NEWS&EVENTS Join WXXI on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. at The Harley School’s Wilson Arts Center for a special celebration of German-American composer Kurt Weill’s work. Michael Lasser, Cindy Miller, and Alan Jones come together several times each year to perform the songs of major American songwriters, among them Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, and Cole Porter. To that list, they now add this distinctive composer who worked with a remarkable group of lyricists— from Ira Gershwin and Alan Jay Lerner to African-American poet SUNDAY, APRIL 7 AT 2 P.M. | THE HARLEY SCHOOL Langston Hughes and playwright Maxwell Anderson. The timing of the performance anticipates the 15th annual Lotte Lenya Competition and the deepening awareness in Rochester of Kurt Weill’s music for the theater. Tickets are $25 and can be ordered online at WXXI.org/events, or by calling (585) 258-0200. This performance is part of a special community celebration of Kurt Weill and his work, and is funded in part by the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc.

BILLY KELLY IN CONCERT SUNDAY, APRIL 14 DOORS OPEN AT 10 A.M. THE LITTLE THEATRE

If your little ones are avid PBS Kids viewers then chances are they’ve seen I’m Thinking of an Animal with Billy Kelly segments on WXXITV/HD. Produced by singer/songwriter Billy Kelly, the segments borrow from the popular car-ride kids’ game of the same name. Billy Kelly sings clues about an animal he is thinking of, and supports his clues with animation, and performances by a professional dance troupe. Now WXXI is proud to bring Billy Kelly to Rochester for a special performance on Sunday, April 14 at the Little Theatre (240 East Avenue). The doors open at 10 a.m. and the concert starts at 11 a.m. WXXI Kids Club Members receive four free tickets. For general admission —tickets are: $25 for a family fourpack, $7 for additional kids tickets, $10 for additional adult tickets. To order your tickets online, visit WXXI.org/events or call (585) 2582000. Tickets may also be purchased the day of the show at the Little Theatre Box Office starting at 10 a.m.

SUNDAY, APRIL 7 AT 10:15 P.M. ON WXXI-TV/HD

In the face of horrific living conditions, starvation, and the threat of deportation to Auschwitz, the Jewish inmates of Terezin concentration camp — artists, musicians, poets, and writers — fought back… with art and music. Led by conductor Raphael Schachter, they re-imagined a Catholic liturgical work, Verdi’s Requiem, as a condemnation of the Nazis. Ultimately, they performed for Nazi brass, singing what they dared not say. Six decades later, conductor Murry Sidlin and a new choir take Verdi’s Requiem back to Terezin and bring the story of Raphael Schachter’s artistic uprising back to life.

ORCHESTRA OF EXILES SUNDAY, APRIL 14 AT 10 P.M. ON WXXI-TV/HD

Featuring Itzhak Perlman, Zubin Mehta, Pinchas Zukerman, Joshua Bell and others, Orchestra of Exiles is the suspenseful chronicle of how one man helped save Europe’s premiere Jewish musicians from obliteration by the Nazis during WWII. In the early 1930s Hitler began firing Jewish musicians across Europe. Overcoming extraordinary obstacles, violinist Bronislaw Huberman moved these great musicians to Palestine and formed a symphony that would become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. With courage, resourcefulness, and an entourage of allies including Arturo Toscanini and Albert Einstein, Huberman saved close to 1,000 Jews - along with the musical heritage of Europe.

THREE-PART HEALTH-FOCUSED SERIES WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3-17 AT 10 P.M. ON WXXI-TV/HD

THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE TUESDAY, APRIL 16 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV/HD

The Central Park Five examines the 1989 case of five Black and Latino teenagers who were convicted of raping a White woman in Central Park. After having spent between 6 and 13 years each in prison, a serial rapist confessed to the crime. Based on Sarah Burns’ best-selling book and codirected by her husband David McMahon and her father Ken Burns, this incendiary film traces the riveting tale of innocent young men scapegoated for a heinous crime, and serves as a mirror for our times. An encore presentation will air Saturday, April 20 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 21 at 11 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD.

