Ken Burns’s seven-part documentary weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The series follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. The Roosevelts: An Intimate History airs Sunday, September 14 through Saturday, September 20 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV

Dear Friends, This month marks the premiere of the much-anticipated documentary series on the Roosevelts by Ken Burns, America’s most acclaimed filmmaker. The seven-part documentary, The Roosevelts: An Norm Silverstein Intimate History (Sunday, September 14 through Saturday, September 20, at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV), marks the first time the stories of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor have been woven into a single narrative. The series encompasses all the history the Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of National Parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home, and human rights around the world, in which Eleanor Roosevelt played a central role. It is also the human story about love and betrayal, family feeling and personal courage, and the conquest of fear. I hope you’ll be able to join us for this intimate portrait of the Roosevelts. Also in September, Connections with Evan Dawson, heard weekdays from 12 to 2 p.m. on AM 1370, will also be broadcast on WRUR-FM 88.5. Thanks to our partnership with the University of Rochester, we are able to offer this live two-hour talk show, which covers a vast array of topics: education, agriculture, art, politics, and health, on the FM dial (You can also hear Connections on WEOS-FM Geneva through our partnership with Hobart and William Smith Colleges). If you haven’t heard Connections, I encourage you to do so and to take part in the conversation. Connections with Evan Dawson will air on WRUR-FM beginning September 8. The Little Theatre is pleased to be part of the Fringe Festival again this year. As an official venue, The Little will present poetry performances, music, films, and other special events on specially selected nights between September 18 - 27. To learn more about the complete line-up for the festival and specific acts at The Little, visit rochesterfringe.com. Finally, be sure to mark your calendar for our Open House on Saturday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join us at our studios at 280 State Street for a behind-the-scenes look at how our programs are created and meet the people that make it happen. We will have arts and crafts for the kids, countless PBS Kids characters (including Daniel Tiger and the Berenstain Bears) looking to have their pictures taken, live broadcasts, and all of our studios will be open and lit for you to come visit! You can also meet our on-air hosts and news team, talk with our TV program director, and learn how The Little selects movies. It will be a fun, FREE day, and I look forward to seeing you there! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI
NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A with a WXXI underwriter Established in 1932 and owned by the Buerkle family for 54 years, The Rug Market is Rochester and Monroe County’s oldest floor covering store. Owner Dan Buerkle, who thought his high school job working for his Dad would be temporary, proudly explains the family business in Irondequoit. Q. What has been the most important business practice for a retail operation with the longevity of The Rug Market? The Rug Market has a motto to do the right thing. If it is not right, fix it. Q: What would you like the WXXI audience to know about The Rug Market? We try to help our customers with their purchase so they are happy with their choice. If we do the installation, we do a great job. Our customers are our friends and are very important to us. Q. What distinguishes The Rug Market from other retail floor covering stores in the Rochester area? We feel we have created a warm, friendly environment. We have a knowledgeable staff trained to help you make the correct choice. If we do not have the answer, we will get back to you. You will find all kinds of floor coverings, including more than 800 area rugs and vinyl flooring, as well as ceramic window coverings, lamps, and lighting. We also encourage customers to take home and try any rug or flooring sample to visualize it in their home. Q. Any funny or memorable customer service calls or requests to share? We have had unusual requests from our customers and we try to do what we can. Once we provided a 20- or 30-foot long carpet in the shape of a dragon tongue! www.therugmarketny.com owner Dan Buerkle

Joy N. Parker
, station relations and web coordinator for WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, New York, died July 12 after a courageous battle against ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). She was 43. Parker joined WXXI in June 1996 as a TV operations technician and quickly moved up the ranks to segment producer for several WXXI series including Need to Know, Assignment: The World, and 60 Second Science. She also served as associate producer on WXXI’s Crucible of Freedom, a companion piece to the national documentary Not For Ourselves Alone by Ken Burns that aired statewide. In June 2002 Parker was promoted to stations relations and web coordinator. She served as station liaison for Homework Hotline, WXXI’s statewide live call-in show where kids get help with homework problems right on the air. As web coordinator she provided daily maintenance of WXXI’s website, managed content for various WXXI eNewsletters, and used various platforms of social media to reach potential members. She was affectionately known as the “social media maven.” Parker was diagnosed with ALS in April 2010. When the disease progressed, she began working from home and remained vital to WXXI and her department until the day she died. She also helped to raise thousands of dollars for the Greater Rochester Muscular Dystrophy Association and The ALS Association Upstate Chapter. In December 2013 Parker submitted a personal video piece to Art for Freedom, part of Ray of Light Foundation. It was chosen by Madonna and celebrity curator, David Blaine, and Parker was awarded a $10,000 grant for her submission. She donated the money to MDA Rochester and the ALS Association. “Although we are deeply saddened by her passing, we will remember Joy for her love of life and family, for her passion for her work, and for the example she set in fighting this devastating disease,” said Norm Silverstein, President of WXXI. Parker was also a photographer and artist for more than 30 years. Her photography has been exhibited at several galleries and festivals throughout upstate New York. An avid blogger, she maintained her own website simplejoysonline.net where she shared her photography and her personal story living with ALS. Parker is survived by her husband Mike Champlin and daughters Katherine (18) and Nicole (9).

