PUBLIC TELEVISION & PUBLIC RADIO FOR ROCHESTER
WXXI captures the making of the 2011 Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Big Shot and shares stories from past years of this photography project. Shot in high definition, the film documents the history of this annual nighttime photography project. The 26th Big Shot took place at the National Museum of Play at The Strong. Photographed on the evening of May 5, 2011, more than 1,000 volunteers convened at the museum and used flash lights to “paint the building with light” as photographers from RIT’s School of Photographic Arts & Sciences captured the scene using an open shutter and the dramatic technique of timed exposure. Using archival footage from a variety of sources, the film also tells the stories of several past Big Shots including the inaugural shoot at Highland Hospital. The RIT Big Shot: Painting with Light premieres Thursday, September 8 at 8:00 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD. Repeats at 10:00 p.m. (For more information on this WXXI production, please visit: wxxi.org/bigshot) Photo credit: 9/12 20 Toe Photo Executive Staff Norm Silverstein, President & CEO Susan Rogers, Executive Vice President & General Manager Jeanne E. 1370 Forum & AM 1370 Specials Mind the Gap: Why Good Schools are Failing Black Students airs Sunday, September 4 at 10 p.m. Award-winning NPR Reporter Nancy Solomon takes you inside a school to hear a discussion on race in the classroom. Listen as students try to explain what went wrong with their education. Join her at the kitchen table with black middleclass parents who thought that a move to the suburbs would ensure school success. Find out how the school’s best teachers motivate their students. Dream Jobs: Outside the Cubicle airs Monday, September 5 at 12 p.m. & 10 p.m. Listeners will hear the stories of three very determined people who struggled to find the career path outside conventional workplaces. We’ll meet: Loredana Bessone who couldn’t afford the program and college she wanted and settled on a school close to her home in Italy. Her major, informatics, gave her a range of skills that would eventually equip her to train astronauts in robotics, engineering, software, and behavioral skills. Amir Abo-Shaeer who made a radical move, quitting a dreary position at a telephone-products company, a job he said was sucking his soul dry. Determined to teach technology to
high school students, Abo-Shaeer pioneered a four-year engineering academy in California, and has won a McArthur “genius” grant for his creative approach to teaching. Lucie Pautet, who, as a teenager growing up in France, wanted to become a rocket scientist but wasn’t accepted into aerospace school. Instead she studied underwater acoustics which launched her into a career as a cable-laying technician and coastal waters scientist. Fired: Tales of Jobs Gone Bad airs Monday, September 5 at 1 p.m. & 10 p.m. Most of us who earn a living have at one time or another have been fired, let go, downsized, outsourced, canned. Just ask actress and commentator Annabelle Gurwitch. Shortly after landing a part in a play directed by her idol, Woody Allen, she was fired because of so-called “creative differences” between her and the director. Gurwitch channeled her disbelief and bitterness into creating this show.
