Healthy You
My Source for community health information
WXXI’s health initiative, Healthy You, leverages technology, community partnerships and programming to help make Rochester a healthier community. WXXI is committed to the serious issue of child obesity and wellness. The Healthy You initiative includes television and online segments on nutrition, fitness and heart health. It also includes direct outreach to child care providers. Working together, we are helping to keep our communities healthy by teaching healthy behaviors. The initiative – in partnership with WSKG/Binghamton – is funded in part by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. To find out more, visit: WXXI.org/healthyyou

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials American Radio Works “Testing Teachers” airs Sunday, October 3 at 10 p.m. Kids need good teachers. It’s something people know in their gut, but it’s only recently that researchers have begun developing ways to measure the quality of teachers. What they’re learning is shaking up schools and leading education reformers to call for radical changes in the way teachers are trained and evaluated – and the way they are hired and fired, too. State of Re:Union “Española” airs Sunday, October 10 at 10 p.m. State of the Re:Union travels to the Española Valley of Northern New Mexico, the first Capitol City in America, to explore the area’s history of dispossession, and to discover what the rest of the country can learn from this still vital region of the American Southwest. State of Re:Union “Twin Cities, Minnesota” airs Sunday, October 17 at 10 p.m. It isn’t exactly Lake Wobegon anymore. Once known as the home of Midwestern Lutherans and Scandanavian farmers, the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are now wildly diverse.
The Capitol Steps: Politics Takes a Holiday airs Friday, October 29 at 1 p.m. & 11 p.m. If the Nation’s political climate doesn’t scare you this Halloween, you haven’t been paying attention! But it’s nice to know you can laugh at your fears. So put down your torch and pitchfork this Halloween and join the Capitol Steps as we skewer everything left, right and wrong with the country today! The Horror of it All airs Friday, October 29 at 1:30 p.m. & 11:30 p.m. Why do people get so much pleasure from movies that frighten them out of their wits? Expert Stephen Prince says horror films allow us to explore the anxieties of our times along with questions about human nature, all from the safety of a darkened movie theatre. Also, science fiction writer John Rosenman says the genre has come a long way since the early days of Buck Rogers.