British author, journalist, and popular TV personality Dr. Michael Mosley sets out to conduct experiments on himself to improve his health and discovers how the human body works. With cameras in tow for the series, Mosley traveled across the U.S. to collaborate with researchers doing extraordinary work in a variety of health-related fields. Episodes include: Eat, Fast and Live Longer (4/3), The Truth About Exercise (4/10), and Guts (4/17). “I have always been interested in selfexperimentation as a research device because so many of the most important discoveries came from scientists and doctors who used themselves as test subjects,” Mosley says, “but I had never before performed a series of trials on my own health.” PHOTO: COURTESY OF ROSHAN SAMARASINGHE

KIND HEARTED WOMAN

MONDAY, APRIL 1 & TUESDAY, APRIL 2 AT 9 P.M. ON WXXI-TV/HD In a special two-part series, acclaimed filmmaker David Sutherland (“The Farmer’s Wife,” “Country Boys”) creates an unforgettable portrait of Robin Charboneau, a 32-year-old divorced single mother and Oglala Sioux woman living on North Dakota’s Spirit Lake Reservation. THE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE SUNDAYS AT 10 P.M., APRIL 21-MAY 5 ON WXXI-TV/HD

The Bletchley Circle follows four ordinary women with the extraordinary ability to break codes, a skill honed during World War II when they worked undercover at Bletchley Park, site of the United Kingdom’s main decryption establishment. Now in 1952, Susan, Millie, Lucy and Jean have returned to civilian life, keeping their intelligence work secret from all, including family and friends. A series of ghastly murders targeting women, however, re-unites the team as they set out to decode the pattern behind the crimes. Credit: Courtesy of ©Laurence Cendrowicz/World Productions

TED RADIO HOUR AM 1370 is pleased to add TED Radio Hour to the schedule. Based on riveting TEDTalks from the world’s most remarkable minds, this weekly radio series takes you on a journey through fascinating ideas, astonishing inventions, and new ways to think and create. Each episode includes riveting excerpts from the renowned TED stage where some of the world’s deepest thinkers and innovators are invited to give the 18-minute “talk of their lives.” The TED Radio Hour team takes the most compelling talks and organizes them around a common theme. But we don’t stop with the TEDTalks. Host Guy Raz interviews the guests, delving deeper, dissecting the speaker’s ideas and posing probing questions you’d like to hear answered.

TED RADIO HOUR airs Saturdays at 3 p.m., beginning April 6th on AM 1370

1370 Forums & AM 1370 Specials Grit, Luck and Money: Preparing Kids for College and Getting Them Through airs Sunday, April 7 at 9 p.m. More people are attending college than ever before, but many aren’t finishing. Among low-income students, only nine percent complete a bachelor’s degree by age 24. Why are so many students quitting college? What leads a few to beat the odds? American Radio Works’ Emily Hanford interviews young people trying to enter the ranks of the middle class, teachers trying to increase their chances, and researchers investigating the nature of persistence. Humankind Special: Diet Climate Part One airs Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. Humankind explores a new movement on hundreds of college campuses for more “sustainable dining” as well as healthier food choices and examines important changes at public school cafeterias under landmark new USDA rules to assure more nutritious school meals.

Humankind Special: Diet Climate Part Two airs Sunday, April 21 at 9 p.m. A top public health expert explains the global warming impact of our personal food choices, while Humankind goes grocery-shopping with a prominent physician who highlights healthy foods that are also climate-friendly. Then, a visit to the White House vegetable garden and community gardens in Nevada and California, where citizens come together to cultivate both healthy food and a more cohesive local community. Intelligence Squared US: The GOP: Seize the Center or Die?” airs Sunday, April 28 at 9 p.m. The GOP’s 2012 election season was disappointing to many in the party. Would a shift to the center help the GOP survive? Was embracing the Tea Party a mistake? Or, does the party simply need a new election strategy? Intelligence Squared U.S. invites leading strategists to debate the future of the party.

The Latin Alternative Student Programming

WRUR is a partnership of the University of Rochester and WXXI Public Broadcasting

SUNDAYS AT 9 P.M. ON WRUR-FM For over 30 years, legendary pianist Marian McPartland has welcomed a stellar line-up of jazz artists for conversation and improvisation on her Peabody Award-winning program. Piano Jazz fans say the show’s intimate style is “like listening in on a conversation in someone’s living room.” And no one but McPartland, with her engaging personality and improvisational savvy, could host such a variety of performers in her radio “living room.” Piano Jazz is a forum for jazz legends and influential performers as well as up-and-coming talents. Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Diana Krall, Max Roach, Cassandra Wilson and Tony Bennett are among the over 400 guests who have joined McPartland to create dynamic duets and discuss their lives and music.

APRIL IS

PUBLIC RADIO MUSIC MONTH Did you know that on the whole, local public radio stations air nearly 5 million hours of music per year, the majority of which is locally programmed. That’s millions of hours of eclectic music from tastemakers; access and insights to the world’s best artists; conversations with legends, and chances to discover emerging talent; troves of new music and multiple genres; a free front-row seat to an original live performance. You can hear all this on Classical 91.5 and WRUR-FM 88.5. Throughout April, PUBLIC RADIO MUSIC MONTH celebrates the essential role public radio stations play in championing and preserving a diverse array of musicians and music styles for millions of listeners. In this nationwide initiative, WXXI, along with local musicians, community leaders, and fans will share why public radio is important, and these testimonials will air throughout April on WXXI radio.

