about Browne’s slave-trading ancestors and their complicity in slavery. See the back cover of this program guide for details about the Voices lecture and ticket information. Memories of the Movement: A Black History Month Special hosted by Tavis Smiley airs Saturday, February 21 at 3 p.m. on AM 1370 and WXXI-FM HD 91.5-2.
FCC SELECTS WXXI TO LEAD THE REGION’S DTV OUTREACH EFFORT On January 8, 2009 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) selected WXXI as one of 12 agencies across the country to assist the FCC with its DTV consumer education program. With this contract WXXI will implement an outreach initiative to help over-the-air viewers in the Greater Rochester area prepare for the digital transition. WXXI will build on the work it has already done, and dedicate more effort in reaching those who need help the most – seniors, citizens in rural areas, disabled citizens, and minority communities. The contract will be used to provide: a toll-free telephone help center where trained technicians and personnel will be on hand to answer callers’ questions 14 hours a day; a “street team” crew of converter box installers to provide in-home assistance to those needing more assistance than through a phone call; educational community based events and educational print pieces.

DTV Transition Delay
Still have questions?
Even though Congress may delay the analog shut off date, you shouldn’t delay being prepared for the DTV Transition. So are you ready? If you have cable, or subscribe to satellite TV, then you are! Your television signal will not be affected by the digital transition as long as you keep your cable or satellite subscription. If you receive your TV signal through an antenna and you do not subscribe to a pay-TV service, then you will lose your television signal when analog is shut off. You have one of three options to insure you don’t lose it:
Here are few commonly asked questions we’ve been asked.
1. Purchase a digital television converter box, 2. Subscribe to a pay-TV service, such as cable or satellite, 3. Or, replace your TV with a new digital tuner equipped TV. DTVs are available starting at just $100.00.
Where did DT 21.4 go? The programming on WXXI-DT 21.4 has merged into WXXI’s high definition channel, WXXI-DT 21.1. All your favorite programs, many in high definition, can now be found on WXXI-DT 21.1 (cable 11 or cable 1011). What about my VCR, DVD player, camcorder, and gaming console? Will I be able to use them with a digital television set? Yes. Digital television sets are “backward compatible,” meaning existing analog equipment (VCRs, DVD players, camcorders, video games, etc.) will work on digital TV sets. However, their video will only be displayed in the maximum resolution that is available with each analog product. Manufacturers are producing a number of different connectors to hook equipment together and improve picture and sound quality when DTVs are used with existing analog equipment. Check with your retailer to determine the types of connectors that will work with your equipment. How do I know if I already have a digital TV (DTV)? Many DTVs and digital television equipment will have labels or markings on them, or statements in the informational materials that came with them, to indicate that they contain digital tuners. These labels or markings may contain the words “Integrated Digital Tuner,” “Digital Tuner Built-In,” “Digital Receiver,” or “Digital Tuner,” “DTV,” “ATSC,” or “HDTV” (High Definition television).
SPOTLIGHT ON A WXXI BUSINESS PARTNER
Rowe Photo, Video and Audio “Many people do not realize that Rowe Photo is not just a photo store anymore. We have a fully Rowestaffed audio, video installation department with an A/V department that has grown in the last two years to require the support of ten trucks!”
—Richard Rowe President, Rowe Photo, Video and Audio
It is certainly an impressive achievement that a local business has served the Rochester area for more than 110 years and through three generations. Charles M. Rowe opened his business in 1898, and today it is still managed as a family-run business by his grandson, Richard Rowe. Rowe Photo, Video and Audio is a consumer retail store with three locations: Mt. Hope Avenue, Greece, and Webster. Rowe has evolved over the years. Today Rowe sells photo equipment, such as digital cameras, tripods, lenses, gadget bags, batteries, digital picture frames, and video camcorders. In addition, it sells flat panel high-def TVs, video furniture, video projectors, and DVD players, as well as a large variety of audio components, audio furniture, and loudspeakers. Rowe’s in-house installation staff handles custom installation of flat panel TVs, whole house audio systems, and programming of single remote control systems in homes and commercial businesses. Richard Rowe explained Rowe’s partnership with WXXI: “I have always loved PBS programming, which has entertained and educated me for a long time. No other vehicle can bring you this kind of local, national, and world information. I am now proud to be able to support WXXI, their programming, and the good that they bring to the community. The citizens who listen and view what WXXI has to offer are highly educated, have greater spending power, and seem to care greatly about their community. Since 1898 this has always been our customer base, and by partnering with WXXI we can remind our patrons, in a subtle way, of our presence in the marketplace.” When asked if he has any favorite WXXI programs, Mr. Rowe’s response was, “I like This Old House, Antiques Roadshow, and many of the special shows that only PBS can produce.”

