Les Misérables

25th Anniversary Concert at the 02 Saturday, December 15 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD

No one could have guessed on October 8, 1985, when Les Misérables opened in London at the Barbican Theatre, that it would become a worldwide phenomenon. In 2010, the legendary musical celebrated its 25th birthday, and to mark the occasion, producer Cameron Mackintosh staged an extraordinary concert at the O2 Arena in London. With more than 500 actors and musicians — including Alfie Boe, Jenny Galloway, Katie Hall, Nick Jonas, Norm Lewis, Matt Lucas, Lea Salonga, and Colm Wilkinson – Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert at the 02 – includes the October 2010 cast of the long-running Original Production at London’s Queen’s Theatre and members of the original 1985 London cast. During the broadcast you’ll learn more about the production coming to the Auditorium Theatre in May 2013 and how you can get presale tickets to the show.

Dear Friends, If you’re an avid AM 1370 or WRUR-FM 88.5 listener, then you’ve heard a new voice in the mornings and a familiar favorite in the afternoons. Beth Adams is back on the air and this time she’s on your public radio station! On November 26th the award winning journalist became local host of Norm Silverstein NPR’s Morning Edition, while veteran radio host Alex Crichton took the wheel for afternoon drive time during All Things Considered. Hélène Biandudi, former local host of All Things Considered, will now be dedicated to full-time reporting with a focus on education. She’ll also increase her role as a contributor to WXXI-TV’s Need to Know Rochester. WXXI is the trusted source of quality public affairs programming for Rochester and the Finger Lakes region and these changes strengthen our commitment. Beth has been part of Rochester’s radio landscape for more than 20 years and is best known as former co-host of WHAM 1180’s morning news show. She’s a great addition to our news team, which already boasts a dedicated group of journalists focused on in-depth reporting on issues that concern our community and state. She’s excited to be back on radio and we are happy to have her as part of WXXI. And, now you can catch the quick wit, solid reporting, and dry sense of humor of Alex Crichton weekdays starting at 4 p.m. Alex joined WXXI in 1984 and has covered sports, produced news and music programs, hosted a jazz show, produced live remotes, interviewed an array of people from musicians to politicians. He hosted Morning Edition for 15 years. As I look at these exciting changes and reflect on the work WXXI has accomplished over the past twelve months I would have to say December marks the end of a great year for WXXI. Our news department has covered issues that are important to you: elections, the economy and technology in upstate New York, education and the arts. We produced documentaries and series that spotlight Rochester and all it has to offer – including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next Hundred Years, The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, and Garth & Wynton: The Project. We’ve supplied teachers and parents with tools to aid them in the instruction of our children, and supported students and their studies with Homework Hotline and Assignment: The World. We filled the airwaves with beautiful music, plenty of which was local to Rochester, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra series, Live from Hochstein, and Backstage Pass. This year also marked our long-term formal affiliation with the Little Theatre, which brought a new promise for us to not only serve the community on-air and online, but also on screen. And we kept that promise by bringing you films that were entertaining, enlightening and inspiring, many of which were followed by panel discussions that continued conversations beyond the screening. These examples represent a small portion of what we have been able to accomplish with your support over the past year. As we look forward to 2013, we have aspiring plans for more programs and events to help better serve our community. Your end-of-year gift will represent a significant investment in those new and on-going efforts. I hope we can count on your support now and in the upcoming year. On behalf of WXXI and the Little, we wish you a happy, healthy holiday season and a wonderful New Year. Sincerely,

Norm Silverstein, WXXI President norms@wxxi.org

NEWS&EVENTS

Exciting Changes for wxxi news Beth Adams is best known as the former co-host of WHAM 1180’s morning news show with Chet Walker; she spent over 23 years at WHAM 1180. She has broadcast from the White House, two Olympic Games, and the Buffalo Bills’ first trip to the Super Bowl in 1991. She also served as News Anchor for WIOD in Miami, Florida, and News Director for WELM/WLVY in Elmira, New York. Adams is the recipient of an award from the Associated Press New York State Broadcaster’s Association for best spot news coverage and from the New York State Humane Society for media advocacy. She is former Executive Board Member of the Rochester Press Radio Club, and a member of the Rochester Broadway Theater League Education Committee.

Veteran radio journalist Beth Adams joined WXXI News in late November, a move designed to strengthen WXXI’s award-winning news coverage. Adams is now the new local host of NPR’s Morning Edition while Alex Crichton made the move to afternoon drive time – as new local host of NPR’s All Things Considered. Hélène Biandudi, who was All Things Considered host, is now a full-time reporter, and contributor to WXXI-TV’s Need to Know Rochester. Biandudi will continue her focus on education reporting.