WXXI&LITTLE

A PLACE AT THE TABLE PART OF THE LITTLE’S ONE TAKE DOC SERIES TUESDAY, APRIL 9 AT 7P.M.

50 million people in the U.S.-one in four children-don’t know where their next meal is coming from, despite our having the means to provide nutritious, affordable food for all Americans. Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through the lens of three people who are struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi secondgrader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford. Their stories are interwoven with insights from experts including sociologist Janet Poppendieck, author Raj Patel and nutrition policy leader Marion Nestle; ordinary citizens like Pastor Bob Wilson and teachers Leslie Nichols and Odessa Cherry; and activists such as Witness to Hunger’s Mariana Chilton, Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio and Oscar®-winning actor Jeff Bridges. One Take: Stories through the Lens is a monthly Tuesday night documentary series held at the Little Theatre, hosted by Linda Moroney. The series presents a unique mix of documentaries— ranging from film festival favorites to unheralded gems— followed by talkback discussions. This program is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. JEFF BRIDGES PHOTO: MAGNOLIA PICTURES

ESMERALDA

SUNDAY APRIL 21 AT 12 P.M. AND TUESDAY, APRIL 23 AT 6:30 P.M. AT THE LITTLE TICKETS ON SALE NOW In this sprawling pageant, based on Victor Hugo’s novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” ballerina Maria Alexandrova portrays Esmeralda, a kind-hearted gypsy who runs afoul of a corrupt Archdeacon in medieval Paris. The current production reconstructs choreographer Marius Petipa’s 1899 staging of the 1844 original, with some “amplifications.” Even given the twist of a happy ending (Hugo’s heroine dies on the scaffold, as she does in Vladimir Bourmeister’s 1950 ballet version), “La Esmeralda” retains its pathos. Disparities of wealth and class often victimize the heroines of melodrama, but few seem as helpless as Esmeralda, a white moth fluttering gaily amid the walls of a system ready to crush her $18 Seniors, Students, and Members I $20 General Admission Sure we have great movies, but we also have great art, music and food in our café. ISLAND PRESIDENT A WXXI COMMUNITY CINEMA PRESENTATION MONDAY, APRIL 29 AT 7 P.M. AT THE LITTLE

Jon Shenk’s The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced— the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable. Please note: On February 7, 2012 Nasheed resigned the presidency under the threat of violence in a coup d’etat perpetrated by security forces loyal to the former dictator. This film is the story of his first year in office. A panel discussion will follow the screening. Community Cinema screenings are free and open to the public.

SPOTLIGHT ON A WXXI BUSINESS PARTNER

“We are a small locally owned and operated company that is passionate about the community we live and work in, the products we handcraft, and customer service.” John Urlaub, Owner

For more than 20 years THE ROHRBACH BREWING COMPANY has been serving the Rochester community. Rohrbach’s Brewpub on Buffalo Road is just nine miles west of downtown Rochester, and its newest facility, Rohrbach’s Railroad Street Brewery, is located in Rochester’s historic public market district. Owner John Urlaub offered this description of Rohrbach’s: “We are a small locally owned and operated company that is passionate about the community we live and work in, the products we handcraft, and customer service. We have loved creating, consuming, educating, and celebrating craft beer in Rochester since 1992 – way before craft beer was cool. As part of this effort Rohrbach’s hosted the first brewers’ fest in the area more than 18 years ago. We still host the premier summer celebration of American craft beer – the Flour City Brewers’ Fest. By partnering with other great local companies, the event provides an opportunity to bring great craft beer to the local community.” When asked about Rohrbach’s business partnership with WXXI, Urlaub explained, “I personally love the service that WXXI provides to the community and the commitment to the Rochester area. I wanted to support WXXI programming while also reaching out to like-minded people who appreciate high-quality, locally-crafted products.” Urlaub is most proud of providing support for WXXI’s music programming, specifically the local and syndicated music shows on WRUR-FM 88.5. “They are incredible and very unique in our area. Open Tunings, hosted by Scott Regan, is the best!” Through monthly dinner and beer pairing and brewtopia events, Rohrbach Brewpub is passionate about educating and celebrating craft beer and food. The new Railroad Street Brewery location offers a tasting room for sampling. For more information, visit www.rohrbachs.com
