The Renovation of the Eastman Theatre Updated Special
Co-produced by WXXI and Eastman School of Music, this one-hour documentary captures the fascinating story of the Eastman Theatre and documents its recent restoration. First premiering in June 2010, this special presentation includes new footage highlighting the completion of the Wolk Atrium, and the installation of the Blue and Gold Chandelier, a light reflecting glass sculpture designed specifically for the space by worldrenowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. Narrated by Rochester native, actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman, the film includes historic photographs, film, and video – including live performances from the Eastman School of Music and the RPO among others. Production funding for Restoring a Masterpiece is provided by The Pike Company, PAETEC, Louise Epstein, and Keith and Betsy Wilson. Restoring a Masterpiece: The Renovation of the Eastman Theatre airs on Monday, December 13 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials The Promised Land: Nalini Nadkarni airs Sunday, December 12 at 10 p.m. Nalini Nadkarni has discovered a whole ecosystem 30 to 200 feet up in the air. The so-called “queen of forest canopy research” has spent decades exploring the world of animals and plants that live in the canopy. This pioneering researcher shows host Majora Carter the wonders of Washington state’s Olympic rain forest. The Promised Land: John Francis airs Sunday, December 19 at 10 p.m. Host Majora Carter takes us along as she spends a whole day walking with John Francis in his hometown, Cape May, New Jersey, a beach community at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. We get to know this man who has raised awareness and changed minds globally— a man who has dedicated his life to saving the planet one step at a time Soundprint: A Little Before Tis Day/Mummers at the Door airs Friday, December 24 at 12 p.m. There is a centuries old caroling tradition that was thought to be lost, but discovered to still exist in a tiny village in Newfoundland. In A Little Before Tis Day, producer Chris Brookes tracks down
the village carolers and follows them on their rounds as they sing their medieval melodies. Mummers at the Door looks at the ancient solstice custom in Mummering. In North America today it is a popular part of Christmas now only in Newfoundland and Pennsylvania. The Promised Land: Winona LaDuke airs Sunday, December 26 at 10 p.m. Outspoken, engaging, and unflaggingly dedicated to matters of ecological sustainability, Winona LaDuke introduces host Majora to the pine forests, lakes, and windswept plains of the White Earth Reservation; and she talks about harnessing wind power, nutrition and diabetes, preserving heritage crops, and a mandate to protect the land inherited from her ancestors. A Season’s Griot airs Friday, December 31 at 12 p.m. Hosted for the last 17 years by acclaimed storyteller Madafo Lloyd Wilson, this annual one-hour special captures the tales and traditions of African-American and African peoples.
