Super Drama Sunday

It is a truth universally acknowledged that most people watch football on Super Bowl Sunday, but WXXI will offer an alternative on February 6th with a marathon of the acclaimed Masterpiece adaptations of three of Jane Austen’s classic novels. Whether you’re in possession of a good fortune or not, you’ll have the opportunity to support WXXI and enjoy some terrific ‘thank you’ gifts. WXXI’s Super Drama Sunday begins with Emma, at 12:30 p.m., where rich, independent and kind spirited Emma Woodhouse has no interest in marriage herself, but is inspired by matchmaking for those around her. Immediately following at 4:45 p.m. is Persuasion. On the brink of financial ruin, the Elliot family is forced to vacate their home. The task of organizing their effects falls to levelheaded Anne Elliot (pictured), destined for spinsterhood at age 27. The day concludes at 6:30 p.m. with Sense and Sensibility, a romantic odyssey full of seduction and abandonment.

Get ready to match wits with smart animals, smart materials, and smart machines, when WXXI-TV/HD presents a mind-blowing three hours of science in a specially themed primetime programming event, NOVA’s The Smartest Night on Television, airing Wednesday, February 9 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. At 8 p.m. NOVA scienceNOW takes a 360-degree look at what it means to be “smart”, in How Smart Are Animals? Immediately following at 9 p.m. New York Times technology reporter David Pogue hosts Making Stuff: Smarter, spotlighting the latest developments in “smart materials”. The evening culminates at 10 p.m. with a NOVA special presentation: Smartest Machine on Earth: Can a Computer Win on Jeopardy!? The program chronicles NOVA’s unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to IBM researchers as they develop the technology for “Watson” (pictured), the state-of-theart computing system, named after company founder Thomas J. Watson.

EVENING

WXXI is proud to be the presenting station for On a Personal Note, a film that takes viewers behind the scenes of the Fourth New York Piano Competition (2008). The film presents an up close look at the talented young pianists (ages 14-18) who participate in an unusual five-day no eliminations piano contest that seeks to minimize the often unproductive competitiveness of traditional piano competitions. On A Personal Note, premieres Sunday, February 13 at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD, and on public television stations across the country. On A Personal Note also addresses some of the larger issues facing the contemporary world of classical music: How can young pianists make a real contribution to such an old and established art form? What drives a young musician to endure daily hours of rigorous training and practice in search of personal expression and identity? How can one interpret a new work that has no performance history?

Maya Angelou’s Black History Month Special Maya Angelou defines Black History as it is embraced in our popular culture. The roots of comedy, along with the common adage, that ‘Blacks laughed to keep from crying’ is explored. Comedian Chris Rock defines the comedy of our times, and Angelou gives us the historical perspective from the 30s and 40s. Angelou also explores African American films by African American directors with a focus on the work of Lee Daniels, the success of “Precious” and how future works of this young director will change dialogue in American culture.

Then it’s time for poetry and the blending of old school and new school when Maya Angelou takes to the stage of the Urban League’s 100th Anniversary Celebration with rapper Common. “Maya Angelou’s Black History Month Special” airs Sunday, February 13 at 10 p.m. on AM 1370/FM-HD91.5-2

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials Who Was This Man? A State of the Re:Union Special airs Sunday, February 6 at 10 p.m. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s hallowed “I Have a Dream Speech” is an iconic moment in the history of civil rights. But this historic moment would probably have never happened if it weren’t for a man standing in King’s shadow, Bayard Rustin. Rustin’s most transformative act, one that certainly changed the course of American history, was to counsel MLK on the use of non-violent resistance. Rustin also helped to engineer the March on Washington and frame the Montgomery bus boycott. With such lofty achievements, why isn’t Rustin considered an icon of both Civil Rights and humanity? Why is Rustin not synonymous with Civil Rights? How could a person who changed the course of American history not be a household name? Was he purposely kept out of the history books? On State of the Re:Union, host Al Letson normally sets out to take listeners to a specific place, but for this special, the program takes the audience to a specific place in time that shaped the way we live now.

Say It Loud: Great Speeches on Civil Rights and African American Identity, an American Radioworks presentation, airs Sunday, February 20 10 p.m. This program traces the last 50 years of black history through stirring, historically important speeches by African Americans from across the political spectrum. The documentary illuminates tidal changes in African American political power and questions of black identity through the speeches of deeply influential black Americans. State of Siege: Mississippi Whites and Civil Rights Movement, an American Radioworks presentation, airs Sunday, February 27 at 10 p.m. Mississippi occupies a distinct and dramatic place in the history of America’s civil rights movement. Drawing on newly discovered archival audio and groundbreaking research on the civil rights era, State of Siege brings to light the extraordinary tactics whites in Mississippi used to battle integration and the lasting impact of that battle in American politics today.