Alex Crichton joined WXXI in 1984 as a jazz announcer when AM 1370 was a news/jazz/public affairs format. Since then he has covered sports, produced news and music programs, hosted a jazz show, produced live remotes, interviewed an array of people from musicians to politicians, and produced newscasts for All Things Considered. He has been local host of Morning Edition since 1997. Hélène Biandudi joined WXXI in October 2010 as AM 1370 afternoon host and reporter. She has also produced special segments for WXXI-TV’s Need to Know Rochester. Prior to joining WXXI, Biandudi worked for 48 Hours at CBS as the executive and editorial assistant to the show’s executive producer, Susan Zirinsky.

“We’re proud to welcome Beth Adams as the newest member of the WXXI family,” said WXXI President Norm Silverstein. “She will be a great addition to our news department.”

In celebration of the 2012 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, the Little Theatre and WXXI hosted a Jazz Free-For-All throughout the nine-day festival, which included free jazz films, live music, a special kids’ day and more. It was a popular spot, and as a result the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival has made the Little an official venue for the 2013 festival. With the addition of the Little, the festival now has 12 club venues.

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials Intelligence Squared “Does Science Refute God?” airs Sunday, December 16 at 9 p.m. On the fundamental question--evolution or creation?--Americans are on the fence. According to one survey, while 61% of Americans believe we have evolved over time, 22% believe this evolution was guided by a higher power, with another 31% on the side of creationism. For some, modern science debunks many of religion’s core beliefs, but for others, questions like “Why are we here?” and “How did it all come about?” can only be answered through a belief in the existence of God. Can science and religion co-exist? Hearing Voices, A Christmas Special airs Sunday, December 23 at 9 p.m. A mix of holiday stories, found-sound, and sampled songs: A bell-ringer at the Mall of America. Holiday history as told by second graders. A trip to the toy store. Carols sung

by Zulu children in a South African orphanage. And holiday bits from Bing Crosby, George W. Bush, and The Beatles Fan Club Christmas messages. Repeats 12/24 at 12 pm. Capitol Steps: Politics Takes a Holiday New Year’s Edition 2012 airs Sunday, December 30 at 9 p.m. Help us roast 2012 to a crisp with The Capitol Steps and their annual year-in-review awards ceremony called “Politics Takes a Holiday!” This year will feature all new awards, such as: “Best Use of $3 billion Dollars to Run for President,” “Worst Place in Public to Admit You Had a Binder Full of Women,”and “Worst Hair Cut Ever to Demand to See Anyone’s Birth Certificate, Much Less the President’s.” So, laugh away at 2012, because unlike any Presidential election, laughter is free.

Spotlight on a WXXI Business Partner

“Our resident surveys consistently show WXXI as their dominant choice for television and radio programming. ….we feel the WXXI mission is compatible with our own and your audience is our audience.” —Cilla Drinkwater, Director of Marketing, Seniorsfirst Communities & Services

Valley Manor, the first retirement community of its kind in the area, is a 501c3 not-for-profit independent senior living community founded in 1970 by the Presbyterian Residence Center Corporation. Located on East Avenue, it includes an eight-apartment Assisted Living Community, an Adult Social Day Program, and is affiliated with Kirkhaven, a culture change skilled nursing community. According to Cilla Drinkwater, Director of Marketing, Seniorsfirst Communities and Services, Valley Manor’s location, high-rise convenience, custom apartment homes, and collaboration with arts and cultural programming organizations contribute to what makes Valley Manor unique. “Distinguishing features of its ‘Street of Shops’ include a salon, library, deli and convenience store, art gallery, computer lab, chapel, auditorium, restaurant-style dining room, post office and bank, therapeutic pool and fitness center. Valley Manor has a 24-hour security staff, both underground and valet parking, and offers full customization options to apartment residents, along with a full calendar of arts and educational activities,” adds Drinkwater. When asked what was involved in the decision process of becoming a partner with WXXI, Drinkwater explained, “Our resident surveys consistently show WXXI as their dominant choice for television and radio programming. Many of our residents are members of WXXI. As a not-for-profit, we spend our marketing dollars very judiciously, and we feel the WXXI mission is compatible with our own and your audience is our audience. As a service provider, Valley Manor is sensitive to the deeper needs of society – respect, sense of purpose and meaningful living. We feel that partnering with WXXI ‘brands’ us as good stewards of these values.” On a personal note Drinkwater enjoys 30 minutes during her daily commute with both Morning Edition and All Things Considered on AM 1370. She’s also a PBS Masterpiece Classic junkie! For more information on upcoming events, including the Backstage Pass Holiday Concert in December, visit seniorsfirst.com/valleymanor/events.htm