Ken Rudin
the political junkie is back Ken Rudin returns to the airwaves with the same focus and enthusiasm listeners loved on NPR’s Talk of the Nation and It’s All Politics. Now, with Ken in the host chair, he brings his decades of experience, encyclopedic mind, and famous wit to present politics in an informative, nonpartisan, and entertaining way. Each week, Ken looks back on noteworthy moments in our country’s political history, and talks to the key players who were there about how those events impact our national politics today. The show also includes a ScuttleButton and Trivia segment, where Ken continues his beloved weekly trivia question and ScuttleButton puzzles that were a staple during his appearances on Talk of the Nation. You’ll be challenged to showcase your political knowledge and wit by answering Ken’s political trivia questions and solving Ken’s ScuttleButton puzzles. Hundreds of listeners participate in these contests in the hopes of being randomly picked to win a coveted Political Junkie button. THE POLITICAL JUNKIE AIRS FRIDAYS AT 8 PM ON AM 1370

AM 1370 Specials AMERICAN Radio Works “The Science of Smart” i september 7 at 9pm
IQ2US: Should We Embrace The Common Core? i september 21 at 9pm
In recent decades, experts working in cognitive science, psychology, and neuroscience have opened new windows into how the brain works, and how we can learn to learn better. In this program, we look at some of the big ideas coming out of brain science and meet the researchers who are unlocking the secrets of how the brain acquires and holds on to knowledge.
Adopted by more than 40 states, Common Core was developed, in part, to address concerns that American students were falling behind their foreign counterparts and graduating high school without the necessary skills for college and the workforce. But is this the reform we’ve been looking for? Has the federal government overreached our schools with standards that have been flawed from the start? Or will the Common Core raise the bar and improve the quality of our children’s education?
american radio works “Greater Expectations: The Challenge of the Common Core” i sunday, september 14 at 9 pm
There’s plenty of controversy surrounding the Common Core, a new set of education standards adopted by most states. Getting less attention is what the standards actually say, and the fact that many teachers like them. This documentary takes listeners into classrooms to explore how the standards are changing teaching and learning.
AMERICAN Radio Works “The new face of college” i september 28 at 9pm
The 21st Century college student is likely to be older than traditional students. She’s more likely to be female, working and Hispanic or African-American. She’s more likely to be a mom. She’s less likely to attend college full time or finish in four years. This documentary explores how universities are adapting to their new students.

Violinists David Brickman and Patricia Sunwoo, violist Melissa Matson, and cellists Mimi Hwang make up the Amenda Quartet. Formed in January, 2010, the Amenda Quartet was founded by Sunwoo, who had long entertained the notion of performing a “Beethoven cycle”, that is, performing all 16 of Beethoven’s string quartets in a series of concerts. The Beethoven quartets are revered by musicians and loved by audiences. Spanning the master’s creative life, within them one finds expressed the spectrum of human experience - joy and anger, jocularity and gravity, despair and exaltation. It was with little difficulty that Sunwoo enlisted three colleagues to undertake the project, which might be considered the “Mount Everest” of the chamber music repertoire.

wxxi&LITTLE NATIONAL
THEATRE
LIVE:
The film takes the audience on an extraordinary journey through the groundbreaking David Bowie Is exhibition created by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A). With special guests including legendary Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, and other collaborators, David Bowie Is explores the stories behind some of the key objects that document Bowie’s artistic career.
DAVID BOWIE COMES TO THE LITTLE What do the objects from a person’s life tell you about that person? What if that person is David Bowie? On Tuesday, September 23, cinemas across the country will answer that question with a special one-day screening of David Bowie Is. The Little will join this national movement with their own 7:00 p.m. screening.
MEDEA Terrible things breed in broken hearts.
Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she’s left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day’s grace. It’s time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds dear. On Sunday, September 28 at 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 30 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is proud to present the National Theatre Live production of Medea. Helen McCrory (The Last of the Haussmans) takes the title role in Euripides’ powerful tragedy, in a new version by Ben Power, directed by Carrie Cracknell, with music written by Will Gregory and Alison Goldfrapp. For those not familiar with NT Live, it’s really something to see. Actual theatre performances with the best actors and directors in London are recorded with cameras carefully positioned throughout the auditorium, ensuring that Little audiences get the best seat in the house for each production. Where these cameras are placed varies for each show, to make sure audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time. Tickets for the show are $15 for Little members, students, and seniors, and $20 for general public.
The exhibition curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, provide fascinating insight into the most memorable music videos and original costumes, as well as more personal items such as never-before-seen handwritten lyrics, album cover artwork, set designs and diary entries, which reveal the creativity and evolution of Bowie’s ideas. The documentary was filmed on the closing night of the V&A exhibition in London and directed by Hamish Hamilton, the BAFTA-winning director of the Academy Awards and the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Tickets for this event will be $14 general admission and $12 for members, seniors, and students with identification.
When pills and therapies can’t fan humanity’s spark within us, sometimes music can. On Tuesday, September 9 at 7:00, The Little will screen Alive Inside as part of its monthly One Take: Stories Through the Lens documentary series. This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. An uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, Alive Inside’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. After the film, the audience will have the privilege of discussing it with special guest Al Power, who is in the film and very closely involved with Cohen’s Music & Memory project. Mr. Power is also a musician, former Eastman Jazz student, and a singer.