A Moveable Feast WITH AMERICA’S FAVORITE CHEFS Don’t miss this special salute to American cooking traditions, featuring six of the country’s favorite chefs to represent the diversity of food and culture that makes the US the world’s great melting pot: Simply Ming’s Ming Tsai; Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie’s Ruth Reichl; Lidia’s Italy’s Lidia Bastianich; Mexico - One Plate at a Time’s Rick Bayless; Made In Spain’s José Andrés; and America’s Test Kitchen From Cook’s Illustrated’s Chris Kimball. Setting the stage for a show full of mouth-watering dishes perfect for family and friends, the program begins with all of the chefs sharing the stage in a communal kitchen. Then, in the spirit of a potluck dinner, each chef contributes a single course to the banquet, then “passes the plate” to the next chef. It concludes with all six chefs tasting the dishes of their colleagues at this one-of-a-kind progressive dinner and sharing stories about their dishes. LINCOLN In celebration of the Lincoln Bicentennial, WXXI is pleased to present Looking for Lincoln, a two-hour special that explores the life and legacy of the man widely considered one of America’s best and most enigmatic presidents. Hosted by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., Gates shows how the Lincoln legend grew out of controversy, greed, love, clashing political perspectives, power struggles and considerable disagreement over how the 16th president should be remembered. His quest to piece together Lincoln’s complex life takes him from Illinois to Gettysburg to Washington, DC, and face-to-face with people who live with Lincoln every day—relic hunters, re-enactors and others for whom the study of Lincoln is a passion. LOOKING FOR LINCOLN airs Wednesday, February 11 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT21.1, cable1011, cable 11)
Forgotten Ellis Island FORGOTTEN ELLIS ISLAND brings the lost history of Ellis Island Hospital to life—and reminds viewers how America became the diverse nation it is today. For more than five decades, the 22 brick buildings that once housed Ellis Island Hospital were abandoned, left to ruin. A tree had sprouted through the linoleum floor outside one of the hospital’s four operating rooms. Vines of ivy grew through cracks in the windows lining the 500-foot-long hallway that connected the many hospital wards, autopsy amphitheatre and kitchens. Lost were the stories of the immigrant patients who lay in beds with a view of the Statue of Liberty, remembered only by the generation PHOTO: U.S. NATIONAL ARCHIVES that had lived them. FORGOTTEN ELLIS ISLAND airs Monday, February 2 at 10 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD (DT21.1, cable1011, cable 11)

Hey You GUUUYYYYYSS! It’s back! Sesame Workshop’s classic series, The Electric Company, steps out of the ‘70s and explores reading with a new generation of kids. With healthy doses of comedy, hiphop music, and out of this world entertainment, The Electric Company is designed to combat the literacy crisis facing America’s second graders, and is re-energized to recognize the media-driven generation of today. The show is brought to life with a 15-minute narrative storyline that is interspersed with segments that include curricular clusters of music videos, sketch comedy, animation and short films. The cast of characters of The Electric Company is a group of do-gooders who keep the neighborhood safe with their literacy superpowers and solve problems often created by a group of troublemakers called “The Pranksters.” Stationed from their home base, The Electric Diner, the team consists of four core cast members. Teaching letter sounds and words through a series of short films that occur within each episode is vocal percussionist, Chris Sullivan, who plays “Shock,” an Electric Company member who works in the diner and provides the beat as the Company carries out its missions. Season one of the new The Electric Company features comedy segments with Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg, kid comedian and actor Kyle Massey, former NFL superstar and Today Show correspondent Tiki Barber, rapper Common and 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer; music videos with Grammy Award winning musician Wyclef Jean and hip-hop superstar Sean Kingston. THE ELECTRIC COMPANY airs Mondays at 4:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD

THE DEMOS > FEBRUARY 5 With a gift for melody, simple yet poignant songs, sweet harmonies, and a guitar sound that is as much today as it is the ‘60s, the Demos is one of the best pop bands playing today. Their music is simplified to the point that works whether strummed electrically or acoustically. CHESTERFIELD KINGS > FEBRUARY 12 During the late 70s and early 80s, while most bands were trying to ride the New Wave, Rochester’s own Chesterfield Kings set their own course into the past... destination 1966. Pioneers of the garage rock revival, the band continues to raise the bar on the reborn scene. BUDDHAHOOD > FEBRUARY 19 The band’s several vocalists join a full horn section, steel drums, bass, drums, and guitar to create tunes that are as uplifting spiritually and emotionally as they are physically. JOE BEARD & THE JOHN COLE BLUES BAND > FEBRUARY 26 Rochester’s celebrated blues artists Joe Beard and The John Cole Blues Band hit the stage for a very special OnStage. As each are musical legends in their own right, they came together for a remarkable performance.

THE PROMISED LAND: Different Takes on the Legacy of Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King had a dream. “I’ve seen the promised land,” he said. “I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.” It’s more that four decades since he spoke those words — words that still ring in our ears, especially as we celebrate what would have been Dr. King’s 80th birthday. During a one-hour special, The Promised Land: Different Takes on the Legacy of Martin Luther King, activist, environmentalist, humanitarian Majora Carter gauges the reach of King’s influence. How far have we come? What has been the impact on our kids, and our communities? THE PROMISED LAND: Different Takes on the Legacy of Martin Luther King airs Saturday, February 7 at 3 p.m. on AM1370/HD91.5-2

AM highlights LADY WRITES THE BLUES: The Rose Marie McCoy Story Born in 1922, Rose Marie McCoy grew up in a tin shack in rural Arkansas. By the 1960s, she had become one of the most prolific songwriters of her generation. Her songs have been recorded by Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Dizzy Gillespie, Ike & Tina Turner, Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, James Brown, Bette Midler, Sarah Vaughn, Johnny Mathis and Aretha Franklin. Her success was even more remarkable since she worked in an era when blacks and women were largely excluded from the business side of the music industry. But despite publishing over 850 songs, McCoy remains largely unknown. Hosted by singer-songwriter Maxine Brown, “Lady Writes the Blues: The Rose Marie McCoy Story” shines a long overdue spotlight on McCoy, who wrote her first song, “After All,” in 1942. LADY WRITES THE BLUES: The Rose Marie McCoy Story airs Saturday, February 14 at 3 p.m. on AM1370/HD91.5-2
